Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Nissan Altima

Multiple owners have complained about a rusting floorboard. this is a nissan defect. i learned today from the mechanic who did the cars oil change that i have the same problem on my nissan with both passenger and driver floorboards rusted and have hole in them. i have never seen this in a 10 year old modern car. just came from an oil change and the mechanic happened to see it. any help from you would be appreciated. the repair runs into the thousands with the car not even worth that much any more.

The driver and passenger floors are seriously rusted with holes. i found the condition when i noticed something hanging under the car. it was some sort of plastic material that lined the metal floor inside the car.

Cpsc: many complaints are on the web from owners of nissan altima regarding floor boards rusting away. my 2005 nissan altima has such a problem even though it is garage kept. i am afraid that i will fall through the rusted out floor boards or my seat will fall through while i or any other driver is driving the vehicle. i first noticed how flimsy the floor boards were made after a week of having the car. this is a dangerous situation that the manufacturer should recall this car to fix. please see the following web site: https://consumerist.com/2015/04/06/nhsta-complaints-show-rusted-floorboards-in-older-nissan-altimas-create-fred-flintstone-cars/ my friend spent over $1000.00 to have the floor boards repaired and i know more. updated 01/24/17 *bf

My 2005 nissian altima has been giving me issues with the shifter when attempting to switch gear from reverse to drive it takes several minutes just for the car to go into gear and when doing so jerks extremely hard...i have also had many issues with it not wanting to start and i will have to place vehicle in neutral then force back into park many times before my car will start...this vehicle has been well maintained and kept very clean...while having car inspected i was informed of the floor boards rotting out...i have tried to contact nissan and discuss these issues...i have had 000 results in being able to do so...this is very dangerous...if i would have known of these issues i would have never purchased this vehicle...and with the treatment from nissan...will never purchase any vehicle from them again

The floor boards under the passenger's feet are completely rusted out. this is a huge safety hazard and should be treated as such. from all the reports, it doesn't seem like nissan or nhtsa is taking this seriously. you can see the road thru the huge holes. when a vehicle that is only 10 years old and spent some of that time down south, away from any possibility of salt on the roads has rusted out floor boards, this is not 'normal' corrosion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact noticed a piece of metal hanging underneath the passenger side of the vehicle. the dealer stated that the floor on the passenger side was totally rusted and there was a hole under the carpet. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was 178,000.

Rusted floor panels on both sides up front

2005 nissan altima with 60,000 miles on it needed drivers side floor replaced, dealer tried to tell me this was from snow and salt. vehicle is located in philadelphia and not driven in this type of weather. nissan manufactures a replacement set of floor pans but does not recognize the defect. i had to buy the set so i have the passenger side for when that rust out. this was not a cheap fix and based on age, condition and mileage, this should never have happened.

Undercarriage rust i am seeing everyone with 2002-2005 nissan altima are having this issue. this getting out of control

Undercarriage (floor boards) on passenger & driver side rusted. holes with flooring carpet showing through.

My 2005 nissan altima has holes in the front driver's side and front passenger's side floorboard due to extreme rust.

From the auto body shop's diagnostic & estimate report: "rf interior foot space sunk in more" & "floor board rusted out on both front driver & passenger sides". in other words, the metal floor panels in front of both front seats have prematurely corroded to failure, in which the floor is no longer safely supports the occupants & the barrier between inside & outside the vehicle has been breached. upon investigation this problem is a common with vehicles of this make, model, & year. the metal floor panel & its corrosion resistance are the manufacturer's error & are a safety risk to the users. i am worried about the possibility of a foot or item falling through the floor, exhaust or other fumes entering the interior, & the car's performance in an accident.

Well maintained, garaged-kept altima had no visible body rust anywhere upon inspection last november. today i noticed rusty flakes on the floor of my garage, and upon looking underneath the car, found that one half of the driver's side floor pan was caving in. this rust is not noticeable to the consumer until the rust is all the way thru to the exterior, at which point the weight of the foot breaks it thru the undercoating. the passenger side floorpan was also caving in. when i took up the rubber mats, floormats, and carpet/pad, i saw large holes on both driver and passenger sides which only affected one half of each floorpan. these rusted halves have a type of hard "black shingle" stuck to the floor, and from what i observed also have a small 3"x3" silver paper completely covering what should have been a drain hole. the unrusted halves are painted, have no "shingles" and no rust whatsoever despite being butted right up to the rusted halves. these "shingles" appear to be the problem, the rusted metal was firmly attached to them. this must be a design defect or someone at nissan did not do thier job right (since the drain holes were covered up with silver paper). this rust obviously started invisibly from inside the car. i was able to easily push the rusted metal thru - i am glad i was able to discover this before someone could put thier foot thru the floor of a moving vehicle or fall asleep at the wheel due to fumes. this was fixed at at cost of $900 to me, because i have children and this is a hazard. we also have a 2000 chevy, and a 2005 dodge, and neither have such rust on/in the floorpans, despite being parked outside and driven in the same elements. i would like to be reimbursed for the altima's floorpan repair as the amount of rusting is not normal for the care taken, and also is not noticeable nor preventable by the consumer.

I took my altima to the nissan dealership for regular maintenance and the mechanic noticed the common rusting problem in my front passenger side floor board. there is a hole about 3-4 inches and you can look up and see the carpet. i'm really upset and wasn't aware of this issue with altimas when i bought my car preowned six months ago. it is in otherwise excellent condition, completely pampered by the previous owner and myself, and shouldn't be rusting through at this age and with only 59k miles on it. despite what nissan might be claiming, having large holes in your floorboard is an absolute safety hazard and i really feel concerned for the altima owners who didn't catch the problem as early as i have, or even have yet to discover it! some of the holes that other people have experienced can fit more than a foot through!! i am also very concerned about the fumes creeping in. now that i am informed of the design flaw, i can 100% count on my drivers side to begin rusting out too. this is really expensive to repair and i shouldn't be repaired it as it is no fault of any of us drivers, nor the rain nor the salt. it is a safety design flaw and nissan should recall. thank you nhtsa for listening! *tr

As the original owner of this altima, we were alarmed when our son said he could see the carpeting hanging through the bottom of the vehicle. we contacted our nissan dealer who said the repairs wouldn't be covered and to pursue it with nissan corporate. we paid out of pocket for the repairs (safety concerns) and formally requested reimbursement. i received a call and was told it was declined due to vehicle's age and due to the fact we're in the "north-east salt states". i asked why 2005 honda's, chevy's and buick's from the same locale aren't experiencing the same issue?? when i asked for a detailed denial of my claim (one citing the reasons i was being given verbally) i was told absolutely not and that nissan would only supply a "general" letter of denial. seriously?? does anyone else think this sounds like an unethical practice? all of these similar stories and yet nissan hasn't been called onto the carpet?

Undercarriage of driver side is severely rusted. hole in driver's seat floor.

Floor pan almost completely rusted out. vehicle was inspected today and reported severe rust, to the point that feet may be able to go through the floor soon.

This is a 2005 altima well maintained throughout all these years. i found a 10"x10" hole in passenger side floor pan. it was rusted very badly inside out. it must have been developing the rust for quite a few years. it is a safety hazard and there should be a recall as so many nissan owners are having the same issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the driver's side floor board was rusted. in addition, there was a hole in the floor board. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the floor board needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,998. the vin was not available.

While i was parked at home i was examining the underside of my 2005 altima and to my shock found a 12 inch by 10 inch section of rust with large flakes coming from the floor panel on my passenger side. there are holes in this section that are penetrating through the layers towards the inside of the car. the drivers side has the beginning of rust and cracking floor panel as well. i am cannot believe this, i am the second owner and have meticulously maintained the car just as the first owner had and there is no rust anywhere else on the body. i researched this rusted out floor paneling and found that there are news stories and that it is a nationwide problem that nissan needs to address! i do not feel safe structurally with the rust compromising strength and safety and i do not want to have any passengers ride in that seat. clearly there is a major issue that has been going on for some time to reach this extent! i believe this is a design flaw because of the rusting out of the floor panels from the inside out! i had the rusted out floor panels examined by a local body shop and they quoted me $2500+ that is outrageous and leaves me to deal with a problem that is not my fault, but failure of the materials.

The driver and passenger side floor boards have rusted/ rotted out. it is only visible from underneath the car. it was discovered by my mechanic when the car was on a lift.

Noticed a large piece of something hanging from undercarriage. took to body shop who stated both driver's and passenger's sides are severely rusted with multiple holes up to 6 inches totally through to carpet and interior. considered a safety risk due to exposure of fumes/gases from engine/exhaust as well as the risk of "falling through". rest of car looks good no visible rust on frame or rear. no history of collisions or impact damage. we are not in an area of great road salt need nor near an ocean. estimate to repair over $1000. advised not safe to drive or sell as is. noticed in complaints, this has been an issue since at least 2010. why has a recall not been issued?

Part of the floor pan under the passenger side foot area fell off the car and onto my driveway. i now have a hole in my floorboard and can touch the rug.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that the floor pan on the front passenger side was prematurely rusted and corroded. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

I noticed rust flakes on the ground under the front of the car. there is a large rust hole (about 6"x6") in the front passenger side floorboard. the front driver side has a slightly smaller hole. the body shop estimate is $1425 to repair - they have seen other altimas with this problem. called 1-800-nissan1 to register a complaint and was told "there is nothing nissan can do at this time". i purchased the car new in june 2005.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. when the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a state inspection, it was determined that there was severe corrosion underneath the driver side floorboard. in addition, there were large holes. the contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000. the vin was not available. ma 10/22/2015

The front seat floor rusted out.

The nissan dealership, kelly nissan of stoneham ma, informed me that there was a hole in the floor board due to rust. the rust seems localized to an area about 1 foot x 1 foot on both the driver and passenger side floor boards. i believe this is a hazardous situation for driver and passenger. i believe this rusting is due to a manufacturing defect because of the localized nature of the rust.

Noticed metal hanging off bottom of car on the passenger side while it was parked in a parking lot. got home and discovered that the coating underneath the car is peeling off and that the floor board is rusting through. at 10 years old, this should not be happening. i have a 16 year old car and it is fine. this car was recalled and treated not long after i bought it because i live in a salt state. this is a safety issue as a passenger could fall through the bottom of the car. i will be contacting nissan on monday but i doubt they will do anything about it. (altima 3.5 sl-v6)

As you well know by now, the numerous documented issues with 2002-2006 nissan altima has alas reached my nissan altima. floorboard is rusting intensely but i am not do rich so can't afford the thousands of dollars that every mechanic (i paid to inspect by the way) is quoting me. nothing much to add to this description because no one is going to do anything about this anyway. issue has been on local newscasts so my insignificant contribution of filing complaint is strictly to join the cause in mind and spirit. by no means trying to sound insensitive instead truthful; it's clear someone will have to die before things change, just hope isn't is me.

The floorboards on my 2005 nissan altima are corroding and rusting out. you can touch the floor carper from the bottom! this is happening on both sides of the car the driver and passenger side. this is supposedly a known issue with this car make/model and this has happened to a lot of people. i am not sure but the repair costs are very expensive for this type of work.

On a recent scheduled maintenance visit to the nissan dealership, i was informed that my 2005 nissan altima had a hole in the floor pan. my altima is in otherwise excellent condition with less than 42,000 miles. i was told this has been an ongoing issue with this year and model nissan, and it could cost thousands of dollars to fix it. it was also explained that nissan has a plate that could be ordered for $700, which would correct the problem. you can buy a new altima front floor pan from a company on the internet for $79.95. why is nissan gouging the consumer by charging $700. shame on you nissan for adding insult to injury. nissan should be responsible for this repair. this should certainly warrant a recall by nissan due to a manufacturing defect, thus causing a safety issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that while in park, the contact noticed that there were holes in the floor board of the vehicle underneath the driver and passenger side area. the contact mentioned that the failure was due to corrosion. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000.

When i was working on the brakes on my 2005 nissan altima, i placed my floor jack underneath the car i realized the drivers side floor board is starting to rust through to the inside of the car. when i went to passenger side the floor board was starting to do the same thing. both sides are starting to rot all the way through to the inside of the car. i find this unbelievable that a car that is so well kept could have this problem. this is something nissan needs to recognize as a design flaw. i have had other vehicles that never had floor boards rust away so prematurely. if nissan does not recognize this as a design flaw this will be my last nissan bought from the car company. i have been very loyal to the brand. i can't even imagine what the repair cost would be.

Noticed that the floor pan on passenger side has a big rust hole. drivers side floor pan is starting to show the rust coming thru also. ....updated 11/13/15 *bf updated 1/4/2016*js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. while having routine maintenance performed on the vehicle, the technician noticed that the passenger side floormat was visible from underneath the vehicle. the contact was informed that the lower structure of the vehicle had severe corrosion. the vehicle was not taken to be inspected nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan altima. the contact stated that while the vehicle was being inspected, the inspector observed that the front driver's and passenger side floor board were rotted and rusted through. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was confirmed that the front driver's and passenger side floor boards were severely rusted and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 113,000. the vin was unavailable.

I brought my car to firestone to have numerous repairs done on my car 6/27/15-6/30/15. while they had the car up on the lift, the tech noticed and told me that my floor boards are rusting out and he could see clear through to my carpeting. my windows have been repeatedly getting dirty from the inside and i could never figure out why. i have asthma and i am very concerned about the fumes that are entering my vehicle. this now explains why i feel the need to use my inhaler more frequently when i'm in my car or getting out of my car on shorter trips. for instance, i have a 1.5 mile ride to the train for my commute to work. by the time i get to the train, i'll need to use my inhaler again already. my car is paid off. i had planned to keep this car as long as i possibly could so i can pay down debt. also, i had just this past weekend spent around $700 in repairs on my car. i've taken very good care of my car (i.e., regular oil changes, tire rotation, etc.). i just want nissan to fix the problem so i can keep my car. other than this issue, i love my car. i've had very few minor problems with it over the years and i'm overall very happy with it, except for this issue. i hope you can get them to help everyone similarly situated...updated 09/03/15 *bf updated 11/06/2017*cn

Driver side floorboard is rusted out

This past week i had my car to the dealer for an oil change and battery. then i took my car in for brakes. when i happened to look at the bottom of my car, i found that the floor on both the driver and passenger sides was rotting out. the dealer is always looking for problems when you take it in, but nobody mentioned the rust problem. now i have the unexpected expense of repairing the floor. after doing research, i found out that nissan has known of the problem for a long time now, but refuses to reimbursement or do a recall. it may not be a safety hazard, unless your foot goes through the floor, but something is not right.

Just found out my car's floor boards are rusted through. i did some research and saw this is a common problem with altima's from 2002-2006. it was not caught by my oil change people, and only came up today as i was getting it approved for a sale. this repair totals the car, which obviously put a financial hardship on me.

Passenger floor board rotted out from rust in a well maintained car. no other signs of damaging rust are present.

Floor board drivers side is rusting out.

The floor of my 2005 nissan altima has rusted out on both sides, this shoulld be a recall because i have read that other customers have the same problem

Rusted floor panel in the front part of the car going all the way through so there is a hole. driver and passenger side both affected.

After performing an oil change i noticed the bottom of the floor pans were rusted on both the driver and passenger side. upon further investigation there is a hole through the floor pan into the interior of the car. i asked nissan to fix it outside of warranty due to this being a common issue among several other nissan altimas between 2002 - 2007. nissan of america said they would not pay to fix it. i am hoping you (nhtsa) can help in this matter.

Vehicle has extensive rust under floorboards under driver's seat. i read about other altimas from this year having this problem and found the damage to my car by taking pictures with my cell phone under the car. the car was inspected at a nissan dealer service center about six months ago for an unrelated issue, but i believe the car would have been up on a lift, and the nissan service people did not advise me there was rust on the underside.

I am the original owner of this vehicle. i found out on line , that there is an inferior design flaw which is extremely dangerous, that involves water accumulation and severe rusting clear thru both the inner and lower floor boards, on most 2002 to 2006 nissan's. i checked my vehicle and found on the front passenger side,i have a 6 to 8 inch hole clear thru both the inner and lower floor boards. this condition is extremely hazardous in that in addition to someone possibly falling thru the hole , engine exhaust carbon monoxide fumes as well as water can enter the vehicle. there is also the possibility of an electrical short in the wiring that can cause a fire and result in death. in reading about this defect on line it stats that repairing this problem can cost thousands of dollars and nissan knew of this rust problem , poor water drainage condition and will not issue a recall since this condition happened after the warranty period. the inter net articles stated that hundreds of complaints have already been filed and advised persons affected by this problem to contact the national highway traffic safety administration . i thank you and appreciate your prompt attention,in looking into this matter and await your response. *tr

I am placing a complaint against nissan motor company for faulty flooring in their altima models. i tried to have our car a 2005 nissan altima inspected today but it failed do to rusting floors under the front passenger and driver feet section. this is a well known issue now that nbc news has broke the story about this problem in one of the broad cast. nissan should not be let off the hook with this issue so i'm writing to you in hopes that will not happen . this company screwed up now people such as my family are left wondering how to pay for something that is no fault of their own. please do something !!!
