We have classified the 1199 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about STEERING into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact was driving approximately 50 mph, when the traction control, abs and emissions warning lights illuminated. suddenly, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and the speedometer began fluctuating between 50 and 70 mp. in addition, the fuel level gauge began to fluctuate between one quarter tank to three quarters. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact that the failure was caused by the body control module. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 79,000.
As i was coming to stop at a red light, i heard a ding and "power steering" flashed on my dashboard. my car then started to jerk, and continued when i sped up. this has happened several times after the first incident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the steering wheel would lock intermittently. the dealer and manufacturer were notified and referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system) but advised that the recall did not associate the contacts vin. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 50,000.
My chevrolet cobalt 2006 has a steering column problem. it makes noises, like a rattle and i bought the car on 03/16/2011, used and since the first week after precarious i've taken the car to get fix every day except for saturdays and still can not get it fix. it also shakes violently at times and its very, very scary. *tr
The power steering light comes on and goes out. when the car is turned off and on again, it works for moments before it cuts off again. this makes it very hard to drive the car and increases the changes of crashes. *tr
I was driving home and lost power to the steering wheel and i was unable to turn the steering wheel left or right. very stiff and pulled off to the side of the road. i called roadside assistance to come get me, after waiting 20 minutes, i turned it back on and the wheel was free to move again. this occured a second time last week when i started my car in the morning. i turned it off and on several times and finally it worked. the car is very unsafe and i was afraid to drive it as it may happen again going a faster speed. currently the car is now at the shop looking at the power steering mechanism that is bad. it is a recall and already replaced and is bad again. this is a serious problem where the car can stop working at anytime which gives you no control over the vehicle. *tr
Our 2006 chevy cobalt has issues with the powersteering. it malfunctions often but with no apparent trigger. the warning system is not reliable because it doesn't always give warning of the failure, and sometimes it dings and no failure occurs. when malfunctioning the steering is extremely difficult to use. a great amount of force is required to turn the steering wheel. the problem may occur at any time and at any speed. then when the steering is locked it often frees up spontaneously! this is very dangerous!!! this is my second complaint. we purchased our 2006 chevy cobalt new and at about 23k miles we began to have problems with the power steering. the power steering assist motor has been replaced several times and the column was also replaced. we just had the psa motor replaced through the recall for the second time. our particular car was not even listed in the recall but the dealership did the repairs because of our longterm issue. i believe there must be some other part causing the problem (sporadic and unreliable steering) because the psa motor has been replaced several times but the problem continues to reoccur. now our car has high mileage and gm is unwilling to "do" anything to make this right. we have been paying for this defective and dangerous car for 4 years now and the problem has still not been resolved! i'm afraid this issue will cause serious injury or death, it must be fixed! this defective product is a hazard to all people on the road. the 'new' psa motor does not work any better then the original part. *tr
Steering: electric power assist system - i have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. four months ago, i took the vehicle to the dealership to have nhtsa recall campaign number: pe10005 10v073000 completed. for the last four months the vehicle performed as it had prior to experience the power steering issue that prompted me to have the recall performed. for the last week, i have experienced intermittent power steering loss. each time, while driving the power steering loss warning message appears and i have a overall loss of power steering, the braking system is compromised as it is slow to respond and the vehicle (an automatic transmission) shakes violently as if it was trying to shift gears. this loss typically subsides at higher speeds. i believe that the replacement part is also defective. the power steering returns if the vehicle is stopped and the engine is turned off then back on, however after less than 1/2 a mile the power steering loss warning message appears again and the issues return. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that after receiving repairs under nhtsa campaign: 10v073000 (steering: electric power assist), the vehicle began stalling sporadically and the power steering warning light illuminated. the dealer advised that the failure could have been caused by the wiring harness under the dashboard which he discovered was corroded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer twice yet the dealer was unable to pinpoint the failure and could only suggest that it was the wiring harness, which was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 68,000. updated 04/15/11*lj the consumer stated the dealer kept the vehicle for a week to correct the problem. the vehicle is currently operating in a normal manner. updated 11/04/11

First time we had problem was christmas eve 2010 car stumbled. check engine light appeared t\c light appeared. car dinged power steering came up on info center all as we were on a country road on our way to our families christmas . we stopped shut car off my husband got out and checked all fluids and fuses all were ok then we. started car again and everything was back to normal for quite a awhile he said it might have just got confused there. then the problem popped up intermittently here and there .right around october 2011 not sure of exact date but me and 3 children where on our way across the state of indiana to see my husband that was working out of town and about 100miles into trip the cars power steering went out and made the car very hard to maneuver lights came on. as did in late 2010 so i pulled over and turned car off and did as my husband did and everything was good. but when i turned car back on it still had lights on so i called my husband and he told me to try unhook battery for like 10 minutes then hook back up and i did that and luckily it worked and we made it to where he was staying and we never had anymore problems till 9/15/12 when i was driving to see my mother and it happened again but this time in heavy traffic at a stop light and this time had all same symptoms but also a new one the transmission wouldn't shift from low gear. and it won't go off my husband researched on internet and found recalls for cobalts and numerous complaints of same steering problems but when i called gm and gave woman my vin she stated no recalls for my vehicle i don't understand if it is the same make of vehicle same problems they can pick and choose who has a problem and who doesn't. i am gonna try to solve this by taking to gm customer service, but if they not willing to work with me i will be more than happy to sign onto a class action lawsuit. *tr
The power steering motor had a recall and when my car started having problems a short time later we took it in to have it replaced. a year and 2 days later, or 20,000 miles later, the power steering stopped working while driving again. we took the vehicle to the shop and was told by my mechanic that his supplier sells so many motors for the power steering that they had 64 on stock because they sold at least 10 a week. a week later the power steering went out again. we took the car back and was told that they investigated the problem and a site for mechanics where they can put in problems and try and get solutions from other mechanics that may have had the same problem had over 1,000 cases of the same problem and no resolution. we have since replaced the steering column because when they were putting the car back together they accidentally hit the steering column and everything went dead and they hit the steering column again and everything came back normal. we were told there is a short, there is a known problem (and yes, gm knows because they have had mechanics call them about the problem repeatedly) and still no resolution or recall to completely overhall the power steering system. there are 1,000's of cobalts on the road from when we were told by the sales people that the car was safe that are not safe and no one is fixing it. there are known cases from where people have died due to the problem and still no resolution. http://getsatisfaction.com/gm/topics/cobalt_power_steering http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2006/chevrolet/cobalt/?q=&page=67 http://www.wtae.com/r/24443172/detail.html http://www.pressandguide.com/articles/2011/12/27/news/doc4ef9cac3d6db6656927102.txt?viewmode=fullstory. *tr

In april i received a recall for the chevy cobalt 2006, it was for the power steering assist motor, i waited nearly 7 months even though i placed order in april. i finally got it done after the power steering light went off in dec. and called the dealership with my frustration because i never received a call that the part was in. a week later the power steering light went off again, come to find out i need a new power steering column (this is a 4 year old car!!!), so the recall should not just be the motor but the steering column as well, this is very dangerous, the steering completely goes and you can barely turn the steering wheel. this needs to be looked into asap before someone gets hurt or killed. *tr
Problems with the power steering..had the[xxx] moto replaced and now they telling me i need 2000 worth of work to fix the issue.. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I have a 2006 chevy cobalt that is having power steering issues. i thought that the recall repair would fix the issue as i had it repaired a week ago. after the repair the power steering light came on and the car became hard to steer. the car was taken back to an authorized dealer and they charged me $43.00 to diagnose the problem and came up with several codes in the computer but could not duplicate the issue. they reset the computer and it happened again today. no power steering and the car started shuttering the power steering light came on and the traction control light comes on. when i turned the car off and restarted it i then had power steering but the check engine light was still on. this is a very dangerous situation and i do not believe gm is fixing the right problem. *tr
Vehicle power steering failed again two weeks after dealer performed mandated recall work to fix power steering failures with this model of vehicle. with most recent steering failure, dealer claims they can't duplicate the problem and that they do not have to perform any more warranty work to fix the power steering since they say they already did the required recall work. what leaves us with a vehicle that potentially still suffers from intermittent lose of power assist to the steering. *tr

My daughter owns a 2006 chevy cobalt, (which i provided much of the $$ for) it has approx 32k miles. it recently developed an issue with a knocking sound from under the dashboard that continues for 10-15 seconds almost every time the car is started. she took the car to a local trusted repair shop, and it was determined to be a power steering problem that the mechanic felt should /could be a recall item and suggested that she take it to the dealership; charged $48. dealership checked out car free of charge (that is suspicious) for 2 hours, and determined that it was a problem with the intermediate steering shaft part # 15800140. they referred to bulletin # 04-03-08-006d.the approx cost to repair it would be $1100, but it was deemed safe to drive although the knocking sound would be a nuisance. soon after i researched the internet and easily found numerous complaints, injuries, and accidents from cobalt steering problems for 2005-2009 vehicles, yet it was not a recall item. i know that my daughter's current issue will only get much worse and the value of the car is very diminished. the odds of selling it are slim. please! make chevrolet recall cobalt for their steering defects a.s.a.p. we work hard and can't afford to repair this vehicle. but, i will pay to have it repaired to save my daughter's life, what choice do we have? *tr
I have a 06 chevy cobalt. since october 2007, the power steering has been going out and the transmission has been acting up. at the beginning, the problem would occur only once in a while. now it is happening everyday. i'm currently a nursing student and rely on my car. there have been many times when my car would start acting up and during dangerous conditions such as thunderstorms or just in an unsafe part of town. i was happy when a power steering recall was issued, but after having the recalled fixed, the problem is still occurring! i'm a michigan native and know first hand the impact on the economy on the american auto industry. i wanted to support the local economy by choosing this car. now i don't think i would ever buy a gm car again. something more needs to be done! this car is not safe!!! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 65 mph, the power steering failed when the contact attempted to turn left to exit the highway. she had to use additional force to complete the turn and avoid a crash. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who would not offer assistance. the contact called the manufacturer. the failure mileage was approximately 82,000 and the current mileage was approximately 86,000.
Car would cut off when steering wheel was tilted and at times key would not come out of ignition. *tr
A gear somewhere within the steering column is cheaply made and wears out. there is slack between the teeth on the gear's. in result as you go over small bumps and big there is a clunk noise from the steering column. as well as the car does not track straight down the road because of the slack in the gear teeth the tires slightly wobble as driving because the steering wheel is not controlling the tires for the amount of slack between the gap in the gear teeth. i believe this needs to be a safety recall based on the severity of being a steering issue, and as a result, loss of steering could be possible if the gears completely strip out. it is not an uncommon problem, considering almost everyone who owns a cobalt experiences this same exact problem. please look into this. chevy refuses to recognize!!! *tr
I have a problem power steering my chevrolet cobalt 2006. *tr

Power steering message appeared within a few days of having it serviced due to the power steering recall. power steering message appears all the time (almost every time i drive it). sometimes power steering message appears and car starts jerking and is hard to steer). when that happens i have to pull over and shut the car off and restart it. sometimes this works but occassionally it doesn't. a couple of times i have went to back out of my parking spot at work and have not been able to turn the wheel at all. i have contacted the dealer where it was serviced and chevy and basically was told that they couldn't help me unless i took it to have the problem diganosed at my expense (70- 200 and something dollars), and "if" it is related to the power steering recall they may help me with the cost of the repair. i don't think i should have to pay to have the problem diagnosed when their solutiion to their recall didn't fix the problem. my key has gotten stuck in the ignition a couple of times. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact was driving 10 mph when the vehicle exhibited an unusual metal to metal noise from the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics where they both were unable to duplicate or locate a failure. the dealer was informed of the failure and advised the contact that the failure was potentially caused by the rack and pinion needing replacement. the vehicle was repaired at the owners expense. the failure mileage was 52,432 and the current mileage was 52,797.
My daughter has (had) a 2006 cobalt. we were co-owners of this car but she was the primary driver. we did receive the recall notice and took it to a gm dealer on 6/21/10 for the repair. on tuesday, august 3, 2010, she was driving home on a two lane country road and was less than 1/4 mile from home when she wrecked. the car suddenly pulled to the right side of the road and couldn't be steered back, she side swiped a telephone pole, the car pulled hard the other way, she fought for control of the car but lost. she kept hitting the brakes and the car spun around and was stopped when it got stuck on steps and a railing on a downhill slope into someone's yard. thankfully she was not seriously hurt but is suffering from back and neck pain and had abrasions and bruises. she had to crawl out a window because neither door would open. we have pictures of the car and parts that went everywhere. can you help us and direct us what to do? *tr
