Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Pulled onto a main highway, traveling at traffic speed when transmission failure left us in the middle of the road. had to be pushed off the highway, and then towed to a garage, where told transmission failure is common with these cars. repair cost of 4100$

While accelerating on frwy ramp, sudden catastrophic transmission failure, i got to the shoulder, had the car towed to my regular repair garage, he had seen this before, a plate inside the transmission shatters with no warning, had car towed to transmission shop, they diagnosed the same thing, said they have repaired 4 to 5 every year and it's a flaw with these transmissions. they completely rebuilt the transmission and showed me the broken parts. cost was $3400.00. called the chevy dealer for reimbursement and they deny any design or manufacturing defects and refused to do anything. i think you should investigate these transmissions for early failures due to a design or manufacturing defect and make chevy extend the warranties on them. my car had only 52000 miles on it and should not have this failure. i was lucky to get to those shoulder safely. if i can provide any additional information, please contact me. also, please inform me of your investigation.

Fuel pump/ low fuel issues fuel pump failing, which in part leaks fuel into the engine. running error codes. low engine power light displayed on dash followed by reduce power. dealership advises it's a 900 charge. certain 2011 equinox models fall under the product emission recall 43180 high pressure fuel recall. however i am being advised mine does not although issue appears to be consistent with recall at first glance.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. when the contact attempted to accelerate the vehicle, it felt as if the vehicle were slipping. the contact parked and noticed transmission oil underneath the vehicle. the contact called a certified mechanic who diagnosed that there was a leak coming from the transfer case, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the contact stated that the failure was related to manufacturer communication number: 10043933 (engine and engine cooling, power train). the approximate failure mileage was 86,870.

A high pitched whining sound was noted while shifting through 2nd gear. noted the next day the same whining sound while shifting through 2nd gear also began while shifting from park into reverse neutral and drive. noted on the 3rd day all of the above in addition to the vehicle slipping gears and while in drive began to read as if it were in neutral. upon inspection by a local dealer it was determined that the transmission was no longer functional. d mileage for the 2011 chevrolet equinox at that point was 109000 miles. it has since costed approximately $3000 to replace the transmission of which none was covered by any warranty either dealer or manufacturer.

Excessive oil consumption: have had to completely refill 4qts of oil every 17-20 days, no oil stains in parking areas or oil burning smell when driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while making a left turn, the vehicle lost acceleration. the contact had to depress the accelerator pedal four times before the vehicle accelerated. in addition, when making a right turn, the vehicle failed to accelerate. however, when driving straight ahead, the vehicle accelerated normally. the contact coasted the vehicle into a parking lot and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to drive normally, but only when driven straight ahead. the vehicle was taken to conklin chevrolet newton (located at 1500 se 3rd st, newton, ks 67114, (316) 842-4137) and the failure was duplicated. the dealer ordered a solenoid pack and replaced the old one; however, the failure recurred. the dealer test drove the vehicle and it failed to accelerate even when driving straight ahead. the vehicle was later towed to conklin cars buick gmc hutchinson (located at 1400 e 11th ave, hutchinson, ks 37501, (620) 708-4102) where it was diagnosed that the wave plate exploded and sent metal pieces inside the metal case, which damaged the transmission. the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided case number: 9-5288717276. the approximate failure mileage was 91,754.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the transmission gears failed to remain engaged. the gear slipped while the vehicle was in drive. consumer manage to park the vehicle in a shopping center parking lot and at that time would not engage in either reverse or drive settings. car was towed to uebelhor and sons chevrolet (972 wernsing rd, jasper, in 47546, (812) 482-2222) diagnosed and replaced the transmission assembly. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 83,000. *tt*jb

The transmission just went out driving down the road, could not move it, could have been very dangerous if on a busy highway. driving at regular speed, just sounded like it shifted to park, no warning at all. was forced to replace transmission at $5000.

My 2011 chevy equinox was not picking up speed, and would shut off when i stopped for more than 30 seconds. the engine also sounded very loud when in park. i had a diagnostic done at the dealership and it was determined that the timing chain needed to be replaced. my car had been in the shop two months prior for replacement of the camshaft position sensor. my car currently has 102,000 miles. the dealership said that metal shavings were also found in my oil. i tried driving my car after the diagnostic and the "reduced engine power" indicator came on, causing me to have to pull over on the highway and be towed. i contacted gm regarding a recall and was informed that the particular model of my vehicle was not included in the recall and since my warranty had expired there was nothing they could do. i have read reports of my 2011 equinox owners who have had similar issues.

I am experiencing the same problems as the ones that are recalled for oil issues. however my vin number wasn't listed. my pcv valve is stuck. possible issue with inside the intake crank case and with that i don't want a blow out. losing power and using a lot of oil. i have the 2011 chevy equinox lt purchased less than 2 years ago.

The car has began using ridiculous amounts of oil, i have to put a quart of oil in every couple of weeks, the other issue is the transmission has started having issues it literally just passed the 100k mileage mark and this started, as if it was timed by the warranty, i see tons of people with this issue

My vehicle is experiencing the problem listed in a recall that was issued on 9/13/11. the bulletin number is 11195b. in speaking to my local dealership, they tell me my vehicle was not included in the recall. i'm writing to see if this was an oversight or if any other owners of the vehicles listed in this recall have indicated they're having similar problems.

I own 2011 chevy equinox. only has 80,000 miles. first occurrence started as i was driving on the freeway and the vehicle stalled on me couple of times as i was driving or at stop sign. malfunction engine sensor light turned on. took it to two different people to look at it for an estimate, since taking it to the dealership will cost an arm and a leg, both said timing chain problem and i would need to get a new motor! also excessive oil consumption yet no sensor turns on. checked to see if there were any recalls but only see hundreds of complaints with the same problem!

Pcv system freezes causing the low power mode (limp mode) and check engine light to come on. its a known issue, and gm covered it on a few cars. next time i may be in heavy traffic.

Sitting idle at stop light, engined revved up, turned into parking lot, lost reverse. pushed out of parking space, able to drive forward, but at low mph, began knocking and rattling, loss of power. pulled into 2nd parking lot, turned car off. waited 20 min, able to shift to reverse and drive about 10 min. sitting idle once again, rpms revved up again, loss of power. drove very slow until at a safe location, transmission light finally came on. began online research to land here. called mechanic friend, said known fact with 3-5-r wave plate failure 103,000 miles. bought new dec 2010

Transmission failed at 50,000 miles. i was driving 25 mph down a city street. of course, i'm out of warranty because of years, and, gm will not consider giving any assistance, even though this is a common problem with the 2011 equinoxes. an employee at a local dealership said the transmission in the equinox like mine is garbage. i purchased the car new in march, 2011, and in february 2015 at 26,000 the a/c compressor went out, and i had to pay for that repair.

I was driving my 2011 chevy equinox i just purchased aug 5,2018 while driving the engine light came on i went to turn in the parking lot at the vehicle just completely shut down i had try coasting into a space. vehicle was towed to a service center only to learn this is a known issue with g mm c/chevrolet. unfortunately gmc is turning a deaf ear to this very dangerous situation. i had just gotten off a major interstate i could have been killed and gma is clearly aware of this problem and refusing to do a recall i'm praying noone gets killed before their hand is forced to make their product safe for the consumer.

I've had this vehicle for 10 months and it's been in the shop more than anything. it's already on its second engine and that was september 14th, now october 23rd it is now needing a transmission. this doesn't include the unbelievable amount of oil changes and tune ups. i've stalled in reverse and drive. the car died out while driving and is extremely loud at times. all i have for documents are my receipts. i'm disabled with children and when i thought we were buying a car we bought a lot of problems instead. constantly trying to still find rides to dr appts and such. i'm very disappointed that a recall hasn't been done yet, after the all the complaints on said vehicle.

While driving car trembled a little a minute or so before it seemingly lost power, no accelerstion, steering wheel locked. lights remained on dash but no power. no warning lights. nothing. thankfully was able to safely stop near side of the road and turned thebkey and car started like nothing happened. thankful i was exiting a parking lot, and wasnt on the highway like i was just a few hours prior. i couldve been killed

I have a 2011 chevy equinox that just randomly had the transmission go out in it. i had taken it to a dealership not even 2 weeks ago and they were supposed to do a full vehicle fluid top off and full oil change. never have i had any issues with my vehicle prior to this and it only has 90k miles on it.

The transmission went out in the vehicle with only 85,xxx miles on it. costing almost $3,000 to fix it.

Going down the road the ac started blowing hot air so we have no air in this suv not fair and it started to jerk like it was losing power scary

Vehicle has been meticulously maintained. engine started to stall while driving, then would not start. warning lights did not appear until after the vehicle would not start. said engine underpowered. had it towed to mechanic, who found there was no oil in the engine, even though no lights came on and we checked the oil 3 days earlier. had the car towed to the dealer. the dealer said the engine needed to be replaced, but repairs should be covered under a special coverage warranty issued by gm. gm denied coverage with no explanation sent to me. i called customer service to file an appeal, and was given a file number and told someone would contact me within 2 business days. despite almost daily follow up calls by me for a month no one has called me back. each time i am told it the case is being handled by a senior advisor and that the operator was not able to contact them and they would call me back. i asked for the case to be escalated to a supervisor, and after 4 times was told it had been, but when i called back to see why no one had called me back was told that the senior advisor was still assigned to the case. this is a very serious safety issue, with the engine stalling while still in motion, with no warning, and is caused by a known manufacturer's defect and should be part of a recall, not "special coverage".

Recall on the front seat there's a recall in the engine area electrical surges there's a recalled beginning of the cranking up part of the car there are more recalls but i am not for sure of the rest

In the last 6 months we have replaced both the transmission and transfer case, vehicle had less then 150,000 miles on it.

Today i added my name to the class action lawsuit, case no. 3:17-cv-5337 that was filed on 9/14/17 in the northern district of california against gm regarding my 2011 chevrolet equinox. if you're affected, add your name as well as file a complaint with the federal trade commission. feb2017, i purchased said auto with 69,684 miles in good condition. on my way to work while at a red light the suv shut off without warning. being unable to restart the suv, it was towed on may 25, 2018 to my mechanic (cb island, 589 union ave, westbury, ny) to find that there were damaged valves, a broken timing chain, and a blown engine at 93,675 miles. this mileage is well under gm's special coverage adjustment mileage of 120k. the cause of the damage to the motor was lack of oil in the engine. being diligent in getting oil changes, there was no indication that the oil was low in the car. gm refused to honor the warranty though they knew of the defect on these engines. there are many almost identical mechanical issues over multiple years for the chevy equinox. this is not just a few of us that have experienced this engine failure, but enough to have a class action initiated. having a $16k loan remaining, i have no other choice but to repair the engine. the government (which was assisted gm out of bankruptcy) needs to hold gm accountable by forcing them to take action by recalling all affected models, and to reimburse those who have already made the repairs in addition to having gm inspect the repaired engines to ensure no future problems to pre-empt the fatalities that will eventually begin to add up.

Car stalled out while stopped at a stop light. was able to restart and drive home. was scheduled for an oil change the next day, went to drive the car and made it three houses down before it stalled out while driving. engine light came on and would not start back up. had it towed to a repair shop and they said it jumped time, and the timing chain broke and made a mess of the engine. engine needs to be replaced. failed at 73k miles. bought the car certified used at 36k two years ago and have had it serviced regularly. don't have money for repairs and chevy dealer won't fix....

2011 equinox 2lt fwd with less than 70,000 miles needs an entire new transmission. no hard driving. no towing. regular use to and from work. city and highway driving only. one morning simply refused to go into drive, even though reverse works fine. absolutely ridiculous. cannot be an isolated incident.

Wiper blade motor stopped working in a heavy downpour. i was on a road i know so was able to pull off safely. if i didn't know this road i am positive i would have had an accident. the manifold was changed in 2013. today is march 22, 2018. last week i had the manifold changed again. cracked again. there were fumes coming into the passenger area. the car is in the repair garage again because the fumes are even worse. the car has always had a loud ticking sound. it uses a lot of oil. i complained to the dealer before the warranty ran out. they did an oil consumption test and said the oil use was within normal range. how can this be normal range when i put a couple quarts of oil every 200 miles. this car is junk.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start and an abnormal clicking noise was heard. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to 1ownercar (410 w oak ln, glenolden, pa 19036, (610) 915-3417) where it was diagnosed that the battery was dead. the contact mentioned that the alternator, starter, and battery were replaced, but the failure recurred and could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 97,000.

Just replaced the transmission at 135,000. in reading online, seems to be a common problem with this year/make.

Engine failed due to excessive oil consumption. i was in the process of working through an oil consumption test with the dealership but was unable to finish. my car failed thankfully while it was stationary in my driveway. it is my understanding that this failure could have happened at any time even with my kids in the car or on the highway. i've been told that due to the vehicle consuming excessive oil between regular oil changes it results in issues with the timing chain which eventually lead to engine issues and ultimately failure. there is currently a technical service bulletin released by gm for the known issue but no information was even sent to me about the issue so that i could be made aware of it and monitor the problem.

Stabilitrak light comes on then engine power reduced and vehicle dropped from 65 to 25 mph instantly driving on highway

I had my family in the equinox and had to coast to the side of the road on a busy highway at night. i called aaa to have the car towed to a repair shop by the house. they determined the transmission was bad and either needed a new one or have the computer re-flashed. the only people who can re-flash a transmission module computer is a dealership. by now, i also called general motors and they advised me to take it to a dealership. i had it towed again for a second time to the dealership. they said the transmission was bad and needed a new one. i started the repair process soon after. i wanted general motors to pay for the repairs because i bought my car brand new and it had 88,000 miles on it. gm did not pay for the repairs and i got stuck with a $3800 bill in repairs and labor.

Gm recall 11195a - poor drivability/ safety/ emissions recall for camshaft position actuator solenoids. my 2.4l 2011 equinox (approx. 47,000 at purchase 11/16 & 71,000 current) is now at days chevrolet in acworth ga. due to 1) shutting off multiple times while driving, 2) stalling at idle (fwd & rev). i initially visited days on 12/22/17 to start an oil consumption test related to 15285c, as my car presented with stalling/hesitation/surging and loss of 3 qts oil. as of today (1/3/18), i returned to days when it shut off while driving again. the dealership's diagnosis is intake & exhaust camshaft solenoid failure. i suspected this based on code p0010 recorded by my diagnostic unit. so i got a rental, left my car for the camshaft repairs, and researched recalls. the 2011 2.4l has many known engine/powertrain/safety issues. lo and behold, i found the recall on the camshaft diagnosis. it reads exact to what i'm experiencing. my next step was contacting days to ask why i'm being charged for a recalled repair. i was informed that they were unaware of recall 11195a. my service advisor, rob, looked up the recall and discovered that there is in fact a recall for the exact diagnosis, yet could not explain why my vin is not included. he advised that the car is exhibiting exactly what the recall is issued for and that it's clearly a known safety issue, yet gm will not cover my repair because "the vin is not included". i very much believe this is gm's responsibility and gm should cover the repair at no cost because it's a result of their faulty engineering. i contacted gm customer service tonight and was told there's nothing gm can do. i strongly disagree. gm can do the right thing. i requested a case be opened and was given #83734190593 after pressing (paul) for one. in the end. gm was of no help and my vin is still in limbo, so i'm filing my complaint here.

Transmission went out

When seating in the driver seat turn on the car my air bag warren come on even when i turning the wheel left or right it come on and i did get warrant card and i call a chevy dealer in quincy fla and they said they did it still it keep popping up let talk about that oil that i keep losing with in 4week bout the oil when i get a oil charge when in a 3 week checking my cage and checking my oil stick now i know what the cage on the oil stick level should be i have a uncle that works for chevrolet dealer in upper state that show me what to look for now this don't make sense so

I was driving on a city road and the car jerked and would not shift out of first gear. i tried to push it, but it would not go. i slowed down to a stop light and my car would not go. once i managed to get it into a parking lot, all gears totally locked up and i could not even get it in neutral. the chevy dealership says i need a new transmission. i only have 76k miles on this one before it went up.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while operating the vehicle, an audible ticking noise was present from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer classic chevrolet (6877 center st, mentor, oh (440-602-6020) where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft rear oil seal was blown due to moisture in the pcv. the contact was informed that the failure occurred as a result of driving in extremely low weather temperatures for extended periods. the vehicle was not yet repaired. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 96,500. *tt *tr

Extreme hard down shift between 35-45 mph. dealer says "transmission is fried" "plates are charred". this is a very common problem with this particular car. it has had already 2-3 recalls & this transmission is going to kill someone. i contacted general motors & they will not make this a recall & they will not help pay for repair although they have helped others. this problem is not due to driver error but due to failure of the part. dealer is charging an arm/leg to fix it. general motors clearly does not care.

I have a 2011 equinox it's got 146,000 miles . i am faithful with oil changes and last week when i went to get it changed i was told my engine had no oil. my oil light never came on, my check engine light had just turned on the day prior. i was told there wasn't any leaks. so after some research i find there is a oil consumption problem, however since my miles are i've 120,000 i don't qualify for the repair. this is not right! my car could have burnt up because my light never indicated a problem and gm never notified me of he issues!

Stalling out while sitting in drive at red light. got up for work and turned truck on, sounded very rough. put truck in reverse and took off and when stopping at a red light the rpms would move on their own, car starts bouncing, motor is rattling, and sometimes stalls out. i have to put the truck in neutral at every light for it to not rock back and fourth. next day check engine light came out, readings indicated it was the throttle sensor body and the solenoids. i replaced all of these and truck is still running the same, and check engine light is still on. after doing research i have read well over 50 of the same complaint of these vehicles doing the same thing! we need help!

After driving a couple of hours on freeway i turned onto gratiot ave, suddenly the vehicle lost forward motion power. i was very concerned because i had a 2 month old infant in the vehicle. the vehicle also lost reverse. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership and the diagnosis was that the 3rd/5th/reverse clutch wave plate had failed and i would need a replacement transmission. i informed the dealership that these clutch wave plates have high failure rates going back to 2007 and gm should repair the vehicle at their cost. i am awaiting their decision. only 74,000 miles on vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. on several occasions, while the vehicle was idling or being driven at a low speed, the vehicle stalled. the contact had to place the vehicle in park in order for it to restart. while the brake pedal was depressed, the steering wheel locked and the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact notified the dealer (jim trenary chevrolet, 501 auto mall dr, o'fallon, mo 63368 (636) 946-6300) where an appointment was made. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vin was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was 79,621.

I was driving home after work. the transmission didn't shift when it should have, then jerked into gear, did it again then the check engine light came on. i was able to pull over safely and then had it towed to my nearest chevrolet dealership.

Hello, the vehicle is under 60,000 miles. i received a recall notice for the malfunction light. after diagnosis, it was reported the car burned oil and caused oil sludge. many reports are needed to be replaced, including the pistons and rings. the cost of the job is between $4500 - 6000. gm will not repair the car under the bulletin, 15285c. apparently, the car vin is covered; however, gm will not repair because i can't proof changing oil every 5,000 miles. i do have service provider receipts dating back to 2012. i couldn't proof changing the oil myself. i have completed this tasks in addition to the service shop. gm reported the car to burn oil excessively at 2,000 miles. i wasn't aware of this until 2016, five years after time of purchase. i'm disappointed with gm not backing their product. the car has the following issues due to this recall. -lunges at idle -stops at idle -sounds like a ticking time bomb i have already invested $1200 in the engine fixing the timing chain and water pump. attached is a conversation saved with gm support. thanks, chad

Safety concerns galore with this model year, which is well documented on the internet. oil consumption issue, transmission needed to be replaced and car stalling issuing since i have owned vehicle. driving on highway and car completely lost power due to the oil consumption issue with entire family in car, very dangerous. new engine problem caused car to stall in road as well. there are systemic problems that gm doesn't want to acknowledge and it has been extremely frustrating to own vehicle. someone is going to get seriously injured during this car. called and shared safety concern with gm and dealership several times.

Returned to hubler chevy for strange noise at a cold start. rough idle. already a bulletin for balancing chain. balance chain replaced per extended warranty. received a call that the timing chain needs replaced $198. not on a bulletin. also, now doing engine oil consumption test because oil was low as well as engine coolant was low. after doing research at home, thousands of 2.4l engines for equinox are having to pay for bad timing chain when they have balancing chain replaced. most of these complaints are coming at the 30,000 mile mark on the odometer. it seems to me that nhtsa should look into why the timing chain issue is not addressed when replacing the balancing chain? if the timing chain stretches or breaks it will blow up the engine (safety issue). my vehicle just turned 29,0000 miles. numerous other complaints involve all the nhtsa bulletins and ultimately, these people are receiving new replacement engines. if this is the case why won't gm issue a recall and replace these engines with the new improved 2013-2014 2.4l engines. my time is valuable and each repair will cost me a days worth of pay. if these problems are now showing up. let's end games and replace the engine now. this is very wide spread problem, gm needs to own it and replace the entire engine instead of all these band aid fixes. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet equinox. while attempting to merge into traffic, the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was approximately 36,000. the vin was not available.
