Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2007 Nissan Xterra

I was driving down the street at approximately 45 mph. the vehicle began to vibrate horribly. the electrical component that informed me whether i have the vehicle on drive turned off. the check engine light came on. the car began to decelerate. i was having problems getting the vehicle to accelerate. eventually the vehicle turned off. i took the vehicle to the mechanic who informed me that coolant has entered the transmission and ruined it. now the vehicle will not start because the coolant shorted the vehicle. *tr

nissan has a confirmed problem where coolant from a faulty radiator component leaks into the transmission and causes slipping or won't shift to overdrive. they have extended the warranty out on the radiator to 80,000, but are hesitant to commit on the permanently damaged transmissions. a flush won't solve the problem. i was merging in city traffic and had a upshift failure where it just vibrated almost causing a accident. the initial condition is dangerous, and nissans unwillingness to commit to replace the terminal transmissions even inside the 80,000 extension seems like throwing a risky and expensive situation on the customer. very disappointed in nissans sheepishness, expected more on a well publicized and documented concern. i feel this is a dangerous situation. *tr

Started smelling a burning smell. noticed a fluid leaking under the car. dealership said transmission needed to be replaced but didn't give any further details. topped off transmission fluid since it was low. 30 miles later, while doing 65 mph on the freeway in traffic, the car suddenly slipped out of gear and slowed drastically almost causing the car behind me to rear end me. i slowed and it popped back into gear. i got it off the freeway and was then able to barely get it into a parking lot. i had it towed to a repair shop and was informed that fluid from the radiator was leaking into the transmission which damaged the transmission. i went back to the nissan dealer and they apologized for not providing me all of the details and stated that nissan is aware of the "design flaw in the radiator" but is not covering any of the repairs. *tr

My nissan which i loved originally when i purchased it brand new has been nothing but problems and i have maintained it and serviced it faithfully. i had taken my truck for service twice prior to this incident for regular maintenance and nothing was detected as far as the radiator cracking. this is what causes the transmission to go. the first time i went for service it was still under warranty nothing was said. the second time at 80588 another service was done basic oil change and tire rotation supposedly everything checked out fine each time a multi point inspections was done. i imagine this includes placing the vehicle on the diagnostic computerized machine. well, shortly after this is when my major problems began. my vehicle began to vibrate as if i was on the highway riding on the shoulder were the warning strips with the grids vibrates your car when you go over onto them. i related the vibration to the recent tire rotation i checked the tires made sure nuts were tight and nothing was off; everything checked out fine. the awkward vibration continued so i scheduled an appointment with my local nissan dealer and that?s when i got the devastating news a whopping $7371.00 in repairs for a cracked radiator and damaged transmission. there were no warning signs what so ever no engine light, no overheating, and no smell of antifreeze. nissan is fully aware of the problem and so are the dealers. nothing was said to me with prior visits and they quickly knew what the problem was and were certain of the problem. these dealers are definitely aware and making money off innocent consumers for these unjust out of pocket repairs. where is the justice in all of this? *tr

My transmission starting slipping. the problem was that the radiator cracked and allowed anti-freeze to leak into the transmission. our winters are very snowy, icy and cold leaving me without heat and in a dangerous situation in wintry conditions. *tr

Coolant leak into transmission. common problem to design flaw. costly $5,000+ repair. *tr

I purchased a 2007 xterra at the beginning of the year with just over 80,000. i have the problem where the radiator and transmission failed simultaneously. i am currently paying a $292.00 note on a car that will not move. i felt comforted in the fact that i purchased the extended warranty with coverage for 100,000 miles or 6 years after the purchase. the factory warranty will not cover the cost to repair the radiator. even though i have warranty coverage for transmission, the same dealership that sold me the expensive extended warranty and overcharged for the car is trying to charge $7700 for the job with new parts or $5500 to do the job with used parts. i know now that the job would have to utilize a new radiator because the original radiators are causing coolant and transmission fluid to mix. i see reports that nissan is starting to recognize the fact that they have faulty radiators but is not holding themselves liable for any of the damages to any of the parts of the car even though most it is under warranty (even though everyone's radiator should have a factory recall by now). there is even a new york times article about the radiator/transmission problem with multiple nissan models. it is written in the contract that if the radiator causes the problem, then the transmission damages will not be covered. also the radiator, which seems to be the part causing all of the problems, is not even covered at all in the warranty nor is it under a factory recall. i purchased a certified pre-owned car with a warranty because i did not want to have a car that would give me further financial troubles in costly repairs. nissan is aware of this problem, but does not take any responsibility because of how much it would cost to repair radiators and/or transmissions for everyone that owns an xterra, frontier or pathfinder. *tr

2007 nissan xterra radiator failed and about a month later the transmission failed due to antifreeze in the transmission. the nissan xterra was slipping on the highway causing the vehicle to slow as traffic was approaching on all sides. the vehicle lost forward drive control. *tr

At about 1200 rpm i start to feel a vibration which i think is coming from the transmission. once i get above 1500 rpm it quits and resumes normal driving condition. i did have my transmission filter and fluids changed right after this started. the mechanic did tell my that the fluid appeared to be milky and he said that he had heard about this problem in some nissan vehicles. he also said he knew about the transmission coolers in the radiator becoming faulty and would cause radiator fluid (antifreeze) to mix in with the transmission through the transmission lines. there was no symptoms that alerted me before hand, it just happened and i knew there was an issue, took it to my mechanic and discovered what i mentioned above. please inform me what i may be able to do. thanks *tr

Shuddering noise. then transmission failure. *js

Transmission and radiator failure making it unsafe to drive, nissan company is well aware of these issues and refuse to do a recall and refuse to let their customers to be aware of the issue. as for me i am pre-med and i need my vehicle to get to school and work i as caregiver for an elderly man and woman so not a very much of an income so i depend on my car about a month ago i was driving on the highway when i heard a noise at the back end shuddered as if i was driving over rumble strips i took it in on my next oil change. *kb

Nissan unsafe failure parts transmission and radiators hi my name is [xxx] my story begins as a happy one, but soon turns out to be my worst nightmare back in november 2007. i bought my first car a 2007 nissan xterra from avondale nissan brand new which is now paid off. it was a very nice vehicle, had really small issues with normal wear and tear and normal maintenance which i kept up on myself. right now i'm attending asu for premed and i need my vehicle to get to school. the issue started when i was driving on the highway, all of sudden i heard a noise and the back end shuddered as if i was driving over rumble strips. i took it in on my next oil change to discover that the transmission fluid had leaked into the coolant, then i had the radiator replaced, then a couple months later my engine light came on and the same issue which i was previously having with the my transmission fluid leaking into the coolant began again. in addition to that incident, i was told from numerous dealerships including nissan that the radiator was damaged and now the transmission was also damage. i then started googling the problem and to my surprise to find out that so many other nissan owners were experiencing the same problem. this horrified me when i went to the dealership where i purchased it new in 2007. the service advisor in the service department told me this is a terrible problem because nissan is aware of this horrible design flaw on nissan's part and they're not doing anything to help their customers, he said that nissan is not going to do a recall at all its just a defect. he also stated that to fix the transmission and get another radiator would cost $500 for the radiator and $5155 for transmission not including tax or labor. i will never in my life ever buy a nissan again nor would i recommend someone to purchase it! i'm not getting any answers from them they are fully aware of this unsafe defect. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *kb

Noticed that the vehicle was shifting hard especially in overdrive. soon after the vehicle overheated on 4/4/11. added coolant to get to garage. upon inspection found that there was coolant in the transmission. had it towed to the dealer and they confirmed that there was a crack in the transmission cooler and it put coolant into the transmission. the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $7400. i called the dealer i purchased the vehicle from and they told me there was nothing they could do for me it was a nissan issue. called nissan customer support filed a complaint. after reviewing my complaint they told me there was nothing they could do for me. searched on line and found that there are many nissan's from 2005 -2007 with this failure. nissan is ignoring the issue. contacted the attorney general's office and they are investigating. the vehicle is currently at a nissan dealership and has been since 4/5/11. we feel that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. *tr

2007 nissan xterra power train/timing chain problem. the vehicle was purchased new and was regularly maintained. the repair is a major cost from $1600 to $2500 to repair it was slightly over the maintenance when problem discovered by nissan on a regular service visit. a claim with nissan corp. was made and initially denied after several months of not being able to drive the vehicle worried that the engine would go. i continued to fight the denial and comply with all their request to obtain records on all maintenance done to vehicle. they finally responded and only paid a portion of the repair. the repair cost was still an economic burden. the parts were replaced to my knowledge. i am very displeased with the outcome especially being a loyal customer for many years. i am truly disappointed with how nissan treats their customers and will never purchase a nissan vehicle again! *tr

Started making noises coming from underneath and jerking, so was taken to dealership and they said it was the rear end which they replaced under warranty , but still made noise and slight clunking. took into another dealership nov of 2012 and they flushed the transmission and said everything was fine at approx 119000 miles. then today at 129,000 miles said my rear end needed replacement and my transmission was bad and the fluid was milky from cross contamination , which is a known issue with these type of suvs. said they will not cover it cause its over 100000 miles now . *tr

Battery died. after replacing the battery something happened to the transmission. the vehicle was "stuck" in 4th gear. had to have the valve body replaced. the vehicle is 31/2 years old and the valve body was corroded. had to be put on a waiting list for the part from the dealership. there has to be many of these cars having the same problem if there is a waiting list for the part. *tr

Ok the dealer replaced the clutch and flywheel and all the other clutch parts with new oem parts so we will see how many miles i get this time before it brakes down again. it is mid april and car is still rolling. i have 2 more yrs before the powertrain warranty expires and dealer manager said that it will be cover and replaced if it brakes down before that. hope i won't have to prove with the edmunds xterra forum print outs that i am not the only one with this problem in my car. my gas sensor was also replaced while they work on my car....so so far i am glad with anchorage, alaska nissan dealership. *tr

2007 nissan xterra radiator failed mixed anti-freeze with transmission fluid, transmission stopped working in middle of dangerous intersection no warning! $5000.00 to repair. nissan and dealer say that there is nothing being done by nissan to fix problem. *tr

I drive a 2007 nissan xterra at 41000 miles the clutch in my standard transmission started to slip. i took it in to the dealer (i purchased a 60,000 mile power train warranty) they charged me 135$ to remove one easily accessible bolt and tell me my clutch was bad (i told them this before i handed them the keys) and not covered by warranty as it is a ?ware part?. as the clutch is part of the power train it should have been covered. i was able to drive the car 40+ miles to my garage but had to buy an aftermarket clutch after researching and finding the factory part is defective and many have had it go bad after 10,000 miles or less. *tr

My xterra could only go up to 40 mph. the clutch felt funny like it was loose. took it to the dealer that i bought if from and they said the clutch has to be replaced. it has just over 28,000 miles and i bought the 2007 xterra brand new. a clutch should last longer than 3 years! i paid over $1,600.00 for the repair. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. while driving 40 mph and shifting gears, the clutch failed. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the clutch was replaced. the failure recurred immediately after the contact drove eighteen miles. the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic that previously repaired the vehicle and replaced the clutch again. the contact also stated that the heater and air conditioner fuses became inoperable. when he consulted an authorized dealer, he was informed that the fan blower was defective and needed to be replaced. the fuse failed again and the dealer replaced the blower motor twice. the dealer also suspected that an electrical harness may have caused the failure to occur but the parts would not be available until the end of june 2010. the contact called the manufacturer who confirmed that his warranty had expired; therefore, he would be responsible for the repair expenses. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000. the current mileage was approximately 67,000.

Bought 2007 nissan xterra in september of 2007; sept of 2008 had to replace the clutch, with 23,000 miles on it. i've drove a standard car for 12 years before i ever replaced the clutch. i called the dealer and they would not replace it. i was stuck with replacing it. bad clutch! *tr
