Recently reported EQUIPMENT problems on 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

In our 1999 jetta, our passenger seat warmer caught on fire, and burned through my husband's jacket. i reported to volkswagen of america and they said as it was an old car and there was never a recall, they can't help me. i read on many internet sites that this is a problem. i have owned vws since 1986, consider myself brand-loyal but now very upset. we could have had a major fire and no one is caring about this as the car is 10 years old. *tr

Recently my 1999 vw jetta passenger's seat back caught fire, burning from insider the seat back, the seat and my husband's winter coat (i have pictures i can send) while we were driving in a snow storm down i-93. the vw dealers i went to see, let alone my call to vw north america, were asked to provide a replacement seat, to check the electrical connections, etc. the response was almost uniform as to nothing they could do, never seen this before, not within warranty, etc. now my insurance company is asking for $500 deductible for me to pay for this replacement! my insurance guy and the head of service at wellesley vw both said in all their years, they have never seen anything this bad. but what really gets my goat is that the fire was a serious, life-threatening hazard; there are many cases the internet of jettas' seats catching fire ' but not one recall like they did with the passat a few years back. i have owned vws since 1987 when i got my license; my parents since 1953. i consider myself brand-loyal but am now baffled as to their uniform, unhelpful responses. i need some guidance, let alone help to have them fix this problem. someone might have been killed had the seat fully caught fire or my husband was wearing something other than leather that takes longer to smolder than, let's say, fleece. it seems to me that this is their "liability", and they should make good on correcting the situation. *tr

The window regulators have a tendency to break. this is the second time this has happened. i was told that they are plastic and it is common knowledge that they break frequently.

I own a 1999 volkswagen jetta. i have now had to replace the window regulator on 2 occasions. a quick survey of the internet shows that this is not an unusual repair.*ak

Regulator on driver's side window broke again. recently repaired cup holder fell apart again. car self-locks (locks me out of my car by itself) plus i paid for numerous other common problems listed by others. volkswagen never takes care if their known problems. consumers need to get together & file class action suits!!!! *ak

Engine consumes about 1+ quart of oil every 1,500 miles. front rotors need to be replaced at 30,000 miles, while brake pads are less than 50% used. refrigerant in air conditioner gone at around 30,000 miles with normal use in mild climate.

First: coin holder broke, next, the fuel pump. after that, the catalytic converter went. the heat gauge goes on the "i will work when i want to, and i won't when i don't" attitude. speaking of front end bumpers, i've had mine replaced and fixed 3 times, stupid me, shouldn't i know by now not to get so close to those parking curbs. next, it started using oil, every 1000 miles, 1 qt, went to dealer, gave me runaround, mechanic standing by listening, took my side, replaced rings, sorry, i didn't know about the site sooner so i could tell you all this.fixed. maybe, hope. now, car dies on highway for no apparent reason above speeds of 50+, momentarily, and then starts again. the drink holder has now broken, son has to put aa battery above cassette to have sound coming from all speakers. emergency flashers started making cracking noises, electrical problems?, not my vw. air conditioner quit working 1 month ago. went to mechanic today, he says compressor. have you priced a compressor? $840. dealer only part,go figure, aren't they all. wipers are not good, replaced 2 times. so glad i don't have power windows and auto trans. i read what someone wrote, "i love my car". it's a [xxx] shame isn't it ,that we put this much confidence into a car dealer to be this disappointed. all vw jetta's should read "made in mexico" emblazened - i don't know where. if class action suit filed, post here. i got a lemon. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
