We have classified the 263 complaints from 2006 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Car was purchased with bad transmission not knowing that jerking was so bad it felt like a rear end collision had occured. had it replaced and now its starting to happen for a second time since owning the car. car will jerk at 20mph and 40mph. the car also accelerates forward when going down hills. car is a safety hazard waiting to kill myself or others because i just don't know wht will happen. sad to see nissan does not stand behind fixing the unsafe transmissions for thosands of people. i will never buy another nissan and hope that no one gets killed before all the effected cars are off the road. sad to think that nissan doesn't stand behind their cars and safety of the owners.an owner of a car that is less than 10yrs old shouldn't have to buy two transmissions in 4 yrs of ownership. sorry i ever bought this car and definitely let my opinion be heard when others look to buy a nissan product. i am scared to sell my cr because i feel it is dangerous and has been nohing but a maintenance mobile with continuous stress and fear of what will happen next.
Transmission slips and jerks.
There are serious jerks while driving on a busy road when the automatic transmission switches gears. happens worst on 2nd gear and 3rd and eventually reduces. this is a major problem and starting happening only after dealer services the transmission at 60k miles. the car is now on 70k and went to dealer once again.. after spending anther $400, i see no result. vehicle is still moving but can cause serious issues anytime. replacing transmissions is probably another $3500. it makes no sense until nissan comes forward to handle this. the car has barely reached 70k.
While driving on the interstate a slowed from the cruising speed for traffic. upon my attempt to accelerate the engine revved to a high rpm before the transmission engaged causing a hard shift that seemed to torque the engine and car to the side causing a short loss of control of the vehicle at highway speed. since then, i have had numerous incidents when accelerating from a stop light or stop sign when the the car will just lose power until the transmission jolts into gear.mas it loses power thee have been time when cars behind me almost rammed the back of my vehicle.
In a busy shopping mall parking lot vehicle hesitated and jerked when backing out of a parking space. had to push accelerator down much harder than usual to get the car to back up creating an unsafe condition for any people or vehicles that may have been behind the vehicle, same condition also occurs at times when going from reverse to drive (hesitation and jerking).
Over a period of about three weeks, the transmission on this car went from occasional rough shifting to being stuck in 5th gear all the time. the car would "reset" with the ignition turned off, than the car restarted, but that too failed to work after about a week. the situation now has the car un-drivable. nissan claims the transmission is totally failed, and an independent repair shop agreed. the car will still do one normal shift cycle when it is cool, but than remains in fifth gear after that.
excessive/harsh transmission shift 1st, 2nd and 2nd to 1st, problem gets worse after vehicle heats up. repairs range from $3,000 and up. vehicle was inspected by nissan dealership on june 2,2015, i was advised that without repair could cause additional damage. i am afraid that this will cause an accident.
I've been the only owner of my car which i bought brand new. i've always gone the extra mile to take extremely good care of my car and have never missed any scheduled maintenance. however, none of this mattered much when my car started jerking very violently around 90k miles. it happened when shifting from part to drive or reverse and even while driving, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. i took the car to many different transmission shops and eventually it turned out that it had a bad transmission. i spent thousands in getting this fixed. i know for a fact that nissan is aware of this issue with this cars but refuses to take action, instead they want to charge the customer thousands of dollars for a new transmission. they are so aware of this issue that they even have created an updated transmission for this car which is the one that they will put in if you go to them with this issue. it's sad to see that no one is doing anything to get nissan to do the right thing and recall this faulty vehicles despite the ridiculously high number of complaints. it appears as though people have to die first before anyone takes notice. you can read all about this well know issue in this forum link: http://maxima.org/forums/6th-generation-maxima-2004-2008/597683-re5f22a-transmission-fix-38.html to nissan: you think that you are saving money by not recalling these bad transmissions and indeed you are, but only in the short term. long term though you will loose greatly because those that used to call themselves loyal customers such as myself will never buy another vehicle from you ever again. not only that but i will take every opportunity to tell everyone i can not to buy from you. your organization is cunning and deceitful and only cares about the bottom line.
The car's transmission slipped, the rpm''s went up and then the car slammed into gear.
Transmission went at 121000 miles now a year later slipping again
It started hard shifting and jerking in the beginning and then it would level out. after awhile it wouldn't go in gear. took it to get it checked and was told that the transmission needed to be replaced at the cost of $3000 or more. i have friends and family the have had this same issue, with so many people having this issue why has nissan not issued a recall. they pride themselves in selling reliable and quality products this is not so. *tr
My 2006 nissan maxima 3.5sl has a transmission that's going out it slips and slams into gear all the time only 110,000 miles.
In heavy traffic, at low speed, car began to rev high when trying to accelerate. had to have the valve body replaced for $1300.00. car has 55,000 miles on it. *js
Transmission started shifting hard and occasionally revving before going into gear when starting out or backing up. we had the fluid changed and added lucas transmission fix. this seemed to fix the issue for 3 months or so then it started again. going to have the transmission checked at a local specialist shop. with so many people having this issue why has nissan not issued a recall. they pride themselves in selling reliable and quality products this is not so. *tr
I was driving my car, doing approximately 35mph,when the engine revved and the car bucked. i had my transmission fluid checked, and added what needed to be added, figuring that's what the problem was. it wasn't. the car has continued to do this for the last 3 months, and today the transmission went on the car. i bought the car in 2013 with 88,000 miles on it and no warranty. it is now 2015,and the car has just above 100,000 miles. *tr
Hard shift when transmission is hot. *tr
Pulling away from a stoplight, the transmission jerked violently from 1st to 2nd gear of the automatic transmission. the vehicle went into "limp mode" only going to 20 miles per hour on a very busy street with no turn off. car was towed, and new transmission needed. nissan will not take responsibility for the repair. *tr
I had my valve body replaced due to hard shifting and a delay in transmission engagement when shifting from park to drive. vehicle is start to exhibit same symptoms and i was informed the transmission would need to be replaced at the cost of $2,500 vehicle had 148,000 miles on it. nissan should be held responsible for its inferior quality and workmanship. *tr
The car started to jerk and the transmission started to slip. car will not move now. it slams into gear. *tr
While driving on the interstate, i had cruise control set at 80mph. there was a stalling/jerking motion that took place. after looking over the instrument panel. i notice it was still on cruise control but the mph had dropped a few miles. once cruise control was disengaged, i noticed the difference in acceleration. it felt like my car was stuck in third or forth gear. i had to hold pedal to the floor and wait as it picked up speed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that there was a delay when he attempted to switch the gear from reverse to drive. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the technician diagnosed that the valve body from the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
Transmission started slipping and jerking while trying to accelerate. first occured on a busy 4 lane bypass. we were barely able to get it pulled off of the highway the problem was so bad. *tr
Tl ' the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the transmission failed and the engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. a mechanic stated that the transmission failure was due to the valve body. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 88,000. jcc
Transmission defect. i am experiencing a problem with my 2006 nissan maxima. the transmission in my car is slipping. when i am driving many times the acceleration increases the rpm above 3, before it changes gears. also sometimes when taking off there is a very hard kick before you take off. there are other internet postings with the same issues that i have. based on the internet research, this seems to be a common problem with this year and model. why isn't the nissan corporation being held responsible for their actions? *tr
During upshifts and down shifts the car is very harsh. slams into gear making acceleration and de-celebration unpredictable. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked when shifting gears. in addition, the contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle accelerated excessively. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The vehicle shifts gears in a very rough jerking motion. i have experience late gear engagement, which have resulted in multiple near collision accidents. jerking also occurs when changing from reverse into drive. when pressing down on gas during highway travel, the rpm's raise and then a few seconds later the car will jerk into gear and then the speed will increase. *tr
After reading multiple reviews, it looks like my car is having the same issues. i am driving down the road and the freeways and suddenly my car would shut down. on the freeway. with 2 babies in the car. i have taken my car in multiple times and nothing seems to fix the issues. in addition, my car jerks multiple times and wont kick into gear while driving and then all of a sudden my "check engine light comes on". *tr
Same issue as another "transmission defect. i am experiencing a problem with my 2006 nissan maxima. the transmission in my car is slipping. when i am driving many times the acceleration increases the rpm above 3, before it changes. there are other internet postings with the same issues that i have. based on the internet research, this seems to be a common problem with this year and model. why isn't the nissan corporation being held responsible for their actions?" *tr
transmission started slipping between 2nd and 3rd gears and very high rpm occurred at same time. needed an entire transmission overhaul. warranty good for 60 months or 60,000 miles. transmission gave out at 57000 miles but car was purchased 7-18-06, so it is past the 60 months. nissan taking no responsibility whatsoever, despite numerous transmission problems of nissan owners. paid over $3000 to fix transmission. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 5 mph, the gear shifter was switched and the vehicle jerked forward without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 72,000. updated 01/13/15*lj
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph and approaching a stop, transmission shifted hard. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing belt and the tensioner needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 65,800.
My 2006 nissan maxima began hard shifting while driving, reversing, and shifting into drive. i took it in to have it serviced over the summer and the nissan dealership recommended a transmission flush and said nothing was wrong. of course that did not fix anything. the problem has gotten progressively worse to the point where it can take up to 5 seconds for the car to shift into gear when i am putting it into drive. i contacted the nissan corporation and they advised me to go to the dealership and have it diagnosed. well of course now the dealership says we need to have the transmission replaced...to the tune of $3,000. when i contacted the nissan corporation they informed me there was nothing they could do to help me and that my car didn't fall within the parameters of the cvt transmission extended warranty. so not only are we out $150 for a diagnosis that we already knew what the problem was, but now we have to get the vehicle repaired or it won't be safe to drive. we have owned two nissans and the previous one was a 1996 maxima that never gave us any problems. i wish i had that car back and not this "upgraded" model. i use to think that nissan was a company that stood by its customers and strived for satisfaction, but i now know that is not the case. will nhtsa ever look into these complaints and force nissan's hand as far as this transmission issue goes? there needs to be a safety recall, not just a bulletin. *tr
This car has had hardshifts, between 2-3 gears and horrible downshifts. nearly impossible to drive in stop and go traffic. many other people have these issues. flair shifts when coasting. slipping in and out of gears. please help! the car shifts erratically and this is due to a production issue with these transmissions. nissan knows of these problems and that's why they now use cvt transmissions. please issue a recall! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 30 mph, the transmission began to jerk violently and the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact also heard a constant rattling noise coming from the timing chain while driving various speeds. an independent mechanic recommended that the faulty timing chain be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
Slowed down to round a corner. transmission slips upon acceleration. *tr
My transmission slowly began to kick and jerk. after a while it got worse and worse. it has got me into many near accidents do to either jerking or failed to shift and accelerate. it now will not shift into gear at all, and is currently in the shop. i have seen many complaint about this issue with nissan, and think it is unacceptable that they do not recall these transmissions. *tr
My initial incident occurred sometime in december, after putting my vehicle in to gear (d) from park position it hesitated and then it felt as if my whole car jumped. i stepped on the gas to slowly accelerate and the cars engine revved up but the car did not move. it kind of scared me. it continued to do so on my drive home. it continues to do so off and on predominately when my car has had the opportunity to warm up. after doing some online research as to what could be causing the issue it seems that there are many complaints with this same matter. it is believed that the transmissions installed in nissan maximas are faulty and nissan refused to do anything about this issue. it is very hazards to be driving like this and it is a very costly fix for a problem that should not be happening this early on or at all with a vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while attempting to park, the vehicle accelerated independently. the vehicle was stopped by the contact applying the parking brake, depressing the brake pedal and powering off the vehicle simultaneously. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was informed that a spiral cable harness and the cruise control switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the incident. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle would lunge forward while the brakes were engaged. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the transmission was separating from the engine. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the manufacture was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 108,000.
Pulling out into traffic car accelerated forward and stopped .no gears not even reverse ,my wife and granddaughter were stuck in middle of 4lane with no way to go anywhere.nissan doesn't think they are liable .now i have to pay 2700 dollars for a transmission that has only 82000 miles on it. i have owned 4 nissans in past ,but no more. *tr
I bought the car with 81,000. soon after, the transmission in the car started giving me hickups now and then and now, it hard shift from third to fourth and sometimes 1 to 2nd. the car has now 89,000 and i'm very disappointed with this for. a car with less than 100k miles. *tr
Have taken the vehicle to the local nissan dealership several times to have issues diagnosed and they would state there is nothing wrong. first started with having low and dirty oil and making a weird noise even after it has been serviced. took the vehicle to a different place that the nissan dealership said we should go. their oil solution of royal purple synthetic oil did not work. talked to the place where the vehicle was bought and because the warranty was expired they were unwilling to help. the vehicle currently has almost 108000 miles on it and have only owned it a year. i am afraid to drive the vehicle because of the hard shifting when driving and the slamming of the head against the head rest. it will slam into second, third and even fourth gear once it gets warmed up and take several seconds for the vehicle to engage and adjust the speed. i experience jerking coming from the rear while driving and recently while going from speed limits of 45 to 30 i felt a lose of power like it did not want to go. while parked it also slams into reverse and the first. i have a young son and this vehicle is defiantly not safe for him to drive in. i was told to replace the solenoids, timing chains, and to put a kit in it for the shifting issues. i also need to get an alignment done to address the shaking when going over 55mph. at this point the motor mounts probably need to be replaced. i'm still making payments on this vehicle and all warranties are expired. the air bags are also malfunctioning and the lights blink on and off this will cost up to a $1000 to have fixed. the check engine light also comes off and on but no codes show up. the rpm gauge gets stuck at 3 and you have to go over 40mph to get that gauge to work. really don't want to have an accident because of the issues with the drive train and transmission. *tr
The car doesn't downshift properly (automatic 6 speed transmission). also it shifts very hard from reverse into first. while traveling down a hill, the car revs hard when you step on the gas at the bottom of the hill and slams into gear. car transmission also sometimes slips while accelerating. lots of forums with people complaining about the same issues. transmission repair facility said there is a service bulletin from nissan for this problem. *tr
Wife was driving vehicle down the interstate. engine revved and car lurched. she exited interstate and we took the vehicle to the dealership. replaced transmission under warranty. 2nd incident occurred coming off a mountain in east tennessee. transmission failed and had to ride brakes to flat land, over 3 miles. 2nd incident occurred
While in 3rd gear going into 4th, it would hesitate for a good 2 seconds then pop into 4th. it also started doing the same thing while going into reverse from drive and vice versa. i just think it's quite suspicious that these problems i've been having with this car just started happening within a couple thousand miles of my warranty ending. *tr
I was a proud owner of a 2006 maxima but now i am very disappointed. about two months ago, my car started jerking when switching gears, accelerating, parking, and slowing down. i went to nissan and they told me that my transmission had internal failures and needed to be replaced at $4200.00!!! my car only has 73,000 miles should not need a new transmission. i looked on the internet and discovered that there are thousands of people who have had the same issues and have filed a class action lawsuit against nissan because they know that their transmissions are messed up and they are trying not to own up to it. this is a safety concern because when it jerks violently or stalls, you lose control of the car which is very scary and terrifying. i will never buy another nissan again!!! *tr
I have a 2006 maxima with 78,000 miles. about 2 months ago the automatic transmission started jerking when shifting from gear 1 to gear 2. also jerking from reverse into drive. after stopping, the transmission does not engage and the rpms sky rocket until the gear engages. i have had the transmission serviced but the problem still continues. this is a major problem in heavy traffic where stopping and starting is required due to stop signs and lights. it could also result in another car rear-ending me because the transmission will not engage immediately when accelerating. *tr
After car has been driven for about 30 minutes the transmission slips and hesitates when shifting, especially into and out of 3rd gear. took it to the dealership and i didn't even have to tell them what was wrong, he asked me if my transmission was acting up. when i said yes he rattled off about 5 things people have been experiencing (hard shifting in reverse, hesitation in upshifting, etc) and i said yes to each one. without even looking at it he said it would be $4,000 for a new transmission because all of them have that problem. i contacted nissan about paying for it and they refused, twice. i've almost gotten into a handful of accidents because of this. switching lanes to pass someone on the highway and the transmission hesitates and sends the rpm's to 7000 and i almost get rear-ended, then when it does shift it jerks so hard the car swerves all over the road. it shifts so hard my engine mounts are broken and need replaced too. *tr
