We have classified the 24 complaints from 2005 Toyota Camry about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
While parking car and applying brake, vehicle continued to slowly accelerate and pushed in a tin wall housing the furnance room of a gym. car rested on the furnance and a gas line. toyota dist. manager said he couldn't find any defects and couldn't duplicate problem so said their hands were tied. nothing done. *jb
There's always a hesitation in transmission. *tr
I bought a brand new 2005 4-cylinder camry in 2004 after owing a 1988 with 256,000 miles and being extremely happy with it. however, i was dissatisfied with my new camry only after having it for a week when i started noticing how it would hesitate from taking off from a dead stop and when turning corners. i still can??t figure what turning corners has to do with speed. i had to change my driving habits because it was getting dangerous. i now have to allow longer a few more seconds to turn in front of traffic, in case it hesitates since it doesn't do this consistently. i took it in to toyota, the dealer i bought it from, 60 miles from where i live, twice and they couldn't seem to find the problem. they seemed to know of the problem, due to others reporting it and them sensing it themselves, but just acknowledged it wasn't an issue to be fixed. they gave us the name of their customer relations representative in california to contact, which we did. when first contacting him, he too made it sound like it was very important and he would immediately take care of this issue and get back with us. the next thing we heard from him was the same thing we had already heard, this isn't a problem, this is normal, there is nothing we can do for you. this may not be problem for them but it is for me and it sure sounds like it is a problem for an awful lot of others out there that are complaining on this website too. you ask what has been done to correct the failure, nothing by toyota!!! *nm
I bought a new 2005 toyota camry se 3.3 5 speed auto. it has a hesitation when accelerating from a slow down. when trying to merge it is very unnerving. the check engine light came on the first 3000 miles and a air/fuel sensor was replaced. the hesitation is still not predictable and still occurs. a sulfur smell sometimes occurs also. *jb
Purchased a 2005 toyota camry le and i am experiencing the exact same transmission problems. at about 24-30 mph it will rev to about 3000-4000 rpms before it switches to 2nd gear. also when slowing down the car will jerk into gear. on the highway when trying to pass cars it will just ignore my request for about 3 seconds. this is a dangerous car!!! took to dealer and they stated it is working as designed. this is not acceptable and toyota needs to do something about it before someone gets killed. jb
Since the first month i purchased my 2005 4-cylinder camry the acceleration pedal does not immediately engage and the transmission occasionally slips then makes contact for acceleration. especially troublesome in tight areas such as parking lots where i have had close calls with other vehicles close to hitting me due to this hesitation. my toyota dealer after about 4 - 5 visits have stated that since other camry's in parking lot do the same, it is o.k. this is not acceptable since there have been times on turning left or right that transmission has slipped making it hard to move along. the dealership did replace a solenoid valve after continually badgering them and that didn't help. they say problem could be in computer box to transmission (that cannot be accessed by technicians) is set at factory and cannot be adjusted. all this computerized has made it difficult to make any corrections that a customer complains about. the other issue is the thumping noise on driver and passenger windows make when going down. again they said that other camry's do it, so it is fine. that is not a way to build a car. both of these issues have been going on since the first month i purchased vehicle. *jb
My 2005 4-cylinder toyota camry has delayed accelerator and rough shifting of transmission. by delayed accelerator i mean that you have to press accelerator pedal about 1/4" to 1/2" before engine engages. this has been dangerous in parking lots where slow driving makes it difficult to keep engine at safe speed. the transmission also shifts roughly and downshifts hard when decelerating down a hill. i contacted dealership where i purchase my vehicle and say that is the way it is since it is computerized. since there are no cables to adjust, i am out of luck. i also contacted 800 number for toyota customer service and they were no help. they did mention that there was a technical service bulletin for same problem on the camry v-6. it seems that the 4-cylinder has same problem but not enough complaints to warrant a technical bulletin.
Traveling down hill at approximately 45 mph just slightly pressing the brake pedal vehicle will down shift and jurk steering wheel. if conditions where right i may loose control. this has happened numerous times. spoke to several dealers and they say it is normal.
Dt: on 5/27/05 while driving and after stopping the accelerator would hesitate, then the transmission would jerk into gear. problem was intermittent. cannot make a left hand turn or right hand turn becuase the car hesitates so much it wont go. took car to dealer, and delaer reported that the problem was normal. dealer reported nothing could be done. toyota reported they were looking at the problem and will report any developments.*ak
I bought a 2005 camry xle last month. the transmission is completely faulty and there is no response from the company. the electronically controlled transmission (ect) is slow to respond. there is a delay when you press the gas so you neven know when the car will actually kick into gear. this is not a problem except when you enter a highway or try avoid a crash.
Car continually hesitates then surges forward especially at speeds below 40 mph and also when ac is on. dealer has no fix. i provided printout of nhtsa reports but i was told that's just the way the car is. no choice but to get rid of this new car. *nm
Dt: 2005 toyota camry. the consumer stated that the vehicles transmission was unpredictable. when revving the engine nothing would happen and then all of a sudden the vehicle would jerk. this has occurred since purchasing the vehicle. it was taken to the dealership at 600 miles. according to the dealership, there is no problem, it is operating under normal specifications. this happens mostly during acceleration from a stop or slow speed. *ak *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota camry. while driving in second gear (mph unknown) the transmission would downshift when he accelerated. the dealer reprogrammed the transmission chip however, the failure occurred after driving 6,000 miles. the current mileage was 33,000 and the failure mileage was 6,000.
Contact with the dealership has been fruitless as far as resolving the problem. i was told that they are aware of complaints, but try the company line that it was engineered to perform this way. basically, the transmission will not gear down satisfactorily, until it comes to a complete stop. a slow turn and then acceleration will 'always' result in 'lagging' of gear changes, then it will finally gear down and lurch into the lower gear. it's aggravating and can be downright dangerous in tight crowded freeway driving conditions where it's not unusual to have to slow down and then speed up without getting rear-ended.
While driving first 100 miles the transmission is shifting eratically, upshift and downshifts not changing smoothly. *ak
I bought my new 2005 toyota camry xle v6 from geis toyota, yorktown height, ny. i have noticed that the rpm meter on the dashboard display keeps going up while running the car, although the accelerator pedal is not depressed. i have complained this to the dealership. they told me that the vehicle need break in period, and the problem will go away. but the problem persisted. i do vehicle maintenance regularly as per factory recommendation. last year i took the car to fordham toyota service, manhattan, ny for same problem. the dealership told me that the vehicle need a complete tune-up which they did for a charge. but the problem remained and i got used to press brake pedal to slow down the car to take care of this problem. *tr
Bought camry 05 new and had intermittent vibration in the front . have had all most all front end replaced, motor and tran mounts, cv drive lines .bearing, etc . i had the car down at the toyota dealer many time over the years they could not find any thing bad ... i my self checked out for lose parts found nothing till i moved left side cv drive line and i could move the drive line up and down and around that goes into the transfer-case. i made a appointment again to the toyota dealer and had the shop foreman look a this movement..he said this was normal and moves less then most 05 camrys. this vibration happen at 40 and up.
The vehicle stalled and did not shift properly. the vehicle was just purchased. *ak the vehicle would hesitate when the accelerator was depressed. *sc *jb there was a delay in acceleration or slow response time from a low speed to a faster speed while going up a hill. *jb
2005 toyota se v6 has noticeable hesitation problems at low speeds. could be dangerous at faster speeds. toyota currently has no fix, according to the dealer. *jb
My wife and i purchased a 2005 toyota camry xle v6 5sp auto in nov 2004. shortly after taking delivery, we started to notice hesitation in the transmission while trying to accelerate from a stop and after slowing down in traffic. we also felt a delay when attempting to go into passing gear. this delay would last up to a couple of seconds. after the delay was felt, the car would accelerate rapidly. this would cause a jolt to the passengers and driver. it seems as though the transmission is not getting the power demand from the accelerator equipment quickly enough. we have taken it to the dealer twice. the problem seems to be getting worse. the last statement from the service manager was " i drove the car and clearly understand your complaint concerning the hesitation. that is the nature of this new technology. we cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle" the service manager denied they had any other complaints from anyone concerning this problem. that's when i started searching the web. after collecting complaints from several web sites such as this, i confronted the service manager. he stated he was unaware of the complaints and gave me the 1-800-# for toyota. we have contacted toyota and got a case #. they claim there are two tsb's associated with the problem. my question is "why doesn't the dealer already have the tsb's" my wife is the primary driver and has complained of two near misses caused from this problem. we will give toyota this opportunity to correct the problem, but i am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling concerning a fix. next step is to get rid of the dangerous vehicle. *nm
Vehicle revs and lunges when stopped and in drive. this occurs regularily and the dealership told my wife that it was "inherrent" with the camry. it happens frequently.*ak
Purchased new 2005 camry se. immediately reported problems with severe pulling to the left (across lanes if not holding steering wheel firmly.) also, complained of intermittent hard shifts between 20 and 40 mph. as if someone had hit the car from rear. this causes a broad period of uncontrolled acceleration as the downshift occurs and the revs increase. the tires also wore out after 8,000 due to pull. took to numerous repair facilities and they all said the alignment was fine. i was never contacted about toyota service bulletins. car now has 40,000 miles. dealer says out of warranty and tsbs are only good for one year. applicable tsbs are: st005r-01, tc003-05, and st002r-04. otherwise love car. have had over 12 toyotas and this is first with a problem. *tr
Excessive brake pedal effort required to slow vehicle at approximately 30 mph. engine "pushing" vehicle whilst braking. poor fuel economy (avg 20 mpg for 4-cyl auto. posted figures 24/34). erratic transmission shifting. noticeable delay when accelerator pedal depressed. numerous near-accidents due to delay in acceleration.*ak
when the overdrive is activated, the rpm's spike between three and six thousand rpm's. this happens during normal driving conditions. it is an intermittent problem. we have contacted the dealer on two separate occasions and they are unable to find the problem. it started around the beginning of april, five months after purchasing the vehicle. my concern with this problem is that it may spike at an inopportune time causing an accident. when the rpm's spike i lose accelorator control. the vehicle milage is 14697.
2005 toyota camry le v6 gradually speed up to about 25 mph. stop short (you don't have to lock them up, but stop quickly) then accelerate again. when i stop short, my transmission shifts into neutral, and it takes about 3 seconds to shift back into first. when it does, i get quite a jolt. brought car back to dealer, they are saying it is normal. *nm
I'm concerned the toyota braking issues go deeper than late model prius. my 2005 camry le v6 exhibits similar characteristics as being described today - brake failure when driving over uneven, irregular or rough pavement. when this occurs, the brake pedal stiffens and braking action ceases. i've learned to press down v-e-r-y hard on the pedal during this intermittent behavior. had taken to the dealer more than once. the complaint along with harsh shifting of the transmission which manifests in the engine over-revving while not actually engaging into any gear, then the transmission finally engages making the vehicle go further/faster than desired/anticipated. toyota indicated the issues were "an operational characteristic of the vehicle", being dismissive in their response demonstrating a corporate culture of arrogance. have spoken with toyota service managers in henderson, nv, santa monica and thousand oaks, ca re: the transmission and they all have similar responses... rolling their eyes toward the sky and lamenting, "ohhh, that v6 camry transmission" as if some sort of factory 'inside joke'. these are clearly known issues the factory has chosen to do nothing about, thus the service manager's hands are tied. (had been extremely pleased with my former '95 camry to the tune of 300,000 miles.) it's disappointing toyota has ceased to be the honorable company they once were. *cn
Re 2005 toyota camry v-6 xle 5-speed automatic transmission (a/t), 1mz-fe engine. vehicle purchased nov 30 2004. from day of purchase through current, a/t has not shifted smoothly as it was advertised to. following depends on accelerator pressure - does not occur always. hesitant & sometimes harsh from 1st to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd periodically, in 35 to 45 mph range, rough shift down and then back up. at times the hesitant shift from 2nd to 3rd has put me in an unsafe situation. it is not a "sure/positive" shift - it winds up before it engages. prior vehicle was 1999 camry v6 - no shifting problems. *jb
Car hesitate after slowing down with foot off pedal. if there is a need to accelerate take 2-3 second before abruptly engage. *jb
Whenever i applied the brake pedal at low speeds between 1-30 mph as approaching an intersection, a stop sign or an immediate brake the transmission switches gears, and the rpms increased. the brake pedal depressed all the way to the floor and the car jolted forward, and did not stop until the brakes were applied again. fortunately, i have not had an accident. others have. i have had the defective brake problem since i bought the car new in 2004. i had the dealer's repair technicians drive the car on multiple occasions, they said they were not able to recreate the problem. this was not how anti-lock brakes were supposed to work. toyota needed to research this defect thoroughly and announce a recall before others get hurt or killed.*ak
We bought our 2005 camry le v6 in the fall of 2004. from day one, we noticed the hesitation. when leaving a stop sign, for example, it would lag for a split second, then suddenly jerk into gear. the first week we called the dealer and was told this is normal for the first 1000 miles. when it continued we were told it was the computer. we mentioned it at every warranty check and they said they never saw the problem. we wish we knew that we're not the only ones so we would have pursued it earlier. toyota never mentioned knowing transmission problems in the 2005 camry. now our daughter has to learn how to drive! *jb
1. we purchased a new 2004 toyota camry xle from beaverton toyota (beaverton, oregon) 2. here are the three problems: a. when going down a hill, on dry pavement, with the brakes being "feathered", with no additional foot pedal pressure, the brakes suddenly engage and the brake pedal pushes back on the drivers foot. b. after braking and then accelerating, the brakes do not release after the brake pedal has been released. this causes the engine to hesitate until the brakes release. this happens especially in heavy stop and go traffic. c. with very little pressure on the accelerator, the engine hesitates which causes the transmission to downshift multiple times running the rpms up to the redline. 3. i have reported these problems to beaverton toyota service department multiple times and the hillsboro (oregon) toyota service department one time. they admit there are problems, but since toyota has not issued a "service bulletin" they can do nothing to fix the problems. i have driven another 2004 camry at the hillsboro toyota dealership and none of the problems listed above occurred.
