The vehicle would not start. dealer found failure of high pressure fuel pump and metal fragments suffused throughout the fuel injection system (fuel lines, tank, etc.). *tr
2009 vw jetta sportwagen tdi was being operated normally. partial power loss was encountered and dash indicator lights began to illuminate. vehicle was able to continue to nearby destination. when driver attempted to start the vehicle again it would not start. vehicle was towed to local vw dealership. diagnosis was complete failure of the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp). entire fuel system was replaced along with hpfp. manufacturer paid for all repairs. fuel was tested and no foreign containments were found.
The vehicle's engine stalled while traveling down the roadway at approximately 35 mph. the vehicle's electrical system continued to operate (driving lights, interior lights, power steering and power brakes) during this time. engaged emergency flashers and coasted vehicle to a stop at the nearest parking lot. after placing transmission into park, vehicle restarted with no further incident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the engine fault workshop light. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they advised that the failure could have been caused by a failing fuel pump. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the failure mileage was 38,000. the vin was unavailable.
Vehicle engine stopped completely dead and was nearly rearended . was not able to restart vehicle and was towed back to volkswagen dealership. volkswagen told me the high pressure fuel pump was bad and repair would cost $10,000.00 after a furious argument was told they would fix it. this problem has happened to many vehicles that have not reported it to nhtsa when are you going to put a stop to this major problem. maybe when someone gets killed *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle but it would not restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. the technician stated the fuel system would have to be replaced because it became contaminated by the fuel pump. there was an investigation under nhtsa action number: ea11003 (fuel system, diesel) that could have been related to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 114,000. updated 09/18/12*lj updated 09/19/2012 *js
I was driving up a hill in a neighboring town and my car lost all power almost instantly. my ""mdf" read "engine fault workshop" and my glow plug light (since this is a diesel powered vehicle) started rapidly flashing. i was able to shift the car to neutral and coast to the top of the hill, then once reaching the apex of the hill, coast into a grocery store parking lot. my car was completely dead, and i had to tow it to the dealer. *js
While replacing fuel filter cartridge i found metal shavings in the filter housing. the next will be high pressure fuel pump failure with the heavy fuel system contamination by metal shavings as per common scenario. should be not pleasant experience. vw should concentrate on fuel filter/system routine check up and offer preventive maintenance. *js
Tl * the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta sportwagen tdi. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel pump was unable to pump fuel into the system and as a result, the fuel pump would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and the current mileage was 45,000.
Vehicle stopped running at highway speed. after tow and refueling car failed to start and run. taken to dealer for service and informed that high pressure fuel pump was defective/had failed. this problem seems to be more than common for these tdi vehicles. volkswagen of america refuses to offer assistance with the matter and will not acknowledge that these pumps are an issue. *tr
I was driving the vehicle when the glow plug light on the dash began flashing, then the computer displayed engine fault, contact workshop, then the check engine light came on and the call stalled in the middle of an intersection and had to be pushed to the side of the road. the car would not start again. *tr
Car would not start. luckily parked in garage. towed to dealer. determined to be hpfp failure and dpf failure. hpfp and dpf replaced along with associated small parts. but did not replace entire fuel system. a fuel sample taken from the fuel return hose when the car died looks like fine metallic particles. settled to the bottom of the jar after several days. a magnet did not attract the particles so must have been aluminum - most likely from the piston bore of the hpfp. vw paid for the repair. the day i got the car back i took a fuel sample from the fuel tank. once again metal particles (along with other debris normally found in a fuel tank) were found. now we are fearful of driving the car due to metal particles in the fuel system will destroy the new hpfp. please make vw do a recall and replace the pump with a new design that will not self destruct! a car that should go 200k miles or more has failed at 67k miles. and is guaranteed to fail again due to the poor design of the hpfp. this is a huge financial hit for our family as now we are fearful of driving the car and may have to sell it to get a more reliable car. vw is blaming the problems on fuel contamination and that may be true but there is no excuse for a huge repair bill from one tank of fuel that is not up to specs. *tr
Glow plug light and engine fault workshop light came on as i was pulling into work in a.m. parked and restarted vehicle, with no further warning lights. i made appointment for scheduled maintenance with dealer. when i left for home that evening the vehicle started ok with no warning lights. while driving down the interstate freeway at 70 mph the same warnings suddenly came back on and vehicle suffered immediate decrease in power with speed down to about 50 mph. i exited the interstate and tried to make it to the vw dealership, but engine shut down when i stopped at stop sign and would not restart. vehicle was pushed to the roadside by state police and had to be towed. vw mechanic found that the high pressure fuel pump had failed with excessive metal shavings found throughout the fuel system. a diesel fuel sample was sent for testing and was okay. dealer had to replace the entire fuel system. *tr
The car stalled while i was driving down amsterdam ave in new york, ny. the engine puttered then a massive amount of smoke started coming from the exhaust. the smell was unbearable. i took it to two different mechanics and both stated that there was gasoline coming from the exhaust there could have been an explosion. i am glad that there was no explosion because i was driving my family home. *kb
First incident in july 2011 but same ongoing issue and at the dealership at least 8 times in 11 months. currently at the dealership again for almost 3 weeks now. its always the same "symptoms" but always told its another problem..... as follows: -sputters and jerks -exhaust or gas fumes overcome the car -engine revs but the car wont move, then jolts forward. -stalls when trying to start, it jerks violently making a putting noise as if it can't get fuel then dies. -there's a beeping noise coming from something in the engine when it stalls that no one seems to know what it is. i have replaced: -intake manifold -all fuel sensors -low pressure fuel pump -high pressure fuel pump -melted fuses with unknown cause -two batteries -other smaller items related to fuel system. *jb
High pressure fuel pump failed at 52000 miles. the entire fuel system was replaced with a warranty on parts of 12000 miles. after 15000 miles i experienced issue with high pressure fuel pump again. the fuel line from high pressure pump to fuel rail was replaced. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact noticed rust in the fuel filter and pump causing the fuel system to fail. also, the check engine light would illuminate then vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was awaiting a response. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. the current mileage was 35,700. the failure mileage was 35,680. the vin was unavailable.
Vehicles check engine light came on and loss of power died in middle of road towed to dealership and it was covered for warranty they replaced the whole fuel system due to contamination, now not even a year later less 15,000 miles they loss of power again, dealership has had my car for 2 weeks they didn't know whether or not they were going to warranty it they said it had a failed fuel injector. still do not have car back.im beginning to wonder if there wasn't more wrong than just a fuel injector, maybe the high pressure fuel pump was at fault a second time, and they just didn't want to tell me. *js
While driving home the vehicle went into a limp mode, once i made it home, the vehicle wouldn't start. i felt it wasn't getting fuel, so i decided to take it to the vw shop i bought it from. they called me a week later stating it is 6600 dollars in parts and 1600 in labor. i called vw customer care they finally decided to pay for parts. i have since paid the labor to repair the vehicle. after reading online the commonality of this problem seems the vehicle has an issue. what happens when it happens again i pay the full amount.
Driving to the neighborhood post office, the car stalled with the glow plug light coming on as well as "engine fault" being displayed on the display. the car would not start and was towed to the dealership. it was determined the fuel pump failed and metal particulates were found throughout the fuel system. dealership replaced pumps, hoses, and cleaned out other parts fuel may have touched (i.e.,fuel tank) and covered the work under warranty. the service manager informed me it was over $4,000 worth of parts alone. he did confirm the fuel pump is covered under the powertrain warranty.
While on cruise control on i-55 traveling at 65 mph glow plug light illuminated, mfd message "engine failure workshop" appeared and engine died. electrical power was never lost. prior to coasting to a stop on the shoulder, mfd message went away. after coasting to a stop tried to restart engine, starter could be heard but engine would not start. vw service department determined "mechanical internal fault in high pressure fuel pump. metal fragments found throughout fuel system. diesel fuel, mostly from interstate highway gas stations and stanadyne diesel fuel additive purchased from vw dealers used on every refill. engine had 37,862 miles and was purchased new from a dealer 23 months ago. vw replaced the entire fuel system.
I understand that you are currently doing an investigation on the 2009 jetta tdi for stalling issues. while my car is not a diesel, i have had similar problems. three times now while driving my car has suddenly had the rpms shoot up and the car stalls out. i have brought it in to the service center all three times and given different reasons for this same issue, different fixes, and the problem remains. i use this car to transport my son and i long distances for our daily commute over the interstate. this car is not safe. please look into the 2009 wolfsburg along with your investigation of the tdi. something needs to be done and quickly. this has become a very frightening vehicle to be stuck with. it was purchased new and has only 28,000 miles. this is a manufacture defect. these problems should not occur on a two year old car. *tr
Glow plug lamp started blinking; received error message - "engine fault". brought car in for service which took 4 days. approximately two weeks later, the glow plug lamp started blinking again and the second time, there was an error message that said "engine fault workshop!" brought car in for service again and it remained with volkswagen for 5 weeks. i was told that the entire diesel fuel pump system was failing and had been contaminated. volkswagen implied that they thought i had received bad gas, but i am extremely careful about maintaining and fueling this car and can say with 100% confidence that it has only received low sulfur diesel from reputable area gas stations. the fuel system failure did not result in a crash - this time - but it is also just the latest in a long line of extensive problems the car has had since it was purchased new, including stalling, electrical failures, transmission failures, extensive leakage, water damage and other problems.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 volkswagen jetta. the contact was traveling 60 mph when the fuel filter light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that all three fuel filters had failed. the contact stated that the engine exploded. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 40,600.
I contacted vw mid-august 2011 because my car broke down while i was driving and then i could smell gas. i had it towed to vw and there was a problem with a leak in the fuel rail. all four fuel injectors had to be replaced, as well as the gaskets, fuel rail, and spark plugs. this repair cost me approximately $1,100.00. i have enclosed a copy of my bill showing the repairs done and total cost of repairs. when i contacted vw in mid-august i was informed by them that there are no problems with the jetta fuel injectors and that it is not their fault that i have the a lemon of the bunch. very poor customer service skills with all vw personal i have spoken with. i now enclose the recent articles about the fuel injector problems with the vw vehicles. for some reason this recall only includes the diesel engines-which clearly should not be the case. i am requesting reimbursement for this repair as it is related to the same problems vw is having with the diesel-engines per the enclosed vw article on recalls. this vehicle should also be included in the recall. *kb

2009 jetta with 7100 miles failed to accelerate and then died. this happened intermittently 3 times during a one week period. the car could be re-started after the failure but then died again. it acted as if it was not getting gas. i finally had it towed to vw dealership because i didn't trust that it would not do this while accelerating on the freeway. vw determined that it had a faulty fuel pressure regulator. *tr
