Problems with 2018 Volkswagen Atlas ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 16 540 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

I own a vw atlas which is 2 months old. battery died all of a sudden 2 months back. had to jump start the vehicle. couple of days back battery was complete down again. i used the car everyday before battery went cold in my garage.

Car was purchased new 2/15/2018. has 41000 miles and dealer maintained. my wife was at an intersection with a 1 year old and 4 year old in the car when auto shutoff occurred. vehicle would not restart in a busy intersection. my wife had to be pushed to the edge of the road with the kids in the car and be jump started. dealer says it is all due to a bad battery. upon research this is a frequent and hazardous issue. *bf consumer replaced the battery.*jb

Start/stop system or other electrical "feature" drains the battery to the point the engine won't start. worse than that, the start/stop system doesn't deactivate itself even when the battery is too low to restart the motor. we were just stranded in a parking lot in a blizzard thanks to the car not starting back up.

Battery died right after i bought car and it appears this is quite a frequent issue with this car

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 volkswagen atlas. while driving various speeds, the battery warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle seized. the vehicle was taken to three rivers volkswagen (3694 washington rd, mcmurray, pa 15317, (724) 941-6100) where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. the battery was replaced, but the failure recurred eleven months later. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that the rear usb drive caused the failure because it drained the battery. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

While sitting at a red light for about a minute the car turns off due to the cars on/off feature. when the light turned green the car would not start back up. i had to put the atlas in park and rest set to turn it on. it will not turn back on until after a few tries. this has happened to me about 5 different times now. i now drive with that feature turned off until vw can fix this glitch. very unsafe while sitting traffic and car is stalled in the middle of the road.

I was driving on a busy highway and came to a stop in traffic. the auto start-stop activated, and the engine turned off while i was stopped. traffic started moving again so i took my foot off the brake, which is typically when the engine restarts, but the engine was completely silent and the car was dead. i tried restarting it to no avail. i had this same issue two months ago, and volkswagen replaced the battery. after the car died, i got an error message saying the battery was low and i should drive to recharge it, however at that point the battery was too dead to drive. i really wish this error message would have shown up before the car died. why did the auto start-stop activate if the battery didn't have enough juice to activate the engine?? two different batteries, same issue.

Battery dies with short idle. waited less than 10 minutes for my husband and warning came on to drive the car to charge the battery. i was in a parking lot with air conditioning on. engine had manually shut off so i went to restart and battery would not turn on. this has happened before.

I was stopped at a busy intersection when the battery died. this was the second time in 2 weeks that the battery died. traffic had to be rerouted around me as i sat waiting for a jump start. i took it to the dealer and they say the batter is on back order which makes me think that this is a systemic problem affecting this vehicle.

Was driving down my driveway and the electronic brake all of a sudden malfunctioned and turned on, and locked up all movement. the system was screaming electronic brake malfunction, do not drive, brake is activated. i was able to eventually put it back up near my house in the parking portion of the driveway. this is not the first time that the brake has malfunctioned however it is the first time that it has done it while i was driving, normally i can turn off the car wait about 5 minutes or so and then it'll stop malfunctioning however this time the brakes locked up and the car would not move. i could not get the brake to turn off. had the car towed to the dealership (still showing a malfunction after vehicle was off all day). at the dealer for several days, they said they could not replicate the incident and the car does not keep a log of malfunctions internally so there was nothing to be done. i have a long list of problems with sensors, camera systems, and other electronic failures going back through august 2018

The battery has gone dead 3 times,, once at a stop light while driving and once after driving 45 minutes, turning car off for gas, then dead at gas station ... just drove to dealership today and it happened again while in the waiting bay in the service department, jennings volkswagen had to jump car to move it ... was sitting off for 5 minutes after driving for 1 hour

Battery went dead without warning. dealer has car does not know how long it will take to get new battery. dealer says battery problem

I pulled up to a red light at a busy intersection and the auto start/stop activated stopping the engine. when the light turned green, the engine would not restart and a warning popped up stating the battery was almost dead and i should drive to charge the battery. it was a little too late for that! i did not receive any type of warning prior to the battery dying, and why on earth would the start/stop allow the engine to stop if the battery didn't have enough juice to restart the vehicle?? i received a lot of angry honking from people stuck behind me in the intersection, but thankfully a cop nearby saw what was going on and stopped all traffic to assist with pushing my vehicle off the road. my car is barely a year old, this should not have happened. i was three miles from a huge international airport and on my way to catch a flight, but instead i had to wait on roadside assistance to come help my stranded vehicle.

Vehicle does not stay in eco mode. digital display shuts down randomly (radio display) strut noise unidentified

Vehicle battery stopped working within less than an year, dealership service is hard to work unless the car is completely dead and will inform customers that the battery was undersized on the vehicle. it will suddenly die when auto start/stop function is engaged, it can happen while stopped at a red light.

Purchased new 2018 vw atlas with now, 10k miles. the last 2 weeks the dash sensors have been randomly going off & on. sunday 02/10 i was driving, the vehicle shut off while in motion. brakes locked, no steering control, no electrical. when tried to restart the first time -t he sensor said to 'drive to charge 12v battery' but the car would not turn back over to do so. towing company was able to jump it, the battery was running @ 15v which is too high for vw (confirmed with service tech this is abnormal). was not able to keep it running, so we had it towed to the dealership. dealership called & said "bad battery vw atlas is known for chronic battery failure". i was told a new one is on backorder with no eta - but that my atlas is sitting in the lot next to another atlas with the same problem, that has been waiting on a replacement for 3 weeks. will use a loaner car for a month until mine is functioning. i was also told the replacement battery may or not be a fix/solution but it's all they can do for now to get the car running. beside myself there has been no formal recall to this to prevent catastrophic injury to vw atlas owners who own a vehicle that fails while in motion. located on a city street - did involve local law enforcement to prevent additional threats to danger in the roadways.

Sitting at a red light and when it turned green, my start/stop function would not turn my car back on. the dash had all sorts of lights flashing and my car would not start. said the 12v battery was drained. had to push my car out of the way and get someone to jump my car.

I was driving the car on a city street when it suddenly just shut off and would not come back on. this is the second time this has happened, and there is no warning and no way to get the car pulled to safety.

My atlas died in the drive thru while running (stationary but about to move when it died) without any warning. the vehicle has less than 25,000 miles and had just been serviced less than one month prior. when it died, the car dash was blinking different messages but one said, 'drive to charge 12v'. i couldn't turn the engine over; the windows would not go up; and i was stuck in the drive thru for almost an hour before someone was able to jump my car to get it to the dealer. dealer said they had changed 4-5 batteries out of the same type of car that week. that was three weeks ago. no eta on when a battery will be available. i went nearly 10 ten days without a car and now i have a loaner. no information on cause of problem or whether a new battery will fix the problem. neither the dealer nor vw have given me any information or guidance on whether the vehicle will be safe to drive after battery replacement'i repeatedly explained that my vehicle died while running 'thankfully not in an intersection or red light'but still no information on the issue. i also am not getting any information as to why it could take over a month to even get a battery.

Battery died after less than one year (bad cell)

Twice i have been stranded because the auto start stop is not providing enough power to the battery and therefor the vehicle will not start sometimes without being jumped. i have been stranded twice because the auto shut off has turned the vehicle off at a light and then the vehicle would not restarte.

I was sitting with my car parked in a school pick-up line, no-idle zone, so i had my vw atlas running on it's battery. the battery died out of the blue after a few minutes. there seems to be an ongoing battery issue with my vehicle as it has had a hard time turning over this past week. this car is only 1 year old and shouldn't be facing this issue. i'm glad i wasn't in an intersection when it happened, as i've read has happened to others. i'm taking it in to vw for inspection, but it sounds like i'm one of many who is running into the vw battery issue and i wanted to make it known.

The battery keeps dying. i believe it's because the start/stop system is too much for the battery. the battery dies if we stop the car and idle for more than 2-3 minutes, with the infotainment system running.

Engine warning light and red exclamation caution warning lights on vehicle come on from time to time without warning. these warning lights come on during normal city driving conditions. these lights usually go off on their own or after turning vehicle off and back on.

The vehicles battery is dying.

The battery died when the car was six months old while in a store parking lot. they said it was a bad fuel cell and replaced it with the same battery. 8 months later the battery died again in the snow with two young children in the car. we were unable to jump it. the battery dying is now a know issue and they will replace it with a different battery. but they are not recalling it yet even though it is a common problem. my friends atlas died at a stop light due to the auto shut off feature. it is incredibly unsafe.

The vehicle will not start if it is really cold or it has been sitting for days without being started. i am taking it in to the dealership today.

I have had issues with the battery dying on my atlas for the last several months. i have driven it, gone into a store for 5 minutes and coming back out and the battery is dead. or the car won't start the next morning after sitting my heated garage overnight. in my instance the car has been stationary the entire time but i know others have had this happen while in motion. this has happened 7-8 times recently and its unacceptable for this to be happening on a car this new. i have not had the car not restart in an intersection yet like many others have had happen but regardless its still a significant safety concern and vw needs to address this issue. i have read many items that people have taken their cars into the dealer to get the battery replaced and the problem still occurs. vw needs to recall 2018 atlas's for this problem and find a permanent fix for this problem. it is clearly an issue that they know about and need to take action on it now. i can't have my family in vehicle that that i don't know when it will or will not start.

Epc light plus check engine light came on. car would not start. dealer replacing battery, but concerned it will happen again based on cases i've read in vw forums: https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t73111_ds837472. vehicle was stationary, parked in a school parking lot.

Engine warning light as well as epc warning light came on during normal city driving. power and pick up of the vehicle became greatly reduced making travel over 15-20 mph impossible. upon arriving home and turning car off, vehicle was nearly impossible to restart. car was towed from home to dealership were it was found that electrical mechanism in vehicles high powered fuel pump malfunctioned and quit working. high powered fuel pump had to be replaced.

Drove to husbands office and parked in lot. after about 5 minutes received a warning that i needed to drive to charge battery. tried to go but car wouldn't start. had to be towed to dealership. service center said that battery was dead and needed to be replaced. bought the car new in july 2018. read online that this appears to be a known problem with 2018 atlas.

Vehicle, inside our garage, will not turn on. battery is dead, receive error message that 12v battery is low, lights flash and sounds happen, but will not turn over. our atlas is just over a year old. a couple weeks ago, various lights came on then went away and didn't return until today. also waiting on recall for catalytic converter that was before christmas due to check engine light coming on over and over. been at least 3 weeks waiting for that part. disappointed in an expensive new car having this many problems right from the start. calling the dealer today about the battery issue. for the record, this is the car that is driven on a regular basis for my husband's commute to work and kept in the garage.

Intermittent stalls, sometimes in traffic or at busy intersection during normal operation and caused by discharged battery and/or poor battery charging

When riding in the passenger seat the air bag would disengage and engage as the person moved in the seat with the movement of the car. moved the seat back and it went off, dealership mechanic could find nothing wrong. last happened this morning, started after a few seconds of grinding, then went 12 mph, shut down, then started fine. had the vehicle for 14 months the battery went dead, when pushing the start button it would catch and continue to try starting even when the finger was removed. when it started epc would come up and the vehicle would move at about 12 mph. shut the vehicle down and start again, it would run ok. have had it into repairs twice and nothing is found, yet it continues to start or not start and run slow. warning comes up check running light, check right headlight, check left headlight. replaced the battery two months ago, have already had to charge because it has gone dead. it is like the computer panel is not turning off. the vehicle has always been stopped - parked when it will not start, sometimes for a few minutes some times over night after having to use the fog lights. i have all the recalls fixed, but this started after having those fixed. my battery was replaced after 45,000 miles.

Car died in the middle lane of traffic and won't start. tried jumping with our portable charge but that didn't work. gives multiple errors from airbag to 12 volt battery to low beams.

The battery on my vehicle has died multiple times. it is only a year old but it has died while driving in the auto start/stop mode and after parked at work and in my garage. today it was -25 degrees f and it completely died on me after being at work for 4 hours, which was incredibly dangerous. also, more often than not, my auto start on my key fob doesn't work either.

Had the car for 18months and have started having issues with the battery failing for no reason - car gives a message that the voltage is low and will not start. happened after very short time of the engine being turned off a couple of times, no valid explanation from the dealer as to why suddenly started happening. happened once on a highway, once at home. now worried that we don't know when it will happen again.

Battery ramdomly loses charge to start the vehicle. we dorve from salt lake city to vegas. we filled up on gas with some of the electronics running and the car wouldn't start. dash says battery was drained. happened again when vacuuming the car after a wash. doors were open and electronics were off, but it then wouldnt start again.

Car automatic start/stop function frequently fails to restart engine. this has happened over ten times with two of those almost ending in me being rear ended at high speed. dealer says battery is defective and replaced the battery but issue is happening again. no way to permanently disabled start/stop function. this is a safety hazard.

After stopping at a red light at the traffic the car would not restart, the battery of engine died.

Left fog lights sporadically blink on and off for no specific reason. this happens during normal driving conditions, and while stopped at red lights.

I had 2 incidents when using the start-stop system. the first time was a couple of months back. i was driving to my work. when i stopped at a red light (very busy avenue at mathilda ave, sunnyvale with 4 lanes traffic in one way), when i tried to start, the car would not start. i had to restart the engine again to start the car. the second time, 12/2/2018 5:50pm. i was driving with my wife and two of our kids (one infant under 1). we stopped for the red light at the cross road of jackson st and meek ave, hayward (very busy intersection with 3 lanes traffic in one way). when i tried to start, the car completely stopped there and would not ignite at all. we had to call 911 immediately because the speed limit is very high and it put my family into a risk of being hit. the battery completely failed and i can not even put it to a n gear to push the car manually. we had to wait for the officers to come and helped to stop the traffic. the officer helped us to jump start the car and we were rescued. i can not imagine that what would happen if there were a hit accident. we were stucked there for more than 1 hour. now that i am feeling very unsafe to drive this car again let alone that it put my whole family into a risk of being hit by running high speed traffic. the dealership service stated that the battery had low voltage reading at 62%, and battery defective was found. the battery was replaced 2 days after. i got the reply from vw custom care that the 2018 atlas should be good to drive without being returned or replaced. i feel that is unacceptable. from the manual of 2018 atlas, the start-stop system won't switch off the vehicle in case o the battery voltage is low. why did the start-stop system shut down the car in case of a known low battery voltage at 62% ? *dt*jb

The vehicle was purchased in november of 2017 and the battery cannot maintain it's charge. we have experienced a drained battery five times in the first year of ownership. the most recent occurrence happened on 12/2/2018.

My vehicle battery died after refueling. and i had to call for roadside assistance for a jump. vehicle infotainment system showed 2 messages: 1) 12 volt battery low and recharge while driving 2) error start/stop system

The battery died in the intersection suddenly while i was dring waiting for a traffic light. it made me in danger. this is a one year old vehicle. i have driven 6 brand vehicles so far in my life, this is the first time the battery died. i think volkswagen should recall for this problem.

The random problems we are experiencing are electrical related issues. when unlocking the car with the fob the car sometimes does not adjust the seat based on the fob, nor does it recognize the satellite radio, the radio gets stuck on the am setting, etc. other times the car engine shuts off but everythiing else is on just like the auto engine shut off feature. something is wrong with this car. it drives fine and the issue is random but frequent. i don't know what else to say.i am an it professional and the only thing i can think of is that my atlas has some type of software/electrical bug. on sunday morning the radio was not working after i started the car. i had to shut off the car and radio several times in order for it to work. this happens regularly, very random. always when turning on the car.

I was driving my 2018 vw atlas with 8,800 miles on it on 11/5/18. i was stopped at a traffic light and when the light turned green the car's engine did not turn back on from idling and all the lights on the dashboard started going off telling me various things. i do not think having an ecofriendly car is worth it turning off to not turn back on when it's supposed to. i had to have it towed to the dealership, who fixed the car telling me that there were software updates and that the battery was drained. the printout from working on it says that the battery charging system is good but the battery was defective internally, on a car that's a little over a year old. there was absolutely no warning, the car would not recognize my key, would not turn on, and essentially was useless in traffic and extremely unsafe. i am thankful my children were not in the car. vw claims the problem is fixed but reading others complaints i am doubtful and afraid that it's only a matter of time before this happens, without warning, again. i cannot have this happen due to safety reasons, being a single parent of two young kids, and i had to also miss a day of work to deal with a problem that should never have happened in the first place. i am also wondering if this problem has anything to do with my car having an oil spill after an oil change that the dealership did incorrectly in august. they did not tighten the cap to the extent it should have been tightened and oil spilled all over my garage, stained it, and it's never coming out. vw fixed that and gave a free oil change in the future? i really hope that did not mess up my new car and cause this new issue to happen. i cannot have any more issues happening with this car and the battery/computer issues need to be fixed so that they don't ever happen again.

On oct 28 the car stopped at a red light on a busy intersection and the start-stop engine shut off, then when the traffic light turned green the battery didn't have enough power to crank the engine started again. i took car to the vw dealer where 7 recalls were serviced and i was told the problem should be corrected. 2 weeks later the same problem occurred. there seems to be a drain on the battery and the computer doesn't know to avoid start-stop braking when power is too low to start the car. i called the dealer again and they said they could look at it but they don't know of any other problem and couldn't recreate the issue when they had the car for 2 days. i searched the internet and found this thread: https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t73111_ds837472 where this seems to be a very common problem and putting multiple people in dangerous situations without power.

Battery issue- the start/stop feature drains the battery. a 2018 atlas battery died while the car was on at an intersection. was in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn and the car shut down. it cause everything to try off and steering and braking were impossible. it is a known issue at vw and there is no recall.

The most concerning safety issue is the malfunctioning auto start/stop system. on four occasions, it has shut off the vehicle while in motion, pulling into a parking spot, resulting in loss of power steering. on a separate occasion, it shut-off the vehicle while stopping to pay the parking attendant but failed to restart the vehicle when i released the brake and step on the accelerator. i had to put the vehicle in park and manually restart the vehicle. i have also had multiple experiences when i have turned off the auto start/start when i started the vehicle only to have it reactivate itself and shut-off the vehicle when i stopped at an intersection. other issues involve the "infotainment" system and climate control electronics. on multiple occasions, the radio has turned itself on after i have turned it off. as for the climate control system, it periodically deactivates the rear passenger compartment climate control and shuts off airflow to the rear passenger compartment and i have to manually reset the system through the button on the dashboard. these experiences indicate the vehicle electronic and software systems are unstable and the volkswagen dealer has not been able to fix the issues, as they have recurred after the dealer claimed to fix the issues. i am concerned about my family's safety in this malfunctioning vehicle. the date below is the most recent event involving the auto start/stop system. the first occurrence was in mid-february 2018, approximately two weeks after purchasing the vehicle.
