Gm recall 11195a - poor drivability/ safety/ emissions recall for camshaft position actuator solenoids. my 2.4l 2011 equinox (approx. 47,000 at purchase 11/16 & 71,000 current) is now at days chevrolet in acworth ga. due to 1) shutting off multiple times while driving, 2) stalling at idle (fwd & rev). i initially visited days on 12/22/17 to start an oil consumption test related to 15285c, as my car presented with stalling/hesitation/surging and loss of 3 qts oil. as of today (1/3/18), i returned to days when it shut off while driving again. the dealership's diagnosis is intake & exhaust camshaft solenoid failure. i suspected this based on code p0010 recorded by my diagnostic unit. so i got a rental, left my car for the camshaft repairs, and researched recalls. the 2011 2.4l has many known engine/powertrain/safety issues. lo and behold, i found the recall on the camshaft diagnosis. it reads exact to what i'm experiencing. my next step was contacting days to ask why i'm being charged for a recalled repair. i was informed that they were unaware of recall 11195a. my service advisor, rob, looked up the recall and discovered that there is in fact a recall for the exact diagnosis, yet could not explain why my vin is not included. he advised that the car is exhibiting exactly what the recall is issued for and that it's clearly a known safety issue, yet gm will not cover my repair because "the vin is not included". i very much believe this is gm's responsibility and gm should cover the repair at no cost because it's a result of their faulty engineering. i contacted gm customer service tonight and was told there's nothing gm can do. i strongly disagree. gm can do the right thing. i requested a case be opened and was given #83734190593 after pressing (paul) for one. in the end. gm was of no help and my vin is still in limbo, so i'm filing my complaint here.
Rattles when starting the vehicle. smells of gasoline from vehicle when running. this began in december 2017 and continues to this day
Oil consumption - have just received the warning oil pressure low - stop engine. come to find out it is only covered before 120,000 miles or by september of this year. i received no notification of this issue. i have documented all service charges and timing of additional oil used. talked with gm and they will not offer to reimburse for charges incurred.
Without warning my check oil pressure light illuminated. i had less than a block to get to the side of the highway before my engine failed. after having it inspected by 3 different inspectors, it was determined that my pcv valve froze and caused my rear main seal to leak all my oil very rapidly. this in turn caused my engine to seize. this pvc issue is a known issue and no recall has been issued. this is something gm needs to take owership of and correct! this is an extreme safety hazard!
Gm 2.4 ecotec engine plugged pcv valve. valve was found by dealer as being frozen shut causing the crankcase to pressurize and blow out the read crank shaft seal costing $1817 to repair. this is not an unknown problem for gm. other makes and models of a several year span with the ecotec 2.4 have a service bulletin 14882 to cover total cost of repairs for this exact same problem. gm is refusing to cover this engine because it wasn't part of the "special recall" issued march 2015. it has become apparent the recall needs to be expanded to cover all the ecotec 2.4 engines. had this vehicle been on a highway or heavy traffic the engine would have blown or seized due to lack of oil. this ecotec engine has had many problems resulting in recalls. timing chains prematurely wearing out to piston rings wearing and causing excessive oil consumption. the vehicle had just started an oil consumption test for this very problem. after a fresh oil change the engine promptly blew out over 4 quarts of oil in less than 15 miles. had i not checked the oil level for the oil consumption start point the car would have been driven until the engine seized up more than likely causing an accident..... which brings me to another point. do i need to contact the epa over the oil leaks on countless gm vehicles? under my estimate this single gm vehicle dumped approximately 2 gallons of synthetic oil to the environment before the problem was diagnosed. how many thousands of gallons are being dumped due to gm refusal to own up to their bad design? i understand this website may be to deal with more safety concerns but gm insisted i file a complaint with you..
The vehicle has suffered several engine failure since i purchased it. several sensors and module have gone out, costs of over $1500.00 to date. faulty electrical panel failed to indicate the vehicle was low on oil, and overheating. the oil was changed and within a month, the oil had depleted for unknown reasons. none of the indicator lights signaled and the engine stopped while driving, the mechanic said the engine froze up and it is a total loss. the mechanic said the vehicle only had two quarts of oil but was not signaling any oil problems and it should have. the sensors and electric panel were malfunctioning. the dealer never disclosed any recalls to me when i bought the vehicle used. the mechanic is getting the history together of work performed. i will upload as i get them.
Engine oil is burning by passing through and going out the exhaust.
The vehicle was parked and i went to start it and it wouldn't start, so i got it towed to the garage. they found a lot of noise coming from the engine so they checked the compression and found 0 psi on all cylinders. they found the valves bent and top of pistons smashed. excessive engine oil consumption due to piston ring wear caused the engine to fail. the consumer stated the manufacturer would not provide a reimbursement for the vehicle's repair costs. *js
3 complaints contained within - complaint #1 - i have had multiple issues with cam shaft actuators and exhaust issues in this vehicle. this has caused my vehicle to stall in busy intersections and to also go into "limp" mode on the interstate. going 70mph and the engine going into limp mode is dangerous. thankfully there were alert driver around me that were able to help me get to the emergency lanes safely. there were recalls for this vehilce for some of these issues - but conveniently - my vehicle was not recalled. three different gm/chevrolet dealerships have worked on my vehicle and have contacted gm on my behalf - but gm has covered no fixes and i have been out over $2000 on these fixes that were covered under recalls - but not on my vehicle. 2nd complaint - i now have fuel pump issues. again, a recall was issued in july 2016 for fuel pump issues. the recall is for the same year, make and engine as mine....but my vehicle is not covered under recall.....even my vehicle will stall out while idling at intersections and again - safety issue. i have children and do not feel safe with this happening. gm seems to not be concerned. 3rd issue - takata recall - my air bag alert light will come on - but i have not received a recall for this issue - yet again - my vehicle seems to not be on the list. safety issue - yes. i have had an open case number with gm corporate for at least 3 years - but suggestions always seem to be on my dime....not theirs. at this point - my vehicle is a "lemon" in my eyes...and if me or my family get injured because of these issues...well.....
For the last 5000 miles, at times, when idling at a stoplight or intersection, the engine jumps even with the foot on the break. this is frightening in that it feels like the vehicle may accelerate on its own and hit the vehicle in front or go into the intersection.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while operating the vehicle, an audible ticking noise was present from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer classic chevrolet (6877 center st, mentor, oh (440-602-6020) where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft rear oil seal was blown due to moisture in the pcv. the contact was informed that the failure occurred as a result of driving in extremely low weather temperatures for extended periods. the vehicle was not yet repaired. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 96,500. *tt *tr
I have a 2011 equinox it's got 146,000 miles . i am faithful with oil changes and last week when i went to get it changed i was told my engine had no oil. my oil light never came on, my check engine light had just turned on the day prior. i was told there wasn't any leaks. so after some research i find there is a oil consumption problem, however since my miles are i've 120,000 i don't qualify for the repair. this is not right! my car could have burnt up because my light never indicated a problem and gm never notified me of he issues!
Engine stalled out while driving and almost caused accident. timing chain slipped and ruined my entire engine, no warnings, no signals or none of any kind. reading alot of complaints about this same problem and there should of been a recall on this 2.4l engine from gm a long time ago! maintenance has been maintained and up to date since car was first driven off lot.
Stalling out while sitting in drive at red light. got up for work and turned truck on, sounded very rough. put truck in reverse and took off and when stopping at a red light the rpms would move on their own, car starts bouncing, motor is rattling, and sometimes stalls out. i have to put the truck in neutral at every light for it to not rock back and fourth. next day check engine light came out, readings indicated it was the throttle sensor body and the solenoids. i replaced all of these and truck is still running the same, and check engine light is still on. after doing research i have read well over 50 of the same complaint of these vehicles doing the same thing! we need help!
Motor on 2011 chevy equinox blew up. dealer stated that when they pulled the oil pan they found piston, rod and rings. quoted it would be >$9,000 to repair for the motor, gaskets and cat. convertor. asked if this would be covered under warranty. stated it wasn't. i questioned about the pistons being replaced last year. he stated that it was 1.5yr and 27,000 miles ago. he said that there was no coverage. i asked why would these go bag with only 27,000 miles on the repair on only 116,000 miles on the vehicle. he said due to oil. the dealer has completed all oil changes the last 2-3 years as least after starting to have all the issues with oil consumption and other problems. all oil changes have been completed based on oil usage prompted by car. it seems that the issue is caused by the oil consumption and has just taken time for the rods/crank to give way. chevy should issue recall for replacement of whole engine not just the pistons. if pistons are faulty due to lack of oil there are more issues underlying.
My 2011 equinox has experienced multiple problems since we purchased it beginning with the oil life monitoring system, which gm acknowledged, through a dangerous failure of the stabilitrak system in 2014 while in motion on multiple occasions (posted to nhsta), resulting in an engine rebuild in 2016, which gm took responsibility for. unfortunately, the initial problems occurred beyond the lemon car limit in our state and continue today. in september 2017 i brought the vehicle to a chevy dealer after noticing significant exhaust fumes in the cabin particularly while stationary during start up. it was diagnosed with a cracked manifold. the manifold had already been replaced in january of 2016 as part of an engine rebuild at gm's expense. this would therefore be the third manifold in this vehicle in only six years. both the dealer and i filed with gm customer care to request coverage for the manifold replacement. i have not yet heard back but remain hopeful that gm will once again step up and take responsibility.
Reduced engine power /stabili trak light comes on when my vehicle is idle or stopped at a light . it sometimes shuts off but cranks back up while im sitting at a light. usually when on driving on 95 the light doesnt come on except for this morning the light came on while i was on 95 when i was under 60 miles i had to pull over for a few minutes so the indication light goes off, my car will eventually loose power if the light is on and i try to try it .. if the light is off i can drive so i have to turn car off and sit for awhile before i can resume driving.
#43180: voluntary product emission recall ' high pressure fuel pump ' (sep 30, 2016) car stalls after idling when pulling out of parking lot or in a slow start up or transitioning from reverse to drive. causing the vehicle to lose power and maneuverability. the engine mounted high pressure fuel pump in these vehicles may develop excessive wear on the plunger piston shaft and shaft seal. if this happens fuel can leak into the engine oil crankcase and result in the engine running rough and illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp. the issue has been ongoing for past several years.
Purchased 2011 equinox new in august 2011 and all maintenance has been performed either on time or ahead of schedule. first incident occurred while driving at approximately 45 mph - equinox shuddered and stalled out. restarted and had it checked at dealer but no engine codes could be found. about six weeks later on august 30th car cut out at a red light, restarted - car cut out when i slowed to make a turn, restarted - car cut out when i was backing into a parking spot. called and got an appointment at the dealership. received a call from the mechanic on august 31st telling us that the timing chain needs to be replaced at a cost of $1600.00. my 2011 chevrolet equinox only has 52000 miles on it, shame on you gm - a timing chain should not need to be replaced at such low mileage and we should not have to pay since you are aware of the issue with these timing chains.
Dealer looked at it, it uses oil they say there is an issue with stretched timing chains and piston rings, which company has admitted there is a problem with. branded title is stopping the fixing of problem. only issue to make title branded was bumper and ac unit issues(had to do with the insurance company in the state it happened in). there wasn't any damage to engine / motor. gm will not stand behind there product like they claim. they already issued this policy #15285, they should honor the fix!! - regardless! vehicle is 2011 with only 67,000 miles. called gm cus. support, as told by dealer, they couldn't help. report # 8-3169085035
Engine balance chain wears and stretches, when this happens it would cause the chain to break and causing further engine damage.
Less than 60,000 miles and it needs a new engine. engine light came on and power was reduced. car idles very rough, and somewhat loud. i liken it to a school bus. luckily i was less than 5 miles from home and did arrive safely. car was looked at by two different mechanic shops and both have the same diagnosis: timing belt/chain jumped and now needs a new engine.
This vehicle stalled in traffic. after 3 stalls the check engine light came on. the trouble was the timing chain after only 50k miles. cost was $1680. i feel this was dangerous and i should not have been charged.
The timing chain on our equinox broke and damaged the engine. gm says our vin is not covered under the nhtsa reference #10053269 and tsb reference #sb-12313. our shop said the damage is exactly what is covered under those documents, but no protection due to vin outside of range. the vehicle started showing problems with the check engine light on and the stabilitrak system error. parked the vehicle and turned it off. when tried to start again, the vehicle did nothing. had towed to repair shop for damage assessment.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that there was excessive oil consumption and the oil level warning indicator failed to illuminate. the contact stated that there were no leaks or other evidence of an oil leak. the contact also stated that there was no smoke coming from the tailpipe. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was not available.
Rough/loud idle with metal shavings in oil. sometimes rough start up.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving with the air conditioning activated, fumes entered the vehicle. additionally, there was an abnormal knocking noise present. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the manifold was cracked. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified and did not offer assistance. the failure mileage was 67,382.
Hello, the vehicle is under 60,000 miles. i received a recall notice for the malfunction light. after diagnosis, it was reported the car burned oil and caused oil sludge. many reports are needed to be replaced, including the pistons and rings. the cost of the job is between $4500 - 6000. gm will not repair the car under the bulletin, 15285c. apparently, the car vin is covered; however, gm will not repair because i can't proof changing oil every 5,000 miles. i do have service provider receipts dating back to 2012. i couldn't proof changing the oil myself. i have completed this tasks in addition to the service shop. gm reported the car to burn oil excessively at 2,000 miles. i wasn't aware of this until 2016, five years after time of purchase. i'm disappointed with gm not backing their product. the car has the following issues due to this recall. -lunges at idle -stops at idle -sounds like a ticking time bomb i have already invested $1200 in the engine fixing the timing chain and water pump. attached is a conversation saved with gm support. thanks, chad
2011 chevrolet equinox. consumer writes in regards to defective timing chain. *ld the consumer stated the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. *js
Car shut off while driving, would not restart. timing chain broke causing engine damage. vehicle was at dealer in nov and had timing chain checked. dealer reported there to be no issues with timing chain.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact could not start the vehicle and the engine indicator was illuminated. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle felt as if it were reversing when the vehicle was engaged in drive. the vehicle was taken to jim browne chevrolet tampa bay (11300 n florida ave, tampa, fl 33612, (888) 366-5458) where the contact was informed that the fuel was burnt out and the circuit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,253.
I received a recall notice for excess oil consumption. i surpass parimeters for repair. dealer insists that i keep going in for testing well beyond what chevy has set as the standard. chevy is not providing results. vehicle is still not fixed. vehicle whines and has loss of power. first time it happened i ,thankful, was on a quiet residential street. the recall states oil consumption of a quart or more at 2000 miles. i have been going in every 1000 miles. i have attached a copy of the dealer record of oil levels. i am going on the 4000 mile mark with no fix by chevy in future. they don't want to fix.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate and the power reduce warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was unable to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic. it was diagnosed that both timing chains failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in the batch of other vins being recalled. the failure mileage was approximately 102,500.
This morning (04/20/2017), while driving, the car stalled out every time i came to a complete stop at a traffic light, or when i slowed down to turn, the engine had a very rough feel with lots of vibration and then stalled.
Was driving at 25mph when service stabile track light came on, within 5 seconds engine powering down light came on, couldn't restart vehicle , vehicle was towed to chevy dealer where diagnosis of timing chain slipping or breaking was discovered. at first dealer wanted $8800 for engine ,then $6700, then settled on $5400. original engine had 92,000 miles when this occurred. engine had regular oil changes from oil change shops. my concern is that if i was driving 60 mph or higher and engine completely shut down on a busy highway that fast wouldn't that potentially be a cause of a major multiple car collision with severe injuries or even fatalities? i think the dealership tried to help as much as they could but gm as a whole could have done better monetarily in helping me for a well documented problem. and as stated , shouldn't this be a recall?

Engine stalls while slowing or after coming to a stop. restarts once placed into neutral.
Safety concerns galore with this model year, which is well documented on the internet. oil consumption issue, transmission needed to be replaced and car stalling issuing since i have owned vehicle. driving on highway and car completely lost power due to the oil consumption issue with entire family in car, very dangerous. new engine problem caused car to stall in road as well. there are systemic problems that gm doesn't want to acknowledge and it has been extremely frustrating to own vehicle. someone is going to get seriously injured during this car. called and shared safety concern with gm and dealership several times.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 65 mph, an abnormal noise was heard coming from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to h & k chevy buick (200 s main st, continental, oh 45831) where the oil was checked. the technician diagnosed that the motor was losing oil and the chains and pistons needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not covered due to a branded title. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.
Exhaust manifold develops chronic crack possibly due to thermal stress gradient near a injection port. another contributing factor the manifold cracking may be that the engine mount, according to the repair technicians, are prone to quick deterioration than what they consider normal. the engine flops around during torque reactions, putting stress on the connected exhaust system. besides the cracked manifold, two engine mounts were found in poor condition. this crack does not produce a significant audible exhaust leak sound and therefore goes unnoticed. the exhaust manifold is also hidden from view. the crack is widest when cold, therefore letting the most toxic carbon monoxide concentration enter the vehicle, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning of the occupants. this is my wife's car. she had been experiencing severe headaches and had made a doctors appoint. i suspected that our wood stove or gas range may have been the culprit, and installed a co monitor in the kitchen. we figured it was either co poisoning or a terminal brain tumor. we identified the symptom but not the cause. we thank the nhtsa for their recall of the equinox fuel pump. it was during this recall that the gm technician identified the cracked exhaust manifold. so the fuel pump recall essentially saved my wife from ongoing low level co poisoning. regards. I purchased this car in 2014 with approx. 80,000 miles on it but was told by the sales associate that this was a great car and a great deal. this car has been nothing but problems. the car has a ticking noise and sounds like a diesel but everytime i took it in to chevy they told me this is the way chevy cars sound and that nothing was wrong with it. finally my engine light turns on and the car will no longer turn on so i have to get it towed and they tell me the intake cam actuator solenoids went out so they replaced it. then i continue to hear the ticking noise and the car still runs rough and loud but again they tell me nothing is wrong with the car. once again the engine light comes on and i have to get towed back into town over two hours away for them to tell me the tranmission needs to be replaced. i contacted gm and was told this is what happens when you buy a used car. how rude! now i am no longer under the extended warranty and my car is back at chevy. they want me to pay for 4 hours of labor to take apart my engine so they can tell me what exactly is wrong with my car but did mention a problem with the timing chain. are they crazy? these cars are a complete joke. i can not believe that gm would not recall these cars with the extensive issues that so many people are having with them. i mean seriously they should back up their products so people will continue to buy them. if you ask me im sure this car has a problem with the oil consumption which was why i heard the ticking noise and is why the car sounded so loud and heavy like a diesel. they not these cars have a major engine issue but do nothing about it. i still have several years left to pay off this car and am completely upside down. all i want is for gm to pay off this car so i can take my services elsewhere. drove a honda with over 200,000 miles before it gave me any type of problems. very disappointed.
Comments: i am a chevy owner of a 2011 equinox and not happy about having to pay for something that should be a recall. the timing chain is held on by a small bolt which came loose and belt broke and busted a head and all my rocker arms. this screw up my repair man said is because it was designed wrong and says once it is done there is no clue when it could happen again in the future. i have read about this happening to various drivers and they as well as me being told your vin number is not in the recall. i want to know why it is not and what is going to be done about this. the repair bill is between $2500 and $3000 and i also read that it is usually out of warranty when it happens. i am so mad at gm at the moment and thinking about going with another company after i sell this one. [xxx] vin #[xxx] 111,000 miles towing $200 labor and repair $3800 the timing chain guide bolt is so small i am surprised it lasted as long as it did. as much as i have read on recalls of this happening i would like to be reimbursed by gm i was driving to work and it died about two blocks from my job. i started it back up and started down the road and it would only let me go 45 mph and traction control icon came on and then where speed is it had a ! engine power is reduced. i limped into work and parked it going 20 mph. i do have pictures of the bolt and my dash. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tr
Returned to hubler chevy for strange noise at a cold start. rough idle. already a bulletin for balancing chain. balance chain replaced per extended warranty. received a call that the timing chain needs replaced $198. not on a bulletin. also, now doing engine oil consumption test because oil was low as well as engine coolant was low. after doing research at home, thousands of 2.4l engines for equinox are having to pay for bad timing chain when they have balancing chain replaced. most of these complaints are coming at the 30,000 mile mark on the odometer. it seems to me that nhtsa should look into why the timing chain issue is not addressed when replacing the balancing chain? if the timing chain stretches or breaks it will blow up the engine (safety issue). my vehicle just turned 29,0000 miles. numerous other complaints involve all the nhtsa bulletins and ultimately, these people are receiving new replacement engines. if this is the case why won't gm issue a recall and replace these engines with the new improved 2013-2014 2.4l engines. my time is valuable and each repair will cost me a days worth of pay. if these problems are now showing up. let's end games and replace the engine now. this is very wide spread problem, gm needs to own it and replace the entire engine instead of all these band aid fixes. *tr
The 2011 2.4 l engine equinox is under recall, except for mine. i own a 2011 2.4 l engine equinox that has every problem as the one that is being recalled. gm is telling me that there are no defective parts on my car, even though my car has been stalling while driving, while turning, while stopping. my car has everything wrong with it that is listed on the recall. the pvc system, water in the air box. our mechanic took out 1/2 cup of water out of the air box yesterday. in addition, the car consumes mass amounts of oil. this vehicle will give you no warning and then just stall out. last year, my car stalled while driving and then a reduced engine power light came on. i ended up having to replace the throttle body at not even 90,000 miles. this car poses a threat to the person driving as well to any other car that may be near it as there is no warning given that stalling may occur. no check engine lights come either. no low oil lights. nothing. i took my car in yesterday because it stalled 7 times on my route to work. my mechanic was able to diagnose the problem and found the problems with the 2011 equinoxes. i have been turning and just had my car shut off, i have pushed the gas pedal and had nothing happen. i have had my car stall out to check the oil and find no oil on the dipstick. i have stopped for traffic and my car will just shut off. gm has told us on more than one occasion there are no recalls on my car. just other 2011 2.4 l engine equinoxes reporting the same problem. *tr
In 15 degree weather car running rough, then without notice while driving 70 mph on highway car goes to 50% power and barely avoiding getting rear ended i was able to maneuver to side of highway where engine stalled out. was able to start engine again but 50% power indication remained car had to be towed to dealer. tech indicated the pcv had clogged causing rear seal to fail and then loss of oil caused timing chain to loosen and then engine failure. $2728.38 later for timing chain new seals and rod plus bolts. special coverage exists for this exact failure but was told that my vin does not match so bulletin no: 14882 does not apply currently. i do read others with same complaint.. car only has 67k and have had issues with sensors and already had timing chain replaced at 34k . so approx 30k more am i do for another major failure? not safe to drive when on highway and car stalls out without warning and really pcv valve issue causes seal to leak out oil when 90% oil life remaining ... not safe and mine and others with excluded vins need to get covered and refunded in full for the failures related to these pcv valves and excessive engine oil consumption. *tr
Check engine light stays on, car shuts off while driving.
I've not had any complaints about my 2011 chevy equinox until friday when it just wouldn't start. the dealership said the timing chain slipped off and bent valves and now expect me to buy a brand new $9000.00 engine. i looked up recalls and there is one for this exact issue for my model of vehicle but the dealership says it's vin specific and my vin doesn't count for the recall. this needs to be looked into to see if the recall needs to expand out and include more vehicles. *tr
