Driving around city street. jetta began to lose power and the glow bulb indicator began flashing. after turning off and restarting the car i drove for another two blocks then the glow bulb indicator came on again paired this time with the red battery indicator. after that the car rolled to a stop and would not turn back over. *tr
Traveling south on hwy 101, 55 miles north of san louis obispo, ca at an approximate speed of 65 mph,the engine lost power, and the vehicle came to a stop. the engine could not be restarted. the vehicle was towed to perry volkswagen in san louis obispo, ca. the vehicle was diagnosed as a failure of the high pressure fuel pump sending slivers of metal throughout the fuel system. the service representative stated that this was not an uncommon issue with the turbo diesel model and that they currently have two vehicles in their shop with the same issue. we have always fueled the vehicle with lower sulfur diesel fuel in california and have never fueled the vehicle with gasoline. vw previously had a recall to install a "device" to prevent fueling with gas nozzles from the service station pumps. the service representative indicated that vw knows of the problem and will fix the vehicle at no charge. we also have a 2009 vw jetta tdi that experienced the same problem in june 2014, which was repaired at commonwealth vw in santa ana, ca. i am reporting that incident in a separate report. it is my position that vw should be recalling all of these vehicles to fix the problem before it happens rather than fixing one at a time after it happens; exposing consumers to potential fatal accidents on highways. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that the fuel pump failed while driving at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the fuel system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 33,700.
Was driving my 2010 vw jetta sportwagon tdi at approx. 55 miles per hour when my service engine light came on and glow plugs started flashing. car began to buck as if not getting any fuel through the system. car stalled out on highway within a minute of the service lights flashing and will not restart. luckily the cars behind me barely avoided hitting me as there was zero warning. had to be towed to my garage, expect diagnosis tomorrow but after reading up on other complaints i am pretty sure they will report back that it is a hpfp issue and the system will need replaced. *tr

Car in shop for approximately 11 days. although car out of warranty, fixed with authorization from vw of america as a "warranty" repair at no charge to me. bad fuel not an issue (tested). hpfp and all major fuel systems/lines cleaned or replaced. high pressure fuel pump failure.
The car lost power and could not drive faster than 20 mph, drove if off of the highway and into a gas station where the car died and could not be restarted. towed it to a volkswagen dealer, they reported it was a fuel pump failure and that the entire fuel system would need to be replaced at a cost of $6100.00. *js
Upon changing the fuel filter, the mechanic noted that there were visible metal particles in the filter housing. this is the second fuel filter change to show metal filings. two different certified mechanics noted that this is a symptom of high pressure fuel pump failure and if the fuel pump fails at high speed it could be a safety hazard. volkswagen refuses to proactively replace the failing fuel pump. *js
Vehicle will stall going from reverse to drive or from park to drive. also from while accelerating there is sputtering that i need to release the accelerator and then apply again to keep it from stalling. *tr
Summary: while driving on the highway in the high speed lane in traffic at night in a unlit area of rt 84 in willington ct. going to pickup my teenage daughter and her 2 friends after a concert car without warning lost all power. i had to navigate through 3 lanes of traffic without power steering or power brakes to the breakdown lane. i made it to the breakdown lane but ended up close to the road in a rural dark unlit part of the highway. the car would not restart and had to be left leaving me stranded late at night and i am disabled with diabetes and several other serious health issues.i could feel my blood sugar was dangerously low with nothing in the car to stablize it. i had problems contacting help because of the time of night and lack of cell service in that area. upon further investigation it was found that the problem with the car was the high pressure fuel pump exploded sending metal throughout the entire fuel system. i think it is unaceptable for this to happen without warning. my daughter and 2 friends were also stranded 60 miles away in worcester ma.vw is aware of many thousand of this same event but won't recall. i think the ntsb should demand a recall. i am sure people have died and been seriously injured in similar events. cost of repair $11,000.00 or more to replace the entire fuel system.i called vwoa for support and they said they wouldn't cover the repair. i then called the dealer who sold me the car vw of hartford ct. and they were rude as they told me i would have to pay for any repairs.i am low income and with my health issues i thought this car would outlive me. i don't have the money to fix this and i shouldn't have to. vw is covering these issues even out of warranty to quiet the ntsb but won't cover mine the poor disabled man. *js

I had what appears to be a fuel system failure. i was turning left after stopping at a red light. i was traveling at @20 mph. 100 yards down the block, the engine lost power, the check engine light came on, as did the diesel coil icon. the car was dead instantly. there was no warning, no gradual failure, no time to get out of the street. please note, i had my vehicle regularly serviced at the vw dealership, including installing the fuel intake coupling that was the subject of a recall about a year ago. the service manager said there was some bad diesel going around in the county where i live, but when pressed admitted the bad fuel had not been traced to any particular brand, but had appeared randomly. he did say that my entire fuel system would be replaced on vw's dime, even though i am long out of warranty, and that it could take 2 days to a week to perform the service. there is nothing on vw's website about this problem, nor are there reports of bad diesel fuel in the county. the blogosphere has reports of problems in the design of the high pressure fuel pump that causes it to break down and shed bits of metal throughout the fuel system. i am very lucky that this happened at 20 mph on a town street in the middle of the morning and not at 65 mph on a highway with lots of traffic. i am glad vw is covering the cost of repairs. but i have personally recommended this otherwise terrific car to many people, some of whom have chosen to buy it. i am now worried that someone might get dead because of this, especially since vw is evidently only correcting this design problem after an entire system failure. i am also unable to confirm that vw engineers have redesigned the fuel pump that they are in theory installing in my car as a repair. do you have any information? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. the vehicle did restart after a few attempts, however, the vehicle did not accelerate above 50 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the number two fuel injector needed to be replaced. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 11v490000( fuel system, diesel). the vin was not included and the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

2010 jetta sportswagen tdi april 2012 - 50k miles - fuel pump system failure. vw found metal shards throughout whole system, all had to be replaced. cost over $7,000 paid for by vw. fuel was tested and found no fault of driver (i.e., no gas). faulty fuel pump. february 2014 - 97k miles - second fuel pump failure. same issue, metal shards through entire system, all had to be replaced. cost over $8,000 paid for by vw. fuel tested again and no fault of driver. had to tow our car home from vacation several hours away. there should be a recall for these cars. it's dangerous to have your car stop working all the sudden, and it will leave you stranded. not to mention, you can anticipate it happening every 50,000 miles. not a dependable car. *tr
2010 jetta tdi (diesel) stalled while driving slowly on residential roads and would not start again. car was towed to dealership where metal fragments were found throughout fuel system due to failure of high pressure fuel pump (hpfp). vw of america paid for entire fuel system to be replaced (~$7000). owner is sure that vehicle was filled with correct fuel. *tr
I was driving down the street when dash lights came on...within minutes i lost power and eventually my car shut down. my hpfp went out and has sent shards of metal throughout the system. apparently to the grand total of at least $7500 possibly more. i've been reading and see this is an is with the vw tdi motors i drive a 2010 vw jetta tdi... at this point the fuel system needs flushed and or replaced i'm questioning the condition of the rest of my motor if metal pieces have been flushed through it. *tr
My husband brought my car in for routine maintenance to the vw dealer in feb 2014 including a timing belt change. he also discussed a "hard start- no start" issue i was having. the service representative said to make sure the glow plug light goes out before trying to start (i've been carefully watching with each start since that time and there is no relationship between the light and the vehicle starting issue). today (5 march 2014), i had a repeat of the same problem i've had 3 times this winter: car starts fine in the am even during below zero temperatures, i drive to work and let it sit for 3-8 hours. car will not start, regardless of air temp. it takes 4-8 attempts to start the car including "pumping the fuel" pedal. i believe this is a known as a "hard start- no start" intercooler issue and is addressed in the following vw technical bulletin -- https://drive.google.com/file/d/0b162-sx2nn5luzbidg9hcvr6nuu/edit?usp=sharing. *tr
Note to engineers investigating 2009-2010 vw jetta high pressure fuel pumps: i am a semi-retired automotive engineer that investigates insurance claims. i currently have one of these issues with metal flakes appearing on the filtering screen for the hpfp located under the pressure transducer. obviously, this issue has been building for some time in order for this amount of metal flakes to accumulate (vehicle would barely run--idled to dealer). this is not affecting just vw's. i see the same issue in dodge, gm, ford, audi, and many other models. the problem lies with the ultra-low sulfur fuel. sulfur is a lubricating molecule under high pressure applications. problems began cropping up after switch to ultra-low sulfur fuel. the older low-sulfur fuel would still lubricate. the fix is to either harden the pump faces to a much higher degree such that no lubrication is required. or, add a 5% mix of biodiesel to the petrodiesel to restore lubricity to fuel. some additives also accomplish this same lubricating effect. i have now handled around 40 cases of differing makes where this same issue crops up. however, i only see the cases where an insurance claim is filed with an insurance carrier. in all cases, i go back to the station where the customer fuels the vehicle to obtain sample. this is to rule out contaminated fuel being dispensed at a filling station. so far, no contamination found from filling stations. *tr

I was driving down a residential street, and suddenly the engine light came on and the car completely shut down. i was able restart the engine, but could only drive for about 5 yards before the car stalled out again. dealership says this is a fuel pump failure, and i see many reports of this with the jetta tdi model for 2010.

Vehicle failed after it was driven 200 miles post fill-up. the car was filled with diesel fuel in the morning prior to commuting into st. petersburg and back to st. cloud, fl, 206 miles round trip. we went out to start the car again and it would not start, and said service now. my wife, who drove the vehicle during the day reported no power losses or irregular behavior while she was driving the vehicle. vehicle was towed to david maus vw where the tech found metal shavings in the fuel filter and diagnosed as high pressure fuel pump failure due to contaminated fuel. we have receipt from fill up in the morning showing diesel fuel purchase. *tr

We bought our 2010 volkswagen jetta at jeremy franklin in kansas city as of december 2012 with approximately 33000 miles. in february of 2013 while driving on the highway at 65 mph the car suddenly shuts down with no warning. we towed the car to a lot and the car sat for a few days and then started again. we then drove the car without incident for another week, then while on the highway the car suddenly shuts down again. the car again sat for a couple of days and then started again. we took our car back to the dealership and was told they couldnt find the source of the issues and we were instructed to take the car home. we did and found ourselves again stranded at a grocery store parking lot this time. we finally towed the car back to the dealership where we purchased the car and they held the car for two and half weeks and again could not find the source of the issue. no issues were showing up on their computerized diagnostic system. the dealership finally towed the car to volkswagen, where they found the fuel pump and crank were bad on the car. *tr
The vehicle had driven fine all day when all of a sudden when i pulled up to a stop sign, the car died like it was running out of gas. i was in the middle of a the road at the stop sign, the car managed to start again and drive another couple hundred feet to get it off to the side of the road. luckily i made it just past a set of rail road tracks. the car did not start again and had to be towed. the vehicle had its entire fuel injection pump system replaced along with the sensors. mechanics have told me that the pumps should last the life of the engine. *tr
Car stalled out at the traffic stop light. all attempts to restart failed. car was then towed to the nearest garage. subsquent tested and diagnosed by mechanics showed fuel system failed to pressurized. the mechanics suspected it might be due to fuel contamination. checked receipt to verify that the previous fill up (at the shell station) was indeed diesel. called the station to inform of incident, and to inquire if anyone else informed of similar incident; none, was the reply from the gas station manager. currently, the car is inoperable, and the vw dealer service station recommend replacing injectors, and all the fuel pumps. *tr
Car failed to start was towed to hallmark vw who informed us that it was a hpfp failure. research suggests this is an ongoing issue as nhtsa does have an investigation into this issue. awaiting fuel sample from analysis but have receipt from fuel in vehicle stating "diesel fuel". *tr
While driving at 25 mph near my home glow plug warning light came on. stopped car. then restarted and glow plug light stayed on. shortly thereafter check engine light came on. i drove the short distance home and noticed severe loss of power. did not drive the vehicle again and at first opportunity had vehicle towed to local dealership. according to dealer vehicle suffered a catastrophic failure of fuel system and needs to be completely replaced; this includes but not limited to fuel rail, high pressure fuel pump, all pipes and hoses, subsidiary fuel pumps, and high pressure cleaning of fuel tank. volkswagen has accepted responsibility under limited powertrain warranty. *tr
My wife was trying to merge onto a busy highway and the motor died. she was able to coast to the breakdown lane. i feel this could have been a deadly had it happened in front of a loaded gasoline tanker truck or someplace where there was no breakdown lane or in the high speed lane. this should be a safety recall that vw should take seriously. *tr

On friday jan. 11, 2013, the vehicle (2010 vw jetta tdi) in question was traveling on an expressway at a speed of approximately 50 mph when suddenly the glow plug light and check engine warnings turned on the vehicle display and shortly afterwards the engine stalled. the vehicle stalled in the middle of the road but no accident occurred because there was no other traffic at the time of failure. attempts to start the engine failed.vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road. vehicle was towed to service location to be diagnosed and results were indicative that the fuel pump failed catastrophically rendering the vehicle inoperable. excessive metal shards were evident on the fuel filter. vehicle has not yet been repaired pending a response from the manufacturer. same vehicle stalled in traffic after bought new at approximately 8000 miles on the odometer in 2010 but engine was able to be restarted. volkswagen dealership service department performed diagnostic for the 1st stalling incident and said there was nothing wrong. no service was performed to check fuel system at that time. *tr
The vehicle was valet parked. the valet attendant reported that the vehicle shut down as she was driving it up the ramp out of the parking garage. she also reported a knocking sound and that the "check engine" light was on. upon entering the vehicle, i was unable to start it. i had the vehicle towed to the vw dealership. they told me that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and that they had seen other cars coming in with this same problem. service department paperwork states: "defective high pressure pump-metal in system" and "found fault p0191." vehicle speed at time of incident is estimated based on valet attendant's description. *tr
Happened last night, with my 6 yr old daughter in the car, and wife driving on the freeway! check engine light, and fuel injector/glow plug light blinking, car shutdown, but fortunately was able to pull off to the side but still next to freeway on/off ramp. car would crank over but not start. called aaa tow to vw dealer where the car was purchased. i drove the car earlier that morning on a fairly long trip (over 100 miles), and started noticing the fuel economy wasn't as good as i normally would get (40 mpg), but it was raining heavy that morning so that's what i attributed it to, but only seeing 30 mpg after all freeway driving was suspicious to me. vw dealer said the high pressure fuel pump failed and contaminated the entire diesel fuel system and all the parts will need to be replaced and fuel system cleaned out. *tr
The car's engine stopped functioning while driving on i-80 on the way to work in the morning. i was in the far left lane and had to use hazard signals to pull the car to the right shoulder during busy commute traffic. the engine glow light indicator and the malfunction indicator lamp were on during the failure. the car did not restart and a tow truck took the vehicle to the nearest dealership. metal debris was present inside of the fuel pump and fuel filter. *tr

Had the vehicle serviced at the 40,000 mile interval. metal flakes were found in the fuel filter. i was told of your investigation of the hpfp problems that this model has been demonstrating. i would like to file this information with you in case this fuel pump fails. i understand that vw has been reluctant to honor their warranty. *tr
Four failures in four months.this is a repeat failure with my diesel fuel system. i previously reported the first two occurrences on this site. volkswagen of america has now replaced my entire fuel system including the tank. this was only after repeated requests after four times to dealer for service for this issue--total time my car was in for service was 45 days over july through oct. 19, 2012. i was aware of the fuel pump failure after researching glow plug light flashing tdi and limp mode immediately upon the first time the lights started to flash on july 6, 2012. i went to dealer and they could not diagnose the problem. july 17 it happened again they found metal shards in the fuel filter and replaced the fuel pump...i requested they replace entire fuel system, explaining to the voa customer care person that metal shards go throughout the system, denied. picked up my car on july 31 (after 15 days in shop). on sept. 17 warning lights/limpmode again. i again request they replace entire fuel system, no, only the pump in the tank. pick up car sept. 28 (12 days in shop). four days later on oct. 2, again warning lights/limp mode. back to dealer, again request vofa to replace fuel system. no only the fuel rail. dealer replaces fuel rail, takes for a test drive and it failed on them. finally voa agrees to replace the fuel system...but not the tank. only clean the tank. i request new tank, volkswagen of american tells me i can go inspect the cleaned out tank...how will i see inside the tank...voa cust service tells me then i better bring a flash light. mind you i was dealing with the same cust serv rep [xxx] the entire time. they decide to replace tank. pick car up oct. 19 (18 days in shop). waiting for it to happen again. only a matter of time and hope i don't get in accident due to it. very stressful. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr
Stopped and filled up vehicle with diesel fuel around 5 pm 9/16/12. drove approximately 10.2 miles and the vehicle engine stopped. exactly at that moment, the warning 'check engine now' indicator phrase was displayed in the display panel. it stayed on for a few seconds, and then turned off, and there were no indicator lights on at all that would indicate low oil pressure or fuel or any other symptom. we had enough moment to roll to the shoulder of the road to get out of the way of traffic. electric was working as we were able to roll down the windows of the car, the radio was on. put the car in park and tried starting the engine. it would crank over, but never catch. even though we had just put in 13.5 gallons of fuel, the car behaved as though it were out of fuel. i checked the receipt to verify diesel was put into the car. i also called the chevron station where i purchased the fuel to ask if there had been a mistake or if they'd had other reports of bad diesel from their station. the owner of the station called me back and let me know that he ran lab tests to determine whether or not their was contamination in the fuel lines (either from gasoline or from water), and he said there had not been. called the volkswagen roadside assistance and they sent out a tow truck to collect the car and take it back to the dealership. *tr
I was driving on the highway and experienced an extreme loss of power and flashing yellow check engine light. after stopping the vehicle stalled and wouldn't restart on multiple attempts. brought vehicle to dealer who says it needs the entire fuel system replaced, due to metal shavings in the fuel delivery system caused by a bad hpfp. originally vw said it would be covered under warranty, but now are citing biofuel as a reason for the failure. i have used only b5 which complies with vw's standard policies but they have stated they believe the reason to be owner negligence and have a higher blend than b5. i only put in what the fuel stations tell me they have, i don't test my fuel before i put it in. this seems like a smoke and mirrors play by vw, attempting not to pay the claim and trying to have me shell out $10k for the repair. seems pretty ridiculous for a 2year old vehicle with such low mileage. *tr
The vehicle stalled in traffic. the vehicle would not restart. it had to be towed to a vw dealer. the vw dealer told me the pump disintegrated and sent metal fines through the fuel rail clogging the fuel injectors. the dealer claims it was due to the diesel fuel being contaminated. i have documentation that only diesel fuel was in the tank (fuel receipts). the dealer did not do a lab analysis on my fuel. they said it didn't smell right. *tr
I was traveling approximately 45 mph in my 2010 jetta tdi when the car suddenly stalled without any warning. i was unable to navigate the car to a safe place and was stuck in the middle two lanes. i was unable to restart the car and had to wait 40min for a tow truck to arrive. the dealership indicated that the fuel pump failed. they are also having to replace the fuel distributor and filter. *tr
