Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact noticed that when traveling at very low speeds, the abs would activate, resulting in little or no traction, similar to nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock). the manufacturer informed the contact that his vehicle was not included in the previous recall and offered no further assistance. an independent mechanic performed a diagnostic test; however, he was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was 49,000 and the failure mileage was 48,296.
Red brake dash light turned on. inspected vehicle and found brake lines rusted through and leaking fluid. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while applying the brakes the anti-lock brake system activates. this causes the vehicle not to stop when braking. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer and the dealer stated that the issue is with the anti-lock brakes and only happens in the north east or salt belt states. the dealer stated the front wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. the contact had the front wheel speed sensor replaced under a recall three years ago. the contact stated this is a major safety issue that could cause a crash. the failure mileage was 21,538. the consumer believed the problem was not performed correctly, the first time. updated 01/20/11*jb updated 01/28/11 *bf the consumer stated when the abs activated, he was almost at a complete stop. updated 02/04/11
I have a 2002 chevy silverado, that's is experiencing braking failures at low speed , like coming to a complete stop at a intersection. i have almost slid into several intersections and do no longer trust my brakes to stop when i need them. this problem is the same as reported under a existing recall # 05v37900. the problem is that my vehicle is not listed due to it's location, which is north carolina. this recall needs to be expanded to cover addition states. *tr
The brake lines were heavily corroded and starting to leak fluid. they needed to be replaced from the master cylinder back to all four wheels. this was confirmed by dealer inspection. this premature corrosion is a serious safety problem. this is a personal use 2002 pick up truck with only 66,300 miles. *tr
Unwanted abs activation and extended stopping distances during low-speed braking. *tr
Sudden total brake failure (all 4 wheels) due to rusted under body brake lines. service center is replacing all old lines from master cylinder to abs module and onto wheel cylinders. samples of old rusted lines are being retained. *tr
Brake lines to rear wheels failed with mild break application . this was due to rusty break lines . there were no brakes at the application of the pedal . this is not a isolated case , dealers have seen many cases of this problem. today as i had my truck at the dealer another chevy truck came in with the same problem . *tr
2002 chevy silverado brake line burst during normal operating condition. resulted in truck going through intersection with red light. mechanic attributed to rust on brake lines. *tr

Rear brake line over drivers side wheel rusted thru chevrolet 1500 2002 4 wheel drive 4 door ls. *tr
Have a 2002 silverado with 46,000 miles and in june 2010 experienced a major brake failure when the brake lines near the frame rail brake/abs controller rusted away. when trying to stop the brake pedal went to floor, was near home and drove the rest of the way. the next day the brake warning light was on, the fluid had leaked out and i discovered the problem - the rusted lines. a $1000.00 of brake work to correct the brake lines, that is replace them and new front brakes because the calipers had also rusted so badly they couldn't bleed the brakes. this is not acceptable for a modern vehicle to have safety parts rust so badly at such low mileage. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving approximately between 3-4 mph coming to a complete stop. when engaging the brake pedal, the anti-brake system appeared to be in activation because of the pulsation; however the brakes would not respond causing the vehicle to roll seven feet and crashing into the proceeding vehicle. there was no injury. a police report was not filed of the incident. the contact sustained damages to the front bumper and bumper covering. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed that the failure was contributed to the anti-lock brake system. the technician cleaned the front wheel speed sensor mounting surface. the contact stated the vehicle had been repaired in 2005, under nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock). the failure mileage was 106,500.
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving at approximately 10 mph and attempting to brake, the abs light would not illuminate and the abs would not engage. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 82,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that when pulling from the driveway and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the vehicle continued moving and crashed into a fence. there were no injuries. no police report was filed. the vehicle suffered damages to the front end and bumper. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the brakes needed to be replaced; the repair was performed at that time. when leaving the dealership, the failure occurred again and the vehicle was taken to another mechanic who stated that the wheel sensor needed to be replaced; the repair was performed at that time. the vehicle continued having problems and would not stop when the brake pedal was depressed. the mechanic was working on the vehicle at the time of the complaint but still could not find the problem. the vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 43,000.
While attempting to stop for a red light, the brake pedal went to the floor and i went through the light. after getting the truck stopped with the emergency brake, i found brake fluid leaking from under the truck from corroded brake lines. i made temporary repairs to the leaking lines and returned to my home. i checked online about this problem and found it seems to be a common problem. i also found from forums gm knows of this problem and simply says to live with it. so far i haven't done anything to fix the problem as gm doesn't offer any replacement parts. *tr
Rupture of hydraulic brake lines including anti lock portion, total loss of braking. *tr
After driving 400 miles to laurel springs ,nc from baltimore ,md through mountain roads and arriving at our destination my wife parked our truck , we got out to go in and open up the house. i then went back to the truck and got in to move it closer to the house to unpack our belongings for a weeks vacation. i started the vehicle and placed it in drive only to have the brakes go all the way to the floor . i then took a flashlight and had my son pump the brake pedal and brake fluid was gushing from the brakeline. i took a file and scraped what looks like little balls of rust and behind the ten or so balls found a hole the size of ball point pen tip.i then spent two days replacing the brake line form parts at the not so close auto zone. i find it hard to believe that 8 year old brake lines would rust that badly , i've had 20 year old vehicle s that didn't have brake lines rust out. i'm just lucky that the line broke after getting to my destination and not on the mountain roads we were traveling. i have the old brake line but left it at the house in nc. *tr
March 27, 2010 rear driver side brake line burst on 2002 chevy silverado while on highway. when brought in for repair 2 new calipers were needed due to extensive corrosion. repairs came to $617. *tr
As my wife pulled into her parking space at work, the brake pedal went to the floor. she was able to stop, got out and brake fluid was leaking from under the truck around the driver door area. since she works at a gmc truck dealership she had one of the techs look at it and found a hole in one brake line and others corroded. they replaced 4 brake lines and one rear brake line due to corrosion. the truck is a 2002 chevrolet silverado. *tr
This is a follow up complaint to one i called in to the nhtsa to report this problem. i too had a brake line rupture on my 2002 chevy pickup and my brakes fail as a result of corroded brake lines. this truck had already been recalled due to the wheel speed sensor failing at low speed which they gm) also attributed to corrosion. and just last month they failed because of the line corroding and rupturing. i attempted to come to a stop at an intersection when i applied the brakes and the brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard. i eventually stopped just short of the intersection and was able to drive the truck to a service station. i got out of the truck and saw the brake fluid leaking out of the ruptured brake line beneath the driver's side door. i took the truck in and was informed the brake lines were rotted out and would have to be replaced. $1800 dollars later i got my truck back. let's see how long they last this time.. *tr
I was pulling inot a parking space at dunkin donuts and when i applied the brake to stop it made a noise as if the anti-lock system was going to kick on but immediately stopped and my brake pedal froze stuck at the top of depression leaving me with no brake at all. i hit the cement stop bumper pole, luckily it was there, and caused damage to the front end of my truck.(bumper & framework). good thing this occured here within a parking area and not out on the road at an intersection which i just went through. this was the first time this has happened but it makes me very weary of the braking system. i disconnected the fuse to the abs system so this will not occur again until it is investigated further. *tr
I have a 2002 silverado. the anti-lock brake system activates at very low speeds as described in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000. i live in illinois but did not receive a recall notice from gm or my dealer. i called chevrolet and they maintain there is no recall on my truck. this is a very dangerous issue. *tr
I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado z-71 pickup truck. i have 105,000 miles on it. when i'm at a low speed my anti-lock brakes activate for no reason and the truck wont stop. i have nearly been in several accidents. i have replaced the rotors and brakes and cleaned and regreased the abs sensors and nothing has changed. im, forced to take my vehicle to the dealership for repairs. as it turns out, this is a common problem on chevy pickup trucks. this is a serious safety matter and needs to be looked into. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving at 5 mph, the contact applied the brakes and the abs system suddenly activated causing the brakes not to engage. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaced the front passenger side wheel sensor. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the repair for recall 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) had previously been performed. the failure mileage was approximately 140,000. the current mileage was approximately 146,000.
abs operation goes into anti-lock at low speeds making the truck hard to stop . sensors and pick ups cleaned 12/1/04 . *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact started the vehicle and as he depressed the brakes, they went all the way into the floorboard and all of the brake fuel leaked from the vehicle. there were no warning lights illuminated and the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection and repairs. the contact stated the front brake line was previously repaired because the line had rotted on the underside along the frame rail, where it was not detected. the contact believed the dealer installed used, defective parts for the previous repair. the contact stated he would repair the vehicle himself. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 45,000.
Hi, i have a 2002 chevy silverado i bought brand new. today i hit the brakes pulling out of my driveway and the brake hit the floor. the line blew out. all of my lines are rusted badly. if you look on the net there are hundreds of posts related to this. why is this not a recall? this could have been horrible as i was on my way to haul out my 5,000 pound boat! gm needs to address this or at least get word out they used cheap lines and people can easily be killed! jim stacy *tr
I am the original owner of a 1500 series, 2002 silverado, residing in south florida. while exiting the ramp off the highway, at 50 mph, with a 7,600 pound car trailer in tow, i depressed the brake pedal, and it went to the floor! only with the use of the manual override of my electric trailer brakes was i able to stop, avoiding a near miss collision, and a serious, perhaps fatal accident. it was determined one of the brake lines leaked and failed as a "rust and corrosion". the vehicle had 52,300 at the time of the incident, and in florida since purchasing new. with the help of a friend, a temporary repair was made using a compression fitting to allow us to continue our 90 mile trip home. the truck was taken to the dealership who confirmed "rust and corrosion" was the cause, however there were no recalls, or warranty, and i would be required to pay the cost of $738.00 to replace all the lines. at that time i had little choice but to authorize them to proceed. however after completion of the work and my inspection, the lines were installed using interconnecting fittings, at various locations, and not continuous lines as was originally supplied by the factory, nor was placement. i now question the safety of the repair. the dealership advised the work they performed was the method authorized by gm, and continuous lines were not available from the factory. this is probably because gm does not offer them, as the brake lines should have lasted the life of the truck. i have concluded that the material used for the brake lines were of very poor quality. i have contacted gm and continue to await a response from their engineering. the dealership has further advised there was nothing further they could do, and the gm area representative confirmed that with them. i question if it takes a number of deaths as a result of poor quality brake lines before gm takes some action. in searching the internet, i have found many reports relating to the same problem. so, what will gm do? *tr
vehicle was involved in recall for front abs wheel speed sensors, recall was allegedly performed 6/21/05. while pulling into a parking spot applied brakes while turning in, abs engaged at a low speed, approx. 2 mph, and vehicle would not stop, collided with two concrete posts that were protecting the gas meter for the building damaging the front bumper and impact strip. i do not believe that the recall was ever performed. vehicle is a 2002 chevrolet silverado extended cab 4x4. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that the abs light in the vehicle illuminated and when that occurred the brakes would not stop the vehicle. he also noticed that the failure occurred at a low speed range, 5 to 20 mph; he further noted that there was a grinding noise. when he lightly touched the brake pedal during the failure, the vehicle would then stop but the abs light would stay on longer. he took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that there was corrosion on the braking system. the manufacturer has not been notified at the time the complaint was filed. the vehicle had not been repaired to-date. the current mileage was 70,260. the failure mileage was approximately 67,000. updated 3/16/10 *cn updated 05/10/10*jb
I saw the newspaper article on the possible brake failure on 99-03 pickup trucks. this happened to my son in my 2002 chevy silverado in my driveway which is about 100 feet long. he pushed on the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. luckily he was going slow. there was brake fluid in the driveway. i was outside at the time and got in and pumped the brakes. none. i had to have it towed to a repair shop and they replace a defective brake line. your article has made me fearful for my family. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving approximately 5 mph when the brakes failed to engage. the brake pedal was engaged repeatedly before in order to stop the vehicle. the failure occurred whenever traveling between 5 to 10 mph. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 21,500. the current mileage was 23,200. updated 06/03/10*bf updated 06/07/10*jb
Corroded brake lines caused the failure of both front and rear brakes at the same time. inoperable rear emergency brakes provided no emergency stopping ability. replaced brake lines. emergency brake not repaired. i understand that trucks with manual transmissions were recalled for emergency brake defect correction, but trucks with automatic transmissions were not eventhough they have the same emergency brake system. my vehicle has an automatic transmission. not certain when emergency brakes became inoperable, but my guess is around 2004 or 2005, with 60k to70k miles. brake line rupture was in 2009 at 156k miles. *tr
Abs brakes engage at slow speeds (under 10mph) while coming to a stop. while applying the brake the abs activates and the vehicle lunges forward a few feet until the normal braking activates. this exact complaint was addressed by chevrolet on safety recall bulletin 05058c and this repair was completed on this vehicle back in 2005. the design of the hub allows the reluctor wheel to rust which in turn doesn't allow the speed sensor to achieve a correct reading and has created the exact same issue as addressed in the original safety recall. *tr
The brakes on my 2002 chevy silverado do not work properly the brake pads only seem to rub on the front of the rotors so we replaced the rotors & brake pads & the problem is still there the stopping time is not where it should be. *tr
Was notified of the brakes, abs inadvertent activation recall. took the vehicle in and no issues were found relating to the recall. several months later the exact symptom described by the recall was happening. took the vehicle in again and was told that i would have to pay for the repair even though the recall was clearly the cause. the abs activates under 8 mph and when crawling very slowly in heavy traffic. pedal goes to the floor. i removed the abs fuse to avoid low speed crash. has not been repaired to date. *tr
I currently own a 2002 silverado 1500 z71 with 22,300 miles. today while driving it i noticed that the brakes were a little softer then normal and not stopping the truck very well. shortly after that while coming to a stop i pressed the brakes harder and they went to the floor and i had very little to no stopping. i had to use the e-brake to stop the truck and get it off the road. it seems that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs box rusted out. this truck is not a daily driver and rarely will see a road when there is salt on it. with this few of miles i don't think this should happen due to the fact that i was lucky and could have been in a bad accident. i have also found out that this has happened on a lot of other silverado/sierras. currently the lines are still broken and have yet to be replaced but will need to be. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving less than 10 mph, the anti-lock brakes activated unexpectedly. at highway speeds, the brake pedal would extend all the way to the floor or freeze to the point where it could not be depressed at all. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they found a recall/safety improvement act that listed the same failures as the contact's year, make, and model vehicle. however, his vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist with the repairs; therefore, the contact would have to pay over $500 to have the vehicle repaired. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure and current mileages were less than 66,800.
Loss of brakes due to rotted brake lines on a 2002 chevy silverado. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that the antilock brakes activated while driving 5 mph or less. nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) was referenced. the failure could cause increased stopping distances during low speed braking applications, which could result in a crash. the recall applies to 21 other states except for kentucky. the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer yet for diagnostic testing. the failure mileage was 101,000.
Brake failure 2002 chevy silverado 44,000 miles. low speed parking $2,500 damage results in no brakes. *tr
Brake failure, hydraulic steel brake lines rusted and burst when brakes were applied resulting in total loss of brakes. all steel brake lines had to be replaced because they were all severely rusted costing $1400.00. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving less than 10 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle was slow to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact experienced extreme difficulty coming to a complete stop. in addition, the stopping distance was increased. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the front wheel speed sensor cables had excessive rust. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 62,012 and current mileage was 62,200.
I am writing regarding the very poor brake life and performance failure on my 2002 chevrolet pickup, 1500 series purchased new from a local dealer. at 19,500 miles the brakes were diagnosed (on 1-15-09) by the dealer as needing complete overhaul, a cost of $571.00. the problem was noticeable at 12,000 miles by excessive pedal travel, the same with the emergency brake. no action was taken or notice of brake wear indicated by the dealer when notified. by 17,000 miles the brakes were noisy and when informed the dealer said my rear rotors were rusty from low use and i should consider a replacement. unable to believe my brakes were worn out ( i'm 65 years old and have never had a vehicles' brakes wear out any where near this mileage) i decided to drive it more often to remove the rust. during this time my teenage daughter, with me as a passenger, nearly hit a semi unexpectedly blocking our lane, because the brakes worked very poorly. this was in the fall of 08. in november and december 08, i wrote to the dealer requesting cost sharing for brake repair. no response.. then, in late december i wrote to gm , customer affairs, in detroit,mi. requesting cost sharing due to premature wearout. they requested the cost estimate on 1-15-09 and then refused or denied any assistance based on "low use". i am well aware of a broad problem with early brake wear on 2001 to 2004 (admitted by service reps at the dealer) light duty gm trucks, mostly due to rusty rotors, especially on the rears. this is further evidenced by the dealer estimate which showed expensive replacement "ceramic" pads, which were not original equipment. the dealer also admitted that at one time they tried to add a "kit" to shield the rear rotors from salt spray. these are all evidence of defective parts, something that should be covered by warranty regardless of the vehicles age or frequency of use. or covered by a recall. your website shows thousands of complaints on this item. please add mine. *tr
Stopping the vehicle, the anti-lock brakes would kick in at around 3 to 5 miles per hour and the vehicle would not stop, would roll a few more feet. almost hit a woman and child in cross walk, had to stand up on brakes. this not stopping happened 5 or 6 times, this was the came reaction as in 2005 recall, called gm. gm chevrolet customer assistance center said, go and get this problem confirmed by a gm dealership, did oct. 9, '08 and they said corrosion build in same area, but because right front hub was replaced with a non gm part (after market part) they have no responsibility. this hub came with the sensor attached. in 2005 my 2002 chevrolet silverado was issued a recall for severe corrosion area between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. they found the left side sensor was missing an o-ring, they installed under the recall. the vehicle is doing the same thing and a local dealership service department confirmed this same corrosion problem. called chevrolet customer assistance center oct 10, 08. gm chevrolet customer assistance center called me monday oct, 20, '08 and said that once the recall was fixed, (how did they fix corrosion) the same problem is now my problem. when i dropped off the vehicle the brakes were bad, when i picked it up at the end of the day they were 10 time worse, really unsafe to drive. they did not charge me a dime, said that they would work it out with local rep. i will get the vehicle fixed, but how does this correct the problem? *tr
When traveling at a low rate of speed and attempting to brake the abs brake system engages and does not allow me to stop when necessary. this happens every time i try to stop at a low rate of speed. this was corrected once by recall number 05v379000, however the problem has not been permanently fixed and we are in danger every time we drive the vehicle. *tr
