Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Driving 40mph check engine light came on then reduced engine power flashed on message board several seconds later traction control light came on and service traction control came on message board. my speed was reduced to 20mph in traffic! luckily i was able to pull over safely without causing any accident (fyi i had my daughter in thr car with me). i will be taking the car to a chevy shop in the morning where im sure i will have to pay high cost out of pocket even though this has been an issue for chevy owners (online search) and there has been many complaints with no recall. this is a serious issue and i feel it is putting many lives in danger and should have been a recall a long time ago. im just lucky i wasn't on the highway yet because this could have turned fatal. *tr

I was turning in my driveway off of the main road and the car seemed to cut off. the first thing that i noticed was that i had to struggle to turn the wheel as i was trying to avoid a cement post on the side of my driveway. i got it in the driveway while basically coasting, and i noticed some lights on in the dash. i put the vehicle in park and proceeded to start it. *tr

So im drving down the expressway i57 at about 85mph and the car beeps 3 times displaying service stabilatrack/ service traction and check engine seconds later the car completely cut off. while in traffic. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that the throttle sensor shut down warning message appeared. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the throttle position sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired twice, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. as a result, the contact crashed into a pole and the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained a concussion, sprained neck, and whiplash which required medical attention. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number: 14v355000 (electrical system), however the parts are not available to perform the repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

This is the third time this has happened to me and luckily not while traveling on a highway. i am getting a traction control loss with reduced power light on that actually powers down the engine. i have been able to shut the car off and clear the light and it works o.k. but that is not a permanent fix. this problem with these vehicles has been well documented hundreds of times on forums all over the internet and why has gm done nothing about this? someone is going to die or seriously become injured due to this defect, i hope to god it is not me!!! this is really a problem if you are traveling at a high rate and speed and the engine decides to power down. i want this addressed asap before we are reading and hearing about another fatality at the hands of gm!!!! *tr

I was driving in the rain on my way to work on a highway. with out warning my steering locks up, my battery light and engine lights turn on. along with this my cars temp goes through the roof. this is happening at 65 mph its 3 am i can no longer see or control my vehicle. thanks to my skilled driving i was able to pull the car over. i can't figure out what is wrong with my car i've had a professional look at it he doesn't know what do over than replace parts and do trial and error. im lucky to be alive every time i drive in the rain but its not me that i'm worried about. i don't want anybody to get hurt or killed due to my steering locking up. *tr

Without warning, an engine power reduced notice appears, and the vehicle slows down from 65 mph to under 20 mph. *tr

Service traction control/engine power reduced lights came on dash. car lost all power and when stomping the gas pedal speed would resume, very hesitant from a dead stop. car was jerking, shut off traction control and car jerked then too. gm needs to fix this before there are deaths. also i have no unlocking doors. they have to all be manually unlocked. battery was replaced in car and on key fab. gas pedal sensor and throttle body sensor are the triggered codes, gm needs to find the real solution as these don't seem to fix problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the engine power reduced warning light illuminated and the vehicle decelerated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 200,000 and the current mileage was 210,000.

I have had the ignition switch repaired under the recall thinking this might help the problem. i will be driving down the road when the steering will lock up and the car slows and cuts off. i have had several near miss accidents with other cars and am literally afraid to drive the car anymore. i have taken the car to several other dealers and they claim they are unable to determine what is wrong or how to fix it. it is only a mater of time before i have an accident and injure myself or others . *tr

While driving to work on 29 may 2014 i hit a small pothole. the pothole is 10" across, 3-4" deep, and i hit it head on. this caused my car to shut off, which i didn't realize until i tried to accelerate. i then realized i had no power steering or breaks and had to pull off to the side of the road to restart the car. luckily there were no cars behind me, so other than having to pull off the road on a curve i was lucky. i called both my local gm dealer (ressler of bozeman, mt) and gm customer support to tell them about the issue. the local dealer told me there was no issue with the car, no recalls, and nothing to worry about. the technician told me to "avoid hitting potholes". given the state of the roads that may be hard to do. the gm support told me there was no recall at the moment but there might be one down the road and to watch the news. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. after five minutes, the contact restarted the vehicle and it operated normally. the contact immediately drove to the dealer who stated that the accelerator pedal needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 41,550.

This is the second incident we have had with our 2008 chevrolet impala where this problem has occurred. the most recent incident was on wednesday may 21st, around 730 pm. my wife was driving on a road with a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour, she said she was going about 48 when the traction control light came on, and the messaging system indicated "reduced engine power." when this happens the vehicle slows rather rapidly, and then it is impossible to accelerate beyond about 30 miles per hour or so. due to the rapid decline in speed and the fact that this occurs without warning, i believe this should be an immediately acted upon problem. i contacted gm only to be told that i have to take it to get it looked at by one of their local dealerships, and pay for that diagnostic. in my online research i have discovered many, probably in the hundreds, who've experienced this identical issue. some of which have take their car to gm who has concluded according to post of experiences on edmunds that they were unable to determine the source of the problem or repair it. this is a problem that require immediate attention. i can't imagine how differently this could have gone should my wife have been going 75 mph on interstate 80. we live along i-80 and travel it frequently. however as a result of this problem we are essentially unable to trust our vehicle beyond about 50 miles per hour. *tr

Our 2008 impala ls, with 100,000 miles, is having the same problem i am seeing at this web site and all across the internet. last month, may, 2014, and this month, june, 2014, there was a sudden reduced power alert on the dashboard and the check engine light came on. the speed immediately dropped to no more than 35 mph. before i could get it to advance to have them check to see if any codes had been dropped by the computer, the check engine light went off. there was no reduced power message either, and the speed returned to normal. i was told to try fuel injector cleaner, which i did. all went well for almost a month, when the same thing happened again this month. this time i was able to get it to advance with the check engine light still on. the computer had dropped 2 codes, both related to the accelerator pedal position sensor. advance did not have the part, nor did autozone. fortunately, napa did, for $90, including tax. our local chevy dealership wanted $50 more. since it is a very easy part to replace even for an amateur like me, i replaced it. there are only 2 10 mm bolts to remove and an electrical connection to unplug. so it was pretty simple, and so far, this has done the trick, but it's only been 24 hours. this apparently is a job that the dealerships want to charge $300 to $400 to do. as i said, this is a widespread problem for gm, and they have not and will not, so far, do a recall. they should. i'm only out $90 so far, but other people are out much more. if i have the dreaded, follow-up problem with the throttle body, i will be out a whole lot more. i sent an e-mail to chevrolet after the first instance, and did get a response back. i told him i didn't want to take any further action unless this happens again. i will be contacting him again now about this latest incident. *tr

This vehicle has been recalled due to air bags, and in a year no one has been able to get the repairs done to the vehicle. but furthermore the car has several other mechanical issues that i am showing as a trend with impalas being that my sister and cousin have one also in different years, the car makes a ticking noise when the air or heat is turned on the passenger side delivers opposite temp as the driver so if air is on the passenger will deliver heat and vice versa. if the car goes over a speed bump the engine reduces power and service stabilitrak appears across the lighting as well as the car dropping out of gear if i go over any bump. this is very dangerous especially being that my children and i were in this car and it decided to do this on the interstate at night in 70 mph traffic. after doing research on the vehicle i am showing that i am not the only person with all of these problems listed, and it bothers me that none of these issues have been recalled just as the air bags were even though i think the recall, is just to save face because no one is actually doing the work to get them fixed. at first i thought these things were just mechanical problems with age of car but after research these are issues that are in cars made in this time frame and warrants a recall for the safety of consumers.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while he drove at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure was experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who reprogrammed the computer but the failure was not corrected. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 61,000.

Tl- contact owns a 2008 chevey impala lt. the failure occured april 2014. the contact was driving and you hit a pothole. the contact stated that they had to put on hazard lights on. the contact brakes failed after hitting the pothole, preventing her from stoping the vehicle. the contact stated the key ignition failed. the current millage is 109,000. the contact called the manufacture. there were no repairs made on the vehicle.

While driving message reduced engine power is displayed along with throttle disabled message, engine shuts off, making vehicle difficult to steer. left my wife stranded in middle of road. car restarts after approx. 15 min and displays orange engine light. took to webbs texaco in lakeland, fl and they say it has a bad ecm. previously shut off at 70 mph on interstate. *tr

Driving down the highway and the engine slows down , then the reduced speed light comes on. the engine power is very slow almost got rear ended. i have read on line that this has happened alot to this particular vehicle, why hasn't chevy recalled any yet . this should be a safety hazard. *tr

While accelerating the car lost the ability to continue accelerating all at once which caused a jerking motion of the car causing me(the driver) to be thrown forward hitting my head on the steering wheel. it all happened very fast and the reduced engine power and traction control message appeared on the dash board and is still on the dash board. as i said it all happened very fast but i was able to brace myself slightly which is the only reason i was not seriously injured. this issue which now after speaking to my car mechanic and me seeing many other people having the same issue after doing some research online is a death sentence to someone. someone is going to die from the car losing the ability to accelerate all at once along with a jerking motion that makes you want to have a foot on the gas and a foot on the brake to be able to stop should the car take off on it own. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly decelerated to approximately 5 mph. the contact indicated that the vehicle traction control and engine reduce power warning lights illuminated prior to the vehicle decelerating. the contact stated that after turning the engine off and restarting the vehicle operated as normal. vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 105,521. *tr

I purchased a chevy 08 impala in late january 2013 with less that 55k mile on it, now it's been about a year it's around 64k mile. today on my way to work, the traction control light and engine light are on and there are the message of traction control is on and also the engine power is reduced. i felt the speed of the car reduced, luckily i am on local street without many traffic. after about an hour i tried to tested it again and only the engine light is on, the speed of the car is normal. i am not familiar with car problems and also it's my first time to own a car. but i read a lot posts online [xxx] and found so many people experiencing the similar problems. the same problem would later happen in my situation. i am disappointed to learn that gm hasn't resolved this issue. i hope i could fix it soon. *tr parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My engine power reduced light keeps coming on and the power is significantly affected. i can set my cruise and then without warning the light comes on, cruise stops working and car slows down. this is a hazard in fast moving traffic. it appears that this is a very common problem among 2008 model impalas. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while exiting a parking lot, the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. the starter disabled, service throttle and engine power low warning messages displayed on the instrument panel after the failure. the vehicle was restarted after numerous attempts however, the failure progressed into an intermittent occurrence. the vehicle was taken to the dealer , who stated that the engine control module would need to be replaced. the manufacture was alerted about the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 128,000. updated 06/27/14*lj the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired. an occasional, split second stall or missing out can be detected. if it continues after the oil change and transmission fluid check the consumer will report it to the dealer. updated 07/2/2014 *js

Throttle disable light comes on and the engine shuts down, including steering. this has happened twice. the first time was january of 2014, speed was approximately 50 mph. we were able to steer the car into a neighborhood and after about 30-40 minutes, the engine started again. this happened again yesterday, in a much more dangerous situation. i was entering a highway with traffic travelling at and above posted speed of 70 mph. as i merged, the throttle disabled light flashed on and the engine immediately shut down. luckily i was able to steer the car onto the shoulder. i truly feel my life was in danger. the vehicle started after about 30 minutes of me sitting on the very busy shoulder of this highway. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle service traction control and engine power reduced lights illuminated. the vehicle was not taken for diagnosis or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 100,500.

I was driving about 35 mph the entire car system shut off , no warning lights came, i rolled into a dirt parking lot, and turned the key off, sat there for a little while then continue to work, had to take alternate route, didn't know when or if it would happen again. it did happen again later that afternoon, while autozone tech was checking my battery. it was frightening, thank god!! traffic was light.i live where a lot of big rigs come and go, i mostly drive freeways, but that day i had to change my route. *tr

The service traction control light comes on and the engine power reduced message appears. the entire car shuts down and you can not accelerate. i was on the freeway and could have been hit from behind. i immediately put on my hazard lights and pulled off to the side of the road. this was the first time, happened again this month(march). taking to chevy dealer for a diagnosis. *tr

In june 2012 i had this problem error message read: "engine power reduced " as i was driving 55 mph on highway mph fell below to 40 i had to get off highway. i had this problem fixed so i thought it cost me about 360 dollars. same exact recurring problem same error message today 12/09/13. this is ridiculous gm has to know this is not safe. dealership will not repair again at their own expense. too much money for me to continue paying over n over again. they need to recall this car it's outrageous! can someone please help us?! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated while driving various speeds, the traction control, stability track and engine reduce power warning lamp illuminated. after the warning lamps illuminated, the vehicle suddenly decelerated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 92,000. . ..updated 03-12-14 *bf the consumer stated the problem was intermittent

I have a 2008 chevrolet impala ltz. i have had several occasions now when my car has started flashing "service stabilitrak" "engine power reduced" "service airbags" and then all the corresponding lights come on. one of the times the vehicle flashed all of those warnings, the lights came on and the car died, while i was driving. it lost all power and it took everything i had to steer the vehicle off the road. i had my [xxx] year old with me that time and was scared i was not going to be able to get us to a safe spot to sit and wait for help. the most recent incident happened last evening on my way home from work. i was driving on the freeway going about 75mph, the warnings flashed and then my car lost power and felt as though it was not handling the road as well as it should. i live in mn and we are in the middle of winter now. i need my car to be safe and i rely on this car to get my son and i to where we need to go safely! this is the only vehicle i have and cannot afford for something to happen to it. i have been reading several forums about others that this is happening to and can't help but feel there has to be something more to the situation. i would feel horrible if something ever happened to my family or anyone else because of my faulty vehicle!! this needs to be figured out and taken care of. *tr *dl parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Vehicle was stopped at stoplight. driver reached down to pick up paper he dropped on the floor, and accidentally got finger caught in lanyard attached to key ring that had the ignition key in it. ignition switched turned to off, and engine quit. had to shift to neutral to restart engine. *tr

I drive the car and it says engine power reduced stabilatrak it slows down and it feels forced to drive so i pull to the side of the road wait about 10 to 15 minutes and it starts but then it got to the point were it wasn't even drivable with it stating engine power reduced stabilatrak so i called chevy in modesto ca asked if there was a recall they said no and i told them i seen a lot of complaints on line with the same problems i was going through they said you cant believe everything online miss i took the car into the a mechanic i know he diagnosed it as being a throttle sensor and pedal sensor charged me 587$ i thought the problem was solved a week later it did again engine power reduced but this time it started over heating to ive had nothing but problembs with this car ive also changed the tires numerous times the sensor for tires is always lighthing up and saying check left front tire or back tire i take it to the tire shop they say tires are fine but the back ones need to be changed i change the back tires it still says check back tires ive also had the suspension fixed a few times when itswindy i feel the car moving from side to side i also have had engine problems with the transmission was replaced nowit has has 2 blown head gaskets all in all the past 2 to 3 years i have payed 4 to 6,000 in repair and itsstill running like with it stating engine power reduced stabilatrak i need my vehicleto befixed of this problem. *tt

I was driving down the road and the power reduced, its says reduced power in engine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving approximate 80 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

Yesterday on my way home from work .. i exit off of 55 onto 1st avenue. got to odgen avenue and suddenly the car went into a slow motion . message appeared reduce engine and transaction control. i was not able to go pass 20 miles. i pulled over at a walgreens. shut off the car and started again. same message. i finally made it home ( 1-1/2 ), usually 20-25 minutes. i looked on line last night and saw numerous calls and complaints regarding the same issue. i called gmc this morning and of course no recalls for this problem.. this is a serious issue and i or someone else could have been hurt .. *tr

I had just started my 2008 chevrolet impala ltz and was leaving when the service stabilitrak warning came on and engine power was reduced warning came on. the vehicle lost power and began to jerk as it shifted gears. unfortunately, it occurred at a time when the local chevrolet dealer's service department was closed and on the weekend. i'm hoping to get this problem resolved on monday as this is my only mode of transportation and i'm 8 weeks from graduating from college!! it would suck if i have spend all this time and money in getting my education only to fail due to a vehicle breakdown that seems to be an issue with this very make and model. this could be a very dangerous situation for anyone having this problem with their impala. it shouldn't take a loss of life or injury, fire or crash to make the manufacturer place a recall on the faulty part that is causing this. *tr

This is the third time i had to fix this passlock thing on my impala and im getting so sick and tired of it *tr

Frequently, service traction control and engine power is reduced lights come on. when this happens, car is sluggish and will not accelerate. this is very dangerous because it happens unexpectedly and causes vehicle to decelerate quickly. typically the car will start normally after sitting for 15-30 minutes but check engine light remains on for some time. also, the message engine hot/ac off fires randomly. temperature gauge rests at zero. it will start working again either through manual reset by removing battery cables and reconnecting or randomly start working again on its own. there are numerous reports of both issues on the internet which indicate replacement of sensors/throttle are very expensive and do not fix the issues. *tr

I was just driving and the check engine light popped on. in the message box it said engine power reduced, and the traction control light also came on. i have no idea what's going on. i couldn't pick up speed, when i tried to it would jerk. i've never had any problems out of my car until now. *tr

A few months ago, while driving my vehicle the service stabilitrak warning came on and engine power was reduced causing a safety hazard on a busy road. following instructions from gm, my mechanic cleaned connections on the pedal relay. the same problem occurred this past saturday while driving on the highway, nearly causing a collision. i have been told the repairs to fix this issue will run close to $1,000. i have also read many forums on the internet indicating this is a consistent problem with impala's. it is my belief that this should be addressed with a safety recall. *tr

On june 22, 2012 as i was driving approximately 40 mph, the reduced engine power and traction control message popped up on the dash. i know my car slowed down a lot and then picked up speed again. i notice that each time i pressed on the petal to stop at a light or stop sign the car would jerk forward. i did not think too much of it until my husband then drove it and said the same thing happened to him and the car was driving really rough. i did some research and see that lots of chevy owners have been experiencing the same problem. please enforce a recall as this is not safe especially when you are driving on a freeway. *tr

As i was driving, all of a sudden the service traction control light came on and then engine power reduced light came on. this caused my car to slow down without warning which could have been a dangerous situation had i been on a busy highway which fortunately i wasn't. i read up on this and noticed that this is happening quite often and this should really be remedied before an unfortunate death or injury occurs from this. *tr

I was making a left hand turn. i slowed to turn. a car was coming but far away. the "reduced engine power" light came on and i had minimal power to complete the turn and was nearly struck in the side. i had the decreased power, only after completing my turn did i stop and notice the light had come on. my car has significantly decreased power and acceleration. it is intermittent. i had a very unsafe drive back home. i wish i would have had it towed because it was intermittent decrease of power. *tr

I was driving about 50 miles an hour and "service traction control" and "reduced engine power" lights came on. i slowed down to 40 and was trying to merge into traffic and the car downshifted really hard and died. right as it died another light came on, something about the throttle. i was on a 4 lane bridge during rush hour. had the car towed to the local chevy dealer. when they got it, it started right up, but the check engine light was on. they had the car for 3 days and could find nothing wrong with it. since then it has happened 5 more times. *tr

I own a 2008 chevy impala which has been having computer problems for 1 yr now. it reads out reduced engine power and the car wont go faster than 40 mph. ive had it fixed but then comes right back up, one mechanic says to clean the throttle and another says its sensors. this is becoming quite a problem and nobody can fix it permanently. it is a serious saftey issue due to the fact that i transport grandchildren around and the car looses power out of nowhere, then just shuts down in the middle of traffic. i cant keep paying all this money for it to just happen over and over with no results. when is this going to be on the recall list? i went online to find out there are alot of other people having the same exact issue. please help me? i cant afford to keep paying for this when its never actually been fixed. i have no problem paying to have my car fixed but i do when i have to pay over and over again and its still not fixed. *tr

Out of nowhere my door lock actuators for all three passenger doors are not working neither is my trunk opening and to make it worse im sitting in my job parking lot with the a/c on waiting for my break to be over and all of a sudden my car starts blowing air from the outside inside the car and i looked at my dash and my temp level was rising to in between 1/2 and 3/4 got out check coolant was fine and everything else checked fine but now everytime i sit in my car with the engine running and my a/c on it only stays on for about 20 mins, then the a/c cut off, starts blowing hot air, and the a/c nor the recirculation will engage it blinks. and to make it worse i smell fuel on my oil dipstick and my car is drinking fuel like water someone please help me. *tr
