On sunday, march 4, 2018, in the morning around a 11 am, i was driving my 2004 maxima and it started to loose power and turned off. i tried several times to start it, but it wouldn't hold the idle and turned off again. no nissan dealership or repair shop was open so i called the nearest pep boys shop to my home and they towed my car to their repair shop. they said my car was totally dead and needed a new battery even though my battery wasn't that old. i purchased a battery, still wouldn't start. pep boys then said i needed a new alternator, so that was installed, still wouldn't start. they then said it must be the engine, so the next day, monday, march 4, 2018, it was towed to the fairfield, ct nissan dealership where it is currently until i can figure out what to do. after 3 days, of calling the nissan dealership to find out what was wrong with my car, bet, in the nissan service department told me that they had taken off the side of my engine and tried to manually turn the drive shaft, but it wouldn't turn and that it was the timing chain and that it would cost anywhere from $2,600.00 to $3,600.00 to repair my car. please help with start a case, i can't afford this. i'm in school for paralegal studies and a ct licensed tax preparer

Engine recall i was driving my car and while i was driving the car caught on fire. i was on highway 62 east in minneapolis mn going the speed limit 60 miles and i look and seen smoke coming from hood and the back of my car from the tail pipes.
My 2004 nissan maxima shuts down while running, causing the transmission to default into 5th gear, (2-4 gears effectively disappear) and the all electricity , radio, a/c, and power steering to shut down. on straight highways one can keep driving by shifting into neutral immediately, and trying to restart the engine with the key. usually it restarts and runs but in a deficient power mode. the vdc light appears, letting you know that the transmission will be stuck in 5th gear, with the option of manually starting in 1st gear. either shifting from 1st to automatic or manually to another gear, defaults the car into gear 5. the car is drive-able in this condition, but one has at stoplights, to immediately shift into neutral, and manually with foot pedal, keep the rpms above 1100. fortunately i was driving straight. if turning a corner, and not very strong, i'd have no control over my car. without power steering working the wheel is very hard to turn. finally one day, the car would not start on cold start. it would occasionally almost fire, make some revolutions, but then would only turn on power of the starter. the first mechanic gave an estimate of $3600 to replace the timing chain the problem originally did not exist when engine was cold, but after engine warms up, at the first time the rpm's fall below 1000, the engine shuts off... usually waiting for a cold engine again, causes the car to start up in original form.
After 100,000 miles transmission started shoes of failure. shifting past second grar would cause the car to stalll, then buck. car would also buck when accelerating at high speeds. also the car would stall and the accelerator would become unresponsive when shifting at high speeds. forced to release the acceloratot and the press it again, until the transmission would shift correctly and "catch" the gear. massive gas consumption caused by faulty transmission. most errors caused when shifting in high speed or uphill. specifically when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. car would slow down and work harder to accelerate after driving at high speeds for any period of time. transmission shifts would cause bucking and the body of the car to jerk and shake.
The timing chain tensioner that is made from plastic came apart and has caused my cars engine to fail.this is clearly a defective designed part . it will cost around $2000.00 parts and labor for the repair from the nissan dealership.nissan should step up and correct this design flaw for me and many others with this same problem .
My timing chain primary guide has broke ! this is a defective design assembly part! it's made of plastic and the plastic breaks and the chain looses tension! it cost 2000$ to repair. i'm driving the car. i can't go on the highway because if the chain fails the car will just stop!'dangerous nissan has known of the defective part ! they notified all dealerships in 2004 tsb. buyers avoid nissan maxi as 04-08 models.

My car is jerking and bucking really badly while into gear also while coming to stops and driving along. the take off is slow and hesitant and it loses power at times while driving. while putting it in gear it jerks really hard as well. please help! i can not afford to fix this problem and i need my transportation for work
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. after restarting, there was a slight reduction in the engine power. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the cam shaft sensor would need to be replaced. the manufacturer issued a voluntary recall under reference number: r2022 (cam shaft) however, the vin was not included. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was unavailable.
Transmission problems causes car to jerk very badly, acts as tho it does not want to go. pulling off you will have to make sure no cars are coming at all because if you just go, you're likely to be hit. *tr
I took my car in for an inspection, found out that the floor on the passenger side had rusted from the inside out and there was a good size hole. it cost me a couple hundred to fix because it wouldn't pass the inspection. the next thing was the slack timing chain, the car sounds like a truck. i've been told it would cost up to $3000 to fix. then the biggest safety issue is the transmission, this one is really concerning. the jerking, bucking, kicking, clanging, the seconds of hesitation between drive and reverse and then suddenly it engages and the kick could give you whiplash. sometimes i feel like i'm in a rodeo. when the car sits for awhile (overnight) there is no issue with the initial start but once it warms up that's it. you can't accelerate properly once the car slows down, or is making a turn, going around a bend or comes to a stop because it drops out of gear, then there is the hesitation and at that point it just revs, this happens 2 or 3 times before it engages again then there is a massive bang and the car lunges forward, by then the traffic is right under your rear bumper. after this happens a few times there is no more acceleration, the pedal has to be pushed to the floor for the car to move. the engine light came on a month or two ago and hasn't gone off. this is a real dangerous, safety issue. a few days ago another issue appeared, i cannot open the driver side door with the remote door opener or the electronic door opener on the inside of the door. at this point i've read many complaints about these issues, they are all manufacture problems but the timing chain and transmission is the biggest when it comes to safety because you do not know when the car will stop. why hasn't nissan done a recall????? there are enough complaints.
The car is jerking is while driving. it is also revving while driving. *tr

I bought a 2004 nissan maxima se a year and two months ago. it had 91,000 miles on it. the transmission started slamming gears a few months ago right around 100k miles. i had it looked at and no problem could be found. but then on 1/8/15 the transmission got stuck in 5th gear. it would go into park and reverse fine but in drive it went straight into 5th. i was able to get it to slowly drive to a friends house where i parked and left it over night and borrowed a vehicle from them. the next morning i came back cranked it and it was fine. so i drove it towards the repair shop. it dies as i pull in. they run a diagnostic and they say the cam sensor is bad. the really expensive warranty that supposedly covers my car from bumper to bumper is claiming that this part is not covered in my bumper to bumper warranty so now i'm suck with a really expensive repair bill if i want to drive my car again. the thing is i get on line and see that there are thousands and thousands of people who have had the same problems i'm having and nissan is aware of the defect in the year model of car and are doing nothing to fix it and no ones warranties are covering the repairs. i'm a single mother and i make very little money so i don't have the extra income to fix this problem that clearly should be a recall in the first place. i hope that you will make nissan accountable one day for their blatant screwing of their customers. *tr
I was inspecting under the hood and the radiator split at the top, spraying coolant everywhere. the cap was functioning. no injury but very dangerous. the radiator looks like it is made of some type of plastic. i have a photograph of the radiator. i contacted nissan and they told me to take it to a dealer. i didn't ask for compensation. i asked that the nissan engineering dept review the defect for safety reasons and received no reply. i replaced the radiator myself. this is a safety issue. i have the radiator in my garage. thanks [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Whenever i shift to reverse the car pauses and then jerks, same jerk behavior happens whenever i shift from reverse to drive. sometimes when i am driving i can feel the car hesitating when switching gears. i have been told the transmission is going bad. *tr
When driving the car, it slams into 2nd gear and/or hesitates shifting into it. when idle and shifting from reverse to drive or from drive to reverse, there is a 2-3 delay and the car jerks and slams into that gear. the jerk is aggressive and can cause in injury. the car does not shift smoothly and constantly jerks and slams into gear. after having the vehicle diagnosed, they mechanics say it will either need a new valve body or new transmission on a car with 112k miles on it. this is a common issue for 2004-2006 nissan maxima owners and is very dangerous and expensive. *tr

While picking my new, used maxima 2004 from dealer, pulling out of the lot and waiting for clearance to get on highway, i proceeded to turn onto hw & it stalled & alternator light came on & "check engine" it hasn't shut off yet, i felt like i was in a horrible nightmare.. i thought i was going to get hit because cars were coming, i quickly put hazards on, and put it in neutral and tried to start it, it was trying to turn over as i was pumping the gas pedal like a jack hammer, i finally floored it & it started not without whiplash to my neck, my chest hit the steering wheel because it jerked sooooo hard into gear !!!. i put it in drive and was so nervous because cars were honking & swearing at me...i was totally shocked and greatly disappointed that i almost caused multiple car collision. i called mgr at dealership when i got home & he said " just call service and make an appt. i said i just left your lot w/new plates and told him what had just happened, he said " i have nothing to do w/service, so call them in the a.m. & make an appt." didn't even apologize. i got anxiety because i'm 47 yrs old and had quite a few cars and i know when a car jerks, goes from drive to 5th gear with powerful jerking motion all the time, skipping & stalling while in drive, most likely a bad transmission, its obviously not safe to drive, i just bought it 9/18/14 & i cant drive it, it won't pass inspection in 7 days. check engine light still on, looks like 7 days is not happening my appt is 9/25/14 supposed to be under warranty. instead of being excited about car i'm so angry & i feel like once they had my money, they could care less about me or my family or drivers on road. thankfully no-one got hurt, its been parked since 9/21/14, they said they did 21 pt insp, yaa right !! sure they did, how can they knowingly let me drive off lot..with no regard for public safety. is this legal ?? *tr
I bought used 2004 nissan maxima car at north shore auto mall on 9/18/14,the service tech. drove car up to front of dealership w/car still running he test drove car w/me( didn't think anything about it at the time) i got in and we went for a test drive, car was great. got back to dealer, gave the balance. once i left dealer, while driving on highway the car started to skip & felt like it was going to stall, i pulled over to right lane, put hazards on w/traffic behind me, the car stalled, i almost caused a collision, cars were beeping, swerving out of the way, i couldn't get any acceleration with it in drive, so i put it in neutral & after 3 tries it started up w/much hesitation. i was scared for my life & others on the road, i took side streets to make it home & when i stopped at stop sign it stalled again, i repeated the same steps as above w/hazards on the whole ride home.now i know why the service tech. took test ride w/me. i had a friend with me as my witness.this car wont pass inspection , the check engine light will not turn off, i called dealer he said make an appt, i said i only have 7 days for inspection sticker, he said, he has nothing to do with service and to call them. i called on monday the 22nd &1st,available appt.wasn't til 9/25/14, my 7 days were up on that thursday. he said he'll call me around noon, i waited til friday 5pm, he nor anyone in serv. called to update me & let me know car will be there over the weekend. what do i do & what's the time limit on fixing my car w/o any communication to me. im sooooo upset at the lack of professionalism and ethics, im afraid if i say something derogatory, they will sabotage my car. please help me..!!!! *tr
[xxx] starting it up takes 2-3x with putting the gas pedal all the way to the floor, then it jerks into gear. while driving it just stalls out which is very scary & dangerous and it goes from drive to 5th gear no 1-4, and it hesitates & when driving up to a red light for example, then it starts to conk out. also no pick up from an idle position, i just bought it 9/17/14 and called dealer and he told him it wont pass inspection "check engine light on" constant. it feels like transmission isn't in proper gear (5th) just stalls while driving. everyone behind me leans on the horn and yells at me when it stalls out in drive. im afraid to drive it. the dealer (north shore auto mall, lynn ma 01905, mgr name [xxx], real jerk !!) said they did a 21 point inspection, but that's bs, they would have caught that seeing that they are in the business and knew they sold me a car w/bad transmission/alternator. now they don't want to know me. please give me some resources that you know of to remedy the problem. i could go on & on about the treatment i had to endure but that wont help hopefully you can regards [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
As i was driving home, traffic began to slow down due to congestion. as i slowed down, the car began to jerk violently. i was nearly hit from behind. the car jerked two more times as i made my way over to the side of the highway. i turned off the car and waited a few minutes. i prayed then started my car again. i was approximately 10 miles from home. as i got off the highway and pulled onto my local street, i came to a red light. as i slowed down, the car began to jerk again. i pulled over and turned the car off. after a while, i continued to drive home. i parked the car, checked my oil (levels were good) and started to call around for help. this is extremely dangerous. *tr
My 2004 maxima was 'missing' during freeway driving and 'died' as i turned in my driveway. nissan did some miscellaneous repairs but told me that there was 'secondary timing chain noise due to worn guides.' i was told by the service representative that if this isn't fixed the engine could be destroyed. the estimated cost is $1,700. i am afraid to drive my car because if this breaks on the freeway i and others could be in jeopardy. there are class action suits against nissan regarding a design flaw in the 'timing chain tensioner and guide' assembly. i feel it incumbent on nissan to issue a recall but i am unaware that one has been issued. i feel betrayed that i was sold a potentially dangerous automobile with no remedy other than an expensive repair. *tr

Woke up to a horn steadily beeping, went to my window to see what was going on and i see flames shooting about 15 ft high and knew my neighbor's car was on fire, after the fire the owner told me he had not driven the car that day, and that it melted the dashboard and quickly destroyed interior and engine compartment of the car, there could have been fatalities or injuries as the car had a full gas tank, and luckily did not reach gas tank, but if it had there would have been major property damage to several homes, and many lives put at risk. *tr
My wife's 2004 maxima which she originally purchased new at the pomoco nissan dealership in hampton, virginia has 59,000 miles on it currently and the vehicle's automatic transmission jerks violently when decelerating and then slams into gear. the event occurs around an estimated speed of 25-30 mph during downshifting of the transmission. the experience feels like someone has crashed into you from the rear...and the force from the gearing thrust throws the car forward violently. this happens every time the car is driven and is a critical safety concern for us. vehicle was taken to wesley chapel nissan dealership located in wesley chapel, florida for an inspection and the tech said the transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of $3300 for parts & labor. as reflected in the low mileage, the car has been driven very little and has been meticulously maintained by her and has remained garaged the majority of the time. i have done some research and discovered that numerous 2004 maxima owners have experienced the same transmission (failure) problems with similar mileage range, but no recall was ever activated by the nissan company to remedy the issue. however, there was an extended warranty issued for a few nissan models regarding faulty transmissions excluding the maxima. called consumer affairs at nissan to complain about the problem, but was told by rep that there was nothing they could do because the warranty for the vehicle had expired. i explained to the rep that there are numerous complaints regarding the transmission problems and that nissan needs to do something to fix the problem since this is a recurring theme when it comes to this specific year of the maxima model. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan maxima. when i was driving, the steering locked up and there was no way to steer. i don?t know how i did it, being petite and not so strong, but i managed to make the car move to the side, then it turned off automatically. i tried to turn on the car and it didn't start. i had to wait a few minutes and turn the key for a few seconds until the engine restarted. it becomes extremely difficult to pull over to the side, and i was saved the 5-7 times this happened to me. luck was on my side! i didn't drive my car on the freeway, because i was terrified my car would stall and my son and i would die in a terrible car accident. i finally had to go to my shop and replace the two camshaft sensors with the following codes p3040 and p0345. with some searching, i found out that i?m not the only one with this issue. i stand by the former complaint: ?i found out that nissan has a recall on altima?s with this same issue, but will not cover and recall my vehicle. this is very dangerous and i do not understand why they would only recall certain makes when it is the same exact error code on both vehicles. it is a p3040 and p0345 cam sensor/cam shaft recall through nissan. however, they say my make and model does not fall under this recall. shouldn't they recall all vehicles with this same problem?? thank you for your help in this safety issue. *tr
Engine light continues to come on> thumping sound under hood when started. timing chain issues!!!!!! this is known according to extensive research to nissan. why in the world is there nothing done about it?! we are hard working people and spend hard earned money to purchase a car and there is no recourse for a messed up part!!!! *tr
My 18 year old son could not get the vehicle to engage in reverse. in an effort to drive the vehicle to the mechanic the transmission failed while driving and luckily i was able to coast to the side of the road narrowly escaping a traffic accident. i had recently passed this vehicle down to my son and i shudder to think what would have happened to him if he had been behind the wheel considering he is a less experienced driver. i have been informed that there are numerous incidents involving nissan vehicle transmissions. *tr
While i was driving onto a highway off of a ramp i went to accelerate to merge into traffic while doing so my car did not move and the engine rpms redlined after about 3 seconds my car jerked into gear and felt as if someone had rear-ended me however i noticed it was my car not being able to get into gear. once it got into gear the car peeled out uncontrollably and i almost ran my car off the road. the vehicle is a very well maintained vehicle and only has 75,000 miles on it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving 51 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to be restarted after several minutes and proceeded to function normally. the contact stated that four years prior to the recent failure, the same symptoms lead to the contact having to replace the engine and the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 200,000.
When ever i shift to reverse the car pauses and then jerks. i took it to the shop and had new motor mount put in to solve the problem. for a few days you could barely feel the jerking when switching to reverse. literally by the next week it was bad all over again and the jerking returned. also, sometimes when i am driving i can feel the car, to my knowledge, switching gears. for example, this morning i was driving to work and going only around 25mph and as i started to accelerate the car jerked and slowed down for about 5 seconds before it returned to my normal speed. thirdly, the power locks are not consistent. when i lock my doors with the automatic lock on the keys or even by pressing the power locks on the door handle it will only lock the front right passenger and the back left passenger door. this can be very frustrating as i have left my car doors unlocked unknowingly. *tr
On saturday january 5th 2013, my engine light came on. i called carmax on monday january 7th 2013 to get my extended warranty information. i scheduled an appointment with passport nissan located in oxon hill, md. the service department told me. i need to have my timing chain, gears, guides and tensions replace for $2,619.00 with replacing the oil cooler (it has leakage) $698.00. well my extended warranty expired when my car hit 100,000. if i had known this before i purchase the car from carmax, i would have never took it off the lot. by the way i only had the car since april 2011. i need help!!!!! i need to express to you the importance for me to have reliable transportation. i have a young child who i need to take to school each day. without my transportation, my son would have to walk a full mile to the bus stop by himself alone at 7am. by the way it's dark at that time and it's close to an open street. i myself without transportation, i would have to walk a mile plus to a bus stop to catch a bus to the train station. from the train station i have to take a train to work and walk additional mile plus to work. this is very over whelming because i'm still paying a car note and car insurance for a car i can't drive. i'm being put in a difficult situation because i can't afford to get my car fixed. *tr
The transmission slips frequently, often hesitation when switching from park/reverse/drive and when switching from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. the slip often results in lack of power to the wheels and then a sudden jerk when it does finally kick in. it can be very dangerous when you pull into traffic and expect the vehicle to accelerate normally and instead get stuck between gears. should be a recall on this transmission since it is apparent from online research that this is a very common occurrence. *tr
After stopping at traffic signal, the car doesn't move and starts jerking when shifting between gears. 2 months back the gear wouldn't shift from 5th, took to dealer they replaced a bad sensor and now it jerks and doesn't move when shifting gears. *tr
The car started shaking and would not accelerate, the service engine soon light was now displayed. need to get off the road and have it towed. the ground wire was broken off the transmission and caused the computer to short out as well as all of the six ignition coils as too much voltage was sent to the coils. nissan knows about the problem but did not issue any recall. this can also cause a fire in the car if the wires heat up and catch the evap system; therefore i would recommend issuing a recall of this problem. *tr

Approximately 2 years ago my car wouldn't shift gears. since it was covered under warranty still i brought it so the nissan dealership and they replaced a sensor. about a year agony car started 'banging' into gear after being driven for a few minutes. i decided to take it to my mechanic since my warranty was up and nissan consumer affairs was not very helpful. i was told today the transmission valve maybe the problem and its $1200 to fix. if this doesn't solve the issue then i have to have the tranny rebuilt.
