On average, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 55 762 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

From 30 mar 18 to 30 apr 18, every time i drove the vehicle, i would loose power steering and stabilitrak after driving about 8 miles. tried shutting the engine off and wait about 3 minutes and system would be back online.

Driving on the highway @ 45 mph, the "service power steering, drive carefully" sign came on. the power steering stopped working and the vehicle was very difficult to steer to the side of the road. i shut off the engine and restarted the problem went away. the next day on the way to the dealer the same thing happened at 55 mph. this tin=me i continued driving to the dealer so they could see the problem. the dealer verified the problem was in the steering gear and would cost $2000.00 to repair. this is a safety problem, listed in a partial recall by gm, which does not include my vin. the nhtsa should be investigating this before something catastrophic happens, perhaps to a family driving down the road.

On 6/26/17, i took my truck to paradise chevrolet in temecula, ca because a few days before my power steering failed while i was driving. my truck was under warranty because it had only 19,968 miles. they said nothing was wrong with the truck so they just recalibrated it. on 3/24/18, the power steering failed again, once on a city street and once on the freeway while driving to paradise chevrolet. today i received a call saying something was wrong with the steering wheel & it will cost me $1250 to fix the problem. my truck has alittle under 30,000 miles.

See complaint number: 11091275 for background. 23 mar 18: on the way to the dealer the truck had no problem with power steering.(oreilly chevrolet in tucson, az) and explained them the situation. the dealer test drove the vehicle and had no loss of ps. vehicle was through the dtcs and found dtc u0420/42; torque sensor not properly learned. dealer did pscm setup & cleared the dtcs. service person stated they had to reboot computer. afterwards, they drove the vehicle & had no malfunctions - $153.24. on way home, had no problems, to include the weekend.

22 mar 18: while driving my colorado lt at 30mph, warning light came on, with the message: 'service power steering (ps), drive with care'. i cleared the message and another message came on: 'service stabilitrak'. i went to work and parked it and 3 hours later, steering was normal. 23 mar 18: on the way to the dealer the truck had no problem with power steering.(o'reilly chevrolet in tucson, az) and explained them the situation. the dealer test drove the vehicle and had no loss of ps. vehicle was through the dtcs and found dtc u0420/42; torque sensor not properly learned. dealer did pscm setup& cleared the dtcs. service person stated they had to reboot computer. afterwards, they drove the vehicle & had no malfunctions - $153.24. on way home, had no problems, to include the weekend. from 26 to 29 mar18, had several instances in which the 'service power steering (ps), drive with care' & 'service stabilitrak' came on with the subsequent loss of ps. on 27 mar 18, i received two emails from onstar stating the following: issue with stabilitrak stability control system in your 2015 chevrolet colorado has been detected. please service your vehicle within 7 days'& 'issue with antilock braking system in your 2015 chevrolet colorado has been detected. please service your vehicle within 7 days'. took back to dealer with copies of above related messages, who stated this would allow to better pinpoint the problem with the vehicle. service manager called later that day stating warranty has expired 2 months ago and that i would be responsible for repairs. he said steering column had to be replaced & would cost around $1,800, but after consultation with factory, they were willing to cover about half the cost and i would be responsible for about $650.said that they would have to order the part ' back order & no idea when the part would arrive.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving various speeds, the power steering malfunctioned. the contact stated that there was a complete loss or power steering assist. sting ray chevrolet in bartow, florida was made aware of the failure and diagnosed that the angle torque sensor needed to be replaced along with a wheel alignment. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was under recall for the steering; however, the manufacturer recall had expired. in addition, the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was 30,000 miles out of bumper to bumper warranty. the failure mileage was 67,000.

Power steering shuts off without warning have to pull over shut off truck restart it happened three times , very dangerous safety hazard taking it to the dealer sherry doesn't know if it's covered under warranty

I was driving on the freeway and a light came on and said service power steering drive carefully. i then pulled over and let the car sit to see if it was a error. nope back on the freeway and it happened again. then shortly after a light came on and said service stable track. i've been reading lots of links with people saying they are having the same problem.

Back in early 2018 prior to my bumper to bumper expiring, i had the check power steering and stabilitrak come on on dic. i took it to dealer but they stated could not find any issues. this keeps happening but everytime i turn truck off and then back on as stated in owner's manual, problem goes away. more recent past week, it has been happenings again but more frequent to which at times, turning off and waiting then turning back on, the problem persists. this problem happens various times (while driving city, highway, as i'm turning vehicle on for first time in the day, while backing up, while parking). i have mentioned and taken in to dealer or other places but no codes are found and problem cannot be duplicated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. the contact stated that the steering wheel failed. while driving approximately 30 to 35 mph, the service power steering indicator illuminated and the "drive with care" service indicator remained illuminated. the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. the contact was able to pull over, restart the engine, and the steering wheel regained normal function. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have a diagnostic test performed. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v054000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

Steering or power assist system stops working making it hard or imposible to steer. this happens at any time, with vehicle stopped or in motion. my vehicle was manufactured 12/14 so it is not included in recall # 16v054000, but nonetheless the malfunction is the same.

While driving the trac control and power steering lights came on the dash immediately followed by a loss of power steering. the vehicle was extremely difficult to turn creating a very serious safety situation. it was pulled over to the side of the road and restarted. the power steering came back on. chevy service says the gear steering box needs replaced at a cost of almost $2000. there is a recall for this same issue but my vehicle is not included because it was built 2 months before the recall date, several others are reporting the same issue on these new trucks coming off the assembly line just prior to the recall date of january 6, 2015. i'm not sure what gm changed that the first few thousand trucks produced in late 2014 are not part of the recall. same issue, very serious safety issue, new truck, and the customer is expected to pay the $2000 to fix it. i wish gm would consider extending the recall to the original 2015 colorado's that first came off the assembly line. it is obviously a problem!

While driving on highway power steering goes out causing loss of control of vehicle. cannot turn vehicle.

I was travelling at 45 mph and power steering fails. truck is very difficult to steer. i stopped vehicle and restarted, power steering now functional. i took in to dealer who told me there was an electrical short and that i would need to purchase new part at cost of $1700.00. hard to accept this cost on a 2 1/2 year old truck. truck has 49000 miles, so not covered in bumper to bumper warranty.

Alert comes on and power steering fails. very dangerous. this happened at 70mph in rush our traffic. stearing is then unresponsive - no power assist. onstar system describes it as "an issue with the stabilitrak stability control system in your 2015 chevrolet colorado crew cab has been detected." alert goes away after turning the car on off. but you cannot do this on a highway at 70mph. fault comes again at random times/speeds etc.

Power assist and stability am system warning comes on while driving called chevrolet to see if a recall but no luck.steering wheel becomes stiff and hard to control i think this is a safety issue and should be fixed for being a real problem and should be addressed accordingly..

My vehicle has the exact same problems as in your recall 16v054000 and chevys recall 15595, but my vehicle was not included in the recall. i have been to a dealer and had this diagnosed. will cost over $600.00 to fix. sometimes upon start up and sometimes when driving down the road a message come up on message center with reference to power steering needing attention and at that time you have no power steering. obviously the scope of the recall was not large enough and did not cover all cars having the problem. what does a person do when they fall into this category. i refuse to believe they are just sol. this happens several times a week. sometimes turning vehicle off and restarting straightens it out, sometimes not.

My colorado has 42k miles and on 5 different occasions i have been driving 45+ mph and suddenly warnings begin popping up on the console, "stabilitrak disabled" "traction control disabled" "power steering disabled, please drive with care" turning the truck off and then back on temporarily fixes the problem but it is continuing to happen and is incredibly dangerous! there is a recall for 2015 colorados for this exact problem; however, gm specified a 2 month manufacturing window where it applies to the recall. gm needs to step up and recall all 2015 colorados for this before someone gets killed.

The power steering goes out without warning, stbilitrak also. car rattles in the front steering area when ging over bumps in the road. there is a recall for 1/15-3/15 build date only which is insane because mine built in 11/14 has the same parts and the same defects. dealer and gm refuse to help. claim there is no fix when they know there is. it is even listed on the chevy and nthsa websites

We purchased a 2015 chevy colorado in march of 2015. mid may 2017 we ran into a huge issue where randomly the power steering goes out. since that day it has been going off randomly, and the only way to try to reset it is it to keep turning the car on and off until it kicks back on-often at the same time it often says stabilitrak disabled. usually this happens when the vehicle is in motion, but sometimes has also been already the case when the car is first turned on. we have brought this to the dealer's/service manager's attention every time we go to the dealer (we have gotten every oil change, service and inspection done at a chevy dealer since the day we purchased the vehicle) and the response we get is that we need to bring the vehicle in while it's "coded". frankly- this is absurd and not at all feasible.

Driving at 65 mph on highway and lost power steering with no warning. as soon as the warning light was on; the power steering was gone. i managed to ease off onto an exit; however, this is extremely dangerous. although many colorados are being recalled for this issue, my colorado is not recalled because the build date is not in the timeframe chevrolet has identified. chevrolet agreed to pay for the diagnostic to identify the problem, but will not pay to correct the problem, even though there are countless complaints for this issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving various speeds, the power steering malfunctioned. the contact stated that the power steering warning system alerted and then the power steering went out. mckenney chevrolet cadillac buick gmc (831 s main st, lowell, nc 28098, 855-757-1635) was contacted and referred the contact to the manufacturer since there was no recall. the manufacturer provided a case number. the dealer and manufacturer would not assist with the cost of replacing the power steering gear. the failure mileage was 60,000.

On 2/9/17, i had the steering recall work performed. on my way home while making a right, steering completely locked. i crossed into the opposite lane until the steering freed up. i drove a few more days without issue but i did notice a knocking sound coming from the front. the following week there were a few times where the steering did not immediately respond. on 2/22/17, i went back to the dealer and they said that they could not duplicate, but they did secure a loose front fog light to fix the knocking. i picked up the trunk and initially did not hear any more knocking; however, the knocking was still there when on rough surfaces. i continued to experience the knocking and subtle issues where the steering did not immediately respond when corning. around march 18th, i again started to experience the locking. on march 20th, it happened approximately 20 times or more. on 3/22/17, i was back at the dealer where they were able to reproduce the issue. i was told that there were no codes in the system and i saw no lights on the dash. this time the performed the following: "33967 steering assist motor binding, high effort 3.20 no dtc, scan data normal, circuit test normal, replaced steering gear, perform epscm set up, perform front end alignment. verify repairs". on 3/23,17, i picked up my truck and it seemed as good as new. even the knocking went away. on 4/2/17, i experienced 2 times back to back in a parking lot where the steering locked and i came close to hitting a parked car. on 4/3/17, on my way to the dealer, it again locked. turning into the dealer parking lot, there was the subtle hesitation. the tech drove it and could not make it happen. i then went with the tech and i could not make it happen in the 15 minutes we were out. at this point, i'm not sure when it will happen again and i feel that this has been and is a safety issue.

Power steering stopped working. makes it very hard to turn. very dangerous! mine started when i started the truck but now i see others have had it go out when they are going down the road. called the dealer the next day and the guy i talked to in the service department acted like this was the first time he had ever heard of this even though the scheduler i talked to first told me others had called with the same issue. now, the next day, i see there is a recall for this. however, my truck is not included because it was built before a certain date. i'm pissed!

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle; however, the failure recurred four times. the vehicle was taken to roy robinson chevrolet (6616 35th ave ne, marysville, wa 98271, phone: (360) 659-6236) where it was diagnosed that the power steering connector failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v054000 (steering). the manufacturer stated that the vin was excluded from the recall. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000. *tt

Powering steering failed while driving (straight) on a city street at approximately 30 mph. several warning lights came on. not drivable except a very short distance. fortunately failure happened very near the chevrolet dealer and i was able to drive it there. this model is subject to a recall (gm recall 15595) however local dealer was totally unprepared for servicing the recall. i had the truck to the dealer by noon on april 1; it is now april 12 and dealer cannot tell me when parts will arrive and/or when the truck will be repaired. neither gm or the dealer has volunteered to pay the cost of the rental car the dealer provided for a fee, despite gm's pledge to remedy the condition "without charge and within a reasonable time."

Driving along and the power steering goes out. has no common time or conditions as to when. has happened on the highway, driveway and city streets. steering is extremely difficult to turn. i have to stop, put it in park and restart. this makes it return to normal. sometimes for a day or a couple of hours, it varies. dealer has tried to download a fix but it's no better. started dec 9 and keeps doing so.

Returning to work after lunch break. power steering fails at about 45 mph. 3rd time that this has happened. took it to dealer the first time and was told problem was solved. turning truck off and on again temporarily resolves the problem. took to dealer again today and was told they need to order more parts. have found many other instances of this truck having similar issues online.

Experienced sudden loss of eps(power steering) after @ 30 minutes of driving: symptoms: sudden loss of power steering alert message: service power steering drive with care stabilitrack and traction control dash lights on backup camera ok but no guide lines message on screen: vehicle guiding lines unavailable code scanner/reader shows no codes. after engine re-start: service stabilitrack message appears for a brief period, again, no codes. power steering will be fine again for a while. problem repeated after another 30 minute driving. again, restart cleared the problem. several recalls for similar problem with gm vehicles: nhtsa campaign's: 14v719000, 14v395000 & 14v153000. nothing for colorado.

I was driving onto an exit ramp and felt the steering get stiff. the informaction screen above the steering wheel flashed yellow lights and the message "service power steering, drive safely". i proceeded to grip the steering wheel harder and slow down till i could safely pullover. the backup camera also stopped working, which makes me think this is an electrical issues since the car has electrical power steering. once i turned the car off and on back to normal but this seems to be affecting other 2015 colorado and gmc canyons. due to the weight and size of this vehicle this issue can cause a major and fatal accident.

I stopped at a stop sign and heard the truck warning chimes and saw a service power steering message and when i tried to move the wheel i couldn't turn it. i put the truck in park and shut it off. waited a few seconds and turned it back on and i had power steering again.was able to get it back to work and called and had it towed back to chevy dealer and get it repaired, (i thought). they said they had to reprogram the power steering control module. it happened again today when my daughter was driving on a town road came around a sharp curve and lost the steering again. she was able to pull over into a driveway and shut it off and when it started back up the power steering was working again.

The power steer in failed as i was driving about 25mph. i drove the car to the dealership. the power steering briefly worked each time the ignition was activated, then would fail minutes later. have been without the vehicle since that day with conflicting explanations . either the dealer received a bad replacement part or the entire steering column requires replacing. this is a very dangerous defect which should be investigated

Was stopped at a red light. warning sound came and instrument cluster mentioned stabilitrak and power steering fault, drive with care. had no power steering for rest of trip to work. had this of happened in traffic and in a turn i could have easily hit a car as it was extremely difficult to turn. turned off vehicle and started back up and everything was fine.

On april 2, 2015, my daughter was pulling out a shopping center in plainfield il when the power steering system failed as she trying to make a right turn, the ip display showed a message to drive with care and that there was a problem with the power steering. i stopped at an auto parts store to purchase some fluid and when restarted the engine, the steering returned to normal. the following morning, i took in to the webb chevrolet in plainfield where they said the power steering rack was defective and the part would not arrive until april 6th or 7th. my daughter panicked when this happened and she could have easily ran into another vehicle in the opposite lane of traffic. three days before i came to illinois to visit my daughter i picked it up from my local colorado for severe engine oil leak repair. *tr

I had a power steering malfunction on three occasions on february 13,16,and 17. all three times it was -10 below zero or more and lost my power steering. my truck is parked in a garage at night ,this happened all three times after being outside for several hours in extremey cold weather. the driver info center displayed (service power steering-- drive with care). after i had driven about 5 miles and shut the truck of and restarted it the power steering worked. at this time it is working ok. i have a second appointment on march 2nd with my dealer to try and fix this issue.
