There is significant and substantial rust on the frame of this vehicle. there is more than one hole eaten completely through the frame, along with terrible surface rust that has eaten the frame so thin that any light tap creates a hole completely through. this has also rusted through the fuel tank straps, and other various suspension points. the service technician at toyota told me the vehicle is not recommended to stay on the road, and did not want to service the timing belt due to fear that other components would easily snap off because of the amount of rust all over the entire frame. this vehicle is very similar to my 2010 toyota tacoma, and shares several related parts and pieces. i am fully aware of the recall for frame rust on the tacomas, and fortunately my truck was not damaged. this vehicle is too much like the tacoma to not have the same consideration of having the same issues. no vehicle, much less a vehicle only 14 years old should have this bad of an issue, and it is a widely known problem in the toyota enthusiasts community. this is a newer vehicle for my wife, and now i am being told that it is too dangerous to drive! from the outside of the vehicle, you would never know there was any issues at all. but after seeing the rust and holes, the rusted through fuel tank straps, i am shocked, dismayed, and absolutely scared to let my wife continue to drive it. please take the time to review these cases, and see how they relate as exactly the same situation as the tacoma and tundra frames. i have owned numerous toyota vehicles through my lifetime, and toyotas have always been my favorite and absolutely amazing vehicles for me. this is definitely out of the normal spectrum that i consider when i think of, and brag about the reliability and all around enjoyment i have in and with my toyota and lexus vehicles. thank you for your time and help in this matter.
I bought my 4runner new and have taken meticulous care of it via the dealership i bought it from, doing an oil change every 5000 miles. now they tell me the truck should not be driven since the frame has rusted through in the rear. the trucks maintenance was done at prestige toyota mahesh nj 201-669-4525 service manager is robert j teunisen
Frame is rusted excessively. garage kept every winter. my rear driver side sway bar has completely rusted off the frame.
I purchased this vehicle used from a dealer in 2014 with low miles on it and it appeared to be in great shape. the undercarriage was sprayed with what i thought was a coating to protect against rust. i realize now the dealer was probably trying to hide the rust problems. the coating flaked off a short time later and ever since, i too have been plagued by the frame and other component rust problems. had to replace the exhaust, running boards, sway bar and several other things that all rusted off on the undercarriage. my skid plates are about to fall off next. just had my brakes replaced and the shop noticed a couple areas where frame now has holes through it and says it likely won't pass state inspection which will be coming due soon. the rust problems with these 4runners seems like a big problem that toyota should address. i'm going to have to put a bunch more money into fixing this vehicle or be left with a worthless piece of junk i can't drive and will be taking a big loss on.
I was driving down the highway using my rear defroster when my back window shattered without cause, it sounded like a gunshot. the shock caused me and the driver behind me to both swerve almost causing two wrecks.
I was driving home on a suburban road going about 25 mph and took a corner which felt like i had hit snow or ice, however conditions were optimal. the fishtailing continued and i parked my car as it did not feel safe to drive. when the mechanic looked at it he said i could have been in a serious accident and possibly a roll had i taken it on the highway. the frame was cracked. we also had already replaced the suspension on this vehicle, and the exhaust fell off on the highway the year prior due to rust. the underbody of the car is excessively rusted.
The mechanic replaced the rusted exhaust system today and advised me to get rid of this vehicle as soon as possible as it would not be safe to operate in less than a year due heavy and unusual flaking rust on the frame and other undercarriage parts.
The frame is rusted bad in front of left rear wheel while the rest of vehicle looks new.
I noticed that the frame of my 06 4runner has begun to corrode severely. there are holes in the frame that pose a severe safety threat and i'm concerned that the whole frame could give out at any time. toyota recalled tacoma's from the same timespan due to frame issues yet the 4runners were left off... the truck is in pristine condition besides the undercarriage of the vehicle. toyota should be held liable and recall them before lives are lost. the suspension definitely doesn't feel right and when bumps or potholes in the road are hit the vehicle feels as if it's being jerked from side to side. please continue your investigation on the frames of the 4runners and get toyota to recall them.
Purchased my 4runner certified used by modern toyota of boone in feb 2012. took the vehicle to toyota the next year locally and they mentioned that i have severe frame rust but by this time the warranty has already expired. filed a complaint with toyota regarding frame rust and the fact that i was sold the vehicle and it should not have been certified by toyota because of the frame rust. had an accident in jun 2018, high front end hit, shouldn't have had any issues with the frame and it wasn't checked for integrity, but after some vibrations and wobbling and decreased stability on the highway, took to my local dealer and the tech did a visual inspection and said the frame was bent. awaiting an appt from bodyshop to verify findings even though insurance already closed the claim from accident but independent mechanic states that the frame may really be bent due to the rusting and the ability to flex because of the corrosion, weakened. vehicle feels unsafe to drive and is leaning on the drivers side front and back even with new factory toyota suspension (struts and shocks). there is no reason for this vehicle to be leaning or the frame to be rusting as it is.
I turned on the rear defrost in the highway. after about 10 minutes, i started to smell a slight burning smell. backglass was exploded with my 3 years kid. i called toyota dealership they said the warranty is expired.
Took my 4runner in to get a new muffler since it started to rust off and was told that the frame is rusting out and has a few small rust holes that car will not be good for much longer.
Frame totally rusted through, dealer would not pass inspection and advised to scrap vehicle! less than 50,000 miles on the odometer.
My 4-runner is in great shape without any body rust, nice interior , motor doesn't use oil etc. i took to mechanic for pa annual inspection and was told it wasn't safe to drive home. the frame is completely rotted out , the rear stabilizers are unattached, the from left wheel is ready to fall off. the hitch on the back for pulling trailers is ready to fall off. i noticed in the past week the steering wheel pulled to the right( never done that before ) and steering wheel would shimmy starting at 50 m.p.h. and braking.
Excessive rust damage to frame, got fixed for last year inspection and more problems occured this year. vehicle other wise in good shape, disappointing to get rid of it. could case hazard due to weld of cross member developing hole.
The frame and suspension components are extremely rusty to the point of being unsafe. the car is extremely clean and well taken care of, yet the frame continues to rust like crazy. i've experienced broken bolts, lose suspension components, etc. the car handles extremely poor now, and i've been told it isn't worth it to replace any suspension components since the mounting points are so rusty.
Frame rust recall- the vehicles frame has major rust and cracks. vehicle will not pass state inspection due to the the amount of rust that has accumulated.
The frame of my 4runner is excessively rusted and corroded. it is flaking off in big pieces from the outside of the frame as well as the inside of the frame. in a couple of locations, it has corroded so much that there is a 1.5" diameter hole in the frame. other areas that are very important structurally and for suspension, has severe rust and i'm worried that those areas will crack and cause me to lose control while driving.
Frame is very rotted
The vehicle was traveling on in town highway speeds between 25-55 miles per hour for approximately 10 miles while towing a 14 foot trailer. as i approached an interstate on ramp in winchester, kentucky, i smelled smoke and pulled over to inspect the vehicle. the source of the smoke/flame was coming from the rear muffler pipe fiberglass heat insulator (toyota part number 58155-60100). the fiberglass heat insulator had dry rotted and was resting on the rear muffler pipe as it bends over the rear axle. i was able to crawl under the truck and pull the insulator off the bottom of the truck and extinguish on the side of the road. after discussing with toyota dealer, no product recall has been issued but the part has now been remanufacturered out of tin/aluminum to reduce this risk. due to the high risk for fire / injury that is very near the gas tank, should this be issued as a manufacturer recall?
Turning out of a parking lot and had rear defroster on. within a few minutes smelled a "burning smell" and seconds later my back glass shattered.
Turning out of parking lot. rear defrost was on. started smelling a "burning smell" and seconds later my rear glass shattered.
Vehicle frame is rusting faster than normal. have had to replace many suspension parts, welded front alignment tabs to keep vehicle in line, replaced vehicle suspension but unsure how long this will last due to frame still flaking. toyota dealer states that the rust is severe and when i had my rear upper control arms replaced, stated that the mount bracket was very thin and causing movement in the rear of my vehicle.
My 2006 toyota 4runner limited has excessive rust corrosion throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle including but not limited to the frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and bolts/bracing. since purchasing the vehicle, i have had to replace both front axles due to excessive rust at the recommendation of both the dealership and a third party mechanic. while driving, the skid plate detached from underneath the vehicle and was dragging beneath the car after the metal on the plate rusted out around the bolts. similarly, the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. when i replaced the front brakes (pads & discs), i was forced to purchase brand new calipers because the current calipers were so rusted and seized and the mechanic could not reattach them. i have continued to use toyota dealerships for scheduled maintenance and the consensus has been as follows: sell the 4runner because it is excessively rusted would be a money pit to repair. currently, the dealership has recommended i replace the steering rack and pinion due to leaks caused by rust. moreover, the vehicle has duel exhaust leaks in both exhaust manifolds due to excessive rust. on multiple occasions the dealership told me they could not perform the work because of excessive rust. it has cost me thousands to repair and maintain, all of which is a result of extensive rust. the suspension and frame, including the shocks, struts, and bolts are excessively rusted and i have been urged to repair or sell the vehicle by multiple mechanics and dealerships, though the cost to do so would far exceed the cost of the vehicle. all of the aforementioned is detailed in paperwork from the dealership and supplemented by paperwork from third party mechanics here in san diego. the vehicle has 90k miles on it and has followed scheduled maintenance meticulously.
We have just been informed that the frame of our 2006 toyota 4runner is completely rusted out. this happened while i was driving down the road. this caused the control joint to come loose, and giving me very little control over the vehicle. the rust is an issues...and a huge safety hazard. i was able to get the car to the side of the road, and call a tow truck, but had this happened driving down the express way i cannot imagine the end result. toyota is aware of the rust issues. they have great vehicles that will run forever if you take care of them, but this issue is not a care issue - is a manufacture issue.
I am asking for you to cancel the sale of the 2006 toyota 4 runner that i purchased on 3/22/2017 and return my cash deposit of $2,000 and reimburse me for the gas it took me to drive it home and the extra key i purchased. i am actually afraid to take it back to your dealership, but if i have to i will. the facts are below purchased car in boulder 3/22/2017 2006 toyota 4 runner rust damage / dealer stated rust was because car was from ny, but would not get worse and was just superficial rust. purchased car and set an appt. with pueblo toyota 3/24/2017 to mount spare tire and do and inspection toyota could not mount spare tire and stated vehicle was in good condition except for severe rust damage and may cost double to do repairs in the future because of rust damage. took car to pro-masters on 3/24/2017 and they informed my son that the rust was severe and they would not attempt to repair, but estimated costs to repair the rear end to be $6,000 to $7,000 reviewed on internet and there were several complaints about rust damage on 4-runners, tundras, and tacoma?s from n.e. states. comments were also made that the vehicle with severe rust damage could be unsafe to drive. took car to individual who restores cars and he said the rust was so severe and car was not worth repairing and unsafe and he would not let his wife or family drive it. took car to custom care repair shop to review rust and install spare tire and they concurred that the rust was severe and unsafe and could not install spare tire. i called pro-masters to confirm what they had inspected and if i could give his name and phone number if asked. he informed me that rust was so severe that if he attempted to secure spare tire, that the frame holding it was so thin he could not guarantee it would not fall off & he informed me that as the vehicle gets wet the frame becomes worse
Driving to work on 3-6-17. it was 34 f at 8:15 am. turned on the rear window defroster about one mile from home. drove another 0.5 miles and stopped at red light. about 15 seconds into the red light my rear window imploded and fell into the rear cargo area. vehicle was stationary and no other vehicle struck me. drove back home and cleaned up the glass and saw no evidence of a rock or pellet or bullet with the glass or in the vehicle. online discussions indicate the rear defroster may have overheated and shattered glass. i have 3 photos on file in computer, but not in correct format. tried to upload, but was not able to do so.
Frame rot excessive rust on frame, compromising the integrity and putting the passengers lives at risk if the frame should fail. contacted toyota, they informed me that no recalls or service campaigns are available for frame rot on 4runners, however tacomas, sequoias, and tundras have had frame rot recalls. very unhappy as to how this matter is being treated especially after all the other frame issues from toyota vehicles.
Purchased a tcuv in 2012 and live in eastern nc. took vehicle in for diagnostic and was told that frame was severely rusted. was not made aware when purchased. called toyota and awaiting a call but rep says that its out of warranty and will not assist. vehicle can't go from fine to severe in 3 years and was certified by toyota to be fine or "like new". something has to be done and a recall has to be issued. this is an ongoing issues that many individuals are experiencing and a severe safety hazard should something go wrong on the freeway. no one should have to die before something gets done and it would be in poor taste for this to happen before this complaint moves from its current status to investigation by our government to protect us from companies like this.
I am the original owner of this vehicle and have kept this vehicle in excellent condition. i have spent lots of money on routine maintenance of this vehicle as well as more involved tune-ups. i have also washed this vehicle regularly including the underside of this vehicle, especially during the winter months to clean off road salt. there are no existing mechanical or other problems with this vehicle and can potentially drive this vehicle for many more years to come. however, during a routine visit to my local toyota service center, i was told that there exists a large perforation on the frame of this vehicle due to rust. i was further told that this frame perforation makes this vehicle unsafe to drive and was instructed not to use this vehicle since it could result in a deadly situation for the occupants of this vehicle if the frame broke (which i was told will happen) while driving. i am now unable to use this vehicle due to safety concerns. i called toyota hq to complain, but they told me that they cannot help me and that my vehicle is out of warranty.
While driving last evening, my rear window exploded.
The frame rust on my 2006 4runner is becoming extensive and the amount for the year that can become potentially dangerous in the near future is inexcusable quality at best. there are areas on the frame that i am able to push in with my fingers because of the rust. there are also other parts where other parts that have been bolted on to the frame or welded on have completely rusted off. i am able to in spots peel the frame apart piece by piece like an onion only exposing the ridiculously thin amount that is left. i have a 2003 chevy pickup that drives in same conditions as the 4runner and looks years newer underneath than the 4runner that is actually the newer of the two. i would like to make it known that frame rust from other research regarding these vehicles as well as my own is something worthy of a toyota recal or buy back program such as what was done with other generation tacomas.
Severe frame rust.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. the contact stated that there was an extensive leak of an unknown fluid under the front of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the hydraulic system needed to be replaced. also, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the suspension system needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 109,000.
I was coming into dewitt arkansas on highway165 on 12/13/09 at about 12:30pm with my cruise control on at about 60 mph. i tapped the brake to disengage the cruise control and slowed down to make a right hand turn into an exxon mini mart. my 2006 toyota 4runner suddenly accelerated as i attempted to stop near the front door. as i applied pressure to the brakes i heard the anti lock brakes clicking and suddenly the 4runner lunged forward striking a large pole that was in front of me. the rear wheels were spinning wildly and the back end was bouncing up and down. the 4runner was bouncing to the side and i slammed the shift lever into park. the power to the back wheels stopped. i sat back and took my foot off the brake pedal, then i noticed that the engine was still running wide open throttle. i reached up and turned the key off. i looked at the floor mat and it was in its normal location with no contact with the gas pedal. the two hooks were attached holding the floor mat in place. there was no way it could have been involved. two employees came out and asked if i was okay. i told them i was okay, but scared to death. i told them i had heard about toyotas having a sudden acceleration problem, but i never thought i would be involved in one. i had to walk around a while to calm down. i got the employees names and phone numbers in case i needed them. i went back outside and started the 4runner up again and it ran normal. i drove it to my dad's and left it there. i called the toyota dealer the next day and had them come pick it up. the dealer had a local technician check it out. they said they could find nothing wrong and said i should come and get it. i told them that was unacceptable. they had a regional specialized field technician evaluate it. he said that there was no safety hazard with my 4runner. the dealer wants me to come and get the vehicle. nothing has been fixed or repaired.*tr
I had a 2006 toyota 4 runner, limited. the brake system never was right and that is why we got rid of the car. at a light, car would continue to inch forward. i complained to the dealer several times and when it lurched forward when stopped in a school zone this past spring, we immediately got rid of it, since the dealer kept telling me nothing was wrong. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on normal road conditions, the surf board strapped to the luggage rack flew off. the contact noticed the rear cross bar detached from the rack side rails. no warning signals were observed. the dealership and the manufacturer did not accept responsibility because the front cross bar moved towards the rear hitting the rear cross bar forcing its detachment. the cross bars were adjusted to the side bars by thumb screws. the contact expressed concern because the board could hit another vehicle with fatal consequences. the contact was also convinced the thumb screws were not safe to strap any load on the luggage rack.
Not until i read the article on yahoo (inside washington missed signs in toyotas recalls) did i realize i do have a problem with my 2006 toyota 4runner. my 4runner constantly lurches foward as i have my foot on the brake in a stopped postion. i always thought it was just the way the truck was made since it was my first toyota. now i realize what the problem is. but how do i get it fixed? i do not see the 4runners as having the recall on them. *cn
