Problems with 2018 Subaru Outback VISIBILITY/WIPER

On average, the 2018 Subaru Outback starts to “feel” problems with the VISIBILITY/WIPER and its various aspects after 18 067 miles.

Recently reported VISIBILITY/WIPER problems on 2018 Subaru Outback

I was driving on a 2 lane hwy going about 50mph when i spotted a small star crack in the bottom, middle of my windshield. the crack has continued to grow, mostly horizontal over the next 2 weeks. the weather was mild, about 55 degrees and there was no one driving in front of me.

On returning to parked car mid-day on 2/2/2020 (a mild winter day, parked in shade at ski resort), i saw a t shaped crack on lower part of windshield just on passenger side of center. there was no chip or dent or crack in the central windshield when i parked the car. i didn't see or hear an impact to the windshield on the drive that morning. over the course of the next 10 days, this has grown, extending to the bottom of the windshield and across about half the width of the windshield.

Windshield spontaneously cracked overnight while parked in a garage. 12" crack appeared on driver's side. this is the second windshield that has cracked within 2 years and less than 27k miles.

Windshield cracks easily and quickly. affects safety/camera and sensors. a small chip appeared on the windshield, under cold temperatures in kansas 2020 january, chip grew a crack extending from driver to passenger side

Like other late model subaru outback owners, a spontaneous crack developed in the windshield. this crack appeared at approximately noon on saturday, december 29th, 2019 in the parking lot of a restaurant. i have an appointment to assess the problem tomorrow at the subaru dealer from whom i purchased the vehicle. the initial indication is that the crack may not be covered by the warranty. i am filing this complaint to document the issue and perhaps to recover the cost of this repair ,if incurred, from subaru.

A small rock or piece of gravel hit the driver's side windshield approximately 3" from the top edge while driving on the freeway. almost immediately a 12" long crack developed and has continued to spread. this is the second time this has happened in 16 months.

Small rock (maybe?) hit windshield and it immediately cracked. was driving back from memphis, tn to little rock, ar christmas evening on i-40. this is now the second time this has happened in 1.5 years of owning this vehicle.

My front windshield developed a spontaneous crack below the wiper blade. it was stationery.

Cracked windshield spontaneously occurred while vehicle was parked in driveway. crack spread throughout the lower portion of the windshield.

Small rock hit windshield and it caused a huge crack in march 2019 and then again in november 2019. we were driving down the highway when it happened. it should have cause no damage or just a little chip, not huge cracks. the windshield appears to be weak.

I bought my car brand new in march of 2018. after only 1 year the windshield cracked. i did not see where the initial chip was and came out to my car one morning and saw the windshield completely cracked. i was shocked at how expensive the recalibration was so i filed an insurance claim. i still had to pay around $300 to get it fixed because again, recalibration costs an exorbitant amount for some reason. after further review i got off light as having it done by the dealership was quoted to me as costing $850. it is now only 7 months later and my windshield is cracked all the way across again. i didn't see the chip at first until it had begun to crack a tiny amount. as i was driving in the city it spread all the way across the windshield. because i saw it early i planned to get it fixed the next day to hopefully avoid another few hundred dollars of expense. unfortunately, it spread all the way across the windshield making it irreparable within 30 minutes of my finding it. again, this was with me driving less than 30 mph with no heat on because it's cold outside and i know hot and cold make it worse. i have never had a windshield crack like this and more than once within a 1 year time frame. these windshields seem to be made very cheaply at the expense of safety. i can't afford to make another insurance claim or pay this out of pocket. i took every precaution as a driver and this still happened. i will never buy another subaru and may sell this one if this keeps happening because i simply cannot afford to fix this all of the time and more importantly i shouldn't have to.

I have replaced the windshield 3 times already. tiny rocks are causing large cracks like i've never experienced before in other vehicles. this should not be happening.

I heard the noise of a pebble hitting the windshield on the highway traveling between 60 and 70 mph. less than a minute later, a crack appeared vertically from the bottom center of the windshield. later, the crack became a "t" and grew horizontally. the next day when the windshield defroster was on, the crack continued to grow to about a foot and a half. the windshield had to be replaced at this point.

My windshield has cracked twice since last year when i bought it new.

Front windshield cracked by itself while being stationary in a near-empty parking lot (only two cars in the parking lot including mine). happened on oct 10, 2019 between 10-11:30am. parked the car in the lot and went inside building for 90 minutes. when i came out i noticed a large crack in the front windshield originating at the deicer area in front of the passenger side. the crack pattern seems similar to the 2015/2016 outback/legacy cracked windshield issue (subaru bulletin #12-192-15r). other subaru outback owners have reported similar issues for recent outback year models based on google search of subaru forums. told subaru dealer about the issue and they said it was not covered under warranty. they asked me to replace windshield using auto-insurance glass coverage. i have replaced the windshield using my insurance and also paid (via insurance claim) for eyesight calibration as required by subaru.

We have 2 cracks that continue to grow on our windshield. we have never had a windshield crack in this way in over 50 years of driving. the cracks grow overnight in the garage!!

The windshield cracked, starting at the bottom middle, and spreading up and then in all directions. there is no point of impact and the crack started while parked int the driveway, away from the front of the house.

Windshield spontaneously cracked. was not hot by any object. subaru outback 2018. crack initiated below drivers side windshield wiper.

Crack developed on windshield suddenly and without impact of anything.

The windshield on my subaru outback limited 2018 that i just bought on june 15, 2018 suddenly cracked while driving home on interstate 80 from omaha, ne to atlantic, ia with my mom on november 10, 2018. the crack started on the bottom half of the passenger's side and continued straight upward until it reached about half the length of the windshield. i contacted subaru and it said the windshield was not covered in the policy so i had to pay for it myself or have my car insurance pay. i ended up getting the windshield replaced by deter motors in atlantic ia on november 23, 2018. then on august 25, 2019 while driving to des moines, ia on interstate 80 with my then fiancee, mom, and sister, the windshield suddenly cracked again for no apparent reason. this crack started at the bottom of the windshield on the bottom and continued upward about 7 inches at first. the crack has since grown in size and length. i contacted subaru again and was giving the same answer in that they don't cover windshields. i have yet to be fixed as i was quite frustrated with two cracked windshields in less than one year. i started to look online to see if other subaru owners were having similar issues and found that yes, many are also experiencing cracked windshields for no apparent and/or obvious reasons. i do want to get the windshield replaced but am worried that it'll just crack again. i do have record of the first windshield replacement from deter motors. i also have pictures of the 2nd crack and will be more than happy to provide them.

While driving on the highway 8/10/19 a very small stone hit the windshield in the lower left corner. within 10 minutes a large crack had formed from the extreme left edge to the middle of the driver vision section of the windshield. by the next morning the crack had extended to the middle of the windshield. there was a very small chipped area where the stone hit, barely visible. i even had zurichshield glass protection applied to protect the windshield, which was useless. about 21,200 miles on the car. i previously had a honda pilot that would have pits, even a crater from stones, but never a crack. i've owned many cars and have never had a crack until now. very disappointed a small pellet hitting the windshield resulted in a crack that was so big that i had to entirely replace the windshield. my car is only 1 year old, and a small stone cost me over $500, plus the cost of a protectant program that failed as well. dealer (williams subaru) said it was an auto insurance issue, not covered under warranty, or under the zurichshield (fixes up to 6 inch crack- mine never quit growing), they wouldn't do anything. i'm checking into getting a refund on the zurichshield policy...

In a period of less than 1 year, i have experienced three windshields cracking from normal driving down the highway. i have driven for over 55 years in several vehicles and have been hit by road debris or rocks numerous times. this will normally leave a pit or star which can be repaired, i never have had a vehicle's windshield crack, all the way across when simply driving the speed limit. not once, but three times in a 5 month period. i feel these windshields are not safe for my family to be in. if they crack with a pebble, what would happen if there was an accident. the first windshield cracked coming back from the grand canyon visit. the second time, new replacement window from suburu, cracked from little or unknown strike 2 months later. suburu replaced that window at their cost. 2 months later during july heat, a small rock picked off the road and the window cracked in a backward c shape. suburu denies any liability from road hazards, and will not consider they have less quality product as it was approved. reading several blogs and online comments alerted me that this was very common and they had past issues with their windshields. who can i speak to?

Windscreen is easily cracked by any pebbles that knick thr shield. first time the screen was hit by a pebble from a moving vehicle and the crack spread all the way across the screen. had to replace it with another subaru glass. not even 2 weeks in another pebble hits and chips..then a couple weeks later again, another pebble cracks the screen. anything that hits the glass seems to put knicks and cracks. other cars we've owned have been hit harder and not had any damage. not sure what these subaru glass screens are made of, but i assume the most delicate of materials not suited for windshield use. all times hit with rocks from moving vehicles while my car was also in motion on a highway.

Windshield developed a crack driver side bottom corner, with no chip or reason for the crack

A large crack, like the shape of a question mark, spontaneously appeared in my windshield. the crack starts below the windshield wiper, up about 7 inches and curves back down. car was moved out of our garage and parked in driveway when the crack appeared!!!!!

I purchased the vehicle on 6/21/19. on 7/1/19 a small starburst crack appeared on passenger side of windshield. i first noticed this while drive on highway. within 2 days, the crack had spread across 3/4 of the entire windshield. (there was no apparent impact from any object). the windshield was totally replaced and recalibrated on 7/15/19. on 8/30/19 the same thing occurred. a small starburst appeared on the drivers side of windshield , which soon spread across the drivers view. i noticed the crack when the car was stationary in the garage. i am awaiting service from safelite now. subaru says it is not responsible. however, there are multiple complaints regarding this exact issue...windshield cracks without any object impacting it! i cannot be replacing my windshield every couple of weeks.

Windshield spontaneously developed a crack while parked in a closed, private garage.

Windshield just cracks driving 64mph for no apparent reason. just spider cracked.

Windshield has cracked and required replacement 3 times in the last 1.5 years. i replaced the windshield a week ago and now have another crack!! these cracks were obtained while driving on the interstate. 2 were due to rocks. the others are unknown. i owned my ford escape for 10 years and had the windshield replaced maybe 2 times.

Car parked in driveway in morning and windshield was fine. few hours later there was a two foot crack from the drivers side to the mid point of the windshield.

I received a single minute hit from an 18-wheeler while driving on a freeway and now that grown within a month to covering the whole windshield like an art drawing my fear is driver assist camera may be affected putting others and me in accident danger

My windshield cracked for seemingly no reason, while driving on clean and clear highway. i didn't notice anything hit the windshield, but a huge crack appeared. i'm reporting this because i've read that this is a common occurrence on 2017 - 2019 subaru outbacks, and i wanted you to be aware of mine.

Filed complaint with wrong year complaint #11210766 correct year is 2018 camera display do es not always display the rear view image while backing up. first time it happened was 5/25/2019.

I was traveling at about 35 mph with traffic when a rock hit my windshield and created two chips. these are the second and third chips in this window since i bought the vehicle in april 2019.

Can not see back up camera screen in daytime with bright sunlight shining through windshield

Windshield cracked while in motion, affected visibility so i had it replaced.

Windshield cracked and needed to be replaced 2 times in first 20 months we owned it. windshield needed to be replaced, and driver-assist (eyesight) system recalibrated to operate safely. happened in january 2018, and may 2019

A rock hit my windshield and produced a significant divot and crack while the driver ahead of me and i were turning from a stop in the left turn lane.

I have had 2 rock chip repairs and i windshield replacement within a span of 6 months. all these cracks were right on the line of sight. since i am driving on a highway i cannot stop the vehicle immediately. it is really risky to drive with such a delicate winshield. what happens if the crack is large enough to cause life damage ? the cost of a windshield replacement along with recalibration in 700$. if i keep doing this every 2 months, it will surpass the amount i used to purchase the car?. it has been widely spoken that outback has a windshield defect. though they had some recalls in 2015, even the newer versions like mine 2018, has the same problem. it seems that the outbacks winshield cannot withstand even small stones. you can literally hear the impact of even a raindrop falling on the glass while driving. i have gone to the point of making sure that my windesielf is not cracked when it rains with hail at times. doing so make me stressful about my safety as well as financial burden while driving the car. it cannot be considered as external impact because there were other cars driving along side the highway and were exposed to the same rock chips from a truck, only my outbacks winshield cracked. 2 of the cracks was while driving on the highway whereas the other one was while driving near my home (a very very rare scenario). i hope this issue is notices as there are a lot of complaints on this and suburu has so far ignored all these complaints and the taxpayer ends up paying the cost of the vehicle for its repairs due to a defect from subaru's end

Driving on highway one day heard a crack. parked the car and after a few hours noticed a small hairline crack. that started from the middle passenger side. there was no sign of of rock hitting the windshield.

The head unit went black and that means i do not have a back up camera. i live in a place where back up camera is a must. i purchased this unit because it have a big back up camera and all 2018 models must have back up camera. subaru failed to comply with the safety compliance.

Second cracked windshield in one week. first one was replaced 2/8/18. both times traveled at low to moderate speed 25-40 mph on local fwy in los angeles, ca. sunny mild, dry conditions, no wind. small pebble hit windshield. couldn't see hit, only heard a small crack sound. damaged windshield, first time small pebble mark grew to long crack. initial impact size about 1.5 - 2 mm. one week later another pebble hit windshield in slow traffic,35 mph, no trucks near by. same size of mark. subaru requires their windshield repair at customer cost of $930. warranty does not cover any debris damage, but small pebbles should not cause this kind of damage and costs. had a grand cherokee 184k miles and never a crack or ding, never issue for our 2005 saab, or any orevious vehicle. should not cost us $1860 month additional to maintain car, plus safety issue. according to subaru corporate: does not recommend us to drive it with i-site camera with a damaged windshield. they say that the glass is thinner/lighter in order to work with camera and be more fuel efficient/lighter. cars should be able to withstand normal driving and road conditions.

In less than a year on 2 occasions a small rock caused significant damage to the windshield causing the windshield to be replaced.

I was driving and hit a pothole with the right front tire. i heard a loud pop or crack and thought something had happened to the tire or wheel because it was a very loud. but after continuing to drive slowly for another block, it was apparent the tire wasn't damaged nor did the car systems indicate any problems. i was driving on a city street at approximately 35mph when i hit the pothole. i continued driving and completed my errands. i did look at the tire when i parked for my errand but didn't see any visible damage to the tire, wheel or body. i then drove home and parked the car in our garage as usual. i did not have any other issues, problems or hear any noises. the damage to the windshield was readily visible the next morning when i came out to drive the car. the crack in the windshield had started under the seal on the passenger side and had traveled up approximately 8-12 inches. it has continued to grow and is now almost bottom to top on the passenger side at the time our car had just passed the 12 month warranty period. however, i discussed the issue with the dealer where we leased the car when doing routine maintenance. this discussion took place over several months as i tried to work with them about the windshield potentially being defective since it was just the action of driving through the pothole that caused the windshield to crack. they agreed to look into the issue but ultimately denied the possibility of a defective windshield. the time between the event and now was due to ongoing discussions with the dealer. the windshield is still not fixed but i was just getting ready to have it repaired after this last round of discussions with the dealer.

I got into my car, it parked, closed the door, heard something fall and when i checked to see what the noise was my entire rear window on the hatch was shattered. i called the dealership and they said they don't cover it under warranty and that i would need to fix it on my own, they also said any of the warranties i purchased also dont cover it. they also mentioned that 4 people also called this same week with this issue. i had a hatch back car for 15+ yrs before purchasing this subaru and this never happened. judy didnt seem right.

A tiny pebble struck the windshield on the interstate, but it suddenly grew to a crack approximately 6 inches long. never had this problem before, and my car is fairly new on the road (less than 8,000 miles, bought in july, 2018). deeply concerned that subaru still has not figured out its notorious windshield-reliability problem that has frustrated so many drivers throughout the past 5 years.

Around january this year my windshield cracked as soon as i got out from the garage(64 dregrees) to the driveway(39 degrees). i went to the local dealer and the service advisor run a ball around the glass crack and suddenly stopped and forcefully pushed against the pen against the glass and said that was an impact. i looked at the area of the glass impact but all i saw was the dent that the pen left. the dealer refused to replace the glass due to an impact and referred to my auto insurance. i put a claim and paid my $500 deductible to replace the windshield. in retrospective i knew it was no impact and when i took the car to the dealer they did not have the intention on helping me.

Wtz85 - subaru of america, inc. (subaru) is recalling 2018 model year legacy, outback, and brz vehicles equipped with a certain combination of head unit hardware and software, due to the possibility of noncompliance with federal motor vehicle safety standard type: recall | service campaign: wtz85 | nhtsa campaign: 18v-000000 open recall date: january 02, 2019 description 18 leg/out/brz v3 head unit reprogram safety risk due to a software issue, the head unit memory retrieval and assembly time may exceed the designed time to begin the boot-up cycle. if this occurs, the head unit display will not boot, causing the screen to remain blank. in this condition, while backing the vehicle, the rearview image may not be displayed. the failure to display the rearview image creates a non-compliance with the requirements of fmvss 111 ' 'rear visibility,' increasing the risk of a crash. there are 1000's of these on backorder causing us to drive around in unsafe vehicles because they do not know when replacment units will be available and they are not providing a loaner car in the meantime. this is unacceptable for a company that prides themselves on their safety!!!!!

I found a crack in the upper right hand corner of my windshield (subaru outback 2018). the vehicle was stationary at the time. there was no cause for the crack (hail storm, rock/gravel hitting car). at this time, the crack has spread and the subaru eyesight program (sensor program) does not work.

2 windshield cracks in lower portion of windshield during 1st year of ownership. both cracks occurred while driving around town ~35 mph, once during a 100 degf summer day, and the other during a 40 degf rainy winter morning. inspection of crack after stopping showed possible origination from ~1mm chips. during the summer, the first chip, located in the de-icer area, grew rapidly to a crack across the windshield with a loud 'pop' sound after the air conditioner was turned on high using defroster air mode. subaru of america (not the dealer) replaced the windshield and recalibrated the eyesight system as a 'goodwill' repair. during the winter, another chip between the vin# display window and the perimeter of the lower windshield explosively grew to a crack when heated defroster air was activated. repair pending. main concern is the fragile nature and temperature dependance of this glass temper, especially near window boundary conditions and where defroster air is the strongest. over 20 years of driving other vehicles on the same route have caused little chips on other windshields, but never has a chip grown into a crack, with or without hot or cold defroster air hitting it. i suspect that the thickness and temper of the latest generation of outback carlex windshields will continue to cause issues similar to tsb# 12-192-15r.
