Problems with 2016 Subaru Forester AIR BAGS

On average, the 2016 Subaru Forester starts to “feel” problems with the AIR BAGS and its various aspects after 45 338 miles.

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2016 Subaru Forester

When driving with no one in the passenger seat and sometimes when there is someone in the seat i get an srs airbag fault but it never stays on after i shut down the suv. sometimes when i restart the suv after about 5 minutes it will come back on and it stays on until i shut off the suv. then nothing for weeks. i've wanted to take it to the dealer but every time i start to head over to then the fault goes out or never comes on? i'm sure if i just head over i'm just wasting my time. the last two months it's been much more active with the fault happening. i'm listing the last time it has happen as 01/10/2020. i keep nothing on the passengers seat and i am unsure if the air bag light (yellow light on the dash) shows that it is on or off when it comes on. my wife was driving about a week ago and i was in the passenger seat (6' 225 lbs) and the srs fault come on and the yellow airbag light showed it was still on. i have a trip to pittsburgh pa from allentown pa and i'm worried that if i'm in an accident they won't go off and protect us. this car is just out of warranted and i have about 44k on the vehicle. purchased it new feb 12 2016 steve moyer subaru

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 subaru forester. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v701000 (air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. the contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. vin tool confirms parts not available.

For the past month, my passenger airbag light will indicate it is "off" intermittently when a passenger is sitting in the seat, and the car's ignition is turned on and driving. i brought my subaru to the dealer to have it looked at and they quoted me a price of over $1,500 in repairs due to the need to replace the seat. the technician told me not to worry about it unless the light is on continuously. at that point, he said to contact the subaru corporation as this is a safety issue and to file a claim. as of yesterday (10/26/19) my passenger airbag light is "off"continuously with a passenger riding in the seat. the red airbag icon is lit up when the car's ignition is turned on and while driving. on the dashboard it indicates that my passenger airbag is "off". i have received an email from starlink stating to take it to a subaru retailer to have it checked as soon as possible. since i have already done this, i will be contacting subaru tomorrow. after researching, i saw that there was an investigation open to this problem and wanted to add my name to this list.

I turned my vehicle on in the morning and a red 'i' appeared and a warning that srs airbag system needed to be checked. the panel on the dashboard has an airbag light blinking. the passenger airbag light continues to say 'off' despite there being weight in the seat. there has been no damage to the seat including moisture or anything to damage the seat. happened completely at random.

When i start the car, this indicator turns on: srs airbag system needs to be checked passenger airbag remains "off" even person sits on the passenger seat. this happens when car is stopped or moving while the car is started.

The front passenger air bag turns off while a 130 lbs. passenger is riding in that seat. adjusting the seat forward or backward while traveling turns the sensor back on (indicating the passenger air bag is on), but as of today, 4-5 minutes later it would turn off again...occuring 5 times in 35 minutes. i fear that if we are involved in an accident, the airbag to protect my wife as a passenger may fail to deploy.

On october 2nd 2019 i was traveling on the express way at highway speeds when i was involved in an accident. damages to my car were so bad that the claims department deemed it as a total loss. the front of my car was completely smashed in. neither of my airbags deployed. i always thought that subarus were supposed to be safe so this is very disappointing. i'm not sure where to go from here about this but it is scary that this happened.*dt*jb

Airbag warning light registers off when passenger in seat. subaru dealer found codes b1650, occupant detection, and code b1760, sensor mat abnormal. determined that seat bottom with sensor needed to be replaced. 10/2/19 quote to replace airbag was $1168.00. is this issue covered under recall?

Front seat airbag sensor light came on and won't go off. code says that the seat sensor is not working and airbag stays off. moving, stationary and code will not reset

Passanger airbag is off no matter if someone is sitting in the seat and will not turn back on. this happens if it is sitting still or moving so not safe for passangers

The airbag sensor is not functioning properly. the airbag will turn off even when a passenger is sitting in the seat. i am worried about the safety of the vehicle. i am tried to contact my service department multiple times in the past few days with no call back.

Received recall notice about seat sensor and airbag defect. need to,get, this repaired as a recall, but parts supposedly not yet available. error messages since august when dealer told me that it was an air bag issue.

Intermittent dash light saying the passenger seat belt and air bag is turned off with passenger in the seat and when car is being driven. comes on in city and highway driving both..

Sensor in the passenger seat went bad under normal use and subaru does not want to cover expense to replace, and this sensor lets driver know if airbag is engaged (on) or not.

The passenger side airbag does not function. the sensor cannot tell when a passenger is present. this began happening intermittently, shortly after i purchased the vehicle new. in the past month, the airbags have not been on at all.

Airbag sensor for front passenger seat is defective. srs warning light remains on most of the time that the car is running. lights indicate airbag is off even with passenger in seat. dealer has checked computer; told me that i may have caused damage to the sensor, usually with water. seat has never been wet nor have we done anything that could damage the sensor. google search brings up numerous cases of same issue, indicating a possible widespread problem. i am advocating for a recall to repair this defect.

I purchased this vehicle early 2016, currently under 40k miles. the side passenger airbag warning suddenly came on stating the srs system needs checked. the warning comes and disappears sporadically. i tried wiggling and tightening the connection underneath the seat and the light was gone for over a month but it came back again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 subaru forester. when the vehicle was started, the air bag indicator illuminated. the next time the vehicle was started, the indicator did not appear. when the indicator illuminated again, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who suggested the contact take the vehicle to a dealer because the defect may be included in a recall. the contact took the vehicle to #1 cochran subaru of butler county (340 new castle rd, butler, pa 16001, 888-230-0231) where it was diagnosed that a sensor failed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure by letter. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 39,767. *dt consumer stated no edits except to say subaru reimbursed me the entire amt i paid for the repairs at #1 cockran in butler. vin number ######## 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb *tr*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 subaru forester. when the vehicle was started, the srs indicator illuminated. the contact called flatirons subaru at 877-464-2714 located at 5995 arapahoe ave, boulder, co 80303) and scheduled an appointment to have the vehicle checked. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 22,000. *dt *dt the consumer stated subaru found the occupant classification system malfunction code and will be repaired by subaru, but the consumer does not have the vehicle back. *tr

The car has had intermittent srs errors starting shortly after buying the car in summer of 2016. we have had it checked out and nothing was ever found. there does not appear to be any consistancy as to when the "srs airbag system needs to be checked" message appears. sometimes weeks go by with no errors. sometimes it will go on and not appear the next time the car is started. my concern is the srs airbag system is not function when needed. i am listing the most recent date this has happened below but as stated it has been intermittent for years.

Takata recall- when driving the passenger seatbelt light switches off even when the seat is occupied. i cannot let anyone occupy the seat because i feel it is not safe.

Front passenger air bag sensors erratically report a malfunction and suggest an inspection. this has happened both when vehicle is in motion as well as stationary. it has happened both with and without a front seat occupant. i called subaru america and brought the car into napleton subaru arlington heights, il on july 24, 2019. on that date i could not recreate the error messages. napleton inspected and told me system needed a reset which they did free of charge. since there was no error message either immediately before or after the visit, i had no way of knowing whether reset was effective. the next day the error message was back. pictures attached as well as receipt from napleton describing work performed. *tt consumer stated vehicle was taken into the dealer twice and is currently working properly, but cannot determine whether the air bag error message has been falsely activated. or if there is a real malfunction.*jb

The airbag sensor in the front passenger seat randomly goes off when there's a passenger in the car or not. the seat belt alarm for the passenger side goes off without a passenger in the car. airbag sensor says "off" with a passenger in the car. this is very unsafe, as i do not know if that airbag is truly functional, and also an annoyance, as the seatbelt alarm dings while i'm driving.

My vehicle all of a sudden began giving me a passenger side airbag censor error. no accidents occurred it just out of the blue appeared. i had to take my forester to the subaru dealership to be serviced where they confirmed that there was a problem with the passenger air bag.

Ods / air bag light goes on and off. doesn't matter if someone is sitting in the passenger seat or not. service department says we damaged the sensor for the passenger seat. part is in for repair and we're trying to schedule a time to get back into the dealer to have the do the repair at our cost.

Took suburu in for 30,000 mile check a couple of months ago. told dealership that the passenger airbag was inactivated (caution light on) while my wife sat in the seat. dealer said "it probably got wet". i told dealer rep we always garage our cars and we haven't spilled anything on the seat. they told us it would cost over $1000 to fix it. as we left they said the caution light went out, but it was on again before we got home (about 40 miles). at this time the caution light stays on almost continually. seems like a safety/recall issue to me.

In early may 2019, the vehicle started giving airbag warnings and disabling the front passenger airbag when the front passenger seat was occupied. i reported the problem to my subaru dealer's service department when i took it in for routine service a couple weeks later. it took a month to get an appointment to have the warning diagnosed. finally they did the analysis and told me the passenger seat sensor had failed, and claimed it was because the seat got wet (it didn't). after i complained to management they comp'd the repair and replaced the front passenger seat cushion at the end of june. the problem hasn't recurred.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 subaru forester. the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator was flashing and remained illuminated. hassett subaru (3520 sunrise hwy, wantagh, ny 11793, (516) 785-7800) was notified of the failure and diagnosed that the bottom of the front passenger seat needed replacement. the vehicle was not included in any air bag recall; however, the manufacturer issued four technical service bulletins for the air bags. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 37,000. *bf

Keep getting message "srs airbag system needs to be checked" while driving. dealer wants to replace the set sensor at my cost. the vehicle only has 41,000 miles. this is a known problem with this vehicle and subaru is not fixing the issue leaving driver in danger. this needs to be a recall!

The front passenger seat airbag occupancy sensor is malfunctioning and switching off the airbag when someone sits in the front passenger seat.

Tl* the contact owned a 2016 subaru forester. while driving approximately 50-55 mph, the vehicle hydroplaned, struck a wall, and was struck by three other vehicles. the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained a bruised face and minor contusions, which did not require medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage facility. a dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified. the cause of the failure was not determined. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

Srs message and warning light coming on. message srs system needs to be checked. made an appointment with my local subaru dealer i explained the issues showed them three pictures of the warning and indicators when the issue occurs. was told that their was nothing wrong. no active codes found. unable to have someone in the passengers seat in case the air bag does not deploy. contacted subaru have not responded. the waring and indicator light comes on when someone is setting in the passengers seat, with no one in the seat and with no one in the car in park with engine idling. the vehicle could be moving or parked idling and the warning and indicator light will come on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 subaru forester. the contact stated that a red warning indicator icon flashed intermittently inside the vehicle. the contact drove to subaru of rochester (4840 maine ave se, rochester, minnesota 55904, (507) 285-4777) and was informed that the occupant detection system sensor failed. the contact was provided a cost estimate for repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 55,000.

The occupant detection sensor for the front passenger seat does not work properly. it will occasionally set a warning while the vehicle is in motion, saying that the air bag system needs to be checked out, but then you can turn the vehicle off and back on and the warning disappears. the 'cure' is to replace the entire front passenger seat assembly! the following text from another complaint perfectly describes my situation: "subaru is knowingly building its cars with faulty passenger side air bag sensors which will randomly turn off the air bag while the passenger seat is occupied under normal life driving conditions. it is in the 2016 and 2017 owners manual that if there is a cell phone or electrical device in the front area of the car then the air bag sensors could malfunction. it also states that if your passenger is wearing a jacket or sweater this could cause the sensors to turn the life saving air bag off."

I copied this message from another complaint which explains exactly what i am trying to complaint. subaru is knowingly building its cars with faulty passenger side air bag sensors which will randomly turn off the air bag while the passenger seat is occupied under normal life driving conditions. it is in the 2016 and 2017 owners manual that if there is a cell phone or electrical device in the front area of the car then the air bag sensors could malfunction. it also states that if your passenger is wearing a jacket or sweater this could cause the sensors to turn the life saving air bag off. my 17 teenager had no electronics but a sweater on and it shut off air bag while traveling on highway. how is this legal to knowingly sell a car with faulty safety equipment. this link to subaru's website explains how their airbag sensor works http://www.stanleysubaru.com/blog/2012/august/6/how-does-the-occupant-detection-system-ods-work-in-my-subaru.htm

Passenger side air bags shuts off while passenger is in the seat while driving. reported to subaru and was told seat covers and phone charging cables might be causing the problem . upon further research others have been having the same problem with older subaru models and subaru will not fix so you have a 50/50 chance of your passenger air bag engaging in a accident.

Subaru is knowingly building its cars with faulty passenger side air bag sensors which will randomly turn off the air bag while the passenger seat is occupied under normal life driving conditions. it is in the 2016 and 2017 owners manual that if there is a cell phone or electrical device in the front area of the car then the air bag sensors could malfunction. it also states that if your passenger is wearing a jacket or sweater this could cause the sensors to turn the life saving air bag off. my 17 teenager had no electronics but a sweater on and it shut off air bag while traveling on highway. how is this legal to knowingly sell a car with faulty safety equipment . attached is the pages from the 2016 subaru forester owners manual.

This used vehicle was purchased from a dealer as a "great buy", with 74589 miles on may 23, 2018. less than one week later, bells and dings began sounding while driving, light indicators indicated that the srs system needed to be checked; that the passenger airbag was not on sometimes, other times it was..intermittent. car in motion both on city streets and on highway. no recalls were reported at that time, and i never knew while driving whether either side seatbelts were engaged when i knew they were, nor whether airbags were viable. dangerous for driver and for passenger. independent dealer and service departments were perplexed, dealerships had no available parts.....here it is, oct. 2, 2018, over 4 months later, and no parts available to dealers or authorized repair companies to comply with safety regulations. this vehicle is unsafe; subaru needs to provide parts at no expense to this customer to assure safety. and, they need to issue a recall or face potential lawsuits.... ## vin passed ## subaru forester 2016 ##

Keep getting message "srs airbag system needs to be checked" while driving. the passenger airbag turns off when message displays. when the message comes up, it will stay for a few hours to a few days. my passenger is left without protection in case of an accident.

My passenger airbag light go on and off to signal if the passenger seat airbag system is activated or not. dealer diagnosis is that the sensor in the seat is bad. the replacement part and labor is over $1000 because it is integrated into the seat. i called subaru and they are willing to pay for half, however this is an unacceptable solution. the airbag system on such a new car should be fully functioning and subaru should take full responsibility for such a problem as the sensor in the seat since they made it so expensive to replace due to the integration into the seat, you can't just replace that one sensor.

The passenger side airbag will not deploy if there is a cushion on the seat. this was not explained to me until after i complained and i was then told that i should have read the owner's manual. unfortunately, the owner's manual is not available until after the car's purchase and even then i would have had to know that my arthritis was going to get severe enough to need a cushion. the non-deployment of my passenger side air bag is very dangerous. *js the consumer stated the also would not deploy in the passenger sits in the seat while wet. the consumer requested an update. *js

My accident involved hitting a tree head-on traveling at least 10-15 mph. i would have thought at least 3 airbags would have deployed (side curtain, steering, and dash for knees) preventing me from hitting my head.

My subaru has experienced a malfunction of the passenger air bag restraint system since july of 2017. i took the vehicle to the dealer where i purchased it in 2016, joseph subaru in florence, ky on august 2, 2017. the technician diagnosed a switch malfunction under the passenger seat. the service manager assured me that the part would be ordered and the vehicle would be scheduled for repair. after three weeks with no response, i called joseph subaru to ask about the status. he assured me me that the part had been ordered on august 2 and that i could expect the part to be available after one month. the part was never made available. i contacted subaru of america on october 2, 2017 to register a complaint. i got no response. i contacted subaru electronically on october 23, 2017. i received a claim number sr #:1-27120984562. it is now december 6, 2017 and i have received no repair and no clarification. no one has made any effort to correct the fault. it is a hazard to me and any riders in my vehicle.

Front end total collision traveling approximately 30mph on a residential section of a main street. hit, and broke, a telephone pole. car deemed totaled. no airbags deployed.

When in motion, the occupancy detector sensor light intermittently illuminates even when there is no passenger in the seat. this is currently happening in my 2016 forester and also happened in my 2014 forester.

My airbag light goes on to signal the airbags are not working. it goes off and on at will. i have taken the car to the dealership 4 times now and finally they think they know what is wrong, but will not have the part to fix the problem until sometime in the future. the bluetooth is so bad that the people i talk to cannot hear me. big safety concerns.

There were 5 major issues with my vehicle that i want investigated. i was driving straight nb on us-101 in the #1 lane of traffic, going approximately 75 mph, when for no explainable reason, the rear tires of my 2016 subaru forester began to skid me across the #2 lane of traffic. i will note that it had just stopped sprinkling and the road was damp. issue 1: during my skid, the skid control feature never engaged (which is a marketed feature and a reason i purchased this vehicle). i had to fight the skid on my own. issue 2: the roll over feature never engaged (which is a marketed feature and another reason i purchased this vehicle). after fighting to prevent my vehicle from rolling over and skidding out of control, i ultimately crash on the shoulder of the freeway, hitting a light post. issue 3: upon hitting the light post, my seat belt flew off. (both my hands were on the wheel at the time and there were no loose objects in the area. unless this is some "feature" it is extremely dangerous for the seat belt to disengage automatically.) issue 4: the crash notification feature, that i paid extra for, did not do it's job. even with my cell phone linked to the vehicle, the crash notification never called 9-1-1 on my behalf. i immediately called 9-1-1 to notify chp of my accident because i was fearful of another vehicle also spinning out of control and hitting me. chp took a report. ** issue 5 **: the air bags never deployed. none of the air bags deployed. my car was deemed totaled by the insurance company and auto body shop. the auto body shop stated vehicle hit the pole so hard all bolts were bent into a 45 degree angle. how does a crash that severe not engage the air bags? i had a scar on my collar bone for a month after the crash. none of the marketed or required safety features worked to prevent the crash nor assist after the crash.

Takata recall vehicle accellerated, brakes did not stop vehicle, accident took place injuring my wife, physically, emotionally & psychologically. air bags did not deploy. wife was trying to park, when vehicle sped up and her braking had no effect and she crashed into a parked vehicle.

Passenger detection system to turn on airbag has been intermittent since shortly after purchasing. will turn off passenger air bag with an adult present in the seat, or not turn it on initially. now it is almost always off at some point in a driving experience. several attempts to get it checked out were made but required too long and no loaner was available. after getting a second car, it was taken to the dealer where it was purchased be tested october 2, 2018 and parts were ordered. when i tried to find when the part may come in after about 2 weeks, no information was available. the system acknowledges the presence of a passenger because it gives a warning on the display that it needs service but it leaves airbag off anyway. i believe it has been too long waiting for parts for a safety system problem. this has obviously been a known issue for several model years according to complaints to nhtsa and on subaru owner's forums.
