We have classified the 208 complaints from 2007 Nissan Xterra about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I took my nissan xterra 2007 into boulder nissan in october 2013. at the time, it had under 100,000 miles. upon examination of the car for lack of heat, they said they flushed it and eventually i would have to replace the radiator. they did not tell me that there was a class action lawsuit against nissan for defective parts leaking coolant into the transmission. i returned to nissan in jan. 2015 for the same problem and was hit with a bill for $5,200 to replace the radiator, transmission, timing chain and thermostat. *tr
Engine coolant got into transmission. lost control of vehicle for a moment on several occasions. felt like i hit black ice. transmission was not working properly. *tr
Nissan sent a warranty notification letter that the radiator could crack and leak into the transmission. the letter stated the warranty ran out at 80k miles. they would not replace the radiator and transmission until there was an actual problem. i didn't start having problems until about 96k miles. when i brought it in to the dealer, i was told it would cost me $3000 my part to fix it and they would cover the rest. i have not been able to afford to make the repair at this time. nissan knew the part was bad and still did nothing to correct the problem. *tr
My 2007 nissan xterra started having both transmission and cooling system issues back in september 2014. after a few trips to our mechanic it was discovered that the vehicle had a cracked radiator and was allowing both coolant into the transmission and transmission fluid into the cooling the system. apparently this is a well known issue and there was a class action lawsuit against nissan, however the terms of the settlement only cover vehicles under 100k miles. by the time we found out the vehicle had just passed 100k (106k) and now nissan refused to cover it! i'm now looking at a $5k - $6k repair bill and nissan refused to budge. *tr
auto transmission not working ,seems a lt of complaints and not recall .i called nissan and was told that they are aware of the problem and the investigation going on ,but will not pay for it since it is 10521 miles over their 100k warranty .i was told to send a complaint but is been 120 days and no respond what will it take for the nhtsa to order a recall ? how many more complaints for them to start doing their job ? *tr
I have had the same problem described in your current investigation of these models. an atf line embedded in the radiator cracked, and atf fluid was allowed into the coolant, and coolant was forced into the atf. the card started slipping in gear, then it started shuddering under acceleration, then it started refusing to go into gear. i got it to a transmission shop, and when they opened it up, the guts of the transmission were rusted, and the clutches had de-laminated. the cooling system was nearly plugged up with oily transmission residue. the transmission had to be completely rebuilt, and the radiator and all associated hoses had to be replaced. all in all, a $5500 fix for a problem that shouldn't have happened. *tr
Radiator and transmission repaired after failure caused by defective radiator allowing fluids to mix between coolant and transmission. repairs were performed by dealer. radiator and transmission failed again. the way the warranty is priced, i am paying the full cost of repair. although i was able to identify the problem without risk, when the transmission fails it is catastrophic failure which could cause an accident. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle exhibited a grinding sound. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, who stated that the transmission was defective. the contact then took the vehicle to a local mechanic for a second opinion, who stated that the torque converter was defective. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the transmission was replaced. the failure mileage was 88,228.
On friday, august 2, 2013, approximately 5:40pm, the car started to have difficulty shifting (automatic), speed became erratic, slowed rapidly. i was on a service road next to a freeway during rush hour traffic in a busy area of scottsdale. i was near pinnacle nissan and decided to drive there. i had a couple very busy intersections to go through to drive the 1 mi to pinnacle. the car would not accelerate more than 10 miles an hour and was not shifting out of low gear. i was very concerned i would stall or the car would cease driving in these intersections. pinnacle nissan service diagnosed the issue (8/3/13) as a cracked radiator cooling tube that caused coolant to mix with transmission fluid ruining components in the transmission. a complete new transmission and radiator is required to fix this now. this issue is not related to abusive driving, i do very little off road and no towing, and is not a lack of or improper maintenance. this is a know design flaw by nissan. it appears there is a high number of nissan problem suv's, 2005 to 2010, that experience this same problem after roughly 80,000 miles. based on my experience, this is a potentially dangerous safety issue especially if someone would be driving at higher speeds on a busy freeway. *tr
I was driving my car and it shifted into 4 wheel drive at a red light with no prompting. the car then was immediately pulled over and turned off. the car would not start following it being turned off. it was then towed to a mechanic shop where they discovered that the radiator had leaked fluid into the transmission, causing the coolant to mix with the transmission fluid and completely disabling the car. *tt
I had noticed that the temperature gauge would bounce up and down and when i went to check the antifreeze it was full of purple goop. i was told the coolant and transmission have been compromised. i took very good care of this care with oil change, all fluid changes as well. i can't not afford to have this problem fixed. the suv has been parked since then and that was over 3 years ago. i was hoping to have a resolution of this with a recall.
In january of 2013, my car was towed to the kraft nissan in tallahassee, florida and there i learn that my computer/brain that makes my car function needed to be replace. however, i was told that my car could be at the dealership approximately 6 months or longer because the part is on back order. the part could not be found anywhere in the state of florida or in the united states. i was told by the dealership service dept that the part needed to be reproduce. i inquired if this part was a deflect issue or a national campaign for deflected car parts, and was told no. i paid approximately 1800 dollars for the repair bill. while my car was in the shop, i received a letter that explained the coolant fluid in the radiator can become contaminated with the transmission fluid and cause the transmission failure. i was having a issue with my transmission; however, after the car was repaired i requested that someone from the service dept test drive the car and indeed they drive it and stated they heard nothing. later, i requested it be driven by a mechanic; therefore we went for a drive and indeed i was told it was transmission problem, but it will cost me 7500 dollars for a new transmission because they are not honoring any letter i received according to the owners of kraft after showing the letter as proof. as of today, i was told the computer /brain was a defected part and nissan should have replaced the deflected part along with the transmission; today my car is at nissan for an oil change and still to this date i am being told that they are not aware of any national campaign for the transmission issues i am having even though they have confirmed today that the fluids are contaminated. service rep quote me a extended warrant i can purchase for 3000 dollars since my car now have 103000 miles prior to it had approx 95000. i need help with this issue. *tr
Own 2007 nissan xterra maintain care with all proper services since purchased new. suddenly driving and check engine light comes on park car and wait for morning to take to dealership, try to start next morning wont start. have car towed to cerritos nissan and have them inspect it,they call me back a few hours later telling me that my radiator hose have leaked coolant into my transmission and destroyed my tranny. i asked why this could have happened and they explained that this is a manufacture defect from nissan and explained to me since i was over 100k miles that it is not covered. price for new transmission and radiator 5000 dollars. ridiculous for me to pay for a defect from nissan that is going to eventually happen to any owner of xterra, pathfinder and frontier owners from 05 to 11. i do not think us as loyal nissan owners should have to pay for a defect from nissan that is bound to happen nissan should have atotal recall on all those models affected by the shotty radiator that they manufactured. i have purchased 4 nissans through the past 12 yrs and i will never purchase another nissan after this incident. i had to pay 5000 to fix a defect from nissan. *tr
Transmission downshifted on its own at 45 on a mild downgrade. did it again later changing from one four lane highway to another, this time around 45-50 mph. took the truck to local nissan dealer for diagnosis as i took out an extended warranty with olympicare. the service adjuster was aware that '05-'09, even '10 models have a defect that allows radiator fluid to mix with transmission fluid, creating degradation of transmission and cooling system. after-market warranty is trying to dis-allow claim, citing nissan's knowledge of this design flaw. *tr
Engine and engine cooling problem on the 2007 nissan xterra. *tr
The transmission/cooling system has a manufacturer defect and should be recalled. *jb
My 07 nissan xterra has been out of commission for 2 months now and after many phone calls and emails nissan still will not own up to their mistake. their faulty radiator design has ruined both my radiator and transmission. the service center was well aware of the problem and yet never mentioned it to me the numerous times i brought my car in to be serviced by them. it wasn't until i was 5,000 miles over the extended warranty and had an issue that it was made known that this is a common occurrence. also, they claimed that i was mailed out a notice about the issue last december of 2012, which i never received, but claim that they did what was required of them by mailing the notice out. as soon as they are at the post office it is out of their hands. for a car being only 6 years old i shouldn't have to pay half of the car's worth to fix it. i have only had this car for 2 years and it was bought for over $13,000, now my trade in is only worth $5,000. i know there is an investigation under way, but it was opened last year and there is no recent updates as to the progress. i am still waiting for a recall that may never come. *tr
Hearing whining/whirring noise from engine upon any acceleration and increased rpms. repair required is replacement of secondary timing chain and tensioners (guides). *tr
Vehicle maintained meticulously. fluids changed regularly. drove mainly highway miles in the winter. at first it began having trouble starting. then wouldn't start at all. not a click, not a crank. then took it to local shop with good reputation. had it for 7.5 weeks before it was 'fixed.' drove it for the first time in 8 weeks & transmission was thumping hard as it up-shifted & seemed not to keep up on down shift. upon initial light acceleration tranny/gears began to slip making a loud/harsh vibrating/shuttering sound & feel. took it home immediately. when i checked radiator the dreaded grey sludge poured out. nissan has horrendous customer service. i'm told i need a radiator & a new transmission. totaling over $6100! nissan needs to for once do the right thing & do a full recall. this is my second xterra. i had a 2005 as well. i also owned a 2005 maxima. that's brand loyalty but i also used to make $200,000/yr, live in my dream home, etc...thru divorce & illness i'm homeless just trying to survive. i had planned to sell the xterra & buy an inexpensive fuel efficient car so i could bank the balance & begin trying to save again. i have no vehicle now or $6100 for repairs that r obviously due to a design flaw or flaws. *tr
About two weeks ago my car would not reverse and went into neutral when i was trying to back out of a parking spot. i took my car to a nissan dealership/service center and the person knew exactly what was wrong with my car. apparently it is very common for 2005-2010 nissan vehicles to have a "faulty engine design" the service man said. the problem as it was explained to me is that the radiator fluid starts to leak into the transmission and ruins both parts. my car was bought 2 years ago for $14,000, the cost to replace the radiator and transmission is $8,000. for myself and i am sure for many, this is not an affordable amount. after researching online and reading the numerous complaints, i am surprised that no one has held nissan accountable and that no recall has been issued. i am not sure how many complaint are necessary for this to move forward. unfortunately i have a feeling that people need to die before something is done. i hope this is not the case and feel like nissan is selling lemons to their unsuspecting consumers. *tr
Was on the highway going down hill mind i ass when my 2007 nissan xterra began to down shift my its self. i can just imagine if i would have total tranny failure and caused an accident. after doing some search and asking around i was told that it may be my transmission. i then took it to a local transmission shop where they told me that my radiator would have to be replaced and there was coolant leaking into my transmission that is creating water damage. it's not the consumer's problem that they installed faulty components in their cars and trucks. there should be a recall for this item. now i'm forced to pay for a radiator and for the tranny to be rebuild plus rental car price. *tr
Transmission failure due to engine coolant from leaking coiling system. *tr
Driving at 65 mph and felt a clunk and a surge - check engine light came on and the car felt like it had been shifted into neutral. i pulled off the highway and had it towed to a repair shop. turns out that the transmission failed due to a known radiator defect that allows coolant to leak into the transmission, causing failure. nissan will not cover my car because i am beyond the specified mileage of their useless warranty extension, agreed to in a class action lawsuit. repairs and rental car will cost me about $8,000. nissan should have been forced to recall the cars for this defect and should reimburse the repair costs at 100%. *tr
I participated in the nissan campaign to replace a radiator and transmission, due to a defective assembly that caused tran failure. dealership replaced the two main parts under the campaign. i received my vehicle, and only had it for 1 1/2 days before another issue related to the radiator / cooling system was experienced. i was yet again, on the highway heading to a job and overheated, thus disabling my vehicle. i stayed the interstate for 3 hours waiting on roadside assistance to tow me back to the dealership. i'm having an issue with nissan not willing to cover what's clearly their problem to begin with. it's not the consumer's problem that they installed faulty components in their cars and trucks, that caused the major malfunctions. if i were a consumer (which i am); i would feel that they are not owning up to the full liability caused by their negligence in putting inferior parts in their vehicles that caused the malfunction in the first place. i'm not only upset at their response; let's not overlook the fact that on the two days my truck failed (first time when the tranny blew out on the highway, and the second time when i was on the highway again; and overheated); i was heading to job obligations i had for private clients of mine. i lost 1,375.65 on day one for missing my appt. on the first incident, and an additional 868.04 on the next incident. my truck's issue is that there needs to be a system flush of the radiator and the thermostat needs replacement... both are direct cause of the incident with their crappy radiator assembly they put in the vehicle in the first place. i don't have the extra money to do the maintenance, and i've lost money in the ordeal as well. i think it be "best practice" and good customer care; that nna cover the cost of the flush and the thermostat, caused from the mixture contamination of coolant and tran fluid. *tr
I am very disappointed and disgusted with the way nissan has handled this problem. my xterra 2007's transmission did not go bad until it reached over 120k miles. my wife was driving cross country with my children and all of the sudden she felt the gears slipping while driving in a major interstate. luckily she was able to drive home safe. i found out shortly after this almost catastrophic experience that there were many complaints regarding nissans transmission problems. i guess there was a class action lawsuit that only covered vehicles under 100k miles. why is nissan only providing assistance to vehicles under 100k miles if there is a there is a defect in the transmission coolant. they should cover any transmission problems regardless of what the mileage is. i took my xterra to aamco because they charge be thousands of dollars less of what a nissan dealership would have charged me. i have been a loyal nissan owner since 2003 and will never buy a vehicle from them again. in fact, i have convinced friends and families not to buy nissan vehicles because of the poor service that they have provided. *tr
The engine coolant leaked into the radiator and the transmission and radiator are ruined. i am a single mom raising 2 kids trying to save money to get it fixed. i have seen several complaints on this exact problem.
Vehicle had total failure on highway. nissan dealer says it is from transmission contamination. tcm totally failed, no power. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that a grinding noise emitted from under the hood area. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and the failure was located at the radiator cooler unit, which was determined to be fractured and causing coolant to penetrate the transmission. as a result, the transmission failed and would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 71,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while driving 68 mph the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. the contact was informed that radiator fluid had leaked into the transmission and both the transmission and the radiator would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified but stated that due to the mileage of the vehicle, they would not assist in the repair. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 113,000. ..updated 04/18/13 *bf
I do not have an incident to report-but feel someone else needs to know the potential for one. i just read the class action settlement against nissan and the outcome. i am appalled that nissan does not think that the transmission going out is not a safety issue and now find out my nissan is one of those vehicles that has coolant in the transmission. this is going to cost 2500.00 as the mileage is over 80000 now. and this is the car i entrusted my 17 year old to drive. i will have to take it off the road and decide whether or not to fix it and trade or take a huge loss and trade it at the dealer but don't want another nissan. shouldn't something be done to protect us from this? i can only hope by writing that this will help me and others in some way to force nissan to say they used a faulty radiator that leaked and could potentially cause transmission failure and in turn an accident. i will be using all tools available to get this resolved-i cannot believe that my family and i are being cheated and it looks all legal according to what i read. not sure how that happened...the consumer did not win anything but a large bill that most middle class people cannot afford. thank-you for taking an interest. *tr
Vehicle has been shuddering at around 50mph. approx 2 weeks ago, it wouldn't shift, so i couldn't drive faster than 25-30 mph. i had the oil changed and transmission flushed, and it seemed ok, although it was still doing the shuddering. yesterday i noticed a strange puddle on the garage floor, so i checked it out. there is a leak that is causing coolant to leak into the transmission. i began doing some research on the internet and found that this is apparently a fairly common problem in 2005-2010 nissans. i never received any notice of the warranty extension. when i called the local nissan dealer, the service guy knew exactly what i was talking about when i described the problem, and estimated that to repair would be $4000-5000. *tr
The radiator fluid and transmission fluid have some how mixed together cause damage to both my radiator and transmission. i purchase my xterra brand new in 2007 and kept up with the maintenance. i have read several articles and even received a letter about a class action lawsuit. but at the time no symptoms were showing on my vehicle. so upset that this is not a recall!!! i am a single mom and this was my only means of transportation. now it just sits in my yard. frustrating!!! *tr
Driving my vehicle, the transmission started to drag, i then called the dealer and brought it right in and found that the radiator was leaking into the transmission and it was going to cost 6,600 dollars to repair. i complained that it was too much money. the dealer brought it down to 2,500 dollars to fix. then i find out if it had happened before 80,000 miles it would have been covered. this is not right as nissan knew this was an issue with these vehicles because of a poor design on there part. as a consumer i feel i was taken. what would have happened if my vehicle stopped working in the middle of a highway or a deserted road. please have nissan own up to the product they are selling. *tr
While accelerating, merging onto a major highway, and without warning the vehicle lost power lunged forward and started making a loud grinding noise. i was nearly hit from behind by a vehicle having the right-of-way before i could get to the shoulder of the road. the vehicle was towed to and was diagnosed by a mechanic as having "cross contamination of transmission fluid and antifreeze due to transmission intercooler failure". this incident has been reported to and dismissed by nissan as not being a frequent problem for them. *tr
At a stop sign started to drive then stopped the vehicle jerked forward and started to vibrate more than normal. i called nissan about the bad radiator that wrecks the transmission. they told me to bring it in to be checked over. why don't they recall the radiator and not put my family at risk for a bad know part. *tr
My 2007 nissan xterra began to experience a rumble strip like affect apparently due to a defect in the radiator having a leak into the transmission and causing a transmission to begin to fail. this seems to be a common problem and should be a recall on nissans part i was forced to pay 3000 dollars for a co-pay to fix this problem and it seems this should be a recall as it is a known defect. *tr
Coolant mixes with transmission fluid and causes car to shudder and fail. this causes a situation in traffic that could cause a crash. *tr
I took my nissan to the dealership for inspection for radiator/transmission defect. the dealership indicated no way of knowing if my vehicle is one of the ones where this part will fail. is this true? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle vibrated violently. the contact also stated that when the vehicle down shifted, a loud thumping noise was heard. the vehicle was not taken to a mechanic. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 85,000. the vin was not available.
After my vehicle was making shuddering noises between 40 and 50 mph i decided to bring it to the nearest dealership to be checked. i was told the radiator leaked coolant into the transmission. i was also told this has been an issue for nissan so they would cover part of the repair and i would be responsible for $2500 of the repair since i was 1300 miles over the limit. i was notifies the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. i told the service representative i did not have the money at my disposal and asked if there was anything i could do. i was told when i get the money to call and they will repair it, but to also hurry because the transmission could lock up anytime and cause a major accident. i was shocked they would even let me leave the dealership. i immediately called nissan customer affairs and explained my situation. they told me i was they would not be able to assist me in any way and suggested the same as the dealership, to quickly get it repaired because i can cause a major accident. i was appalled they would allow their customers be in danger and endanger other drivers on the roads especially when nissan admits to this being a quality issue that a majority of their consumers are having. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where a diagnostic was performed. the failure was located at the transmission. the transmission was replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the approximate current mileage was 91,000. updated 03/01/13*lj
Last month the car seemed to start slipping gears when i got up to around 40 miles per hour. it was sporadic and once i let me foot off the gas for a second it seemed to clear and be ok. i started to see a slow leak of what i thought was oil in the garage where i parked the yesterday. when i mentioned the leak to a buddy and also told him that my heater was not working, he said we should check the coolant in the radiator. when we opened the radiator cap, there was a slimy brownish sludge all over the bottom of the cap. that afternoon, i brought the car to the mechanic across the street and he said that i had a radiator failure of some that has caused radiator fluid to get into the transmission. this is where the brown sludge has come from. he said the car needed a new radiator and the transmission had to be flushed, dropped, and serviced and it would not guarantee that the transmission needed to be replaced sometime soon after. the entire thing he quoted me as costing $3k. i called my nissan dealer where i had purchased the car from new in april 2007 and the gentleman in the service department seemed quite aware of the issue and informed me that the radiator replacement is under and extended warranty from nissan, but i would still be out of pocket for at least a $2500 co-pay for the replacement of the transmission. *tr
Xterra would not crank. towed to landers mclarty nissan. received call this morning from nissan service tech indicating that there is a radiator and transmission issue resulting in coolant mixing with the transmission fluid causing transmission failure. repair will cost $7500.00. *tr
Strong vibration and noise from the transmission and the transmission slips for time periods up to 10 seconds. happens repeatedly. upon later examination by the dealership, they say that radiator leaks coolant into the transmission causing it to be destroyed and requiring replacement. *tr
I've noticed that nissan has been under investigation for receiving a number of complaints from consumers in regards to sudden, catastrophic transmission failures in 2005-2010 nissan pathfinder, frontier and xterra's. well i am writing to tell you that my 2007 nissan xterra has fallen victim to this. it has been diagnosed with the problem of the transmission fluid cooler located in the radiator assembly that allowed coolant to mix with and contaminate the automatic transmission fluid, resulting in damaged internal transmission components and a damaged internal transmission computer. i had no warning signs leading up to or just prior to the failures. what is nissan going to do about this???? recall ?? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically stall without warning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the lines going from the radiator to the transmission were too close in proximity. as a result, the lines were breaking down and causing coolant to leak into the transmission. the contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that the vehicle could not be repaired until it was no longer operational. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 62,542.
Antifreeze leaking into transmission from faulty radiator. *tr
Vehicle became erratic on i-405 near kirkland wa. transmission behaved erratically suddenly and tenaciously, requiring an emergency pull off the freeway from middle lane. *tr
Oil cooler tube broke causing contamination to transmission fluid. radiator had already been changed at 80,000 miles. called nissan to make a claim just as soon as xterra started to shift funny. they informed me that they had extended the warranty to 80,000 miles. i asked then if they knew about this problem before, i was told yes. they also told me i had no recourse since i had 102138 miles on my vehicle. then the extension comes for 100,000 miles, and now 2138 miles over, no coverage. please, if i conducted my business like this i would not have any customers (or is that what they are looking for). i will never buy a nissan vehicle again, and i will let everyone i know that nissan knew about this and refused to help their customers. *tr
My 2007 nissan x-terra began suffering cross contamination of transmission fluid and radiator fluid around 88,000 miles. i have had to have the radiator replaced, the radiator lines flushed twice and i am still having a problem with the radiator trying to overheat due to the cross contamination. in addition to the radiator i have had transmission issues as a result of electronic module failures in the transmission. i contacted nissan about this matter and they notified me the warranty had been extended but i was still outside the warranty extension and that it would cost me close to $5,000 out of my pocket to replace the transmission and radiator. i have already spent almost half that trying to fix this vehicle and continue to have issues. nissan has a product defect and should have to stand behind this issue. *tr
