This complaint relates to nhtsa action number ea11001 regarding corroded brake lines on chevy trucks. i was coming up to a red light, some cars ahead of me, going about 30 mph. i applied the brakes. initial pressure on the pedal felt normal, then the pedal resistance dropped to zero. by pushing the pedal all the way to the floor i was able to stop the vehicle. i pulled in to a gas station. brake fluid was pouring out of a location along the brake line running to the back of the vehicle. location about where the cab and bed meet. i was able to drive slowly to a nearby chevy dealer for repairs. total repair bill was $2200. *tr

I have owned this truck from new. it is used for limited hauling duties around town and has very low mileage. last summer i took it to the chevrolet dealer for pa state inspection. the mechanic drove the car into the service bay and upon doing so, the brake fluid dumped out suddenly from beneath the truck chassis. this was 10 min after i drove the truck to the dealers using a local expressway. the truck was then put up on the lift and i was shown the fact that the brake lines were severely corroded to the point that the brake fluid was dumped onto the floor. i paid $2332 for brake repairs. as a graduate materials engineer i inquired as to the material used for the brake lines and was told they were carbon steel. it offends me greatly that this truck had this severe failure with less than 10k miles, and that gm apparently has been aware of the problem and hidden it for many years. their focus on saving a buck could have cost lives as a result. the dealer was not helpful in making me aware of any mitigation program by gm. and i am stuck with a large bill for their negligence. i am appalled and an unhappy customer!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the brakes were applied and the anti lock brake system engaged independently. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred on an intermittent basis. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was repaired previously under nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000 and the current mileage was 93,000. *tr

I went to stop at street light and the brake went to the floor no brakes at all. later found brakes lines rusted threw. all transmission lines also rust threw. price to have fixed over $2000.00 *tr

While driving, the vehicle operator experienced complete brake failure--vehicle was towed to nearest chevrolet dealer and is now awaiting "new " brake line installation. i have been told that the entire braking system has corroded and will need to be replaced. *jb

During braking from 35mph to make a right turn my brake pedal went to the floor. the truck did not slow down enough to make the turn, i drove down a block to the next intersection and used my parking brake to complete my stop. i parked the truck and immediately noticed fluid from the brake line leaking out on ground in the area just below where the drivers feet are. the line is a rigid steel line in a group with 3 others that run from the abs control unit forward and all of these steel lines are severely corroded particularly in the area outside of the frame where the line has ruptured. my truck is a chevrolet 1500 z71 with 126,000 miles and has been well maintained since i have owned it. i feel that this issue is extremely dangerous and have found that there are many others with rusted and ruptured brakes on their chevy trucks. other people were not as fortunate as me because my son and i made it home and we were unharmed. i feel that it is imperative everyone who owns a chevy truck of similar model year be alerted and warned of this potentially deadly and dangerous brake problem. *tr

Severe brake fluid leak on main steel line(s) under drivers side about 1/2 way toward the rear wheels. unable to drive vehicle. pedal went to floor as i was trying to put the vehicle in gear. pumped brakes with no increase in pedal. looked under vehicle and brake fluid on cement. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph and applied the brakes, but the brake pedal released abruptly to the floorboard. the vehicle continued to accelerate. the contact shifted into first gear in order for the vehicle to stop. the vehicle was then towed to the residence for diagnosis. the contact detected the brake lines completely rusted. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified and they stated there was not a recall related to the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 108,700.

Electronic brake control module ebcm (brake traction control module) internally shorted causing pump to run all the time, even when vehicle ignition was turned off. danger of abs failure and fire without unit replacement. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that when driving between 5-20 mph and depressing the brakes, there was an increase in stopping time. the abs light would then illuminate on the instrumental panel. the vehicle was repaired for the failure under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) in september 2005. the vehicle was later taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that since the recall had already been performed on the vehicle, they were not able to assist. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 90,400.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while the brakes were depressed, the brake warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed hat the brake line had ruptured. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was 110,00.

The parking brake on my truck will not hold as it should, thus causing vehicle to roll down driveway. there is a recall for silverado's with manual transmissions,( defect investigation # ea04011 gm recall #05042 nhtsa campaign id# 05v161000) mine is a automatic, but the auto and manual use the same parking brake set-up. i have done some reading on-line chevrolet truck forums and there are allot of silverado/suv gm owners with automatics that have this same type of brake system that are having the same issue, not holding due to premature wear out of parking brake shoe lining. there is also a gm tech serv bull for this matter as well, but not a recall for the vehicles with auto transmissions, what are the owners of automatics less important. the tsb has the dealers replace the spring retainer clip just as the recall does. i think the tsb needs to take a hard look at the parking brake issues on the trucks/suvs with automatic transmissions as well. *tr

On 11/09/11 i brought my truck in for state inspection. two minutes after giving the keys to the mechanic, he came back and said that the truck had no brakes. the hydraulic brake line ruptured as he attempted to bring the truck into the garage to inspect. the hydraulic brake lines are all completely rusted to the point that they all need replaced. this is a serious safety issue. not only should this be recalled and repaired at gm's expense,, more importantly the material that future hydraulic brake lines are made of, need to be regulated as to be a rust free material. *tr

I have been having several brake issues with my truck within the last year. my latest problem has been the abs engaging at a near stop around 5 mph. this happens several times within a short trip. after researching this over the internet it appears to be a problem with quite a few chevy truck owners. i work for a major auto parts retailer and have asked several mechanics of a fix or solution. there seems to be quite a few diagnosis mentioned. i would just like to fix my truck properly and not have to worry about getting into an accident with my wife and kids in the truck. *tr

Help please. anti lock brakes lock up or go to floor at low speed. recall 05v379000 covers vehicles with this defect registered in cold weather states extending to maryland and d.c. i live in virginia, but have driven in covered areas, including maryland, pennsylvania, west virginia and d.c. my vehicle has a safety defect that has required a recall. it should not be excluded simply because it is registered on the other side of a state line. *tr

My silverado pickup has had two problems that caused low-speed inappropriate activation of the abs, lengthening stopping distances. once, about five years ago, and again this year. on both occasions the front wheel bearing hubs had to be replaced to remedy the problem. the bearings are sealed and not serviceable, and when they wear the air gap under the anti-lock sensor starts varying, causing erroneous signals to the abs. the first symptom is dangerous application of the abs at low speed. (i nearly hit the building i was approaching while parking.) *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving approximately 10 mph downhill when force was applied repeatedly to the brake however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. upon engaging the emergency brake the vehicle came to a stop. the contact inspected the vehicle and detected brake fluid leakage. in addition, there was rust corrosion within the brake lines. the contact planned to notify the manufacturer regarding the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. the vin was unavailable.

after leaving my house i attempted to stop at the end of my street only to find that my brakes had failed! i turned around at the next street to return home. i had about 20% brake function so i drove at about 5 miles per hour. on my return home a little dog ran out in front of my truck, i was unable to stop and consequently ran over her. she died immediately, i felt horrible. the emergency brake was applied but too late! the truck has a stainless steel exhaust system but rusty brake lines (poor engineering or cost planning?). incidentally i was on my way to i-75 where i would of been traveling at 70 miles per hour. if the failure had occurred then, who knows what would of happened? i also have a 1997 blazer that lost its brakes due to brake line rust and fluid leakage. this happened at 55 miles per hour, but i was left with approximately 50% braking power. the difference in braking capacity after failure was dramatic. also there was no warning light illuminated during and after the event. it only came on after the truck was stopped and restarted. *tr *kb

2002 silverado z71 stopped for fuel, started truck, put my foot on the brake to put in gear, pedal goes almost to the floor, slowly drove home. i had all the brake lines replaced with stainless steel lines from classic tube, i hope you mandate that gm pay for all repairs with submitted bills and $ 2000.00 in compensation for the aggravation. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving 8 mph, she applied the brakes but the vehicle did not stop until crashing in her front yard. the crash was minor and the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that some of the braking sensors would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 78,300. the vin was not available.

Brake lines and fuel lines must be replaced due to excessive rusting. blew a brake line and had no brakes at all. additionally, the frame has rusted through and had to be welded. looking at repair costs between $1500 - $3000 depending upon how this goes. *tr

After securing 10 pallets in the bed of the truck and beginning the drive home from the local lumber yard, i depressed the breaks to stop at the first light. the brake pedal went to the floor, so i downshifted and began to depress the emergency brake to stop. at this point i had my wife pick up the children so they would not be in the vehicle with me. i proceeded home (less that 1.5 miles) at a reduced speed of approximately 10 miles an hour. depressing the brake provided marginal stopping capability. it was sufficient stopping power for a vehicle traveling about 10 miles per hour at 100 feet. under the vehicle after the antilock braking box, the one line was spraying brake fluid when the pedal was depressed. the rust was so severe, when going to cut the line, the line actually crushed inwards with no apparent good metal. in splicing the line i was unable to find the proper clearance to reconnect the line to the antilock braking box, so my mechanic will be working this shortly. the other lines look equally bad so i will have those replaced as well. i have never seen rust this bad on my vehicles even older than this one. pictures and or pieces of the brake line can be supplied upon request. *tr

I am having problems with my 2002 chevy silverado anti lock brakes. brakes activate at speeds lower than 5 miles an hour, and extends my braking distance, which has almost caused several accidents. this is the same problem that is occurring under recall bulletin 05068b, but my vehicles vin number is not listed in the recall. can the recall bulletin be revised to include my vin number, due to my vehicle is experiencing the same problems? i have spoke with chvey corporate customer service and the dealership, about covering the cost of the repairs or at least partial cost, both refuse to cover anything because the vin # is not listed in the recall bulletin. *tr

Brake line failure due to excessive rust and corrosion. luckily i was on a side street diving slow and approaching a stop sign. when i went to stop the pedal went to the floor. i had to use the e-brake to stop and brake fluid was pouring out the bottom of the truck from a very rusted and broken brake line. why won't gm do anything about this???????? *tr *kb

I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado. the metal brake line which runs along the frame, at the point where it connects to a flexible hose that services the rear brakes has rusted through and as a consequence all of the brake fluid has leaked out of the master cylinder reservoir. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the contact stated the anti lock braking system would engage while braking at low speeds. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, where the contact was advised to disconnect the anti lock braking module. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000. the vin was unavailable.

Nhtsa investigation number: ea11001 - brake line failure, steel brake line under left side of cab ruptured due to rust and brake fluid leaked out of brake system. upon further inspection, found all 4 steel brake lines are rusted very badly under left side of cab, additional brake line rust found on all steel brake lines, under hood in engine compartment, along frame, under cab, and under truck bed. one of these steel brake lines ruptured resulting in complete brake system failure due to loss of brake fluid while driving! very dangerous. dealership repaired one failed steel brake line, but would not replace all rusted brake lines. this failure occurred while traveling 45 mph and approaching a red light at busy intersection. brake peddle went to floor, no brakes, down shift automatic transmission to 2nd gear and used emergency brake. i had to swerve and changed lanes three times to avoid accident. there was no warning to this failure. also vehicle is meticulously maintained. please help. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet 1500. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes, but the pedal depressed all the way to the floor. the contact inspected the vehicle and realized that the brake lines underneath the drivers side door broke as a result of corrosion. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 62,000....updated 12/03/12 *bf the dealer replaced the brake lines and one caliper. updated 01/05/12

I was driving home and as i pulled into the driveway, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor as i braked. i looked under the truck and it was leaking brake fluid around the driver side frame rail over the gas tank. the brake line seems to have rusted through and burst under light braking pressure.

Has occurred on multiple occasions. while driving- depressed brake pedal, which went to floorboard and insufficiently provided braking to stop vehicle. no warning provided. was able to pull to side of road before striking vehicle in front of me. mechanic indicated it is corroded break lines. had experienced similar problem(poor braking approx. 4000 miles ago due to corroded sensor. have not yet repaired vehicle. unusable. *tt

i attempted to stop at a stop light. when i depressed the brake pedal it went to the floor and i realized that i had no brakes. i was able to slow down enough to make it through the light and into a parking lot. after a quick inspection i found that the steel brake line going to the rear brakes rusted through, and was spewing brake fluid. this truck is a 2002 model with only 88k miles and is well maintained. i don't think the brake lines should rust through and fail this soon. this is a major safety problem. i was lucky. i was driving slow, was not on a busy street and didn't have an accident. it could have caused a terrible accident! it has not been repaired yet. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph he applied the brakes and the pedal depressed to the floor. the vehicle would not stop until the emergency brake was engaged. the contact examined the vehicle and noticed the brake lines on the driver's side fractured due to corrosion. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 45,000.

I recieved a card to fill out in regard to my chevy silverado 2002 truck.i reported no brake failure at that time on june 3rd 2011 the brake line gave way and nearly caused an accident.i had to take the ditch to avoid it and 2 of my children were in the truck. *tt

Brake pedal suddenly went to the floor as i attempted to back out of a parking space. no prior problems with the brakes. upon exiting the vehicle i noticed a large puddle of brake fluid forming under the vehicle below the driver's door. called aaa and had the vehicle towed to a local shop. mechanic pointed out that all brake lines forward of the abs pump were rusted out resulting in the failure of one of the lines. he also pointed out that the front calipers were rusted to the point where the bleed ports were unserviceable, requiring replacement of the calipers as well as the brake lines. from my research this appears to be a case of inferior materials used in the construction of the 6 million affected vehicles. luckily i wasn't at speed when this failure occurred. these vehicles need to recalled, inspected, and repaired at gm's expense before there are any further injuries.

I got off work, pulled up to get onto main road brakes felt spongy, did stop, got onto main road traveled 1/2 mile about 35 mph, slowed truck by letting off gas to make right turn, tried to use brakes to slow more, brakes went to the floor. i managed to get slow enough to make turn safely. i pretty much traveled 5-10 mph another 50yds to get into lowes parking lot. i tried to brake again, no brakes. i put truck into neutral and coasted to stop. i got out of the truck smelled brake fluid. brake fluid was everywhere around my driver rear wheel. i called a tow truck to get my truck home thinking my caliper or hose failed. after taking off my wheel, i found that the steel brake line was ruptured. called a mechanic to see if he could take a look at it, he said he could maybe late friday, he just did a 2004 silverado with the same problem. i called a tow truck again to get truck to his garage. he calls me late friday evening and said all the brakes lines have to be replaced because of heavy corrosion and maybe the calipers depending if they fail. he quoted me a price at $900. my co-worker had his brake lines replaced not to long ago and his is a newer model. *tr

Was driving to the store in my 2002 chevy silverado and out of nowhere the brake pedal went to the floor. luckily pulled into a parking lot and saw brake fluid pouring out from underneath driver side of vehicle.after looking under the truck to see where it was coming from found all brake lines in that area extremely rusted and deteriorated .checked the reservoir for the brake fluid and it was almost empty . this could of been a situation where a severe accident could of occurred. this happened on 5/21/11 have yet to take the vehicle in for repairs. just to mention my daughters age 10 and 14 are in this vehicle often with me and i have never seen brake lines on a vehicle this bad considering the vehicle is less than 10 yrs old. *tr

1. normal driving, all vehicle preventiative maintenance 2. while driving, the brake lines burst causing lose of braking power. upon inspection, the brake lines were completely rusted through. 3. all brakes lines replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. while the contact was driving approximately 5 mph on dry road surfaces, the anti-lock system activated and the vehicle would not slow down when the brakes were engaged. suddenly, the gear was shifted into reverse causing the vehicle to crash into a cement barrier. the contact resumed driving without experiencing the abs failure. there was no personal injury. a police report was not filed. the front bumper sustained minor damage. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
