Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2005 Nissan Maxima

This car has nothing but issues. i have had to replace the timing chains along with continuing to deal with the cars transmission and engine revving and trowing itself in and out of gear and dying the the middle of the road or highway. this car is dangerous and hundreds of people are having the exact same issues with nissan refusing to address the issue or admit fault. something needs to be done. im sure people have been physically hurt from this issue and seems strong enough to be made into a class action suit.

The 2005 nissan maxima has a terrible transmission. problems shifting gears and when trying to accelerate it wont shift out of gears to go faster. such as if i stop at a stop light or stop sign and then try to go again it accelerates very (5mph). also when shifting into drive, it does this loud banging jerk that jerks the entire car. was told transmission is slipping. there are thousands of other complaints for the nissian maxima transmission and needs to be a recall on the transmission. car is only 13 years old.

When driving the vehicle, the... cv transmission could slip out of gear causing loss of power. cv transmission could hesitate in shifting to next or previous gear. this can cause hard, violent shifting to occur which could seriously damage the vehicle and result in an accident.

Sudden surges and jolting when trying to park car even when the brake is depressed

Transmission failing delay in gear select followed by a hard thump hard shifting after 30min did not expect this from a car with 108k miles well taken care of.

Car would stay in 5th gear when turned. it would move but at slow rate. now it will move about a 100 feet then gear wont engage. you can give it gas but it just wont move. ill let it cool down and it move again but will resume problem.

Transmission failed.

Sudden total transmission failure at 45,699 miles on maxima 2005. put car in reverse, backed out put in drive it stalled out. car did not want to start, i was in middle of street. car has never ever given me issues prior. sudden "service engine" light, (never illuminated before. put accelerator to floor to start then car would barely move forward, it had no 1, 2nd gears. drove it out of middle of street. took forever to get to 20mph. parked car, started easier in the morning but made horrible clunk when put in reverse. it is now at repair shop and not sure of full diagnosis yet but told will probably bee a full transmission rebuild.

Harsh shifting, jerking, lots shift slippage. actually slowed down on the highway. diagnosis returned as failed transmission assembly and cost $4,100 to repair.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle drove roughly when the accelerator pedal was depressed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. while driving on an incline or bumpy road, the vehicle would shake. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the control arm and ball joints on the front driver and passenger sides were recently replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Vehicle is shifting extremely hard in lower gear and at stopping

The car is over winding and sounds like the transmission is slipping. there is a significant spike in the rpms before it shifts between gear to gear. it's only got 98k and it's meticulously maintained. it's been happening for about a thousand miles.

My transmission just failed for the second time after being replaced the first time by nissan as it was under warranty. it was regularly flushed/ serviced. there is a major issue with the transmission itself and nissan must do something about it.

Transmission bangs into gear. winds up then slams into gear and accelerates up immediately. i almost hit another car. this happened while going 40 mph.

I bought a nissan maxima 2005 from a second hand and looks great but one riding the transmission started to make a uful noise. once i got home i turned of the engine. the next day when i start the engine and shifted to drive the wouldn't move. the mechanic told me that i have to buy a new transmission that it's to expensive. i hope you could help me. thank you

Around 103000 miles the transmission started slipping when accelerating from a stop. the engine would rev and then the transmission would slam into gear. i had a fluid change done and now not only does it slip on acceleration it also slams when shifting between gears.

Hard shifting from transmission when coming to a stop. slippage of gears when in a stationary position in park going into drive (takes about 5 seconds)

My car has given me trouble since about a month after i bought it. i bought it used, but have been told nissans are very reliable vehicles even with high mileage. it will not excel forward at any speed until it gets up to 40mph after stopping at a light or stop sign. it is a disaster in waiting. i drive early in the morning and at night for work. i am afraid someone is going to plow into me because i am not moving fast enough. the transmission jerks bad enough to jerk my head back whenever i put it in reverse. i am afraid to drive it anymore! this has been ongoing for more than a year. i quit driving it a few weeks ago due to the jerking of the transmission when i put it into reverse. the date below is the last day i drove it.

At a red light, car stalled, took a few seconds to restart. when trying to accelerate, it revs like it has a strain; not going anywhere fast, until it gets to 40 mph. this has happened several times. we have changed the fuel pump, alternator, and battery. each time we changed a part, the car would be fine for a few months. i am afraid when this happens that someone is going to plow into me because they can't stop in time as my car is going too slow. my husband seems to think it's not as much the transmission as maybe something electrical. nissan should be responsible for this seeing as there are so many complaints about the same thing. someone is going to be killed or probably already has, but no one can tell what the cause of the accident if the driver is dead! i love the car and would buy another nissan, but i will research them first! i am glad to see it is not my imagination about the car jumping while accelerating. it seems to only do it when i am driving, but it stops jumping when i take my foot off the accelerator.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle hesitated, jerked, and made a loud abnormal noise. the vehicle felt as if it would stall without warning. the dealer diagnosed that the transmission was slipping and needed to be rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 124,000.

While driving my 2005 nissan maxima the gears slip and jump into gear with a violent jerk that is affecting my driving and may cause me to lose control of the car and possible injury myself or others. there is a transmission issue with the valve body that is causing this violent shifting and it seems that i am not the only one that has this issue. it is disgrace that the nhtsa had done nothing to address this wide spread issue, must people die first so it does get addressed. i will also contact my state representative to report the issue. i opened up a case with nissan consumer affairs with no luck or admittance of their failed component. nissan dealership diagnosed transmission with a p0726 code and had an open technical bulletin ntb11'035 which is acknowledgement of nissans failed design of the transmission valve body. nissan has quoted me over $2500 to repair their failed design component.

Harsh engagement at reverse and forward gears. erratic shifting. after start up the transmission has a harsh engagement in reverse and forward. when driving there is a harsh up shift and down shift. driving on city or highway the transmission is doing the same of harsh upshifting and downshifting. harsh engagement. the valve body has been replaced. we have installed new (dealer) cam sensors. we have had it reprogrammed. we have rebuilt the unit and still have the same problem. *tr

Driving home with car on cruise control and vehicle on its on accord revved the rpms over 5000 and then we heard a metal clinking and listed all power.

Transmission not changing gears and speedometer not working. slow acceleration, seems like it is starting out in a higher gear.

Transmission violently jerks when going 1st to 2nd gear and while driving at any speed. i was teaching my grandaughter to drive and it scared jer to death when it happened to her while driving. there has been hundreds, if not thousands of transmission complaints with this car online and issue has not been addressed by manufacturer or nhtsa. this car only has 80,000 miles, will never buy a nissan again.

Transmission problems

Nissan asked me to pay a diagnostic fee of 190$ and then they say entire transmission to be replaced nissan consumer affairs is not helpful as well worst company

Tamara inflators seat belts didn't lock or light did not come on. smashed body all the way to back seat bottom to ground. engine was idling very high felt/sound as if we were going 60 but only was going 40. no air bags came on. brakes grinding. back window blew out and tires flat in back.. windows slow on drivers side. when the sheriff tahoe hit us at 80mph on u.s. 40 greenfield in was in the shop at j&m truck an trailer on the west side of indianapolis having the oil leaked fixed and tires all fixed and rotors and lights by [xxx] a couple months prior. i had my little girl in the back seat as well where sheriff hit and ran. i uploaded a before and after picture. vin#[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Nissan maxima 2005 automatic transmission is suffering and will and could cause an deadly accident. after initial start up the car drives fine then a few minute down the road the transmission drives as if it is stuck in a tall gear. if you place into lower gear the gear violently shifts. also the car shuts off while lights and other electronic components are operational while normally driving without warning.

The car turned 100000 miles and the transmission began to shift hard when accelerating and decelerating. the transmission would also slip when going down the road at travel speed,

I thinks many have the same issues with me, transmission had some issues. also abs started when it is not supposed. maxima need to be recalled.

Car experienced difficulty in shifting. it caused dangerous driving conditions.

The transmission is slipping and jerking when accelerating or stopping. the car only has 84000 miles on it. this began arounds 70000. the jerking is so bad i am afraid my little kids will get whip lash. this is a known problem on many forums and nissan refuses to take car of the defective transmissions. this issue almost got my family into an aident as trying to go onto the highway on the on ramp the car began to slip during acceleration cause me to almost be rearended.

Transmission failure at 60k miles. stuck in 5th gear. slamming, jerking, hard downshifts. no reverse power. very hard shifting between gears. also paint peeling off entire car. car purchased for over 30k. vehicle was stationary and on street. problem is constant upon car reaching operating temp.

Got the car a year ago from carmax. had the car for less than 30 days before the transmission gave out. the mileage was right around 52,000 miles. they took it back, fixed it and it was fine. now here i am again less than a year later i'm having the same exact issue. jerking really hard in between gears, rpm would red line before it would finally switch gears. now this time the transmission completely gave out on me in the middle of a busy intersection! when i stepped on the gas, the car made a noise as if the power was failing, and sure enough it did. the car cut off on me. contacted carmax again to see if i had an extended warranty. but this will be the second time i've got the car fixed for the same issue. now i have around 80,000 miles on this car.

For months now, our 2005 nissan maxima has experienced a transmission problem. it shifts roughly in low gears (while the vehicle is in motion), both when accelerating and decelerating. it also shifts roughly when moving from park to either drive or reverse, and from drive/reverse to park. a specific incident happened when we were driving down a slight decline, and the vehicle downshifted roughly. this caused us to momentarily lose control of the maxima and it bumped into a concrete barrier that had yellow paint on it. this paint is now scraped across the bottom ground effects molding on our vehicle. had the barrier not been there, we would have drifted across the road into oncoming traffic. in researching transmission problems for the 2004-2006 nissan maxima model years, it's apparent that many owners are experiencing the same type of problems with the transmission on their 2004-2006 nissan maximas, and the widespread nature of these issues warrants further investigation and possible recall.

Transmission is shifting very hard.

I was complaining of the car jumping when changing gears, mechanic found that the motor mount was cracked. replaced it, some improvement for short period but now car is jumping, hesitation between gears, rough shifting, and diminished acceleration. i did not go to the dealer as my warranty is expired. this is my first maxima and i will never purchase another. now told that i'll need a new transmission. not happy.

Transmission started slipping gears right around 58,000 miles. i would drive it and it would get stuck in 5th gear. i would have to switch over to manual to try and switch gears and when i would do that i would experience very hard shifting and jerking. if i'm switching from park to drive while stationary, extremely hard jerking and it would stall for 5 seconds before going into drive. nissan refuses to fix the issue. i guess they want a certain amount of people to die before issuing a recall! this is extremely dangerous to drive when the car does this. i will never buy another crappy nissan ever again! not to mention the sensors that has constantly been replaced over and over thinking it will fix the jerking issues, but it doesn't. imagine having a car full of kids while it does this. thanks nissan for being so concerned about safety! *tr

Valve body had to be replaced in transmission

Transmission slips shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. engine rpms rev to approx. 5000-6000. when the car finally shifts, there is a loud clunking noise that comes in the rear end of the car. *tr

Transmission hesitates when shifting from reverse to drive, also between shifts in drive engine revs up then trans slams into gear causing a harsh jolt forward.

Transmission failure, check engine light comes on, car jerks into gears, rpm's accelerate when driving in first gears. per nissan dealer they said it needed new mounts and a new transmission, i should trade it in they said :[ i have maintained all oil changes and have kept up my service. they are not accepting any responsibility. need help please, i can not afford a new transmission, i can not afford 5 years of car payments as well. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Transmission quit working, was stopped at a burger king and when i tried to drive off the car would not move, had it towed and shop says the transmission is bad, the shop did homework and found out that the transmission was replaced a little more then a year ago by north point nissan in north little rock, they say there was only a year warranty on it and time is already up so there is nothing they can do. nissan is aware of this problem and the nissan tech said get ready to save up for another one because they can replace it and a year later it will go out again. they say the transmissions are crap! *tr

Ongoing issue with 5 sp automatic transmission: started, intermittently around 2 years back @86k, and has increased to the point of not pulling into d or r without jumping or surging into gear, often nightmarish in tight quarters/parking, etc. becoming dangerous as slipping at higher rps has become more prevalent of late, especially lower speed, light incline and increasing speeds. there are tsb's on this vehicle and have a case open with nissanamerica, as of today's date 4/21/2015. dealer has, at this point seems purposely?, misdiagnosing and non-acknowledgement of existing and known issues with the aw5550/51sn automatic transmission slippage and jumping/surging. it is a known issue with solenoids; do your research, there is plenty online in regards to this issue. the representative i spoke with today at nissan will listen, but is advised to not answer questions in regards to this issue, and with good reason..i know it is an older car, but is in great shape (bought used), there is a known defect, a known fix from the actual technical service bulletin:: 2004 - 2006 maxima; 5-speed a/t shift issues technical service bulletin reference number(s): ntb11-035, date of issue: april 7, 2011 nissan: 2004 - 2006 maxima classification: at11-003 applied vehicles: 2004 - 2006 maxima (a34) applied transmission: re5f22a 5-speed a/t if you confirm note: harsh 1-2 and/or 3-4 upshifts during moderate acceleration from a stop and/or harsh 4-3 and/or 2-1 downshifts when slowing to a stop. action go to the repair flow chart for repair procedure. refer to page 4 and 5 for location of a/t assembly serial number and valve body connector locations. *tr

Was at a stop light then when i proceeded to go my cat jerked really hard going in to the next gear at about 20mph. when i went to slow down, the car jerked down going into the lower gear at around 20 mph. then i noticed ever since when i put my cat in gear from park it jerks really hard. *tr

Hard shifting transmission, stalling at cruising speeds, flashing dash lights. transmission slippage.

I recently have been driving this 2005 nissan maxima for a couple of months. it has close to 90k miles on it and the transmission is hard to shift and not being cooperative on most days. this seems to be more than a fluid problem and due to recent research i may need a new transmission for $3,000 and i don't have that type of money. i see that this is a common problem with this specific car and feel a recall should be issued on the 04-06 models of this automobile!! other than that the car runs great. *tr

Today is march 26, 2015 and for the past week; my car has been stalling when i am shifting gears. today i was in a not safe situation at a red light. when i shifted the gears to my car to begin driving, the car stalled on me allowing me to only drive around 5-10 mph down the street. i had to hurry up and pull over because i had cars behind me. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the automatic transmission switched gears caused the vehicle to stall. in addition, the vehicle would accelerate and decelerate independently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
