Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2004 Nissan Murano

I contacted nissan on 12/20/17 after i drove my 2004 nissan murano (purchased 8/18) and i heard a loud clunk as my son and i were on a college tour. i drove the car to my mechanic and when i showed him the problem, he wondered how i was able to drive the car when the back wheels were "toed" inward. he put it on the lift and told me that the sub frame was disintegrated. the car only has 124,000 miles on it. i contacted nissan and they had me take the car to a nissan dealership to have them diagnose it. it was as my mechanic had said, the rear sub frame was completely disintegrated by rust, un-drivable. the front sub frame is totally fine, no rust. i have done some research on my own and from one website i have found approximately 10 others that have had the same thing happen to their cars; some the same year and same mileage. i do not think this is a strange coincidence. i feel that there is something wrong beyond "normal wear and tear". nissan refuses to admit that there is a bigger problem and the extremely hazardous situation that is happening. if the sub frame would have collapsed while i was driving on the interstate my son, myself and god only knows who else on the road that would have been injured by car parts flying all over the road. i do not have pictures of the car but the mechanic knows and it has taken him a month to fix my car (still don't have it back) and a 3500.00 price tag on the repairs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. while driving 25-30 mph in inclement weather, the vehicle became uncontrollable without warning. upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the rear subframe was extremely corroded. the contact stated that the upper control arm subframe was detached due to corrosion. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 83,292.

Exiting a highway and taking ramp to enter an avenue, driver lost control of the car turning right at intersection. front left tire hit the curve side and car rolled over 2 full rolls. driver and passenger had seat bells on. car body took strong hits on both sides, posts between side windowsroof, windshield frame, hood. seat bells never locked down during roll over and none of the airbags deployed. driver and passenger had head, knees and back injuries. it would be expected the seat bells to lock down and at least the side airbags to deployed. pictures available at your request.

The rear sub frame broke in two pieces, while making a right-hand turn, causing loss of control of the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. while driving approximately 35 mph, the subframe fractured. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the subframe needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was not available.

I was driving on my way to a near highway with my two children, and i heard a small knocking noise. i slowed down to a near parking lot, because i thought it was an engine cover that was loose, but the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. when i had it towed, after mothers day weekend, i was told that the problem was the transfer case. nissan offers a warranty for the cvt transmission (due to known failures with it) that covers 10 years 120,000 miles, but does not include the transfer case (which is another known problem with the 03 04 murano models). it cost $3,178 to fix the problem at the nissan dealership (which i had done). when looking for this part there is a vast increase in price between the 03 04 model in comparison to any other model, because there is such a higher demand for this particular part (which indicates that this is a frequent problem with these models). i was told at the dealership that the seals from the transmission were leaking, hence why it broke. the problem is, that i was at that same dealership not too long before due to an alternator problem, and they gave me a list of problems with the vehicle which included: the belt, the belt tensioner, alternator, wheel bearing, and rear brakes, but never mentioned leaking seals on the transfer case. there are way too many factors indicating that there was a manufacturing/engineering problem with the transfer case on these two models that was fixed on later models. i do not feel safe driving vehicle. i asked nissan to repurchase the vehicle or give me some sort of solution to this problem, because i do not feel safe driving it after the last experience with it, and they declined. had this failure occurred at the highway it could have been fatal. on top of that the nissan dealership returned my vehicle, after a $3,178 fix, with a cracked windshield and will not respond for it. unbelievable. *tr

There has not been a wreck yet, but if my 16 year old daughter continues to drive this car there will be a wreck. we bought our 16 year old daughter a 2004 nissan murano. the driver side sun visor randomly drops down while she is driving. nissan wants 400.00 to replace the sun visor. this is a defect in the vehicle. i have gone online there are 100's of complaints about the 2004 nissan murano's sunvisor. i want to issue a formal compliant about this very serious problem!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. the contact stated that the passenger side front door handle failed and became detached from the door. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 100,000.

There are three ways to lock and unlock the doors; using the remote, using the key and using the interior locks. the remote does not lock nor unlock the driver's nor the front passenger doors. the key, which can only be used in the driver's door lock, will lock and unlock all doors except the front passenger side door. the interior locking mechanism located on the drivers door will not unlock nor lock the front driver's nor the passenger side doors. at this time the only way to unlock the driver's and the front passenger side doors is to reach over and use the interior handle. once the front doors are unlocked the only way to lock them is to manually move the locking switch to the locked position. this problem seems to have affected hundreds if not thousands of nissan murano's the inability to lock and unlock the front doors is critical to the safety of the vehicle's occupants. the driver cannot lock the front doors, which is paramount when a child is riding in the car. not locking the doors can be critical in the event of a motor vehicle accident. it is a well known fact that the safest place to be in the event of an accident is in the car and the inability of the driver to insure that all doors are locked is critical to everyone's safety. having an unlocked door open in a crash increases the probability that an occupant will be ejected from a car thereby increasing injuries and the probability of death; not knowing that all doors are locked results in unnecessary risk. *tr

I have a nissan murano 2004 with approx 66,000 miles...all four actuators failed at the same time. when i looked into this issue on line, i see that many other murano owners have the same issue. when the actuators fail you are no longer able to look the doors, there causing a security issue, especially if you have children. i find it strange that so many people are having the same problem. my husband and parents have 2004 model cars, and have no issues with their looks. please hold nissan responsible for this issue. *tr

Automatic left side door lock does not function automatically. front right side and left rear door locks only work intermittently. i have been told door actuators need to be replaced. problem cannot be fixed without complete replacement. this appears to be a problem either with faulty design or production. inability to automatically lock doors from the inside could present safety problem. *kb

At approximately 60,000 miles with the age of the car being approximately five (5) years old the front passenger door would not unlock or lock when the remote actuator was used. this got progressively worse and then less than a year later the driver's side door began doing the same thing. now neither one of these doors will work correctly and often lock on their own without the remote actuator or the internal manual locking system being used. this has spread to the rear doors too but only intermittently at this time. i have read on the internet that many many owners of a nissan murano of almost every model year eventually experience this problem. this creates a safety problem should entry into the vehicle or exit from the vehicle in an emergency situation be required because the doors will not unlock from the outside without a key and the only door that has a key slot is the drivers side front door. if the key's in the ignition how would anyone on the outside of the vehicle get the doors open in an emergency? there was a recall issued a few years ago in australia for this very same problem on a different nissan model vehicle. if this was a safety issue there and was acknowledged by nissan to be their responsibility to resolve i cannot help but ask "why isn't this being taken care of here in the usa by nissan?" nissan and their dealers have known of this safety problem for years and quote between $400 and $500 to fix just one door. many owners report via the internet that this problem exists on at least 2 doors and some report all 4 doors including the rear lift gate have this problem. something needs to be done to resolve this problem and protect the owners and occupants of these vehicles. *tr

Good morning! i am having trouble with the door handles on my 2004 nissan murano sl. the front passenger side handle broke off one morning when i tried opening the door, about one year ago. now, two weeks ago, i was opening the driver's side front door, and again the handle broke off. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan murano se. at approximately 50,000 miles, the drivers' side sun visor had some sort of internal mechanical failure which makes it fall down in front of my face while driving. my extended warranty company refuses to fix it, claiming it is a "trim" item, and the dealership claims it is no longer their problem as the car isn't under warranty. however, it seems to me that this is a safety item, since every time it falls down, it obscures my view of the roadway. when i searched online, i found many other nissan murano owners on online forums complaining of the same issue with their 2003 through 2006 muranos with relatively low mileage failures of this particular part. *tr

I put the back tailgate up in my 2004 nissan murano to put my granddaughters' belongings in to take them home. i walked to the back seat area to put something in the back seat, when i heard a huge whooshing sound and suddenly the entire door slammed down. luckily i wasn't near it or i could have been killed. the door is very heavy and it slammed down with quite a force. there was a strong smell of a vaporized nature in the car. now the door is very difficult to open and requires both hands to do so. evidently one of the hydraulic struts went out. this poses a significant danger to anyone nearby. i have called the dealer and am taking it in today. they were very non-committal about it being something they would repair without cost. they did say it was a very rare occurrence. i am very concerned about this incident and want to report it. if others are not aware, there could be a very serious accident. i am concerned about my own safety as well. *tr

I ran off the left side of a mountain road hitting a large tree with the driver's door, then continued down the hill another ~20 feet slamming into a boulder. when i hit the tree, the driver's door window broke as well as the driver's side rear door. the door was jammed shut. the nissan was equipped with front side impact airbags and both front and rear head protection airbags. none were deployed. when i hit the boulder, the front passenger airbag deployed, but the driver's front airbag failed to deploy. the pre-tensioner on the driver's seatbelt did not latch resulting in me hitting my upper chest and lower jaw on the steering wheel since the airbag did not deploy. the fuel cut-off device also failed to activate and shut off the engine. after almost a minute, i turned off the engine with the key. i had been knocked unconscious for several seconds. the 2004 nissan murano sustained over $25,000 in damage which resulted in it being totaled by my insurance company. the airbag light would illuminate briefly when starting the car prior to the accident. so there was no indication of an airbag malfunction. there was substantial damage to the driver's side of the vehicle as well as the front and undercarriage. my injuries were limited to bruises to my chest and lower jaw. the accident also greatly aggravated a prior injury to my upper back. when i went to go remove my personal belongings from the vehicle, i found that the jack, mounted in the rear floor had come completely out. *tr

Failure of rear engine mount on my 2004 nissan murano with 40,000 miles. without replacing said mount safety would come into question. parts are on order is this a common failure. should nissan be held responsible and make good? *nm

Every time i get out of my car, place my feet on the ground, and then touch metal that being the car frame or car door, i get shocked. the only way i do not get shocked is by touching the metal continuously as i place my feet on the ground and then i am able to close the door without getting shocked. the only other time i do not get shocked is when it is raining. this does not happen when i get out of any other car. i am beginning to hate my car because of this. why is it doing this. i have told the people at the dealership when i get my oil changed and they have no answers and do not seem interested in checking into this. *nm

The left xenon headlight in the consumer's 2004 nissan murano was stolen. *nar** *nm *jb a thief entered the consumers vehicle via keyhole, popped the keyhole and stole the left light. the consumer felt that the easy entrance was a defect. *sc *jb

Failure of driver side sun visor. suddenly falls causing a safety issue. dealer replaced once and second visor also failed. *tr

My 2004 nissan murano began having a "tinny" noise coming from the front passenger door. i thought that perhaps the insulation had fallen down, and took the car in for servicing on 1-13-05 to ferman nissan in tampa, florida. i was told that the dealership could not repair the door, as the door beam was broken, and that the body shop would have to replace a door beam. in december 2004, the car had been involved in minor vandalism. a brick had been thrown at the rear of the car, and there was sand on the passenger door. there was barely a dimple on the exterior of the door, but the service department surmised that someone kicked the door, which was why there was sand, and that the door beam was broken in the process. i took the car to a body shop for an estimate in april 2004, and they were surprised that the door beam could have been so easily broken, as this was supposed to be a safety feature of the car. i was told that because it was a safety feature, a door beam cannot be repaired, and that the door would have to be replaced. i contacted nissan usa in on april 7, 2005, and explained my concerns that the door beam could be so easily broken, with barely a mark on the exterior, and this would not protect passengers in a crash situation. i offered them the opportunity to inspect the door, as a possible manufacturing defect, and possibly pay to replace it, but, per collette, they were not interested in inspecting the door. neither was the local dealership, ferman nissan in tampa, florida. however, i wanted to be sure that this incident was recorded somewhere, as i am still concerned that the door beam could be so easily broken, causing a potential safety hazard. i have since had the door replaced, and the expense was covered by my insurance company.

I have a noise/squeak/rattle behind my glove box. my car has been to the dealer over 10 times for this issue and it hasn't been repaired. it is not making the vehicle un-drivable, but a brand new vehicle should not be doing that.*ak
