BMW X1 Problems - Engine Malfunctions And Weaknesses

BMW X1 Problems - Engine Malfunctions And Weaknesses

The BMW X1 (E84), produced from 2009 to 2015, underwent a facelift (LCI) in July 2012. This compact SUV, based on the E90, is the first and last X1 generation with standard rear-wheel drive. It was succeeded by the X1 F48.

BMW X1 Engine Problems - Petrol

The E84's gasoline range includes four-cylinder models sDrive18i (150 hp), xDrive20i/sDrive20i (184 hp), and the inline six-cylinder xDrive25i (218 hp), xDrive28i (245, 258 hp), and the top model xDrive35i (306 hp).

The base gasoline model sDrive18i uses the N46 engine, while the s-/xDrive20i employs the N20. Both series are particularly known for issues with the timing chain, heralded by rattling noises during cold starts and load changes. The N46 frequently has issues with the Valvetronic and VANOS, whereas the N20 occasionally struggles with its oil pump.

BMW X1 Engine Problems - Diesel

The diesel engines used in models sDrive16d, s-/xDrive18d, s-/xDrive20d, xDrive23d, and xDrive25d, notably the N47, are infamous for numerous cases of elongated timing chains. The situation improved towards the end of 2013, but the problem was never completely resolved.

Occasional failures of the coolant thermostat are also noted. At high mileages, typical diesel-related weak points should be considered, including:

  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
  • Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)
  • Turbocharger
  • EGR Valve
  • Injectors

Common BMW X1 Problems

The generously specified oil change interval of 18,641 miles (BMW Longlife) contributes significantly to premature wear of the timing chain. To extend the engine's lifespan, it's advisable to change the engine oil every 6,214 to 9,320 miles, depending on the driving profile.

A faulty universal joint in the steering column, especially in older models, can cause cracking noises when maneuvering or turning the steering wheel fully. Additionally, the wheel bearings wear out relatively quickly and require frequent replacement. In xDrive models, it's important to ensure the transfer case functions properly.

In the automatic transmission, there is a choice between a 6- and 8-speed torque converter automatic. Both are reliable and, with regular transmission flushing and normal driving habits, should last a long time. However, the latter is better suited for long-distance driving due to its lower RPM levels.

BMW X1 Recalls

bmw-x1-e84The BMW E84 has been subject to multiple recalls. The following are the major recall actions affecting a large number of vehicles:

  • According to the KBA, a fault in the electronic control unit of the electromechanical power steering (EPS) could lead to a loss of power steering assistance in models up to and including 2012.
  • In models produced from December 2010 to June 2011, there could be a breakage of the flexible joint disc on the drive shaft, leading to the vehicle breaking down.
  • A lack of lubrication from faulty camshafts in the vacuum pump could cause the brake booster to fail in E84 models with the four-cylinder gasoline N20 engine, produced from June 2012 to August 2013.
  • Four-cylinder diesel models produced from March 2011 onwards are at risk of fire due to issues with the EGR module.

Tip: Detailed information about the recalls can be obtained from the KBA or ADAC using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine if your vehicle is affected by these recalls.

Our Tip: Opt for Six-Cylinder Over Four-Cylinder

The E84 belongs to a generation of BMW models plagued with significant issues. Therefore, it's especially important to look for a vehicle with a comprehensive service history from the first or second owner. Prices start at around $6,000 in the usual used car markets.
