Jetta hpfp. in early 2013 my jetta tdi had to have the fuel pump replaced due to a defect in the materials. the issue has just happened again, same symptoms. only this time volkswagen is claiming the fuel pump failed due to contiminated fuel. my insurance company denies that fact and is pointing the finger at vw for a faulty fuel pump. the repair is upwards of $5000 and volkswagen is not offering to cover it. my car is now sitting in disassembled state at the dealership while i am paying for a rental car and my insurance company and vw play a ping-pong match of passing the blame. *js

When making a left hand turn car stalls. dash panel lights go out and battery warning light flashes and car shuts off. car has to be completely stopped,ignition turned to the off position and put into park, before it can restart. very dangerous when driving in high traffic areas. you don't have time to pull over. the car just dies! *tr

I was driving at highway speed and the car immediately lost power. a semi almost rear ended me because i lost speed so quickly. i lost control of the vehicle and had to fight the steering wheel to get off the road as the steering got extremely tight. i had the vehicle towed to the dealer and they identified the high pressure fuel pump as failing. *js

Vehicle staled out with complete loss of power, would not restart. had car towed to vw dealer, and it took 8 days for them to fix. the high pressure fuel pump failed and contaminated the whole system. it was covered under the warranty but i was lucky i was not on the highway. if the 2010 jetta wasn't under warranty it would have cost $4660.22 to fix it.

I have had 3 different bouts with my jetta stalling seemingly randomly at highway speeds. each set of incidents resulted in a service trip to the vw dealership for repairs. for the first incident the vehicle was under the 60,000 mile warranty and an expensive repair was covered under warrant. the second series of incidents occurred about 6 months later, after the car was no longer under warranty and the repair - replacement of the cam shaft position sensor. another series of incidents has just begun and i'm headed to the dealership again. all 3 series of incidents had the same symptoms: 1) the car intermittently stalling unexpectedly during acceleration and 2) slow chugging start occasionally when the car is warmed up. *jb

Glow plug light came lit on dash and said "service engine immediately." engine then lost power on interstate (dangerous). when re-cranked, engine was sluggish and would not accelerate above 40mph. vw service said it was due to a faulty fuel pump. *tr

Driving on interstate at 70mph. engine glowplug light and main failure light came on and engine quit. dealer advised failure was due to high pressure fuel pump failure. *js

While driving in the city, the car diesel engine started to loose power and vibrate. the car stalled in the middle of the road with traffic having to stop behind us. we managed to move aside and push the car to a low traffic road. we towed the car to the nearest garage. an initial inspection indicated that the fuel system was damaged, reason for sending it to the vw dealer at clear lake. the dealer told us that vw of america is considering helping us with the repair, quoted between $7,200 to $10,000, and had instructed them to order the parts. today, however, it was suggested that i could approve the repairs for them to start working on the car and no response was available from the manufacturer. the prognosis is a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump that released metallic debris into the fuel system. at the moment of the incident the car was barely 15 months old, with 43k miles and properly maintained. it does not go through heavy traffic and only ridden on regular roads. to my question about how could i have avoided this problem, the vw service rep stated that it was a simple mechanical failure. *tr

Over a week and 200 miles after filling up. with diesel. the car suffered a fuel system failure resulting in a complete engine shutdown at 45 mph with no restart. this included a reduction in steering and braking power. vw dealer still has the car as of 3/27/2012. claiming high levels of gasoline in the fuel. when asked how they determined the presence of gasoline they said they could see it in a sample. no real analysis. just visual assessment. opened an incident report with fuel supplier and they say it is most likely a difference in seasonal mixes of diesel fuels. vw says they are going to repair the car for free then void my warranty on the fuel system. *tr

2010 jetta wagon tdi (35,500 miles); wouldn't start in am before work. would crank but not turn over. had it towed to dealership. said "fuel was contaminated" and that the tech saw specks of something throughout the fuel system. they tried the line on me of "you must have mixed it with gas". i bought a diesel b/c i wanted to drive a diesel. i didn't mix them up. not to mention i had already drove through half a tank of fuel before this incident. vw agreed to warranty the repair however at $7500. what happens next time? am i out $8k? i have the top tier "platinum" warranty but will it be covered for "contamination?" my vw service dept couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me anything. i called vwof america customer service line to have a case opened or get any information. i was called back in 24hrs by a woman that said, "it's not vw's fault you need to call the gas station b/c it was contaminated fuel". i find it odd that vw is covering the cost yet it's "not their fault". what company honors a warranty when they are not responsible for the damage? so where does that leave tdi owners? are we supposed to carry around a chemistry set and test the fuel before we fill up? if i want to take a trip with my car i guess i can't now b/c i may not be able to find a "brand name" like shell or exxon. i think i have to sell the car. kbb trade-in is $20,000. i wonder what vw will offer me on a trade of my tdi...... my car is still in the shop a week later, i have a loaner, i'm terrified to pick up the car and tomorrow it doesn't start again. *tr

The high pressure fuel pump on my 2010 vw tdi failed on the highway causing a sudden loss of power. the vehicles was towed to the dealership where they confirmed that the injector pump was the problem. *kb

Accelerating at 40mph car began to run rough and lose power. engine glow plug light began to flash. car stalled and could not be restarted. car towed to hiley volkwagen in arlington texas. service department states that high pressure fuel pump disintegrated and that metal particles were found in the fuel lines. will be rebuilding the fuel system and replacing the fuel tank. *tr

First occurrence my wife was driving , she called me and said the car was going about 10 or 20 mph. i asked were there any warning lights on the dash that were on she said the service engine soon was on and that was all. she made it home , called the local dealership. we carried the car they said they changed the fuel filter. brought the car home ,it ran fine for a few days then the same thing happened again. the next day i contacted volkswagen assistance for them to tow it to the shop. the car was under the carport , i was going to push it out to go on the tow truck , but it started and ran fine with the exception of the engine light being on. the wrecker carried it to the shop. the dealership called me onjan. 03 2012 and told me the fuel was contaminated with water, and they would have to flush the system($500_+). they called back the next day and said they would have to replace everything in fuel system($8500 +). after some research my car is doing the same things as if the fuel pump had failed. this is a very common thing from what i"ve read on this motor . that's where were at now. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that that the fuel line and the fuel injector was cracked. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where repairs were made to the vehicle under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v490000 (fuel system, diesel) but the repair did not rectify the fuel line issue. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they would not take the liability for replacing any additional parts. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure mileage was 28,000 and the current mileage was 29,000. kmj

Car engine died on the highway. coasted to side of road. high pressure fuel pump failure. entire fuel system being replaced. metal shavings throughout fuel system. *kb

Diesel engine high pressure fuel pump failed while i was trying to pass another car on the freeway. glow plug light when on and car immediately went into limp mode, dropping down to 35-40mph, making me unable to follow through on passing the other car and forcing vehicle behind me to brake. was able to drive slowly 1/4 mile to exit, where the car stalled and would not restart. towed to vw service center, where they found metal particles throughout fuel system. high pressure fuel pump had failed catastrophically, destroying fuel system and requiring entire fuel system replacement. *tt

2010 vw jetta tdi with roughly 35,650 miles. while driving up the on-ramp to enter the interstate, glow plug dash light came on and warned to "check engine now." within 20 seconds, the car lost all power, and luckily i was able to coast over to the shoulder of the interstate (with drivers flying by at 65+mph at 9:45pm). vehicle would not restart and had to be towed to the vw dealership. service rep claimed "fuel contamination," with metal shards all throughout the fuel system. entire fuel system has to be replaced ($10,000 repair) with equivalent, new parts. according to vw service technicians, the parts have not been updated despite vw's knowledge of this problem. as a result, "fuel contamination" could happen again, and the car could shut off while driving at any time without notice. this is a very serious safety concern. luckily, because i was driving at night, there was not a lot of congestion on the road. had this happened during rush hour, there very likely would have been a severe accident. vw claims the problem is a result of the poor quality of american diesel fuel supply, saying the tdis are designed in germany to run on 100% diesel that's found in europe. if this is the case, why are they selling german designed cars in the united states that doesn't have fuel supplies that are 100% diesel? volkswagen needs to issue a recall of the 2009/2010 jetta tdi. *tr

High pressure fuel pump failed during routine driving in a residential area. car was able to cost to a safe location away from traffic. *tr

Motor lost most power but was able to go 10-15mph to get to end of trip. check engine light came on and glow plug light flashed on & off. called vw and they scheduled appt for next day, said it was ok to drive in. began drive home on major city street. while driving, the engine died and would not restart. car stalled in left lane blocking rush hour traffic. the driver of the following car was able to stop traffic enough to allow us to push the dead vw off the road to the right. cars were attempting to pass us as we pushed it to the side. called vw and they sent a tow truck. diagnostics the next day found metal in the tdi diesel high pressure fuel pump. fuel system is to be replaced under warranty. *tr

The vehicle glow point warning light started flashing and vehicle lost power. restarted and drove home with no further indicator lights. restarted the following morning, check engine and glow point warning lights illuminated (glow point was flashing). car lost power to the point that when the tow truck came the car could not climb the ramp under its own power though engine was running. vw dealer reports that fuel pump disintegrated and sent metal fragments into fuel system damaging components of system but not entering engine. *tr

While traveling at 70 mph on cruise control glow-plug light flashed solid, complete loss of power, engine stalled, and no restart. dealer stated catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump contaminated entire fuel system and would need to be replaced.

Vehicle was going at 25 mph when it started losing power. it stopped barely few feet after the intersection. engine would not start. vehicle was towed away to the nearest vw dealership. after investigation dealership says that they found traces of gasoline in the fuel pump and gasoline has destroyed the fuel system. i showed them my last three receipts as proof that i always put diesel in the vehicle. car is at the dealership since 01-aug-2011. they said they have to replace the whole system. initially they have quoted about $4800 + labor but later on they agreed to fix it under warranty , car is only 18 months old and has 1800 miles. i am concerned that this may happen again as i still would end up going to the same diesel stations for filling and if they are contaminated as dealer says i may end up with a dead engine again.

The first time incident happened car almost stalled and check engine light came on an car had loss of power car was taken to cooley vw they told me at first that it was a tube from the turbo had to be replaced and the part was on back order so i called back a week later an then they told me that the emission system was plugged an it had to replace the whole exhaust system that took them a month to complete an they put 100 mile on the car because they couldn't get the check engine light to go out then they told me that the car need an emission ecm they repaired the car i picked the car up i didn't even go 1 mile from dealer an the car almost stalled on me again so i checked the fuel filter for my self and found that it was rusting inside filter housing an the housing was full of gold metal filling i replaced the 92 dollar fuel filter myself because the dealer didn't even check the filter the second time the incident happened i was driving down i91 in vermont an the car just completely died while i was driving at 68 mph i then had the car towed over 100 miles to capital city's vw they had told me that the exhaust emission were plugged an that they had to change the exhaust system again there was about 4000 miles on it since cooley did it then the dealer called me back an said that there was rust and the metal fillings in the filter housing again the filter barely 2000 miles on the filter capital city's then told me that the whole fuel system had to be changed they changed the tank pumps line injector rail injectors its been 2000 miles since they did that and now the car is acting up again it has almost died several time again i don't wanna take it back to dealer if they are goin to keep putting the same inferior part back on 3 times with in 10000 miles is ridiculous i am lookin myself for a pump that will work since vw doesn't want to fix it right. *tr

Was traveling on a city block in san francisco when the engine light went on. there was a slight power surge but no stall. driving into the next city block the car completely died and i pulled over to curb. unable to start again. car was towed to vw dealer. was told the fuel pump in the tank had malfunctioned, and contaminated the fuel tank. entire fuel pump, tank, system is being replaced under warranty.

This vehicle has experienced continual problems with engine shuddering and stalling. mostly, while in 2nd , 3rd or 4th gear, early on into a trip the engine will suddenly decelerate and in some case stall out completely. it is as if there is a sudden loss in fuel getting to the engine. this started soon after purchasing the car. it has been into the dealership numerous (6 or 7) times for this warranty issue, including extended stay periods of seven and ten days. first they faulted my fuel, then they replaced the fuel pump, then they have done other work and replaced components, but claim they can not make the car fail as i have reported. they claim to have alerted vw and had a vw technical advisers look at this car. they refuse to do any additional warranty work on the car for this issue since they can not diagnose it. i have kept a log of these failures since my last servicing. between 10/22/2010 to 3/12/2011 this vehicle has had 19 of these failure events. they usually occur when the outside air temperature is above 32 degrees fahrenheit. the vehicle is still under warranty (28,500 miles on the odometer). i am finding other owners experiencing similar problems. please help.

Vehicle hesitates, usually at lower speeds, but sometimes at highway speeds, and stalled completely in intersections twice. initially this was most often on a cold start, within the first 5-10 miles, but not consistently. it might do it once a day, once a week, or once every two or three weeks. i believe the problem to be fuel system related and not transmission. i have reported the problem to dealer with each service call (3 so far, i have 20k miles to date). dealer initially suggested bad fuel and to buy only chevron, but there is no correlation between fuel source and hesitation, no evidence of water in fuel filter, etc., and i usually purchase chevron fuel. dealer reported being unable to identify the problem without "codes". vehicle hesitated again (11/25/11), within one block of driving after 20k service. i immediately returned to dealer, and they were still unable to diagnose. dealer has kept the car and contacted vw usa tech service, but remains unable to diagnose as of 12/2/11. my daughter purchased the same car 3 days after i bought mine and has the same problem (30k miles so far), but has not stalled in an intersection - yet. this is not our inability to drive a stick transmission - both of us have owned diesel jettas with manual transmissions for 10 years prior to our recent purchases. i contacted vw usa and have received the same message - unless they can diagnose a specific problem, there is nothing they can do, but they did suggest going to a different dealer. vw did perform a fuel line recall with my last service, but the hesitation remains. there are a number of reports of this problem on the web, but vw is unwilling to attempt any repair without a solid diagnosis. stalling in intersections and hesitation while driving are unacceptable performance for a car. period. i hope you can help. evenings or early ams are best time to call. *tr

Glow plug light came on, then engine light, car wouldn't accelerate when i stepped on the gas. had to pull off the interstate. but made it home slowly. car towed to dealer. dealer says its bad fuel. dept of consumer protection checked stations. no problems found with fuel. car needs whole new fuel system-8k to repair. vw won't fix. told me to call insurance company. car still at dealer now over 3 weeks.

Dead pedal - hesitation - stalling. absolutely no throttle response when trying to pull out into traffic. you press the pedal and there is nothing there. stop and go traffic on the expressway or stopping at an intersection the car stalls. also have experienced surging at highway speed as if the fuel supply is cutting out. we recently returned from a trip to portsmouth nh. we were in six lanes of stop and go traffic on i-95 and the car kept stalling. when you would depress the gas pedal to continue moving there is no throttle response. we parked in the portsmouth municipal garage. as we ascended through the garage looking for a parking space [incline position] about 5 mph, there was no throttle response. the car would not move. i had to continue to feather the pedal to pull into a parking space. we now have 20k miles on the car and have had the car looked at 6 times at the local vw dealer with no fix. the car has serious throttle issues and has become dangerous to drive. please note to numerous to mention vw tdi hesitation issues on many web forums. someone is likely to get seriously injured or killed with this problem that vw must know about. please advise !!!!!

Took my car to get the oil change and was told i have a fuel leak. looked up car online at safecar.gov and saw the 2010 jetta has been recalled for: power train:automatic transmission/ fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings. having a fuel leak is more than draining on gas mileage it is a fire/explosive hazard. on the website it states: consequence: if chafing occurs, there is the potential for a fuel leak to develop. fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. i am having issues with the fuel leakage and need my car recalled or fixed by the manufacturer. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm thank you *tr
