I have a 2003 nissan altima. this car is burning oil like crazy. there's no smoke or anything of that sort, but i have to keep an eye out and put oil in my car to keep it running at least every 4-5 days or so. gas is high and oil is getting higher; i have to keep at least 2-3 quarts in my trunk. the check engine light has been on for sometime now. while driving on the interstate if i go over 70mph the check engine light starts blinking. when i take my foot off the accelerator the check engine light stops blinking, but continues to stay on. however, i just had my spark plugs changed and now the car won't start. please i need some help asap.... i don't have money to purchase a new one at this time, but wish someone can tell me what is going on. the dealer is no help whatsoever. they get you in there and tell you that this, this, and this is the problem. it seems that nothing is under warranty with nissan, and i don't own the car as of yet i'm still making monthly payments. i think that nissan needs to go over the engine, electronic, and etc. because canton, mississippi is the home of nissan and you have some big problems on your hands!!! *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) as stated in my last complaint with odi id number: 10327349, i have a 2003 nissan altima. the car is now in the repair shop the engine blown.... the car was burning excessive amounts of oil. however, i also stated that the check engine light was on, and would stay on. although, while driving on the interstate an reaching the speed of 70mph the check engine light would begin to start blinking. i don't have $3,000.00 - $4,000.00 to have this repaired. i'm still making monthly payments. i don't know if there was a recall on my vehicle engine with vin: [xxx] . furthermore, i need to know if this can be fixed/ repaired immediately by the nissan in canton, ms. the mileage presently on the vehicle is 155,100. i didn't purchase the car new, but used. i truly don't know what to do at this point. i've keep the car maintained, and then this happens. please someone from odi contact me regarding this matter immediately. *tr

I was driving my vehicle, 2003 nissan altima, at a low speed, when for no apparent reason, the vehicle died. it was during the evening hours. i was lucky the driver behind me didn't run into me. i was able to restart the car, and drive off. the car didn't do it again, but a week later, the check engine light came on. i took the car into the dealership. they told me the cause of the problem was a crank angle sensor. it was faulty and that's why my car died, without any warning. i found out that, nissan had a recall on this item. i called nissan north america inc and spoke to a person name david. david confirmed that they did have a recall on the sensor but it was only on certain years for the altima. i told david that maybe all the altima's with this sensor should be recalled and replaced. further investigation, i found a owner notification from nissan telling me that my altima, there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and ecm. i took it to the dealer after receiving their notice. the dealer reprogram the ecm unit, but never replaced the sensor. i told david at nissan that they should have replaced the sensor at the time when they reprogram the ecm. it was very scary when my car just died suddenly. i was very lucky i didn't get hurt. i am letting you know because i feel nissan should recall all their vehicle equip with this sensor. i was very very lucky not to have been involved in an accident. i told david at nissan that i don't feel safe driving my car anymore. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan altima 2.5 sl, in approximately 2008 february, my car stopped on me while driving on the freeway. it turns out that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. had the work done at buena park nissan then i realized that the car had also starting burning excessive oil. i was told there was an oil pan leak, had that work done at another dealership. approximately 9 months later, the car stopped again, had the car diagnosed at the nissan dealer ship in antioch, ca, was advised that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, again. at this point, i was frustrated with the car and i contacted nissan of north american, and the dealership in buena park who both denied me any help. i was given a reference number of 6594593 when i called for a solution in 2009. now, 8/2010, i am having acceleration issues again, my check engine light is on, my antifreeze is evaporation along with the engine oil every 300 miles. i called nissan north america again today and spoke with lisa byrne at extension 41661 who told me there was nothing nissan would do at this point because my previous claim had already been denied. i am replacing oil on a weekly basis as well as the antifreeze. i called nissan again today, ref # [xxx]. i asked her who could i contact other than the regional office and she stated no one and that there was nothing nissan was going to do to right my situation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

In october of 2006, i had a problem the craft shaft position sensor on my 2003 nissan altima 2.5 s. the dealership replaced the sensor at no cost. it is august 2008, and once again this code is coming up. i was just informed that there is a recall on this part for all 2002 and 2003 nissan altimas. *tr

In august 2007, my 2003 nissan altima began to hesitate while driving. the check engine light came on. the light remained on for a few days and the car continued to hesitate while driving. it stalled at a traffic light in the middle of washington, d.c., so i took it to the shop once i got it started. on aug. 7, 2007, the dealer replaced the crank position sensor. on may 29, 2008, my car needed new brakes. a 100-point inspection was performed, and no other problems were found. about a week later, the check engine light came on. but dealer said it would likely go off and it wasn't a problem. a couple of weeks later, the car began to hesitate while driving (jumping, etc.) on july 23, the car again stalled while at a stop light at rush hour in washington, d.c. after several tries, the car restarted. on july 24, 2008, the dealer again said that the crank position sensor that needed to be replaced. i asked about recall number 06v242000, but dealer said that did not apply to crank, only ecm. now have spent $600 to have same problem fixed in 10 months. *tr

A/c was working weird in the beginning on how it turned on etc. when i took the vehicle in the first time under warranty, i was told it was normal and no issues were found. now, a/c doesn't work at all. *tr

2003 nissan altima with recall for a sensor. consumer states that she would like reimbursement because she did not take it to an authorized dealer for the repair. *kb the consumer stated the engine light illuminated and the engine seized. the consumer also stated the air condition didn't work. the rack and pinion steering bolt was found to be loose after a recall was performed. *jb

The engine light periodically flashed on/off. we had the car serviced at a nissan dealer which cost $1000. 3 months later,we spent $300. finally,2 months later the motor goes out and we spend $5000 to replace it in a car less than 4yrs old(bought brand new -not a used vehicle). furthermore, the car would just slow down and stop periodically(no matter if you were on the interstate or not). *tr

Nissan altima 2003 - vent blows hot air over 100 degrees when temperature outside is comfortable (80's) . manufacturer checked car & claims everything within specs. - their solution is to always use ac. have brought car several times since purchase new & they will not resolve. my concern is are there future problems to the car connected to this & of course the uncomfortable of the heat. *nm

We purchased a 2003 nissan altima 3.5 on 12/2002. on 7/16/04 the car wouldn't crank until the third try. after starting he wouldn't go but 15 mph. took to dealer and their diagnosis was the throttle chamber was defective. it has been two weeks now and the part has not come in because their telling me its on back order. called and talked to several service guys and requested a loaner car until my car got fixed. we don't do that anymore replied all the guys. so i called the gm manager and left a message, he called back and said he would check on a loaner and call me back in the am of 7/30/04 by 9am. he took to long so i called him at 934am went to voice mail.*ak

Engine noise (knock, clack or clatter) at idle. nissan america has published several bulletins/recalls/alerts regarding noise associated with the auto-tensioner, pre-catalyst and/or valves but the manufacturer and dealer now claim the "noise" is normal. also, the car still has a rattle in dome light that the insulation kit (tape) failed to fix. service manager stated rattle was not heard while driving the car for 10 miles but if the rattle could be duplicated at 40,000 miles he would repair. of course, i heard the knock and rattle while driving home from the dealership. unfortunately, the car only has 12,500 miles. the radiator was also replaced which is when i began noticing the knock. this is a sour deal! *veb. *nm

A/c compressor does not disengage when the manual selector switch is moved from the defrost position. this is covered by a service bulletin ntb03-048 dated 5-6-03 from nissan concerning this problem. this is noted as a change in operation from earlier models and i feel it is dangerous. the only way to disengage the compressor after using the defroster is to stop the car, move the selector switch to any function that is not defroster related, turn off the ignition and restart the car. if you don't there is at least a 10% loss in mileage due to the fact that the a/c compressor is operating and the temp selector must be adjusted up or the occupants of the vehicle will freeze. this was discovered by my wife and i on our way through chicago on i-94. i thought it was a simple warranty problem that i would be able to get fixed upon my return to waukesha. the service bulletin makes it seem that this is normal and the consumer will just have to live with the problem. now that i know what is going on i feel this is not only dangerous and environmentally unfriendly but just another way the car manufacturer has decided to cut corners and not make two different relays for the manual and automatic climate control vehicles. i do not feel that i should have to carry blankets around in my car to keep me warm in june and july because my a/c will not shut off unless i restart my engine. what fool would do that on a busy interstate highway. this is not a dealer problem, this was in the vehicle when i bought it and that the way nissan designed it. i understand that the vehicles with automatic climate control can hit the "auto" control and the problem stops. i don't have that button in my "manually" controlled heater/air conditioner. i hope that you will address this with nissan. according to the service bulletin this problem started with most of the 2003 models. thanks for your time. *nlm
