I own a 2000 volvo s-80. while proceeding through automatic car wash, the sunroof shattered during the blower/dryer operation. car wash manager informed me that these models have a propensity to break at the same spot in the car wash process. he stated that volvo replaces the sunroof under warranty, but when i contacted volvo, they denied any knowledge of the problem. *tr
My wife was driving the vehicle and i was a passenger. when attempting to open the sunroof and when it was about 1/4 opened, a steel bar, about 26 inches in length came out of the roof opening and hit my wife on the right side of her head while she was driving. the glass did not break only the metal bar that was glued to the glass came loose and fell out. had she turned her head in my direction, the bar could have caused serious injury and even could have hit one of her eyes. this metal bar was attached to the leading edge of the glass. no accident or serious injury other than bruised skin occurred. on nov 29th the car was taken to the dealer to be evaluated and spoke to the service manager who said he never heard of this happening before. when he called a mechanic over to ask his opinion, the mechanic stated that they just replaced a sunroof glass on a similar car the previous week with the same problem. the service manager only said that if the glass was replaced, it would be very costly. no offer was made to repair or replace with a better part. this incident could have caused a serious or deadly accident. *tr

Failed climate control unit driving to work. air bag system sevice urgent (in info. box) came on and still on. eat belt tighten for no reason.*ak
Continuous air bag warning light. car dies on road. get fixed, then air bag light comes on again. ran into a person who volvo airbags deployed without reason and she was injured. after exiting highway, car "died." i am lucky to be alive as the wheel stiffened up & i had to rely on the parking brake to slow down. had to get a "jump start" to get home. car is unsafe. returned to volvo. also had steering wheel that shakes at higway speeds, alarm that went off while driving, & wouldn't start, remote door opener doesn't always work, service engine light flickered on & off -- said it was an emissions problem.
In october 2001 while driving at night headlights went off. the following day while crossing the street the car stalled. approximately ten minutes later was able to start the car, and at the same time headlights came on. car was under warranty, and the mechanic repaired the throttle body & gasket. in june 2004 car stalled again. replaced sway links and program down load $338.19. in december 2004, car staled on the road again. it was towed to the repair shop, they replaced the throttle body, mass air flow, mfi module- at cost of 2098.96. the contact did not take this car on any longer trip. due to stalling on the road, frequent loss of headlights and numerous other mechanical problems the contact believed this car was unsafe to be on the road. 11-16 e-mail ; first time the car would not respond to the accelerator pedal. stopped turn the car off and tried to restart it again. after few attempts the contact was able to restart the car. *ak the right door mirror failed and the abs control module was replaced. updated 02/07/06. *jb
Residence shown is in ny where i am currently located and can be contacted.; i am florida homeowner at 6366 pebble creek way,,boynton beach,fl 33437 during winter months. car color is metallic moondust with interior color "sand". reflective glare on windhield from dash is critical safety hazard. driving in bright sunlight or dappled shade/sun is impossible. have had to slow down to 5 mph on interstate, or even stop at times, because of total inability to see. mfr representative pat sacus at exec offices (1 2017674737 ext 1976) rockleigh,nj indicates they can,and will, do nothing despite acknowledging the possible serious safety impications. in twenty or more cars i have owned, have never had such a severe safety concern in need of correction. sun glasses do not help, nor does placing a piece of dark cloth on dashboard. according to ms sacus, all previous volvos had black(only) dash boards, but colors were installed in response to consumer desires. presumably, the probl;em exists only with the lighter colors, but there is no question in my mind that a very serious accident awaits. similarly, an additional safety hazard exists on the dash board and instrument panel. the dark background and l.e.d. lighting is almost invisible during daylight (although fine at night). in order to read items on dash such as radio station in tune or , message board, eyes must be taken off the road and one must actually bend down to look at the panel closely in order to see when in bright light. a hazard indeed, but one i have learned to live with....i just do not try to read radio station info. i urge testing of this auto (in the color and dash color specified)while driving into bright sunlight. however, i urge your tester to drive slowly!! also, please test in dappled bright sun/shade; or drive from sunlight into a darkened garage. one is almost totally blind. volvo has shot themselves in the foot with a quality automobile that is virtually undriveable in daylight sunshine.*ak
