We have classified the 254 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
My 05 chevrolet cobalt has a power steering warning on dic when i start it (i had the power steering replace during recall). and then it acts crazy. more warning lights are turned on, check engine light, theft deterrent lights, warning chime etc. the speedometer and tachometer reads jump up and down. i can't accelerate it continuously. noise can be heard sometimes. it will come to a sudden stop and then pick up speed again when i am driving. imagine i was driving 70mph on a highway! this problem could be fatal and cause major damage. i have to restart several times to get rid of it. this happens twice a week at the very beginning and then more and more often. sent it to the dealer but they were not able to locate the problem, simply saying the codes read modules not communicating. but they have no idea of what causes this problem. it's totally unacceptable as this is such a common problem for this model as far as i can see at online forum. gm should really do something after hearing so many complaints on the same issue. it's extremely dangerous. don't wait til a big price has been paid! big safety issue! *kb
The power steering light came on. i had no mileage or speedometer reading. i took it to mr. tire which was about 3 miles away. they put the car on a machine and found mil code u0101. they told me to take it to the dealer because there was a recall for this. i called the dealer the next morning and took it right over to them. they had the car for two days and finally called me and told me that they had to replace the tcm and reprogram it, clear the codes and retest. this was going to cost $500. i had taken this car to bob bell last june when i received the recall notice. it was repaired. after a few months i noticed that three or four times the signal came on about brakes but then disappeared and everything seemed fine. then this monday this happened.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the instrument panel gauges were malfunctioning and the power of steering would fail sporadically without warning. in addition, the transmission was shifting gears independently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 53,000.
Not sure exactly when it happened, but it has been occurring for years now. i have spent thousands of dollars in diagnostics, parts, and labor trying to fix the mystery problem! i'm fed up! it seems to happen randomly and fix itself randomly. sometimes it lasts a couple days and sometimes longer than a couple weeks. the problem: my car will lose power steering, it starts shifting really hard and the gauges inside get all screwed. occasionally when it happens it just won't shift at all. it will stay in first gear. the inside gauges: the speedometer will bounce all over the place, never staying still. the radio will also get loud and quiet by itself. the power locks would frantically go up and down themselves, until i took out the spark plug for those. it is very difficult to drive when the power steering goes out, not like cars that were built without it in the first place. the very hard shifting cannot be good for the car and is dangerous when i am driving during winter months or rainy weather. i live in michigan and it snows a lot. even the chevy dealership can't tell me what is wrong and i have paid to have numerous parts replaced that have not fixed the problem. i've read other boards online with people having the same issue. i just cannot afford to keep paying to not get the problem fixed. i hate driving such an unreliable car with two young children, four years and 10 months. it happened multiple times when my little one was a newborn. felt like i was giving the poor baby whiplash when the car switched gears. it's an automatic so there is nothing i can do about it. *tr
We just bought a used 2005 chevy cobalt from the chevy dealership. the day we picked the vehicle up the car shut off and would not start. we took it back the dealership said it was the kill switch. we took the car back home with us. the same day, driving to another location the car shuts down while driving. two months later, the car still keeps shutting down while driving at any given time. i work at a mechanic shop and i have many mechanic friends. no one can explain why it keeps shutting off. i have researched on the internet for a while; many people with the same problems with no solution. this vehicle has low mileage and most complaints in forums with the same issue have the same problem with low miles or happening from first of purchase. do not know how to fix the problem. was told that the car must do this while mechanic is driving in order to try to repair the problem. no diagnosis can be made. i feel this problem will cause an accident; was close to getting hit today when car shut off in the middle lane of traffic. no parts purchased at this time. *tr
Had the power steering recall done a while ago. never had any problems before. now my power steering failure msg will come on the dash, then the transmission will shift real hard, jerking everyone inside. car will stall out when you come to a complete stop, but if you slow down and keep rolling, it will just stay in overdrive and takes forever to get back to speed. car also never gets to operating temperature in the winter, according to the temp gauge. had the temp sensor replaced, still no change, but i do have heat in the winter. also at times my security light will come on then the car will shutdown while i'm going down the road. other times it will take about 5 mins to get the car started. there will be other times the car chimes 4 times and nothing shows up, then other times the power steering msg will appear. i have only lost power steering about 5 times with this car since the recall was done, and never before. this is a known problem with these cars as i've been reading internet forums. this has been ongoing for the last 8-9 months. *tr
After starting the cobalt or even if i am driving down the interstate at 70 mph, the t/c lights, brake lights, power steering lights all light up on the dash. the speedometer and rpm gauges start going crazy. the radio will also go in and out. usually on the interstate, the car will continue to drive, which is very scary. but if i am in town or slowing down to stop, the car will cut off. then after i crank it again and start to move, the transmission changes gears really rough and feels like it is going to fall out. the only thing i have found to fix this (after weeks at different dealerships) is to turn the car off and flip the key on and off several(20 plus) times. *tr
The power steering light, traction control light and a bell chimes. while i am in traffic the car slows down and begins to jerk. it has happen twice this week march 14 and the 16 in 5:00 pm traffic. i was going 40 when it happened. i called my used car dealer and he stated no warranty and to take it to get checked out. i have only had this car 5 months. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized while driving at various speeds. the gauges on the instrument panel also displayed inaccurate readings whenever the failure occurred. the contact stated that she had to wait long periods of time before the steering wheel returned to normal functioning ability. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the failure was common for the make and model. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact also stated that prior to the failures, the vehicle was repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system). the failure mileage was unknown. the vin was unavailable.
My 2005 chevy cobalt has had repeated problems with error codes that the dealer has been unable to resolve. when these errors occur, the speedometer moves back and forward and the the car attempts to stall. the car does stall at slower speeds at times. whenever i take the vehicle to bob bell chevy in bel air ,maryland they tell me the can't find anything wrong when drive it . on 02/11/2011, i was told by the dealer rep ray, again, that he could not find anything wrong and to drive vehicle until it does this again and bring vehile in without turning it off and they will then check the codes. my chevy cobalt did the exact same again along with the error code "power sterring" across the screen as i was leaving the dealershipp on 02/11/2011 and i immediately returned to the service shop and the serviice technian obtained the error codes. ray from the service bob bell chevy stated now i had to pay for any diagnostic work and repairs even though this was a recall problem. my times this vehicle has been in the shop has been well documented by the dealership who each time intially deny their is a problem and state they cannot diagnose any problems unless they can reproduce they problem or i drive the vechile to them while it is happening without turning it off. this car is unsafe and has stalled several times when these error codes occur causing near accidents. i feel more investigation should be completed into why the makers of the chevy cobalt are unable to correctly diagnose error codes and continue to but my life and my family at risk. i am unable to trade this car in to anyone because of the repeated problems and i would never sell it to an innocent buyer who could by hurt with this car. why gm is allowed to get away with this defective car is not fair. *tr
Power steering failure. shut off while driving. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy cobalt, the key constantly gets stuck in the ignition, the last time this happened i was unable to turn my car off for over 5 hours. this is a problem for many reasons. not only will i probably have to replace that part but eventually the battery due to this. i've researched it online and see that it is a common complaint among many chevy's especially my model. i think since it's such a common issue their should be a recall for this. i don't see why i should waste over $800 to get something fixed that is more common than it should be. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the key would become stuck in the ignition sporadically. the gear shifter could not recognize the key, allowing the gear to move at any time. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. the failure and current mileage was 30,500.
I have had problems with traction control light coming on and when it does the car won't shift properly (automatic), jumps and stutters and dies. also lose power steering. this has been happening off and on ever since i got the car 5+ years ago. i have had it back to the dealership i bought it at (dodge dealer) at least twice who took it to a chevy dealer and have had it to local chevy dealers multiple times and no one can capture any codes or fix it. now it thinks the key is in the ignition all the time and locks don't work properly even tho i had switch replaced on recall. searched internet and see many others have had this same problem and some said it was abs issue. why has there been no recall? *tr
Made left turn and my airbag went off. mechanic said that the clock spring shorted out internally in the coil and deployed the airbag. gm has not contacted me over this matter and have been trying to get them to reimburse me for since 2010.
Ongoing obvious electrical issues with an '05 chevy cobalt -- key won't come out of ignition, lights & radio go off at will, new battery dies every 3rd day in all weather. bought car used in '08 with 45,000 miles. problems started almost immediately and have been consistent every since. *tr
*please note...the incident date is approximate. we have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt sedan that was involved in the recall for the power steering motor intermittent power steering failure. we had never had a problem with the steering prior to the recall being performed. after the recall was performed, we began having trouble with intermittent power steering failure - plus additional failures. upon start-up, we have experienced no power steering, and had to shut the vehicle off and retry numerous times before the power steering returns. in addition to loss of power steering, we have experienced the following electrical problems: traction control light illuminating random clicking of the brake safety interlock relay / actuator (without touching the brake). check engine light transmission going into "limp mode"..."slamming" into gear when shifting from park - or improper shifting while driving. random dash gauge failure random failures of the "driver's information center" - flashing, etc. this was initially happening only upon start-up...but started happening while driving as well - nearly leading to an accident while my wife was driving on a busy urban street. she was fortunately able to drift into the turn lane and come to a stop to avoid a collision and likely serious injury to herself and others, as it was virtually uncontrollable. in addition to the loss of power steering (while driving), the transmission also went into "limp mode", causing very hard shifting and much difficulty in drivability. this has also happened while i was driving the vehicle. i am 6'3", 260lbs., and i was struggling to control the vehicle. i have also been in contact with other cobalt owners with the exact same set of "symptoms". it is clear that the motor replacement was not sufficient to repair the problem, and - in some cases - may be leading to further problems as in our case. this vehicle is very dangerous! *tr
The event leading up to this i would try to unlock the doors from inside to let family members in and i noticed that they unlock button did not work so i was like maybe its a fuse well my boyfriend checked the fuse and it was still in great shape. so then i started to notice that my locks would go up and down up and down by theirselves so i checked the fuse once again same thing great shape so it kept on doing this and finally i said im taking the fuse out so i did and now i have to hand lock all my doors i dislike that. this is what cuts the cake i was coming home from work as i was going down the hill my cars lights start to dim i was like what in the world is going on so then the car started to go haywire on me the cars gauges started to move up and down by theirselves my whole car went pitch black i did not have any lights back or front its like my cars was just a black ball i had no lights my blinkers did not work my flashers did not work. there were like 10 other cars behind me i was praying to god that nobody would hit me so i pulled over my symbols was coming on and going down on my gauges was stuck in downward mode gas hand mph hand my cd player (factory installed with car) quit working it still does not work and im still have this problem......but before all this my check engine light came on so i took it to auto zone and had them put it on their machine and he told me that it wont read it so he said there is a electrical problem and you better get that fix before your car catches fire yea he scared me but hey my car is all i got and i don't have any other means of transportation so could you pleas tell me what the heck went wrong. thanks *tr
The problem began when my 2005 chevy cobalt would shut off on its own when sitting at a stop light/sign. i took it to the dealer and they told me there was nothing wrong with the car. several months later. the car began to jerk as i would drive at low speeds (below 25 mph). if i turned the car off and back on it would be fine. then several weeks later as i drove down the highway (65 mph) all the gauges on the dash began to go crazy and the power steering light came on. as i slowed the car down it began to jerk as it did before and then i could not turn the wheel. my car was broke down on the side of a very busy highway during morning rush hour traffic. i had to have the car towed to the dealer. they then told me that they can't find anything wrong with the car. i had the power steering pump replaced per the recall several months ago. several other people with the same car are experiencing the same problem. the chevy dealer will not fix the car because they say they cannot find anything wrong with it. the is unsafe to drive because it will brake down at random times. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while attempting to turn the vehicle off, the key would not come out of the ignition. the gear shaft would not go in park and the vehicle began to roll backwards. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership and was advised this was a known problem and had happened several times. the contact was advised to pay $397 for the repair. the contact spoke with the manufacturer who advised the problem had happened several times. the contact filed a complaint and received a call from the manufacturer who closed the case. no further assistance was given by the manufacturer. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure miles were 50000. the vin was not available.
After having the recall work done on my 2005 chevy cobalt for the power steering assist less than 2 hours later all of the lights on the dash start flashing ( brake, abs, traction control, security ) the transmission starts acting up and you could hear a clicking noise coming from the shifter and the dash led said power steering......and sure enough the power steering failed, pulled to the side of the road shut the car off for a few minutes then restarted the power steering re-set but the rest of the problems persisted, finally got the car to the house by manually shifting the transmission because if i didn't it shifted very hard like it was going to tear something up, got on line found that this problem is found in other cobalts, one suggestion was to remove the battery cable over night and that should re-set everything, i did that and sure enough it re-set it, however this has happened about 15-20 times since the re-call work so it's not the assist motor at fault it is g.m. at fault for not re-calling this problem. *tr
I have a 2005 chevy cobalt. 59000 miles on it. had the whole power steering problem right after i financed the car, the recall that went out in march was replaced immediately, 3000 miles later (i drive about 2500-3000 a month) power steering started acting up again, took it to a mechanic, it wouldn't act up for him, he said to bring it back when it was actually acting up. it worked fine for a few weeks, happened again, check engine light came on, took it in still wouldn't give him any problems, mechanic advised to have chevy check the power steering motor recall to see if maybe they replaced it with a bad motor. called chevrolet to get the power steering recall looked at again to see if maybe the replacement was a bad one..... chevy dealership looked at it, checked the car and said he didn't know what was going on with it, and that he could change a few things.... power steering column, new battery...etc. $1000 dollars + worth of work and not knowing the whole time if it was even the problem. worked ok again for a couple more weeks and now it doesn't want to shift in and out of gears and gain speed on the highway, check engine light came on, took it to a mechanic as soon as it happened, he took it out to test drive and the darn thing wouldn't act up on him. this car is a lemon, even the idiotic chevrolet people at the dealership don't know what it is going on with the car and don't know how to fix it. i just want the thing off my hands, don't want to have to pay anymore into it, it's unreliable and unsafe. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while trying to start the vehicle that the key would not turn in the ignition. the towing company attempted start the vehicle; however, the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the ignition needed to replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileage were unknown.
My 2005 chevy cobalt has an electrical problem since i bought it in may of this year. the gauges go haywire and power steering comes across the screen and then my car jerks. when it first happened i could just shut the car off and wait awhile and start it back up and then be fine. now when i start the car and let it warm up before i even drive it the screen says power steering and gauges are going haywire again. now my car just sits there and i can't drive it and still making payments. i went from a 1998 cavalier to this 2005 cobalt and have had nothing but problems with a newer vehicle. the chevy dealership told me i need a body control module. *tr

Approximately 15 occurrences of warnings lights randomly going off. such as the power steering and traction control. the power steering had been repaired over a year ago so, it was not associated to the recall that just now was issued. after that it started happening more often and more warning lights would light up -- for no apparent reason. it would never happen when i took it to the shop. then everything went "haywire" one night coming home from work at 1 am. dials and lights went wild and the car was hesitating, the gear shift was clicking and the car was "slamming" in and out of gear. i took it to my local chevy dealership and they could not find anything wrong. they told me maybe my fuel injectors needed cleaning!!!! one month later and it happened again. this time they said it was my body control module. quoted a price of $619 and it turned out to be $729!!!! i have checked on line and have found multiple comments from other cobalt owners who have experienced the same problem. this if very dangerous and chevy needs to recall the part!!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. the key failed to turn and could not be removed. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the contact received the recall notification related to nhtsa campaign id number 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system) but the part was unavailable. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate mileage was 87,000.
2005 chevy cobalt: the key continuously gets stuck in the ignition and does not release. it requires numerous attempts and time to either turn the car back on and try again or work the shift lever release until the key is released. it is very frustrating and several times i had to leave the key in the ignition because i was in a hurry to get to work and prevent from being late. i am also concerned that this may be related to other problems that could cause a safety issue. *tr
The key is stuck in the ignition. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. he referenced nhtsa recall campaign number 10v073000, steering electric power assist system and stated that the recall work was performed in april 2010. the failure recurred again within three weeks. while driving approximately 10-12 mph the power steering became difficult to control. he also stated that after the recall work was performed the temperature indicator no longer functioned properly and the fuel sensor no longer made a beeping sound. when he opened the door, the outside temperature was displayed, then the mileage and now the service air bag light was illuminated. the dealer asked him to bring the vehicle back but the contact had not taken the vehicle back. the failure mileage was unknown. the current mileage was 96,309.
I have a 2005 chevy cobalt ls with power steering problems and switch problems. my husband took it to auto zone and told him that the power steering was good so we took our car home with danger. since that day we have alots of problems. he had to replace several parts to the car. i wanted to give my report because i feel unsafe on my vehicle for me and my kids and others people life. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact was driving approximately 20 mph with a loss of power steering. the vehicle was able to continue in operation with caution. additionally, the transmission slipped and the speedometer fluctuated and displayed inaccurate readings. the manufacturer was notified; the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction. the vin number was unavailable. the failure mileage was 70,000. the current mileage was 72,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge and several warning lights illuminated intermittently. the contact stated that while driving, power steering failed. as a result, the steering became hard to maneuver. the vehicle was not taken to a repair shop or dealer for inspection or repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who stated that the vehicle should be taken for diagnostic. the failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 153,000.
At roughly 40,000 miles and 3 years of ownership, a problem with the shift lock on the car was observed. at first, the problem was limited to the key being stuck in the ignition even when the car was in park. after ejecting the key with the button on the bottom side of the steering column, the shifter would remain in park. eventually, the problem escalated to the point that the shifter could be moved from park to other gears without the key in the ignition. the car was taken to a dealership, but the problem could not be reproduced at the time. a few months passed after the escalated problem was first observed where the shifter behaved as intended or in the manner where the key would need ejected but the shifter would remain in park. after a failure in power steering system resulted in the replacement of the entire steering column by the dealership, the car was returned to the owner with the gearshift button stuck "down." since then, the key remains stuck in the ignition unless the ejection button is used and the shifter moves freely from park to any other gear even without a key in the ignition or a foot on the brake. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while pulling into a parking spot the contact took the key out the ignition. the vehicle remained on until the contact depressed the brake pedal and put the vehicle in first gear. the vehicle was still engaged after putting the key back into the ignition. several times the vehicle would not start instead it stalled. the contact did inform an authorized dealer and they installed a new ignition switch at the contacts expense. the contact was concerned since she has only owned the vehicle for one month. the failure mileage was 79200 and the current mileage was 80129.
Power steering column and motor replaced for over 1,000 dollars also bushing. engines stalls when pressing gas and brake pedal. key wouldn't come out ignition and my car wouldn't stay in park. had to pay a locksmith to remove the key. headlights keep having to be adjusted. wheel bearing and struts need to be replace but i don't have the money for all of these repairs for a 2005 vehicle. its to many problems for such a newer vehicle. what is chevy going to do about this, how many more people have to die or get injured. *tr
2005 chevy cobalt power steering failure. we purchased this car a few months ago and it has begun to have major problems. the car is inside of the timeline for power train warranty, but is over miles. the power steering light comes on followed by complete power steering failure, engine stalling, rough shifting, strange movements of the speedometer needle, check engine light comes on. power steering loss happens while driving and the engine has stalled while driving. the engine also stall when braking. this nearly caused an accident today and the situation is getting worse. my wife and i drive our 1 year old child in this car and my wife is pregnant. we cannot afford another vehicle and may not be able to repair this problem as numerous reports on the web indicate that this is a extremely common problem that is very expensive to fix. this problem happens several times each day. *tr
Battery going dead constantly - key getting stuck in the ignition
Chev 2005 cobalt 63000 mile on the clock , i purchased the car in december 2008 . in jan 2010 i was driving on a highway at 50 miles an hour when a chime sounded and the console flashed power steering . i did not feel much difference in the car at that time . this next happened 2 days later. it seemed that turning the car off would rectify the problem. with in the month, the car was experiencing the problem on each drive i took with in the first 15 min. i had a problem while in the school car park that it failed and i lost all control i was able to stop the car with the brakes. almost hitting a small child and the car mounting the curb as i was unable to turn the wheels. i contacted gm in late february when the incident happened and was told the problem is not something they are aware of and that maybe a patch on ice caused the loss of control. it was the following day that while driving on the highway at 50 miles an hour the chime sounded and the console flashed power steering . the car lost all power. it did not stall or run out of gas it quick working . i was unable to get the car to restart. i was lucky that i was in the right hand lane of traffic and was able to pull over to the hard shoulder. the car would not start for over an hour . when the car started i returned home . i had a mechanic look over the vehicle while it was working and no problem other than the failure of the power steering could be found . the car has lost all power and shut down with in 5 mins of the car running . the car will not start . it will be days before the start. it now when it starts, the chime sounds and flash power steering flashes and the car shuts down . this is an unsafe car . the problem is serious and life threatening . to think i could have taken the life of a child if the car had not stopped when it did . the car is sat in the garage i am not able to drive .
I was stopped at a red signal for a few minutes. suddenly, a university of buffalo student hit my car from the rear at full force. he was texting and when he got out of the car he was still texting. he admitted it was his fault because he was not looking at the road and was texting on his phone. i called the police and obtained a police report. the air bags did not work. my mom and i were jolted forward at full force with back and neck trauma. my car stalled on impact of the other car. luckily my foot was on the brake and i did not hit the car in front of me. i had to restart my car and i pulled the car over to the side of the road in order to not block the busy street. i complained that my air bags did not work but i was ignored. also, the ignition switch had turned off the car which i thought was strange. *tr
For about three months my key would get stuck in the ignition. i would have to play with the shifter by moving it back and forth to get the key to come out. well about two weeks ago the shifter broke and i was not able to get the key out at all. i looked this problem up on the internet and to my surprise found it to be a very common problem with the cobalt. i now have to push the release button to get my key out. *tr
My wife owns a 2005 chevy cobalt. she was turning into an intersection when her electric power steering failed without warning and she lost control of the vehicle. this caused her to be unable to complete the turn and was almost hit by the vehicle behind her. luckily the driver behind her was paying attention and was able to avoid a collision. the car had to be taken to the dealer where they had to replace the power steering module and we were advised that if it eventually failed again (which they stated may be only a temporary repair) that we would have to replace the entire steering column. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that every time the vehicle is turned off, the key will not come out of the ignition. it is extremely difficult to get the key out. after a few times of jiggling it the key it will finally come out. this has occurred a total of 5 times. the dealer has not been contacted about this failure. there have been no repairs done to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 49000 and current mileage is 49086. updated 03/12/10. *lj updated 07/12/10*jb
2005 chevy cobalt car. power steering failure, speedometer and rpm needles jump up and down like crazy, engine stalls, when press gas and brake pedals, car jerks forwards and backwards, warning lights on dashboards go on and off. when steering wheel failure happens, very very difficult to turn the wheel, almost locked up. this happens almost every day now and it's almost undrivable. only 55,000 miles on the car. *tr
On january 10th, 2010 our daughter [xxx] 21 yrs. old was killed in a car accident. we received a recall notice from gm in april 2010 on the car a 2005 chevy cobalt for power steering failure. the recall involves removing entire power steering mechanism built by a partially owned toyota factory. i knew the minute i got the news that my daughter was killed so violently and that it did not involve another car that it had to be mechanical failure. it was too late to save our daughter [xxx] but not too late to save others, i contacted gm who sent three representatives to the coparts scrap yard in duryea where the cobalt was stored in july to investigate the car accident. a photographer, an accident reconstruction and a mechanical engineer that flew in from detroit, the objective was to remove the black box, computer from the car and analyze the data. we went to the scrap yard and for the first time saw the wreckage that was once a beautiful red sports car. all the windows including the sun roof were blown out, the cobalt had flipped, rolled, ejecting [xxx] on to the highway where she was run over. we are not sure if [xxx] was killed on impact. the cobalt burst into flames melting the instrument panel, shift, upholstery. at the coparts scrap yard in duryea, myself and my husband [xxx] father saw the car for the first time the cobalt told the story of an extremely violent wreck. i was told by [xxx]that i would know the results from the black box data the next day. when i tried to contact gm through [xxx], miss price that they would not communicate with our family. gm has my property and they will not release the data without us providing proof that the car was defective. this is not possible since they took the most valuable piece of information from the car. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. when the contact started the vehicle he noticed that the it began to stall and suddenly shut off. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that gasoline was pouring into the engine and that the ignition control module needed to be replaced. there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 64000.
I own a 2005 chevy cobalt. this vehicle is my families' only means of family transportation. also, i have very serious medical conditions, including a very high risk pregnancy. the vehicle is my only means of traveling to my doctors and hospitals. at random times my car has shut off while driving, and locked the keys in the ignition. after restarting the vehicle it has trouble staying in drive, and starts to slip into neutral periodically. the problems usually occur while i am driving on the interstate. i have taken the vehicle to the chevy dealership in town on more than one occasion to have the issue fixed. they have changed items within the steering column and told me the problem is fixed. yet, just today, the car shut off again. i cannot explain how important it is that i have a reliable mode of transportation to and from my doctors. i have explained that fact to the dealership, but still have the problem. if i am unable to make it to the doctor of hospital, my medical conditions can take my life, or my unborn child's. i need to have the problem fixed, before i go bankrupt paying for them to fix what they cannot seem to find. *tr
Lots of electrical problems with 2005 chevy cobalt, power steering fails (recall part replaced already), car stalls while driving (dangerous), transmission jerks, check engine and power steering lights come on. all problems are intermittent ,occur without warning, and have been ongoing for at least 6 months. *tr
This scenario has happened numerous times: start engine, engage in driving after giving time for engine to idle down, begin to drive, all gauges go to 0 or blank out, power steering is lost, fuel gauge shows empty when driving with a full tank or less, rpm gauge states 0 when engine is still noticeably running, cid displays "pwr steering" indicating it is out. the only fix? turn off car, unplug battery terminal, wait 5 minutes, attach terminal, drive again. but the check engine light remains on for a day or two. this normally happens once a week and no dealers say there's a problem reading on my ecu/pcm. i'm so fed up with this. my car is a 2005 model and this has never been corrected.
Two months ago, when i put my car in park, i wasn't able to get my key out of the ignition. i'm worried that my car is going to roll down a hill and hit something or someone. also two days ago, my power steering went out when i was driving on the interstate. thankfully i was going straight when this happened. as soon as i turn off my car and turn it back on, the power steering is fine, but if i go a mile or two, all of a sudden it goes out. very very unsafe especially since i have a 2 year old with me. this is very unsafe for everyone!!! both issues could resolve in a huge crash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nothing has been fixed because i have been reading on recalls and i hope i can get this fixed before someone gets injured! *tr
