Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 Nissan Quest

The speedometer quit working and the odometer does not work right

The spedometer and the lights for it don't work got pulled over and told i had a fake inspection because of them not working can't get an exact reading on my mileage, fuel or if the vans over heating i can't tell how fast or slow i'm going

Takata recall the speedometer goes in and out all the lights in the van is not working and light blink on and off and the overdrive stays on all the time

At various speeds the car will die and lights flash and i have to pull over and try and start the car. it will restart but this happens intermittently and at various times and speeds. they told us this happens on a lot of these models and it is the ecm.

The vehicle main computer is directly under the driver windshield. it rusted out and failed. because it was totally unprotected and subject to rain, snow excessive heat, i had to have it replaced to the cost of $1,000. completely preventable. i demand a refund and a recall notice issued. thank you!

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. the contact stated the sliding door latches failed to function properly for the rear doors on both sides. the contact had to check the doors to ensure that they were secured and when the failure happened, the contact had to manually close the two electric doors with force. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 04v186000 (latches/locks/linkages) and nhtsa action number: pe04027 (structure, latches/locks/linkages) but the contact had experienced the failure concerning the recalls. two dealers had been notified (busam nissan,1501 e kemper rd, cincinnati, oh 45246,(513) 771-8100 and jeff wyler nissan of cincinnati, 8680 colerain ave, cincinnati, oh 45251, (513) 385-1400). the contact was to check with the manufacturer to determine a remedy to repair the vehicle. the contact was uncertain if the manufacturer may provide a solution being excluded from the recall. the failure mileage was not available.

My instrument panel no longer works at all. i can not tell how much gas i have, read my (which affects my ability to get an oil change anywhere) , and my temperature gauge. i have ran out of gas in negative temps with kids in the car. i have attempted to buy a new instrument panel, the cost is over $300. once i finally saved the money i was told by nissan that the part was discontinued! i have researched this issue and discovered i am only one of hundreds with same issue!

Car fire. our minivan was parked, the engine shutoff and the keys were removed from the ignition. the car sat for three hours in very cold weather in a residential neighborhood. based on the videos, it appears the electrical system started sparking and set the engine area on fire. eventually the cab was on fire and the entire minivan was burned and completely lost. it took 7 minutes for the fire department to arrive and an additional 11 minutes for the firemen to extinguish the raging fire. all this was caught on a neighbor's security camera. the video files are over 5 mb so this website will not allow me to upload the video files. i should also mention we drove the van earlier in the day without problems.

The gauges for the current mileage, fuel, temperature are all going in and out. this issue makes it almost impossible to know how much fuel is in the car, so i just keep putting in $15-$20 every couple of days to keep it full (where the amount is able to be seen). i make sure there is antifreeze in the radiator and the reserve bottle as well. keep the oil changed regularly also.

Nissan quest cluster loses ability to moniter fuel and temperature , which caused me to run out of fuel while travelling at a speed of 55mph. after researching online i see there is a repair but how does the dealer not see an issue with this problem. the lcd screen essentially peel away from the screen due to heat or humidity . i see this as a danger and i feel it puts my family along with others in danger .

Alarm beeps when set but does not sound if car is broken into. car was parked. power sliding door does not always shut when power button is pushed. does not always lock and latch as well. door flew open while driving on the freeway. also when closing does not stop if someone is in the way. caught my four yr old daughter's leg and shut on it. tire pressure light constantly comes on even when tires are completely aired up. back rear door does not always open whether button inside van or remote key is pushed. has to forcefully be opened and shut. sometimes will slam shut and it has fallen on my back before. many electrical functions within the dash and console do not always work or register. does not register for oil, coolant, or temp. *tr

2004 nissan quest. consumer writes in regards to ecm corrosion problems. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle stalled and it would not re-start. the dealer informed the consumer the intelligent power distribution module would also need to be replaced in order for the vehicle to run. *jb

Odometer , gas gauge. temperature gauge, stopped working, on the left side of dash making the vehicle not be able to pass inspection. *tr

My battery keeps going dead if the van sits more then a day. i took it to a local mechanic but he could not find the problem. when i picked up my van the left side of the dash does not work. i looked up complaints on the computer and they are the same as mine. the ecm has rusted because of the placement in the van 2004 through 2009 are in the same place. i called nissan but the said they had no idea what i was talking about that i could not believe every thing i read on the internet. this is bad because now i can not get my van inspected because the dash does not work. i need my van to go to work. it cuts off for no reason. i cannot tell how much gas i have. i can tell how many miles i have that was the second thing that went. the first was the radio. they told me at nissan that i had to take it to a nissan mechanic but i can not afford $110.00 an hour. this should be a recall because all 2004 to 2009 van are made this way and are have electrical problems. please help. *tr

Drove it to a park about 1:00 p.m. stayed there til about 3:00 pm got home parked in front of house on street. went in back yard for a bbq about 20 to 30 minutes later noticed it started to smoke under hood toward the rear of engine compartment on passenger side about where pass. feet would be or behind glove box. within 5 minutes we had flames and by the time the fire dept got here it was a total loss. *tr

My van indicated a problem with a mil on the dash. after getting it tested the code indicated an issue with a vent valve p0447. i replaced the suggested part and it did not fix the problem. after researching the issue, i focused my attention on the ecm as it controls all the sensors in the vehicle. i removed the ecm and noticed rust and corrosion right away. nissan does not consider it be a defect, however the ecm is mounted under the leaf screen where water is supposed to drain. upon removing the cover to the ecm it was discovered that the corrosion from the water ate away at the metal and created a hole in the sealed ecm and allowed water to get and cause damage to the circuit board. my problem was only 1 sensor, but it won't pass required emission in my state. there were some reports of drivability issues by others that had the dealer tell them they need the ecm replaced and it was not covered under warranty. this is a design flaw and should be replaced by the manufacturer. *tr

On november 27, 2013, while parked outside of my home, my 2004 nissan quest burst into flames. the car within seconds was completely engulfed in flames, and there was nothing anyone could do but get as far away from it as possible and hope there would be no injuries or fatalities. the car is totaled, and i need answers as to how a car that is parked all of a sudden bursts into flames. i believe that this needs to be investigated. my 2004 nissan quest cut off on me at a stop sign on october 31, 2013. when i got out of the car i could smell antifreeze. i had it towed to cowls nissan that evening. when i got to cowls nissan they were about to close, but i was able to rent a car from them while mine would be getting looked at and hopefully fixed the next day. the next day a representative from cowls nissan called me and told me that the rear coolant pump needed fixing and that'?s why the car cut off and wouldn'?t start. they replaced the pump and refilled it with antifreeze. i had my windshield wipers fixed because they said as they did a courtesy multipoint inspection the wipers weren'?t working because of a wiper link issue. when i went to pick up the car i noticed on the receipt that there was an oil leak issue and air filter issue that was discovered in the multipoint inspection. they also noted that my timing chain was noisy at startup and that it would need to be diagnosed further to get to the root of the problem. at no time was i told that the car wasn't safe to drive. on november 10, 2013 i noticed that there was a humming sound coming from the car, off and on, and then the passenger side headlight went out. i took the car in to fix the headlight on 11/22/2013, but i wasn't hearing the humming sound then. i started hearing the humming sound again close to thanksgiving (11/26/2013) and planned to take the car back in after the holiday. *tr

Vehicle lost speed dramatically on the road. car would not drive more than 10 mph, no increase in rpms with accelerator depressed. mechanic reports ecm failed while driving due to rust development. ecm is placed in unprotected location directly under windshield drain. nissan offers no fix. *tr

The last digit on the odometer reading on the car is not readable. i've seen several cars with this problem. i called nissan and they opened a case. the case number is [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The last number on the odometer reading is not readable. i have seen several cars with this same problem. i called nissan and they opened a case. the case number is [xxx]. a nissan dealer in pennsylvania called me and told me it can not be fixed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. while driving approximately 10 mph, the contact the slip, abs, and tcs warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel as the vehicle suddenly stalled. the failure recurred four times while traveling at various speeds. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. while parked, the contact noticed that the instrument panel gauges were not providing any accurate readings. the contact stated the vehicle had been parked for two days during a hurricane prior to the failure. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 66,100.

A family trip from st augustine heading southbound on i-95 towards w.palm beach 75 miles into journey the vehicle shuts down with no warning signs. had this van towed to nearest repair shop 25 miles and had the throttle body replace. there was no check engine light on prior to this repair. parts that was defective was the throttle body, ignition coil and was told by repair shop a possible defective fuel injector. *tr

See link http://questdriver.com/node/546my ecm went out on the highway, leaving my wife and a van load of kids stranded. my warranty had run out and the mechanic i brought it to told me it was rusted out and caused a fire in the ecm. the frame has a design flaw that allows snow and water to sit in the mount that holds it causing it to rust out.( the replacement has holes in it so this doesn't happen again showing that it should have been recalled! i am having the same trouble as everyone else, i get a run around from nissan that i have to take it to their dealership pay $1500 repair bill and if there is a recall i might get paid back! i don't have $1500 to blow i have a family that needs a reliable van! *tr

The gas gauge is displaying inaccurate info. even if i fill it to the top, it still displays either empty or half full. this is a safety issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. the contact was standing outside of the passenger side automated sliding door placing a child seat in the vehicle when her child depressed the close door button. the automated sliding door closed without detecting the contact was in the path of the door. the contact sustained scratches and bruises to her left leg. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics and was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle began to lose power as smoke was seen coming from under the hood. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they diagnosed that the electrical system was completely burned. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 90,000.

Warning lights "slip", "tcs off" and "service engine soon" would intermittently remain on well past ignition -- usually after the engine had struggled to start. dashboard "tcs on" switch did nothing to remedy this. sometimes, even when the van was being driven at 25 to 55mph, these lights would suddenly pop on and the engine would stall out, depriving me of most of my steering and braking capabilities with traffic right behind me. in my area, the main highway is heavily traveled, full of curves and often narrows to 2 lanes with very limited shoulders. the engine dying unexpectedly on this road is a safety hazard not only to everyone in my vehicle but to oncoming traffic as well. i am frequently followed by fully-loaded logging trucks and semis, whose drivers would find it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to avoid hitting me, especially if i were in a spot where i could not coast all the way off the road. after reading numerous online complaints of others having the same engine problem, i wrote to nissan reporting the danger, suggesting a recall. (file #7197243) they refused to cover repair because my warranty had expired. told me to take my quest to a dealership, who wanted $104 just to hook up their diagnostic equipment, plus the actual repair costs. the problem -- a faulty camshaft sensor -- was subsequently fixed by a local shop. the mechanic there told me that the mechanics' "crystal ball" hotline was reporting frequent failures of this component -- in addition to a tsb nissan put out on the problem. (so, they are aware!) given the importance of this sensor for safe operation of their engines, shouldn't the company address the high failure rate of the ones installed in their vehicles, regardless of mileage? i hope you will look into this before lives are lost as a result of nissan's refusal to acknowledge and deal with this safety issue. *tr

My 2004 nissan quest began shutting down while driving, even at significant highway speeds, requiring the vehicle to be pulled over and restarted. vehicle has 69,923 miles at the time it was diagnosed with a corroded engine control module that needed to be replaced. i now understand this is a common problem that seems to be more of a design flaw than an "environmental factor" as nissan calls it. this vehicle has been well maintained. i did not expect a $1,500.00 repair bill nor did i expect such a compromise to my families safety while driving on the highway. it just shuts down without warning, no power, no ability to control the vehicle!!! i was lucky. *tr

The car had been exhibitng various light warnings. the car was checked and the light indicators were not correct. no problems were evident. i parked the car in front of my home. two hours after paring the car it began to smoke. the fire department was called and the fire was put out. the harness burned due to an electrical malfunction that is not considered wear and tear. it is due to a design or manufacture that put me and my property in potential harms way. this report is filed in an effort to protect other nissan owners and to alert the company of a design flaw,

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan quest. the contact stated that the led lights on the instrument cluster malfunctioned and none of the readings could be seen. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer to have the instrument cluster replaced. the dealer stated that while attempting to replace the instrument cluster, the mileage could not be retrieved to transfer into the new cluster. the dealer stated in order to know the true accumulated mileage of the vehicle, the instrument cluster could not be changed. the failure mileage was 65,000.

I owned a nissan quest 2004 3.5 sl that has 66,556 miles, i was very happy with this car until last september, when out of the blue my nissan will brake down in the middle of the beltway or stall if i stopped at a red light or stop sign, the engine will die completely with no warning signs, i took this car to the dealer passport nissan of alexandria va for the 3rd time yesterday because my van keep stalling any time i drive under 5mph or brake to a stop. this after i was told for 2nd time that they fixed the problem in a message they left me saying 'we were able to duplicate the problem and fixed, we had to re-program the engine idle, that is fixed we drove it many times today and definitely is fixed'. but when i drove it back the next morning taking my kids to school my nissan kept stalling and got worse because now the accelerator is shaking the car whenever i need to speed up. frustrated again i called the technician to let him know what happened and he told me this'there is nothing else we can do, we can't fix the problem, and my advise to you is to buy another car!!' i also got a note from the same technician saying this 'no dtc's, we are unable to duploc customer's stalling issue. recommend trying another nissan dealer for 2nd opinion'. my husband asked them, why in less than 24hrs their message had changed from fixed to this? they have no answers to this questions and since is not safe to drive i left my van parked at the dealer passport nissan of alexandria va. *tr

We were northbound in motion just leaving a light controlled intersection, on a green, when struck extremely hard on driver side. we were in motion and other person attempted to come from westside exiting a bakery, mid street, to make left turn and head same direction as us (northbound) but failed. other driver said two vehicles stopped and waived her out. she sped across two southbound lanes, did not stop in the turning merging lane, kept going straight across those 3 lanes, her front end struck driver side door traveling down the right side of our minivan, crushed middle door the hardest ,to driver side rear wheel well. we never saw her. damages totaled $4,784.39. vehicle towed to cerritos nissan body shop, from lake elsinore. impact severe instrument panel showed warning the side door open. the problem is, repairs completed on 9/28/11, we go to pick up vehicle, when we are about to leave, we see the odometer indicator and fuel gauge not displaying any numbers. both gauges working fine, prior to accident. bodyshop took a picture upon the vehicle's arrival of the display panel documenting mileage and fuel. however, now cerritos nissan, after having care, custody, and control of the vehicle, for 3 weeks, claims that the liquid crystal just went bad due to age of car. moreover, want us to pay to fix it. there was no problem prior to the accident or car?s arrival to the shop. diagnosis of the problem, i find this response suspect. the shop also indicated many times customer leave the shop and call back with this complaint. we never left the premises. i goggle this issue shows due to moisture or cold weather is a cause for this issue occurring. was the vehicle left unprotected and subject to conditions to cause this? http://questdriver.com/node/764#comment-1666 please investigate. *tr

I have had an intermittent electrical issue with my nissan quest for the last few years (since 60,000 miles, now at 100,000 miles). the dealer has been unable to properly diagnose this issue over a period of years, and it is a safety concern. suddenly the speedometer drops to zero when i am driving and all the dashboard hazard lights go on. when i am able to pull over and turn off and restart the car, the check engine light remains on and the car is ok for a few days/weeks/months. then it all happens again. they have changed sensors, tightened all electrical connections, and now would like to change the abs actuator assembly. i notice online that this is a problem that many owners of 2004 quests have, and seems to be a serious safety issue. i have not allowed my children to drive my car. i feel this needs a recall from nissan to correct. *tr

Children was entering vehicle and door spontaneously closed on hand. this has happened periodically since, but never with the exact same circumstances. ie opened door to load packages, turned back around and door started closing.

My van had the red key warning light go on and smelled like electrical burning. i had it towed immediately to a nissan dealer kelly nissan lynnfield ma. they did check the bulletins until after test driving it twice and burning out the ignition coils they just replaced and burned out my catalytic converter (they put a new one on without reporting it) they were advised in writing not to do any work except replace the coils they said they burned out and only then at no cost to me. they replaced more than what was originally written, charged me and when they test drove it and ruined the converter it sucked up debris into the engine and destroyed my engine. called corporate nissan who said they could not help ( after they gave a 300.00 coupon because of the deception prior to finding out about the damaged engine). it all started from a loose ground wire that caused the coils to overwork and burned out. i ended up paying about $900 for repairs because the misdiagnosed and damaged parts, now the engine is estimated at 6800. to replace. i m disabled and barely able to afford the roof over my head and food. this is unacceptable behavior, niss says the dealers are independantly owned, yet they l have the same maker. i kept the coils they put in however they removed a box with the first replaced ones and did to put them all back for me as instructed. i have two technicians one a nissan tech who says it is directly due to kelly nissan's misdiagnosis and driving of the car to the point of burning up the parts. what does a consumer need to do to protect themselves? the car is out of warranty. all parts except the converter they also kept and the initial coils i have. the van was towed to the shop i used and engine light came on immediately from first time driven still in dealer lot, they could to find problem although heard sound from engine and read the misfire codes until second look after it started pouring smoke out the exhaust and sound became so bad and car was deemed unsafe to drive. *tr

I bought a nissan quest 2004 van from broad street honda dealer at richmond it has serious door problem which was not locking completely and it is obviously not save for my three children. i took the van to them and the don't want to fix the problem even it is under their warranty for 3000 mile or three months even i also bought from them an extended warranty but it is useless they said even i paid 14000 dollars of it. they simply want me to give the car to them bellow the price i bought from them. i believe it is fraud a clear fraud. please help me. *tr

The bad connection to the dash lights i think involve the overdrive on & off, side door opening and back door (no problem with back door yet). there is also a problem with the front left assembly located at the tire. i make a sharp right to transfer the weight to the left and i get a bad vibration. something is loose or bad bearings. i told nissan of smithtown located in long island,ny about the problem all they said was "ok". they would not give me a appointment to come in. but nissan of smithtown did charge me $90( under warr.) to have the slipping transmission looked at. now they have law suits for other things they did from the attorney general office. i like to have my cash back. i also like to add the windshield cracked about six months ago in the middle. must be at least two feet long. the body is twisting too much. you may reach me e-mail. thank you for your time and consideration. In december of 2006 we purchased a 2004 nissan quest se. the first year was not entirely trouble free, the drivers seat would self adjust while driving. the dealer fixed it no charge. the in december of 07 the trans went out, again the dealer covered it at no charge, gave us a loaner and were done within a week. except for the inconvenience of not having our van we were fine until now!!! in june of 08 we were going for a sunday drive and the van just died in the middle of the street. nothing would work nothing, no power anywhere. we called road side and all they could do was tow us to al piemonte nissan in melrose park, il. the following monday, the dealer calls and tells us the ecu is burnt out, and has some corrosion. it's covered under warranty so no need to far right!!! a week later we finally get a loaner, ok not too bad. two months go by and we finally have word that we have a date when the part will arrive!!!!! the part gets installed but the van runs like crap "omg you mean they actually tested it"!!!! they now are replacing a cracked distributor, god only knows how that happened!!!! the dealr does not charge us for that, but the van still runs like crap so now they have to replace three of the 6 coils and well we had to pay over $800 bucks for that. totally not expecting that we had to charge it, putting us in the hole even deeper. you know we haven't spent alot of $ on this car but for a 4 year old car it sure has had alot of major components replaced. the the freaking dealer doesn't test the car, so we leave and the remotes, doors, sunroof, windows don't work. the center counsil is falling apart and they didn't even clean the '!@#$% car. i take it back, rip the manager a new one, he gives me a loaner again and i'm back the next day to pick up my van, now they clean it. it's been a few weeks now and the van is fine but i often think what would have happened if it broke down in the middle of the interstate!!!!! *tr

I am an owner of a nissan quest which was purchased only 4 years ago. at 100, 000 miles a portion of the main computer is gone, leaving the car inoperable. the entire casing was corroded impairing the computer. a part was ordered by a nissan dealer through my mechanic.. initially we were told the part would arrive in early june (the original was ordered about may 23rd 2008) we were then told a few more days...and then june 10th, the latest being june 17th arriving at the mechanic. on the 19th i called nissan village and was told the part would arrive july 10th. and they still cannot guarantee this. i am a mom of three kids, ages 5, 4, and 7 months. i work full time and have been left with nothing to drive. we had a rental for 18 days at a cost of 850 until i no longer could afford it. since this matter, i have dealt with nissan usa, several customer service reps, and not one person at nissan, attempted to share with my why a 37,000 dollar car after 4 years is inoperable, but even worse why its taken 2 months to get a part in. it is truly unheard of- people around me are just amazed. i really just want answers- is this a problem that has occurred? corrosion after 4 years normal? a part more than 2 months??? thank you for your consideration in this matter. your time and effort will be much appreciated. *tr

Between the dates of feb 10-17, 2008; my 2004 nissan quest minivan began to experience some electrical issues. the tcs, slip, and abs lights came on in the dash and a humming noise was coming from my engine. i took my vehicle to the dealership (were i purchased it from), and as i pulled into the lot the lights went off (feb 28). the service rep. told me the information should be stored in my van's computer system. i paid $97.40 for the dealership to hook my car up for a diagnostic check only to be told that abs system pump and module assembly needed to be replaced at a cost of $1790. the service rep also told me that what ever was causing the humming noise would be repaired. only a temporary fix, because on my way back home the noise started again. he also told me that my brakes were functional but my abs unit did not affect my normal brakes. until i could have the repairs done, and with no other means of transportation, i continued to drive my van. i called back to the dealership and ask if there was anyway for them to disconnect the abs system because it was continuing to drain my battery. and i was told no, the only way was to have the repairs done. on march 8, i part my van and three hours later i returned to my van and it would not start. so it had to have my car jump started and ever since then have had to remove the terminals from the battery when i am not using the van. on feb 14, several other issue came about: 1. speedometer stopped working 2. odometer stopped working 3. air conditioner stopped working so once i pulled over, i attempted to start my vehicle and it would continously start and stop. so i made the decision to leave the van where it was parked. two days later i returned to find out that the van had actually caught on fire the on saturday feb. 15. so what am i to do.........? *tr updated

Numerous complaints with vehicle /sometimes no power ( is an issue on the freeway) turn engine off and restart car runs fine most times??? engine crank position sensor replaced with 70000 miles on the van / door recalled , fixed now acting up again / radio sometimes comes on with no sound, fixed at 30000 miles now once again a problem.. dealer tries to help but nissan absolutley no help. numerous calls to the factory customer rep, told that due to the fact problems do not occur at the dealer nissan not responsible. nissan customer rep took 3 weeks to call me i made calls every day, finally cought him. *cn

My wife, was driving our children to school, the charger warning and brake warning lamps came on. this caused the vehicle speed to decrease, and stop the vehicle into a heavy traffic intersection, which nearly caused a horrible accident. *ak
