Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2008 Nissan Pathfinder

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the transmission failed and the vehicle would not operate in reverse. there were no warning lights or sensors illuminated. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000.

May, 2016 - started noticing my pathfinder would slip when i hit the gas. the vehicle hesitated. i took into a nissan dealer which diagnosed that the radiator had leaked coolant into the transmission, resulting in the need to replace the transmission, radiator and do a full flush. the transmission needed for my truck is not available from nissan until july 3, 2016. nissan dealer can get aftermarket transmission with 3-year warranty and install for $5,600. mileage at 130,000. nissan had an extended warranty until 100,000 miles. this isn't right. issue is known by nissan and they have not yet instituted a full recall.

Transmission went out. i've been without a vehicle for over a month as parts are on back order. this is a known issue. why is nissan not prepared with replacement parts. why was warranty only extended for certain time period as they were aware of the problem. vehicle stopped running in my driveway. could have been hazardous had it stopped running on the highway.

My only one family vehicle suffered the now known 2008 nissan pathfinder radiator and transmission failure and breakdown due to coolant leak into the transmission. i've purchased this vehicle pre-owned from np mazda in san antonio texas. they did not inform me of this known issue which involved several year models for the pathfinder. i've spent a little over $5k of loaned money to have this resolve via independent transmission specialist as gunn nissan presented me with a much higher price quote. i recently found out from a local nissan service specialist that my vehicle currently have an extended warranty designed specifically for this and as a result of october 2012 class action lawsuit settled by court and nissan corp. i am attempting to have nissan help me with some of recently mentioned financial impact regarding their well known defect.

My wife was driving pathfinder with my children in it on interstate highway. few minutes after she was on the highway, the vehicle (pathfinder) was not responding to her when she pressed on gas pedal. it accelerated slowly, while she was on highway & driving at 50+ mph. sensing danger, she took an exit and came off interstate highway and the engine stopped on her completely - as she exited from highway. before stopping, the car slowed down and when my wife gave gas, it wasn't getting required speed on the interstate highway. luckily for her car stopped on the middle of the road as she entered a small lane after exiting the interstate. we got it towed to aaa service center. the nissan dealer is now saying that coolant got mixed with the transmission fluid and thus spoiled the computer that connects to engine. and it requires a complete overhaul of transmission, radiator etc and costing me $5,600. as this car is regularly serviced by nissan dealer, and this damage is not caused by driving. appears to have been caused by manufacturing design/deficiencies. when i researched on web, noticed many people having suffered with the same problem. hence wanted to report this issue so that necessary action could be taken. my fear is if the vehicle suddenly stops on an interstate - it would've certainly led to an accident.

My daughter was pulling out on to a busy road on her way to school and the transmission seized causing a near collision with a oncoming semi-truck. the semi-truck driver had to skid to avoid a tragic accident. in my opinion would have been fatal for my daughter! the mechanic told us the radiator transmission cooler leaked radiator fluid into the transmission and ruined it. i have contacted nissan about this issue and they refuse to offer any assistance. we have had the vehicle less than a year and nothing from a maintenance standpoint could have prevented this. nissan concealed the fact that the radiator had a defect straight from the manufacturing plant. they should not only be held responsible for the replacement of the radiator but also the thousands of dollars it costs for the transmission.we cannot afford to have it fixed and are out a vehicle. as far as i'm concerned they need to be reprimanded before someone dies!

Transmisson inner cooler tank in radiator leaks , getting water in transmisson. ruining transmission /computer etc. had to be rebuit. nissan wanted over $5,ooo. got it repaired at other shop over $3,000 with still having to get it programmed at nissan. poor design and faulty tanks in radiator. i had shop place external transmisson radiator and new radiator to never let this happen again. nissan was trying to buy my vehicle for $800 and was worth over $6,800 at the time. happened while driving vehicle normal city driving 15-70 miles a day at the time. per nissan and the other repair shops this is a known issue and have many repairs due to this issue. approx on date

I own a 2008 nissan pathfinder and the transmission went out due to a default in the radiator. it's going to cost me $3000 to fix a problem that nissan new about. i was on my way to lunch and it just stopped in the middle of the highway. no warning or anything.

Hi there i recently bought this vehicle 2 days ago from muller toyota philipsburg nj it have 157500 miles. the time i bought i didn't know there was transmission problem and neither the dealer didn't told me. i payed 8000 dollar plus taxes on this vehicle. after two days i found out that radiator coolant is mixed in transmission and making drilling sounds i call the dealer he didn't give me any good response. i took the car to the meinke shop they said they will change the radiator and drain the coolant and transmission oil but they not sure if there is any internal damage done to transmission or not if this didn't fixes the problem i need to repair the transmission which will cost 2700 dollar were i am going to get that money i am poor guy and i cant afford that money if i know that i will never ever buy nissan this the biggest mistake of my life. i dont no what to do now. please help i am totally screwed i almost spend 10000 dollars and i am still suffering.

Recall investigation #dp12004 : transmission control module failed during motion, causing my nissan pathfinder to stall and completely turn off in the middle of the road while driving in heavy traffic.

On my 2008 nissan pathfinder, which is only 8 years old, i have repaired my transmission due to an atf contamination via the cooling system around 95,000 miles. i purchased the vehicle at 90,000 miles used. this affected my speed control and all related systems.the radiator was replaced also due to the contamination. this has affected my cooling and heating system and all related systems.this cost my extended warranty company around $2,900+ (glad i was smart enough to purchase this warranty), however it cost me my deductible of $200.00. on february 12, 2016 i dropped my nissan off for a follow-up repair to replace the entire timing chain assembly after going in for a simple alignment earlier (which was a waste of money because you have to purchase a camper kit in order for your alignment to be 100%, $249.00 out-of-pocket). this caused me to have to buy a brand new set of tires out-of-pocket which came with a free alignment as a special, otherwise i would've re-payed for another alignment. headquarters nissan of columbus,ga never informed me of the timing chain issues with these suvs! this resulted in performance issues. again my extended warranty will pay around $1,800 to nissan for the repairs and me a $200.00 deductible. i have run out of gas in the middle of traffic on the highway in atlanta,ga during rush hour before because my gas gauge or indicator or something doesn't read or is inaccurate. i also hear noise from the tires or something when i roll over speed bumps, accelerate or bank left or right with bad, hard steering. the cooling and heating system has not blown air at times and sometimes i have to depress the gas petal while idling to heat up air that has gone cold. when the a/c does this i turn off the a/c and let the windows down, pressing the gas petal does not work. nissan says they can't find a problem with this system when diagnosing vehicle?!

Problems start after i ended payments on my car; the surround sound got bad and i have to replaced it $500. cost me. takata recall i did called the dealer and told me my vin number isn't in the recall so they said nothing to worry, then another situation came up about the fuel pump, i did called the dealer and they said my vin number isn't in the recall either and i had pay $600. in may 9, 2016 first time i was driving my car and broke down in the middle of the intersection, also another time i was driving on the bridge and when i was driving the car was going down on the bridge broke down out of not where, was very scary, police and other people help push my car to a safety area. both time was because i run out of gas cause the gear pump wasn't telling me i run out of gas. next one was the radiator and trans service. they said radiator was crack need to replace i spent $800. next problem p1774 said low coast brake-fastens solenoid valve function. all this time engine light came on and charged me $50. to reset light. then next problem is the transmission now is 4 gear come with issues and is in the mechanic now, june 6, 2017 i need to replace it and charging me $3,200. but they still working own cause they don't know yet if doesn't work i will need to pay more. this is ridiculous cause this car only have 8 years and i keep maintaining my car since i got it, so disappointed and i shouldn't didn't pay for all this cause is a recall and my car is 2008 and all the problems my car had is in the recall just cause my vin number isn't that isn't fear. hope anybody understand my frustrations and find the solution of this problems. pay me back what i being putting in to this car.

Defective radiator cracked and the fluid went into my transmission ruining both. known defect admitted by nissan, but limited warranty being awarded per class action lawsuit. this is prevalent and i should not have to pay 3,000 due to their production of a defective product it would stutter when shifting gears, and sometime not accelerate properly, very dangerous as mom driving with 4 small children!

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. while accelerating, the vehicle made a vibrating motion. also, while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the radiator was leaking onto the transmission and the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 122,600.

Contamination from radiator into transmission.

On november 6, 2015 around or about 7:00pm my v6 2008 nissan pathfinder service engine light turned on while in first gear in mostion; the suv engine and transmission turned off had no brakes and had a fender bender while in motion , had the suv towed home and checked the code on the obd and it read code: u1000 controller area network (can) communcation line sigal malfunction.did a visual check inside radiator filler port, electrical fuse (10amp fuse to the transmission blew which atomcticly told me a communication harness is open or shorted; or a faulty engine control module(ecm))and also checked the resivor filler port, found red transmission fluid and green engine coolent fluid incorporated in radiator (contamination) ,also checked transmission dip stick to see if transmisson fluids low but instead found rust at the end part of the dipstick inside the transmisson indicating engine coolent contamination (water) all inside the transmission.who know how much rust is inside the transmission until a full tear down and thorough inspection is performed.....car is stationary and will not start

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was diagnosed, but the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Our pathfinder seemingly lost power and control, almost resulting in near collision with another vehicle approaching and another vehicle behind almost rear ended while turning into shopping plaza. coasted to side while smoke and yellowish/ green liquid poured out from the hood. had to have it towed. mechanics analysis was related to contamination from coolant / radiator / transmission. complete failure of transmission and radiator and cross contamination of all related parts. possibly $6000 to $8000 repair costs. total loss to us, and we still owe for financing, truck is probably not even valued at that.

Car began experiencing difficulty shifting. repair shop reports transmission fluid and coolant intermixing, requiring replacement of both the radiator and the transmission.

Transmission cooling system runs through the radiator. faulty design/construction lead to failure, resulting in cooling fluids in the transmission, and transmission fluid in the radiator. occurred at 110k miles but nissan will not acknowledge & repairs are $5770. began with vehicle not shifting properly and then not getting out of first gear. turned around & drove the 1/2 mile back home to discover viscus emulsion in radiator reservoir. investigated & discovered this is a common problem on nissan pathfinders.

When i pulled out in to oncoming traffic my car revved but did not go anywhere. my 5 year old was in his baby seat with car and trucks honking and swerving around my truck to avoid us.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. after shifting the vehicle into reverse, a loud noise was heard and the vehicle would not move. the vehicle was towed to dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 140,000.

At just over 100k miles (101406) my radiator leaked into the transmission and ruined the transmission. nissan will not cover the repair at all because i am 1406 out of the class action settlement. speaking with the local dealer they said there was nothing i could have done from the service side to prevent it.

Cross contamination of the radiator fluid and transmission fluid due to faulty mfg(nissan) design caused transmission to fail. $3000 out of pocket due to a mfg fault!

I noticed a shudder when the car shifted from 2nd to 3rd gear but seem to drive normal otherwise. i contacted nissan service department and scheduled the first available appointment, which took exactly 1 week from date first symptom. on the morning of my appointment, my car would not shift gears at all once i got on the highway, causing very dangerous situation for both myself and other drivers. i was able to coast my car to the dealership where i was later informed from the service department that a faulty radiator leaked fluid and contaminated the transmission fluid, resulting in a failed transmission. repair costs would be $5230, but the manager would agree to do it for $4165. i was told at the dealership they were aware of faulty radiator in the 2005-06 models but were unaware other models had the same issue. i had already researched the problem, to find that numerous complaints had been filed regarding 2005-2010 pathfinder, xterras, and frontier and nissan had settled a class action law suit by offering an extended warranty for the radiator assembly. since i was barely outside of the extended warranty, i contacted nissan consumer affairs to inquire about assistance with goodwill repair since the transmission failure was the result of a manufacturing defect. i was informed by the regional specialist she would need a week to review the case. one week to the date, she returned my call inquiring if i would be willing to pay the copay listed in the extended warranty and i informed her yes. she then inquired if i would be interested in a possible vpp discount on a 2015 nissan automobile. i informed her i was interested in all options in order to make the best choice for my situation. she asked for two more days to review case and returned my call two days later to tell me nissan was unable to provide any type of assistance to me in my repairs.

Transmition failure hard shifting due to coolant contaminates the transmition, radiator and transmition needs to be replace

Was told transmission failed due to faulty radiator.

Transmission fluid mixed in with radiator fluid. leaking out of truck. know issue with nissan trucks.

Vehicle began lurching and shuddering driving a low speeds ~40 mph in town, until gear shift occurred then sporadically at highway speeds. at first the shuddering/jerking was periodic and started to occur more often at random at that speed. the mileage on the vehicle was about 108,000 miles in fall of 2014. this occurred over a period of 6-8 months and then progressed to issues with cabin heater blowing cooler air when thermostat set to 90 degrees. took to dealership to address issue with heater and upon test drive dealership determined that the issue was due to the radiator fluid leaking into the transmission causing the fluids to mix. replaced both radiator and transmission to the tune of $5000.

Felt jerking while driving at 40-45 mph to the point where it felt like i was losing control of the vehicle on the road. it felt like it would go to neutral and suddenly back into gear really hard so it would cause something like a torque pull. so, took to dealer service shop and was diagnosed as defective radiator cracked and leaked coolant fluid into the radiator cooler causing a catastrophic failure of the automatic transmission. fortunately, didn't lose control while driving but it felt close to sometimes. i believe a less experienced driver could have lost control of vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle started violently shaking without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the transmission failed to change gears properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a transmission flush but the failure recurred. the contact indicated that the vehicle was shaking and vibrating with an abnormal noise as the failure progressed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that there was a fracture in the connection piece to the radiator and that caused the transmission fluid leaking into the radiator. the dealer stated that the radiator and the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 124,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathifinder. the contact stated that the transmission failed. the dealer stated that anti-freeze and oil leaked into the transmission causing it to fail. the manufacturer stated that this was an isolated incident and would not be covered. the transmission was replaced. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 110,000.

How is this not a recall?? im driving down the freeway with my family in the vehicle and the transmission decides to start shaking and slip right out of gear as i am in the far left lane trying to get over to stop the car!! almost causing a huge accident!! all my transmission fluid has leaked in with my coolant for my rad. destroying my transmission.

My radiator was replaced in 8/14 due to a hose coming loose and causing fluids to comingle. 5/2/15 while driving my children home from soccer my check engine light came on, the car could barely accelerate. i drove to a garage, and was told that the radiator needed to be replaced. towed car to the garage that replaced radiator 8/11/14, after two and a half days am being told my 08 pathfinder must be towed to a dealer to have the transmission control module replaced and reprogrammed. the car has 89,000 miles. *tr

Radiator fluid leaked into transmission fluid and now transmission is polluted and will need to be changed. *tr

The radiator failed causing engine coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. this caused damage to all of the engine coolant parts and caused a complete transmission failure. *tr

My wife was driving our 2008 nissan pathfinder when her service engine soon and 4wd warning light came on while pulling up to an intersection. when she pulled away from the intersection the vehicle moved very slowly and would no longer shift. after shutting the vehicle off it would not start again. a transmission shop has tested the transmission fluid and found glycol contamination from the transmission cooler that has shorted the transmission control module. the vehicle requires a complete transmission rebuild, new tcm and a radiator bypass to remedy the problem. total cost will be approximately $4000. *tr

2008 pathfinder - radiator cracked causing fluid to leak into and destroy the transmission. this is a known problem to nissan. problem has occurred to thousands of vehicles. issue originally occurred in december, 2013. issue was fixed at butler nissan. issue repaired with substandard and used parts, which resulted in same issue occurring - radiator cracking, which caused catastrophic failure to the transmission. issue occurred while we were driving the vehicle. fluid leaked into engine, caused the engine to smoke and obstruct our view of the road. we were able to pull car into business without a collision. concerned that nissan was willing to allow an unsafe vehicle back out on the road after knowingly repairing an issue with substandard parts. *tr

Catastrophic cooling/transmission failure. traveling east on a heavily traveled single lane highway with no breakdown lane. sudden noise from the engine compartment, sounding like liquids being expelled. check engine light comes on. engine temperature gauge pegs to high. limped along the highway until i could reach a safe point to pull the overheating vehicle off road. arranged for a tow and had the vehicle inspected. the inspection revealed failure of the radiator. after further inspection and with some research, it was discovered that nissan has a known design flaw that contributes to the eventual failure, in a catastrophic event, of the cooling and transmission components. my vehicle was mixing engine coolant and transmission fluid together. the sudden failure of the radiator, expelled engine cooling and transmission fluid in a sudden and rapid event. this is a known and documented event that nissan is fully aware of. a sudden failure of these components poses a safety risk for the owner, occupant, public and environment. *tr

Car would not accelerate from a stop it was as if it was not shifting to first gear from a stop. also while driving the car would begin to shudder violently and would not stop until the vehicle came to a complete stop. as it turns out, a line inside radiator coming from the transmission broke and caused contamination. coolant mixed with transmission fluid created a sludge that contaminated both coolant system and transmission. radiator was replaced and coolant system flushed as well as transmission flushed. a week later the car was parked and would not start. as it turns out the transmission blew a fuse and was not registering that the vehicle was in park. this is all related to the same problem the transmission control module (tcm) was burned out from the sludge created by coolant and transmission fluid. so now, either the transmission needs to be replaced because the clutch and gears are potentially burned up or the tcm. with just a tcm there is no guarantee that the transmission will not fail due to no way of knowing the condition of the clutch and transmission gears. vehicle is still in the shop for over a month now and we have been forced to purchase a new car to meet our transportation needs. *tr

Radiator fluid leaked into transmission due to poor design of the cooling system for the transmission. this issue cost $4200 to repair the transmission.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle shifted gears without warning. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque convertor and radiator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 148,145.

My wife was driving her pathfinder and it stopped in the middle of an intersection. my wife is disabled and has had many back surgery. the radiator is leaking into the transmission causing it to stall at anytime loosing power to the power steering and brakes. i believe this is a life threatening issue losing power down the highway with a truck behind you can cause a serious accident. 2 gentlemen got out of there vehicles to push my wife to safety. *tr

Vehicle threw a code (p0463 - fuel gauge sending unit) indicating the fuel gauge sending unit is malfunctioning. this is a problem which nissan north america is aware of however failing to correct on many vehicles. failure of the fuel gauge sending unit has many possible severe symptoms including, but not limited to: 1) failure of the fuel gauge to properly indicate levels of fuel, 2) failure of the fuel gauge in its entirety and/or 3) failure of the sending unit to properly function while in vehicles are in use potentially causing affected vehicles to shut down while in motion. also a know problem with radiator leaking into automatic transmission which resulted in class action lawsuit against nissan north america. settlement was reached in which nissan offers to pay for any and all repairs only if malfunction occurs, however when malfunction occurs it can be a significant safety issue affecting the performance of the impacted vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 nissan pathfinder. while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle shuddered and stalled. the vehicle was able to restart, but the gear was stuck in the park position. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the valve body needed to be repaired. in addition, radiator fluid leaked into the transmission fluid and caused the vehicle to need a new transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 114,000.

Transmission failures. *tr

Started noticing a vibration in the pathfinder at 40 miles per hour. called to set an appointment and the dealer did not get back to me. the problem got worse called again and got through after waiting 20 minutes. took it in today and was told i need a radiator and transmission for $4500.00. i told them to let me think about it. then found out that this is going on with many nissan vehicles. there was a class action law suit but because i now have over 100000 miles it does not apply to me. so this manufacturing defect is totally out of pocket for me. if they know of a manufacturing defect should this not be a recall. *tr

Coolant leaked into the engine compartment causing significant transmission issues. the problem was supposed to resolved as we had it cleaned up...the vehicle worked ok for a couple of days and the problem reappeared getting worse and worse...the vehicle is undrivable at this point. this is not the first time i've heard of this issue with this make and model.

I, a female, purchased a 2008 nissan pathfinder from integrity chevrolet in chattanooga, tn. a day later the pathfinder is skipping, vibrating and rattling, rear end clunking at 40 mph. shifts hard at 4 and 5. got 4 mechanics and the nissan dealership to check all this out and they all concluded the coolant overflow tank was filthy, stinks- not the sweet smell- smelled burnt and rusty. the valves were bloated and radiator cap seal was loose. low on coolant, high in water. transmission and radiator needs to be flushed and checked for 'sludge'! the dealership's associate, [xxx] , assured me the 2008 pathfinder had been serviced and all fluids checked and filled. the nissan dealership and the 4 mechanics all stated that 'no service or fluids were checked!' if it had been, the dealership would have known of this transmission issue! the coolant from the radiator is mixing with the transmission fluid in the transmission, causing a milky- sludge. no one can convince me that this dealership, integrity chevrolet, in chatt, tn, did not know of this issue- it is a very common issue with the nissan pathfinders, xterras and frontiers years 2006-2010. any good associate would have known this issue- in order to sell this automobile honestly! [xxx] , to whom i have known for over 20 years, screwed me over and saw an unknowing, innocent woman coming his way! i had to be a good joke that day. this dealership knew they had to get rid of this pathfinder quickly b/c it is a 'lemon'! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
