Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2005 Nissan Titan

I noticed a knock when i was taking hard left turns. tried driving it to work a few days later and on my way in to work (another left turn) i heard a loud pop almost like i hit a pot hole or something, but there was nothing on the road. that night on my way home(approx. 1 mile) took my final left turn - loud cracking noise and tires squealed-also slipped out of gear completely for a few seconds. mechanic said the spyder gears in the rear diff. have lost their teeth. nissan will only sell the whole diff. which costs $2000 plus tax and labor. not cool. there were no accidents or property damage only because i was in my condos driveway and there were no cars in the parking lot. *tr

2005 nissan titan se 4x4 offroad pkg, rear differential failure. estimated $3500-$4000 for new rear end. was told by parts department that none where in country and has been on back order for weeks and won't expect it for some time. *tr

There are no events leading up to the failure. the rear differential went out on my 2005 nissan titan, in order to repair the part, i had to buy an "entire" new rear differential (because this of course happened out of warranty). i was told the part that needed to be repaired is actually a very small part of the differential, but i had to pay $4000 to get the entire thing replaced. i would like to state that i am very very glad that this did not happen while i was driving on the freeway. i was only doing about 15 mph when it went, and it felt like i got hit by a mack truck!!!!! i have been searching the internet to see how often this is happening and it seems to be happening alot! someone should check into this before someone gets seriously injured or killed! *tr

The rear end was replaced under warranty in my 2005 titan at 55k miles no charge due to oval shaped axle tubes causing axle seal failure. here i am again 2012 with 115k miles out of warranty but only 60k miles on the rear end that was replaced under warranty and have the same issue blown axle seals due to out of round axle tubes. if you do not recognize this all the axle oil can leak out causing sudden rear differential failure which may lead to a crash or loss of life. nissan was contacted about this issue after the seals where replaced in the second rear end and the seals continue to leak after replacement. nissan refused to do anything about the issue and stated "your truck is out of warranty" imo there should have been a recall on the axles leaking along with the cracked exhaust manifolds that were numerous reported also. visit the nissan forums and you can view 44 pages of differential issues on titan talk.com. nissan should be held accountable... *tr

1. 2005 nissan titan. 2. rear end differential leak 3. have taken to auto repair but no repairs have been done at this point. too expensive. *tr

The rear differential on our 2005 titan le self-destructed last week at 98,000 miles. *tr

Was hearing the rear end humming for a little while when on may 6, 2009 my 2005 nissan titan's rear differential gave out in the middle of making a left hand turn in a busy intersection. got very close to getting hit on drivers side, drivers had to maneuver around me going at least 50 mph. it kicked back in and was able to pull off the road. continued to lock up on me afterwards, it is now in shop getting the rear differential replaced. *tr

Nissan titan 2005 se 4x4 with tow package 49,000 miles. rear end broke taking off from stop sign. dealer is having a hard time getting a replacement. it has been at the dealer since the 5th. talked to nissan customer service and they don't want to help me. truck is still under warranty. *tr

Drive shaft ripped out of the rear differential. a small ever increasing noise coming from the rear of the truck when coasting. from the very start of the noise to complete failure was about 40-miles, but the noise was only loud enough to hear with the windows shut and radio off about 10-miles before complete failure. truck is now at the dealership, chances are good new drive shaft and entire rear differential will be needed. it is entirely possible this failure could have caused a major accident. had the driveshaft not ripped free from the differential, the rear wheels could have locked up, causing the truck to skid out of control. *tr

I have a nissan titan kingcab 4x4 with 36,000 miles. it started making noises when i would turn a corner in town, this kept getting worse, and then started sounding like gears were "jumping" teeth, and the pickup would jerk when this happened. three days latter it became extremely severe and would make a loud noise from the rearend, and jerk even with starting slowly from a start. i took it to the nissan dealer as it was still under warranty, and they told me that the rearend was bad and needed replaced. i was also told by the nissan dealer that 60 other nissan dealers in the us were waiting for rearends to fix this problem also. my pickup has been in the shop for 3 weeks and the dealer can't tell me when they will have a rearend to fix it. *tr

Rt rear axle seal leak, 65k. safety hazard, fluid leaking on hot surface. *tr

Rear differential binds up when cornering and sometime on straight aways. *tr

Rear axle seal leak, had to replaced seal and rear brakes. *tr

2005 nissan titan 66,000 miles (90% highway). problem began 03/27/09 while making right hand turn truck began slipping and bucking on the left rear came close to accident, drove to nissan dealer and was told by a mechanic that there have been multiple issues with the rear end differentials. after looking at the truck the whole rear end needs to be replaced (4500.00) and the front end is leaking (350.00). i have never towed anything nor been off road. this is unacceptable for any vehicle especially when you see all of the complaints. this should be a re-call. *tr

Rear axle seal failed releasing fluid on the rear brake rotor and diminishing braking ability. *tr

While commuting in my nissan titan, the ride became very jerky and there were loud metal on metal sounds. the vehicle also seemed to have trouble switching gears. upon taking it to a nissan service center, the technicians concluded the rear differential failed and will need to be replaced. *tr

Rear differential failed while backing out of my driveway with loud banging and violent jerks. *tr

Occasionally i would hear a bang accompanied by a vibration while making turns. the intervals between the events began to decrease and would occur every time i made a turn. on two occasions the rear wheels unexpectedly locked up causing skidding. the vehicle was brought to a nissan dealer and the rear axle housing and differential assembly were replaced under the 5yr. / 60000mi powertrain warranty. *tr

..rear axle seal leaking for a second time in about (30,000 miles first time, now 67,000 miles and leaking again) ..exhaust manifold cracked (has catalytic converter attached) ..4 trips to dealer to repair leak on front differential (30,000 miles) .. half shaft came out while driving. (34,000 miles) truck has 67,000 miles. nissan does not seem to care since it is out side of the warranty despite the well known issues??? *tr

Transmission cooler line leaks due to poor factory clamps. this has been reported on many other fellow titan owners. i had to pay the dealership to fix this since the truck is not out of warranty. *tr

I own a 2005 nissan titan. the rear differential began to make strange noises so i took it to the nissan dealership. the service tech told me it would have to be replaced at a cost of $2500. the truck had 61,500 miles on it. the dealership said the warranty was only 60,000 miles and refused to replace the part at no cost. i have called nissan customer service and they refused also. the vehicle i purchased had a towing package installed. in my opinion, the lightweight rear axle and differential that nissan installed on these vehicles is inadequate and therefore defective. nissan should replace these parts at no cost to the consumer. *tr

Front drive shaft on my 2005 nissan titan se king cab "binded" up according to nissan dealership, thus creating vibration in the front of the truck and thereby destroying the oil seal and corresponding bearings in the four wheel drive transfer case. all told, my truck sits in a repair shop needing new front hubs (r and l), a new front drive shaft, and a new transfer case. the cost of the repair is substantial, around four thousand dollars. i am not sure if my third party extended warranty will cover the damages or not. i am awaiting word from the warranty company to discover what indeed they will cover before i have the truck repaired. *tr

Power train:axle assembly:axle shaft:seal. *tr

Rear end failed, truck would not drive, dealer replaced entire read end on truck. *tr

Rear differential broke. *tr

Rear differential failure. *tr

Just heard from my nissan dealer, they said my rear axle seals are leaking. i read this could cause braking issues. this truck has 61,000 miles and the nissan titan's have been know to have faulty rear axle seals. dealer wants me to replace, but seem where it is a safety concern that it shouldn't be my responsibility to replace especially at 61,000 miles. this should be a long term wear item. *tr

2005 nissan titan rear axle seals and differential failure. the rear differential failed on my nissan titan about 7 months ago. now i'm having problems with the rear axle seals leaking. according to the local dealers this seams to be a common problem with all nissan titans from 2004-2007 with the seals and differentials breaking down. *tr

The vehicle is a 2005 nissan titan se king cab 4x4 pickup truck with approx. 60k miles. while driving on the road in two wheel drive under normal conditions the c-clip that retains the front drivers side axle within the front differential failed allowing the axle to separate from the front differential, disabling the capability of the engaging four wheel drive, and damaging the external splines on the axle shaft, as well as the internal engaging splines in the front differential. the parts have not been replaced due to the truck being out of the 60k mile power train warranty by the time i arrived at the dealership. parts and labor estimated at ~$3400. *tr

Right real axle seal leaking. leak was large enough to contaminate parking brake assembly, rendering it useless. should be covered by my extended warranty. no sign of leak 15k miles ago during 60k service. *tr

Just regular driving, the rear wheel seals leak and seems to also have a problem with the rear differential vent. dealership said more than likely i will need a whole new rearend. *tr

I wish i would have check this website before buying the 05 titan. went in for oil change and tech. informed me of leaky seals training and play in u joint need to be replaced under warranty thank god, but after reading all of the complaints on this website i don't think i'd would have bought this truck. *tr

Front driver side axle pulled out and destroyed the front differential. *tr

2005 nissan titan 4x4 front axle failure. the four wheel drive is inoperable ar a result of a known design flaw in this vehicle. *tr

Drivers side front differential axel fell out. this could have caused a loss of control of the vehicle. which could of resulted in damage to the vehicle along with passengers. c clip broke has not been corrected yet. *tr

Rear axle seal is leaking so bad the rear brakes are saturated. *tr

Rear axle seals 2005 nissan titan prematurely leak because axle not vented properly. leaking oil tends to cover brakes. possible hazard from brake failure. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan titan le with 61,400 miles and today during my light every day driving, my rear differential let go. *tr

The rear axle seals have had a significant leak. the vehicle only has 26,000 miles. this leak has caused the rear differential fluid to leak onto the rear brakes causing reduced braking ability. *tr

At 66,000 miles the rear end spider gears disintegrated causing extensive damage to the pinion gears as well. nissan does not provide parts for this- but require the customer to purchase the entire rear end which costs $2800.00. i am 6000 miles outside the warranty but they will not consider any type of compensation for a known defect in the gear material and poor quality. my nissan service writer submitted a request and was denied by nissan. *tr

Rear end made clicking sound / 63000 miles /reported hearing a sound at 20000 i took it to the dealer for brake recall and mentioned the drivetrain service writer did write it down on ticket and said it check out ok. *tr

Comment on rear-end failure: rear differential failed leaving a gas station at 10 mph with no trailer disabling driver from having proper control of vehicle with intermittent drive/power-train capabilities and distracting popping/grinding sounds of failed components in rear differential. upon removing rear differential internal gears found both spider gears had numerous teeth broken off while all other internal gears looked "normal". nissan1 (case/file#6346683) and my local dealer/service manager offered no warranty replacement help after it was requested. repair from nissan was quoted at $3,604.67 for complete axle assembly replacement and only offers a 12,000 mile x 12 month warranty! vehicle had 69,960 miles at time of defect/malfunction. rear differential upgraded to a detroit truetrac (limited slip differential) at owners expense but to lack of confidence in the nissan rear axle assembly/components and reported failure cases with minimum nissan cooperation! this is a known defect that nissan should be responsible for on all titans. please help! *tr

Nissan failed to replace a transmission under the 60k powertrain warranty. the truck is currently at 56k miles, and has been out of use since november 11th. the vehicle falls under the north carolina lemon law: as with other lemon laws, it is required that automobile manufacturers repurchase or replace a vehicle that has not been properly repaired within a "reasonable number of attempts". in north carolina, this reasonable number is four attempts or if the car has been out of service waiting repair for a cumulative total of 20 or more business days during any 12-month period of the warranty. it has been out since november 11th, and they still want me to pay for the cost of the transmission when they should cover it no questions asked. *tr

2005 nissan titan rear end gears went out. i have to replace the ring and pinion gears along with the spider gear set up. basically rebuild the entire rearend. i have read several people complained about the issue to this website. this is a major defect. i was driving at 45 mph when it happened. the rearend locked up and i slid off the road. luckily no one was behind me when i slid off the road or there would have been an accident. *tr

Rear differential failure after highway driving almost caused an accident at an exit due to unexpected lunge of vehicle after coming to a stop and continuing. nissan claimed this was common when i took it in for repairs. the rear differential was replaced with the same type as before. *tr

While accelerating out of a turn, i heard a number of loud clunks and felt truck kick. towed to dealership and was told that the differential had failed. conveniently, this was at 66k miles, just 6 out of warranty. i was quoted nearly 4k to repair, because nissan does not sell the parts to rebuild, just the whole assembly, tire to tire. *tr

I recently purchased this vehicle used and when i looked under it, i saw fluid leaking down from the axle area onto the brake heat shield. i brought it in to the dealership and they said it was a leak in the rear right axle seal. since the vehicle had 40,000 miles on it, it was replaced under the 60,000 mile warranty. *tr

Normal driving, nissan titan rear left axel seal has now failed and is leaking excessive grease/fluid out on brakes and wheel. *tr

Basically i was slowing down to make a turn into the post office when i heard a loud, clanking-type of noise. i knew right away something was happening with the rear-end of my 05 titan 4x4, and before i could stop it made the horrific noise about 4 more times. i fully expected to look into my rear view mirror and see parts and fluid all over the highway, but fortunately nothing like that happened. i parked the truck and a mechanic, who informed me about this site and the problems nissan was having with rear-ends. *tr

At just over 60,000 miles, the rear differential failed!!! i have never hauled anything over 1100 lbs. i 'd purchased the truck new in 2005 and also have the tow package. i don't drive off road. my warranty was up @ 36,000 miles. the rear differential failed and the rpms went into the "red" when i had pulled away from a stop sign. i was going only 15mph. then the truck free spun and grabbed at a higher rpm damaging the rear differential. as i drove down the street, knocking sounds occurred. the truck will be towed on monday to a mechanic to be repaired. this should not have happened and i could have been in a major wreck if there had not have been a shoulder to coast onto! *tr
