Problems with 2004 Nissan Armada SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2004 Nissan Armada starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 105 192 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2004 Nissan Armada

On multiple occasions, when hitting the brakes, the brake light would come on. the brake pedal becomes soft and springy, lose about 50-75% of the braking power of the vehicle. i am afraid that this would happen while my wife is driving, and this may cause her to panic and have an accident. *tr

I was pulling out of the gas station, when i applied the brake it began making a popping sound, the pedal went all the way to the floor and brake light came on. it almost caused an accident. i pulled over turned it off then turned it back on and the brake light went off. i was able to drive home with no other issues. today i was backing out of the driveway and the same thing happened. there is something wrong with the brake system. i can't believe something hasn't been done with all of the similar complaints. i went to get it checked and they can't find the issue. please look into this before a fatality occurs. *tr

Brake light came on and brakes made a springing sound and car wouldn't stop!!! it's the delta stroke sensor and this is not first complaint. these vehicles need to be recalled. they r a death trap!!! someone is gonna be seriously hurt or killed! *tr

Driving on surface streets going approximately 35 mph when a thud sound came from under the car and the brakes when pressed screetched and were mushy and not effectively stopping the car, in addition the parking brake light on the dash light up but was not engaged. i was able to pull to the side of the road and come to a stop by repeatily lightly pushing on the brake and just letting the momentum of the car die down. once stopped i turned off the car and looked under the car for any sign of damage or leaks and popped the hood of the car to do the same. found no evidance of any damage or problems. when i turned on the car the light on the dash was off and the brakes when pressed became hard and no sound came from the brakes and the brakes worked as they should. *tr

Amazing how many complaints on the armadas "without warning" brake failure and yet still no investigation? is it because of the class action suit against nissan for this very thing? are you not responsible for the safety of people? i thought that was the purpose of this organization. disappointing that you are still waiting for someone to die before anything is done. *tr

Wife was driving on dry pavement, approaching turn. brakes gave a grinding sound and failed almost completely. she was barely able to make the turn and enter a parking lot where it eventually slowed to a stop. *tr

I was approaching an intersection with a stop light what was red. there were 4 cars ahead of me. when i applied the brakes, my feet also hit the accelerator pedal at the same time. the car jumped forward and hit the car in front of me and also pushed it into another car resulting in a multi car accident. my car sustained minor damage but two of the other cars had significant damage. this was the second time that this occurred to me with this vehicle. the other time was a similar situation where i was approaching a stop sign. fortunately, no one was in front of me. in both incidents, i was wearing western style boots. but it could have easily happened with work boots. i believe that the placement of the brake pedal is too close to the accelerator pedal. this vehicle also has adjustable brake pedals, which could also be a contributing factor. *tr

Was driving vehicle 35 mph slowed down to go around sharp curve. when vehicle drove around curve there were vehicles in front of us that stopped suddenly. applied brakes and pedal pulsed and required alot of effort to slow down. was unable to slow vehicle down fast enough and rear ended vehicle in front of us. caused a 3 car pileup. the 3 passengers in our 04 armada suffered whiplash, the driver sprained her wrist and was out of work for 3 days because of accident. the nissan armada was totaled and had to purchase another vehicle. the brakes not working correctly is what caused the accident. *tr

I have had the same problem in regards to the nissan armada brake light coming on without warning during driving. this has happened numerous times while on and off the freeway. i would turn the engine off and then back on and the brakes light would go off, resetting the braking system to normal function. this last time was enough and i finally took it into nissan and they told me that it's a common problem with the brake booster, and it would be over $1000 to fix!! nissan needs to be held responsible for this faulty sensor or part. its extremely dangerous to drive this vehicle under these conditions. thank goodness my wife and infant daughter have never been in the vehicle whenever this happened. do better nissan, i've had no other problems with the vehicle other than this. *tr

Alot of times while pressing the brakes you here a noise, scrubbing, brake pads goes to the bottom of the floor , lights come on and unable to stop properly have to turn the car off to get the lights to go away this could cause serious problems being unable to stop

I was driving on the freeway and my emergency brake light came on. as i exited off the freeway and tried to stop the brakes were making a terrible noise and failed me. it was very frightening as my car was not able to stop at all, thankfully i was able to use the transmission to slow the car by dropping down to first gear. i had my 2 children in the car and thankfully we were not in an accident although was very close as there were cars in front of me stopped at a light. when i came home we checked the brake fluid and pads and both were fine. when we turned off the car and turned it back on everything was fine and the problem did not reoccur. i have my car maintenance very regularly and this problem stumped our normal mechanic. i have since learned that this is a common occurrence among vehicles like mine and is apparently the break booster which nissan will fix for $800. this is very disturbing that a car can lose complete control of its ability to break just like that with absolutely no warning then after i turn if off and back on be just fine. i believe this is a dangerous problem and the manufacturer needs to deal with this problem immediately before someone is seriously injured. i have no problem fixing the break booster but how is nissan able to insure me this problem will not happen again? i feel very unsafe knowing at any time it could re occur. *tr

2004 nissan armada brake issue. driving down the road and the brakes start grinding and its hard to stop. then the e brake light comes on. once i get pulled over and restart the vehicle it seems to be fine. this has happened twice getting very nervous to drive the vehicle. worried about towing or high speeds this could be fatal. *jb

While driving in traffic at 35 mph i pressed the brakes and they went all the way to the floor and the brake light came on. i turned the vehicle off and on and the brake light went off and the brakes recovered. shortly after the brakes did the same thing again and i almost crashed into someone but was able to swerve. *tr

While applying brakes, i noticed the brake light on the dash came on and that was followed by a serious reduction in braking power, shuttering, grinding and pulsing of the brake pedal. this continued until the car was stopped and turned off and then restarted. i almost rear ended a vehicle but was able to make a right turn at fairly high speed to avoid traffic. i have researched this all day and found that many armada's in my year range are having the same exact problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated while traveling at any speed, the abs sensor illuminated and there was a loud springing sound intermittently coming from the brakes. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the technician cleared the computer for the vdc code, replaced the ball bearings and the differential housing. the failure recurred. the contact had to continuously turn off the vehicle and restart it in order to reset the abs sensor and the vdc sensor to no avail. the vehicle was to be inspected, diagnosed and repaired. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign id numbers: 07e046000 (equipment). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 108,000. pam updated 8/11/14*cn

2004 nissan armada brake issue. driving down the road and the brakes start grinding and its hard to stop, emergency brake light comes on. once i am able to slow down and pull over, i then restart the vehicle and the brakes go back to performing normally. this has happened numerous times since purchasing the vehicle. this most recent time happened while towing a 6500 lb load. thankfully, no one was in front of us. i have done quite a bit of research on the armada and titan forums and they reference ntp06-040 as well as a rather expensive brake booster replacement at close to $1000. this issue seems to be rather prevalent with the armada model. the biggest issue is there is no warning when this issue will occur and i am a bit worried that it may cause an accident and/or injury. *jb

While driving, the brake light came on and when i pressed on the brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor and a grinding noise was heard. this has happened before. took it into nissan and i was charged about $100 to reprogram the system. that was supposed to have fixed but apparently it did not. luckily, we haven't been in an accident yet. *tr

As many, many other have stated on the nissan forums, this vehicle has some dangerous braking issues. we have had our armada for about 4 years and have experienced this issue at least nine times. thankfully for us, it has not happened while we were on the freeway at high speeds or in a situation where we had to stop instantly. here is an explanation of our issues: while applying the brake pedal we immediately heard a grinding and popping noise, as well as noises indicating that the abs was activating off and on. the pedal was very soft and kicks back multiple times. the braking effectiveness was severely diminished. we have to pull over, turn the vehicle off and on again before we can continue driving. i find this to be a sever issue which is going to get someone killed, if it has not already. more than a few class action law suites have been filed for this issue in the titan truck, armada and infiniti qx56 as they all share the same platform and parts. *tr

When coming to a stop and applying the brakes, the vehicle lost most of its braking power. the pedal went soft and began pulsating with a grinding noise. the brake light came on. it acted as though the abs system was activated. the brake system stayed in the failed mode until i could pull over and turn the engine off and the computer would reset itself. *tr

For everyone with the brake issue on the nissans 2004-2007. this is a faulty delta stroke sensor and nissan has been aware of it since 2004. i just got off the phone with nissan north america and was declined like everyone else because i am out of warranty. this has nothing to do with warranty. there are over 296 complaints on this website and the nhtsa has done nothing. there is a class action lawsuit for all consumers who own a vehicle with this issue under [xxx]. there is also an attorney for class action against nissan for this issue as well her name is [xxx] at [xxx] law phone number is [xxx] i urge everyone to call her please. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving my 2004 nissan armada le, i went to slow down to make a turn, and my brake pedal went to the floor accompanied by a metallic grinding sound. i downshifted and pumped the brakes to come to a stop, but had very little braking efficiency for the next third of a mile to my house. the brake light has periodically stayed on after the emergency brake was released, but turning the vehicle off and then back on has always reset this condition. after the incident today, the brake light remained lit even after restarting the vehicle. the brake pads, calipers, rotors, pistons, and master cylinder all appear to be in normal condition. i feel that our vehicle has experienced failure of the delta sensor or brake booster, as online forum descriptions of these sudden failures seem consistent with our experience. nissan needs to act quickly to correct this failure to avoid driver injury or death. it appears that there is no open recall as of yet to address the faulty brake booster issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that the brakes failed. the contact had to use the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. the contact spoke to a dealer and was told that a brake sensor may have needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not inspected. the failure and the current mileages were 99,500. *tr

I have had an issue with brakes and lights coming on that says vdo ,antilock etc: when driving the suv at lower speeds and you try to apply the brakes the whole front end starts shaking and grinding and it is impossible to stop. i have replaced brakes, rotors , wheel hub bearings and still have this problem. it is scary when you can't stop a 7,000lb vehicle! i am in fear of an accident . i have read of others having the same problem. sometimes when running hyw speeds a lot of lights come on and dingers and this has been happening since i bought the armada. i want to know what nissan is gonna do about this problem cause it seems i am not the only one having these issues. i have already had to replace the right rear hub assembly 2 times and they are not cheap. i feel nissan does not want admit they have a problem. i think this needs to be a recall . since i have had this vehicle i have not received anything from nissan to address these issues. i pray they will recognize and see to it that these things are fixed and help us the consumer feel safe driving down the highway. i have 3 young children who ride in this armada. please help !!

I have already submitted complaint along with up of 200 others in regards to the faulty delta sensor in the brake booster causing the brakes to fail without warning, nissan knows of this problem and does nothing, i am now prepared to go to abc news with all the information that i am collecting. i hope that they will see that the nhtsa is doing something about all the complaints they have received. i have not seen up to this point any open investigations. i hope someone doesn't have to die first. thank you *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. while at a stop sign, the brake lights illuminated and the vehicle made a loud grinding noise until the vehicle was restarted. in addition, the contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floor when depressed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 60,000.

I was driving in a residential area and i applied the brakes while approaching a stop sign. when i pressed the brakes the brake pedal went down to the ground and a loud grinding noise was heard. the brake light came on and the slip light came on. the cars brakes didn't squeeze tight enough to stop the suv within a safe distance and caused me to run the stop sign. it happened again a few days later while going at a higher rate of speed while approaching a stop light. in order to fix the problem i had to shut down the vehicle and restart it. it has happened a total of three times within three months. *tr

Was traveling down the road at 35mph! tried to stop at stop sign and the brakes failed! car would not stop! had to use the emergency brake!!! *tr

Car wouldn't stop. when i pressed brakes it would rattle and make a sound. i was going about 50mph when i tried slowing down brakes failed ! dealer didn't help at all! *tr

The brakes do no work properly. the abs engages sporadically and the brake light comes on. the braking systems does not work normally and there is a loss of brake function. when the vehicle is turned off, the issue resets and the brakes will work again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the brakes failed without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but they were unable to provide a diagnosis. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. *tr

I was slowing down for a stoplight. applied brakes but little pressure and heard a grinding sound also the brake pedal was spongy. the brake light on the dash was on. *tr

2004 nissan armada has a brake problem. the brake light comes on while driving. i have to turn off truck and turn it back on to reset break light. if i use brakes when light is on the abs does not work, it makes a springy crunching noise when brake is pressed.the pedal went down so easily when it did this. listen. help. i understand that the problem is the call: "brake booster "or "master brake cylinder "is expensive and i check online and notice that many peoples already has this problem and not only 2004, also2005, 2006,2007 ! nissan shall have this in re-call such that's very dangerous i tock the suggestion that write to this very important website thank you !! *tr

The brake light came on and with no warning the brake pedal went to the floor and there was a digital type grinding noise with almost no use of brakes. drove the vehicle to the near dealership and was told that they have been instructed by nissan to reprogram a vdc unit. we were told that if the problem returns we are to need to replace a brake booster $818. so last week problem happened again without warning this time with my 3yr old daughter in the car and i was lucky that it did not result in an accident. $818 is a financial hardship for an obvious huge safety issue with nissan. my understanding of others in the same situation is that the brake booster is not the problem but that the problem lies in the abs but nissan has no interest in the safety of their vehicles or the people driving them. the vehicle is parked as i am too afraid to drive it needing to drive up and down a mountain. i was floored to hear that this has been an ongoing issue with nissan armada owners and nothing has been done for a recall of this issue. i don't want someone to lose their life in order for nissan to fix their problem. please help! *tr

Car involved is a 2004 nissan armada. i was pulling up in front of my son's friend's house to drop him off. my foot was on the brake and i was almost stopped when the car suddenly accelerated forward and hit a chevy truck that was parked in front of me. it lunged forward with such force it pushed the truck forward about 4 feet and the front passenger tire ended up on the curb. there is a lot of damage to both cars. this is the second incident within a 3 month time period. on 1/8/13 while my daughter was pulling into a parking space in a parking garage the car suddenly accelerated and she crashed into a wall. i figured it was a fluke thing and paid my $1000 deductible and they repaired the $8500 worth of damage. i am very concerned because if i would have been slowing down for someone at a crosswalk i would have ran them over. i have a complaint into nissan since this is the second time in 3 months that this has happened. i dont ever want to drive this car again and will not put myself, my family or other innocent people in danger as something is horrible wrong with this car. nissan gave me a case number and i was told someone would call me back. it has been 48 hours and so far i have not heard back. *tr

Pulling out of walmart parking lot and came to a stop sign. so i step on the brake to slow down and the brake pedal had little pressure to barely stop the 6000lbs suv, very scary! also made a grinding or chattering noise from the driver side, and the brake light also came on during that time. took the suv to the dealer to check out the problem and they stated that it could be the delta sensor inside of the brake booster that is bad and stated it also need to be reprogram after that part replacement??? so they told me it will cost $1004.56 out the door to fix that problem. i feel that nissan should be responsible for replacing the defected parts , since there is a lot of owners experiencing the same problems. *tr

Just recently i have had 2 incidents where randomly the brake light would come on and the vehicle would not stop. the vehicle made a horrific sound when applying the brakes and stopping power was probably reduced to about 20%. when the vehicle was turned off and restarted everything was back to normal. luckily both times i was in a parking lot and not traveling fast. if i had been on a highway trying to make a quick stop it could have caused a fatal accident. i had the vehicle repaired at crown nissan in birmingham al. they replaced the delta sensor and brake booster for 900.00+ dollars. it makes me wonder if these components should of been replaced when the brakes where replaced by nissan under recall because of inadequate sized rotors. the delta sensor and brake booster could be inadequate for the new brakes that were put on my vehicle. i opened case xxxx3057 with nissan north america to see if they would assist with the cost of the repair. they denied the claim and wouldn't even send me a follow up in writing after multiple requests. seems they want to hide their decision.

As i pushed on the brakes, there was a grinding sound and the car sort of shook (similar to abs going off, but a little different, and i wasn't slipping). it was very hard for me to stop and the brake pedal felt very squishy. the emergency brake light came on and would not turn off. the problem would not go away until i turned the car off. as soon as i did that, and turned it back on the problem went away. this has happened multiple times since then, with no warning and under many different circumstances. no one can find the problem because it goes away when you turn the car off. *tr

As documented in the nhtsa complaints for multiple models and years. my armada (that i happened to buy for my wife's birthday just 8 months ago), like thousands of other 04-06 armadas, titans, and qx56 has the random abs incident. this is a serious safety concern that i can't believe has not been recalled. nissan knows about it. dealerships know about it. people that have had their complete abs systems replaced are having the problem just a few years down the road. the abs system activates under normal, dry road conditions. the pedal goes to the floor, the vehicle loses almost all braking power, you hear the abs grinding and feel it pulsating the brake pedal. the abs light comes on, some times the "vdc off" and "slip" lights come on. it's documented on vehicle related websites by hundreds of users. www.titantalk.com. www.clubarmada.com. there have been vehicle crashes related to the abs failure, there's probably been deaths (but how will those victims report the failure?)...people have reported having to pull off the highway at high speeds when it happens. people have reported not being able to stop for traffic. people have reported not being able to stop at stop lights and stop signs. but no safety recall. what does it take? i have two young children. they ride in this car. does the nhtsa (and nissan for that matter) not care about the safety of my family and the thousands of other owners with the exact same problem. *tr

Brake lights came on and when i hit the brakes, they made a springy noise and went to the floor. we ran off the road on the interstate because traffic was backed up and slow and was afraid i was going to hit the car in front of me. no damage to any vehicle other than one of my tires blowing due to the rough terrain. *tr

I was driving about 50mph and tried to stop vehicle and it barely stopped and the brakes made a scrubbing sound. i turned the truck off and the brake light went off. this has happened several times sometimes when i first start the vehicle up. *tr

While driving my nissan armada 2004, my brakes light came on, brakes locked up, brakes pedal did not work and there was a loud grinding sound. was very scary for my children, husband and myself. pull my vehicle over to the side as far as i could. brake pedal did not work properly, was as if the vehicle was stopping dead in its tracks, but still moving. put my vehicle in park, turned off ignition and restarted it. brake light went off, no noise and pedal seemed to be working! *tr

I own a 2004 nissan armada le that i have owned since 2004. in 2007, i had an issue with the brakes, brake light coming on, brakes feeling "crunchy", grinding noises and decreased braking power. that issue resolved on its own, but now it is happening again and more often. the brake light comes on, decreased braking power, etc. i have researched the web and found multiple forums where hundreds, if not thousands, of people who own the same vehicle are having the same problems. this is a major safety issue. with so many people having this issue, i feel it is a problem with the design and should be recalled. *tr

I purchased my nissan armada 2004 which has less than 68000 miles on it. recently i have been experiencing many problems with my truck. first, there was a brake recall in 2006 and the dealership replaced the front rotors and brake pads. once again there is a problem with the breaks. i was driving down the highway at 70mph and all of a sudden the brakes failed; luckily i was able to stop the car by using the parking brakes. after this event i took it to the dealership and advised that i needed a new break booster. my issue is that once i told nissan about my problems they informed me that the warranty is expired and they are no longer held accountable. but after doing some research i discovered i am not the only owner of an armada that is having difficulties. http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/armada/18281-armada-brake-problems-dealer-telling-truth.html http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0ffea4/0 i have provided two links that share what other customers are experiencing with the armada. if there are so many people that are having these difficulties nissan should have called for a recall or informed all customers to get trucks fixed of their problems before warranty expires. issues with brakes could result in serious injuries or death. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the brake and vdc warning indicators illuminated until the engine was turned off. the brake pedal was depressed and then traveled to the floor with a loud clunking noise. on a separate occasion, the brakes failed to respond upon engagement. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer five times. the repairs performed on the vehicle consisted of the replacements of the abs control unit, brake booster and master cylinder pressure sensor. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

I have an 04 armada we were driving it a week ago, when we came to a stop sign and the brakes failed. it made a grinding noise, brake lights were on but no brakes very scary for us. this has happened numerous times and nissan told me its the brake booster that's failing but it is not under warranty and therefore not covered. researching this there is hundreds if not thousands of the same brake issue with these armadas. *tr

Applied brakes , brake light went on abs stopped working, brakes groan. they work at 10 %. please see youtube enter armada brake system problem. there are 100's of complaints for the exact same failure. there is a problem in the brake booster. once you shut off the vehicle and restart it the abs resets until the next occurrence. this has occurred many times over the years, this system failure will cause death if not addressed. *jb

Pulled out of driveway, put it in forward gear, heard a metal clicking noise. went maybe 30 yards to the no outlet stop sign of our road and brake light came on in the dash, pressed down on the brake pedal to stop at the stop sign and the brakes started to surge. i did stop way before the sign but was scary. stopped and shut the vehicle off and looked at it. started up and light went off. drove 5 blocks and coming to a street light at a busy state road and brake light came on again, brakes started surging on the decline of the road and i finally came to a stop maybe 5 feet before going out into the busy intersection of the street light. i have read many 2004/2005's having this issue once i did some research but nothing has been done for a recall except classification br06-007 & reference ntb06-040. there is definitely an issue nissan needs to solve and have a recall done! *tr

This is the 3rd time the brakes have failed since i purchased the used 2004 armada about 1.5yrs ago. the armada when purchased had approximately 123,000 miles on it. not long after i purchased while driving at 50mph the brake pedal went soft the brakes were at approximately 5% and there was an electrical grinding noise. after turning the vehicle off and on again the problem went away. i took the vehicle to nissan and was told that the rotors needed to be replaced because they were so thin the brake pads were having trouble gripping them and that was confusing the abs which is what i was hearing. i was also told the brake software needed to be updated at additional cost. i paid for everything to be done only to have the problem again a couple months later while driving slowly on a gravel surface. i contacted the dealer again and was told just to turn the vehicle on and off again and if it happens again to bring it in. while driving through a shopping center parking lot it happened again. brakes go out, peddle goes soft and electrical noise. i took the armada to the dealer again and was told this time the brake fluid needed to be replaced. i asked why wasn't that done when all the other work was performed only a few thousand miles earlier. they said it was not part of the work to replace the brakes. i paid to have the brake fluid replaced. recalls have been done on 2004 armadas for brake issues in the past, during my last visit to nissan i was told the module that controls all the braking system in my vehicle could be bad which may need to be replaced. i have to wait until my brakes fail again before they supposedly will know. nissan knows there are problems still with the 2004 armada braking system and should be made to recall them all to fix them. *tr

On june 6, 2012, while traveling approximately 10 mph i applied the brakes to stop and the pedal hit the floor, there was little or no resistance on the brake pedal and i heard crunching, metal on metal sound. also, the vdc off, slip and abs lights were on. i immediately pulled over, turned the truck off and on to reset it, and it worked, however, i began to travel a few miles and it happened again. i went to a local service station and code c1179 delta stroke sensor popped up. the technician test drove the truck and it ran well with no problems. the truck was fine until june 13, 2012, while leaving the supermarket it happened again. i was traveling no more than 10 mph and the brakes failed. i tried to reset it as i did before, however this time it didn't work. i had to turn the car off and on several times in order for it to reset. once it was reset, i began to drive home and it happened again. so again, i pulled over to reset it and after several attempts it worked. this issue is very unsettling due to the fact that i have small children. this is my only method of transportation and i need this resolved as soon as possible.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan armada. while traveling 30 mph, the contact applied the brakes and noticed that the stopping power had decreased. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. the current and the failure mileages were 90,000.
