Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Nissan Altima

Owner of 2005 nissan altima. two weeks ago mechanic had up on rack for oil change. brought to my attention significant rusting of both driver and passenger side floor pans. i called nissan and filed a claim, but vehicle is out of warranty. while they were sorry to hear i was having this problem, they would not help me. the nissan representative i talked to said he had never heard of this problem before. i don't believe that due to the number of posts on nhtsb website and other blogs. it is a design flaw that leads to a safety issue. i think nissan should stand behind this repair. *tr

Recently while getting new tires installed at a tire shop, i was informed by the service technician that there was floor pan rust on both the driver and passenger side of my car. this rust couldn't of happened overnight since the rust is about to break through the carpet as if it were a 15-20 yr. old car. the rust is located in the same spot on each side by the driver and passenger floor mats. on a shop lift you can see that the rust initially formed on each side where the drain holes were installed. at nissan's request, i took my car (bought new) to the nearest nissan for inspection. my complaint with nissan corporate was that there should be a recall on floor pan rust as it is a safety concern i.e the seat can malfunction and also carbon dioxide could get inside the car. i also mentioned that i was aware any kind of rust was out of warranty and that the reason for the rust has nothing to do with living in high salt state. after extensive research, it became apparent that this has to be a design flaw by nissan and that there are thousands of complaints on mainly 2nd gen. altimas having this adv. floor pan rust in the exact same areas!! if the rust was sporadic, then salt would most likely be a cause, and if wet snowy shoes was the problem then there would be rust under the rear floor pans. as a result, as noted on the nissan forum website, a more valid cause is design flaw, drain holes were improperly installed allowing water to congregate and rust to form. after nissan investigated my file, they stated that there was nothing they could do to help. not even partial reimbursement. i find this unbelievable and unacceptable.this 2nd generation altima floor pan rust is so common that even my neighbor's 05 altima has the same rust spots as well. what also disappoints me is that i have had all of my oil changes done by nissan and rust was never mentioned once.

Went to get my first inspection after purchasing the car and it failed and i could not get sticker. it failed because i have large rust holes on both the drivers and passengers side floor pans. on the driver side, the carpet is exposed to the underside of the vehicle which presents a safety risk as my foot could go through it while driving. *tr

I just discovered that the floor boards of both passenger and driver side in the bottom is fully rusted. it seems after looking on line that i am not the only owner of the 2005 altima with the same issue in which could lead to a safety problem with the structural integrity of the vehicle. *tr

Vehicle was in for repair at local automotive repair shop for crankshaft position sensor replacement. during repair, mechanic had vehicle up on lift and noted severe rust to the floorboard area of both driver and passenger side. rust damage is so severe it is rusted all the way completely through. upon my personal investigation via the internet, i found numerous complaints from other individuals noting the same severe rust damage to the same location (floorboard) of their nissan altimas as well. it is my opinion that this is a safety issue and should be addressed immediately by nissan.

I have a 2005 nissan altima that i bought in 2008 and has had nothing but problems, first had to replace the steering knuckle because the steering was going out ($400) than had to replace the motor mounts, struts, inner/outer tie rods, i have no heat when at idle, while putting new tires on again, i also learned my floor boards are almost rusted through, and now i can not even drive my car because about 3 weeks ago it started sucking down oil ( 4 qts within a 3-6 hour time frame) and it's smoking bad out the tail pipe because of the head gasket/piston rings caused by a faulty pre-cat, and told i need to replace the engine. i see there is a recall for the 2.5l engine for this issue but on a 2006 model, what about my 2005 model with same engine?? searching the internet i find hundreds if not thousands of people having this same issues in 2002-2006 altima's, obviously there is a problem with these engines and nissan should be held accountable!! *tr

The wheel well liner on the front passenger side came loose and after flapping against the tire, road, and engine compartment; became totally disconnected and fell onto a county highway. it was replaced by a nissan dealership's mechanics, and three months later the same thing happened on a city street! *tr

I am original owner of a 2005 altima. we recently discovered both the driver and passenger side floorboards are rusted out/through. this car has been well cared for and this is a major concern and safety issue. i have researched this and seen numerous on-line blogs and formal complaints filed to nhtsa on the same issue for nissan owners. i did personally contact nissan consumer affairs and filed a claim with them on this matter. they very politely turned me down on any support for the structural issue and said the car is too old (7 yrs) and not under warranty anymore. the quote to fix this issue is $1,100.00 that i don't have and i am very disappointed in nissan to not stand behind this structural issue. i hope the nhtsa can help me in this matter and other owners facing the same problem. thank you *tr

My 2005 nissan altima floor board is badly rusted. i cannot pass the state inspection and it will cost me so much money to fix my car just to pass the inspection. i did some research on line and i see that most 2005 model has this issue. i feel that the dealer needs to do a recall and fix this problem immediately. i will most definitely not recommend this make and model to anyone else. *tr

In 2013 i took my car to an auto body shop to have them fix my bumper and they realized a hole underneath my passenger floor . they told me it was completely rotted through and i had the problem fixed at the cost 700 dollars. now its 2015 and i'm having the same problem all over again. i don't really want to put this money back into this car if it's just going to happen again 2 years. nissan really needs to figure out what they're going to do with this problem. i see a lot of other people having the same problem and they're doing nothing about it this is a safety concern someone could possibly fall through the floor.

Severe rusting on driver and passenger floorboards that is resulting in weakened frame and structure. need help getting nissan to fix this know issue with this make and model. thank you. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the driver's side floorboard would become wet whenever it would rain. the contact ran water down the windshield and opened the hood to see if water was entering through the dashboard area, but to no avail. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage 134,000. *tr

When i wen't to trade my car for a new one i was told by the dealer they wern't interested in my car because of rusted floor boards.they said this was a problem with nisan altimas and there should have been a recall.why wasn't nisan required to have a recall since this is a serious safty problem with altimas?other nisan cars don't seem to have this problem.now i fear for my families safty when i drive this car. *tr

My floor of my car has rusted out. i have taken my car to nissan for regular maintenance at the dealership where it was purchased. the floorboard has rusted so bad it is not safe to put anyone in the passenger seat. this car is well cared for, garaged nightly, washed weekly and all maintenance appointments kept. it has one driver over age 60 so it is not used for speed or derby driving. i did not build this car and as i am not an auto service person would have no way of knowing that my undercarriage and floorboards were rusted to the point of being a safety hazard. they have placed my car on the blocks and lifted every time yet never told me there was a problem. this is negligence of the highest form and they did not want to cover this under warranty so they remained silent about a known safety issue. as a layperson i have been fraud and my safety jeopardized for the sake of saving a few dollars. i will now take this problem public to any and everyone who will listen. i ask and encourage the nhtsa to hear the complaints of consumers and require nissan make this right. obviously these floorboards were not treated for rust protection. i am not a litigious person but will now seek to become one as a result of this grave act of negligence. *tr

Floor boards on both driver's and passenger's side severely corroded; affected area ~8x12 inches. boards and sheet metal rusted through completely on both driver's and passenger's side, forming ~2x2 inch holes. *tr

fully rusted driver and passenger floor boards. can see interior rug underneath vehicle. have done a lot of research and this appears to be a known issue with nissan from 2002 and 2005 related to cars in salt states. have seen many comments that defective steel was used. we have been advised that the structural integrity of our car is compromised. dealer wants $1200 to cut out rotted floor boards and weld in new floor panels. have contacted nissan customer care and opened case. regional manager called and refuses to offer any coverage for this issue. also, nissan as a corporation has decided that they are not going to offer any assistance to owners with this widespread problem. *tr

Vehicle floor under body below passenger and driver seat has rusted and about to get a hole. i called nissan service center and they say its not in warranty. but its a safety issue and the model is just 7 years old with 89000 miles on it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that while the vehicle was having routine maintenance performed by an authorized dealer, it was found that the front passenger and driver side floor boards were severely rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the failure and current mileages were 65,000.

Floor board on passenger side front has rusted out. car is always washed, and this is the only signs of abnormal rust on the car. *tr

I took my vehicle for an oil change and the technician showed me that my floor boards under my driver and passenger side seats were rusted out and forming holes into the cabin of my car. he was able to poke all the way through and push up my carpet on my driver side floor. i was issued a factory recall around 2008 from nissan about living in a road salted state (nj) and the undercarriage needed to be replace. i brought my car in for the recall in nov 2009. it seems they did not replace all the affected areas. i contacted nissan today via their 1-800 # and was told there was no longer a warranty or recall out for my vehicle concerning this issue. i drive the nissan as my main transportation for my children and i can not afford to fix this issue out of my own pocket. it is unsafe and unexpected from a 7 year old car purchase brand new. *tr

I took my car in to get an oil change. while my car was on the lift we noticed a huge rust spot under the passenger side. they were able to easily put a screwdriver inside the hole and it lifted my carpet. and what i don't understand is that one month earlier my car was in the shop putting on new tierods and bushings, and there was no rust at all. so in one month the undercoating was gone and a huge rust hole appeared. i took my car to the dealer and they said my warranty was over and it would be about $900 to fix. this is crazy. i've never had any major problems with this car and it only has 62,000 on it. nissan needs to make this a recall because this is happening to alot of the altimas. this is a major safety problem. and if this is not resolved i will no longer be buying from nissan. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken for a routine oil change when the mechanic advised her that there were holes in the front driver and passenger side floorboards. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that they would not assist with the repair costs. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and the current mileages were 107,000. updated 11/27/12*lj the consumer stated there are wholes on equal places on both the driver and passenger's side floor board. updated 11/28/2012 *js

I noticed a loose piece of hanging metal from underneath the front passenger side of my 2005 nissan altima. i looked underneath and quickly found that approximately an 8" x 20" floorboard section behind the front right wheel was completely rusted out and crumbled to the ground upon touching it. the approximate mileage is 135,000 miles. this appears to be a common complaint with this make and model and nissan needs to acknowledge that this is a manufacturing defect. it is expected this would be an issue 40 years ago, but not with today's cars. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that after exiting the vehicle, she noticed that her pants had become wet. after inspecting the vehicle she noticed that there were holes in the frame under the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the frame was corroded. the corrosion was so severe that the vehicle was deemed as unsafe to drive. the dealer was notified but offered no assistance. the manufacturer was notified and advised that the corrosion failure was to be expected because she resided in the new england area. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 64,000.

I was changing the oil on my 2005 nissan altima and realized the floorboards are nearly completely rusted through. i lifted the carpet inside the cabin and realized it is rusted through. i had my oil changed at the local nissan dealership for oil changes. when i inquired about the floorboards they stated nissan altima 2005 had a 5 year corrosive warranty for the underbody and it is out of warranty for this repair. i am concerned of the safety of driving this model. the rusted floorboards are near the front driver seats. i am also concerned because of water or mold near the front floor vents could enter the cabin through the rusted floorboards. the fort wayne nissan stated they did not notice this rust during my oil changes. i began changing my oil when the car was just out of warranty. i immediately realized the rusty floorboards. this is a common problem in all 2002-2005 nissan altima problems. i would like nissan of north america to address and resolve this issue. *tr

When having my oil changed the garage noted extreme root on the front drivers and passenger floor boards. the mechanic informed me that they could see the interior carpeting that would allow exhaust fumes to leak into the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front floorboards were completely rusted and the ground was visible through a substantially sized hole. the contact also stated that the interior and exterior of the vehicle was in excellent condition. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who stated that the floorboards would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. updated 8/22/12 *cn status update. 09/12/12

The floor is all rusted out and will not pass inspection. *tr

I had discovered the floor on the passenger side of my altima rusting through from the inside. when originally purchased new the auto was discover to have a water leak soaking the carpeting on the drivers side and the passenger side of the car. nissan (dealer) had indicated that they found the source of the leak but evidently had not with the floor rusting through from the inside of the vehicle as stated. it seems after looking on line that i am not the only owner of the 2005 altima with the same issue in which could lead to a safety problem with the structural integrity of the vehicle.

I own a 2005 nissan altima. i currently had an oil change at a local garage and was informed that my floor boards are rusted with holes starting to form. my car only has 85,000 miles and is kept in the garage and washed often. this is the only spot on my car that i have any rust. i contacted nissan about this issue and was informed that this is a common issue with the altimas. i had just had a sticker put on by nissan and also a 72 point inspection and was never informed by them that there was holes underneath my car! nissan said they would go half on the cost of repairing both front floorboards which would cost me $400.00 which i do not have. my main concern for this issue is come winter time, i will have holes through my floorboards and with two small children in my car, i am extremely conserned about having toxic fumes enter into my car which could lead to passing out or the fact that my foot could go right through the floor. this is a major safety issue and nissan should be backing up their products as this is a common issue with the manufacturing of their metal. *tr

I have recently discovered the driver and passenger side floor boards are severely rusted through to the bottom of the carpet! this is a serious safety hazard with potential for injury from stepping through and possible death from exhaust fumes causing unconsciousness while driving. there is absolutely no rust anywhere else on the car?! to my knowledge there are numerous consumer complaints about this very problem with no record of a recall on file to correct the structural problem of the vehicle. *tr

Today while performing an oil change on my girlfriends 2005 nissan altima i noticed a large hole in the floor of the car. there is a large rusted out hole, only on one side of the vehicle that goes completely through to the inside. in exactly the same place on the opposite side of the car there is no rust at all. this car is washed regularly, and has no rust on the paintwork anywhere. upon looking it up on the internet there appears to be many many people with this issue, and nissan is trying to cover it up and not cover the replacement of parts that are clearly defective. please help me hold them accountable. *tr

My vehicle is a low mileage garaged 2005 nissan altima which is in perfect condition except that the driver and passenger side floor boards are rotted out so that you can step through. vehicle has been garaged and meticulously maintained with fresh water cleaning of the undercarriage when washed and especially in the spring. this is a serious safety hazard with potential for injury stepping through and possible death from exhaust fumes causing unconsciousness while driving. this is an obvious vehicle defect and should be recalled. i have read numerous incidents of this problem both on this nhtsb site and in owner forums so it is a well known problem that needs top be addressed. *tr

I had my 2005 nissan altima at my local mechanic to have some rattling underneath my car looked at. there was a loose heat shield that the mechanic fixed and he also notified me that there were large areas of rust along both floorboards. this vehicle has been meticulously maintained and washed in the winter. the last time the car was at there mechanic, there was no rust evident. unfortunately my car is no longer under warranty and i would like nissan to acknowledge that this is a manufacturing defect. *tr

Rusted floor pan on passengers side had a 12" hole. *js

Passenger side floor panel is rusting. car is only 7. yrs old. *tr

It was noticed during inspection that the passenger side floorboards were starting to peel away. this is a known problem with this vehicle. contacted nissan about correcting the problem and they did not want to take responsibility for their poor engineering and materials of the vehicle. they should make good on the problem but they said because they didn't have enough service history , the car was out of warranty, it had to many miles. all reasons that have nothing to do with poor materials and workmanship. i think nissan should take responsibility and correct the problem they should be investigated about the problem. this is not an isolated problem. *tr

I brought my car to be serviced at glick nissan, the diagnostic report said that the left and right sides of the floor under passenger and driver seats are rusted out. i brought my car for a second opinion from another mechanic and his report said the rust is severe and in 6 months my car will be worth nothing! upon further investigation, i find that thousands of other nissan customers are experiencing the same problem due to a defective product used by nissan. i filed a claim with nissan north america, they are claiming zero responsibility, labeling the issue as an "environmental concern" and will in no way assist with repairs. nissan should take responsibility for this issue. *tr

Noticed an object hanging from underside of passenger floor area. upon examination found floorpan area completely rusted through and hanging piece was part of rusted floor pan. *tr

My 2005 nissan altima 2.5s has 88,500 miles on it. it is in excellent condition, except for the floor pans under the vehicle (driver and passenger sides) that are rusting through. it is apparent that this is a known problem for these vehicles and nissan has not issued a recall. i need this fixed, as this is a safety concern for 2 reasons: structural integrity and fumes entering vehicle. i was informed by my local nissan dealer that the only proper repair is to completely replace the floor pan metal. the estimate for this was around $2500. i have a 2 year old son and a daughter on the way. i cannot afford a new vehicle at this time, and nissan needs to step up and fix this! *tr

The entire floor in front of the front seats is completely rusted through to the point that you can see the road underneath the car. ever since i purchased the vehicle the floor had holes in it (found right after i had already bought the vehicle). this is a hazard for the passengers, very common amongst nissan altimas and should be addressed by the manufacturer. this issue makes the car unsellable since it will never pass inspection unless a major repair is done to its body. it is unacceptable that a car would have structural issues like severe rust and nissan not do anything about it and the nhtsa not make nissan buy the affected vehicles back.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a trade-in and the contact was informed that the floor boards on the passenger side of the vehicle were rusted. the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was dangerous to drive and they would not take the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified and advised him to contact the dealers. the failure mileage was 89000.

After jacking up my mother's car for an oil change, while i was placing jack stands behind the front wheels in the appropriate jacking points, i noticed that the floor panels looked swollen underneath the rust proofing material. i began to poke at it with my finger, and my finger pushed through the rust proofing and all kinds of severely rusted metal began to fall out on the garage floor. the steel floor panel, had basically turned to rusted dust. i was able to push my finger up through the floor panel until i could feel the bottom of the carpet. noticing no other rust anywhere else near by, i figured it had to be a manufacturing defect, so i decided to check the driver's side same location, and sure enough, was able to push my finger through the rust proofing and through rotted steel like it was nothing. this is obviously a manufacturer defect as there is absolutely no rust anywhere else on the car. the car has very low mileage, and has been very well maintained, as well as garage kept. nissan needs to acknowledge this as a manufacturing defect, and a safety issue. *tr

While jacking my 2005 nissan altima up upon looking underneath i noticed a 4 inch by 4 inch patch of rust. after further inspection i noticed that it was rusted all the way through to the carpet inside the car. six months ago when i was working on my car there was not rust at all. i take care of my car and inspect the car for any problems. there are no recalls for this by nissan and this needs to be fixed. after researching i found this is a common problem with 02 - 05 altimas and is a serious safety issue. *tr

My car has had deteriorating floorboards since i purchased it. it is now to the point that they are completely rusted out and the only thing between my feet and the road is a bit of carpet and a piece of plastic. *tr

Noticed rust. took it to nissan. floorboard rusted out. they said it is not covered. repairs run between $3,000 to $4500. now eating through to passenger compartment. have to avoid areas of floor board to not put foot through. also, i have had to replace the clutch pedal 3 times. it breaks and is cited on numerous web discussions. air conditioner quit at 36,500 mi. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance when the mechanic advised the contact that there were rust spots under the driver and passenger seats, underneath the vehicle. in addition, the mechanic discovered rust over the entire front end of the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted and advised that they could provide no assistance because the warranty was expired. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 56,903.

Due to a known engineering flaw, water gets caught under the floor boards and rots/rusts out the flooring. my feet are about to fall through the floor of car. passenger side is worse. the dealer/nissan is well aware of the issue and still will not cover it. there should be a recall on this. there is a hole in each floorboard that was put there intentionally. since there is nothing structural to fill it water can get in when the undercoating develops cracks. once water gets in, it just lays under the asphalt insulation and between the sheet metal and rots from inside out. i had a warranty on it and the dealers i have taken it to, many times for many jobs and maintenance, etc. never once mentioned it. i just recently was made aware of it and nissan will not do anything to help. they are well aware of the issue and won't do anything about it unless made to.

A few years ago i was alerted by my mechanic that the passenger floor boards were rusting at an advanced rate. my mechanic said the rest of the car was in great shape and it was a shame the floor was failing prematurely. he recommended i take it to the nissan dealership to see if there was a service recall or a service bulletin. i stopped by the dealership on a saturday and the service writer looked at the floor of my car and said that he had never seen such a thing on any nissan. he said there was nothing he could do and recommended we contact nissan. we contact nissan and never even got a response. at the time we searched the internet and found numerous people reporting the issue. so i find it hard to believe that nissan had never heard of the issue. my mechanic has kept an eye on the rust when i am in for service and he has mentioned it is getting worst at a rapid rate and that it is becoming a safety issue. i feel like this design defect and nissan should be held responsible. *tr

Passenger side underbody rusted completely through. *js
