Problems with 2004 Nissan Armada SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2004 Nissan Armada starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 105 192 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2004 Nissan Armada

As i was driving the brake light came on and a very loud noise came on with it. my truck began to lock up and slow down. after trying to step on the brakes to get it to stop several times, it finally came to a stop. i was terrified because i didn't think the truck would stop and i almost ran into the back of someone. after getting the brakes to work, i put the truck in park and turned it off. i sat there in traffic with my hazard lights on and waited for about a minute. i started my truck back up and put it into drive. i drove a few feet and the entire ordeal started all over again. this time after getting it to stop. i put it in park and sat in traffic for about 3-5 minutes with my hazard lights on. after i started it up again, the truck drove fine. this is not the first time this has happened, and i've taken it to several dealerships, but naturally they could find nothing wrong. i reported it to nissan and each time i took it to them for service, they never found anything wrong with it. i even went on a dashboard on line to see if anyone else was experiencing this problem, and they have. some say it was the brake booster, but after they got it changed they still had the same problem. i've been experiencing this problem since i have had the truck and when it happened the first time, i was told that sometimes it takes a little longer for the computer to register that the hand brakes are off. i was told this by nissan service department. this needs to be a safety recall because it truly is a safety issue. this problem has gotten worse as the years go by. something is wrong and it's something that has been wrong with the vehicle. it only happens at certain times and i have had my brakes inspected, changed, and all of the above. someone needs to put this out to nissan and have them issue a recall before someone gets seriously hurt or worse killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal would depress to the floor when the brakes were applied. the anti lock braking system would also activate when the failure occurred. the contact would temporarily resolve the failure by shutting the vehicle off and restarting. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was not taken to dealer for inspection or repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 149,000.

While driving down the freeway the brake light came on and the brakes were soft until you reached the bottom. then the brakes would engage but would bring the truck to a sudden stop. in the middle of the freeway with 4 kids ranging from 2-12 and 3 adults it could have been a serious if not fatal accident. i managed to control the truck and get off the freeway. this has happened before but not in these driving conditions. my family was very distressed. i pulled into a local dealership to check it out since turning the vehicle off will reset the problem. i was told that the brake booster needed to be replaced because of a bad delta stroke sensor. this will cost approximately 928 dollars. this has been an ongoing problem and as i have researched the inherent i am not the only one. i pray no one has a serious accident. if the issue is recurring all over the country with the brake problem then recall it. i guess we will have to major accident for nissan to do something. *tr

While traveling on road (good conditions) the brake light (red) comes on and a grinding noise along with a moderate braking comes on without driver ever touching parking brake or foot brake. when brake is applied the vehicle comes to a sudden stop along with loud grinding noise. this grinding noise continues until the ignition is turned off then back on again. this happened more than a dozen times and i have brought it in for servicing but no resolution. this is a grave safety hazard. *jb

i have a 2004 armada i bought new in 2005. 08/2011 was the first time my abs vdl slip lights came on as i was braking, along with a horrible grinding noise with my brakes. i was going about 20 mph and attempted to stop. my braking was impaired, and if i touched the brakes anymore, my foot would go to the floor. not knowing what to do, after trying the brake several times (which was more grinding noises) i shut the car off, waited a few minutes and started with no further issues until 10/2012 when the exact same thing happened. this time i was going 40 mph on a 4 lane highway. i reported it to my nissan dealer. they told me i had to drive it in when this was happening. then 04/24/13 & 04/30/13 the problem recurred. on 04/24/13, i was driving 40 mph at the time that i attempted to brake. on 04/30/13, i was right by an auto zone when it happened. they read the code while lights were on, and said the code was 1179. again, the same lights were on, and again, they turned off after restarting the car. i called nissan service who told me again that they need to read the code with lights on. they stated 1179 "meant nothing to them" because it wasn't done at a nissan dealer. i called nissan consumer affairs who said they didn't know anything of this problem. 08/18/13 recurrence of same issue while driving downtown chicago in stop and go traffic. brought it in with no lights on to nissan service (who have said i need the lights on to see what was wrong). now all of a sudden they are telling me i need brake booster and to reprogram abs = $1100. that should correct the problem, should is what they said at service. i called #2 nissan service, who told me i just need the brake booster replaced. called a third dealer, they stated i just needed the abs reprogrammed. *jb

Brakes stopped working! brake light came on when i tried to come to a stop i had maybe 20% brake usage. if i had not noticed the light coming on and had to stop in an emergency would have crashed for sure! i have 3 kids, a great grandmother and 2 other kids that i watch 5 days a week. these will be a tragedy if the problem is not fixed. i have taken it to the dealer a number of times to be told there is no problem. only for it to keep happening. please help us a force nissan to recall these models and repair so that we can be safe on our roads. *tr

nissan armada (and titan which is identical mechanically) has a known problem with it's front brakes being undersized in the early models of said vehicles (model years 2004-2006). this can easily be confirmed by nissan's three changes they have made to the front brakes of these vehicles even though the vehicles have essentially remained unchanged from years 2004 right up though the current model year 2015. they first changed the rotor thickness, then the rotor diameter (320mm to 350mm) and the calipers/torque members/brake hoses, then finally they changed the inner hub diameter of the rotor due to an increase in the hub/bearing size (82mm to 90mm). nissan had issued at least one tsb about this problem but they never issued a recall which is what they should have done. the core issue is that these rather large full size suv's and pickup trucks were designed initially with front brakes that were severely undersized for the weight/size of the vehicle. this led to the vehicles rotors easily overheating and glazing the brake pads which then led to hot spotted, warped, or otherwise ruined front rotors and pads. another symptom (that i believe it caused and the most dangerous part) is that especially in the warmer months the overheating of the rotors would cause the anti lock front brake system sensors (located within the front wheel hub) to trigger (false positive) randomly and you would dangerously lose control of the vehicles ability to brake (and steer) safely. turning the vehicle off momentarily and restarting would "clear" the problem but never the less extremely unsafe. i have contacted nissan of north america customer service and informed them of this but they are unwilling to help other than to tell me to take it to a dealer at my own cost. i said i would be happy to do so if they covered the cost of the "diagnostics" but they refused. *tr

Brake light comes on and a springing clutter noise happens. i stop the car, turn it off and turn back again it's back to normal. it happens practically once a month or so but always scary. dealership claims it's finding nothing. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the brake lights illuminated and the brake pedal failed to respond. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. ..updated 08-25-14 *bf the consumer stated the failure was within the delta stroke sensor. updated 08/28/2014 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact attempted to apply the brakes to avoid a crash with an oncoming vehicle. the contact stated that the brake warning light illuminated and the vehicle crashed into the oncoming vehicle. there were no injuries. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was unavailable. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

While driving my 04 armada, the red brake light on the dash lit up. when i tried to stop and investigate the problem the brake pedal pulsed and the abs system activated, as indicated by the grinding noises under the hood. not truly grinding but that is the best way to describe what an abs system sounds like when active. this happens sporadically. could happen a few times in a day or it may not happen for weeks or months. the dealership claims to know nothing of the issue which makes me very suspicious. this is a fairly well known issue. they want to charge hundreds of dollars for diagnostic service for a problem i am sure they know how to fix. meanwhile my vehicle may be very unsafe to drive and i have no other alternative as i cannot afford repairs, since they will not recall the vehicle, and i cannot afford to replace it. *tr

While leaving work, i was traveling about 20mph when i applied the brakes and the truck would not stop. the brake pedal went to the floor, i heard a grinding noise and the brake light came on. the truck finally came to a stop after i pulled over to the side. i turned the truck off for about 30 seconds and restarted it, the brake light went off and the truck started to brake normally. i took it in to the dealership and they told me they did not find anything wrong. i have owned my truck for several years and it has continued to perform this way periodically(2 times a month). this is very dangerous and i pray everytime we drive it. nissan has yet to do anything about this. for this reason, i will never purchase another nissan product. *tr

While my wife was taking our kid to school, the brake light came on, and as she pressed on the brakes a grinding noise was heard and the truck was having a hard time stopping. luckily, she was far behind from any car or she would have hit someone. as soon as you turn off the vehicle, the problem goes away for a while. we have been fighting this for a while now. we took it to nissan the first time and they couldn't find anything wrong. last year, i decided to take it again to nissan when the problem reappeared and they told me that they had to reprogram the computer but since it was out of warranty i would have to pay. funny how as soon as the warranty had expired, they had a fix. i went ahead and pay thinking that would fix it. it's happened again several times and we normally just stop, turn off the vehicle and problem goes away. i finally decided to write this complaint since nissan does not appear or is unwilling to fix the problem. *tr

I was coming up on an intersection and the truck didn't stop, so i turn to the left and had a head on collision with another truck. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the brakes where applied and an abnormal noise emitted and the brake warning lights illuminated. the failure occurred sporadically. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer who could not diagnose the problem. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

On many occasions while driving my nissan armada, upon braking, the brakes appear to be giving out. the slip brake light along with the brake light will come on. it happens quite often when it's raining, but has also happened when it's perfect weather. i haven't noticed found any recall notices, but is desperately in need of having my brakes repaired. can't afford to have brakes repaired myself and honestly wouldn't know what to have repaired. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake warning lamp illuminated and she was unable to engage the brakes. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 100,000. the consumer stated the emergency brake light would randomly illuminate. updated 08/16/12

When this first happened there was no pressure in the brake pedal when attempting to stop. the pedal shakes harshly and a grinding noise can be heard. the pedal itself goes to the floor as if all the brake fluid in the system is gone. when this happens, there is no warning that the condition exist except for a "brake" light warning in the instrument panel. however this does not help, because every time that this problem has occurred, the vehicle is in motion already. the light might as well state "get ready to crash". the brakes stay like that until the vehicle is turned off and then back on. this has happened at least 10 times since then, in different climates and times. i have changed brake discs and pads and topped the fluid off thinking maybe a difference in pressure was caused by the fluid or the amount of material that was left on the braking surfaces; this is not the case. numerous posts on the internet have pointed this exact failure out and a few owners have been in accidents according to the posts on armada specific websites. nissan has always had issues with the brakes on this model. the first issue was with the front rotors being too small for the size of the vehicle, causing premature warping due to heat. i had this fixed a few times at the dealership as well as having to replace them myself a few times. this was a design flaw on nissan's part. the same is with the root cause of the brake booster failure; bad design. *tr

Over the last few years my brake light comes on and brakes fail. this is a large suv, it is and will be fatal to not fix this problem. i have taken it to the dealer on numerous occasions for them to tell me that the can not find anything wrong with it. we have replaced the brakes alot to help the problem, still with no results. now i am being told it is a brake booster sensor that needs to be replaced. i have researched and their are 1,000's + of people having the same issue. please look out for the safety of us consumers and force nissan to recall the 2004-2006 models of pathfinder armadas. help before someone is seriously injured or killed. the brakes do not work properly!!!! if you turn the vehicle off and then restart the engine, it magically goes away- for a little while. but, the problem always returns. *tr

Fuel gauge not working correctly leaving you stranded while reading 1/4 tank of gas, brakes fail forcing you to pull over and turn off truck pull out key then restart, seat belts do not retract getting caught in door when closing. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that the fuel gauge did not register the correct amount of fuel in the vehicle. the vehicle stalled while registering 1/4 of a tank. in addition, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when depressed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or independent mechanic for the acceleration or fuel gauge issues. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the brake pedal issue; however, the failure could not be replicated. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 203,000. updated 09/28/16*lj *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the braking system malfunctioned, increasing the stopping distance of the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the dealer stated that the brake booster was defective. the contact did not have the brake booster replaced. the contact previously took the vehicle to the dealer regarding a braking issue and the dealer could not identify the problem. the failure mileage was 72,235.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the brakes failed to engage and the brake warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that failure occurred several times and at one point the contact had to crash into a tree in order to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact depressed the brake pedal and the pedal dropped to the floor board. the contact was able to stop the vehicle. the brakes performed as normal once he restarted the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer about six different times for a diagnostic test. the technician stated that the master cylinder sensor, the rotors, and the battery would have to be replaced. brake fluid was also added to the vehicle. the failure continued after the repairs. the vehicle was not repaired a second time. the approximate failure mileage was 6,000.

On multiple occasions at a variety of speeds the brakes on the 2004 nissan armada seem to fail. the brake light comes on in the dash, the brake pedal then pulses like the abs is on however the brake power is extremely diminished. the "fix" is to stop the vehicle and shut it off. if you do this, the brakes return to normal. that works if an urgent stop is not needed. should you need to stop urgently a crash will surely result. on my armada, this has happened about 10-15 times, i purchased it new so i'm the original and only owner. i have found multiple reports online about this same thing happening. it happened to me this week which made me research the issue a bit. months go by with no problem but it only takes one to cause a serious crash. nissan needs to resolve this problem and issue a safety recall. *js

On multiple occasions at a variety of speeds the brakes on the 2004 nissan armada seem to fail. the brake light comes on in the dash, the brake pedal then pulses like the abs is on however the brake power is extremely diminished. the "fix" is to stop the vehicle and shut it off, sometimes for 5-10 minutes. if you do this, the brakes return to normal. should you need to stop urgently a crash will surely result. on my armada, this has happened about 15-20 times, i purchased it new so i'm the original and only owner. it happened to me this week. months go by with no problem but it only takes one to cause a serious crash. nissan needs to resolve this problem and issue a safety recall. i love this vehicle and paid alot of money for it. i would expect nissan to recall and correct this very serious issue that hundreds if not thousands of owners are experiencing. *tt

The brake light will go on while the car is in motion. when the brake is applied at this time there is a significant loss of breaking power as well as a grinding and jerking motion. it is extremely difficult to bring the vehicle to a stop. i have also noticed that if i turn on the vehicle and leave it in part position for 10 minutes or so, the brake light will also go on. if i put the car into drive, the same loss of braking power occurs. i have experienced the loss of braking power in various situations from going 75 miles on the freeway to as little as bringing the car out of parked position. there are many complaints with the same loss of power and nissan has failed to issue a recall. *tr

I purchased a brand new nissan armada back in 2004. starting around 2006 i had a brake failure issue. the emergency light comes on unexpectedly and the brakes would not apply properly. you can hear a grinding, cranking, spring noise when "trying" to stop the behemoth vehicle. i took the car in to several nissan dealers (while it was under warranty) but they all could not find anything wrong because... it was not happening at the time i took it in. this went on for years and years!!! how can i get it fixed under warranty, if the nissan dealership can't tell me the problem? recently nissan then advised me to do a diagnostic check. so after paying $115 out of pocket to prove something is wrong, they told me that the master cylinder booster sensor was "defective". so i let nissan north america know about the "defect" and of course their response was "your vehicle is no longer under warranty". how heinous of a company can nissan be? not care for the thousands of drivers including their families (it is a family car) and others who are at risk of being injured or killed because of this defect! on top of that they know about the issue! they have sold me a vehicle with defective parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they need to be fined and be accountable and fix the defective problem for all the consumers who are going through this terrible stressful issue not knowing when your vehicle cannot brake! this is a big safety and liability issue that needs to be fixed and addressed by nissan asap. *tr

Multiple issues with the brake system rotors, pads, calibers, sensors, brake booster. nissan acknowledge issues and extends brake warranty but not for long enough and does not address the problem since it continues to re-occur. *tr

I have issues with my brakes on a frequent basis. since i purchased my car, i have been having this issue. i have taken my car to several nissan dealers. when my car was under warranty and i would also get the run around. i have been told my nissan that unless the issue happens when the car is in the shop then they are unable to diagnose the problem. when i apply the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor and i hear a loud grinding noise from the front of the vehicle. this happens while i am driving. the only way to get it to work is if turn off the truck while cruising and turn it back on while cruising and it fixes the issue and i am able to stop fine. i have contacted nissan before and they failed to help me. i have two small children. this issue is happening with several people. the nissan armada 2004 was the first armada model, which this issue is a factory defect that is impacting hundreds of car owners. this issue needs to be taken seriously, since brakes is life threatening. *tr

Brake jutter, grinding, shaking when braking. abs vdl slip brake lights up on dash--unable to turn off. stopping vehicle and restarting corrects the problem sometimes; other times the light stays on. brake pads originally replaced early after purchase in 2005 when the vehicle was still under warranty. the vehicle is rarely driven--there is approximately 36k miles on the vehicle--but the problem has been persistent over the years when driven. lately, i have been driving the vehicle more often and the problem is continuing and it is more apparent that there is a problem with the vehicle brakes. i am also experiencing problems with the lift gate as it recently stopped functioning when pressing the key fob or either of the switches inside the vehicle. i began opening and closing the lift gate manually and now it will not close securely, i.e., it is not getting that final seal when closed. in addition, the front passenger window no longer goes up or down and does not work when using the driver's or passenger switch. finally, the driver's seat does not reset to the position programmed when the engine starts and turns off. i decided to research the internet today and was quite surprised to see that there are so many others who are experiencing the same problem with their 2004 amada. called a local nissan dealer today and they were well aware of the problem. just as so many have written all over the internet, the dealer suggest that you bring the vehicle in when the brake light issue is displayed so that they can perform diagnostic test. *tr

Nissan armada has a known problem with it's front brakes being undersized in the early models of said vehicles (model years 2004-2006). several times have had issues with brakes not respoding and lost control of vehicle. this is caused by undersized breaks. not having proper sized brakes has led to rotors easily overheating and glazing the brake pads which then led to hot spotted, warped, or otherwise ruined front rotors and pads. the greatest unsafe symptom is that especially in the warmer months the overheating of the rotors would cause the anti-lock front brake system sensors to trigger (false positive) randomly and you would dangerously lose control of the vehicles ability to brake (and steer) safely. *tr

Brakes "judder" once every 6 or so months. the judder manifests itself as a partial engagement of brakes, and a rapid feedback on the brake pedal. i have learned over time that i need to pull over immediately, park the car, and repeatedly jam down the pedal, (as if pumping up the brake fluid pressure). turn off the engine and restart. first time it happened i took it to the dealer, but they could not reproduce it and the car was still too new for them to have heard of it before. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, the brakes were applied and failed to respond as the brake warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that failure would recur intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000 and the current mileage was 75,600.

When i first purchased car the brakes went out at 3000 miles and i've continued to have a problem ever since.nissan fixed the brake judder but another issue arose.now whenever it wants the brakes just go out.i've had the car in the shop multiple times for this problem.i have to shut car off and restart as if some electrical component is resetting.this has never been fixed and now i'm out of warranty.nissan can't find the problem or just doesn't want to take the time to fix.this is leading to a very unsafe vehicle because there is no telling when it will happen again. *js
