Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Brake line under drivers seat failed due to rust. driving at about 25 mph slowed down behind another car when brake pedal went to the floor. the front brakes had failed, stopped with rear brakes only. missed car in front by inches. truck was brought to local service station and i was told all brake lines going to the abs unit were badly rusted and needed to be replaced. *tr

I was backing my truck up to park it in my yard, and the brake pedal went to the floor. when took a look at to what caused this to happen, i found a hole in my left rear brake line under a wire harness that was routed over the brake line. the line was badly rusted. the routing was incorrect to keep from wearing a hole in the line. i think this was done at the factory causes i have never messed with the wire harness, it has always been there. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving approximately 50 mph pressure was applied to the brake pedal and the pedal depressed to the floor. the vehicle coasted to a stop and was driven to an authorized dealer where the contact was told that all of the brake lines were corroded. the contact was also told to replace all of the brake lines. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 110,000.

Tl*the contact owns 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, he applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floorboard. he mentioned that the only way he was able to stop the vehicle was by applying the parking brake. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that there multiple brake line failure due to corrosion. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was offered no assistance. the failure and current mileages were 60,400.

My wife complained the brakes felt like they had air in the lines and stopping was difficult. when i went to bleed them i found that the front steel line was completely rotted and had a pinhole sized failure. i had a mechanic replace the lines and he was surprised at the level of corrosion all over the underside of this vehicle. the outer body is in perfect condition giving a false impression of being in good shape.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving under 10 mph, the abs unit activated before the vehicle was brought to a complete stop. the contact had to engage the brakes harder to stop the vehicle. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that he would have to pay for the repair expenses. the contact was informed by the manufacturer that recall 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti lock) had previously been performed. the current and failure mileages were approximately 75,000.

While driving my silverado down the freeway at 65mph the abs light just came on without warning or touching the brakes. light stays on, and abs does not operate at all now, brakes feel soft and spongy and unsafe. i know there was a recall on these trucks, i called the dealership and they said yes there was but my vin. number wasn't effected in the recall. i believe it should be as i've read a lot of complaints on this issue with these trucks. i believe gm has a problem and it needs addressed.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving approximately 30 mph approaching a red light, the brakes suddenly failed; the brake pedal extended to the floorboard. the contact used the emergency brakes to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the brake line was rusted and brake fluid had leaked out. the mechanic replaced a part of the brake line and informed the contact the repair was a temporary fix. the failure mileage was approximately 92,000 and the current mileage was 92,400. updated 01/26/11*lj updated 04/04/11 *jb

100% brake failure, fluid leaking from brake line under truck, loss of brake pedal at stop, not able to avoid stopped vehicle at traffic light, have truck towed from scene. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 30 mph, the contact attempted to slow the vehicle down and the brake pedal extended to the floorboard and would not engage. the contact steered into the grass to bring the vehicle to a stop. the contact inspected and discovered that all the brake lines were corroded. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were approximately 140,000.

I have a 2000 chevy silverado that has had a recall on the abs system. the system gets corrosion and then at low speeds wont allow you to stop when planned. the abs activates on dry pavement. i have almost hit several vehicles cause of this. there has been a recall on this and the truck was fixed once, but now it is doing it again and chevrolet wont take care of it a second time. they need to step up and take care of their issues. *tr

Rear left side brakeline failure due to rust on 2000 chevy silverado 1500, on inspection rust noticed on all brake lines. many similar reports from consumers on same complaint. newyork based vehicle, truck always washed undercarriage to remove salt from roadway in winter months. all lines need replacement...dangerous condition!!!!! please have your vehicle inspected for your safety. no damage , crashed into curb in parking lot. i strongly believe these vehicles should all be removed from roads and fixed at gm expense. nhtsa has responsibility to enforce safety recalls but has yet taken due to influence of our "nationalized car manufacturing company". due to the government ownership of this company, any failure to act responsibly on this matter should be seen as "wanton neglect" by this agency for the safety of the public at large & not just these vehicle owners. i fully intend to inform my local rep. to the failure of this agency to take seriously the consequences of continuing to allow 1.3 million trucks with known serious safety issues to remain operating on our roadways. *tr

While doing a normal stop, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. i checked and the brake line is corroded and leaking near the driver side rear tire. *tr

Rear steel brake line failure due to corrosion in a none enclosed area. brake line rotted through in an area exposed to fresh air. further inspection shows all steel brake lines are failing due to corrosion. brake pedal was lost on the highway while towing a 29 foot rv travel trailer. no incident to report. *tr

Brake line burst and resulted in low speed crash. property and vehicle damage occurred due to corroded brake lines. *tr

The first time i experienced catastrophic brake failure i was traveling at a slow rate of speed in my condominium parking lot. the brake pedal went to the floor and i had no brakes. the repair was done at my independent garage where i havea been dealing since 1983. i was told that the brake lines had "rotted out." they replaced 10 feet of brake line. the second time i experience catastrophic brake failure was yesterday, september 4 while approaching a traffic light about 6:30 pm. fortunately the traffic was light on the early sunday evening of the labor day holiday weekend. by downshifting the automatic transmission to 2nd and then 1st gear i was able to make the right-hand turn at the intersection onto the berm of the road. earlier that day i had come down the blue mountain at sterret's gap in pennsylvania. had the failure occurred then i wouldn't be able to report it. within the past two weeks i have towed my boat on the pa turnpike with the truck. god knows how many people would have died had the failure occurred then. fortunately no pedestrian was crossing the street when the brake failure occurred - they would be dead! there are repeated reports on the internet of catastrophic brake failures on these trucks due to brake line corrosion/rot. it is time you folks act. my next steps are: contact my representative, senators, and an attorney. *tr

While driving home on the interstate i encountered a traffic jam and had to apply my brakes. when i did, the brake pedal went to the floor and i had to use my e brake to avoid a collision. both front and rear brakes were lost and upon investigation i found most of my brake lines under the car were corroded. i have since replaced the front lines with a non corrosive material and am in the process of replacing the rear line. i did save one of the front brake lines. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was driving 5 mph and approaching a stop. as the contact depressed the brakes, the brake line ruptured and the vehicle would not stop. the emergency brake was utilized in order to stop the vehicle. the contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence where he discovered five brake lines expelling from the abs module. all five lines from the abs module were severely corroded and rusted. the manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for inspection. after the vehicle was inspected, the dealer advised the contact that all brake lines would need to be replaced at the contact's expense. the contact repaired the vehicle himself. the failure mileage was 82,797.

I own a 2000 chevy silverado p/u i have approx. 58000 miles on it on 9-18-2010 my wife was returning home and lost the brakes on the truck she was two streets away from home so she slowly proceeded to drive it home. upon further inspection i noticed all of the brake lines severely rusted with one leaking inspecting further it was come to a conclusion all the brake lines would have to be replaced as if you touched one you might compromise the others. after calling the dealer and hearing it would cost me apprx 3000 dollars to have it done i have taken three days off of work to do this the best that i can it cant be any worse than the lines that are on there now...... *tr

Corroded brake lines burst during braking, loss braking front and rear lines. complete brake failure towing trailer. no crash or injuries. replacing all brake lines. *tr

For about 4 months we have been having a problem with this truck stopping at low speeds. it seems like the antilock brake kicks in, but the pavement is dry and the truck just keeps going, the brake pedal goes down and you pray that you will stop before you hit something or someone! after this happened to us 3 or 4 times we learned to be very cautious on the road and slowed way down before coming to a stop so we would be able to stop, just in case this were to occur. (it did not always happen, only when it felt like it) however, were always wondered what would happen if we had to stop all of a sudden for an emergency. lucky that never happened. the last time my wife came in the driveway and came within inches of hitting our garage door, that was it! the truck has been parked for the past 2 months. we are afraid to drive it. about 1 1/2 weeks ago my wife typed in "2000 silverado brake problems" on the computer and we were amazed to pull up 59 pages of complaints from consumers with similar problems of 1999 to 2006 silverado and gmc sierra which are being investigated by your office already. that is when we put 2 and 2 together with the complaints of the brakelines rupturing upon quick heavy braking, as was in many complaints also, that may have been the reason that our son had the accident with this truck in sept. of 2010. he was driving in very heavy traffic on the interstate in a construction zone, crawling along, when someone had pulled in front of him and he had to slam on his brake - his brakes failed because of the line bursting and he hit an expensive traffic info sign and did $4000 damage to our truck. he chose to go for the sign instead of into another vehicle and probably killing someone. then we called our chevy. dealer, $110 to diagnose, then gm and they refuse to help us until we take it in and pay for a diagnosis. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that the brake lines were severely rusted through the rear and front metal brake lines. the manufacturer was contacted and advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer to have the brakes inspected. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 87,758. updated 11/16/10 * updated 11/23/10*jb

Purchased 2000 silverado new in fall of 2000. on 8/30/10 driving south on merritt pky (ct) bringing daughter to college applied brakes, vehicle started to slow down and suddenly foot went to floor and absolutely no more brakes. hit car in front which hit two other vehicles. put on emergency brake and steered into guardrail to stop the moving truck. unbelievably frightening experience, four vehicles involved including ours. truck was totaled. we always loved the vehicle and felt secure when driving it now just the thought of being in any vehicle and not stopping is a very real fear. state police officer did not cite us said it was mechanical failure "blew a line". there very well could have been serious injuries/fatalities caused by this mechanical failure, we were all fortunate only property damage. photos were taken and silverado was totaled. insurance rates will go sky high now with surcharge. can we sue gm? we have police report. *tr

Brake line rupture due to corrosion. vehicle brake pedal went right to the floor. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was entering a residential garage at 2 mph with the brakes depressed when the brake pedal fell much further into the floorboard than usual. the vehicle did not stop and the contact had to engage the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. the contact discovered that the brake line was corroded and rusted. in addition, brake fluid was leaking from a hole in the brake line. the dealer advised that the entire brake line would need replacing. the manufacturer advised the vehicle was not under recall and would not provide any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 103,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact was braking from 45 mph yet the brakes would not engage. the contact was traveling uphill and was able to coast to a stop. the vehicle was then towed to his residence where he discovered that the brake lines were rusted prematurely. the dealer was contacted and they advised that they were aware of the failure. the dealer was able to order the part needed to make repairs however, the contact stated he would repair the vehicle himself once the part became available. the failure and current mileage was 104,000. updated 12/22/10 *bf the consumer stated the brake line ruptured due to rust. updated 12/30/10

Pressed brake to put into gear. brake went to the floor. no pressure. hear fluid coming out from under driver side door undercarriage. pressed foot brake again. same thing. fluid coming out. no pressure. checked. brake fluid leak from rusted brake lines. very bad rust. very dangerous. brake lines should not rust like that. one of the most important part in a car is the brakes. this is a severe safety hazard. i work in the quality department for a major us defense contractor and this would not pass standards. major failure. good thing my daughter and me were still parked. i live on a very steep hill and that would have been very bad if i didn't notice problem. *tr

I applied the brakes to stop my truck when approaching a stop sign and my brake pedal went to the floor. i coasted into the intersection and stopped. luckily there was no traffic. the vehicle was eventually towed to the dealer and the supply line to the rear brakes was replaced. it had failed due to rust. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated while braking from 40 mph and approaching a traffic stop, the brake pedal fell into the floor board. the metal brake line had fractured and caused all brake fluid to leak from the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who advised that the entire brake line would need to be replaced due to corrosion and rust. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. updated 01/28/11*lj updated 04/20/11

The brake line running from abs unit to rear of truck ruptured in a parking lot in july of 2010. several months later, in december of 2010, both brake lines running from master cylinder to abs unit ruptured when backing out of my driveway. i noticed the front brake lines going from abs unit to each front caliper were corroded in early march 2012 and replaced before they could rupture. it's a good thing i replaced them because barely moving the lines resulted in ruptures in both lines before they could be unthreaded to be replaced. thankfully none of the ruptures resulted in an accident. *tr

2000 chevrolet silverado 2 wheel drive extended cab with 85000 miles crawling through rush hour traffic, someone cut me off. i stepped on the brakes and the pedal went slowly to the floor. i tried "pumping the pedal" to no effect. i tried the emergency brake. it did not hold the car. i pulled off the road. slowed down by down shifting. could not find the problem. pumped the brakes a few times. i saw a puddle under the drivers side rear. i had rupture in the metal brake line. i crawled to a service station who replaced the brake line. i have not found out what is wrong with the emergency brake. *tr

2000 chevy silverado - unwanted abs activation. attempted to stop on a declining driveway - abs came on - est. going slow between +/- 4-10 mph. vehicle did not stop and crashed into back of parked car causing significant damage (~$2k) to car. truck continues to have abs stopping failure at slow speeds. was part of recall in 2006; 'corrected' by dealer. concern 'correction' did not fix issue. truck driven daily (no choice) ... concerned with safety. *tr

Driving along and stopped at red traffic signal behind another vehicle, when we started moving other vehicle decided to turn, i hit my brake pedal and it went to the floor. i pulled over and checked to see the problem and found the rear brake line had rusted and ruptured. i replaced the rear brake line and fluid and have the old parts if required to see. *tr

Brake lines corroded causing the fluid to leak and loss of most braking capacity. there was no accident. all the brake lines were replaced. the work was performed by a chevrolet dealer and the old parts are not available. *tr

I was traveling approx 25 mph in the rainy, wet evening of june 15, 2010 at 10:30 pm traveling east on cr 87 and turning to get up on the overpass bridge of exit 234. i started to hydroplane when i hit the gravel, rock part of the road and skidded into the right side of the bridge hitting my passenger tire and bouncing me out and spinning around. i tried to compensate by applying brakes gently and my brakes locked up, my seat belt did not hold me back as i hit the steering wheel with my head and chest. i then was spun head on into the left side of the bridge and smashed the entire front end of my truck. i was so scared and all i could think is when is my airbag going to go off, it never did. there is over $5000.00 damage to my vehicle and it is only worth $8000.00. i went to the er and suffered mild concussion, neck strain and bruised chest. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact when braking from various speeds, the anti-lock braking system independently would engage and the brake pedal and front of the vehicle would vibrate excessively. the contact was able to locate a recall for the failure and inquired with the manufacturer about nhtsa recall campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the manufacturer advised his vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

I was driving my 2000 chevrolet silverado pickup truck at 40 mph and attempted to apply my brakes to make a left hand turn into the halfmoon fire department driveway. when i applied the brakes they suddenly dropped to the floor and the truck did not slow down. it could have resulted in a serious accident but i was lucky. i inspected the vehicle, after nursing it to a safe location, to find a severely rusty main brake line which had burst just in front of the gas tank on the underside of the truck along the frame. we plan on replacing the brake line ourselves and have not yet determined cost as this happened last night at 6:30 pm. *tr

Depressed brake pedal to shift out of park, pedal went to floor. no brakes.aaa towed to dealer. brake lines rusted out. lucky this was not an emergency stop!! gm no help. $1451.00 later truck repaired. driving gm products since 1972 have never had the corrison problems that i have had with this truck.rotors brakes brake lines. *jb

I was towing a small dump trailer on my farm using my 2000 chevy silverado 1500 when the brake pedal went to the floor. lost all use of brakes. crawled under the truck and discovered that brake lines are all completely rusty and had rusted through causing loss of fluid and brake pressure. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that the speed sensor for the abs was defective; when he applied the brakes, they would pulsate and make a clicking sound. the failure only occurred when he would attempt to completely stop. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times and repaired but the failure continued. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that they would contact the dealer and contact him back. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were approximately 46,600.

2000 chevrolet silverado 1500 4wd pickup - corroded brake line. front passenger brake hose to caliper end completely rotted (i.e rust), line leaked and lost pedal firmness. i immediately took notice and repaired my self with new line. all other brake line exhibit signs of severe corrosion along with fuel lines and transmission lines. i would not expect this severe corrosion on a 1970 chevy pickup, let alone a 2000. new steel brake lines are not available; only the hoses leading to calipers. hard lines will need to be fabricated which is labor intensive and expensive. very dangerous. *tr

Discovered a low pedal condition while driving on 695 , inspected and found rusted out brake lines and fittings have caused braking malfunctions in my 2000 silverado the vehicle has 50,000 miles on it . this is the second occurrence! the dealer repaired first problem @400.00 second problem is still pending. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact started the ignition, and when pressure was applied to the brake his foot immediately traveled to the floor without a response. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where they stated that the brake line failed due to rust corrosion. the vehicle was repaired. in addition, the rear shock support beam fractured, and the contact was unsuccessful in locating the part for the repair. the failure mileage was 118,000.

The brake lines on my 2000 chevy silverado rusted out and had to be replaced. the gas line was also rusted out. *tr

i tried to stop, because of a sudden stopped car in front. i experienced a total brake failure, left the road, drove into a field. no damage done. investigation revealed all my brakes lines rusted through, corroded beyond repair. worst corrosion i ever saw on any brake lines. sudden failure could have caused deadly crash.

Tl*the contact owns 2000 chevrolet 1500. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph and abruptly engaged the brakes as a result of the brake lines ruptured. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the failure was contributed to rust and deterioration. the failure mileage was 132,678. the current mileage was 134,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. the vehicle was repaired in 2005 according to recall 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock); however, in march 2010, the contact noticed that the brake pedal extended to the floorboard when he attempted to slow the vehicle down or stop. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the front sensors needed to be replaced. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance since the recall repair had already been performed. the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was 90,207. the failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 extended cab. i noticed a brake leak under the driver side door. on further investigation i found that all of the brake likes to and from the abs module were badly corroded with at least 1 leaking. upon further investigation there is a great deal of corrosion in other parts in the same area. this truck has 145,000 miles. this is all highway miles. found that nhtsa has opened an investigation with gm on corrosion in brake lines in 1999 thru 2003 trucks. want to register with nhtsa on this same issue. was going to pay to get it fixed because its too dangerous to keep driving it, now going to sit on the truck to await outcome of nhtsa investigation. *tr

At a chevy dealer for an oil change and check. was told truck was ready. in route, they called and told me there was a leak in brake line and that brake lines were rusted and brittle. i was traveling and had no choice but to repair brake lines. they replaced brake lines and connectors from the abs unit back to rear wheels @ incredible cost. when i got home, i went to trusted dealer and was told that the rest of the brake lines were also rusted and that i would have to replace them too in the near future. the brake line puncture happened when it was at the dealer. there was no leak before it went in for service. they refused to tell me how the leak occurred except to say that the lines were rusty. i just read in paper about a nhtsa investigation into brake failure on older model chevy trucks. i live in new york. the truck is well taken care of, regularly serviced, and had just above 80,00 miles. the dealer told me i was lucky the brake lines did not rupture when i was driving. they told me the brake line rupture was because of corrosion, and the dealer back home told me that all the other brake lines needed to be replaced because of corrosion. i've already been taken to the cleaners. to replace all the brake lines will put my expenditures far over what the truck is worth. to add insult to injury, my rear differential had to be replaced on my trip. i was given no reason for why it went (another $2600). the last thing that happened was a rust-related leak-out of the power steering fluid. never another chevy. horrible truck, horrible company. incidentally, long-bed chevy trucks apparently always have vibration that they never fix, even if complained about, apparently because they can't. an overall defective truck, perhaps more appropriately a defective manufacturer. believe me, it does no good to try to work with the company to deal with any kind of problem, including warranty problems. they were always so unresponsive, you just give up. *tr

At slow speeds of approximately 6 to 8 mph the vehicle will not stop or is very difficult to stop and at slow speeds the abs activates for no reason. there is a recall # 05068c that my vin is included however vehicles located in nc are not included. my vehicle has been driven in different states including ny, pa and nj. i feel this vehicle is unsafe and i am concerned about damage or injury to myself or others. gm and the dealer sir walter chevrolet in raleigh, nc refuse to fix this problem under recall. *tr
