The vehicle's cluster would start going haywire - with the speedometer going to zero, the rpm fluctuating, and the temperature gauge reading cold, at random times while driving and in motion. the a/c would go out as well, and the brake and abs lights would come on. the car would still run but the cluster would flicker as described. after flickering for a while, it would resume as normal and then happen again as i continued driving. i had my camry inspected and it was diagnosed with a malfunctioning abs actuator assembly. i had another abs actuator put in, and thankfully no one was injured in the car due to the faulty brake system. it was unsafe to drive as the abs was malfunctioning.
Sudden cluster failure of dashboard while driving, possible short in abs control system causes loss of odometer and speedometer, jumping needle for engine temperature and tachomteter, loss of gear indicator light. both check abs and brake lights are illuminated. unplugging abs remedies engine, tachometer, and gear indicator. still have no odometer, speedometer, and warning lights for brake and abs permanently illuminated.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving 40 mph, the abs and brake warning indicators illuminated and the rpms constantly increased. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 184,293.
Toyota camry abs actuator/ecm failure. i have a 2009 camry that has been well maintained and had no known issues until last wed 2/7/18 when driving home from work all of sudden both the speedometer and tachometer went haywire and started jumping up and down from 0 to the max, then both the brake light and the abs lights came on and the temp gauge dropped to zero. i thought that the car was about to shut off but that didn't happen. my car was still driving, but none of the gauges registered that the car was in motion and the brake and abs lights remained on. today is exactly a week from that initial warning and i am still having the same issue once the car has been in drive mode for more than 20 mins. i took the car to my local toyota dealer who has maintained the car since my purchase for diagnosis on 2/8/18 and was told at the time that the issue is the bad abs actuator and ecm and that both pieces are a part of the car's computer that sends the signal for the brakes to stop. i was also told at that time that there was a similar issue with the hybrid camry for the same year, and extended warranty was placed for the hybrid but not for my camry le. i was shocked because this is a road hazard and a issue with faulty parts installed in the first place. now toyota is saying the repair is $2500. this should be included along with the hybrid under an extended warranty. i have found on internet searches that toyota has been aware of the issue since at 2010 but they have refused to offer repairs. this is definitely a safety hazard whereas the driver is never certain that the brakes will work or fail. i say that maybe this car should be under a full recall because i was also told that my engine is burning excessive oil, they tested it mid year 2017 and i was just told that my car failed the test and needs to have the repair done on that as well as the abs actuator.
I have a toyota camry (2009 around 84k miles on it) and yesterday i noticed, the abs light and brake lights came on and then the speed odometer stop working and did some research and noticed this is a common issue with this car. found similar complaints on many sites ,there is a recall only for toyota camry hybrid models(https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/07/why-toyota-should-recall-the-camry-hybrid/index.htm) not for other models and this repair cost would go upto 2700 $ which is 10% of the car cost . till now people used to think toyota is a reliable car but certainly this is not with these types of approach.
Problem description: 2009 toyota camry, brake light and abs turn on, rpm and speedometer stop working intermittently, and a/c also seems to work intermittently. it is the same issue shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdtgabjrfds it is dangerous because you have intermittent use of your dashboard sensors. the dealership wants to replace the entire abs hydraulic system for the cost of $3000. this seems to be a well documented problem.
Odo meter malfunction, abs light, brake light on. ac not working
The abs and brake warning lights illuminate, temperature gauge, gear gauge and speedometer not working. this happens intermittently and, when it does, the ac does not work. the problem began with the abs and brake lights. over time, the other gauges and the ac became involved. when these warning lights go off and the gauges work, the ac also works. i am told the brake actuator needs to be replaced.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced violent shaking after being operated at 50 mph. the abs warning indicator illuminated. the contact also stated that they saw smoke coming from the engine compartment. the contact stated upon inspection they saw red fluid leaking from the vehicle. the contact stated that they de-powered the vehicle and exited it immediately after seeing the flames. the vehicle was taken to the city world toyota dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
At start up the gauges started to work intermittently, after a while driving down the road they start working fine after a few miles they start jumping and falling. brake light and abs lights comes on and ac quits working we haven t drive the car since this started happening called the dealer and they told us to take to service, before that i will like to know if there's a recall for that. on the last service made by toyota dealer, they washed the engine, a practice that i am not agree, does that may be the cause? let me know, thanks *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving approximately 50 mph, the abs and brake warning indicators illuminated; however, no brake failure occurred. the vehicle was taken to north hollywood toyota (4606 lankershim blvd, north hollywood, ca 91602, (800) 800-6730) where it was diagnosed that the abs module accurator failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired due to cost. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
The abs light and the red bold brake light came on and then off and the next day the abs light and the brake warning light came on and the the speedometer went to zero, the tachometer went to zero when i was driving on the freeway, also the air conditioner would not work, after a few minutes the warning lights went off and everything worked for a few minutes and the same thing happened again. i drive the car immediately to the repair shop and then checked the owner's manual and read it's the abs system is malfunctioning for the car.
i started to back out of the parking spot at the hotel i was staying to go out for dinner with my friends, i release the brakes and put the car in reverse. then all of sudden the dash board lighted up then disappeared briefly when i put it in forward. as i was driving away from the hotel the lights on the dash board was lighted again. then as i proceed to get on the freeway the dashboard lit up with warning check vsc system. (the hotel to the freeway ramp was a block away) i was driving in the right hand lane for several miles on the 580, because i noticed the brakes felt weird. the lights on the dash board remained lighted. the red indicator light for my brakes were on indicating the brakes were not released, but it was. at this point i was tensed and scared as i drove on the 580 freeway. i exited off the freeway slower than normal and i would press down on the brakes lightly and it would jerk and rock. it would bounce myself and friends in a rocking motion. we were all scared when i told them that i was not pressing on the brakes as it rocked. i was not playing with the brakes. my friend sitting in the front passenger side, confirmed to my friend sitting in the back i was not doing anything with the brakes as we rocked while driving or at the stop signs. i was driving cautiously on the streets due to i was afraid i might rear end someone. every time i made the stop it would rock. so from the restaurant to the hotel i drove the streets and stayed off the freeway. the "check vsc "and indicators lights remained on the whole time. the following day, my husband drove out to get the car and drove it home for me. we took the back roads home to avoid freeway driving. as i drove behind him, i notice the brake lights stayed on most of the time. he too noticed the lights on the dash board remained on and the brakes were not working correctly.
While driving at various speeds the speedometer goes to 0 even though the car is still performing and accelerating. the abs light comes on and the dealer said that the abs actuator needs to be replaced. it seems like this is a known issue especially with the hybrid model and should be recalled and repaired by toyota
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to operate. the contact mentioned that the brake pedal was depressed with extreme force for immediate stop. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was undetermined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,675.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that the tachometer gauge was not displaying the correct reading levels, and the odometer dropped to zero. in addition, while driving at 65 mph, the abs and the brake warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,283.
Abs module is killing signals to dash to display. gauges are displaying zero during driving and mileage for odometer is not moving (affected gauges: speedometer, tachometer, temperature, gas, etc). after taking the car to a mechanic, the dealer quote for the price to replace the abs module was $1,800. the mechanic mentioned verbally that toyota had planned a recall but because there weren't enough complaints, no recall has been filed. investigation into this matter would be highly appreciated. thank you. ma 10/02 updated 10/30/2017*cn
Re 2009 toyota camry le with 62,100 miles; assembled in either georgetown ky, lafayette or indiana: the brake actuator assembly failed, resulting in the illumination of various warning lights and the "rpms started bouncing communication code u0073," according to the dealership. in a 2012 and 2013 recall for different toyota vehicles, the record about this same failure states "(a)n electrical component within the actuator may experience an increased resistance resulting in the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the vehicle stability control (vsc) system, antilock brake system (abs), and traction control system...[meaning] these systems could become inoperative, reducing the directional control assistance, increasing the risk of a crash." *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while at a stop sign, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. one day later while driving 2 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle jerked, and failed to stop. as a result, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. no injuries were sustained. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 09v388000 (vehicle speed control). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 33,000.
While driving at 65 mph, the speedometer decreased to zero. in addition, the abs and parking warning lights illuminated. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs control module and the actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 103,737.
On three occasions i press my brake to stop at a red light my car going 25mph or slower and my abs brakes kick in and i have to swerve so i wouldn't hit the car in front of me.
Check vsc system and check engine lights came on. pulled up to a stop sign going 25mph and had decreased brake function. had to push brake pedal very hard to get the car to stop. brakes functioned normally after that but lights are still on. *tr
Guages started going crazy and the abs warning light and brake light came on. after reviewing several comments off the internet i think that the abs module is faulty. *tr
First to fail was the speedo after the abs and brake light came on. no actual brake problem but the lack of speedometer is unsafe. abs unit essentially controls instrument cluster..not necessary or safe plus dealer repair part approx $1800.00.
The dashboard abs and brake lights came on, speedometer dropped to zero, and the tachometer jumped while on the freeway. the first reaction when seeing the brake light on was to reach for the emergency brake release and on the vehicle the release is the step type. this release is the hood release and luckily the safety on the hood did not allow the hood to open. i've reported this to toyota when i got a recall for replacement of the dash if it cracked. they told me they hadn't heard this, and i told them to go to the internet as it was there and there were youtube videos showing this condition. *tr
While driving or when parked, all dashboard gauges (engine temp, speedometer, etc.) drop to 0. at the same time, the "brake" and the "abs" lights illuminate. the indicator for park/drive/reverse is no longer illuminated, and the outside temperature indicator flashes between "e" and the correct temperature. in addition, the a/c fails to cool, despite all lights/indicators on the console appearing normal (no flashing lights to indicate a malfunction.) all above issues will randomly occur - no obvious correlation to braking, acceleration, etc. at times, some of the gauges will normalize, while others remain at "0." in addition, some gauges will fluctuate sporadically, or "bounce" up/down - not indicating true engine temp or speed. the problems will all resolve at times, seemingly randomly, and then reoccur - just as randomly. i have found numerous videos on youtube which document this issue, and i have noted numerous complaints on this website describing the same problem. after several weeks (on 11/14/14), i took my car to the local dealership, describing the issues and suggesting the brake actuator had failed (as i had read from other owner complaints.) the local dealership stated that they had seen several other vehicles with similar issues, but was confused about the involvement of the a/c issue. (please note: i live in a city with a population of less than 250,000.) after several days of diagnostics, the local dealership contacted a toyota specialist in houston, tx, who confirmed that the brake actuator had failed. i paid $1932.23 for parts and labor (that's including a 10% discount) to have the issue repaired. my vehicle was with the dealership for 11 days before it was finally repaired. i am concerned that so many people seem to have had the same problem, and that a recall has not been issued for a condition affecting multiple safety features of the vehicle. *tr
After bringing the car to get brakes checked, we were informed that the struts needed to be replaced on the car. this car is only driven on paved roads, in a well maintained area. the car has slightly less than 48000 miles on it. struts should last much longer on a car when the driven in the environment we live in. *tr
The brake and abs light are on, the speedometer and rpm meter goes to 0 when i was driving at 40 mph. it also happened when i was stopped in park. the a/c also don't work. the fault is intermittent. *tr
The brake and abs lights came on. the speedometer and odometer fell to zero. sometimes the odometer would jump up and down for a few seconds. the temperature gauge drops to zero. the engine sounds like it's about to turn off but does not. a/c does not give off cold air. gear light indicator goes off or indicates drive gear no matter on what gear. *tr

When entering my garage, the car automatically accelerated crashing through the back wall of the garage. i applied the brake but they didn't appear to work as the car was accelerating too fast. the car finally came a stop in the backyard against a fence post that was in concrete. *tr
Contact stop lamp switch in brake pedal assembly failed causing shift lever to become locked in "park" position and vehicle brake lights to become inoperative. appears to be an identical problem to nhtsa campaign # 12v091000. *tr
During normal operation of a 2009 toyota camry le with 2.4l 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed automatic transmission on the highway traveling approximately 60 mph, the speedometer suddenly dropped to 0 and the abs and brake lights on the dash board illuminated. the car did not cease normal operation and the brakes appeared to still function and the car was drivable as normal. the speedometer needle did not move and the abs and brake lights stayed illuminated for several minutes with no noticeable change in braking ability. then, the speedometer suddenly jumped back to 60 mph and appears to operate properly. at the same time, the abs and brake lights on the dashboard turned off. there were no noticeable changes in the operation of the car. that the same night, the exact same symptoms returned 2 more times just as they had occurred before with no warning at all. during one episode, the lights illuminated during a complete stop and the speedometer was inactive after leaving the stop. again, after a few minutes, the speedometer returned to correct operation and the abs and brake lights on the dash board turned off. *tr
Went to have brakes replaced since they were squeeking and a few times i put on the brakes and it skipped and was told that all the struts were leaking and calipers were bad. took for 2nd opinion and was told that was practically impossible and very rare. they looked at car and changed brakes and now in 2 months later my brakes are squeaking just as bad again. *tr
I turned on my toyota camry 2009 hybrid in the garage and was immediately met by numerous warning lights, an audible warning buzzer, and a message in the dash message center that read "check vsc." i was going to drive the car to a mechanic but discovered that when i backed out of the garage that there was no braking action. they had completely failed. the car was placed on a computer which provided error code c1256 and c1391. both codes indicate abs/vsc/trac malfunctions. i brought the vehicle to my local toyota dealer and supplied a computer print out of the error codes. the problem was diagnosed as an internal leak in the abs accumulator module resulting in a loss of hydraulic pressure to the brakes. cost of replacement with labor was quoted as $3,700.00. i did some research and discovered numerous complaints by other toyota owners with identical problem i encountered. i also discovered that toyota has redesigned the abs annunciator module. i contacted toyota corporate headquarters in california who denied any a problem with the part. if they are unaware of the problem, why did they redesign the part? this problem is extremely dangerous as in resulted in total brake failure. i was extremely lucky that my issue manifested itself while the car was parked and not at 70 mph on an interstate highway in heavy traffic. one website set up by someone who experienced this identical problem had thirty five entries in the guest book. everyone had the same problem. *tr
While driving the vehicle failed to stop while the brakes were depressed. the failure occurred multiple times on dry, well paved roads. brakes had to be depressed several times in order for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. the vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times for the failure. the failure was not corrected and the brakes continued to fail while attempting to stop the vehicle. *tr
I have a toyota camry 2009. my car went through the recall services, toyota had for the acceleration problems through one of their dealers. however, on 02/08/2013, i was involved in an accident, wherein i felt this problem myself. on a busy road i may have been driving between 35-40 mph, when all of a sudden, when i applied brakes, my car wouldn't stop but accelerated to maybe double the speed and hit the car in front of me. it appeared as if there are no brakes in the car.the impact was so severe, that i am still nervous and shaken up with the incident. the person driving the car i hit, thought i was speeding. but it definitely was the acceleration problem. this problem has not yet resolved and could lead to many more accidents. i have reported this problem to toyota dealership and on their suggestion to the toyota customer experience team. i was extremely lucky, that there were no physical injuries in the accident, but it could have been fatal. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that when driving approximately 45 mph and depressing the brakes, the vehicle would shake violently. the vehicle was not inspected by the dealer or an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 65,900. the current mileage was unknown.
At speeds over above 60 mph the car pulls hard to the left.this was reported to the dealer. i had to replace the rear brakes because the right rear brake froze and destroyed the rotor. i had a full brake inspection and was told that they were ok. one week later the front brake locked up on the passenger and went on fire. the dealer tells me the caliper froze. now i have to replace all the pads and rotors on the front end. the is a serious and dangerous problem with this model camry. i have read endless reports of difficulty with controlling this car while braking at highway speeds. this is a braking issue not alignment. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, he noticed a ticking noise while turning the steering. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated the brakes would have to be replaced. after the repair the failure continued. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure was 132,000.
Car used mostly on highways, so brakes not used too much, slow down more using cruise control. 07.25.2011, at 32,600 miles, right rear brakepads were completely gone and start grinding on disc. three days before that this car was inspected for 30,000 miles and rear brakepads were at 4 mm. service advisor said they didn't inspect the brakepads three days before because i did not bought the tire rotation, so they just "visually inspect" and fill the paper with numbers just to be filled. 09.17.2011, at 34,400 miles, brakepads replaced again for noise after releasing the brake pedals which had also slightly vibration during releasing. this noise continue all the time after that, even after this brakepad replacement. 10.10.2013, at 61,400 miles, same right rear brakepads were completely gone after visually inspection done during tire rotation and those brake pads were in good shape 2-3 months before. service advisor tried to sell me many other thing instead to pay attention to my concern about camry's, and stated rear brakepads life is 30,000 miles, which i believe is not true. 10.27.2013, at 62,000 miles, during the trip on mountain parkway road when i use car brake all the time, same right rear wheel begun to make continuous noise 10-15 second after releasing the brake pedal. the right rear wheel was hot, the other wheel have normal temperature. 11.04.2013, at 62,900 went back to toyota service and they found the emergency brake (which they stated is combined with rear pedal brake system) cable too tight and adjusted. i believe i paid the brakepads twice and rotors once because they don't care about customers and want you back for more money, for their negligence, and because toyota car reliability is just a story. i read here more scary issue with rear brakes at high speed and i want people to know about this issue. *tr
I had picked up a passenger about 1 1/2 hours from my home. i was returning home & noticed that the gas pedal was accelerating even tho i was pressing the brake. i couldn't stop the car& a curvy road was ahead along with a cliff. my option was to go over the cliff or go into possible oncoming traffic to try to stop the vehicle. i opted to try to turn the car into a nearby driveway. luckily no oncoming traffic was close enough to hit my car as i did this. the driveway was slanted & as i turned into the driveway i smacked into a snow bank which tore my front bumper off. luckily there were no personal injuries. i reported this to toyota & my insurance ( at the time of the accident i had heard about a toyota recall having to do with gas pedal but it had been a while & i hadn't received notification of the recall affecting my vehicle). my personal car insurance covered the $3000 worth of damage to the bumper radiator, grill, etc. over 4 years later & i still haven't recovered my deductible from toyota for a known defect in the pedal! had i been notified timely of the recall affecting my vehicle this could have been avoided! instead, i had to cover the cost to repair damage out of my pocket & i had whiplash for a few weeks caused by a known issue toyota knew of! i'm furious & disappointed that i chose a toyota! *tr
