While driving at any speed and without warning, the engine stalled, which caused the consumer to pull over. the engine light always stayed on. the dealer inspected the vehicle, but was unable to correct the problem. *ak *jb *jb

Consumer states vehicle burns oil prematurely. dealer notified. *ak

Mass air flow sensor failed at least 6 times in the past 60,000 miles, causing the vehicle to stall. consumer discussed this with volkswagen, and asked manufacturer for an extended warranty. however, volkswagen was not listening. *ak the driver's side seat up/down lever spring broke. the micro switch failed and as a result the trunk light and gas light on the dash were inoperative. the automatic door locks failed. *nm

2000 vw jetta tdi- turbo does not appear to work for past 6-8 months. this causes the car to slow down significantly on any hills, including on entrance ramps, when trying to accelerate on merge with traffic. dealership unable to diagnose, but has offered expensive repairs including replacing mass air flow sensor, some type of valve in the turbo, for example. also noted is the vehicle can intermittently provide some diesel boost- seems only when the gas tank is full. and the fuel filler neck interior door has broken off sometime in the past year. is this related? is this safe? *la

Vw jetta tdi- the turbo hasn't been working. apparently, this vehicle is equipped with a ccv (crankcase vent) system and an egr (exhaust gas recirculation) system. oily fumes from the ccv system combine with carbon particles from the egr system to form a black sticky tar in the intake system. this eventually starts restricting the amount of airflow into the engine, resulting in gradual power loss as the vehicle ages and the intake clogging becomes worse. this is apparently preventable by adjusting the intake air volume of 370 mg/stroke using a computer to reprogram the egr. replacing the manifold & egr is an expensive proposition that is not covered under the powertrain warranty.*ak

I thought my first new car purchase (a 2000 jetta vr6 gls) was a lemon. i, like many others, have experienced several problems. problems such as: - rear cup holders broken - middle/rear seatbelt locked, cannot be used - 02 sensors both replaced since mil light kept illuminating - mas sensor replaced (and later recalled) - both front windows have fallen to the "black hole" (and later recalled; including a recall to the recall b/c they went from metal clips to plastic or vice versa) - paint peeling from inside door handles - alarm system faulty on passenger side door (dealer told me that unless the car beeps at me, the alarm is not secured. so, i must lock the door. stand by for 15 seconds, lock the door again and this time when the car beeps, the passenger door is secured. and, furthermore, (this is good - keep reading) i was told that if i drive too close to a jea bus, their bus computer systems are run on the same channel as my jetta's computer system and sometimes being too close to a jea bus will cause my cars computer system to scramble). computer system can be reset, and did you know that while resetting, vw can make your car beep in different patterns? that's probably a "feature"! - center console/armrest latch broken - large spring sits underneath my passenger side front seat - seat belt no longer click, indicating locked in position (dealer told me it still works. so, now i have to push it down and then tug on it, hoping that it really is locked -- if not, i may fly out that recalled window.) - child restrain seat locks recalled - trunk lock wouldn't stay latched - front fender separating from body of car - grinds going into second gear (manual transmission) - when car is put into 1st gear, it waits a few second before it gets enough power to fully accelerate - brake dust covers alloy wheel, in just hours of cleaning drivers wanted...but they're all in the dealer waiting room! *ak

Consumer states that while driving and no warning the vehicle will stall ,and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. dealer notified.*ak

I have a 2000 jetta and its a good car but it has problems like other jetta owners that i have talked to. i have taken it to a shop and asked them about my problem and they told me it was a common problem with these kinds of jettas. the complaint is when i change the oil or have a good amout of oil in the engine it gets eaten at a quicker rate than it should. it takes like 2-3 days then i have to replace a quart of oil or more to make it a good level. the amount of oil being consumed is not good for the engine or for the evironment. *ak

Consumer concerned with engine and wheel bearing issues. wants to know who is going to reimburse for repairs. oxygen sensor had to be replaced several times. the driver side inner door handle was difficult to operate. the left side axle shaft was replaced because it was making a whining noise. while driving the vehicle stalled. it was later determined that a small rodent had built a nest which clogged the air box. the vehicle stalled again and this time they replace the maf sensor. the cruise control was inoperative. *nm

Excessive oil consumption (2.5 quarts in 300 miles). *nlm

A strong smell of anti freeze can be smelled inside he vehicle while driving. the dealer was notified. *nlm

My wife and i bought a 2000 jetta tdi with a defective mass air sensor, i have been told that engine oil vapor leaks down the air intake and creates a oil film over sensor which renders it inop. with it not working the car accelerates very slowly and has very little power. my mechanic said a replacement is $274.00 for this item and there is no guarantee it wont happen again after buying the new part. i find this problem unacceptable and figure the engineer that designed this part must have got a huge bonus for this recurring problem.*ak

My vehicle is a tdi diesel -computer/engine - engine diagnosis light has come on - diagnosis ($85.00) gate on turbo charger does not operate properly. was told could drive vehicle but performance may deteriorate. engine light still comes on ocaaisionaly. rear brakes seized and wore completely out - dealer refused any warranty - wrote v/w customer service - they refunded about 90% of my cost

My 2000 jetta ran dry on oil at 21,000 miles but not under 2yr bumper to bumper warranty (6k miles after a factory oil change). they did a consumption test for 1500 miles and assured us everything was ok. it was ok for 1500 miles then it was empty again. they had to change the piston rings and pretended that this was a unique problem for our car. i have since read other reports of similar experiences.*ak

Brake pads went callipers went and rotters went with brakes. vw used the wrong callipers for the car. ac went did not go cold. starter went had to replace with new one that was the other. paint staring chipping part of the cost was a key scratch. engine light came on had to replace massive air flow meter.

Turbo has been having problems since dec 2001 - volksw failed to diagnose problem correctly after $1100 worth of repairs. turbo went out on vehicle, causing oil to not be circulated through the engine, and instead flowed straight into the exhaust. volkswagen arranged to replace the engine in my vehicle per my warranty, but later changed their diagnosis and only replaced the turbo.*ak

On 6/15/02 my check engine light came on. dealer diagnosed as p0411 vacuum hose leak and repaired. light came back on on 7/8/02. dealer diagosed a malfunctioning recirculating valve to turbo charger and repaired on 7/23/02. light came back on 7/24/02 and remained on until 9/6/02 when it went out by itself. light came back on 9/11/02 and remains on. i am very unhappy with this problem and wonder if the repairs i have had made were necessary. i would like this problem resolved. please relay to volkswagen of america my dissatisfaction with this warnng light problem. i also am not happy with the response i have received from green toyota. the service department claimed they were not familiar with this recurring check engine problem and even suggested i was low on fuel or had failed to tighten my gas cap. after reviewing the complaints on this web-site, i believe problem is relatively common, and the service department has an obligation to serve the customer more honestly. nlm

Engine check light came on, engine codes determine a faulty mass air flow sensor. *ak

Check engine light (mli) came on. checked engine oil and found to be nearly two quarts low. refilled and called dealership. delaership replaced o2 sensor - indicated that oil consumption of this amount was unusual and should be tracked. several months later, check engine light came on, checked oil and was nearly two quarts low. took to dealership, tweaked ecm settings and fixed the problem. new serice manager claims that high oil consumption is typical with this engine (notice - very different response from first encounter). two days later, while at highway speed, the check engine light came back on. i have an apppoinment with dealer on friday. car is just out of warranty (2 years) and has only 15k miles on it.*jb

Consumer noticed engine consuming every 1000 miles one quart of oil. dealer has been notified. please provide further information. mr

02 sensor failure.*ak

For a newer car this volkswagen has been very problematic. on three occasions after starting the car the engine would make a noticeable sputtering noice and shaking like it was struggling to keep running. the check engine light would come on accompanied by a sulfurous smell and bluish exhaust. upon attempting to put the car in drive, after idling for a while, the car would stall and not restart. usually within an hour to a day later it would start again only after reving the engine to high rpms for about 5 minutes. i contacted the dealer the first time it occured (too busy to see my car) they thought it might be moisture in the engine. the problem seems to occur after or around rainy/snowy weather. i had a tune up recently and the car still feels like it may stall when it is idling at a stop light or in the driveway. this is unaccepable for such a new car. among other problems i had the indash cd player replaced twice because of defect and the fuses that illuminate the temp/radio controls replace twice all within the first month of ownership due to malfunction.*ak

On three occasions my driver/and or passenger side windows fell into the doors. vw fixed them at no charge...after much arguing. ever since i first bought the car (brand new), my car is down 2 quarts before the 3000 mile oil change. vw says that this is normal.i don't think that is right. *ak

Engine check light came on dec 01. took car to dealer and code for glow plugs was discovered. was informed that this was not the problem with my vehicle, and repairs were not made. code pulled up again by 2 other volkswagen mechanics, not fixed until 7/02 after the dealer concluded that the engine needed to be replaced.*ak

Replaced rear brake light 4 times; emergency flasher & turn signals fail to work randomly. twice had rear brake pads replaced; rotors turned second time -- total cost $550. repeated sensor failures -- knock sensor, mass air flow sensor, coolant temperature sensor; induction coil failure & vehicle imbolized. driver mirror repaired twice; passenger p/window stuck down; driver window lock twice; seat belt cracked

No instrument panel light on temperature control. vehicle been at the dealer shop for four days, and was unable to locate the problem. feel free to provide any further information. *ak

Vehicle suffered a lost of power when check engine light illuminates.*mr on march 7 2002 university vw discovered a defective airflow meter. the windshield was replaced for a cracked rain drain. the brake servo was changed for a pin hole air leak. consumer was told that the glow plug harness might be the cause as to why the brake lights come on. the hazard switch switched on and off distressing other drivers behind. replaced the hazard relay switch (on the dash) by myself. back brake pad wore down to the rivets. vehicle overheated on 3 occasions had pressure test and thermostat changed and problem still exist.*ts *jb

This jetta, like many other owners report, burns an excessive amount of oil. contacted dealer, manufacturer. burns 1 qt per 1000 miles. ridiculous. the manufacter reports this is "normal". this is a cover-up for a bigger defect in this model.*ak

Consumer was driving 23 mph, passing a combine, shifted to second gear and vehicle lost all power. applied brakes and stopped passing process. dealer replaced mass airflow sensor. dealer had replaced numerous sensors.*ak

I have a 2000 vw jetta gls and have had several sensor defects time after time from 2001 until the present 2005, in which i have come out of pocket on 4 different occasions for the same problem. these problems include the mass air flow, oxygen sensor, and coolant temp sensor. *jb

My 2000 vw jetta with 2.0 liter engine is suffering same fate as many others, excessive oil consumption. i followed maintenance instructions by having my first oil change / servicing at approx. 5000 miles. at 8190, oil light flashed and i stopped at a gas station...dipstick was dry. added 2 full quarts of oil to bring back to normal. vw has begun an oil consumption test on my car.

The engine failed after leaking oil several times, consumer was informed that the replacement engines are also havig similiar problems.*yh

Engine check light has come on three (3) different times. first time was oxygen sensor, 2nd time was a valve on the turbo, and the 3rd time was the mass air flow sensor.*ak

Engine check light and emissions work shop warning keeps coming on. each time i take the car in the dealership tells me that its a different reason the light is coming on. to date they have made three different repairs to the car and none of them have worked. i received the last check engine/emissions workshop on 4/10/01 and car is in the shop being fixed.*aky

I fell that i have had a lot of problems with my car and most importantly, the problems are on going. i have voiced my complaint to volkswagen customer service, the dealership service manager and sales manager. i have made it clear that i feel that my car is a "lemon" as i have had numerous problems that are ongoing. i do not get called back when they say they are going to call, they point fingers at each other and no results. the sales person/vw dealership consultant offered me a trade in value of $15,500 and a small discount on another car. i wish to seek assistance in making my "lemon" car situation right. i also have a written documentaion of my experience and service history. i do not believe that myself, as a consumer, should be treated in a manner, that disgards the integrety to make things right. if your ageny can help me, i would be appreciative. thank you for your time. no safety derfect listed. *ak

Window regulator: failed check engine light: on

Engine check light came on. car was 14 months old, but out of warranty by mileage. the dealer replaced the coolant sensor for $175.00!! now two months later the "check engine" light is on again. there appears to be water/coolant in the oil! now the car is about 16 months old. volkswagen of america refused to pay for the prior repair, and did not pay for the failed interior lights, either.*ak

Both rear door panels vibrate--dealer unable to fix. engine light illuminated--temp. sensor replaced by dealer. problem re-occurred two days later--dealer replaced temp. sensor. passanger front window went down and wouldn't go up--dealer fixed. three months later, window went down again--dealer fixed. air conditioner eminates musty smell--dealer says problem is due to a plugged drain hole in a/c unit--will no fix. rear passanger door leaks a thick, greasy substance. b-pillar trim vibrates on driver side.*ak

Air bag was repaired 5 times and spiral spring replaced - light still indicates malfunctioning system. *ak consumer states that brake light was inoperative and the electrical connectors were replaced, installed front heated oxygen sensor, install 6 disc cd changer, battery was replaced and wiring harness war replaced. owner is no longer in possession of the vehicle *yd

The engine coolant system on the car has never been right. one month after purchase we brought the car into the dealer because the transmission shifted poorly when the car became hot. it would up shift and downshift for no reason. they told us there was nothing wrong. that this is how they shift. the transmission still shifts in this manner. then in october of 2000 the coolant warning light came on. we were told by the dealer that the coolant temperature sensor needed to be reset. they reset the sensor and on 10/27/2000, just two weeks later, the coolant warning light came on again. this time they replaced the coolant temperature sensor. then on 7/16/2001 the coolant warning light came on again and we needed to have the secondary water pump replaced. now on 8/9/01 the vehicle is at the dealer again because the coolant warning light came on. i am writing a letter to the manufacturer. any further advice or assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.*ak
