Was pulling out of my garage when all my electrical shut down no power. had to have the car towed to ricks automotive and they repaired my starter $ 427.00. i would like to get reimbursed from gm and need to know how ge to my money back? i had trouble with my ignition switch for quite some time and not letting me remove the key twice. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted moments later. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system). the approximate failure mileage was 118,000.

My name is [xxx], i am launching this complaint, because even though i received a recall notice. when i called the dealership to have my vehicle repaired i explained to them that i already have an issue with my ignition (i cannot get my key out of the ignition without using the release button). what bothered me was the fact that i had to go online to see if this was a issue. what i found was that gm knew of the problem and had a solution as well as the nhtsa also new about it. i am going to inform gm as well [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Power steering motor shorted out, when we took it to chevy dealer we were told that gm would not sell the motor separately as the steering column went out shortly after the power steering motor, and were also told there had been a recall on some hhr's. the price to repair is $1500. i am 71 years old, my disabled husband is 72 years old and we only have social security as income. tried to get some compensation from gm and after almost 3 weeks they told me they would not help me because i bought the car used from a dealer other than a chevy dealer, that it was out of warranty and over mileage. if the steering goes out there most likely be an accident of some kind. we have no other transportation, i do feel this is a definite safety issue. any help you can provide to have gm honor the recall would be appreciated. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the key seized in the ignition and the vehicle failed to shift to park. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the ignition switch cylinder was replaced along with the battery. the manufacturer was contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 132,441.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph on a highway the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that they could not duplicate the failure. the contact received notices for nhtsa recall campaign number 14v047000 (air bags , electrical system) and 14v171000 (electrical system) but was informed that the part was not available. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000.

After abiding by the recall to change the ignition switch, the car starts freaking out randomly. the dash lights start going on and off. loose power steering, power brakes and the car just stops. you can be going 70 miles an hour down the highway and the car just gives out. the dealership refuses to fix it unless i am willing to pay all the fees. i had a second dealership replace some fuses but after 2 days it started doing it again. after the first episodes, i called and opened a ticket with chevrolet, but because the dealership i used didn't want to mess with the car any more they were not very helpful. now i am driving a death trap because i can't afford a new car and i won't let my children drive or be in the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the ignition failed and the key could not be release from the ignition switch. the contact had to move gear shifter lever several times in order to shut the engine off. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the failure was located at the gear shifter and the dealer replaced the gear shifter system. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 38,402. ..updated 08-07-13 *bf

The power steering chimes and then the dashboard displays power steering. the wheel is becoming harder to turn especially in curves and making turns. on the highway the whole steering wheel almost gets so tight you can't get into another lane. on the street i can start the car and it will reset if i let it sit but then it will just chime again and go right back out. this is so frustrating because i contacted gm customer service on several occasions and the hold time is crazy 3-4 hrs listening to music and then being told that there is no recall on my car at this time but there is a lifetime warranty which the local dealership won't honor or even look at the car until they see it on chevy website even though several reps have sent email notices to the gm local head mgr. they said we will look at this as a case by case. this is very very unsafe. it's not like gm is not aware of this issue, then being told that the parts are not available and the recall notices have not been sent out yet, and then being told after they fixed the ignition switch problem in my car and this was taking place at the same time that they could not look or do anything about this. gm is aware of this! i'm scared that i am going to be driving and lose complete control do i have to die before gm will take responsibility for this. not like they are not aware of this issue because they are and it should be fixed! getting the run around is so frustrating when they had my car fixing the ignition switch that was on recall. *tr

Was driving vehicle (chevy hhr) at highway speed when a warning wassage displayed asyin power steering, a bell started dinging and stering the vehicle became difficult. i was in a curve on a hill. i wasw able to safely get off the highway and turned the car off, checked fuses, found no problem. restarted the car and it started working again. had now done this about 15 times after the car warms up or travelded about 20 miles. has happened to my wife a few times and causes her didiculty in stering the car with her recovery from shoulder surgery. in researching on line and i see this car has been recalled in canada, and the same parts are used in the chevy covalt and has recalls for the problem in the us. why not the chevy hhr been recalled? *tr

The vehicle lost power steering control. a chime sounded and a message appeared on the instrument panel. the power steering cuts out regularly since, every time the vehicle is driven. i have contacted gm numerous times, they insist that my vehicle is not included in the recent power steering recalls even though it uses the same exact power steering motor as the vehicles that are included (my local chevrolet dealer has verified this and has contacted gm on my behalf too). i am frustrated and angry that gm is still neglecting to address this safety issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact was driving 20 mph when the power steering warning light "power steering displayed on information center, chimes audible as if door is ajar, illuminated as the power steering assist failed and the steering wheel became abnormally resistant. additionally, the contact mentioned that the keys would fail to eject from the ignition intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 83,594 and the current mileage was 91,000. updated 5/13/14*cn..!....updated 07/31/14 *bf the consumer stated the incident occurred again, while driving 45 mph. the vehicle shuddered and vibrated and he lost power steering. the consumer pulled over, shut the vehicle off, and re-started it again, and everything went back to normal, as if nothing happened. the dealer informed the consumer, a power steering was ordered and they would install under warranty. updated 08/05/14 *tr

Pulled into garage, placed shifter in park, ignition key would not rotate to last detent position and key could not be removed, leaving some electrical items on. shifter button was depressed and would not unlock but shift could be put in any gear. i searched internet for problem and learned how to remove cover under ignition switch and manipulate a button inside the column to allow key to be released. car can be started again but to shut off and remove key, same process required. a big problem i have found on internet from other owners is that instead of paying the outrageous cost to fix, many drivers are doing the above, which is a dangerous situation because the shift lever can easily, accidentally be shifted into another gear while in motion ! this problem is caused be a metal pin, mounted in an inferior plastic piece, which breaks or otherwise allows the metal pin to fall out of position. this is reported in all year models, at all mileages. my car is a 2006 with 11000 miles- 7 years old, and obviously hardly used, let alone abused, and of course, out of warranty ! gm has upgraded the replacement part with a shroud of metal reinforcing the plastic, and has repaired and replaced under warranty on models from 2009 to date. this is obviously a design defect, and also a safety issue. gm needs to recall all models with this defect ! they are not offering any solution for a repair that many owners have paid up to $600 of their own money, and i for one am going to fight this in all ways possible. gov.'t, media, bbb, social media, etc ! review the internet by searching " chevy hhr ignition key stuck" . this also affects chevy cobalt and pontiac g5. *tr

Was snowing got car high centered in driveway could not get ignition to turn off tried off and on for a hour finally frustrated went in home the next morning of course my battery was dead. this happened within the first two weeks of buying the car. then dealership came out got vehicle started took to shop. i got the car back a week later. then was driving car and on the weekend on my way to work message on dash says reduced engine power and would not let me go more than 30 mph. the roads were completely dry so road conditions were not the issue. i again called the guy who sold me the car he switch me over to the mechanic who said bring the car in next time it does that otherwise they wont be able to tell what went wrong. then the next week my front tire was wobbling like it was going to come off and it was not the lug bolts because i checked them so back to the shop again. they said some bolt was loose under the hood to the front end and i should be fine. then i believe it was a week or two later the ignition locked up on me again and they blamed that on me. i have had the car for a year and owe more than it is worth so cannot trade it in because i owe three times more than it is worth. a month ago again the message came on the dash reduce engine power on my way to work live 11 miles out of town so drove on the shoulder of the road with my flashers on to let other cars by. among that i had the windshield leek water in my floor on passenger side every time it rained. the dealership had put in a new windshield and didn't get part under the hood back on correctly. i could go on and on but bottom line after buying the car it was in the shop three times before i even got plates for it. i have been really frustrated with the car but not much that i know to do since owe too much on it. *tr

As i began to pull out from the parking lot after work one evening, i began to hear a chime like tone, at the same time a message appeared on the dashboard that read "power steering..." i turned off the engine, checked under the hood for a possible broken power steering belt, but could not find the power steering pump .re started the engine and the power steering worked fine for about a week. i later discovered the power system assist consist of an electric power steering motor and not a hydraulic. as time passed, the problem became more frequent. now, once the car begins to move, it takes only a couple of minutes, if not seconds, before i hear the chime, the message shows up, and here i go again, struggling to steer with one hand and shifting with the other, at times through very heavy traffic. my car is a standard shift. it has become very difficult to cross lanes wile steering with one hand at the same time you are attempting to shift gears during heavy and slow traffic. i am beginning to suffer shoulder and neck pain which compounds the problem. i called gm on this issue but the gm rep. said my vehicle was not included on the power steering recall, only recalled for ignition switch problem. i believe that if the ignition switch and power steering are recalls for other models, my 2006 hhr should also be recalled for ignition switch and the power steering issues. *tr

Received letter from chevrolet dated 1-2015 stating that "some 2006 hhr's" may have a defect which causes power steering (ps) to fail at any time. called local dealer to have it repaired but my car (vin) is not on the recall list. the exact sequence of ps failure described in letter has occurred with my car multiple times but they, chevrolet dealer, does not guarantee that this will be fixed without my paying the bill as it (vin) is not on their list. my car should be entered into the recall list as this is a manufacturers mechanical defect and needs to be recalled and repaired at gm's cost. this is the 3rd letter (recall) on this car; ignition cylinder, transmission lock and now power steering! *tr

I had came back home and put the car into park, i turned the engine off, and tried to pull out the key and the key was stuck in the on position. *tr

Contact reported that door locks would not operate with key fob nor when activating the door lock switches on the door. took vehicle to two different dealers trying to get the ignition recall fixed which took a total of four visits. while car was in for recall, addressed an unrelated electrical solenoid problem and asked the dealer to look at the door lock issue. dealer notified owner that passenger door and rear seat left and right door lock actuators had failed (3 of 4 total). asked dealer if they had seen this unusual condition on any other hhr's and they said no. showed them the 30+ issues logged on this site and they only commented that the hhr was not the best gm product ever built but there was no dealer fix for this issue. contact was advised that it would be $340 per door to fix and service was declined (after $80 diagnostic charge to verify that door locks did not work). *tr

Power steering message on dash; security light comes on; rpm, speed, and gas gauges jump, transmission jerks, clicking in center console under shifter. after turning engine off for period of time runs like normal, restart an drive for period of time and power steering goes out while driving. *tr

Water intrusion when raining leaks on electrical components like blower motor , wiring, insulation, and floor of passenger side ..once the water corrodes the electrical components they stop working... gm corp has this problem for over 20 years on several models and makes.. very bad design..they will not recall .. this can be serious safety issue .. if the electrical defrost motor will not work .. then you cannot see out the windshield.. crash can ensue.. they need to change the water evacuation system from below the windshield...see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnykjlhusxi this is about others who have had this problem with many gm models... *tr

Chevrolet hhr's have a tsb on the rear liftgate not opening. it is faulty and many complaints i have found via google. if a child or animal is trapped in the rear they cannot get out, there is no pull lever to open the liftgate. they would have to climb over the seats to get out during a potential fire. *tr

My wife was driving on the freeway going 70 mph and all the alarms, indicating lights came on and then the care loss power. *tr

I don't know if its an electrical problem tc light goes on and engine light goes on, car jumps alittle this has been happening for a while, this car is only 49000 miles i bought it brand new and paid it off like a mercedes benz since my credit was screwed up and now i am having problem am retired and wife not working please help us out i need my car to get around, i didn't think i was going to have any problems for 10 yrs ........................................... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that she was unable to remove the key from the ignition. in order to remove the key, the contact had to shift in and out of park several times. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 142,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the vehicle shifted out of park without the key being in the ignition. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 21,000 and the current miles was 43,590.

Had a new key cut to replace a lost key. shortly after i retrieved the vehicle, key i was using got stuck in the ignition. i got it out once but i was not able to do so the next time i drove the vehicle. apparently, there is a known issue with the keys getting stuck in the ignitions of the hhr's. fortunately, my car was not running at the time the key got stuck in the ignition as i have discovered several other has in my research. two employees i spoke with at bachman auto group (steve and tony) informed me they already knew about the key getting stuck in the ignition of the hhr's. if this is a known issue, how...can there not be a recall on this to have them repaired. i contacted gm corporate customer service and from the sound of things i am going to liable to pay for the repairs even though they knew these vehicles had a history of the ignition locking up when the key is still in the ignition. they knew of this issue. i feel there should be a recall to have the ignition replaced to correct this design flaw. *js

Originally the power steering stopped working randomly when driving but now it stops working after 30 seconds or so every time car is started and failure alert is displayed. also while driving the power door locks unlocked, the gauges stopped working, the car hard shifted down, and it also started to display it was running at least 20 degrees hotter than normal. this has happened twice but seems fine later. *tr

I am a 35 year old mother of 3 and i recently had a dangerous close call while driving my 2006 chevy hhr. i was driving with my children on board and i suddenly lost power steering. i quickly managed to control my vehicle but it was a close call. i took my vehicle to my nearest chevy dealer for inspection. i was told what was the exact problem with the steering column and the estimated cost of repair would be $1600.00. i went home and quickly researched into the problem. i found out that i was not the only owner of a chevy hhr to have this similiar problem. i found out also that the chevy cobalt (which also has the same steering column) has a recall on it but not the chevy hhr. it is only logical that the chevy hhr should have a recall also because the steering column is identical. public safety should be the number one concern. *tr

This vehicle was being towed behind a motorhome. when we arrived at our destination the battery was dead. the battery is located in the rear hatch section. we were able to manually unlock the driver door with a key. there is no key lock on the outside to the hatch section to access the battery to charge it. i climbed inside the car and got into the back hatch area to locate a manual lock (there was none ),. i was trapped, and then had to get back to the front to get out the driver's door. if there was an accident and that was the only way to get out of the vehicle, i would be trapped inside. i have tried to contact chevy about this problem, but have not heard anything to date. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the front driver and passenger's side door handles were fractured. the dealer was made aware of the failure and stated that the door panel on both doors would have to be replaced. additionally, the vehicle stalled while driving approximately 20 mph. the contact also experienced difficulty steering on another occasion. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Display showed power steering error and transmission box was clicking. car started bucking as if transmission was going out. took to dealer who could not replicate error after three days. picked up car and now cd player shows err o. this is frustrating as heck! dealer did say that there was a bulletin that 2006 hhr's did have this type of problem. dealer rep. owns 2007 hhr and hoped he did not have the same issue. spent over $700 total and problem still there? chevrolet / gm where is your loyalty to your loyal customers? issue a recall and fix these issues before there are deaths because of them and you are forced to do what is right by the gov.'t. *tr

I was driving on interstate 195 in nj & highspeed & power steering went out & whole dic instruments went haywire car started bucking & almost lost control of vehicle & went into other lane with on coming tractor trailer there. i pulled over & shut car off waited 5 mins & all was fine,i thoughtstrange so i continued & it did same thing 2 days later going 45 mph. dealer cant solve it but its happening to lots of hhr on hhr forums. there all complaining about electronic power steering motor is bad & cost is over $500 to repair, however the pontiac & chevy cobalt which have same frame & parts as hhr are all being recalled but nothing about the hhr??? how is this possible when the cobalt & hhr are same car but different body & made by gm. i know & see alot of older folks drive these hhr & i'm 6' 250 lbs & was able to handle this to safety but these older folks wont be so lucky. its extremely dangerous to drive when the power steering goes out when your doing 70 on an interstate with everyone doing same speed & sometimes faster. something must be done from gm to correct this problem when 100-1000 are experiencing same problem & that the cobalt has been recalled but not the hhr & its the same exact car. i hope it gets resolved before someone gets killed or badly injured, concerned hhr owner. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy hhr with 44,000 miles. while driving the power steering light came on the dash, then the power steering went out, almost causing me to loose control of the car in a curve. i am a 65 year old female, i do not have the strength in my arms to maneuver a vehicle that looses power steering unexpectedly. i made it home and did a search on the internet for a recall, i found where gm recalled 1.3 million cobalts with the same electric motor as the hhr, however, there is no recall for the hhr. gm is well aware of the problem. hhr owners are all over the internet complaining about this power steering problem. i am told that it could cost over $2000.00 to fix this problem.i am a senior citizen with a limited income, i can't afford to pay to have the car fixed or to purchase a new vehicle. i read on the internet that several people have already been hurt due to this defect. this is a very serious safety problem that needs to be addresses by gm and fixed as soon as possible, before someone is seriously injured or killed. Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the battery died without warning. the battery was replaced, but the vehicle could not be started. the engine shut down warning light was also illuminated. the contact spoke with the manufacturer in regards to the failure and the manufacturer advised that the engine would need to be reset. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 55,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while parked, the contact attempted to exit the vehicle when the driver's side door handle fractured and became detached from the vehicle. several weeks later, the failure occurred on the passenger's side door handle as well. the contact stated that months later she experienced issues with the key becoming stuck in the ignition while the vehicle was powered on and off. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 75,000. the vin was unavailable.

I put my car in park and when i went to take the key out of the ignition it would not come out. i realized that the key would not come out because the gear shifter piece was pushed all the way in, it was broke. this meant that my car was left on and the battery was drained because i could not turn my car off. now my car will not start at all the battery is charged but the car will not turnover. i have looked online and have found that there are many complaints concerning the same problem with this vehicle. i am told by the dealership that i have to pay $710 to have this problem fixed. can you please look into this because this seems to be a big problem. *tr

Key doesn't come out of ignition, blinkers do not turn off on own. have to manually turn off blinkers. key get stuck in ignition, luckily went online to see about the problem and found hundreds of people with same issue. a quick video showed me that the defect happens to a lot of people and you have to go under the steering column and pop off a cover and manually push a little button to pop the key out of the ignition, the car will continue to run,if you don't do this! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced an intermittent failure in which the ignition would not shut off. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed of how to release the key through the steering column. the dealer showed the contact how to take off the panel below the steering column, where a switch could be engaged to shut off the vehicle. the contact stated that the make shift remedy only functioned successfully for a short period of time. the vehicle had been taken back to the dealer. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 104,000. updated 05/31/12*lj

Gear shifter pin broke & now won't lock in gear. the key cannot be removed except by removing a cap on the steering column & pressing a release button. defective gear shifter pin. ------------------------------------- i went home & tried to take my key out but it would not release so since the car would not turn completely off the battery died. i found out on the internet that this has happened to thousands of people. i found out how to remove the plug on the steering column to press the release to take out the key. the gear shifter will not lock so it is easy for it to slip into neutral or out of park & roll away. i don't have the $500 they said it will take to fix it so i have to live with it. i always have to make sure to lock my emergency brake & have to hit the release to take my key out. this is dangerous & so wrong of gm not to recall this when so many have had this problem. this is their defect & not the customers. *tr

Key stuck in ignition, key will not turn to off position to allow removal of key. have to use "column lock release" on steering column to trip plunger to allow removal of key. have service appointment at jim sigel chevrolet. grants pass, oregon. for sept. 19. 2011 ( next monday ) for complete replacement of the shifter (automatic trans. ) posts on the internet indicate 6 out of 10 hhr's have this failure. this vehicle is beyond the calendar warranty of 36 months. but it sure is under the mileage warranty of 36000. *tr

2006 chevy hhr :: problem :: power steering message on dash and hard to steer, abs light on, transmission making car buck while driving, and speedometer is bouncing. this is the second time it has happened, last time dealer found only "communication codes" and did not fix anything so nothing was covered by the extended warranty. that was 9 months ago at 50140 miles. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the key would become stuck in the ignition and the vehicle could not be turned off. the contact has to continuously move the shifter through the gears and turn the vehicle on and off several times before the key could be released from the ignition. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 35,000.

Key will not come out of the ignition when in park due to a plastic part in the shifter breaking. this will not allow the shift lock actuator to engage and release the keys. there is an ignition unlocking mechanism under the steering column but that leaves the gear shifter able to move freely from gear at all times, even while driving. this is occurs everyday. the dealer replaces at the owner's expense with the same defective part. *tr

2006 chevrolet hhr. consumer states several problems with vehicle *tgw the consumer stated his sons vehicle had a severe shimmy in the steering wheel and became progressively worse when the brake was applied. the pads and rotors were replaced twice and the third time the rotors were machined, but the problem continued. there was also a strange noise coming from the front suspension, but the dealer was unable to pinpoint the problem. at 42,000 miles the air condition made a loud screeching noise for 2 minutes, then stopped working. at 68,000 miles, a metal skid plate had fallen from underneath the vehicle. soon after, the exhaust was very loud. the vehicle was taken to the repair shop and the consumer was informed the catalytic converter had cracked. the vehicle lost power and a cylinder had to be replaced, the check engine light would come on and then go off, the temperature gauge did not work, so the air condition only worked if the check engine light was off. the door locks did not work, the radio worked intermittently, the sun visor would fall down at random times. there were times when the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated even with an alignment, new struts, shocks and good tires, the vehicle continually pulled to the right. *jb

Power steering fail while i was driving my 2006 hhr. makes it hard to turn. *tr

My key continues to get stuck in the ignition. about 4 months ago this happened and i took my car back to the dealer, they charged me $50.00 to get the key out they say they greased the ignition i guess. i was looking through my car manual and it tells you how to get the key out of the ignition.i don't think the dealer charging me $50.00 was fair. is there some way that can be fixed? i can not afford $50.00 and i'm get tired of putting my finger in the hole under the steering wheel to release the key. *tr
