We have classified the 86 complaints from 2004 Nissan Murano about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. the contact noticed that the vehicle was losing power while driving at an unknown speed. a few seconds later, the vehicle regained power. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the battery and alternator; however, the vehicle still did not have power. the dealer stated that the transmission also needed to be replaced at the estimated cost of $5,000. a report was filed with the manufacturer (number 6529588) and they stated that they would call the contact back. the current and failure mileages were 78,000.
I have a 2004 nissan murano that not running due to the transmission. i took mt vehicle to the nissan dealership several times complaining about noise, acceleration on the gas pedal out of the blue, speed decreasing while driving on hwy at 70mph, to 10 or less mph. i've spent about $3000 on a calculator conversion and exhaust system, that i might not even needed. i had to have my truck towed to the nissan dealership that has been servicing my truck. they said my transmission was out of warranty. my transmission was under warranty when the problem began last year, but the dealership p tech choose to word the problems a different way not to reflect transmission issue. dealership nor nissan want to assist to fix my truck. i have about 152,000k on my truck now, but i had way less when problems began. i need assistance to get truck fix, i'm sill paying the $9000. i owe in it. nissan is not stepping up to the plate when they knew there were transmission issues in the murano truck. i'm very unhappy, discussed, sad that i'm trapped in a truck that's not safe. *tr
Nissan murano cvt transmission causes delayed acceleration. after 65,000 miles the vehicle did not immediately respond when the accelerator was pushed. it would inch forward then surge. at one time i barely avoided a major accident when merging into traffic and the engine did not respond to the accelerator; then suddenly shot forward a couple seconds later almost causing a collision from the delay. when i took it in they said i needed a new transmission; but i noted that there was not a rise in rpm's when it did not accelerate as would be the case if it was slipping. when i asked about that they said it was probably the solenoid switch that keeps the engine from revving when there is a transmission problem. after checking on the internet i found web sites with many people reporting the same problem. many said they found it was the switch getting dirty and then shutting down the rpms. i tried a transmission fluid change and it solved the problem for about 30,000 miles then starting doing it again. i changed again and it is once again resolved. besides the fact that nissan has a manufacturing issue here this problem is very dangerous. when you step down on the gas and there is a delay it causes you to divert your attention from driving; typically you automatically pump the gas again. then the sudden surge forward is unexpected and may put you in a place you did not now (after the delay) want to be; especially if merging into traffic. *tr
I was driving my 2004 nissan murano down a busy street with no shoulder and i had a complete transmission failure. luckily, i was not hit by any cars. the car had to be towed. the only fix is to replace the entire transmission. total cost: over $6000.00 i do not have $6000.00 to repair the vehicle. the band in the cvt transmission failed and can not be replaced. i have only 85,000 miles on the murano. this is a common defect on '03 and '04 muranos and nissan does not recognize this and will not work with me to resolve this issue. *tr
Two main problems with my 2004 nissan murano.... biggest is brake problems. brake pads and rotors have been replaced twice and there is still a noise when braking along with bad vibration when slowing down. the vibration can be felt in the steering wheel. also, there is a clinking noise in the engine when taking off at slow speeds. it sounds like the motor is going to drop. this has been to expensive to fix, so i continue to drive it as is. very unhappy with the quality of this vehicle. many repairs including small that aren't worth having the vehicle. no dealer wants to take as trade in. *tr
The cvt transmission went out in my 2004 murano with 70,000. prior to it going out i was experimenting unexpected acceleration and deceleration from the transmission. when approaching a stop light i let off the accelerator only to have the vehicle to accelerate before slowing down. *tr
2004 nissan murano, 71,000 miles. sudden catastrophic failure of the drive train. no warning, no indicator. car was gently driven. *tr
While driving the car to a family function (20 miles, mixed highway and local) heard a slight noise followed by a sound like a tire going flat. slowed to check tires, when noise stopped. continued to destination without another occurrence. car sat for approximately 2 hours, then we returned home, again mixed highway and local roads. no noises or indicator lights on dashboard. upon exiting highway, heard a very loud bang from the front end, similar to driving through a deep pothole. there were no potholes on the highway ramp. limped to home (approximately 1 mile from end of ramp), car was smoking and there was some noise from front end, but it could still be driven. upon arriving home, saw that the car was leaking clear fluid from the front center-right of the vehicle. had car flat bedded to local service shop for diagnosis and repair. local service shop could not repair. flat bedded to nissan dealer. nissan indicated that the front differential had failed, and nissan is the only source for this part. car has been driven 70,000 miles. drive train warranty 60,000. cost of repair $3,800. car has been regularly maintained. car has only been driven on highways and local roads. it is absolutely ridiculous for a major drive train component to fail catastrophically on a vehicle that is driven gently and well cared for. *tr
Nissan recall for 2004 murano air intake system. *nj the consumer's children were driving the vehicle. when they pulled out of a busy parking lot, the vehicle would not accelerate properly. the vehicle was towed to the closest dealership and the next day, the consumer was informed the transmission had failed and a new one would cost $6,000. also the door latches and hatch were inoperative. the consumer believed the failure was the result of the recall.
2004 murano sl awd with only 29,000 miles when the vehicle was started the service engine soon light, slip light, and vdc light came on and stayed on. upon pushing the gas pedal, it took a couple seconds for any acceleration to occur. after getting on the highway and pressing the gas pedal again, the acceleration was delayed and would only go up to about 40 mph, but the rpms were extremely high. every time i try to take off from a stop, it takes awhile for any acceleration to occur. feels like the transmission is slipping. vehicle had to be towed and i had to pay for it. now i'm being told that even with only 29,000 miles, it's not covered under warranty. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. the contact stated that after stopping and depressing the accelerator pedal the vehicle did not accelerate. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where a leak in the transmission was diagnosed. the contact was advised to replace the throttle body and catalytic converter. the vehicle was repaired but the failure continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance because the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.
My 2004 murano is now clocking 80,000 miles. i notice a problem within the last 20,000 miles whenever i get stuck in stop and go traffic. i would step on the gas and nothing would happen for a few seconds and suddenly it takes off. i had to slam on my brake to prevent smacking into the car in front. this problem continues throughout the stop and go traffic ordeal. my dealer informed me that he is not aware of this problem and suggested a transmission service. this problem has continued but always after driving the car for a while or when i am in stop and go traffic. this is a safety issue. i understand from the dealer that it is a pressure sensor problem that is typical for model that i have. the problem is the cost repair is half of the value of the car. *tr
While driving my 2004 nissan murano the vehicle would not accelerate in traffic and was forced to coast to the side of the road and restart the vehicle. my 8 year old son was with me and this could have caused an accident and injury. superior nissan, where i purchased the care less than 5 months prior, said that the transmission valve body and cam lobe sensor was going bad. the vehicle has only 67,000 miles on it. the dealer refused to stand behind their product and quoted us a cost of $2200 to repair. after reading hundreds of similar complaints on the internet, i feel that nissan should be forced to recall all murano models with the cvt transmission and repair them. this is a know problem and they are ignoring the fact they put out a defective product that could cause injuries or deaths. *tr
My 2004 nissan murano, with 75,000 miles started to have transmission problems. it would not accelerate, and seemed not to shift into gear. then it just stopped. eventually it would not shift at all, and when put into gear, the car would thump and then stall or die. the nissan dealer, bill hood nissan, hammond, louisiana said they would need to replace with a new transmission...this original charge was $4,635. i cannot afford this expense so i was not able to have the work done there. after reading the nissan owner's website postings, i found that this has been a recurring problem with a very large number of nissan murano owners...so much so, that i personally believe nissan should have recalled this transmission. i am a very upset nissan customer, as the normal drivetrain warranty is only 60,000 miles, and not the usual implied warranty of 100,000 miles. i am hoping that by positing this, others may become aware of this issue, before it is too late, and they end up making payments on a transmission replacement, -or- please purchase the extended drivetrain warranty from nissan. *tr
The transmission causes the engine to stall when stopping at a light, then jerks. *tr
Car started to jerk forward when i was 2 hours into a 3 1/2 hour drive. this occurred when i came upon heavy highway traffic, and had to idle in traffic. temperature outside was about 98 to 100 degrees, and the car was not overheating (no smoke/temp gauge was normal). later on into the drive, the car began to jerk forward and cut out at stop lights. i had to turn the car off at the stop light then turn it back on to get the car to drive. later on in the day, the car got progressively worse. it started to make a laboring/whining sound and would not accelerate beyond a particular speed or respond to the gas pedal. eventually, turning the car off then on did not work. the car would drive about 20 feet then would not accelerate, then coast to a stop. i had to be towed from philadelphia to virginia because there were no nissan shops, nor auto shops open during that time of a saturday. sunday would not have been a business day for mechanics either. i live in virginia. *tr
The problem occurs on a hot day in stop and go traffic where once you come to a stop, when pushing the gas pedal down it takes a good 10-30 seconds before you get any response from the transmission, and when you finally do, it's very very slow as if the car is stuck in 4th gear trying to accelerate. while driving 30mpg+, it starts to feel like the car is pulling back, in an incorrect gear. doing a quick search shows that many other owners of a nissan murano experience this problem, and that the dealership says that its the pressure sensor and the transmission needs replacement, costing between $5400-$7000. i have not contacted dealership yet but after reading other customer's complaints it doesn't look like i would have any luck getting this fixed without having to pay for a whole new transmission. *tr
Hi, i was driving down the road and turned the corner and heard a horrible noise. there was no warning, no lights on the dash -nothing. i had the car towed to a automotive shop. i was told they did not work on the problem. so i had the car towed to the local nissan dealer. the nissan dealer said i had a cracked transfer case and the estimate to get it fixed is $5049.96. i owe $1780.00 on the car. and nothing has been done because i don't have 5k to fix it. *tr
At 67,000 miles the transfer case of my 04 awd murano cracked. as a result a control panel and switch were also damaged. grand total to repair $4200. only event leading up to the failure was a clicking or slapping sound 3 days previous to the part completely failing. i thought that the noise was related to my recent tire rotation initially and the car completely broke down on the way to the repair shop. website poll with 43% of people responding that they had problems with this part referred me to this site. *tr
Leasing a nissan murano 2004. i had the transmission replaced at 26k and now at 100k the dealership is telling me that it needs to be replaced again. a transmission should last the life of the vehicle. *tr
2004 nissan murano would periodically not shift from neutral into reverse or park. this problem began to appear about 2 years ago. sometimes the problem lasted for a day or two sometimes for a week or more. it only happened in the winter. the first 2 times i brought it to the dealer they could not find any problem. there is a work around (bypass) for the reverse lockout problem in the owner's manual so the manufacturer was aware of a potential for trouble. about march 2010 the problem appeared and did not disappear. i brought it to the dealer they had the car for 2 days and could not identify the cause. they recommended replacing the entire shifter. i requested they disconnect the lockout mechanism. they said they couldn't because it was a safety device. so i told them it should be repaired at no cost to me. about a year ago i filed a complaint regarding this problem with nissan. i asked the dealer to talk with nissan and gave them the complaint file #. nissan said the vehicle was no longer under warranty so i had to pay for the repair. my internet search indicates there is a problem with the reverse lockout on the 2004 murano that was covered by nissan in most instances but there is no tsb on the issue and nissan says it is normal wear and tear. *tr
Vehicle will drive normally. without any warnings the vehicle will quickly slow down to 10 - 15 mph. the engine remains running at approx. 3k rpms but with very few, if any, power transferred to the transmission. the check engine light does not illuminate and if the vehicle is shut off and re-started; the condition clears. *tr
I have been told by the nissan dealer that my transfer case needed to be replaced. it locked up when i was in the all-wheel drive mode over 50 mph. they initially told me this was a problem which has been addressed in new models but they were unwilling to consider a recall even though it leads to freeze-ups while being driven. blogs clearly show that hundreds of written in regarding this issue with the 2003 and 2004 muranos. i paid over $5,500 and now have additional transmission issues just a few months later. *tr
Nov 2007 had transmission failure at approx 50,000 miles. this happened on the interstate, engine suddenly cut out & had to cross over 4 lanes to get to rt shoulder. was covered under warranty but now have transfer case on the verge of failure at 62000 miles, just 2000 outside of warranty. *tr
Two transfer case failures leaving the car stopped in traffic. needed to be towed to dealer. date listed is for last failure only. dealer replaced the transfer case under warranty the first time. second time required $4000 payment. no explanation as to the cause of the failure provided by dealer. *tr
On two occasions within two weeks the car would not respond to the accelerator. the engine would rev up, but the car would not move. then without warning, the car will go "into gear" and move. after two weeks the problem occurred again. car would lose drive train power, but all other functions, radio, ac, steering would still work. the car simply would not go when the accelerator was pressed. then the transmission would work all of a sudden and then quit all of a sudden. *jb
I have a 2004 nissan murano and have experienced several problems to date. first, after about one year of ownership the idler pulley bracket cracked (2/21/06) and had to be replaced. for the last year the brakes have squeaked and when brought to the dealership they reported they could not find a problem. currently (9/02/07) i am experiencing the same idler pulley bracket problem and will have to take the care in to be serviced and inconvenienced once again. *tr
Issue with 2004 sl murano. at 68k miles, felt a shudder and vibration in steering wheel, without warning. took it to mechanic where car died while going in reverse. took it to transmission specialist who could not diagnose issue. towed car to nissan dealership. another "diagnosis" performed and confirmed transmission was issue. no specific reason give. new transmission ordered, but turned out to be defective. car would not go in reverse. nissan confirmed that they knew about this issue. replacement transmission sent and installed. rude service from dealership, no help from nissan customer "specialist." new transmission cost was $6000 (parts and labor). had no option but to put new transmission, because nissan does not rebuild old transmissions. *jb
Bad transmission and my catalytic converter went bad at 80,000. on my 2004 nissan murano transmission has been slipping since 70, 000. *tr
Tl* - the contact states that on 12/20/06 around 10:00 am the contact drove her 2004 nissan murano out of her driveway and proceeded to drive down an alley at about 2 mph. after making a left hand turn onto the main road of a residential area, the vehicle accelerated to about 50 mph without the contact touching the accelerator. the contact tried continuously applying the brakes, but vehicle never came to a stop. the contact states that the brakes went down to the floor. she had a hard time steering the vehicle while trying to get vehicle to come to a stop. the contact then hit a parked flat bed trailer, and the front tires of her vehicle drove up on the flat bed and the vehicle the rolled over on its side landing on the passenger side. the contact was dazed and witnesses climbed up onto the vehicle to get her out. the contact states there was fuel leaking from the vehicle, and once out of vehicle she and witnesses notice that the wheels of the vehicle continued turning at a high rate while on it side. the contact states that one of the witnesses climbed onto the vehicle and shut the ignition off but couldn't get key out of ignition. the police was called and a report filed and pictures were taken. the contact has called the nissan corporation and filed a complaint and was given #557-22135 as a reference number.
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 25 mph on dry normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled, and was able to be restarted. the vehicle stalled again, after traveling 10 yards. it was towed to the dealership, who performed a diagnostic, and determined that the alternator needed to be replaced. the check engine and battery light were illuminated prior to the incident. the stalling recurred a year later on 07/17/06 while traveling 30 mph. the check engine light was illuminated prior to the incident. the vehicle was restarted and driven to another dealership, who replaced the throttle meter. this corrected the problem. on 10/24/06, the problem recurred while traveling 30 mph, and was towed to another dealership, who could not service the vehicle due to lack of parts needed for the diagnostic. the vehicle was towed to another dealership, who determined the automatic transmission was defective, and was replaced. this remedied the problem. the contact wrote a complaint letter to the manufacturer and dealer on 10/29/06, but had yet to receive a response. *ak updated 12/28/2006 - *nm
2004 nissan murano with 44,500 miles. transmission disengages while car us running. engine stays on but car decelerates. happened 3 times while driving in the middle of a busy highway, while crossing a busy intersection, and while driving at low speeds in a neighborhood. on the highway i was able to shift the gears between neutral and drive and it finally re-engaged after several attempts. *jb
Brought my 2004 nissan murano in for alternator replacement due to factory recall on all 2003-2004 muranos. 3 days later i began to hear some very loud banging noises from the engine area. the murano was towed to nissan that weekend and on monday i was told that it was my transmission. apparently there was regular transmission fluid added to the cvt transmission. the mastria nissan service center will not take responsibility and they will not honor the drive train warranty. *jb
Vehicle would not accelerate, maximum speed = 20 mph. stopped shifted to low same result. parked turned engine off, returned 20 minutes later. vehicle ok, but check engine light is on. next day nissan service could not find a problem, said it was a "soft" code. *jb
2004 nissan murano sl 2wd model just came to a stop while driving, restarted the engine then put the car in drive and engine stalls out, tried this over & over again but it continues to stall. i immediately had the car towed to the dealer and three days later they informed me that the automatic transmission failed (only 25003 miles). the automatic transmission was replaced but no one at nissan ever told me what caused the failure or gave me any confidence that this problem will not occur again soon. this was my wife's car and just stopping without any warning on a busy freeway could have resulted in someone running into her being unaware that her car has broken down. unfortunately nissan doesn't make these cvt transmission so their mechanics i'm told do only removal & replacement (jatco makes the murano transmission). *jb
Had the alternator replaced on a recall - subsequent the vehicle stopped 3 times without warning in traffic - transmission not engaged and no power - rolled to stop on highway and battery is dead so cannot restart - returned to dealer twice and first said they had forgot to reflash the engine after the recall installation of the alternator - after that it stopped again in traffic without warning for the third time - returned to dealer and they said this time the alternator cable was loose - since i felt the vehicle unsafe to drive, i asked they contact nissan at least for a new alternator and was willing to try one last time - nissan service refused to help and then i considered the vehicle unsafe to drive - unfortunately i am able via our lease company to dispose of this vehicle and get another - please check your records because in my case, the problems started after the alternator change and it is very dangerous to stall unexpectedly in freeway traffic - all happened in first quarter 2006 - service details available if requested. *jb
Transmission for a 2004 nissan murano failed at 13,000 miles.
Transmission failure: starting as a clicking sound from the front, only noticeble when driving slowly and with open window and occuring when accelerating or decelerating and during light turns the dealer first misdiagnosed it as loose steering rack mounting bolts, referring to nissan bulletin ntbb03-065a. after fixing this, the clicking noise still was there and the technician finally diagnosed clicking noise in the cvt/ automatic transmission case. dealer acknoledges that transmission has to be replaced and schedules repair timeframe with 1 week. dealer will notify when parts have arrived.
Bought 2004 murano 31 jan 2005. drive vehicle to/from work each day, 740 per week. by may had put 12,000 miles on car. one day started my car, the service engine soon (ses) light came on and the car was sluggish. turned off the engine and back on, sluggishness diminished, light remained. took car to dealership, light went off just prior to bringing in. was told the light was because gas cap not on tight enough, so shop did an oil change. few weeks later, light came on again, brought to another shop. said it was problem with the throttle control system, that it would take days to get a part & they could not give loaner or rental. husband consulted owner of dealership who suggested repair team take the part off a 2004 car on the lot to fix mine immediately. over the next two months, the ses light came on 3 more times. the 1st time was told it was just "old codes. 2nd time, cleared codes and told me not to worry about ses light. car would not pass inspection with ses light on, so when it came on 3rd time day before inspection, returned to the dealer and was told the throttle control needed "adjusting". got the car inspected. 6 days later, ses light came on again when leaving work to drive 74 miles home, sluggishness that prompted first throttle repair returned. could not reach or maintain speed of the flow of traffic. car at shop since 05 aug 2005 because of "problem" with throttle control in series of 2004 muranos that mine came from. there''s a new part needed, my volume of driving made it appear. technical bulletin or notice to consumers needed. when folks hit 13,000 miles problem will appear and part will be on order (there are many vehicles with problem). was told part would ship from nissan 19 aug 2005 & might get my car back next week. dealer covering rental car. dangerous problem because the car will not "shift" (or cvt equivalent) & the car tacs out over 4000/will not accelerate without warning. *nm
Multiple problems - transmission leak & replacement; transfer case replacement; rotors out of round @8200 miles and cut; now brakes do not have easy stop (ie for in traffic) only middle pedal and hard stop but dealer says they are w/in spec but admit that spec is subjective to my truck vs "others"; elec cable to airbag twisted & replaced, ac not charged 2x (after engine dropped to replace tranny), truck does not start all the time (current problem). others -i'm sure there's just been too many to remember. basically dealer has touched every major component of my truck except the rear end. call to discuss details if needed. *ak
We bought a new 2004 murano end of october of this year - since then nothing but major problem. while driving along at 60-65 - 5 times the car has seemed to come out of gear and slowing us to a slow pace then no pace or power - fortunately we've been able to avoid an accident. we pull car over to the side of the road - turn car off then back on and no problems at least for awhile. we never know when it will come out of gear or downshift within seonds leaving us with no power - needless to say a very dangerous situation. dealer has attempted to find problem - even changing the tcm -(tansmission control module - whatever that is) they say until they can capture the codes - when problem occurrs - they don't know what's wrong. aside from this serious flaw - we love our murano - we just want it fixed. we'll drop it off again to the dealer tomoow for the 5th time - i feel they will be of little help - although they are trying. i'm not sure where we will turn next with this problem - i guess i could pursue lemon law but i really don't want to - i just want the car fixed and safe! i wanted to alert others in case this problem extends to other murano's as well. we have 2,000 miles on our murano and sacrificed greatly to purchase it - what a major dissappointment. we are life-long nissan drivers and we are good friends with the employees at our dealership. tim.*ak
