Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

I was driving on the service road of the interstate highway approximately 20 mph. i felt the car jerk forward slightly followed by numerous warning indicator lights including brake light, check vsc system and abs. i immediately tried to brake because there was a car approximately 10 feet in front of me. the brake pedal would not depress. it felt as if the brakes had gone out. the lights then disappeared a few minutes later and brakes worked properly. i had just purchased the car six days earlier. interestingly, when i test drove the car, the same event happened, but i was tapping my brakes during a slow right turn yielding to traffic, and didn't notice the loss of brakes. 2 events in 6 days. my car is now at the toyota service center. i am afraid to drive it with this intermittent brake issue. i have to believe based on reading other complaints and recalls that toyota is aware of this issue and isn't properly concerned about expediting the recall. this is a serious issue with potential deadly consequences. i hope the recall is issued soon. my car is not drivable in it's current defective condition. *tr

I was driving my 2007 toyota camry hybrid and went to brake and my dash emergency lights, brake light, check vsc light, abs, and traction control light went on and my brakes did not work. i was able to slow down without incident. took it to two mechanics then finally to a toyota dealership. the toyota dealership could not fins anything wrong with it and sent me on my way. two weeks later it happened again. my wife was driving just over 40 mph and applied the brakes and they did not work. she was able to swerve into a parking lot and cruise to a stop. the brakes work intermittently and come and go. moving the car to a parking spot a few minutes later the brakes did not work when i started to move the car, but while moving it the warning lights went off and the brakes started to work again. this is a recurring problem that you do not know when the brakes will go out. the is a serious issue that needs to be looked at immediately. *tr

Started car up and "check vsc system" signal comes on, after doing research turns out thousands are having this issue. it does not show up on a computer. i contacted toyota and they told me it will cost 2,800. i feel this is an issue they know about because some customers say their replacement part looks nothing like the regular. now the car shakes when it brakes. *tr

For the last couple of months have noticed the brake pedal "pulsing" on starting the car and sometimes on stopping at intersections. then the brake warning light came on intermittently whilst driving but with no impact on the brakes and then whilst exiting the freeway all the brake warnings lights and check vsc system message was displayed with loss of assisted braking. took it straight to the dealership but on braking to enter the inspection bay all warning lights went out. toyota technician couldn't find an error code in the history and after driving 15 miles the warning lights didn't come back on. technician did comment that they'd had other camry hybrids with similar issues and said the abs actuator needed replacing at a cost of $3,400! i was told that toyota are using a different part on later model camry hybrids which in itself seems an acknowledgement that the part is faulty. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota camry hybrid. the contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph, the brake pedal was applied numerous times before the vehicle would respond. in addition, the abs and vsc warning indicators were illuminated. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 111,000. *tr

As i was slowing for a stop sign, the check vsc system light came on and i had to push harder on the brakes than i normally do. i turned the car off and after a short time restarted it and the car proceeded normally. about two weeks later as i was driving about 50 mph, the brake, vsc, and abs warning lights all came on. i pulled into a turn lane and slowed to a stop. again i had to push the pedal harder than normal. *tr

I turned on my car after dropping my daughter to school in the morning (around 8:30 am). i noticed the dash board is showing "check vsc system" and the brake warning light is on. i tried to drive in slow speed (10 mph) and pressed on brake but the car is not stopping as fast as i expect. i tried to drive up to about 10mph again and applied brake; the result is same: car fails to stop fast. the warning lights were still on at this point. i pulled over by the curb, opened the hood and visually inspected levels of brake fluid. fluid level looked normal. when i sat back in the driving seat, i noticed all the warning lights are off. then tried driving and applied brake. everything is normal. i scheduled an appointment with the dealership for wednesday 3/5/2014. i suspect something is not right with my vehicle. *tr

While driving with my wife in our 2007 toyota camry hybrid on a surface street, i applied the brakes and realized that the car was not slowing down. the brakes had failed, and when i looked at the dashboard, the display said, "check vsc system". the lights for the "brake" and the abs lights were also illuminated. luckily we did not have any cars immediately in front of us, or to the right, so we were able to change lanes and exit on to a side road. the brake system came back online after about 10 seconds, and we were once again able to slow the car down. this was a extremely terrifying experience, and i have since then found out that many others have faced the same problem, on the same make and model. this has happened a few different times in the past to both my wife and myself, but fortunately we were backing out of a parking spot whenever it happened. this prompted us to take our car in to the dealer and asked them to check the brake system. we have also asked the dealer to check the brake system whenever we have taken the car in for routine maintenance. on both occasions, the dealer has never detected any issue with the braking system, and we have continued driving our car unaware of the potential risk. we need to use our car, but are unable to because it is now a safety hazard. i urge toyota to issue a recall and fix this problem immediately as it directly impacts human lives. after researching this issue, i have found that the cost to fix it is between $2500 and $3000. our car is nearing 7 years old, and the cost of the repair is nearly 30% of the car's worth. it is ridiculous to expect a consumer to foot the cost of this bill, when instead it should be toyota's responsibility, due to the fact that this is a manufacturer defect and is a risk to people's lives. *tr

Driving down the freeway in the rain an extremely loud alarm went off and the vsc, brake, abs, and triangle lights were on without my foot being on the brake pedal. the car would not stop and fortunately i was able to slow down without incident. i took the car to toyota on the following monday in dry weather and was getting off the freeway and the left front brake locked up and skidded 30 feet. this time i almost hit 2 cars but was able to steer clear. the dealer told me it was the actuator. this is the 3rd time this car was in for those lights going off and disables the power generators for help in slowing down. it also happens in the car wash. i have never felt the abs work on this car since i've owned it. it always set the code and disables it. it's in the shop right now as i'm writing this waiting for me to say fix it for $3000. ? i was hoping nhtsa would investigate this car before it's fixed to see the problem everybody is complaining about. my wife says she will never drive this car again after its fixed. it was a very frightening situation. *tr

I turned on my car and i noticed a "check vsc system" light come on along with the "brake" light. i made sure my emergency brake was off and the warning lights remained on. i pulled away from my house and noticed that every time i went to brake, my brake felt hard and i could barely get it to move. i got about a mile away from my house and about 50 feet from an intersection i went to slow down, but my brake was still hard and when i tried to brake it failed to work for about 5 seconds until it finally kicked in. there were no cars in front of me, otherwise i would have probably hit a car for sure. i made sure to keep my distance for the rest of my trip. on my way home from work i noticed the "check vsc system" and "brake" light were no longer on, and my brake felt back to normal. *tr

Driving down interstate, all of a sudden the following warning lights came on: 1 - check vsc system 2 - red "brake" indicator (brake system warning light) 3 - yellow indicator (brake system warning light) 4 - master warning light 5 - abs indicator. continued the rest of the 3 miles towards home but brakes did not seem responsive. took to automotive shop 2 miles away where they checked codes and quoted us a repair bill of $3500 for replacement of abs accumulator. called toyota complaint line on 2/26/2014 and was told do not drive car. we had car towed to toyota dealer and are awaiting determination as to the repair and if toyota will cover costs for repair. *tr

Brake light and "check vsc" system illuminated while exiting interstate. braking force dropped by about 75% as if only rear brakes were functional. was able to slow eventually and pull over and shut off car. restarted car after a few minutes and neither brake light nor check vsc came on. slowly drove car to dealership and am awaiting diagnosis. *tr

Purchased 2007 toyota camry hybrid on 2/19/14. on 2/22/14 i was driving 52 mph on a freeway at 0 grade when check vsc system notification, abs, brake, master warning and traction control lights all came on. when attempting to brake while exiting the freeway, the brakes did not work adequately when depressed to stop. i had to depress fully to the floor in order to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. it also took over 80 yards to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. i cruised through a red light due to this-i am very fortunate not to have been in an accident or worse, killed. vehicle is now parked in driveway and is not driven. toyota needs to address this danger to life. *tr

I was driving at approximately 65mph on the interstate when the vsc warning came on my instrument panel along with the parking brake indicator light, the low tire pressure warning light, the abs warning light, and the traction control light. i immediately pulled over and did not notice any hesitation in the braking system. since i was on a trip home, i continued my trip. throughout the trip i noticed that the braking became more difficult, in that i had to apply more pressure to the brake pedal in order to stop. i took the car to my toyota dealership where they diagnosed the problem as being a leak in the brake actuator. they quoted me a $3000 cost estimate and informed me that the car is unsafe to drive due to the unpredictable braking. this seems like a problem that many camry hybrid owners are having. i am fortunate to have arrived home safely! *tr

Check vsc system notification as well as the abs, breaks, warning and traction control lights all turned on while on the interstate. when brought into the dealer they need to replace the abs accumulator. *tr

My cars brake system is making a clunking noise, and i'm seeing a loss of breaking ability. while at a stop light with the brakes depressed it is particularly noticeable and loud. finally the check vsc system warning came on the dash so i took it to the dealer for diagnoses. the diagnosis was that the abs actuator is making the noise and the accumulator pressure is lower than spec. the quote to repair it was $5104.61. *tr

I was on my way to work driving approx 40 miles per hour, all of a sudden my dash says "check vsc system",red brake light turns on,abs light turns on and low tire pressure light turns on.i immediately check my brakes,i have no brakes! i just kept pumping trying to get anything out of them. i started moving over to my right (nearly side swiped a car) and pulled into a strip mall.after calming down,i drove slowly around the parking lot to see if i had brakes. all of the lights stayed on but my brakes were back,i continued the last mile to work. at this point, as i used the brakes, my rotors felt extremely warped. after researching online if anyone else had had the same problem, i found tons of people having the exact same issue, "c1391". i called my local toyota dealer, explained the problem and what i thought it might be,he took my vin# and gave me a quote of $3200 to repair. at that point,i called toyota corporate offices and filed a complaint, they did some research to see if any of the issue was a recall,of course it wasn't. i told the guy that i guess in order for it to be a recall there needs to be an overwhelming amount of accidents to occur,or people need to die,or a class action lawsuit needs to happen. he took down all of my info, told me i needed to take it to toyota to be diagnosed and then to call the toyota"out of warranty assistance department" for possible help with the bill. i took the car to toyota,it was diagnosed just as all of the other cars i read about were "c1391" internal abnormal leak with the break actuator. between toyota corporate office and toyota they were able to help me out with some of the bill even though the car was no longer under warranty. it wasn't completely covered in the least bit, but it made it a little more manageable. *tr

While slowing down for a stop light speed was around 45 mph i experienced a sudden drop in brake pressure causing me to apply hard pressure in order to keep from hitting the vehicle in front of me stopping but inches from the other vehicles bumper. when the loss of brake pressure was happening i also noticed multiple lights came on and after the stop on the display there was a check vsc system message that will not extinguish. this morning it is still in the same condition. i called the service center and they told me a diagnostic check would be around 105.00 dollars. i have since done research and have seen multiple issues with this and the cost of repair(upwards of 3,000) is ridicules. if this is a manufactures defect and know problem toyota needs to do the right thing and fix the issue before someone has a major accident. this item abs actuator needs to be looked at as the culprit. i need my car to get to work but who can afford 3,000.00 at the drop of a hat and do i want to risk my life. *tr

While drive i hear a intermittent beep and when applying brakes either does not brake, brake pedal gets stuck and cannot brake or suddenly brakes also increased brake pedal effort i had to use the emergency brakes in order to brake at all times because the brakes not works, i got all warning lights on with check vsc system i went to a toyota dealership to check the issue and they told me that the brake actuator pump does not work now in order to fix it i have to pay almost 3500 to replace that part that's robbery from toyota i see from different forums that part breaks on toyota hybrids easily and still toyota does not want to recall that part and i know toyota change the part address the issue but still no recall on ours cars and to pay 3500 for manufacture defect is outrageous. *tr

While traveling on the interstate, about 80% of my brakes gave out and i lost stability. my abs indicator and the message "check vsc system" came on. as i came to a stop, my brakes jerked a bit and i came to a sudden and aggressive stop. i turned the car off and restarted it, and everything drove fine. this same thing happened sporadically about 20 times over the next couple of months, but now my abs light and check vsc indicator are on at all times. my brakes are diminished most of the time down to 50%, and every now and again, my car will come to a really hard stop as i brake. i had a toyota dealer look at it, and i was told my actuator was out and would need to be replaced at a cost of $3,000. that is just for the part, not including labor. i only paid $15,000 for the car. on top of that, they aren't even using the 2007 model actuators, they are using a later model, which tells me they know something is wrong with the 2007. *tr

Check vsc light with intermittent loss of braking. toyota says needs new abs actuator at over $2500. *tr

While driving to work on 1/27/14 my brake, abs, check vsc and red warning lights turned on. it was almost impossible to brake. i had to pull off and turn the vehicle off and hope the issue would resolve it. after a few times it finally did. i have taken it to the dealer in the past and it was diagnosed as my abs actuator having a leak and it was replaced. there still appears to be an issue. additionally when braking at any point in time, there is a stutter when under 5 mph, which i was told was due to this same issue which still hasn't been resolved. *tr

I was driving on street that had several potholes in both lanes. lanes were blocked by barrels because of the roadwork being done. there were too many potholes to dodge and none seemed significantly bigger than the rest. since i was unable to swerve, because of traffic going the other way in the lane beside me, i hit a series of potholes. after the last one, which seemed a little bigger than the others, i heard a beep and the display read, "check vsc," which i know from the last time this happened means "vehicle stability control." the parking brake light seemed to come on at that time. i could not get the car to roll any but instead had to hit the accelerator to move at all. the brake was not as powerful, so i had to be sure to brake in plenty of time. the steering seemed more restricted also, and there was a high-pitched buzzing that continued all the time unless the car was off with all doors shut. i live close by, so i was able to get my car back home but did not think it was safe to drive it to the dealership. i had aaa tow it a few days later. they told me at the dealership that a part of the anti-lock brake system would have to be replaced. they later found that one of the lines involved in keeping the engine cool was leaking and the water pump had to be replaced. *tr

The check vsc light came on in december. the dealer could not find anything wrong. the warning light came on again on 1/21/14. the dealer said that the brake accumulator was defective and could result in a failure of the abs. it was replaced at a cost of more than $3000. i am a careful driver and have never had the abs engage on this car, so something is not right when such a key (and expensive) part fails. this should be recalled. *tr

'check vsc system' along with brake light warning, abs warning, and pretty much every other warning light possible came on my 2007 camry hybrid in january 2014. the brakes began to bark like a dog when pressed and frequently the brakes would give out and i would have to put the pedal to the floor to stop the car. the car was unsafe to drive so i took it to the toyota dealer and was quoted 3900 dollars to fix the issue. it seems to be a widespread issue and toyota needs to take care of the issue, but they have not. *tr

Approximately 3 weeks ago the "check vsc system" warning came on in our 2007 camry hybrid. we noticed no affect to the driving of the car, and since the owners manual said almost nothing about this warning (simply said to take it to dealer), we drove the car as usual. we then had an incident where, approaching a stop sign, the brakes failed to work at first: i had to pump the brakes 3+ times in order to make them engage. we then took it to a toyota dealership to have a diagnosis. after spending $116 on a diagnostic (only way they would tell us the root cause) we learned that there is an actuator failure which has a repair cost of over $3000. upon receiving this information we investigated the vsc issue online and discovered that this is a very common problem for camry hybrids. our camry is a little over 5 years old and only has 57,950 miles. it is absolutely unacceptable that we should have to replace this very expensive part on a car with this few miles. given the high frequency of complaints regarding the vsc failure it is our opinion toyota should take the blame for their faulty part and cover the cost of the repair. *tr

While driving to work on friday 1/10/14 my brake, abs, check vsc and red warning lights turned on. i took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed as my abs actuator having a leak and needing to be replaced for almost $3500. this is ridiculous if this many people are having the same issue regarding the same part on the same exact vehicle. this is not what i expected when i purchased a toyota and this may be my last. *tr

While driving to work on 1/10 the brake, abs, check vsc system and red warning light came on. when taken to the dealer it was diagnosed as my abs actuator pump leaking and bleeding and needing to be replaced. not only is this an expensive repair but my power braking was gone. this is dangerous when you drive on a major highway everyday and night at speeds of 60+. this is disappointing for toyota and disappointing that it has not been recalled yet. apparently someone needs to be injured badly in order for it to be a problem. *tr

Was driving about 40 mph when all of a sudden the "check vsc system" lit up as well as the brake, and multiple others lights came on. my first instinct was to hit the brakes, which went all the way to the floor. i had to cross over 3 lanes of traffic in order to try to get to a side road. this has happened several times since then. the first incident, i called performance toyota in memphis, tenn. i slowly drove it there. they drove it for 20 miles, charged me $126.00, and told me nothing was wrong, and that i must have hit a bump causing the 3 of the tires to spin. i don't recall hitting any bumps.they checked my brakes, which were replaced less than a year ago, and said they were in great shape and i was safe taking it on the road. told them i was suppose to go out of town the next day. the second time it happened, @ 1 week later, my husband was driving it. i called performance toyota to report it and was told to bring it in when all the lights are lit up. i am too scared to drive this car! *tr

Approx mid january 2014 while going down the hwy about 40 miles from home my vsc light came on and i lost almost all the use of my brakes, which really frighten me. i am single and have no family around to help. i got off the hwy and went very slow. the light went off before i got home and i didn't have another problem with it until dec 2014 while going to work. the light came on and off twice before i got to work and i lost brakes use. then it happen again first week jan. 2015. it has happen twice recently and i'm getting worried about driving the car. you never know when it might happen and it is very dangerous. i looked it up on the internet and saw quite a few other people were having the same problem. i can't afford to have it fixed. i hope your investigation can help correct this problem before someone get hurt or worse killed. i has to be a defect in the vehicle if this many people are having this problem. thank you for your time. *tr

While driving at a low rate of speed the brake light on my dashboard came on and a warning 'check vsc' along with other lights on my dashboard all came on and the brakes no longer worked as usual. i had to apply considerable pressure to the brake pedal and was able to coast on to a side street. the lights on my dashboard all went off and the car then functioned as normal. i drove to the store i was going to went in for about 15 minutes then returned to my vehicle. as i was backing out of my parking spot the same issue as stated above happened again. i drove the car straight to price leblanc toyota, my dealership. without turning the ignition off i handed the car over to the service department. they were unable to find a code from the car that would tell them what the issue was. they kept the car for 3 days and were unable to recreate the problem. *tr

Check vsc light, brake light, stability light all flash and abs doesn't work. *tr

While driving the "check vsc system" light came on and i had to stand on the gas pedal to get the car to stop. there we no brakes on this vehicle. a buzz stays on continuously with the light on also but to get the car to stop, you need to stand on the pedal with both feet and push down as hard as the pedal will go. i took it to the dealer where i was told the brake actuator needs replaced and the part alone costs $2500. the part must be a new one instead of getting one from the junk yard because the old ones leak and toyota recognizes there is a problem so they redesigned it. everyone with a hybrid will have this problem eventually so why hasn't this car been recalled yet? *tr

Driving car through town when abs, red triangle. vsc lights lite up dashboard. lost steering and braking ability. coasted to stop in local shopping center parking lot. thank god i was there and not on interstate or highway. took to dealer and they told me braking actuator failed and repair would be $3200. not covered by 10 year/100k hybrid warranty although braking system specific for hybrids. choices are: trade in car to dealer and let them fix it, drive it around until i kill someone or myself(not happening) or play the lottery tonight and maybe i can fix car tomorrow (also not happening) or swipe the plastic and end up paying over 4k for the repair......very disappointing for a toyota to cost this much in repairs with so little mileage. will never buy another toyota. *tr

I was pulling into a parking space (in a parking garage) and when i attempted to brake, the car continued to accelerate. it was finally stopped when it smashed into steel cables in front of the parking space. *tr

While driving on crowed road (rt7 fairfax va) abs, brake, check engine and other warning lights came on. car was very difficult to drive and stop. almost went into a crash while trying to stop. the next day lights went off. then came on 2 days later. this was the 4th incident the dealer could not replicate the incident. . i understand looking at your web site toyota has a defective part which they refuse to recall? i understand it is a faulty actuator? when will a recall be issued? this is a dangerous situation. *tr

While coming to a stop before exiting a parking lot, the braking system was engaged in a normal fashion only to have the brake system shudder and then experience a loss of automatic brake assist. many lights on the dashboard, including the 'check vsc' light, illuminated along with a very audible warning sound. the dealership identified the problem as the abs brake actuator and related parts. the price to fix the issue was right near $3000 for parts and labor. *tr

While driving during rush hour traffic, the car's brake light came on and then 5-10 seconds later a "check vsc" messaged displayed on the message screen along with several warning lights (abs, traction control, and main warning). the brakes became very soft (like a car with no power brakes) but would slow the vehicle down. i slowed down and gave myself plenty of braking distance to get it home. after 10 minutes, the warning message and lights disappeared and the brakes returned to normal operations. this appeared to be a temporary glitch. since this first appeared, the problem has occurred 3 times while driving. the local toyota dealership determined that the abs actuator was failing and quoted me $3,100 to repair it. another symptom of this failure is a constant on/off buzzing noise coming from the abs actuator and a "chirping" noise when your foot is on the brake petal during a stop. the situation also appears to get worse when the temperature drops. i don't drive the vehicle anymore. there is no recall or service bulletin documenting this problem. the replacement part is the original design costing $2,750 and will fail again. i also contacted toyota about this problem and told them it was a major safety hazard. they offered some financial assistance but the repair is still going to be expensive. on this website and other internet forums, this problem is a common complaint for this vehicle. i believe the nhtsa needs to investigate this problem before a major accident or fatality occurs. i find this problem to be unacceptable for a toyota especially with only 70,500 miles on it. *tr

I was driving care and warning light came on to check the vsc system. per toyota service error code c1391 represented core vsc abs brake control module failure. full unit includes abs accentuator pump assembly and computer control. this case was reported to: toyota motor sales, usa, inc. your case is filed at our headquarters office under [xxx] and file #[xxx] searching the internet, multiple incidents of this were found. toyota has reportedly reconfigured this assembly since it has been failing, so the part to replace the current one is different than the one originally placed. here are a couple of links: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/105-camry-hybrid/401450-2007-tch-check-vsc-system-code-c1391.html http://www.faqs.org/car/toyota-camry-hybrid/service-brakes/ the customer service representative at the local toyota dealership said that they are keeping the part in stock since it is needing to be replaced. cost of the part is $2800 (approx.) plus labor to replace/bleed lines/reprogram etc. this seems to be a safety issue, since the brakes are harder to compress, the vehicle stability is compromised, multiple indicator lights are lit on the dashboard, etc. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

All sensor lights came on with "check vsc system" message. brakes felt mushy and it was harder to stop. took into dealership next day but lights had turned off. dealership scanned for computer codes but found nothing. everything fine. 6 weeks later on 300 mile trip, same thing occurred. i had no choice but to continue on trip and return home a week later. took into dealership. now they state that there is an internal leak in the abs actuator and want $3,189.00 to fix. read where this part has been redesigned due to an engineering flaw in original part and where many other owners of this model have experienced same problem. the repair cost is outrageous. this makes my car dangerous to drive, but i cannot afford the fix. *tr

Driving about 25 mph and i was going to slow down to park on the curb and car had trouble stopping, the vsc system warning light went on and then the engine just died. had car checked out in december at toyota of redlands and said it was the brake actuator and cost to fix was going to be around $2800.00, i declined and they understood it was expensive. *tr

Please investigate the abs system on the hybrid 2007 camry. i almost killed myself about 2 months ago. i was going about 60mph when i hit on the brakes to slow down on a curve the brakes would not respond, it was like the brakes were really hard to step on, and to control the steering wheel. the lights to check the vsc system came on, check abs, the emergency brake light. after a few seconds everything would go back to normal. i have done extensive research and there are so many complaints with the same problems on the 2007 camry hybrid. please do something about it so toyota can recall and fix the problem before someone gets killed. after taking it to toyota for the last 5 months without finding a problem, because the computer would not register anything and they couldn't duplicate the problem, now they are saying its the abs system and it cost $4,000 to fix it. they are not doing anything to investigate the problem because they claim that not enough people have registered complaints. so i ask how many people have to die before we get any attention. *tr

Brakes fail... the pedal brake is put so hard to push when coming a light to vsc check system...im so angry to toyota ... but i still love my car ... i no use my car because is not secure for my family. *tr

I started my car one morning, and several warning lights came on: (emergency) brake light, red warning light, yellow warning light, traction control light and abs light. this warning came and went intermittently for some time, and now seems to be a permanent problem. the brakes feel jagged while pressing lightly, almost like the brake pads are gone, and the rotors are uneven. a dealership in oklahoma identified the problem to be with the "accumulator" for the abs system. this part and the labor to put it in will run me nearly $3000, a sum far too many car owners cannot afford, including myself. toyota has insisted that because my the part is out of 3yr/36000 mile warranty, they will not help in the cost of this repair. meanwhile, toyota has changed the original oem part, a tacit acceptance that the original is flawed, and needed to be re-engineered. i cannot believe the amount of people who have reported the same exact problem online with no recourse but to pay a phenomenal sum to have a part replaced that is known to have a dangerous defect.

While i was driving my check vsc light came on as well as many other brake lights on the instrument panel. i felt as though i had less control of the car at the time and my brakes would not work until i pressed them with severe force. after the first incident the lights would come on and off sporadically, each time we would lose the effectiveness of the brakes. in november the light came on as we were driving at speeds of about 65mph and has stayed on since. we have replaced the computer as well as the brake reservoir with no results. our car has been in and out of the toyota dealership and they cannot seem to fix the problem. *tr

I was driving home from work and brake to make a turn into the gate leading to my home and the brakes failed, even though the brake peddle was depressed to the floor. the car failed to slow or stop, thankfully there wasn't anyone in front of me or i would have definitely rear-ended them. the vehicle eventually stopped more than 400 meters away with me pumping the brakes! at the time vsc, abs & brake lights lit up the dash. i contacted toyota and inquired whether they were aware of this problem and they stated emphatically "no". after running diagnostic on the vehicle, i was informed that i had to pay $3000.00 to fix it. i couldn't afford to fix the car then so we used my daughters vehicle. last month i paid $3200.00 to have the car fixed! i also went online to find out if there were other people having this problem and found numerous complaints, including actual accidents and near misses like mine. there is definitely a problem with the 2007 camry hybrid braking system and toyota needs to issue a recall and fix the problem before lives are lost. they also need to refund those who have had to shell out this exorbitant amount of money to fix their defective part. brakes are a necessity and these are all accidents waiting to happen! toyota needs to held accountable ...yet again for their defective braking system. we definitely don't have to wait for people to die or accidents to happen before they fix the problem. *tr

I have a 2007 toyota camry hybrid that started showing "check vsc system" on the multifunction display in early october of 2013. by the end of that moth it became a permanent item on the display. the computer indicates a c1391 error. after testing the actuator assembly was deemed defective. i have discontinued driving this vehicle after an incident in rainy weather while the "check vsc system" was displayed on the multifunction display. i was on the interstate traveling approximately 60 mph in light rain. traffic started slowing ahead so i tried to apply the brakes, but they did not respond immediately. after an approximately 2 second delay they did respond, but it was abruptly and caused the car to start skidding. without immediate and substantial driver input the vehicle would have been in an out-of-control situation. the car has remained parked since that incident for fear it is too dangerous to drive without functioning brakes. the operation of the brakes on this vehicle in an abs failure mode is dangerous and potentially deadly. i have driven plenty of vehicles that were not equipped with abs, and none of those vehicle ever exhibited the dangerous behaviors this vehicle exhibits with a failed component. since the brakes on a vehicle are relied upon in emergency situations all components in that system should be designed to fail in a safe manner leaving a vehicle that is still safe to drive. further toyota is aware that select years of this vehicle have a manufacturing defect or faulty design since the actuator was redesigned a couple years after this vehicle was first introduced into the market. i ask that the nhtsa investigate the safety of this vehicle model and year to determine the safety of these vehicles during an abs/vsc component failure. *tr

I was turning into my office parking lot when my "check vsc system", brake light, stability control light, etc came on. immediately, my brakes were practically gone and fortunately nobody was coming the other direction or i wouldn't have been able to stop. over the next few months, this same thing happened every few days, mostly when driving around 50mph but it would go away and be back to normal, usually within a few minutes. eventually, the lights came on and this time stayed on (they've been on for a few weeks now), but the brakes seem to be working fine. however, i'm scared that they will give out. i've done some research on this and i believe there is already an investigation underway. i just wanted to add my name/complaint to the list. this is absolutely a safety hazard that will result in deaths if not recalled. i've read that some people who have had this fixed at the dealership or a repair shop are paying around $3000 dollars to have it fixed. i don't have $3000 dollars to spend on something that toyota should take care of themselves because of a flaw in their car's design. i don't have the money to spend, but i also don't want to die! please do something about this. *tr

At a parking spot, full stop, suddenly the vehicle surged and hit a cement post. air bags did not deploy. damage to vehicle was over $7500 left knee/shin hit dash due to knee air bag not deploying. injury was not reported as it did not show up until later. *tr

I was only driving my vehicle about a mile when it first happened. i was approaching a stop light and attempted to apply the brakes. nothing happened. the steering went out and the brakes felt like they weren't catching. thankfully, i was only going about 25-30 mph, and had enough space to stop before hitting another car that was stopped at the light. i looked at the dashboard display and noticed something that read, "check vsc system". there was also a warning triangle. the camry manual instructed us to bring it to the dealership - but i can't afford that. the next day, it worked fine. a few weeks later, the incident happened again while i was exiting the highway and coming to a red light. i was decelerating from about 65 mph to a full stop and felt the brakes give again and the steering was difficult. i was able to pull over, turn off the car, and restart and it was fine again. i had the brake pads changed, but don't understand what is happening. we didn't have the problem for several months. but now it feels like the brakes want to give when i am idling in traffic. while my foot is on the brake, the car will squeak and subtly jerk forward like the brakes are about to give up the ghost. it's really scary, but i can't afford another car at this time. i've looked into the vsc system and don't understand why that would intermittently affect my braking and steering ability. *tr
