We have classified the 263 complaints from 2006 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I had to replace the radiator and the transmission. i spent $4,000 for repairs. nissan is appealing the class action law suit. i am upside down on this vehicle. i need to get ride of it, now the motor whines?? *tr
I and my 6 year old son were driving on the freeway and the car started jerking on the freeway. i started to change lanes and almost was rear ended because of jerking and the non response of the transmission. this could have been very dangerous for my son and my self. *tr
Slowed down while someone turned and the car sped up an almost hit the car turning. then the car started accelerating and slowing down on its own. the car now jerks into gear and speeds up and slows down by itself. i have refused to drive the car and from everything i have read nissan refuses to do anything but charge $3,500-$4,500 for a new transmission even though it is the same transmission that does not last 60,000 miles in some cars. this is a very dangerous car and needs to be recalled to fix the obvious defect in the transmission. *tr
In august of 2012 i was in my 2006 nissan maxima on my way home from work when i was in traffic during rush hour when i was waiting at the traffic light, with cars behind me when my car stopped and wouldn't start or move ,the transmission had gone up a few months prior i took my car to nissan to get a diagnostic they reported not only did i need a brand new transmission at a sum of $3500 but also a meter control amp which controls the drivers dashboard ,i make car payments on this car still ,i've been driving a car rental since nov 2012 i can't afford it i need transportation,i have to get to work.i'm so frustrated i just found out yesterday that there is a class action lawsuit with nissan north america due to these damage transmissions they sold the public ,i so desperately in need of help i need my car fixed . *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle began to jerk and lunged forward independently. the contact performed online research and determined that there was a transmission failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 104,000.
2006 nissan maxima. consumer writes in regards to problem with transmission shifting hard. *tgw the consumer stated, the vehicle shifted so hard, it felt as though, the transmission had fallen out of the vehicle. the consumer spoke to a mechanic at the dealership, and he stated it was most likely the valve body within the transmission. the consumer was informed nissan used a valve body made of aluminum from 2000-2006, that would not hold up in heat and would cause the transmission to slam into gear.

When driving my vehicle, i fill a jerking and shifting hard in 1st and 2nd gear like a mule is kicking me in the rear it goes on for days and when i slow down about to come to a stop it also kicks and jerks real bad and sometimes it just wont go at all. after i let the car sit for a min and shift from park to drive it hesitates for at least 7 to 10 secs and jumps real bad and goes into drive. i took it to my local nissan dealer and they couldn't find any thing wrong with the transmission;however, they said i need to get my transmission flush for $400. but they did charge me for the diagnostics test which cost $89. even though i paid to get my transmission flush at my mechanic shop a lot cheaper according to nissan, the problem is still going on. what should a person do. i have kept up all the maintenance on this vehicle, i am really scared that it my affect my motor mounts with this jerking. *tr
Mine started with a little kick and it just kept on getting worse to the point where it could cause whiplash... and this is during acceleration and while slowing down too. the transmission finally gave out! *tr
While driving my maxima started to with a little kick going into 2nd gear..now there is a major kick when giving it gas or going to reverse..anything in reverse 1st 2nd or 3rd gear has a hard kick..there are alot to other customers with same problem and nissan wont help there needs to be a recall. *tr
I have a 2006 nissan maxima, i bought it used in 2011, about 6 months after the transmission starting small jerking when putting in reverse or drive. then in january 2013 it started slipping in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd gears, i have also had the rpms rev up high and when the transmission finally engages it jerks so hard it feels like everything under the car is going to fall out! i have found out that i am looking at $3500 to repair and it would be a used transmission that is going to produce the same problems as my current one. i feel nissan motor co should step up to the plate and take care of this problem!!! *tr
My car shifts hard between 1 and 2 gear. got new motor mounts thinking this is the problem no such luck still shifting hard. *tr
Transmission began to slip in 2nd and 3rd gears marked by engine rpm spikes then hard shifts into gear in both up and down shifts. fuel mileage as a result dropped approximately 2 mpg due to surging engine rpm. additional problems were marked by a violent continual vibration at cruising speeds under light acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears. *tr
Transmission hesitation when attempting to enter traffic or advance when moving slowly, like what occurs when a traffic light changes when you are approaching it. the engine will rev (rpm approx 4000-6000) then slam into gear and jerk forward. this causes the danger of being propelled into traffic at the wrong time or simply getting rear-ended. my vehicle also has the problem of hesitating when i place the gear shift lever into reverse. research has shown this is a common problem with this generation nissan maxima and they have failed to take ownership and correct it. *tr
I was going through a stop sign, and after i stopped, i pressed the gas only to see the rpms shoot up without the vehicle moving for five seconds, then the car finally kicked into gear. this is very unsafe and this is not the first incident. *tr
Transmission starts to slip from first to second when it gets warmed up. i was reading online that nissan made a defective transmission and is refucing to take responsability for there mistakes. *tt
I got into the car then i stared up the car. then i put the car in drive and when i begin to drive the car it started to jerk. after a while of driving the car i would stop at a light then i would get off of the brake to give it gas and the car would not move. *tr
When is moving and going to stop in a traffic light is very hard the shift and sleeping the transmission. p.d. when i felt this issues was since 01/06/2012 and still more notable at current time.
The past 4 months my nissan has been jerking when i am at slow speeds. it feels like the transmission is slipping when it is in lower gears. it is very unpredictable surging forward at random times. i feel like any moment it is going to cause an accident or quit all together. i am going to schedule an appointment with nissan dealer this week, but i did research prior and noticed numerous reports on this same issue. including a current class action law suit. i do not have 3500 to replace the transmission if this was due to the error on behalf of nissan. please help. *tr
We have a 2006 nissan maxima. we bought it used in jan 2012. by june 2013, we noticed transmission issues. when accelerating, it hesitates and then bangs into gear. when parking it hesitates and bangs into reverse and drive. the radiator is also having issues. i am afraid to drive it more than 10 miles at a time. this seems like a massive issue with several nissan models from 2004-2006. let's hope nissan accepts their faulty equipment and does what is right to help everyone get it fixed. many people do not have the money for repairs and/or are upside down in loan. *tr
I brought my maxima from a dealer on february 6, 2012 beginning at 61587miles the transmission has stopped engaging properly when accelerating between 1st & 2nd gear of the automatic transmission. this occurs between 20 and 35mph and causes the vehicle to slam into gear with a force that negatively impacts the my ability to control the car causing an unsafe driving event. it is as powerful as being hit from the rear while driving. it will drive fine for a few miles and start lurching again. the vehicle would jerk violently before stalling. after researching the issues i was having with this car, i found that it is common in 2005 and 2006 maxima and nissan has not recalled these models for these issues. *tr
Car has a serious transmission issue and it seems like this is a common problem with 2006 maximas. in lower gears and in reverse, car lurches violently and slips. when accelerating, car revs very fast, but gets no power. this is starting to happen more and more and i have been told i need a new transmission. this vehicle was bought new in 2006 and should not have transmission issues at 90k miles. given the multitude of complaints about this exact problem on various automobile forums, nissan should take steps to fix this problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact attempted to accelerate but the vehicle became hesitant. the vehicle would also jerk forward while decelerating. the failure recurred at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician advised the contact that the transmission would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Delayed shifts. hard shift from 1st to 3rd gears. hard down shifts. *tr
The transmission jerks when it shifts from first couple gears.it seems that nissan new of the problem , but never tuck any action on fixing it. it started with 04 models and keeps on happening . if i had known that nissan modes had such problems i would have never bought the car. now it cost 3000$-4000$ to fix the problem. *tr
Every time i put car in gear it jumps and feels like car falling apart. as i am driving and get up to 50 miles per hour the car will jerk. i have replaced motor mounts, had transmission flushes, transmission fluid changes, new tires and car still jerks and tranny and gear shafts are faulty. the entire body of car feels like it's coming apart. *tr
Transmission has acted up and gotten stuck in 5th gear since i bought the car. it is very slow to take off from a stop when this happens and does not drive well at all. it also slams in and out of first and second gear before getting stuck in 5th. *tr
Purchased my 2006 nissan maxima in july of 2006 had 12,750 miles on the odometer i have keep this vehicle serviced on a regular basis for the past six years. on may 6, 2012 while pulling out of a parking spot i put the car in reverse and it didn't move a few seconds later there was a loud thump and it jerked into gear so hard i thought someone had reared ended me. from this moment on when i would put it in gear it hesitates and then after i've driven for a while it starts jerking and seems to lose power. i'm afraid that it is going to stop in the middle of traffic or cause me to have a accident. i was due for an oil change in july so i told the service writer that i was having this problem and that i was feeling something funny under my car, the mechanic test drove my car and i was advised that i needed a serpentine belt i paid 159.99 plus tax to have the serpentine belt replace along with my oil change. after i picked my car up and drove it for a while the jerking and hesitating presisted thats when a friend advised me that it was my transmission and i should have it checked. i contacted glenn nissan sevice department and asked if there was a recall on the 2006 transmissions and was told there was no recall i asked the service writer if i had to have a trasmission how much would it cost they have not returned my call as of today. that's when i went online to check and see if there was a problem and saw the same complaints from other nissan owners. i took my car to a transmission shop on 8/06/2012 and it was diagnosed that i would need a transmission and the cost be around of $4500.00 plus. my next step is to contact nissan maufacturer to see if they can resolve this issue with the 2006 transmissions before someone gets hurt and or killed. *tr
Transmission slipped while in traffic on the freeway, the engine revved up then the transmission slipped back into gear, jerking the car forward and nearly rear ending the car in front of me. this occurred several times in subsequent days until i had the transmission replaced. *tr
The vehicle is violently jerking and switching between gears while slowing down or going down hill. *tr
I purchased a 2006 nissan maxima 2 in 2009 with 35,000 miles. at 75,000 miles i began to notice that the vehicle would occasional jerk with changing lower gears (20-30 mph) and that it would violently down shift when slowing down for a stop. these actions only occur after the vehicle has been driven for 20 minutes or more. the dealerships say that it is the transmission and that it will cost $4,000 to replace. the vehicle has 80,000 miles at this point and that is not enough miles to warrant a new transmission. in researching the internet i have discovered that this is a common theme with the 2006 nissan maxima . this issues present safety issues and should be recalled by nissan. *tr
This is a transmission issue, but 'transmission' wasn't listed as a choice so i chose 'power train'. i was accelerating on an interstate onramp, preparing to enter the interstate highway. while accelerating, i noticed the car ahead of me was not accelerating at the same rate so i let off the gas to slow down. the car ahead then sped up, so i attempted to assume accelerating to enter the highway. at that point the engine quickly revved up as though i were in neutral. that lasted for a brief moment, then suddenly the transmission slammed into gear with such force that the front tires lost traction and the car lurched hard to the left. my reaction was to adjust quickly to the right, to prevent cutting across busy lanes. i left the roadway to the right, fortunately no collision with anything except a curb. skidded to a stop there in the grassy area right of the highway. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle became resistant to acceleration attempts. in addition, the contact was unable to shift into any gear. there were several warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel when the failure occurred. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 108,000.
I was driving my vehicle to work and i stopped at a red light. when the light turned green i pressed on the gas and the car rpm went up but my car did not moved. about 10 seconds later it jerk really hard into gear and moved. i got scared because cars were in front of me and i didn't know if my car was going to run right in the back of another vehicle. i bought the car from the waldorf, md nissan dealership. when i was purchasing this car my main concern was safety. i was pregnant and i had two other small children that i transport back and forth from school. now i don't even feel safe to have my children in my car. i was told that i needed to replace the throttle bottle in my car or better yet get another transmission due to nissan building these cars poorly. one i am a single working parent trying to provide for my family. and now i am stuck with a car that has known transmission issues. i know that nissan is aware of the situation and this is very unprofessional for them not to fix the problem. what if one of my children where hurt due to the car jerking or down shifting when it isn't suppose to. what if myself or someone else lost their life due to nissan not wanting to fix the issue that so many people have complained about. i pray that someone at nissan will own up to this and fix this issue before someone gets hurt. and if it takes myself and others to keep calling or to go to the dealership and complain or better yet call the local news and have them cover a story because no one would like to see a mother or her children get hurt by a poor built vehicle!!!! *tr
My car began shifting (abruptly and hard) when slowing down or stopping i'd say maybe 2nd to 3rd gear. it was dissatisfied to know after online research that this is an ongoing issue and nissan will have no part in resolving the problem. not happy!! so now i must replace the valve body from what i've found because it's not the tranny just "the brains" for the tranny. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle violently jerked when shifting gears at any speed. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000. updated 7/12/12 *cn updated 08/08/12
Issues with the transmission surging and then a hard jerk or gear shift.took it to the shop, and before checking, the shop owner was familiar with the issue because mine was the 4th '06 maxima that had been brought in that week with the same problems. i have a black car thats 6 years old and the paint has faded almost to white on the roof of my car. *tr
This vehicle is very unsafe. the transmission will jerk the car at any given time, which increases the chances of an accident. this is the only issue i am having with this car. this may be only one issue however it is a very expensive one. the certified nissan dealership said that it would cost around four thousand dollars for this to be corrected including parts and labor. there needs to be an recall on this vehicle right away. *js
I bought a 2003 nissan maxima se from a used car dealer with roughly 36,000 miles on it in 2006 march. the car ran great for a while, but right around when it hit about 65,000 miles it started having problems with the transmission. initially, the problem would only surface when i put my car from reverse to drive, and the car would lurch forward violently. i took it to the dealer who said that 2003-2006 nissan maxima's were known to have an issue with the transmission, but said it is not covered by any recall and would not be covered by a warranty as my car was beyond the 5 yr coverage period. the car now has 94,000 miles on it and the transmission problem is getting progressively worse. the car transmission slips intermittently which leads to problems with acceleration or maintaining speed and is a serious safety issue and due to this reason i avoid driving on freeways. *tr
I am having a problem with my car jerking profusely when switching gears. it will do this as well when i come to a stop and then take off. there is something definitely wrong with this make/model/year vehicle. i love my car but after seeing throughout the internet alot of people having the exact same problem, i do not believe my next purchase will be a nissan. the manufacturer should be recalling and fixing this issue. maybe families that have lost loved ones while driving this vehicle should investigate the cause of accident a little further. *tr
The car has hesitated to reach the next gear. there is an obvious jerk getting into gear. on a few instances when shifting into reverse there was a very hard jerk and loud noise. this occurred with my kids in the car which was scary. the car has shifted hard while in traffic and has taken a while to pick up speed to the next gear. *tr
For about the last 15-20k miles my transmission has been slipping and causing my car to jerk at different times throughout my daily drive. my transmission finally quit working while trying to ascend a small hill my parking garage. the transmission started smoking and finally stopped working all together. i had to have the car towed and the repairs are quoted at a minimum for $1600. of course this repair is not covered under warranty. it makes no sense that are car with barely 100k miles should have transmission problems. *tr
I drove to work which is about 10 miles from my residence, parked to retrieve some paprework then returned to my vehicle. i started my vehicle and placed the transmission in drive, with my foot on the brakes as required while changing gears.there was a big time delay before the transmission engaged into the drive position.there also was a loud and very hard "bang" causing me to be forced rearward in the seat and the vehicle jumped forward, as if there was not a foot on the brakes. at this point the vehicle is engaged in the drive position. i spoke to a representative at the dealership where i bought the vehicle new in april of 2006,all they had to say is i must pay $109 for a diagnosis of the problem and hopefully they could duplicate it. i also spoke to nissan america consumer hotline and they also said that i must have it dealt with through the dealer, and they will see what they could do .at the time of this entry, the vehicle has 55000 mile exact. i have been on numerous site online and saw compliants about the same problem, with the transmission as a known fault. transmissions from nissan between the years of 2004 to 2007.all the complainants states they have not gotten any solution from nissan america. *tr
Car began to jerk forward in traffic, and upon going uphill would lose power, due to transmission jerking at speeds 35mph and up, rpm would redline at 55mph on freeway, which would cause traffic behind me to gain distance, leaving me no power to move or avoid them. would jerk from reverse to drive out of driveway. transmission sensors and trasmission were replaced total $3900.00
Automatic transmission replaced. *tr
When i first bought the car it was working fine but just two days after the car started to jerk hard the mph would go all the way to the last number like it was reving up took it back to the dealer ship they took it to one of there mechanics and told them that the transmission would had to be replace and ford wouldnt pay for it not one penny are even half i put down 5000 for the car at they could of paid half are gave us a new car i have two kids with me in the car every day am just scared it my stale when am on the freeway. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the transmission would slip out of gear and exhibit a loud thumping sound. in addition, the vehicle would jerk when the transmission was switching gears. the contact stated that the failure mainly occurred in first and second gear but also in third and forth. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and had the transmission fluid flushed but to no avail. the contact also had the transmission control module replaced but the failure was not corrected. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was 138,000.
My car was bought at a nissan dealership in 2011 of december, in january i noticed the car jerking and shifting while driving 20 to 30 miles. so i took the car back at the dealership and they said that they will only give me another car only if the problem is in the transmission, they told me that the problem is my motor mount is broken, and they don't cover anything outside the transmission or engine only the inside.. the total amount to fix was 500 but i had no money to do it.they gave me an option of taking an extended warranty which it was expensive for me so i shopped for a warranty and i got a full bumper to bumper for a cheaper price than what they gave me. it took me 3months to go back to the dealer with a new warranty they fixed the motor mount but the issue is still their. a nissan technician took it for a test drive they suggested that i need a new transmission and there's no way i'm willing to give them my car again to fix because it took them along time to realize the problem telling me to fix your car we need to get it out of idle and emission needs to be checked that's what they were saying before they realize its a transmission..i love nissan maxima but in order to keep a customer like me to stay loyal please fix the issue and do the right thing by recalling the vehicles. *tr
2006 nissan maxima. consumer writes in regards to transmission failure. *smd the consumer was also informed the engine would soon fail as well.
Immediately after purchase, various instances of electrical malfunction, including mirror lights flickering, dash lights flickering/half doesn't come one, as well as faulty wiring in sun roof causing it to open and closes randomly on it's own. shortly thereafter, transmission started to slip and knock hard into gears, even though proper maintenance was always completed. brakes replaced several times. suspension lacking. as of last week, the traction/slip lights come on and the car will not accelerate properly, almost causing several accidents. this problem has yet to be resolved, as no one seems to know what the problem is. this vehicle has caused financial harm as well as near physical harm on several occasions. *tr
