Keys come out of the ignition when my mazda tribute is not in park. i forgot today that the front rotors are real bad and need replaced and i only have 41140 miles on my 2001 tribute which i bought brand new from the mazda dealer in town. i have to replace the front door handle twice now since it would not open from the inside. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. the contact stated the vehicle was parked and shut off for a few hours when it engulfed into flames. the fire department extinguished the fire. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a junk yard. the vehicle was not examined for the cause of failure. the failure mileage was 55,000. the vin was unavailable.

I own a 2001 mazda tribute, which i purchased used in 2007. the vehicle went through six master cylinders within the first few months we owned it. it has been an ok car, but frequently and i mean frequently visits the mechanic to get fixed, whereas my other (foreign-made) vehicle rarely has problems - i will never buy american again! wednesday evening i picked up my 2001 tribute up at the mechanic from getting four new engine coils which had just been replaced two years previously, which my mechanic says should not have gone bad. thursday morning i had my two children in the car when i reversed out of my parking spot at a local church when the brake pedal went straight to the floor! the car kept going back and i had to use the emergency break to stop!!!! luckily i did not hit anything and no one was hurt. i had the truck towed back to the mechanic, which i had just picked it up from (this was the car's 4th visit in two weeks for broken parts). the mechanic said that the front left brake line had ruptured and the right one was cracked, so both were replaced. i am so thankful the brakes hadn't failed minutes later when my family would have been on the interstate!!! no recall has been made by mazda for this problem, but i have seen many similar stories from this vehicle. it is a disgrace and threat to not only the driver and passengers of these vehicles, but to everyone on the road!!! i'm scared to drive my car, not knowing if it will get me home safely or even go. i would never have purchased the car if i could go back and only wish i could purchase something different now. *tr

Tl-the driver owns a 2001 mazda tribute. the vehicle was parked and shut off when the driver was notified that their garage was on fire. the fire department appeared on the scene and the driver was informed the vehicle was on fire. the fire department extinguished the fire and informed the driver that the fire began inside of the engine compartment. the vehicle was destroyed and was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 94,000. sm.

Car was parked in parking lot of my job at 6:30 am. car was not driven all day. at approximately 2:00pm, smoke was noticed coming out of hood and flaming particles were dropping from engine compartment to ground. fire developed within hood compartment and spread to the cabin. car continued to burn until fire department extinguished. *tr

My 2001 mazda tribute will stall in the middle of traffic. i lose the ability to control the vehicle when this happens. in december 2007, my idle air control valve failed. i had it replaced by a mazda dealership service department. in september 2008, the idle air control valve failed again, along with the upper intake gasket. i had this replaced again by a mazda technician. on october 10, 2008, my vehicle stalled again due to the idle air control valve. i lost control of my vehicle and ended up in a ditch. i had the vehicle repaired again by a mazda technician, replacing the idle air control valve and the lower intake gasket. on october 16, my vehicle stalled again in traffic, i was very nearly rear-ended. mazda technicians keep instructing me to replace various parts of my car. however, the fact remains that they are unable to repair this vehicle sufficiently to prevent its failing again, leaving me extremely vulnerable to a potentially catastrophic vehicular accident. my vehicle is too dangerous to continue operating because of the shoddy and inept craftsmanship rendered by mazda. i am not alone in my complaints. the internet is filled with complaints relating to stalling problems of mazda sedans and suvs. swift and decisive action should be made against mazda usa by the nhtsa to prevent the continued presence of dangerous mazda vehicles on the road. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 mazda tribute. the contact heard a loud noise coming from the engine compartment when she turned on the ignition. the passenger compartment became filled with smoke. the contact exited the vehicle. when the smoke finally cleared, the contact raised the hood and discovered extensive damage. they vehicle was towed to a shop, and after two days of inspecting the damage, they believed that two of the injectors were leaking fuel and caused the engine to explode. mazda stated that due to the age of the vehicle and the fact that it was no longer under warranty, nothing could be done. the current and failure mileages were 82,000. updated 05/20/08. *lj

2001 mazda tribute lx v-6 engine. last year (2006) in the colder temps, mostly fall and winter, the engine runs so rough when you start it as if it has a terrible cold. letting it warm up, i have come outdoors to my car that it is no longer running due to stalling out. as the year progressed, i noticed that it no longer a cold temp issue...now i notice in the summer months that it doesn't like to stay running at stop lights or parked. yes it has stalled at stop lights waiting and praying the light turns green faster. it seems hesitant to take off after displaying such effort to stay running at stop lights. help...how much is this going to cost me. *jb

Mazda tribute 2001. while stopped in drive (automatic transmission; cruise control off) with foot on brake, engine suddenly revved to 4000 rpm. had to use hard, full braking plus emergency brake to keep suv from moving forward and hitting car in front of me. in neutral, engine revved at 4000 rpm. turned engine off and restated -- situation has not repeated yet. *nm

While driving on the mass. turnpike on 04/23/06, my vehicle was suddenly engulfed in thick gray smoke. it was determined by my insurance agency that it was a "mechanical failure', which resulted in my vehicle needing a new engine. i was unable to pay for a new engine, and was refused any assistance from mazda usa and dealer vehicle was purchased from. vehicle has 45,000 miles on it. *nm

Car engine dies when slowing down or stopping at least once a year for last three years. don't remember what they did the first time, second time they replaced the p.c.v and ventilation hose, third time the sensor,en. when i picked up the car the engine still died 6 times when i drove 10 miles home. came close to crashing during a turn. back in the shop as i write. *nm

On 11/07/05 vehicle was brought in due to stalling when slowing and stopping. the engine sensor was replaced. on 11/08/05 vehicle was bought back still stalling. ac gasket and idle valve were replaced. we were told our engine was damaged and dealer would not fix. the day i picked up the vehicle it stalled at 60 mph. three days later it would not start. brought vehicle to local mechanic, fuel pump had to be replaced. the vehicle is undrivable. this is the second time i have filed a complaint about this vehicle. *jb

The driver side door handle failed, i was trapped inside the car on the driver side. i had to lower the power window, reach outside of the car and open the door. i purchased a handle and paid to have the door handle replaced on 6/29/2005. the passenger side door handle failed , leaving the passenger trapped inside the car on the passenger side. passengers had to lower the power window, reach outside the car and open the door. i purchased a handle and paid to have the door handle replaced on 3/13/2006. recently, every time i crank my car a large cloud of gray smoke comes from the tailpipe. today, 6/16/2006, i went to put the key into the ignition and the key would not go in. after several attempts the key went into the ignition but, the key would not turn. i was unable to start the car. with assistance from a local mechanic, after numerous attempts, the key went in, turned and the car started. it was suggested to me, do not make any stops on the way home that would require turning the car off. once i arrived at home i turned the car off and attempted to start the car again. the key will go in but, after several attempts, the key will not turn to start the car. with the mazda being my only vehicle i feel this is a safety issue for my son and i. while driving the mazda the rear glass on the hatch opened. i pulled over to close the glass and it would not close and latch. with the help of a local mechanic he was able to close and engage the latch on the glass door. we avoid opening the rear glass but on accident the glass door was opened and it was the same scenario. *nm

Vehicle stalls without notice. on 3-2-04 i took the car to be fixed but the very next day it stalled again. when i called to let the wantagh service dealer know about what happened, they were very nasty and acted as if i were complaining for nothing. they made me feel like it was my problem, i don't know if this is because the car is still under warranty and they are not able to charge for their service. yet, i purchased the extended warranty for 2 extra years, which entitles me to this service. *jb

2001 mazda tribute v6 4wd (mfg date 06/01). while driving approx. 35 mph, vehicle lost power from an apparent engine stall. several dash board lights illuminated with the event occurance, power steering function was lost. vehicle speed was quickly reducing. vehicle was pulled into a nearby parking lot. after waiting approx. a minute, engine was restarted as normal. driving seemed normal for the 2 miles of the trip completion.*ak

I have been informed that my 2001 mazda tribute has a various engine parts that are not working properly, casusing it to stall when accelerating. this happened to me on the entrance ramp to the freeway, and i was very nearly rear-ended by a vehicle going between 50-65 mph. i must say, it was one of the scariest events of my life, and i am not at all pleased with the fact that this happened in a car that's barely 3 years old!*ak

I have a 2001 mazda tribute. recently i started having trouble starting the vehicle. it started but immediately stopped. i had to leave my foot on the gas for awhile before it would respond normally. this problem was completely random, not occurring everyday. the condition increased in frequency and finally my car started to die while i was driving it (if i released the gas for a turn, it would occasionally die). this almost caused a serious accident as i had no steering or braking when the car died. i returned the car to the dealership but they said there were no recall notices. their diagnostic equipment could find no problems, but the manager said this was happening to several early tributes and i should replace the idle air valve. replacing this has fixed the problem but this is a serious defect that needs to be fixed before someone is killed.

I have had constant problems with my mazda. in 2003 i had to get new sway bar links. this suv is treated well and should not of had such a problem so early. than in 2005 had to have two coil packs replaced. 2006 had to have to more coil packs replaced ,thanks goodness i only have 6 coil packs.now the last three years i have had problems with my catalytic converters ( not sure if that is spelled right) but i had a new one put in because my suv would not run at all little did they inform me that my suv has four so now i am having the same problem because of another one going bad. *tr

My 2001 tribute has stalled twice in the last yar. it seems to be related to hills. this life threatening situation could result in a crash because power steering fails, and there is no engine power. mazda must recall for this issue before someone is hurt. *ak

The madza tribute 2001 stalls without warning, at varying speeds. both the brakes and the steering system are inoperable. the car starts again after this occurs. this has happened 5 times! luckily, my son who drives this car hasn't been injured. but what about the next time? what if he is driving on the expressway at 55 or 65 miles an hour? can mazda assure me that he won't be seriously injured or killed? the service department has offered several explanations after verifying that this is a on going problem with this vehicle. we have been told that the air intake valve sticks when carbon builds up on it. now we are told it is a flaw in the computer. clearly there is a serious design flaw which the service departments have been unable to repair. this car is a disaster waiting to happen! how can i possibly allow my son to drive this vehicle?!! *la

Vehicle stalled twice, once while waiting for a red light the other time while driving. the first time this occurred the dealer replaced a sensor, the second time it occurred they said they were not able to determine the problem and were not able to duplicate. i'm very concerned about this problem
