Problems with 2015 Chevrolet Colorado STEERING

On average, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 55 762 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

While driving the rain the dashboard light came on stating service power steering drive with care and another light came on stating stablelik. this happened on 2-11-20.again on 2-13-20 raining again same lights came on but this time they didn't go out.shut the truck off turn back on no power steering. took the truck to dealer the recall was done at 18000 miles.i paid to have a perform system test done. i was told i need a new rack and pinion steering at a cost of 1800. but gm will pay 900. of the bill. i called gm to cover the whole cost but told me i was out of the time frame. i have 95000 miles on it . it looks like to me that it is a recurring problem that will continue to happen.today is 2-14-20 no rain drove truck 6 times so far no dash lights on and have power steering called the dealer back today and was told it must be the moduler that is sealed in the rack and pinion system

2015 colorado truck lost power steering assist several times. vehicle was very hard to steer and could have resulted in a crash, especially for someone with a weaker upper body. stopping vehicle and restarting cleared the problem for a very short period of time, then it would happen again. general motors said it was out of warranty and would not compensate any of the $2,000.00 put out to repair vehicle..

The power steering would randomly turn off while driving. it would become very difficult to steer the truck, and almost caused several accidents. restarting the vehicle would temporarily bring the steering back to normal. as time went on, this would happen more and more frequently. chevrolet had a recall on a small amount of trucks, but my vin wasn't included in the recall (for reasons that chevrolet wouldnt't disclose to me) so i had to pay $2300 out of pocket for a new steering gear set up. chevrolet should do the right thing and recall or at least offer to fix all 2015 colorados and canyons with this problem. if a younger, or inexperienced drivers runs into a problem where the power steering goes out without warning, someone can get injured or killed. i know i am not the only person that was affected by this. this problem happened in many situations. while on the highway, while in parking lots, while mid turn...it was very scary.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. the contact stated that while driving and attempting to make a right turn, the steering ceased. the contact was able to drive the vehicle to the residence slowly. (george chevrolet located at 17000 lakewood blvd, bellflower, ca 90706 (562) 645-4948) was contacted and an appointment was scheduled to have the vehicle diagnosed. the manufacturer was not contacted nor informed of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.

The steering wheel went off . and hard to turn . almost crashed

While driving down the road, the traction control light came on and i lost power steering control. it has happened three separate times while driving between thirty and forty-five mph.

Lost power steering, warning light came on after the issue, could not steer the vehicle, luckily it happened in the driveway, very dangerous if it happened on the road warning lights for power steering service (drive carefully) and stability controll warning

Lost power steering while driving. warning light and alarm came on dash. turned off ignition and back on and had steering back. this happened several times. this was in feb. 2019. didn't happen again until dec. 2019 and happened several times. each time it would lose power steering and i turn car off and back on and power returned. very dangerous when trying to steer because it is extremely difficult to steer without power. last time i lost it on the interstate and it was so dangerous. gm put out a recall on power steering on 2015 chev colorado(but not on ours for what reason?) recall # 15595. i have the exact problem on my 2015 chevy colorado!

While driving at highway speeds an audible warning came on along with a service power steering and a service stabilitrack message. all power steering was lost and the truck became extremely difficult to control. i was able to pull to the side of the road. power steering returned after a power cycle of the car. however the same failure happened during my next trip, again at highway speeds. i was lucky that this happened on a straight section of freeway both times as the truck is practically uncontrollable when this happened. a review of this issue on the internet reveals that a recall has been issued for this issue. however, it starts with vehicles manufactured in january 2016, but this vehicle was manufactured one month before the recall effective period.

In the last week my power steering has failed 4 times. the vehicle has been in motion each time. one time i was on the expressway. , twice on city streets and the last time on my home street. the vehicle has just over 68,000 miles. if i turn the vehicle off and wait a minute or two and then turn it back on i have power steering control back.

Power steering turns off while driving or even when stationary. stability track light also comes on. resets when turning motor off and on again. intermittent problem since may 2019 - bought as used vehicle.

Going about 20-30 miles an hour. i recieved a warning message to check my power steering. i had lost all power steering, but i was able to pull off the side of the road, turn my truck off and back on and everything was good.

On october 31, 2019, i was driving on a twisty mountain road in az when the dashboard alert about power steering control chimed out several times. i could clear the message, but it kept coming back. the next day i stopped at the chevy dealership in payson, az and they said i had a bad battery (odd voltage which they thought was triggering the warnings) which they replaced. after this repair, i got back on the road for about 30 miles, and the warnings began again. i turned around, went back to the dealer, and they spent several hours checking everything before telling me that i would have to replace the entire power steering module at a cost of $2000+. since i am traveling (i don't live in az) and the parts for the repair would take a few days to arrive, i didn't schedule to have the work done, and i have continued to drive on. the warnings continue to ring out irregularly, often when i'm going straight down the road without turning (as well as every time i start the car), but the wheel hasn't seized up yet. it is worrisome, particularly as i am driving on freeways or in heavy traffic. i am over 2000 miles from home.

While driving my 2015 chevrolet colorado on the 2 fwy in glendale ca when the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist while driving, it became very difficult to steer. a warning appeared on the dash reading power steering service required drive safely. also a traction control warning. i pulled over and turned off the ignition and the error cleared but came back within 2 minutes. i took it to my local chevy dealer autonation chevy in valencia and they read an error code of a poor electrical connection within the torque-sensor harness connector. they recommended flashing the computer with latest firmware. they did this for a $200 fee. and within 1 day it did the same error condition again. i did some research online and found there is a recall for this exact condition for 2015 chevy colorado's. my dealer saids there is no open recalls they can see but below is what ive found. recall bulletin 15595a.the national highway traffic safety administration campaign id number for this recall is 16v054. i brought this to my dealers attention to no avail.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving various speeds, the power steering completely failed and the power steering warning indicator illuminated simultaneously. the contact had to restart the vehicle in order for the power steering to return to normal. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 36,000.

Driving down road, steering went hard with alarms ,about 35mph.stopped and restarted, was normal steering. happened 3 more times in next couple of days, took to dealer, they read codes and saw alarms. they cleaned steering sensor assy, and seemed fine, 2 days later happened again, 3 times in 10 minutes. one was while parked, next while pulling out of parking spot, and third was on a curve , was in left turn lane of two left turn lanes. could not stay in left lane and almost hit the car in the other left turn lane, pulled over and restarted truck, drove home with no problems. have not driven vehicle since. door plaque shows build date as 11/2014 and is prior to 15595 recall and truck has 29000 miles. dealer says cost to fix is 2300 dollars.

I was on my why home coming up to a red light. i was at a crawl when service stabilitrak came up on my screen. i lost all power steering, so it was difficult to turn the vehicle at any speed. i have looked up to see if anyone else has had this problem. i have found that it isn't super common but seems like way too many vehicles are having this issue.

Experienced a failure of the steering system (power assist stopped working) first on saturday, september 28, 2019 at approximately 35 mph speed; and subsequently on sunday, september 29, 2019 at approximately 65 mph; then, on monday september 30, 2019 and tuesday october 1, 2019. the vehicle is currently with dealer where it was purchased. two warning lights appeared each time the steering failure occurred. also, two messages display in the digital display within the "dashboard": 1. service power steering (drive with care) 2. service stabilitrak vehicle steering immediately compromised, very difficult to steer with dangerous change in effort required to steer, loss of control due to steering change. in each case, slowed speed to adjust to changed steering condition. upon researching this defect, see many references and documentation to exact same conditions and defect described here. manufacturer (chevrolet/gm) has acknowledged equipment defect - with recall, but not yet for vin of my vehicle - appealing this here/now due to multiple reports of defect to same year, type vehicles not recognized by chevrolet/gm yet with appeal for confirmation to recall this and similar vehicles (2015 chevrolet colorado)

2 times in the last month my power steering has turned off while driving straight on the highway at approximately 60 mph, other alerts pop up on my dashboard but i have been so focused on safely trying to get off the road i dont know what they are. when i restart the vehicle the steering seems to work again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving two blocks down the road, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to steer. in addition, the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to drive normally; however, the failure recurred two blocks down the road. the vehicle was taken to max motors nevada (1405 n osage blvd, nevada, mo 64772, (417) 667-4000) where part number: 84498587 sl-n gear, four bolt, clamp, and nut were replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided case number: 95534473637. the failure mileage was approximately 49,945.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving various speeds, the radio, turn signals, back-up camera, and power steering went out. the service power steering and stabilitrak warning indicators illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that nhtsa campaign number: 16v054000 (steering) was closed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

While operating my colorado at 45 mph the power steering went out causing me to lose all control of the truck and almost getting into an accident. i restarted the truck and it was able to take my colorado to dealer which found that the electronic steering sensor needed to be replaced at $2800. checking the internet i found a growing number of similar complaints of colorodo owners losing control of their vehicles while the car is in motion. this is extremely dangerous and i want to warn everyone to get this checked as a safety issue. chevrolet has opened an investigation [xxx]. extremely dangerous especially depending on the driving experience of the driver as these vehicles are generally purchased for new young drivers. i will continue to investigate and suggest anyone reading to do your homework as well your life or in my case; my kids life may depend on it. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt

On four separate occasions, my vehicle has lost power steering without warning. this occurred when driving at a variety of speeds and in a variety of conditions. one time, i was traveling at less than 5 miles an hour. another time, i was traveling at 70 miles per hour. some times it occurred during a turn, sometimes it occurred while traveling in a straight line. when power steering was lost, many warning lights would go off on the dashboard. after pulling the vehicle over to the side of the road, turning the vehicle off and then back on somewhere between 1 and 3 times, the power steering would come back.

Power steering went out with in a parking lot while driving. the following error on the instrument cluster "power steering fault service power steering, drive safely" luckily i was able to pull over immediately, just barely, into a large parking section. i checked the fuses

Power steering message pops up while driving and wheel is extremely difficult to steer. has happened twice. reset 9/9/2019 and hasn't happened again yet. very dangerous especially since 16 year old daughter sometime drives.

While driving at a high rate of speed (approximately 55 mph) on a two lane county road, the power steering failed on two separate occasions. when this occurred at both times, the steering became extremely difficult, a message appeared on the instrument panel that stated that the power steering had failed and to drive cautiously. the first time, not knowing what was happening, i braked to a stop, turned the engine off and then started the engine. the message reappeared briefly, the disappeared. with the second event, i was able to pull into an unoccupied parking lot, which was very difficult due to the steering. at that time, i again turned the engine off and then restarted the engine. the message again had appeared as it had at the first occurrence. it was fortunate with the first occurrence that no one following behind me and with the second occurrence i had to pull hard on the steering wheel to keep from going into the opposing lane. the first time occurred on september 3rd 2019 and the second was on september 10th 2019. the first time, i had called the dealership and was told that unless the truck currently had failing power steering, that most likely nothing would be found wrong and would waste my money. after the second time, i made an appointment with the dealership to have them check it out and mentioned to them that there had been a recall on some 2015 chevy colorado's dealing with power steering problems. the appointment is on 9-17-19.

Power steering went out 3 times while driving. message lit up on dash. stopped car and restarted to correct. roughly every 250 miles. happened 9/1/2019,9/8/2019, and again 9/14/2019. dropped off at jim butler chevrolet on 9/17/2019, just received call today 9/19/2019 that a specialist is now looking at it. 3 days no car has been difficult. had 16 year old daughter or even wife been driving there is no way they could have controlled it, very dangerous. first time on gravel road in oakland arkansas, 2nd time most dangerous on interstate 44 in st. louis at 65 mph, third time in bolivar missouri pulling out of gas station.

While driving, occasional error message will appear on dic alerting that power steering has gone out. vehicle is very hard to steer manually. this issue has occurred at low speeds driving through neighborhoods and on the highway. gm issued a recall for only select 2015 chevy colorados and the dealership says my vin is not part of that recall.

I experienced loss of power steering assist on my 2015 colorado (vin# [xxx]) at start up or while driving and immediately looked on line for a recall from gm. i found out that indeed gm had recalled this years colorado's and took it to the dealer for repair. well it turns out that although the same problem, since the vin number of my truck did not match the recalled numbers, the dealer would not take care of it. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt *tr

Multiple times over the last several months, i have lost all power steering in my vehicle. the stabilitrack is now also being affected. i understand there is an active investigation into gms recall of this vehicle for this specific reason. i wanted to make sure that my vehicle is added into your complaint count for your investigation. i lose steering at any and all speeds, both while driving straight and turning. i am very concerned that i am going to injured if this continues to happen. i cannot and will not pay for this out of my own pocket. what can i do?

Driving at 65 mph on the freeway the power steering quit. steering became very difficult. a message came on in the instrument cluster that said 'service power steering, drive with caution. the road was smooth, no bumps or turns when it happened. pulled over and checked under hood, found no obvious problem. when restarted everything worked ok for about 10 miles then power steering quit again on city street at 20 mph driving straight no numbs. took truck to dealership and it is there now 08/12/2019. dealer said they have not heard of this issue before but i see it is a known problem.

My truck is acting crazy with multiple warnings in dash display, first one is stability track warning, steering warnings and the speed, temperature and revolution gauges start going up and down while the warnings are in the display. also the have tw warning that i don't know what means.

The steering cuts off randomly and makes it difficult to steer, very dangerous when it stops working at slower speeds, i've done research and a lot of these trucks are having the same problem

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving approximately 65-70 mph, the contact heard an audible sound and the power steering and stabilitrac warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle lost power steering ability and was taken to hoffman chevrolet (now renamed fitzgerald chevrolet cadillac of hagerstown, located at 101 s edgewood dr, hagerstown, md 21740, (240) 329-2004) to be diagnosed. the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code. the contact was informed that there was a software update that may be able to correct the failure. the software update was performed; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v054000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

This morning i turned on my 2015 chevy colorado z71 drove 5 minutes down road as i cut though backside of mall parking lot lucky there is no traffic in the moring as my dash dinged and lit up saying service power steering. i lost all power steering the wheel became really stiff to turn but i was able to pull to the side. i turned off and on the truck magically error went away, and i regained power steering. looks like my vehicle is experiencing the same issue as others i called gm and filed complaint they offered for a tow to dealer (i passed for now sense i have to pay out of pocket and do not have $2000 for repair) it seems fine for now fingers crossed if it happens again i have to schedule some time to get it checked at a dealer or towed to it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving various speeds, the steering lost power and the traction control and power steering indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to feldman chevrolet of highland (248-329-3540, located at 3372 w highland rd, highland, mi 48357) where it was determined that the vin was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 146,000.

February 2017 (34141 miles) - lost power steering suddenly while driving at highway speed w/"power steering service" warning. pulled over w/difficulty, shut down, restarted, problem seemed to disappear. had code red at local chevy dealership, no charge, advised to return if issue recurred. may 2017 (38494 miles) - same issue. returned to same chevy dealership, diagnosed "poor connection in torque sensor harness", installed sl-n-housing kit using n-lubricant and stated it was covered by warranty. july 2019 (71474 miles) - identical issue (driving, highway speed, power steering lost w/"power steering service" warning, and additionally traction control loss warning). pulled over w/difficulty. shutdown, issue resolved on restart. same day - went to same chevy dealer, told to return the next am due to scheduling. 10 july 2019 - returned to same chevy dealer. after 2+ hours of inspection was informed the sensor could not be replaced alone and that a large portion of the steering column had to be entirely replaced due to the failing "torque sensor harness" w/repairs/parts estimated at over $2000.00. when i suggested that this may be a recall issue i was informed that the month my 2015 was built was not part of the recall even though the problem is essentially the same. note: the above vehicle is and has been almost exclusively driven on well maintained roads w/no aggressive off road use/abuse.

On 4 separate occasions in the past month i have lost power steering. no codes are issued only lights on the dash stating "service power steering" and " service sabilitrack". the first 2 incidents occurred on a straight stretch of highway at 45 mph, 1 incident occurred in a parking lot at 15 mph. these 3 were manageable but the 4th occurred in a curve at 45 mph. this one took all i had to keep the vehicle from going off the road and down an embankment. in all incidents the vehicle was stopped, turned of and restarted shortly after the lose and the problem was gone. vehicle is scheduled into a local chevy dealer to see what they say is wrong.

While under pre owned warranty trucks power steering would not work when vehicle was first started. only activating after restarting vehicle multiple times. took it in to john l sullivan in roseville they said they could not diagnose the problem and it had nothing to do with a recall. by this time it had happened twice. i continued to drive vehicle until the power steering went out on i 80 in heavy traffic on my way to work at the dmv. my first week of employment with the state. luckily it wasnt during a turn because it was a struggle just to get it off to the shoulder. the truck was taken to dealership the same day where they were able to diagnose the problem. perhaps the bumper to bumper warranty is what made them unable to originally diagnose the problem. because the truck was now under 2k over warrenty limit of 36k. in the end they replaced rack and pinion for total of 1700 dollars. after all the poor customer service and faulty claims they made before this issue i wouldnt put it past them to have seen the problem the first time. especially because when speaking to a service rep over the phone he mention that within a year of me buying the vehicle they had updated or corrected something to do with the steering. something the rep at the first encounter of bringing the truck in failed to mention

I have a 2015 chevrolet colorado with about 54,000 miles and purchased it used in 2018 from pohanka chevrolet with about 22,000. while driving under normal highway conditions on july 02, 2019, my truck experienced an abrupt loss of power steering. i was able to safely stop on the side of the highway, turn off the vehicle, and restart the vehicle. power steering function returned. i inspected the power steering fluid and noted that there was a sufficient amount in the reservoir. i continued driving with no issue until two days later when the same problem occurred again while driving. i stopped on the side of the road and restarted the vehicle like before with the power steering returning on restart. however, the same issue occurred again within minutes of driving. it happened a total of four ties on two separate days. on friday, 05 july i took my vehicle to my normal chevrolet dealership and they diagnosed that the problem was due to a malfunctioning steering gear torque sensor that would cost $1,962 to replace. i researched the issue further and found that the exact same issue was replicated in recall bulletin 15595a. however, my 2015 chevrolet colorado was not covered in that recall. it seems possible that the issue noted in 15595a may have been more expansive than was originally discovered.

Power steering on my 2015 chevy colorado as well as stable track goes out intermittently. it can happen when i'm driving or starting the car. turning the vehicle off and on again usually fixes the issue temporarily. took the vehicle to the mechanic and codes co545, u0420, b1325 and u04135 which are the steering wheel torque sensor, invalid data received from power steering control module, control module power current voltage below threshold, and invalid data received from brake control module. the truck is barely 4 years old and to replace the part will be 2300. it is exhibiting the same issues as the recall in 2016 and searching around i find more people having the same issues.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 chevrolet colorado. while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering ability seized without warning. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and turned off the engine. once restarted, the steering returned to normal; however, the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering module failed and needed replacement. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000. the consumer stated the failure did not appear on the on star computer system but, the dealer was able to replicate the failure. *js the consumer referenced recall n202325410. the consumer requested to reimbursed for the failures.

Total loss of power steering assist with "service power steering" message on screen while driving at highway speeds. also loss of antiskid and stabilirak. very dangerous condition! can't image what might have happened if this failed in a turn. the vehicle is not drivable in this condition.

The power steering maintenance and traction control comes on while driving and locks up the steering. i had to pull over immediately because i wss driving on a city street, turning into the residential area where i live. the steering was hard. i tutned off the vehicle restarted and the wsrning messaged were gone and i regained the power steering. this had happened twice while driving.

Power steering goes out very had to steer, a man can still steer my wife can not. steering started going out at about 35000 miles. truck was in motion. shut off motor and restart steering works . i had gm fix it cost 1900$ gm paid 1000$ if they new it's bad they should recall or pay all of cost

Power steering goes out at any time no warning hard to steer a man can steer it my wife can not

While driving power steering is disabled, when i stop the vehicle and restart the power steering functions again. this has happened while on a highway.

My truck rang 3 times and a prompt showed up on the dash saying service power steering and loss of stabilitrack. i was sitting at the drive thru and had to pull straight into a parking spot because turning the vehicle became pretty much impossible. my truck only has 30,000 miles on it.
