Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2006 Toyota Tacoma

I took my 2006 tacoma in for my yearly pennsylvania inspection only to find out that two separate places wont pass it because the frame is rusted out. toyota knows about the problem and has covered previous years.i called toyota only to be told it was my problem and they wont fix it since its not in the covered years. all they gave me was a reference # (1212040621) and the address for their legal dept so i could refer a lawyer to there. why would i want to get a lawyer when they know about the problem in previous years? its the defective product, not my fault. so im left with a $30,000 truck sitting in my driveway that i cant use! *tr

The frame of my 2006 tacoma is rusting severely, especially the welds that hold the frame together. i took my truck to the toyota dealership and they told me there is nothing wrong with 'surface rust' and it's 'normal', even though it is obvious that the problem is a galvanic reaction and will eventually cause structural failure. the two previous generation tacoma's had the same problems. there are hundreds of people that i have found across north america with the same problem. toyota obviously understands what the problem is but refuses to acknowledge it. i have taken action to protect the frame but toyota refuses to assume any responsibility for an obvious defective manufacturing process. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that he took the vehicle to a mechanic to have routine maintenance performed when the mechanic stated that the chassis was corroded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection but the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but was unable to provide any assistance. the failure mileage was 110,000. updated 11/26/13*lj

2006 toyota tacoma has outrageous rust to frame. i have read the previous complaints about this subject by other people and it's more of pretty much same problem. i just can't believe that there isn't an investigation into this by the government. this kind of rust is not normal by any standard. i have seen many makes and models of pick up trucks five years older than this one with little or no rust to their frames. i'm sure that there is a test to determine what quality steel they used on tacoma frame. is it china recycled steel? (nothing else would rust so quick and so bad.) it's hard for me to imagine that automaker of this size would put 2 tons of weight on frames so defective, to save few dollars. frame is the most important component of the vehicle ,everything rides on it including persons life. for toyota to say that you need holes in the frame before they may or may not do something about it is greedy. they should have used the right kind of material in the first place. for over $30,000 for their pick up truck most people would expect the frame to be made out of steel not mud; because that's what it looks like. after all $30,000 is no pocket change for most people. i am sure they would not be saying that if it was their family member driving their tacoma on the highway at 65 mph. i could go on about this, but what's the point? the government should protect it's citizens from cheaters like toyota, not let them get away because they have billions. average citizen does not stand a chance against corporation of that size. "to the person or persons at toyota i can only hope that you have a peaceful death when the time comes, and you should be able to take all the profits with you. you must have worked really hard on this scam. you know what materials you use for your product." if this offends anyone i apologize in advance, this is how i feel about this ordeal. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for an unrelated repair when he was informed that the frame was rusted. no repairs were made to the frame and several months later, the contact discovered a corroded hole in the frame. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 81,000. *tr

Since the vehicle was about 6 years-old i've experienced a high degree of frame rust. since this time, on a annual basis, i've spot painted (with rust protectant paint) areas of the frame that is 'peppered' with rust. recently, i found out that this problem is rampant throughout the tacoma community, so i have since contacted toyota. the local dealership has been non-responsive, so i am in the process of dealing with the corporate customer service department. as i write this, i am awaiting their response. i find this frame rust problem dangerous and unacceptable. my local climate only sees an average humidity level of 5%, with very little rain, yet still the frame is peppered with rust each year i do my inspection. *js

We own a 2006 toyota tacoma that was taken to a garage for a state inspection and was pointed out to us that the vehicle has extensive frame rust with area of significant rust flaking off. it was also noted that there was a small rust through in one area. we took this vehicle to the dealer where we purchased it.they took pictures of the vehicle to forward to toyota for them to evaluate the situation. it was noted that the technician exclaimed that the vehicle had this much rust for such a low mileage vehicle (29,407 miles). toyota replied to the inquiry and stated that it was not a safety issue and they would not act on it. looking at the underside of the vehicle and comparing with other earlier tacomas that had been recalled for frame rust, i fail to see where this vehicle should not be considered having a major rust problem. i'm concerned that there will be further degradation and possible lead to the vehicle being unsafe. pictures and copy of work order available upon request. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the center console would stay closed.. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that they would have to replace the console. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the failure and the current mileage was 87,731. ....updated 10/11/12 *bf the manufacturer did not offer any assistance. updated 10/15/2012 *js

Spare tire cable snapped on the morning of 7/12/12.snapping of the cable resulted in the rear of the vehicle becoming airborne and shifting to the side while in mid air. luckily time was on my side. i was working nights and had this incident unfolded while working my normal day shift, i am positive there would have been contact between my vehicle with another vehicle, or another vehicle with tire and rim on route 287 north in new jersey as the roads are packed like sardines in a can yet moving at a brisk pace. i did not know what is was at first but immediately pulled off into the shoulder. found the wheel and noticed that the unused spare tire is now in need of replacement at a cost of $180. *tr

This complaint is presently filed under "suspension", but should be filed under "structure: frame and members". the following is what is printed under the "suspension" file: despite washing, scraping/wire brushing, spot priming and painting the truck frame once per year, the frame from just in front of the axle, all the way forward, both sides, is severely corroded. the front cross piece is totally disintegrated. the "incident" is that the corrosion is so bad that the front stabilizer bar mount, driver's side, has torn away from the frame. further inspection shows that the frame in the engine compartment area needs total replacement/extensive repair. this appears to be the same frame corrosion problem supposedly addressed by toyota in the 1990 to 2004 vehicles. but toyota is not issuing recalls or "customer programs" for 2005 tacoma's and newer. since the box-sectioned frame rusts from the inside out, the severity of the problem is not apparent until it is too late - when a catastrophic frame failure can happen - as with the failure of my stabilizer bar. toyota needs to address this frame issue immediately. can you imagine if an axle mount or engine mount failed on the highway? this vehicle is only 6 years old, this is insane! *tt

Around the end of april my tacoma started making a horrible noise whenever i backed up. after some searching around i found my fan was rubbing on its cover. next i looked into why on some forums, so after some research i discovered its do too a broken motor mount. i got under my truck and true to behold my motor mount had collapsed into the frame. this is a well known issue with 05-06 tacoma's yet toyota wont do anything. they say im 100,000 miles out of warranty. to make it worse toyota is well aware of the matter because all 07 and newer tacoma's have extra support plate welded on the frame to prevent collapse. *tr

Heavy rust on vehicle frame. the front tow bar is rusted through. you can see the threads of one of the bolts that mounts the skid bars through the frame. heavy rusting of frame mostly in the front under the engine. the frame is rusting from the inside out. this is evident when you wipe the inside rails of the frame and rust deposits are found. the tow bar is hollow and multiple 2-3in long by 1/8-1/4in pieces have been pulled out. other parts of the frame have similar pieces found although none have been found that are quite that large. the rust is causing the frame to bubble up and is often twice the width of the frame. some parts are fine. there is a spot on the front frame that looks brand new when wiped down. it is black and shiny while right next to it is some of the worst rust. the only holes i have found so far are in the front. i have a quality vehicle inspection from big island toyota when my the vehicle had 70801 miles noting the rust on frame. this was in april 2012. the vehicle was purchased in hawaii and has been in hawaii ever since. that inspection was when the vehicle was six years old. other components of the vehicle are showing extensive rust as well such as brackets, nuts, bolts, wheel hubs and rims. *tr

The frame at the rf motor mount broke and the engine dropped so that the fan is hitting the shroud of the radiator, there seems to be a weakness in the weld location that the manufacturer changed on the 2007 frame in this location of the motor mount area. the dealer/manufacturer toyota is not warranting this defect , there are a lot of complaints on the internet, i hope they also filed with the nhtsa. *tr

The clear coat started flaking then the paint and now the primmer is coming off leaving bare metal and rust on hood, cab, and now on doors and fenders. if hand washed the layers can and do cut or stick in you skin so do not have children wash or go through any fundraiser car washes for fear of injuring someones child. toyota said that their would not be a recall for paint due to it not being a safety issue, i guess having paint products in-beaded in your skin is fine an safe. *tr

I have an 06 tacoma pre-runner, which i have noticed to have some excessive rust on the frame. after having some work done on my truck, my mechanic asked if there has been a recall on this truck for the frame rusting, because it should not be this bad. after researching, i have found that they had recalled earlier models for the same problem. so what about the newer models? now i am concerned about the safety of the frame. *tr

The frame and most of the mechanical components attached to the frame on my 2006 toyota tacoma pick up are rusting very rapidly, it has approx. 45,000 miles on it. at the rate it is rusting i feel it is going to be a safety issue down the road with the frame cracking or a mechanical problem. *tt

Just bought a 2006 toyota tacoma from a toyota dealer as a used certified vehicle. recently noticed rust stains on my driveway where i park the vehicle. i decided to look under the truck. i noticed that the frame is covered with rust. mostly on welding points and flat surfaces. i've been researching online and have come to find out that this was once an issue with this truck in the older models and was stated to have been resolved. but the complaints i've read so far have been of the same vehicle as mine built between 2005 - 2007. called toyota directly and was told that this is not considered a recall or safety issue. was told to contact my dealer. i know rust is corrosive and is going to spread over time progressively getting worse. i don't want to be driving the vehicle one day with my children and have the vehicle not operate properly and cause a automobile accident. thanks

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the latch for the center console, located between the front seats failed and would no longer close. the vehicle was taken to an authorize dealer where the contact was advised to replace the entire center console. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance because the failure was not covered under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 55,800. updated 8/30/11 *cn updated 09/23/11. *jb

Been to dealer once 2 years ago about rusting frame and they told me it would not be addressed because there were no perforations. i'm sorry but once there are perforations the vehicle has lost structural integrity making it unsafe and undriveable.. *tr

Barkley toyota, asheville, nc, noted, on 1 nov 2010, "frame on truck rusted on "quality vehicle inspection" report. said it wasn't important. on 7 sept 2011 jacobson toyota, durham, nc, noted "heavy rust throughout underbody" on its "25-point inspection." on 14 sept 2011, barkley toyota, the usual service provider, inspected the truck, found heavy rust throughout the underbody, but said it was up to toyota to fix any problem. barkley did not evaluate safety issues. barkley said photos and a description would be sent to toyota and i might, or might not, hear directly from them. identical problems were found on 1995-2005 toyota tacoma, and a recall was issued. but toyota has not acknowledged or recalled 2006 or later tacoma's which have what appears to be the same problem. *kb

I had my truck inspected by toyota of bristol for frame rust. at that time they said it was surface rust and toyota would not do any thing about it even though it was still under warranty. now the truck has rusted to the point that i can not drive it and it only has 63500 miles on it. the spring shackles on the rear of the truck have completely rusted away leaving the rear end of the truck almost completely unattached to the truck frame. even though toyota has a campaign # sc-eod to repair 2005-2008 toyota tacoma frames the said mine was not covered. *tr

2006 toyota tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate. although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. since toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. a google or similar internet search on "tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending. *tr

We heard a loud noise in the engine area, when going over bumps. took it to our mechanic, and he found a loose fan shroud and tightened it up. two weeks later the power steering went out while my husband was driving. we towed the 2006 toyota tacoma double cab to the dealership we bought the car from, and they finally told us the frame was broken under the engine area, right next to the power steering. they told us $14,000 to fix the truck. they said we need a full frame replacement. the truck has only 71,000 miles. it has not been repaired...toyota offered to pay 1/2 of the frame cost, which they said is $9800, not including the 40 hours @$40/hr of labor they want to charge to replace it. they will not tell me why my frame is broken. i had my truck towed to an different repair shop, for another estimate, which the dealership hasn't even given me their written estimate. when i asked for it they made up an excuse on why i had to wait for the service rep. to access my account to print it out for me, this is when i removed my truck last week after, they told me to take the deal or get my truck off their property or they would starting charging me fees. my truck has been broken for three weeks now, i have had no loaner, and now help from toyota or the dealer. my husband could have been in a serious accident, when he lost power steering, this is a defective frame, and due to it breaking, it caused the power steering to go out. we have no truck now, and still owe over $10,000 for this broken, defective one. *tr

The frame on my 2006 tacoma is totally rusted! the finish on my wheels is peeling off as well!!!! total crap!! *tr

I own a 2006 tacoma trd sport with 67000 miles that i bought with 39000 miles on it. i fanaticaly take care of this vehicle, going as far as crawling under it to wash the frame. when doing this i noticed that wherever there is a weld or flat surface that the paint is missing and there is rust. i have read in many articles that these frames as well as previous generation tacomas were made by dana and that there were severe safety issues due to corrosion in earlier ones. why didn't toyota correct these issue on newer models? i have also read that toyota will not address the issue untill there is perforation. when the frame reaches the perforation point it will be dangerous to drive. my truck isn't yet at that stage so i'm expecting toyota to do nothing for me. *tr

I am writing to file a complaint about my 2006 toyota tacoma. in january 2010 while i was having new tires installed on my truck i noticed a significant amount of rust and large areas of metal flaking off of the frame, crossmembers and factory installed trailer hitch of my truck. subsequent to this discovery i did some research on the internet and found that toyota had instituted a customer support program for owners of 1995-2004 tacomas addressing this exact issue. on january 15, 2010 i took my truck to gateway toyota in tom's river nj, the dealership where i bought my then new truck in 2006 and had their service manager inspect my truck. i was present during this inspection and i pointed out the large arrears of rust and flaking metal on my frame, crossmembers and trailer hitch to the service manager who told me that unless my frame had actual holes in it caused by rust nothing could or would be done to correct the obvious corrosion of these vital components. this rust problem is an issue that toyota has been avoiding dealing with for many years and i feel that ignoring this issue is affecting the safety and value of my truck. it is beyond logic for toyota to assist owners of older vehicles and ignore owners of newer and much more valuable vehicles with the exact same problem. please institute a recall of all toyota tacoma trucks regardless of year of manufacture before serious and possibly deadly incidents occur due to compromised structural integrity of these substandard and rust prone frames. . thank you. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota tacoma and the frame and all steel components on the underside of the vehicle are rusty. this vehicle only has 31,000 miles the speedometer. *tr

In 09 noticed my 3year old trucks frame was rusting on the frame. rust was to the point that frame was swelling and flakes of metal were falling off to the touch. took truck to dealer where it was inspected. they said there was nothing they could do and recommended sanding rustproofing and paint. despite taking action against rust frame has continued to corrode in other locations such as welds where shocks are connected to frame. concerned frame will eventually fail. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact noticed the frame was covered with rust. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they confirmed that the frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 12,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact noticed an excessive amount of rust on the frame and contacted the manufacturer. the manufacturer advised him to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. the dealer stated that they would keep an eye on the rust yet the contact stated that the rust became progressively worse. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was approximately 32,900 and the failure mileage was approximately 23,400. updated 07/08/11 *bf the consumer stated the frame began to rust within three years of purchase. updated 09/19/11

The carpet is wearing off in my 2006 toyota tacoma, due to the manufacturing mat not being/designed in the right spot. it will cause a safety issue as the hole gets bigger. the carpet not has a hole and my hill can get stuck there as it gets bigger. *tr

I have a 2006 toyota tacoma. it is washed regularly and all manufacturer routine maintenance is performed. every year i take the time to do through inspection underneath to make sure there are no problems. last summer when flushing out frame tubes with a garden hose i noticed large flakes of rust being flushed out through the drain holes. i also noted significant rust on many areas of the frame. this summer i can see the problem is getting severely worse. brackets and mounts are becoming severely rusted. frame is beginning to flake. skid plat is nearly rusted through. at the mass inspection the inspector told me the truck frame is rusting fast and i needed to be concerned. this truck is only 4 years old! the body is perfect. but the frame is crumbling! i have spoken with my dealer. he said many 2005 models were recalled for this problem and toyota was replacing the frames. they did an inspection and said my problem is exactly the same as the 05s. but they did think toyota was going to repair the 06 models. please help. i need at least 4 more years from this truck. and i looked at trading, but the dealer said with the rust my current vehicle is not worth much on a trade. *tr

The frame is broke in the front side of the driver, this truck never was involve on an accident or on an offroad extreme situation, always used on the city or on freeways. i went to the dealer and they open a case and i'm waiting for a answer, i hear the phone conversation of the dealer whit toyota's engineering department and they said that is not the first report of this kind of problem whit the frame. *tr

The frame of my 2006 toyota tacoma is severely rusted at all welds and connections. since the car is garaged 95% of the time and the vehicle only has 12,000 miles on it and since i wash it regularly it makes even less sense. i've taken the vehicle to the dealer and they confirmed it was severely rusted but not yet "perforated"--the criteria for the warranty to kick in. the technician told me it was the worst he'd seen. i've called toyota corporate in california and have been directed to the lady in charge of the previous recall for rusted toyota tacoma frames that ended with the 2002 model. she told me there was nothing they could or would do. i was told i'd have to have a body shop clean the rust areas, treat them with a rust neutralizer (sic?) and then re-paint them. i am a fanatic about car cleanliness and even have a spotless engine compartment at all times. the previous tacoma frame recall was from 1998 - 2002 and toyota replaced frames and entire vehicles. the problem still persists. i've logged onto the tacoma yahoo chat group and found numerous tacoma owners of later model trucks complaining of the exact same issue. *tr

The frame of the truck is very rusted and pitting and i feel that this will cause frame failure and i also am on a second tailgate first one bent in half . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the frame was corroded. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was advised to paint the vehicle as a temporary remedy. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 09/07/2011 *ln *tr

Starting in march 2009, cast aluminum wheels have paint bubbling and surface corrosion. contacted toyota and they would not address the issue stating out of warranty condition. a professional wheel reconditioner has stated that if even if repainted it would return since the corrosion is embedded into the metal. my opinion is that over time, surface corrosion can lead to weakening of the wheel structure potentially causing failure and serious injury. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota tacoma. while the bumper was being replaced, the technician noticed that the frame was corroded and rusted out. the technician stated there was a recall that was expired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the recall expired and did not offer assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the recall details were unknown. the failure mileage was 1,000.

Front and rear mud flaps tear loose and beat side of vehicle as they do not completely separate when this happens . on the front at highway speed driver will hear very loud noise from banging on side of vehicle . when this occurs on the rear passenger side the flap will contact the exhaust pipe and burn the plastic .if someone is traveling at highway speed this could lead to a fire in the rear wheel well . my front passenger side broke around 20 june 2008 two weeks later 3 july 2008 drivers side broke , yesterday 7 aug 2008 i noticed the rear passenger was broken and had contacted the exhaust pipe causing it to melt. *tr

The vehicle frame and included tow hitch and misc areas of the undercarriage are extremely rusted to the point of cracking and flaking metal. also of a less serious concern, the alloy rims are heavily corroded, both conditions were noticed within two years of ownership. i am the original and sole vehicle owner. i will be mailing pictures along with a hard copy of this form to the address below. updated 02/01/12*lj updated 04/18/12

I am original owner of 2006 toyota tacoma, currently has 41,000 miles. began to notice a little surface rust on the frame around 20,000 miles at which time i pointed out to service dept at dealership where i purchased the truck. was told that should not get any worse, and there was nothing to work about. since this time rust has gotten considerably worse, each time i try to speak with someone at toyota or dealership i am given run around, cold shoulder. i have researched several legitimate and reputable sources and have found hundreds, possibly thousands of individual complaints of frame rust on 2005 and newer tacomas. please, someone help! my family needs this truck to last. this comes down to simply doing the right thing, being honest, and fair. *tr

Vehicle 2006 toyota tacoma with towing package factory installed. while loading a 450 lb motorcycle into the bed of a 2006 toyota tacoma, using a motorcycle ramp, the tailgate completely collapsed by bending into a u shape in the middle causing the motorcycle to come falling down and injury two persons that were loading the motorcycle. all weight limits were checked in the owner manual before loading and the same motorcycle had been loaded into 3 other trucks of same size before with no incidents. i believe that the tailgate of this particular vehicle is unsafe and someone could be seriously injured or death could have occurred in this situation. *tr

The paint on the 2006 tacoma with 5000 miles had numerous paint chips all over the body. the paint seemed extremely thin/low quality. the vehicle was driven approximately 35 miles/round trip to work and parked in a garage. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated when accelerating in 1st gear at 15 mph, the vehicle stalled on 9 occasions. at other times, the shifter would not go into reverse. there was a clunking noise when shifting occurred that became constant as the problem worsened. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer but the problem was not corrected. an appointment was scheduled with another service dealer. the fuel warning light was not activated at the proper volume of fuel. these problems happened shortly after the carpeting was replaced due to water leaking through the firewall. the manufacturer was notified. the consumer stated the vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse. on numerous occasions the truck stalled. updated 12/18/06. *jb

I have a 2006 toyota tacoma with 43,800 miles on it. i have taken the tacoma in to valley high toyota in victorville numerous times for a terrible braking problem that they are now recognizing on the prius. the truck does not stop when driving over any uneven surface. when we went to valley high toyota we were told that it is abs brakes trying not to lock up. in fact, the brakes don't work at all in this situation which could lead to a very serious accident. furthermore, there seems to be a problem with the motor mounts as well. in 2007 we took the truck in for its first motor mount problem, it seems that both motor mounts were stretched beyond repair and had to be replaced. we thought the problem was over, but in nov. 2009 the driver side motor mount snapped completely through. the truck has never been driven roughly and this should not have happened. i researched this problem and found that there were new designs put into place on the 2007 tacoma models. the mechanic working on the truck said he could tell the truck had not been driven hard and stated that he had seen this happen before. we have also noticed that since the first motor mount problem the transmission has been shifting extremely rough. we've asked valley high toyota about the transmission several times and they have said there's nothing wrong with it. our warranty is almost up and i'm worried we could have a transmission failure within the next several months. my daughter drives this truck, and i no longer feel it's safe for her to drive. i am very concerned about these problems and the fact that our local toyota dealer won't do anything about the brakes or the transmission, we are fortunate that the motor mounts did not cause the engine to fall out of the truck, causing serious damage to the vehicle and injury to my daughter and anyone else. *cn
