We have classified the 208 complaints from 2007 Nissan Xterra about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Coolant leaked into transmission and transmission broke down.
I bought nissan xterra with 94,000milles on it. one month later, i noticed that the radiator was filed with type of milky substance. i took it to the mecanic, he flushed the raidiator and flush the transmission, because there was a possibility of cross contaminations. the vehicule was fine for a couple of days, few days later my car completely shut down on new jersey turnpike. i struggled to put on the side, thanx god nobody was hurt. transmission gone. i had to tow it to the mecanic and i had to spent 3k to get it fix. it seens that it is a common problem and nissan should take responsability for this car
Nissan transmission fluid/radiator coolant leak issue: rough automatic transmission behavior noticed during stop and go city driving. check engine light came on. repair shop diagnosed check engine light code as transmission torque issue, pointing to transmission fluid. repair shop found leak in coolant radiator servicing the transmission fluid, resulting in water/glycol intrusion into the transmission fluid. radiator, and coolant fluid replaced, as well as transmission fluid flushed/replaced. a few days later, transmission slippage was felt and the check engine light appeared again. expecting transmission has been compromised due to prior, defective radiator.
Complete transmission failure without warning. going 70 miles per hour down interstate...during rush hr surrounded by 18 wheelers... putting my wife's life in danger.... this is obviously a safety recall issue.... thanks
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the transmission fluid leaked onto the radiator and ruined the transmission. there was no warning indicator. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,000.
My family and i was going down a big hill when the transmission went to the lowest gear on its own almost stopping us dead in its tracks 20 mph and we was on the interstate making big semi trucks locking brakes and almost hitting us running 70 plus mph. my daughter in the back,so we made it to the side of the road shut it off and we was fine agin.i took it home and transmission fluid was in the radiator , then looking on the internet thousands of nissans are hav ing the same problems but yet no recalls!!! it almost cost our lives for a company to sorry to fix their product! so what do i do im scared to drive it help asap
I was driving and the rpm excelerated without warning, the car shuttered, i had no power. prior to this happening on march 26, 2016, we did not have any warning of a problem. the check engine light came on at which time i had already pulled over. i had the suv towed to a repair shop. the repair shop advised me that the internal radiator dumped water into the transmission causing the transmission to burn up. it is not repairable. upon further investigation, we found that there is a pending case regarding this defect (dp12004) on most nissans affecting models made in 2004-2012. this states that the investigation is pending and a recalll has been requested but nissan has not issued one as yet. thank goodness i was not trying to pass or turn at the time it occurred. i was driving on a rural road and was able to safely pull over. there was no warning at all. nissan should take responsibility for what is a defect in their vehicles. we bought the car used and will try to work with the finance company on who is responsible for this defect.
When i am drivinging at a slow speed , my transmission makes a noise and then feels like it's going to die, now i have noticed that there is fluid leaking from my radiator. when i researched the issue i was having and realizised this is a recurring problem that is being reported by many nissan xterra owners and that nission has been aware of this issue since 2007 , when i originally purchased my xterra . now that i understand what the issue is , the radiator is leaking fluid in to my transmission and is destroying the transmission and radiator . in doing research on the problem i was having , and what happens when this occurs , i'm frightened to even drive my xterra at this point . considering that nissan takes no responsibility in what should clearly be a recall , i'm stuck with a car that i've just recently paid off , that i am afraid to drive and do not have $4,700 to have the radios and transmission replaced . there was no warning when this happened at all . i have always maintained my nissan and thought i had made a well informed decision in my purchase . i will never do business with this company again . i'm so disappointed in the situation nissan has put myself and apparently many , many others in . no way to do business .
Eight hours from home, the truck would not start and had to be towed. initial local garage could not diagnose the problem. chris myers nissan in daphne, al, was the closest dealer. they were called and diagnosed the problem over the phone. it is a known defect in these vehicles that allows the radiator to fail and leak radiator fluid into the transmission, destroying it and the module. this cost $5,225 to repair in addition to the tow and driving back another 8 hours to retrieve the vehicle. nissan na was completely unhelpful. despite this known defect, they refused to assist with any cost. they previously agreed to a court order to repair these issues but only under 80,000 miles. this is a known issue with these vehicles that is certain to occur in all of them. this definitely should be a recall and they are shirking their duty with this defective system. their should be no mileage limit as they know this will eventually occur with these vehicles.
I bought a 2007 nissan xterra. 2 days later my check engine light came on nissan told me i would need a new transmission it would cost me 4900 to replace. they clear the light off.they failed to tell me about the 2 recalls or the fact they were under investigation. when i called to file a complaint the lady said i would be contacted the following monday. it never happened. i called nissan they told me either to pay the 4900 or do without and i was hung up on. the following day i lost all gears in my car was almost hit by a semi with my 3 young kids in the car.my check engine light never came back on.i called nissan the told me there was nothing they could do.when i brought up about the investigation they hung up on me when i called the complaint line back they told me they would look into it and i would hear back.still nothing. nissan should be ashamed and sued and be put out of business for knowingly endangering lives and not caring
Transmission failure: while driving car began to sputter like engine or drive shaft was stuck, speed and power decreased rapidly in traffic nearly causing me to crash vehicle looking for a way to get out of driving lane. i pulled in a parking lot turned vehicle off, to inspect tires, engine and transmission fluid. checking fluids noticed transmission fluid thick like a milk shake, checked coolant, it too was the same. all this out of no where. i googled problem and found many with same issue and that car wouldnt start also due to wet electrical parts in transmission that pops a breaker not allowing restart. i check 10 amp fuse, it was broken. got car towed to near family home, began researching and find out that nissan was aware of trans cooler problem that will cause transmission failure. also, that this issue most likely happens after 100,000 miles, which i also found out nissan only covered this under an extended warranty with co-pay to that amount, which i never was notified of this issue. my car was financed with a major us bank, same emails since purchase. i went to dealer, called nissn north america and was quickly dimissed with my vehicle has to many miles and campaign is over and wont speak futher due to some lawsuit. really?? i live in illinois where its cold, what happens when you break down in the middle of no where? this should not happen to a car like this, me being the only owner and just had nissan inspect my vehicle due to engine light being on previously. this is a dangerous thing. thousands of people been affected. dealer quoted me $4900 for repairs and stated this was a common issue. they should be responsible and pay for total repairs regardless of miles. what happens while traveling at highway speed and thebtransmission stops? i'm a commercial driver, seen many accudents. this could have been fatal. recall this please, their liable.
This complaint is in reference to a 2007 nissan xterra off road 4x4 with180,900 miles. the transmission began to spontaneously downshift to low gears while moving at speeds above 25 mile per hour. at one point, the transmission seized and locked up while traveling at 45 miles per hour, which resulted in a sudden stop in the midst of the traffic flow on a two lane road. i took the vehicle to the nissan dealer for service immediately. inspection revealed coolant had leaked into the transmission via a leaking transmission cooler assembly integrated into the main engine radiator. the transmission sustained substantial internal damage from the coolant mixing with transmission fluid and circulating through the transmission. the transmission and engine radiator had to be replaced in order to make the vehicle roadworthy again. total cost of the repair with taxes was $4800.00. nissan service manager and techs at dealership indicated this is a common problem for the xterra and frontier model vehicles, yet no proactive action was taken during previous service appointments at 30,000 mile service intervals, routine maintenance appointments, and during yearly state vehicle inspections conducted at the same nissan dealership.
While traveling at highway speeds, my xterra had sudden jerking felt throughout the vehicle. the mechanics have diagnosed the problem as a failed transmission cooler which has allowed coolant to mix with my transmission fluid, causing internal damage to its internal components. prior to this failure, i have had no other issues what-so-ever with the operation of my vehicle. this damage to my transmission has cost in the thousands of dollars to repair, and all due to a faulty radiator that was installed by nissan
Transmission began failing at highway speeds. car would intermittently slow suddenly and begin shaking as if riding on a very rough road. nissan dealer informed us this was a known defect wherein the radiator fluid and the automatic transmission fluid became cross contaminated, resulting in transmission failure. although nissan knew of this issue, they did not inform us to have our car inspected for this problem. nissan currently covers this problem up to 8 years and 80,000 miles, but we are just outside this limit.
My transmission is now useless because there was a radiator leak? this isn't very safe as it could have messed up my driving!!!!
Car transmission is slipping and stop moving. transmission oil leak. radiator water leak.
The transmission stopped working while driving on the highway. i have read other complaints on this issue, so disappointed this has not been a recall. i just missed getting hit from behind due to the sudden stop.
Car began to go into neutral while on highway 500 miles from home. scared my family to death. lost power at a high speed. problem ebbed but continued all the way home. nissan stated radiator fluid had gotten into transmission due to defect in transmission line that was passing through the radiator. same nissan' dealer's cheapest solution was to put a used transmission in for $3,500 plus labor. i contracted with a private mechanic. i also purchased a separate system to route the transmission fluid correctly in the future. mechanic showed me the clutches which were destroyed. he may still have them.
While driving, without warning the vehicle cut off, losing all power including braking power, nearly causing an accident. after multiple shops inspected the vehicle it was discovered that coolant had entered the transmission through a well known failure. this failure causing coolant to enter the transmission destroyed the transmission. this failure is also documented through a class actions lawsuit as well as hundreds of similar claims found online.
Takata recall - i had went church and after i got out. i got back in the vehicle and when i tried to back up in reverse it wouldnt go, but if i pressed the gas a lil harder it went in reverse. so i got out of the vehicle and had mechanic that i go to church with look at it and he drove it around the parking lot. then checked the fluid thats when he realised that the fluid color had changed and told me that i had transmission problems.
I was driving on the interstate at 60mph when i attempted to speed up and switch lanes the truck suddenly lost power and shut off. i was almost rear ended three times lucky there was no one in the other lane so they went around i had no power steering or power brakes while trying to pay attention and not get hit i had to put the truck in neutral and try to start it back up the truck started and seemed to idle fine i put it back in drive and limped it to the side of the interstate whiteout getting hit luckily and called a tow truck and had it towed to a shop i had my wife and two small children in the truck thank god nothing happened. the shop told me that the transmission and radaitor fluid mixed causing my transmission to fail they told me that my radiator is crack and coolant mixed with the transmission fluid i didn't fix it yet i don't have the money i just paid it off and i'm trying to buy a house and now looking on line there are hundreds of cases of this and a lawsuit that was one but my truck has 150,000 miles on it all interstate mainly but i'm way out of the miles for warranty, so why isn't this a recall ? if this has happened so many times it is a safety issue i was was almost hit three times and i had to limp my truck to the side of the interstate were i could have been hit sitting still . i'm very upset over this nissan wants 5k to fix it so i guess i will start saving my money hopefully this will be a recall soon.
5 months ago the transmission fluid leaked into the radiator causing antifreeze and transmission fluid to mix now the transmission has gone out because of this caused be to be stuck on the road i now need a new transmission.
Car has a little over 100,000 miles and began to vibrate in transmission then noticed radiator was full of slimy sludge mechanic suggested we replace radiator and thermostats which we did ($478.52). ran for about a week after and just shut off one day throwing up engine codes for transmission. that's when we discovered the coolant contamination. upon calling nissan they informed me it was not going to be cheap would need to replace transmission. car has been sitting since and i still owe on it but cant afford the 3-6k dollar estimates i have received.
Radiator coolant leaked into transmission and now i need a new transmission and do not have the money for this repair. there needs to be a class action lawsuit as this is happening to nissan owners after the warranty has expired and nissan knows about this. i was driving down the main street and vehicle service light came on and then i could only go about 10-15 mph because of the transmission
Left my house garage and suddenly i notices that the car was loosing the power, so i went back to the house after few miles driving. and next morning, i was going to take my car to the mechanic, the engine didn't start. so i called to tow my car to the mechanic. according to the mechanic, car wouldn't be function due to the transmissmission and computer failure. my car is still in the shop, so i dont know the exact odometer.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while attempting to shift, the vehicle started to shake violently. after inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the radiator was leaking coolant into the transmission. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 146,000.
Transmission slipped and couldn't accelerate, my 16 year old daughter was driving, about ran over by trailer. researched and found out this is a known problem that nissan isn't taking care of.
In 2015 my fianc truck broke down leaving her stranded. she had the truck towed to the local nissan company where she purchased the suv new. they did a diagnostic check and it showed where the radiator leaked into the transmission causing it to malfunction. she was told that the repairs would be more than $6,000. we were told to contact nissan corperate. nissan rep stated there wasn't anything they could dodo to the mileage on the vehicle. there's no way you can predict how long a transmission would last. we've reached out to nissan on several occasions and were told that based on the age of the vehicle they won't pay for any repairs. my fianc travels due to her job so of course it would have high mileage.nissazn extended there warranty from 30k to 80k then 100k, again there no way you can predict a failure. nissan needs to stand behind these faulty radiators and fix these vehicles. i am a nissan owner ive had 4 nissans this leaves a bad look on nissan. i myself will not nor will i refer anyone else to buy or lease another nissan product. i'm in nc and i've refferd at least 60 of ,my friends and colleges to purchase nissan. all the staff at deacon jones know me and know my reputation. i was told by a rep at cooperate to speak with the management to see if they would discount my repair. management stated, they could only cover it if coorperate agreed to fix it. please look into this case, its been ongoing. we've reached out to coorperate several times and each time we get the run around telling us that the vehicle is over 10 years old now. we've also asked to speak to management and continue to be told there busy or someone will contact us. again no return calls. we have received emails surveys.
Radiator cracked and cooling got into my transmission. i bought the car used at a dealership in 2014. which i think dealership should have warned me about the problem too. i was driving down the highway and overdrive started shuttering and so i had to put it into 4th gear to make it on down the highway. so then i looked it up online what i could do what causes it to shutter and then i seen the notifications about the coolant in the transmission so i checked the radiator and sure enough there was white foam or sticky stuff in there. so now it's going to cost about $3,000 for a transmission and to have it put in and i still owe $4,000 on the vehicle which is now a yard ornament until i save the money up to pay for the transmission
Transmission has coolant in it due to a nissan known problem. transmission line goes into bottom of radiator develops a crank inside and leaks coolant into the transmission resulting in transmission failure.
Our 2007 xterra at 87,000 miles left my wife and 2 kids stranded on the road with a destroyed transmission due to a defect in the radiator cooling lines that support cooling the transmission. the coolant mixed with the transmission fluid and the resulting pressure caused the radiator pressure cap to blow when the engine overheated. this strawberry milkshake looking fluid leaked all over the ground and was difficult to clean-up this is a known nissan defect issue and should be a recall before someone get hurt or further environmental pollution results.
I had brought the xterra to the mechanic on may 4th for intermittent vibrations ( which i attributed to the rough roads s/p winter as it occurred at the same points on the same roads ) over 2 month and a new intermittent thumping noise heard when the vehicle was shifting gears in the last 2 weeks. nothing came up on the computer system showing any issues other than the known alert for the gas level part that shift the bed 6 months ago and i refuse to pay $400 for a $40 part that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle, ( another issue nissan is aware of as it comes up on the computer to the mechanic that this a known defect but won't replace it free of charge) end result, transmission fluid and radiator fluid were mixing due to a known issue by nissan and defective parts. there is no recall. the radiator and transmission cooler needed to be replaced costing over $1600. i have read on complaint websites regarding this known issue and i am aware this cost is much less than what other nissan owners have paid as some customers have needed to replace their transmissions or have needed to junk their vehicles as nissan refuses to take responsibility and suck up the cost to fix this significant mechanical problem on their vehicles !!!!! *tr
Water from the radiator got into the transmission and i had nissan replace transmission and radiator at the cost of 4700.00 dollars when they should have had a recall bad business.
A hesitation in the vehicle's acceleration began occurring frequently upon depressing the accelerator after a full stop at a stop sign or red light, but not at any other time in driving the vehicle. the problem was first noted when departing the dealership after which a new timing chain had been replaced. when reviewed by the dealership upon return to the service area (another appointment had been made at later time), a loss of over one quart of transmission fluid was detected (over what time period was unclear), but no known source of external leakage was found. this led to the conclusion that internal leakage was very likely occurring. due to the many instances of radiator cracks and toxic mixing of fluids among similar year models (mid-2000 model years of nissan xterra), the dealership recommended that the radiator be replaced and the transmission thoroughly flushed, which might prevent the transmission from requiring a complete overhaul in the future - although there are no guarantees. this work was completed for a total of $1500 including discount; the incident occurred well after the extended warranty provided by the manufacturer for resolving issues that had been experienced by others, hence the dealership's charges. a request was nonetheless made to get reimbursed by the manufacturer (nissan), currently under review. it is possible that this issue was dealt with at a very early stage and might therefore result in a lower probability of transmission problems in the future, which could cost several thousand dollars ($6-7,000 or more). other drivers/owners have typically experienced more severe issues, such as shaking/stalling vehicles and/or illuminated dashboard lights indicating engine problems.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. the contact stated that there was transmission failure and there was a component that fractured without warning, associated with fluid leaking from the radiator into the transmission. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the transmission and the radiator needed to be replaced due to a crack in the atf line that flows through the engine coolant chamber into the radiator. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: dp12004 (power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available. updated 8/10/15*cn
Exiting parking lot, vehicle experienced sudden, "accute" out of control - acceleration. immediately depressed brake pedal, yet xterra continued forward some 40 - 50 feet unimpeded, in a severe bucking fashion. fortunately no person, nor object was in my path. contacted nissan north america, was directed to take suv to local dealer (vallejo nissan) for inspection. computer analysis displayed no mechanical issues. there are without a doubt, critical flaws, just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting public. nissan has staunchly refused any further evaluation.your assistance would be appreciated. thanks so much.
Vehicle abruptly stalled without warning when making a left hand turn. oncoming traffic was forced to stop. a serious, possibly deadly, accident could have occurred if the oncoming traffic had not stopped. the vehicle had shuddering during acceleration prior to this incident but had never given any indication it would stall unexpectedly. the vehicle had been maintained by nissan and no issues were brought to my attention during this service. when nissan diagnosed the vehicle they found that the transmission cooler had leaked and allowed transmission fluid and engine coolant to mix. this lead to transmission damage and unsafe, unexpected failure of the transmission. nissan also said they had known about this common failure for many years. i was never informed of this dangerous design flaw. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle hesitated when the accelerator pedal was depressed and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 127,000.
We just discovered our 2007 nissan xterra (117,000 miles) is one of the many nissans to have the radiator crack and leak coolant into the transmission and transmission fluid into the cooling system. the car now needs around $6,000 in repairs to fix the transmission, radiator, etc. we bought a warranty from the dealer when we bought the car in 2010. the warranty covers the transmission up to 120,000 miles. we have taken the car to the dealership for the last five years for regular service and was never informed about this design defect. the dealer will not fix the transmission as covered in the warranty. *tr
My car began shuttering bad enough that i was afraid that it was going to stall or that i would get into an accident. thankfully, i didn't i found out that a faulty radiator leaked into the transmission. apparently, this is a well known problem. i am being told by nissan that it will cost $7,000 to repair/replace the radiator, hoses, transmission etc. my mileage is just over 106,000 miles so, like everyone else, i will get no help from nissan in making these repairs. i can't afford to fix it at this time so it will have to sit and wait while i will pray that there is a recall soon. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra. while driving at 45 mph, there was a grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle. in addition, the contact felt a vibration in the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there was a cross contamination of coolant between the engine and the transmission. the mechanic diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000.
On 3/28/15, parking my 2007 nissan xterra (126,0000 miles) in tampa, fl. before i had the car in "park", there was a loud noise, the engine started smoking and a lot of purple/green/gray fluid leaked out from the bottom of my car. afraid to move the car, aaa towed it to the nissan dealership in tampa. when the tow truck driver arrived and saw the color of the fluids, he quickly determined that my car had leaked both transmission and radiator fluid. he said he heard that this was a problem with nissan xterras. i was shocked! since purchasing new in december 2006, i have always taken my car to nissan for all service. other than a few oil changes, all service has been performed by nissan dealerships and their certified technicians. just prior to this incident, my car had been shaking. i had been to nissan with this complaint in the past, but after repairs were made it seemed to go away. at no time was a transmission problem mentioned as a possibility. i have lived in different areas in florida and used only nissan dealerships for service and repair, willing to pay more for repairs than an independent repair shops, that nissan dealerships and service would know my vehicle best & be proactive, alerting to any potential future problems, i felt protected. the last major repair was in july 2014, at 113,000 miles at autonation nissan, delray, fl. complaint was severe shaking, and stumbling when accelerating. repairs were over $1,000; a transmission issue was never mentioned, even after further repairs were needed. i was never informed of transmission problems with xterras until saturday at the dealer in tampa, who said he alerts all xterra owners to be proactive with radiator replacement. after the comment i did research online. i was unaware of the class action suit settled with nissan; i was never notified of a problem history with nissan xterra transmissions and radiators. *tr
Transmission cooler ruptured, ruined the cooling system. appears to have damaged the transmission *tr
Transmission control unit fried by defected radiator failure. i am now one of the many 2007 xterra owners taken by the nissan motor corporation who put out a defective product and now refuse to stand behind it. me and the wife were stopping to get a bite to eat, ended up being a final stop. after picking up the food the truck would not crank, gauges worked, horn and lights but still would not crank. had it towed to the house and then contacted the dealership. then it gets worst, the dealership "technician" replied with the exact same description of problem over the phone that i gave to him when i called to have it towed to the dealer. the symptoms are no crank, milky looking radiator fluid and the automatic transmission fuses keeps blowing. now i contacted the nissan motor corporation and got no "joy" when i found out that the were offering a big fat nothing!!!!!! i guess this is what you get for buying a nissan :( *tr
I was driving my xterra on the freeway at 5:30 am and suddenly my car quit accelerating, it was as if it went into neutral. i had to immediately pull over onto the side of the highway so that i wouldn't get hit from behind. i turned the engine off and back on and the car got me to my destination. i have since found out that this dangerous issue is common in xterra's and i am very disappointed that nissan has not made this issue known to owners. it may well cause a bad accident. additionally, it is a very costly repair for which nissan takes little to no responsibility though the defect is theirs. *tr
Contamination of the transmission with anti freeze due to leak in cooling system, resulting in transmission failure. *tr
According to garage, same complaint with other second generation nissan xterra owners. radiator fluid mixed with transmission fluid and caused catastrophic failure. driving downtown in heavy traffic with my 8 month old daughter and her mother in the car and losing power completely at an intersection due to a known problem was unnerving to say the least. *tr
Vehicle vibrates at 40 mph- making it unsafe - turns out it's transmission issue.. was informed this is not a new issue after reading online ..... nissan has never recalled these vehicles and instead was sued due to this transmission issue many other nissans have had...i was never informed regarding such an issue. this is unsafe due to the shaking shudder this problem causes especially in a high traffic area and it isn't fsir that the customer stays stuck with a faulty vehicle ... this issue should be fixed at any mileage since it is nissans faulty design at fault! shame on you nissan. *tr
Transmission and radiator defect-internal leakage between the 2 engine parts -nissan did not notify me, the original owner, of the defect or of the successful lawsuit against them for this problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 nissan xterra, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who informed that the transmission needed to be repaired but the specifics were not available. the contact referenced nhtsa action number: dp12004 (power train). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 134,000.
