Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2000 Chevrolet Impala

My battery was dead, so i put a battery charger on the battery, then went to start the car. i turned the key for about three revolutions and then the car exploded! i wasn't sure what happened because i was sitting inside the car and there was snow on the windshield. i got out and there was plastic parts all around the car, and there were flames coming from the motor! *tr

Driving along and security light came on and car died. waited some time after pulling over and car started sometimes car will not start right away because of security light this is random and very annoying as you do not know when the car is going to die. dealer wants to replace parts that are very expensive and i did this once before (out of warranty) and can't see doing it again if this is not a fix. *tr

Hit a pot hole on the highway. key fell out of the ignition, was able to retrieve the key off the floor and restart the car while driving. i think that my knee may have hit the key knocking it into the accessories position resulting in the key falling out of the ignition. i just left moran chevrolet in clinton township, mi to have the ignition key recall fix. i notice the key can still be removed in the accessories position. in my opinion all the fix did for gm recall 14350 was add more weight to my key by putting a larger, heavier head on my key. nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000. *tr

I purchased my brother-in-law's car in march. in august, while i was parked outside a friend's home, the car caught fire. no one was in the car and the keys were with me. after online investigation, we found that the car had a recall on it in 2009. my brother-in-law was never notified so neither were we. our first step was to contact gm who said there was nothing they planned on doing about this. we contacted the bbb who also contacted gm. gm then called us and again said there was nothing they could do. i feel there is plenty they can do. what about if my daughter and i had been in the car? how about if i had needed time off from work? i had to purchase another vehicle i was not prepared to purchase. we have the recall information, pictures from the fire, and a letter from gm if you are interested. i feel there must be some sort of compensation for this. the recall was because of their mess up in the factory and they failed to notify my brother-in-law. if gm had done what they were supposed to do, the fire would never have happened. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the anti-theft warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle failed to start. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was also included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system) and stated that the part was not available. the dealer did not provide a specific date for when the part would become available. the manufacturer was notified. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 22,835. updated 11/24/14*lj the consumer stated on two occasions, the vehicle would not start and the security light illuminated. after 15-20 minutes, the vehicle started. however, the vehicle would not shut off, but the lights would stay on. updated 01/27/15*jb

As i was pulling into traffic on a major highway....the car stalled and i was almost taken out by a semi......twice!!!!!!!! this car should be fixed by gm due to the passlock problem which was my original problem...the bcm was replaced and reprogrammed now this stalling and the air not working is not only unfair but unsafe. paid alot of money for my car to come back unsafe.....and i have talked to numerous owners of these cars....don't matter how much or who u pay to reprogram...still same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that there was a progressing failure in which the pressure was low on the reader and the vehicle hesitated numerous times before it stalled without warning. the contact had to make several attempts to get the vehicle to restart. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop mechanic who replaced the ignition switch and the oil pressure gauge, but the failure recurred. the vehicle continued to stall. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system), but the contact did not receive a notification. while at a stop light and upon acceleration, the rpms and pressure went low, the vehicle stalled, and an engine fire erupted. the contact was able to exit the vehicle. the fire department extinguished the flames. a fire report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and then towed to a salvage yard. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling) and was unable to receive the recall repair due to the failure happening before being notified of the recall. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000. parts distribution disconnect. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the security warning light along with the battery warning illuminated. the contact had to try several times in order to start the vehicle. the independent mechanic made several unknown repairs but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

While driving this car it would just stall or die as if someone had reached over and shut the car off and would not start for a few days. i have brought this car to two mechanics and neither were able to stop the problem but told me that different parts were the culprit, so 800 dollars later i have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, crank shaft position sensor, mass air flow sensor, replaced the battery, tested the alternator, tested the fuel injectors both hot and cold, tested the ignition module and still the car died leaving my child and i stranded on the side of the freeway in cold temperatures. i then called a gm dealership whom said another 120.00 just to look at it and said they couldn't find the problem . this is outrageous! *tr

Car will not start. it appears to be the passlock system. need to wait for system to reset and it will start. this seems to be a common problem with this car and many other gm vehicles. this should be a recall. *tr

2000 chevrolet impala. consumer received a recall notice for the vehicle and would like a refund for paying for the ignition lock cylinder.*ss the consumer stated the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic. *jb

No warning, no event leading up to the failure. 2000 chevy impala ls 3.8 stalls constantly. no check engine light comes on, so there is no way to know what is causing this. seems to be a common problem all over just look it up on the internet, don't know why this is not a recall, it is very dangerous. i was traveling 70 mph in the fast lane on a major highway and the car just stalled, also stalled at a red light, also stalled traveling at about 10 mph and at 30 mph (almost rear-ended on both occasions). chevy does not have an answer, chevy mechanic told me this has been a common problem with all gm cars for years. why is this not known to the public? they replaced the thermostat and it stalled about a mile down the road. now they will try replacing the crankshaft position sensor but will not guarantee that this will solve the problem. next they would try the mass air sensor. this is a known common problem that could be catastrophic if it happened at the wrong time. i know, i was almost killed on that major highway that day. *tr

Security light flashing, wont start or if it starts the radio and all cluster gauges wont work. *tr

2000 impala, car has died 2 times since purchased 2 weeks ago for no reason while driving. all electrical still works but starter will not engage, after 5-30 minutes of waiting it will start. chevy dealership says to change the ignition switch sometimes it helps. chevy knows about this problem but wont do anything it. also have the turn signal issue where they quit working until you turn on the flashers. fuel guage doesnt work. all of the recalls have been done to this car. why wont chevy fix the dangerous one about the car stalling at freeway speed and loosing the power steering and power brakes do to a stalled engine. 119000 miles on the car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that she was able to turn the key in the ignition but the engine would not start. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the technician advised that the ignition would need to be replaced. the vehicle was left with the dealer for repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000. the vin was not available.

My 2000 chevrolet impala has a problem a couple of times every month where it won't start up. i'll turn the key and nothing happens. so i'll just wait 15-30 minutes and it starts up fine. i've heard many other people having the same problem on all similar gm vehicles and was wondering why there has been no recall. *tr

I own a 2000 chevrolet impala. the dimmer switch on the steering column has failed/misfunctioned several times and is now locked in a permanent "hi beam" position. the lights have totally failed in the past. a website named "topix.com" has cited many instances of this type of light failure, resulting in several near misses as regards serious accidents. t is very apparent (and evident from the number of complaints filed with your office) that this is a very serious safety issue for which chevrolet is denying the existence and/or responsibility of any problem. they are simply ignoring this serious issue and trying to charge anywhere from $600 to $800 to fix this problem this problem apparently extends through many model years, from 2000 (or earlier)to 2007/2008. it is only a matter of time before someone driving at night is killed because of this defect. please advise what you have done regarding prior complaints, and what you intend to do to resolve this issue.. *tr

Multi function head light switch i own a 2000 chevrolet impala i was driving home from work the other night the lights went off i had to hold the lever to engage the high beams the lights came back on as long as i held on to the lever. i went to the auto parts store to discover that this was a common problem with chevrolets the replacement part was 330 dollars very expensive . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while stopped at a red light, the vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the ignition switch was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 36,473 and the current mileage was 42,000. updated 06/10/14 ma the consumer managed to jiggle the key, and she was able to re-start the vehicle. updated 07/01/14

Turn signals have started not working intermittently. not good if you have to merge into traffic on the highway. i have googled it and found that there are many complaints about this issue although not on this website. most resources say it is the hazard switch. *tr

Tl* the contact owned a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). the contact did not receive a recall notification and stated that the vehicle experienced the failure listed in the recall campaign. while driving 50 mph, the key position moved while it was in the ignition. the failure affected the engine, power steering, and the contact was unable to brake. as a result, the contact crashed head on into another vehicle. the driver's side and front passenger side air bags deployed. a police report was filed. the insurance company was notified and declared the vehicle destroyed. the driver sustained an extensive laceration when the driver's side air bag components projected from the steering wheel. the driver had continuous headaches and the injury required stitches. chevrolet of morristown (5320 west andrew johnson hwy, morristown, tn 37814, 423-408-2966) was notified and did not assist. the manufacturer suggested that the contact call a lawyer. the manufacturer was not initially notified of the crash, but was later contacted to report the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

My 2000 chevy impala decides not to start on some days. at first, it was very infrequent and now its happening more and more often. when i turn the key to start my car, the only thing that happens is the security light turns on. after about 10 minutes the my car suddently starts up again. from what i read online and on youtube, this problem is notorious with a lot of gm vehicles. not a lot of mechanics know what the problem is and i dont have the time or money to have it serviced multiple times. i do not understand why there has not been a recall for this obvious malfunction. i know that my next car will not be a gm.

My daughter with her permit was driving the vehicle and the turn signals stopped working in the middle of traffic. luckily she pulled over safely and i continued to drive home. the hazards worked fine and after some research, the hazard switch is the failure. this has been going on intermittently for a month and finally they would work only one time after car was turned on. my local dealer wanted $400 dollars for a $60 part and labor. thank god for used parts and an easy dash remove only seven bolts instructions online. do it yourself for cheap. my daughter at 16 did most of it as i told her with instructions. i do love chevy will remain loyal but they need to wake up and solve some issues. *tr

Tl*the contact owned a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact was driving approximately 65 mph and observed smoke coming from the vehicle. the vehicle was driven to the side of the road and the fire was extinguished. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the cause of the fire had not been determined. there was a recall defect which the manufacturer failed to honor. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure and current mileages were unavailable.

My 2000 chevrolet impala is causing a great deal of financial hardships and is leaving me stranded in awkward situations. at unpredictable times it will not start. i turn the key and nothing. i took it to a gm dealer and they put a new ignition switch on the car and it was fine for 6 months. cost $500. i often could wait 10 to 15 minutes and it would start. but it began happening more and more. i took it in to a mechanic, he ran the codes and determined it was the ignition switch. cost $450 and within a month it began doing the same thing. i got stranded and had to have it towed to a gm dealer and they put a new battery on it and removed all the after market unlocking mechanisms and charged $550. three days later we have the same problem. it seems to be connected to the pass lock system. there has to be a defect of some sort going on in the whole starting electrical system. *tr

on feb.10th or 11th.my neighbor was attempting to jump start my car because the battery had failed due to a 3 day snow storm. after turned the ignition the second time, there was a loud boom. when we checked the engine, we noted the manifold cover had cracked into several pieces. also the wires were on fire. my neighbor quickly extinguished the flames. later, i went to my dealer(frank z chevrolet in dayton, oh. about the problem. i was told by the assistant service manager that the repairs could cost from $1,800-$2,000 mainly due to the fire damage. since i have been unemployed for 18 months, i have not had the car towed to the dealer for an estimate of actual damage.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the combination control switch was defective. whenever the high beams were on and the low beams were activated they would not function independently. the gear lever box that was illuminated at night also failed. the vin was not available. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 208,000.

My 2000 impalas pass lock system stops the car from starting for up to 45 minutes at a time. i try to start the car and it wont turn over or do anything. it happens every time i try to start the car. it leaves my family stranded when we try to go places. what were to happen if there were an emergency? i'd be stranded. also the steering clunks alot when i turn. *tr

Body control module, pass lock sensor, ignition switch. will not allow car to start correctly often not at all. if research is done there is thousands of complaints on gm vehicles with this system having the same recurring problem. gm refuses to admit that this is an issue with this system. i have not personally had a injury caused by this problem but the potential for an injury is there. if i can not start my vehicle because of this problem it can and has left me in a position that is potentially hazardous. *tr

Passlock 2 system fails. vehicle shuts off and can not be restarted for 15 minutes. this can happen when you are driving or parked. if it keeps happening when driving, it will cause a serious, if not fatal, accident. this theft deterrent system fails 2-3 times per week. the only solution is to replace the lock cylinder, which is about $500 and only available through the dealer. this solution does not always work though. i have had mine replaced twice within a year and it needs it again. gm should be responsible for this and recall it and fix it right. if you search for "pass lock system failure" on the internet, you will see thousands of people having the same problems. *tr

2000 chevy impala 3.8l passlock security light issue. my car will not start b/c it thinks it's being stolen and it disables the car from starting. *tr

I currently drive a 2000 chevy impala. my car fails to start because of the passlock feature. it has happen 4 times in the past 2 months. the most recent time occurred while i was actually driving my vehicle on the road. luckily i was on a residential street blocks away from my home and not on the highway in the middle of nowhere. *tr

While driving, for no reason at all, my 2000 chevy impala just dies on me. it locks up and won't restart for 30 minutes. this happens 3 or 4 times per week. this is extremely dangerous because it has happened at different speeds and road conditions. it has been occurring for the last 30 days. i researched online and found a blog where at least 30 other owners were having the same problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the security light illuminated in the vehicle. she believes that this caused the vehicle to stall at times or not crank at all. the vehicle would completely shut off and fail to restart. the following day, the vehicle still would not restart after several attempts. the failure occurred almost every other day and only the security light was illuminating constantly. the dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. the current mileage was 95,908 and failure mileage was 93,103.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. while driving the transmission kept slipping in and out of gear. also the electronic stability control system caused the vehicle to drift to the right or left. also, the lights for the instrument control panel failed. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic and the technician located several diagnostic error codes. the failure mileage was 173,009. updated 1/5/10 *cn the dealer replaced a sash light switch, ut that didn't resolve the problem. updated 01/06/10.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact replaced the computer chips for the turn signal and another unspecified component and was charged $268 for the repairs. he stated that his vehicle only had 60,000 miles. the failure mileage was 60,000.

My faulty passlock system causes car not to recognize the key and disables the engine for anywhere from 10minutes to several hours. sometimes the "security" light will appear in the message center while i'm driving, but most times it happens without warning. i will put in the key, but when i turn it, the engine is disabled and the "security" light blinks. i have to wait 10minutes for it to restart, and more often than not, it just trips itself continually and i'll be stuck for 30minutes or more. i have been left stranded countless times in the heat, and dread even stopping for gas for fear that my car won't start again. it is a constant problem when i travel out of town, as i fear that if i stop in a small town, i'll be completely stranded if my car doesn't start back up. two weeks ago i drove out of town and went 6 hours one way without stopping because the security light was on. this is a huge problem, and a hazard to people's health. it's also dangerous if i get a flat tire on the highway and it won't start back up, then i am in danger for no reason. i've also worried about parking in a scarier part of town, and not being able to just drive away safely if i see some shady people lurking around. there is no fix for this, as the dealer will charge $600 and not correct the issue. my 2000 impala should be recalled, as this obviously faulty passlock system poses a threat to human health and safety. i will never buy a chevy, gm, or dodge car again because of this issue that chevy has continued to ignore. thousands complain on chevy forums but nothing has been done about it. big big problem here. *tr

Bought 2000 chevy impala on feb 8,2009,and have had multiple really bad problems. bad shake in front end, pulls to right really bad, has sevear cooling problems, turn signal failure more then working, gear shift problems, air bubbles backing up in coolant bottle, low coolant light always on, check engine ight always on major oil leakage under car body not on ground. loss of coolant but no idea where its going. serging problem in electrical system, and wiring conections and plugs not connected to anything. icnition problems key wont stay in and can be pulled out with car running.have replaced radiator, all hoses, all gaskets, thermistate, water pump, belts, done tuneup, oil change, done brakes, replaced sencers, battery, and other things. im pissed and very angry with chevy and gm for all the problems they have with there vehicals and not fixing the problems.

I have what i am calling the "classic gm passlock problem" with my 2000 chevy impala. it started about 2 years ago very randomly not starting. on november 28, 2008 i reported a vehicle problem to the local general motors dealership. my '2000 chevy impala anti-theft warning light was occasionally coming on and vehicle would not start at times.' the dealership charged me $812.00 to replace faulty passlock module, new ignition switch and cylinder. i'm concern about all the work being done as stated and charged for factory defects, many vehicle owners have had the same problem with their gm auto. in addition, i did not receive a new recoded key. second, the replacement part for the faulty passlock module was not listed on the invoice as an itemized part ordered and replaced as appear other items. thirdly, if the part not listed on the invoice, how is the warranty covered? i later learned that the door, trunk and ignition should be operated by one key. and if procedure requires ignition switch lock cylinder to be replaced, new ignition switch lock cylinder should be recoded to old key. also, passlock sensor was an integral part of ignition switch assembly, but i still paid too much; i am seeking a full refund. *tr

Passlock system intermittently stalls my car & interferes with the dashboard lights. i have a 2000 chevy impala. *tr

I have a 2000 impala that does not have traction control. it has a no start problem. it won't turn over and i have to sit there anywhere from 10 to 30 mins waiting for this piece of crap to start. i think somebody needs to make gm recall these cars to fix them. its time to put the consumer first and not these money hungry corporations like general motors!!! *tr

Veh: 200 chevy impala ls yr:2000 fault: in the past few weeks this vech. has been experiencing faulty turn signals. sometimes they work and sometimes they stop, and then after cycling the hazard switch they return. i have researched the internet seeking information and i found that gm has done a recall on certain models in the same class year. i also contact the dealer and they said impala was not part of the recall even if the switch was the same used in the malibu. (recalled) nhtsa recall number 03v327. i am now unable to purchase a switch in the market because of the recall and the supply has been depleted. (told that from the dealer). in my mind gm should be conducting another recall before someone has an accident. *tr

Like everyone else w/ a 2000 impala i have faulty, non-working turn signals all the way to the major problems of the intake gasket problem to the most severe - the problem of the car stalling while driving or sitting at a light. and no one can pin pointe the actual problem. my car used to just stall out at least once or twice a day while driving. now the car has given up and i'm about to too. it starts when it wants... i wish life worked that way but it doesn't. today i decided to research recalls on the car and found out everyone has the problems i do but chevy has not taken care of anyone. please take note this is serious. *tr

My 2000 impala has intermittent problems with the direction signals. at times they work fine and other times they don't. sometimes while the directional is working it will stop for no reason. this has resulted in several near rear end collisions even with arm signals. this occurs on a nearly daily basis. i am waiting to see if there is a recall as the cost to replace is approximately $500 as the directional signal is sold as a single unit (directional arm and flashing unit are 1 piece). the unit itself is over $300. *tr

I bought a used 2000 chevy impala for my 75 year old mother in law. the car has a problem with starting and the security module. you can drive the car to the store or where-ever but when you get back into the car it won't start again. you usually have to wait 10 to 40 minutes with key in ignition for car to start again. there are a lot of people out there on the internet with the same problem. we already paid over $700 for a new starter and a new security module but that did not fix the problem. other people claim they have spent thousands replacing all sorts of items at recommendation of chevy dealerships to no avail. it seems that gm/chevrolet should institute a recall on this vehicle. it is also a problem in the 2002 and 2003 models of the chevy impala. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly decelerated and became unresponsive. the failure recurred sporadically. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the ignition switch was replaced. the manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. the failure mileage was 82,897.

Car randomly doesn't start. when i first got the car(6 mos ago) i replaced the starter having no idea that this has been happening over and over again to many impala owners if not all of them. started fine for 2 weeks and it's been happening ever since. sometimes when the car doesn't start it trips the passlock and i have to wait anywhere from 10 to 30mins before it resets in order to try starting again. i've been driving the car and at quick stops i have to leave it running to be sure i won't get stuck there for 30 mins or so. i've also been stuck at gas stations waiting 10 to 30 mins(at the pump) for it to start again (very embarrassing). after all the complaints i've read i'm afraid to spend anymore money on this problem. *tr

One day i was just going to work like and my car wouldn't start. the security light was flashing so i referred to the manual. i found out it was the passlock feature on the car and it was malfunctioning. i don't have the time or the money to fix the problem. *tr

Received 2000 chevy impala as an inheritance. within 2 weeks car at times would not start. all lights on dash would illuminate followed by the yellow/orange security light. this is due to a passlock problem where the passlock system thinks that something other than a legitimate key is being used to try and start the car. my sister had this problem and at times would have to turn the key in the ignition to "on position" and wait 10 minutes. after several days of research i was able to determine that to reset the passlock system the key needed to be left in the ignition switch in the "on position" then removed and repeated two more times (3 times, 30 minutes total). after doing this i had no more problems. my only problem is there are lots of people out there that are not mechanically inclined, and plenty of people have had to had their vehicles towed and face a diagnosis fee (and plenty of times misdiagnosis). according to all the information readily available chevy/gm has to know about this and i consider it shameful that they do not allow some kind of concession or modification so that a customer of theirs with a legitimate key cannot start the vehicle. *tr

2000 chevrolet impala. consumer writes in regards to water enters passenger compartment through the cabin air filer. *smd the consumer stated a $5.00 piece of plastic would have prevented water from entering the passenger compartment. also, the vehicle would not start. the body control module was replaced. the consumer stated the electrical problems started in 2008 with a bad blower resistor. other electrical issues were the driver's side window, the outside rear-view mirror control and the hazard switch. the driver's heated seat stopped working. *jb
