Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2000 Nissan Maxima

Car was in motion when it lost power and stalled the dashboard has no light and battery is charged than when driving the car it drains and shuts off .

I have a 2000 nissan maxima. recently the problems have been piling on. the air conditioner stopped working in the summer and the check engine light went on. the air conditioner needs a new pump and the "check engine" light i was told is the o2 sensor. today is 1/27/13 and a week ago my power steering belt shredded. it caused the car to stall temporarily but i was able to drive the car to my local garage to be fixed. the mechanics said it was not only the power steering belt but the alternator belt and the pumps as well. the problem was taken care of and i picked the car up. before i pulled out i tried the heat and defrost but they would not work now. the heat and defrost had been acting strange and smelled as if burning was happening. the heat would be hard to turn off at times. the different levels of heat were all the same most time. the mechanics looked at it later and said the car needs a o2 sensor and the whole climate control mechanism. the mechanism on my car had melted wires. i have been noticing a lot of weird electrical quirks outside of thee heat. i have noticed a lot of decay for a car used everyday. the problems that prompted me to look online about these issues are exactly the same issues people are having with this vehicle at the same mileage. o2 sensor, electrical, decay, etc.. anyone who owns this vehicle should have been at least warned by the manufacturer. the problems this vehicle has and parts that should have been recalled or fixed can lead to people getting in fatal crashes. i wonder what the statistics for fatal crashes with these model years are compared to other? *tr

The car started accelerating and then died while driving down the road. had to exit off the road fast as the car coasted down to prevent other cars from hitting the car. in danger of other cars running over car while our car malfunction. took car to shop and was told a 2 dollar o-ring on the auto control valve had allowed air leakage and this in turned caused failure of the ecm electron control module. both auto control valve and ecm needs replacing where the car can be safely driven. the fact of this failure did not bring in the engine service light till after the event and fact it will cost over $2000 dollars to repair a car that is not work much more $3000 are just facts. nissan needs to at least send out to their customers that owns of this model and make could have this condition than can happen and exist and cause erratic behavior of the car if not check by nissan. a $2 dollar part causing a $2000 dollar repair. *tr

I checked my oil and transmission fluid about a week and a half after buying the car and right when i shut the hood the check engine light popped on and stayed on obviously very temperamental. about a week later while stopped at a red light the engine felt a little weird then when i started driving right away the car lost power shut down and all the light popped on i had my 2 year old and 3 year old and fiance in the car and the steering wheel locked up and i almost got hit trying to steer it out of traffic into a mcdonald's. called the dealer and he just left us sitting there in the heat. called the tow truck and i was trying to restart the car but it would turn over but not stay on. so i wait and wait and decide to try starting it like 20 minutes later after looking under the hood and it starts right up as the tow truck is pulling up but he charged me anyway even though i was able to drive it from there to the dealers on my own the dealers mechanic kept trying to diagnose this thing and kept saying oh its fixed now about 4 different times...first he said it was the coil pack, then he said it was the maf mass air flow sensor, then they said bad gas was put in it by them and they cleaned the gas rail, then finally they listened to me and replaced the isc (idle speed control) motor now it started working and not dying on me when i slow down or stop at red lights because they gave it back to me like three times saying it was fixed and it wasn't but now when i'm in the park position with the car running within about 20-30 seconds the rpm drops and the car lights up and dies but at least it starts right back up and drives not like before but this is still a problem. look on identifix website and you will see that 4 components need to be recalled. the maf, ignition coils, isc, and most expensive of all the ecm which it says is usally damaged once the isc is done for.

Hi, i have a 2000 nissan maxima. i am having the same problem from other 2000 nissan maxima owners. my car stalls, shakes, hesitates and looses power, it acts like it wants to shut off. the service engine light comes on, the trac off light and the slip light come on all which are said to be caused by defective ignition coils. i have already replaced one and not even 1 month later the car started doing the same thing, meaning i will have to replace all six coils. i believe nissan has to do a recall because that is a very dangerous thing to be driving and your car to stall out like that. i believe that the owners of the 2000 nissan maximas with this problem should be reimbursed for the money we have to pay out to fix a part that nissan did not build correct. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 nissan maxima. the contact stated that when restarting the vehicle, the engine would misfire and the vehicle would shake abnormally. the vehicle would also shake abnormally when driving at various speeds and would sporadically begin to lose power. the dealer performed a diagnosis on the vehicle and determined that the ignition was defective. most recently, the check engine warning light was illuminated and would not shut off. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 36,000.

2000 nissan maxima's have a serious engine ignition coil defect. -- this defect causes the engine to run rough, stall and abruptly and unexpectedly stop during normal use. the engine warning light was little (if any) value in helping alert the driver to the sudden engine failure. the engine has 6 separate coils. the first coil failed and was replaced by the nissan dealer. it was not covered by any type of nissan warranty. within a 90 day period, two additional coils failed and needed to be replaced. eventually, all 6 ignition coils ultimately needed to be replaced at a cost of over $900.00. the dealer stated this was a "very common problem" with this model, and said eventually all of the coils fail with this nissan year, make and model. he provide the failure code p1320 and nissan service reference: ntb01-059. the work was performed by a nissan dealer in arizona. this manufactures defect needs to be recalled by nhtsa and nissan needs to service these units before it results in additional accidents, fire or fatalities. *tr

Car ran rough and stalled, took it to shop and they had to replace all the coils at a cost of almost $1,000. this happened at 65,000 miles. looking on this site there are 115 complaints about this problem. my question is how many people need to report a potential dangerous problem before it gets a recall? *tr

Service engine light came on. took to precision tune who diagnosed the problem to be the 6 coils which needed to all be replaced per a nissan tech report stating they were defective. $1300.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr gp

Since i owned this car i have multiple issues. the check engine light is constantly on. i took the vehicle to a mechanic and i was told the code was indicating the coils were bad. also, i have experienced the slip and tcs light come on. the vehicle shakes and loses power. on top that i can't get the car to pass inspection. my radio also has a electrical problems, it went dark. i feel we should all file a class action law suit. *tr

Ignition coil fails causing misfire in engine. has happened several times. part is defective and causes car to run very rough. there is an online petition for the 2000 nissan maxima. it cost up to $600 to fix. *tr

Awareness needs to be made on the 2000 nissan maxima, the car will have a ecu breakdown resulting in the car to shut off at any given time. a trouble code of p0505 will trigger off in the car resulting in an insane repair cost. numerous cars are affected and nissan refuses to perform a recall on this car. its a matter of time before one of these nissans shuts down at the wrong time resulting in someone's death. there are pages upon pages of posts with this problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact immediately took the vehicle to a local mechanic and was informed that the ignition coils failed. the vehicle was repaired at the contact's expense and was informed that many other nissan owner's were experiencing the same failure for that year, make, and model. nissan was unable to provide assistance because the repairs had been made by a local mechanic. the failure mileage was 39,131 and current mileage is 39,400. updated 6/2/08 *cn updated 06/02/08

Nissan-maxima 2000- mileage 39131 - ignition coils went. went on web and there are countless complaints - same thing. one dealer said if enough people complain nissan would make it a recall. *tr i went to my local repair man (excellent) i baby my nissan. nissan is stonewalling. 3/18/208

On march 5, 2008, the idle air control went out on this vehicle. the part was replaced with a genuine part from nissan. within 30 days of replacing the part, the electronic motor mount wiring shorted out, which caused the new part to burn, as well as the computer. the car was taken to the nissan dealership, in which they were aware of this problem and failed to do something about it. i was told that this has happened to several other customers and there is nothing that could be done about it. everytime this part burns out, it will cost $2000.00 dollars to replace the part and you will still have problems with the vehicle. i feel the nissan dealership is concealing a problem that could have been recalled and some resolution to this problem could have been found. the consumers are being deceived by not being informed of this problem before they purchase the 2000 series of nissan maxima. *tr

Regarding california emissions law- all 6 ignition coils replaced at 51,000 and air flow meter also having to be replaced. car would not run and kept dying until nissan replaced parts. *tr

Early failure of one or more ignition coils. the dealer (and neighborhood mechanic) can't tell which, so all 6 have to be replaced at a cost of $800+. *tr

Service engine light suddenly came on. took to service shop where computer diagnosed ignition coil failure. no way to determine which coil is bad. told to replace all the coils at cost of $1300. went to internet and found that this is a frequent problem with my make and model car. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 nissan maxima. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalls and shuts off. the vehicle will restart after approximately 4-5 attempts. the dealer replaced the mass air-flow sensor approximately two years ago and recharged the ecm. the current and failure mileages were 90,354.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle shook and made a grumbling noise when started. in addition, the check engine light illuminated. the dealer stated that three of the ignition coils needed to be replaced. the dealer refused to make the repairs unless they were paid for by the contact. the current mileage was 75,000 and failure mileage was 70,000.

Ignition coils bad on my '00 nissan maxima. according to the dealer, this is a nagging issue with the ignition coils in this model of car. *tr

Misfiring stalling. check eng lt came on required all new coils at 45,000 miles. then oxygen sensor, dealer said" you don't come here for oil changes so you are not a loyal customer" and charged over $1,100 no help at all considering how many people have been affected. this is our second and last nissan. *tr

Check engine light on. i had the vehicle checked said they could not tell which coil is bad so all 6 has to be replaced. this is sad we have to pay to fix parts that might not be broken just because nissan wants to make extra money i guess or they would have made it so you will know exactly which coil is bad! i think there should be a recall and nissan should fix this part seeing has they know there is a problem with it. unless of course nissan doesn't stand by there vehicles!!! *jb

2000 nissan maxima ignition coils failure. *jb

Engine runs rough during cold weather (<50 degrees) and trips the code for engine misfire. the code does not always tell which cylinder has the misfire. engine coils determined to be the problem, but replacement only delays another misfiring for a while. i like the car but doubt i'll ever buy another nissan because of this issue. *tr

With only 50,000 miles on my maxima, the check engine light came on. after bringing it to nappoli nissan in milford, i was told that the several of the coils were bad and they recommended replacing all six ($1191.82). after looking on line i found that numerous complaints were posted. i call nissan and they told me because there was no recall and the warranty was up at 36000 miles they could not help. nissan has change the part , obviously because of a design flaw and i feel they should be liable for the repair! *jb

6 ignition coils need to be replaced at 45,000 from the local nissan dealer for $1,200. *nm

I am a 2000 nissan maxima owner and have had the ignition coils misfire that the dealer wants to $850 to replace. i feel that this repair should be covered by nissan in the form of a manufacturers recall due to the fact that many other maxima owners have experienced the same problems and that there is evidence that the original ignition coils are defective. 1) this issue is very common with maximas and they perform many ignition coil repair/replacements. 2) i have seen on the internet service advisors suggesting to replace all the coils even if only one of them is malfunctioning because they say, "the coils are defective and will all fail eventually". 3)there is a recall petition on the internet with about 2200+ people all having the same problem i understand that nissan has since issued a new part and part number for all ignition coil replacements, which suggests that the original coils are, in fact, defective. to maintain brand integrity and loyalty, i respectfully submit my complaint and request for a manufacturer's recall. sincerely, [xxx]. *nm information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 nissan maxima. the contact claimed to have an ignition coil failure, engine ping, and a decrease in power when accelerating. the contact replaced the ignition coil twice within three months , and could provide repair invoices if needed. the failure mileage was 75200.*ak consumer states that dealer will not provide copy of diagnostic and c-rt stating only for internal use. update *4/23/07tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 50 mph, the vehicle hesitated. an independent mechanic determined that the ignition coils failed.

2000 maxima 55000 miles, service engine soon light came on. took to dealer was told it needed an ignition coil. they said they cant determine which coil is bad, so all six must be replaced. total cost. $850.58 . i work for a ford dealership, we replace only defective coils, the diagnostic computer tells the mechanic which coil is causing the code. there is an online petition against nissan for the coil problem, so far 2642 people have signed. cant this be made a recall and the people who were swindled to pay get the money reimbursed. ford has done it before. a few years ago the distributor modules were a big problem, lots of people were paid back for money spent. hopefully something can be done about this. *jb

At 45k miles, i had to replace all six ignition coils in my 2000 nissan maxima. i also had to replace a single coil approximately 2 years while the car was under warranty. the car was idling rough this time. *jb

All six ignition coils failed. *nm

Vehicle started running very rough and had eng knock. brought into a service department and was informed that #2 ignition coil had gone bad. the car was a danger to myself and other drivers due to the fact that it would stall and was very sluggish. i recommend that nissian recall this part due to the dangerous nature. after looking up the problem on different forums there are many many others with this exact problem. i have since replaced the bad ignition coil but it seems to be only temporary as many others can contest that one by one all the ignition coils will keep going bad. *tr

Ignition coils failed causing service engine soon light to illuminate. code was reset after the first time, and on 10-23-06 it returned again with a code of p1320. engine had misfired between 10-02-06 and 10-23-06 and had exhibited extended cranking time for approximately 1 month before. starter and battery were replaced before incident. replacement of starter and batter was likely unnecessary because problem was likely the ignition coils. car also exhibited loss of power. *nm

2000 nissan maxima engine misfire poor acceleration defective coil packs. service advisor recommends replacing all six coil packs with new design @ my expense. replaced one defective coil pack & spark plug in that cylinder. *nm

2000 nissan maxima. problem with engine misfiring related to ntb01059. problem continues to recur though coil packs (6) are replaced. this is expensive. nissan knows about it. there are websites and petitions with over 3000 names of people having this recurring problem. *jb

I have the same engine ignition coil problem as listed throughout your site and the internet by thousands of other 2000 nissan maxima owners. the service engine light is on, the car is barely running because of these faulty ignition coils which the dealer recommend i have replaced for over $1000. nissan refuses to address this defect with a recall. something needs to happen. first they told it was the spark plugs which i had replaced. then it was these coils, the car just keeps getting worse daily. stalling, barely accelerating, can't take it on the highway because it barely moves. accelerator fails often, sometimes there is no response from pushing the gas pedal down. the fumes coming from the car indicate that gas is being wasted. also getting terrible gas mileage. please help. *nm

Consumer complaint concerning 2000 maxima ndis coil defect recall. *kb ***nar*** six ignition coils were replaced. *jb

My check engine light is on - and the car is running poorly. there is an issue with it jerking intermittently while driving. i have been told by the repair shop that there is a technical service bulletin on this car for bad engine coils and harnesses. total cost to repair is between $3,000-4,000. if a manufacturer knows there is a problem with a car it produces, it should have a recall and repair the cars affected. *jb

Problems with ignition coils on vehicle.*mr the vehicle's ignition coil failed which caused the service engine soon light to illuminate on the dash. *nm

Ignition coil failure on well maintained 2000 maxima created dangerous driving situation, car would "stall" pressing accelerator accomplished nothing as if vehicle were "starving" for fuel; advised to have all 6 coils replaced (mechanic believes these had already been replaced once before - car was purchased used w/ 25,000 miles) current repair nearly $1000, also additional cost to replace oxygen sensor and fuel regulator; based on number of similar complaints, this should be of concern to nissan and should warrant a recall or at the least, some assistance with cost; wondering if "class action" type lawsuit advisable to gain nissan's attention. *nm

I believe, the engine light problem was there since i bought it because after driving couple of months (1000-1500 miles) the light appeared. first, it will come and go after approx 61,000 miles it became permanent. in 2008 i took the vehicle to nissan dealership bill kay at downers grove il paid approx. $2,000 for fixing the problem but after some time it again came up and started flashing. in 2010 again i took it to maineke auto work shop and got the ignition coils changed, silencer/exhaust changed and paid almost $1,200 but again the same problem of engine light came back. the problom goes on and on, recently i got the new battery and took it to the gerald nissan at ogden ave. naperville, il they said they changed the coils but light came back the very next day. i paid $800. now they are again mentioning there is a problem with sensor. please advise and help me with this problem. these cars are suppose to be sturdy and not have such problem so frequently and i am sick and tired of spending money on this car. *tr

My 2000 nissan maxima has been experience problems with the "check engine soon" light. a dealer hooked it up to a computer and indicated a code of p1320 - faulty coil - misfire on cylinder 4. he told me in his experience with 2000 nissan maximas he can replace one, but customer will be back because the coils are defective and other will eventually go. i feel since they are defective cylinders, nissan should recall the parts. *nm

Service engine soon light came on and engine started misfiring. took car to nissan dealership and was quoted $900 to replace defective ignition coils. car has 85000 miles. *nm

I have a 2000 nissan maxima and the slip / tcs / check engine light turns on then it starts to shake n looses power. engine light blinks at times.. i replace all coils and spark plus with dealer and they tell me the i need to replace the engine coil harness which is around $1,000.. they say that these cars have the same problems.. i have in hand of many stories of people with the same problem. and in all the stories everyone is mad because there is no recall on this problem? *tr

Ses light comes on constantly, gets annoying, makes you think your not safe like something's wrong. turns out to be ignition coils. doing research, found hundreds if not thousands of cases where the 2000 maxima had ignition coil failure anywhere from 18k to 90k miles. this causes fouled plugs, misfires, failure to start, and loss of power. *nm

My 2000 nissan maxima constantly knocks and pings when i try to accelerate on the highway or up a hill causing a dangerous condition on a entrance ramp or when attempting to pass. i have been told by nissan dealers that the ignition coils need to be replaced (for $1000) and there is a technical service bulletin issue by the nhtsa to do so. i consider this a dangerous situation that nissan should be responsible for and i would like to see a recall to cover the cost of this defeat. *jb

my 2000 maxima has 82000 miles on it, and this is the second time i have had to replace ignition coils since i bought the car in december 2004 (with 69000 miles on it). i have learned that this is an incredibly common problem with 2000 maximas. if i had known i was going to have so many problems, i definitely would have bought a different car. nissan's ignition coils should be investigated and recalled. *nm

Service engine soon light came on at 68000 miles. took to dealer and they informed me that it was a p1320 code and that the primary ignition coil #4 was faulty. they wanted me to have all 6 ignition coils replaced and all 6 spark plugs for a total of $912. this is a problem that is plaguing a lot of other people. the problem is causing misfiring and rough idling. *jb
