Problems with 2016 RAM 1500 ENGINE

On average, the 2016 RAM 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 52 793 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2016 RAM 1500

Aem reflash as required by the fca emissions recall #v08 has caused the truck to accelerate very slowly, causing numerous near misses when crossing and turning past oncoming traffic. dealership reports all recalled customers are reporting the same issues.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to wolfechase chrysler dodge jeep ram (8170 us-64, bartlett, tn 38133, (901)-373-3030) to be repaired per an unknown recall regarding the eco diesel engine emission. the repair did not correct the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle lost acceleration while driving at any speed and the fuel mileage was reduced. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 44,153.

I bought the truck new and was very happy with it until the emission update. once i had the update done to the truck its was a total different truck. it doesn't have as much power and it has major turbo lag when accelerating especially when cold. i am very disappointed with fca and probably will never buy another fca product unless they make it right with all of the owners of these vehicles. looks like i will be looking at ford in the near future.

Ecodiesel emission fix . well i loved my truck till they fixed it .now at low speeds it doesn't accelerate making it very dangerous. i took it back to ram and they said that's the fix and it was the governments fault. well i know it's fca fault and i don't think they can fix it properly or they would of done so at the factory.. someone will be killed or kill someone . when you hit the pedal and nothing happens for 2 to 3 seconds than takes off someone will get hurt . to think our government and the state of california agreed to this is a disgrace. i'll never buy a fca product and tell everyone the same

After getting the ecodiesel emission recall my truck does not accelerate when cold. have several near collisions after pulling out into traffic and nothing happens, it does not respond to pedal for 3 seconds. contacted fca and they refer me to dealer, dealer says it is fca software issue.

I own a ram 1500 ecodiesel 2016 laramie. i got the aem emission recall and the like other people i have an acceleration problem after the recall. i have been to dealership about it. i have put tickets into fca and they are telling me that there is nothing that can be done. here is a video of the issue. https://youtu.be/qlt7xplka3a this is sever when the truck is cold. i am very concerned about the safety of this truck. i will not put my 5 year son in the truck if it is cold. any help you can provid e on this issue would be appreciated.

Dangerous and inconsistent engine power. after update of ecu for emissions (v08) control recall the vehicle is not safely drivable. when trying to pull out or away acceleration just doesn't happen, truck fails to move and is subject to being hit. after a couple seconds power returns. the dealership says there is nothing they can do to fix this, 'that's the way it is now' is what i've been told. fca agreed to make this em emissions update with no change in performance, this has not been the case. if not fixed people are going to be killed in an accidents. i have several close calls already.

After the fca emissions recall, my vehicle has a substantial 'lag' after pressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle lacks engine power, and is unsafe to drive. it is a jazzers when trying to pull out with oncoming traffic. i took it back to dealership and they said it is operating as designed. this vehicle is unsafe as designed if this is truly the design. dodge needs to be forced to address the 'lag' in acceleration and lack of power before someone gets injured or worse.

After getting the epa required emissions recall completed (v08) this truck is unsafe to operate when the engine is cold. there is a long delay in throttle response (3-5 seconds from the time i hit the throttle from a stop until the time the truck has any sort of response) which makes it extremely unsafe to pull out into traffic or cross traffic lanes. there is also very little throttle response when trying to accelerate onto a freeway. i have already had a few near misses in the 3 weeks after i had the update done. none of these issues existed before the v08 recall was preformed.

After receiving the emissions recall update v08 on my ram ecodiesel it now has a lag when pressing the gas pedal that has nearly resulted in me being hit by other drivers because the truck will not accelerate properly. this is most noticeable when at a stop and making a left hand turn.

After aem emission control systems update the truck at 57,920 has poor acceleration from a start. it doesn't get out of its on way. mileage dropped 4 mpg. has poor acceleration up hills. this update claimed to not alter the way the vehicle drives and that is not the case. this is not the truck that i originally bought. i have been almost hit several times pulling out into traffic because of the poor acceleration from a stop "turbo lag" this is a safety hazard.

After having the aem recall done truck has lack of power. when accelerating from stop truck does not take off right away. gets a little better when warmed up but still very sluggish.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. while driving 65 mph, a loud rattling noise was detected. the vehicle stalled and was pulled over to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the contact and his son-in-law diagnosed the failure as cylinder two misfiring. the heads were replaced, but the vehicle was still currently awaiting other repairs. thunder chrysler dodge jeep ram (1425 w main st, bartow, fl 33830, (863) 533-0793) was called and informed the contact that there were no recalls for the engine. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to respond. the check engine warning was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to maddox motor company located at 564 glover rd, sidney, ne 69162, (308)254-5577 to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that engine control module software needed to be updated. the software update was performed however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

I own a 2016 dodge ram eco diesel that was forced to have the epa update completed as part of the class action settlement. since the update was completed i have been having issues with inconsistent power and acceleration. the problem is intermittent and has almost resulted in collisions on several occasions. this issue is especially dangerous when making left hand turns across traffic and the truck decides to delay 2-3 seconds in the acceleration process. i have contacted the dealer as well as the manufacturer and have been met with stone walking bug both of them. i have complained several times but they refuse to even take the truck in for diagnostics sitting the lack of engine trouble codes. the manufacturer angrily refers me to the department that is handling the settlement and states that the epa is making them do this and there is nothing they can do. when i try reaching out to the department handling the recall/settlement it is met with unreachable agents and an endless loop on a phone system. at this point i fearful to drive the truck and especially transport my child in it. i am at a wits end and am asking for involvement from your organization. my name is [xxx] and can be reached at [xxx] for any additional information. thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

After the recall, my ram ecodiesel has no power at all, it is dangerous to drive until it gets up to operating temperature. even then, it is very sluggish, sometimes dangerously slow like when turning left with on-coming traffic. this was not the case before the aem recall due to the emissions issue. while mine has not doe this, i am part of a group of additional owners, of which an alarming number have caught fire post aem recall. also a very high number of engine failures. i am concerned there are major design flaws, and now this latest update simply makes it dangerous to drive.

Fca ecodiesel emissions recall - aem software update was performed on my 2016 ram ecodiesel (june 3, 2019) by servicing dealer. software update was not supposed to impact vehicle performance, drivability, fuel economy, etc. this is not the case as all indicated characteristics have been negatively affected by this update. most concerning is the aem recall software update has induced a significant throttle response delay when trying to accelerate from a stop or at low speeds until the engine reaches full operating temperature. in some instances throttle response delay is as long as 3 or 4 seconds before the engine will respond and accelerate. this creates an extremely dangerous condition when trying to turn onto a busy road or accelerate in normal or heavy traffic conditions. i do not feel comfortable turning onto a busy road until the engine is at full temperature for fear of causing an accident. once the engine drops below a certain temperature the acceleration delay comes back. this issue needs to be addressed with fca chrysler asap before people get hurt or killed.

Since getting the ram eco diesel mandatory recall / re flash. i have experienced a "dead pedal." it's not as bad in warmer weather but now we are starting to experience colder mornings and winter is right around the corner. the drive-ability of the vehicle is unsafe and unsettling. i am worried about my family now.

Loud lifter noise at cold start and ideling stationary and in motion

2016 ram ecodiesel has had the required epa compliance update to engine and transmission ecms. post update, throttle response from the vehicle when the engine is not fully up to temperature is very sluggish...takes up to a couple seconds to start accelerating. this has caused me to nearly be hit by oncoming traffic while waiting for the vehicle to start accelerating. once the engine warms up after a few minutes, the vehicle response to input on the accelerator pedal returns to normal.

My vehicle was part of a recent ecodiesel settlement that required a recall and re-flash of the vehicles ecm. fca stated that the recall re-flash would not affect the vehicles performance. that is not the cash. my vehicle now has a severe throttle hesitation when starting from a stop. pulling into or merging into existing traffic has become extremely dangerous. i have been experiencing this condition since the recall was completed.

Received the v08 recall update. was told this update would not affect the performance, drivability, efficiency nor safety of the vehicle. this is completely untrue!! the vehicle performance is plagued with dangerous delays in acceleration, poor shifting to the point of being a significant life-safety issue!! from a stopped position, stepping on the gas will produce a 2-3 second delay. this is especially dangerous when pulling out into traffic - severe risk of being broad-sided or rear-ended! gear shifts are out of sync and do not provide sufficient performance to avoid accidents from a stopped (i.e. intersection) or moving (i.e. passing at freeway speeds) motion. too many close-calls with potentially dangerous/fatal accidents due to significantly modified and hindered recall update!! these issues are well-documented online and consistent with other vehicle owners whom have had this recall update. it needs to be corrected immediately before before people start to get seriously hurt and/or die!!!

After having the required aem recall flashed to my ecodiesel ecu the truck has serious performance issues that did not exist before. i have almost been hit a couple of times because of horrible lag. i have had 2 ecodiesel trucks, a 2014 and this 2016 and this kind of scary lack of power was never an issue before the epa settlement update. the driveability and safety have been dramatically reduced.

Truck was running fine with no issues until the emissions v08 recall. truck now has a significant lag when accelerating from a stopped position. it typically happens when turning (pulling out from a stopped position). it has almost caused us to get in to two different accidents due to lack of acceleration. my whole family was in the car at the time. i refuse to let my children ride as passengers now because it is a huge safety risk. my truck was fine before the recall software update (v08) and now it's a huge safety hazard.

I took my ecodiesel truck to my local fca dealership and they installed the approved emission modification (aem). after i received my truck back from the dealership, there was a very noticeable increased throttle response lag from a stop. after applying wide open throttle (wot), the truck would not respond for 3-4 seconds. the aem specifically states that the "performance" of the truck will not be impacted; which is not what i personally experienced. the throttle response lag post-aem install almost got me into two accidents while trying to take a right turn onto a highway. this experience has been well documented by other ecodiesel owners on internet forums and via youtube videos demonstrating this safety issue. fca failed to disclose this throttle response issue; as a result they have created a safety concern for their customers, to include myself, post-aem install. i pulled out the dealership lot expecting a certain level of performance from the truck i know extremely well, but was quickly surprised to find myself in a dangerous situation due to the throttle lag. as a result, i have changed my daily driving habits to account for this significant reduction in low end performance post-aem install.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. while the vehicle was at a complete stop, the throttle failed to accelerate. there were no warning indicators illuminated. after the contact applied full pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle slowly accelerated and the turbo engine responded, which then caused the vehicle to accelerate rapidly. the vehicle was taken to lithia dodge (4025 10th ave great falls, mt 59405, 406-205-3430) where it was diagnosed that the turbo engine failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000.

Eco diesel emissions update, upon having my truck ecm flashed with the court settlement emission update, i have observed severe power loss. to the point of 4-5 seconds of delay when initially pulling out in to traffic on any road or highway. very sluggish and has almost caused me to have an accident . this started immediately after the update . my truck drove fine before the update.

Eco diesel recall on emissions, and now have safety acceleration or "lack of" from a stop, fuel economy went way down and use of alot def, ram is aware of it and have not fix check engine light has been on for past 4 months dealers reset and still comes back on, dealers can't fix and don't know how they stated wait for dodge fca i was dealing with felicia us customer care case number [xxx] fca she had to cancel case instructed by her bosses because their is no fix.*dt consumer stated failed software was installed which made it unsafe to drive. Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. while driving 15 mph down a hill, all the instrument panel indicators began to blink and the engine shut off. all power was lost and the contact had to stand on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. when the vehicle was restarted, the failure recurred twice while traveling down the hill. the contact was finally able to stop the vehicle at the bottom of the hill. the contact parked the vehicle for a few minutes before driving home. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 27,800.

Total engine failure. chrysler in process of replacing engine that was repaired at 1oi miles for the same problem. transmission has stuck in either 3rd or 5th gear and would not downshift or upshift - second time the transmission has done this. have a video proving shifting faults. in both instances, the vehicle was either idling or in motion for the engine failures and was in motion in both instances when with the transmission failure. several dealer recalls have been made on the vehicle that did not involve either of the above. window clips have been replaced for driver side front window several times because they either break or come off and have to be repaired with new clips each time. if they are not replaced, there is a risk that the window will crash inside the door if attempt is made to roll down or roll up the power window. vehicle is currently in the dealership shop for engine replacement; documentation is not yet available for this instance but can be provided when it becomes available.

While driving truck the engine light came on and there was a loud noise. brought it to shop and they said the lifter slipped out of plastic tray it was in and messed of the camshaft. who uses plastic in a hemi engine that gets so hot. it was scary cuz the truck was missing and i was afraid it would stop while i was on freeway in houston texas. this is a common problem with this engine. the 2013-2015 were recalled for this and apparently it isn't any better with the 2016. please check into it.

Lifter started knocking on highway going 70 mph. there are 3 trucks in the shop at the sesame time with same problem. 2013-2015 they recalled the trucks. and now it's with the 2016 and newer. when going at low speed it rides smooth

Vehicle was running. serious oil leak formed between the top of the engine block and the oil filter adapter (this part also houses two sensors and an oil cooler). this leak is so severe oil pools on top of the block and runs down the back of the engine directly onto transmission bell housing and exhaust piping. hot piping causes oil to burn and creates risk of fire. this is an extremely widespread problem with 2014 and newer chrysler vehicles that are equipped with the 3.6 liter 'pentastar' v6. chrysler has so far refused to recall the parts, design a suitable replacement part, or fix the issue outside of the basic power train warranty.

Exhaust manifold bolts have sheared and snapped. with less than 50k miles on the truck the exhaust manifold bolts have sheared. this results in a leak of exhaust gases into the cabin of the truck. making the vehicle unsafe and at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. the ram dealership stated that this is a common problem 3/6/2019

When starting my vehicle i noticed a ticking sound. after idling a couple minutes the ticking would get quieter. recently i can still hear the ticking while driving. i've heard it could be the manifold bolts getting sheered off or it can be the purge solenoid. to me it sounds like a lifter ticking.

Driving on a highway at 60 m/h engine start smoking and caught on fire without any previous alert or check engine light on after i pullover and lift the hood to inspect the smoke.

Coolant bipass valve stuck in one position and costs 8 $800 to fix. this was a recall on previous years and clearly hadn't been fixed. should be under recall

Check engine light popped on with 20,400 miles on 2016 vehicle while driving straight about 40 mph on a city road. dealership read the code as 'coolant bypass valve stuck'. dirt and debris was found in the connector. was cleaned and lubricated.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. while pulling out of the driveway at 2 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the message center displayed "service throttle body". the vehicle lost acceleration and power. the vehicle was taken to tacoma dodge chrysler jeep ram (4101 s tacoma way, tacoma, wa 98409), but they could not determine the cause of the failure. the contact stated that once the failure code was erased, the failure went away. the contact also stated that this was the sixth time the vehicle was brought to the dealer for the same failure since april of 2018. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided case number: s171800032. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 46,000. *dt updated 12/20/18*jb

I have a 2016 ram ecodiesel fully loaded limited 1500 and i have had nothing but problems with it this past year. i have gone to three different dealerships and none of them can fix the vehicle it only has 40k miles on it and is in perfect condition other than now it is overheating and the fan is on constantly. i believe maybe there is a leak in the coolant line? i don't know, the service departments have been useless, i have been to the dealerships with the problem about 10 times. what do i do? it was a very expensive vehicle and i don't think i should have to be going through this. how do i get ram to respond? who do i contact to file a complaint with them?

Intermitment "service electronic braking system" message displays on the dash, unresolved by dealer service department after multiple visits. occurs randomly while vehicle is driving or parked. started happening randomly prior to 05/08/2018 random "service electronic throttle control" message has displayed on dash putting truck into reduced power/speed while driving. took truck into dealership for reset, no explaination why issue happened. happened the first time on 05/08/2018 while driving, again on 7/3/2018, and again on 8/17/2018. "service def system see dealer" message displayed on dash informing me to see the dealer. service advisor reset issue with no explaination of why proplem occured. happened on 9/30/2018 while driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. while driving 70 mph, the service electronic control indicator illuminated and the vehicle would inadvertently decelerate. the contact pulled over to the side of the road, turned off and restarted the engine; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a dealer (tate dodge chrysler jeep, 7429 ritchie hwy, glen burnie, md 21061, (410) 690- 3901) where it was diagnosed that the throttle body and ecu/computer needed to be flushed and reprogrammed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the warranty had expired. the failure mileage was 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ram 1500. when the contact started the vehicle, the fuel gauge went to empty and the fuel sensor and engine warning indicators flashed. the dealer (don jackson chrysler dodge jeep ram, 3950 jonesboro rd, union city, ga 30291, (770) 969-7229) was notified. the contact made several calls, but was unable to schedule a diagnostic appointment with the dealer. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 50,550.

Engine seized up.

The truck was put into park with the key in the ignition and the engine running. it was parked in a restaurant parking lot. then around five minutes later, it went into reverse and began rolling backwards. it seemed to accelerate. i had to jump in and slam on the brake to stop it. i do not know how this could occur, but have recently learned of recalls for similar situation with the truck in the parked position, but going into gear. our vin was not recalled. there were witnesses to this event.

While driving the truck at night the lights flicker almost like as if you were flashing your lights at someone in front of you, this truck has been to dealership a total of 16 times for this reason. first they told me it was the way dodge built my truck and that it was normal, then next time we took it in they told me that it was my toll tag, i questioned ok which is it dodge made my truck this way or my toll tag, we got no response. now they just put my shop in the bay and leave it and do nothing to it for a couple of days then call me and tell me it's ready, yea been caught on camera buddies, see how warranty likes those videos ,y'all charging warranty for the work but your caught on camera doing absolutely nothing to my truck . good luck

When i get below 1/4 of a tank i have a fuel sensor failure every time that trows a check engine light

I had a sudden loss of power and an abrupt deceleration while driving out of my development. the service electronic throttle control and check engine lights appeared on the dash. this happened on may 17, 2017 and some of the vehicles ecodiesel fuel injectors were replaced. 2000 miles later almost the same exact thing happened on july 14, 2017. currently additional injectors are being replaced. i am thankful neither time was while driving at highway speeds on a busy road.

Truck proceeding at about 30-35 miles per hr. on a main city street when a car traveled directly in front of it due to its failure to stop at a stop sign on a side street. front of truck crashed into car. extensive damage to front of truck resulted. questioning why no deployment of air bag in this head- on crash. truck's driver hit steering wheel with forehead and was knocked unconscious for a brief period of time. neck and hip injuries were likewise sustained. driver of truck was ambulanced to nearby hospital for tests and observation. driver of truck was wearing seatbelt at time of collision. police report not yet available. accident occurred 4/3/17 in the evening.

My son was driving south on i-15 towards san diego at 65mph in the travel lane (2nd left most lane) when his new truck suddenly and without warning completely shut itself off. the main screen on the dash prompted to shift into park (the truck was traveling at 65 mph at the time) to restart the truck. he was unable to pull over to the left due to the hov lane being very busy - he traversed three lanes of traffic to the right in a vehicle without power, or steering assist, and an inoperable electrical system. the blinker column switch did not activate the indicator lights. he was able to activate the emergency hazard flasher lights to show his emergent need to stop on the right shoulder. he stopped the truck near exit 31 on i-15 south. he was able to shift the truck into park and restart the truck. he was forced to continue driving the truck to nas north island san diego because he was on the flight schedule for a annual flight evaluation pre- deployment. the vehicle failure could easily have resulted in a fatality if another driver, less able to handle unforeseen dangerous mechanical failures, could have panicked in crowded california traffic. my son states that he has lost confidence in the vehicle, moreover that it is dangerous to the vehicle occupants and individuals who might be involved in a crashed caused by the sudden failure of the vehicle systems.
