Tl*the contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport. shortly after purchasing the vehicle in may of 2004, the brakes began failing. while driving approximately 55 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle began sliding. after this incident, the vehicle began making noises continuously. while driving approximately 15 mph around a curve, the vehicle began to tail spin when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken to the mitsubishi dealer and they stated that the failure was due to the brake accumulator, which affected the abs. the contact was also informed that the noise was due to the vacuum hose being defective. the brakes have not been repaired at this time. nhtsa campaign id number 01v027000 (service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) was referenced. the current mileage was 107,000 and failure mileage was 40,000. updated 10/03/08 *bf the consumer stated she had an accident in the vehicle, because another vehicle made a sudden stop and when she applied the brakes, the vehicle mad a noise. updated 10/07/08. *jb
I have a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport ls 2wd, which i purchased new and approximately 14 month after i purchased with only 7000 mile's at the time, i started hearing some wired noise every time i hit the brake, and the whole vehicle vibrates at the same time, mainly when getting off the freeway, and i want to reduce speed from highway to city speed, at first i though it was the abs, so that was why i never paid attention to it, but as i kept driving it, the noise and vibration was getting worse, so , i took it to the dealer,on august 16 03, when the vehicle had 17283 mile's, and they inspected the brakes, and they found that the brake pads were worn out, so they (dealer) told me, that, new pads would fix the problem, i just replaced the brake pads, and i still have the same problem, i like to mention, that, with experiences that i have with other cars that i have had in the past, i have never needed to replace brake pads at 18000 miles, brake pads on all my vehicles last 50000 to 60000 mile's, therefore i think that the reason why these brake pads got worn out to fast, was the noise and vibration that is coming from the front wheels every time i apply the brake, this is a safety related problem, i'm afraid to drive it, mainly on the mountains, hills etc. this noise and vibration has nothing to do with brake pads or rotors, this is something else that the manufacturer has to look at. *jb
The rotors and braking system on the 2001 montero sport are undersized for the weight of the vehicle. at 4217 miies, the rear rotors had to be turned. they warp badly, making it very hard to contol when breaking. now at 37k they need turning again, if possible, or replacement.
My husband and i purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport 3.5xs june of 2001. it now has 37,000 miles on it and during those 37,000 miles i have had to have the rotors turned twice and have the brakes pads replaced three time since june of 2001. i am not a hard driver nor do i drive recklessly. in my opinion, this is not acceptable for a brand new car. i also know someone who owns a 2001 montero sport es who has also had the same problems. wondering if there was anything that can be done. or if this is normal for a mitsubishi product because if it is, i will never purchase another. thank you for your help. *jb
