Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2004 Land Rover Range Rover

Driving 75mph on interstate, while passing semi trailer, suddenly a loud thump and loss of drive to wheels, lost of power and sudden lost up hill i lost control of vehicle. semi avoided me, and i was barely able to control body roll but safely brought vehicle to stop of the side of road. towed to my mechanic, he reported that differential along with prop shaft had failed. he believed this was a recall issue. dealer in santa fe, nm says no active recall. i have read otherwise and that the issue can occur even after initial recall work done.

Bought this vehicle for wife brand new for $80,000. first 38,000 miles best car ever owned. then the landslide began. first bad vibration front end we pay $1,300 for wheel bearings. the transmission cooler rusted out. our fault salty roads $1,100.00 next the radiator goes $1,800 on us. by now 72,000 miles on it. keep in mind my wife only uses to goto grocery store and pick kids up from school. god forbid we ever took it off road or thru the plains of africa. now the biggy starts engine surging for no reason, vibration in steering wheel. yes tires are new and balanced. then the notorious transmission failsafe. limpmode. safety mode. how about sucker mode. take it to dealer and they say need new transmission. i freak and second mechanic there looks at it and said its the transfer case motor $3,100. oh yea that would be on us as well. so i say i'll tell you what put it in writing, that for sure this is the problem and if fixed all my transmission problems go away and if they don't its on you guys until its fixed. yes you know what they said. i mean what happened to honesty and integrity. love your neighbor as yourself. stand by your work. look i knew going into this car it was high maintenance but it does not even have 100,000 miles on it. never fixed. somedays it acts up all day other times once or twice it limps very sporadic. pretty much a weatherby car. whether or not it will act up or not. ashamed to sell it and give someone else the problems. tried telling people about problems and they said they would give me $7,000 carmax would not touch it actually refused to appraises it even though it was the cleanest they have seen. issue the auction had a lemon flag on all the rangerovers with 70,000 miles or more. nice! *tr

We have a 2004 land rover range rover and going home one night it kept down shifting during rush hour causing the engine to rev up so we figured it was some sort of limp home mode. the next morning it started fine, we backed out of the driveway and when we shifted to drive a transmission failsafe came on and we could not even move forward. we had to back own the street to park and then call a tow truck. when it got to the dealership the transmission had to be completely replaced. i asked the dealership if there was a recall and was told no. i went online and found there was one that would cause loss of drive if it wasn't fixed. i then called land rover and even though they were trying to be helpful, informing there was a recall and that our vehicle had already been repaired, they were completely unable to help me out at all. i think when you buy a vehicle like this the transmission should not go out at 56,000 miles. instead i have a $6,000 repair bill. *tr

It started about 2 months ago after i brought my car in for a recall issue i received in the mail regarding the differentials and front drive shaft. i figure it was a good idea to have it fixed as a preventable measure. shortly after (about 2 weeks) i started noticing "trans prog error" appear on my dashboard display but it would disappear and reappear and figure if the light does not stay on it should not be an issue. than my car one day while driving on the fast lane of the highway just lost power and displayed to put car in neutral. i had to get the car towed to a repair shop. they told me that it was a sensor and that i should try a transmission fluid change first. that did not help, i continued driving for another 2 weeks with getting stuck in the middle of the highway several times at very dangerous times (ie. after 2am) with close calls, fortunately nothing happened to me but i would like to see that this does not happen to anyone else. i took the car to lr dealership repair and they told me that i needed a new transmission and transfer box among other things that would bring it to a $11-15k job. i find this ridiculous for such an expensive car that was well taken care of with 65,000 miles. i was out of warranty but a transmission should be the life of a car. please help! i would like to have a recall and/or class action suit to remedy this issue as soon as possible. *tr

Took my 2004 rr to dealer for front differential recall, having no prior issues. left the dealer and within 20 minutes had a failure at highway speeds in miami, in rush hour traffic!! cpu on vehicle said "put vehicle in neutral" which i did and luckily coasted to the side of the freeway stranded. thank goodness i wasn't seriously injured. had it towed to the dealer and same issue within 70 miles of driving, dealer seems to be "dumbfounded" to the symptoms. *tr

Transmission failure in land rover lr3, no customer service and unwillingness to compensate for 18 days of time without the vehicle. *tr

I have a 2004 range rover and my brother has a 2003. i just had my car towed today to land rover to fix a diff problem that obviously most 2002-2005 models have and land rover wants to do nothing about it! mine has 64k on it and my brothers had 58k on it. total bs that it breaks like that so quickly if at all. these are 78k trucks brand new. totally unacceptable! *tr

Vehicle looses all forward drive when drive shaft and differential spines sheer off. this has been reported on the internet by a large population of owners of this vehicle. i was traveling in heavy traffic on i-75 north at the i-75 and i-10 interchange when without any warning the shaft failed leaving me without the abiliy to do anything other than stop. i was nearly hit by a tractor trailor as i was on an up hill grade and was not able to get completely off the express way before the vehicle came to a stop. the vehicle's park selector on the shifter was inoperative and the vehicle could only be held in place using the parking brake. the dealer said this was a common problem and that a retorfit was in the works and would be available within 30 days. the dealer had to install an original part which according to him does not contain the re-engineered fix. this leaves me out $3,000 and with a part i know will fail again in the future without notice.

Front drive shaft fault on range rover 2004 vouge. *tr

I was driving at about 75 miles/hr on the interstate when my car made a loud noise and completely stopped accelerating. i was almost rearended trying to get out of the road. i was told that my by the range rover dealership that my front differential failed. i could have been killed and i was barely able to get of the road. *tr

Front differential failure on highway, barely avoiding sure accident. very lucky that accident did not occur!! *tr

I purchased a new 2004 hse range rover along with a warranty extension for 100,000 miles. during the second year of ownership, the "failed trans. program" warning started to appear, the car would suddenly shift into "limp" mode (2nd gear) with a loud thud. each time i took it to the dealership (3 different dealers) i was told it was just a sensor. nothing to worry about. i have taken it in for repair for this issue more than 8 times, my warranty just expired, and now i am told that i need a new transmission. i am livid. *tr

I have a 2004 range rover that has had the front differential replaced at 50k miles and again at 80k miles and now it has failed again leaving me stranded on the highway. the last time it was "replaced" was only 8 months ago. *tr

Failure of front differential of 2004 range rover. these failures are chronic and due to a design failure, but land rover has done nothing to correct the problem. i've asked my local dealer to replace the front end as an 'extended warranty' but have not heard if they will. if not, its a $5,000 repair item. *tr

I am the owner of a 2005 range rover. i purchased the vehicle used in 2006 with 60,000 mile's on it. in june 2007, the front differential broke while in the middle of two busy intersections. traffic was halted until some men pushed my car to the side of the road. there was no warning leading up to this breakdown. in fact, the car was just at the dealership for the 75,000 mile checkup. not to mention range rover charged me $3,000.00 for this repair.. the most recent front differential breakdown was more serious since it occurred on the expressway in the middle of nowhere. while traveling to birmingham al. from atlanta ga. at a speed of 70 miles per/hr the car made a sudden grinding noise and stop accelerating. once i realized wgat was going on i started getting to the side of the road. it was scary because part of the truck was still in the freeway lane and trucks and cars were avoiding hitting us. my teenage son had to push the car off the freeway. after this being the second time in peril i am now afraid to drive this vehicle that i owe a considerable amount of money on. this last incident occurred on march 07, 2008. the part was still under warranty since it had only been 9 months and less than 8,000 miles since the last front differential was replaced. oh by the way , the car is still at the dealership in birmingham al. they didn't have the parts and the parts haven't arrived yet. i hope something can be done to help me, and others in my position. *tr

The failure which occurred twice was that my front differential and front drive shaft failed (first time 48,000 miles and second 68,000 miles). what was done to correct the failure was apparently all parts were changed. car does not move. old parts are available. dealer wants to charge twice as much as a private mechanic wants to charge. vehicle is not outside the warranty and dealer will not replace parts for free. dealer does not acknowledge high rate of front differential failure. *tr

I was traveling home on i-h201 when there was a loud gear cranking sound and the vehicle could no longer accelerate. the warning came on and said to put the vehicle in neutral. the vehicle rolled to the side of the road and needed the emergency brake to stop because it couldn't shift into park. it was towed in and the dealer said that it was a front differential failure which was common with this year. it's lucky that it happened in the middle of the night when there wasn't any traffic. there weren't any mechanical warnings prior to this incident. *tr

I was traveling in my 2004 range rover with 47k miles on i-h201 in hawaii at 55 mph with cruise control on when the engine suddenly revved up, the warning sign came on and said to put the car in neutral and it stopped accelerating. i put the car in neutral and rolled to the side of the highway. the car could not longer get into gear, made horrible grinding noises, and only could only stop with the emergency brake engaged (putting the car in park did nothing). the car had to be towed into the land rover dealership. they said that the front differential was completely gone and needed to be replaced, along with the drive shaft. this is an incredibly dangerous fault and should be addressed by land rover. *tr

My husband, son 10 yrs old, myself , and two pugs were driving on highway 31 at appx 65 mph when suddenly our car made a loud crack noise and suddenly stopped accelerating telling us to put the car in neutral. we were on our way on vacation appx 90 miles out of town. fortunately the land rover dealer was open at 630 pm and when we described what had happened he knew exactly what the problem was. we had to wait 3 hours on barely what would be considered the shoulder of the road in the snow and wait for someone to tow our car to the nearest land rover dealer. the car has 54,000 miles on it and we paid 63,000 dollars for the vehicle. it was completely incompacitated and left us stranded in a very dangerous place with absoutely no recourse other than towing. thank god we made it safely however this situation could have resulted in a very different outcome. to date my car is still out of service and i a, left without a vehicle. *tr

2004 range rover front differential failure on highway, suddenly lost power could have been very serious in heavy traffic, had toddler and infant in car. *tr

A couple of months ago my vehicle just stopped on bw parkway. i had been hearing a grinding noise but thought it was my tires. i went to my mechanic who told me it was the driving shaft. he replaced a part that cost me $1200 alone. now i am experiencing that same grinding noise especially if i go over 40 miles per hour. i have a feeling that it is the same issue again which is why my frustration has led me into doing some research on possible recalls. it appears that this is a common problem with my vehicle. *tr

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. the dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the suv is worth. and yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). i personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. another poor design flaw issue, and i was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway! *tr

First occurrence - driving in residential neighborhood about 10-15mph. my 2003 rr made a big clunking noise then immediately followed and awful screeching noise. i was unable to drive, truck instantly stopped and screen stated put in neutral. i was stranded on side of road waiting for a tow truck with my 3 children, the youngest was 4 months. second occurrence - less than 1 year later, i was on vacation in cleveland ohio thanksgiving time. driving about 30 mph and the same exact noise happened and instantly the truck stopped, i knew exactly what it was. it was 11:30 pm, i called my insurance company and there were no tow companies open. finally someone came to assist me and pushed my 7000lb truck into an empty lot until the next day. when the help arrived they parked about 3 feet behind my truck, not knowing the truck was not safe in park my truck drifted back and hit his new bmw truck. both times the differential went up i had to pay for it! over $2500 both times not to mention the cost to tow my truck back to md from ohio $1600. i must say that when my truck arrived at the shop all of the mechanics knew about the issue with rr's and their differentials. this is so sad, there is no warning it just happens. i expected so much more from range rover, the name to me means quality but this vehicle has not lived up to its name. not to mention that the company has not acknowledged that this is a common issue with these vehicles and they still will not take ownership of this defect. there are many more stories like this, coincidental as it seems my good friend with a 2004 rr differential went up the same day as mine, luckily she was still covered under warranty. *tr

My car has endless problems in every aspect!! anyone that owns one are having the same issues and nobody can seem to fix it, nor can i get parts to fix it, and the parts you do get to repair the vehicle break faster than the original parts on the car !! my engine has not failed yet but my transmission has and the dealer ship wont fix it and said there is nothing wrong with it !! iv paid more money fixing the car than i have for the car !! i can't go more than 1000 miles before something else breaks !! i have owned the car for about 18 months and its been in the shop for about 12 of those 18 months !! everyone that has one of these landrover freelanders has the same issues and nobody can get parts for this car ! nothing works right and nothing runs like it should and even the mechanics at the dealer ship will take you aside and tell you get rid of it while you still can !!! i cant and neither can allot of others like me because of the money they have put into the car just to keep it on the road !! this car has left me and my 20 month old son stranded in the middle of nowhere on more than three or four or five occasions !! i lost track of how many times !! and when something goes wrong with this car your stuck wherever your at !! its not safe to walk down a freeway with a baby at any time during the day or night and that's exactly what iv had to do on many different occasions !! this is not a safe car by any means ! when my fuel pump went out my car just died at 60 miles an hour on the highway and nearly caused an accident with me and many other cars and i thank the good lord nothing happened when the car died and it felt like someone was slamming on the brakes !! this car is a safety hazard in the worst way !! kids should not be allowed too ride in this car do too the fact they might get hit by a car when it dies and leaves you on the freeway or anywhere else your at !! i ...

I had a 2006 range rover super charge with engine/transmission problem and coolant problems. this problem existed from 5,000 miles all the way to 64,000. i kept complaining and bringing the car back to the first place it broke down which was in georgia. i tried to take the truck to a service place in new jersey but was told i had to bring the car back to the first place where it was so called repaired! which to me was too far! after bringing the car and complaining to land rover corporate no one would help me and the transmission went on the car and the radiator which i was forced to pay for both even though i was still under warranty and the problem was never fixed for the whole time i had the vehicle! this created a hardship for me and it cost me over $15,000 which i paid and when i returned the vehicle i am now being sued for over $12,000 dollars which sounds crazy to me and the service manager who i complained about was later fired for not honoring warranties and being disrespectful! please help me! after researching this site i see that this is a on going problem with range rover! *tr

A stop light was turning "green" so i step on the gas peddle, the vehicle at that time stopped abruptly and was making a grinding noise. when i step on the gas, it doesn't do anything but making a louder grinding sound. at that time, i see an error message that reads "remove gear of neutral". i did not receive any warning message or any funny noise leading to this . this has never happen before. i had my car towed to a independent garage, since the landrover does not take any responsibility or accountability on the false design of this vehicle. i found out later it was an on going issue with the front differential, which the dealership trying to say it was an "wear and tear" issue and they were going to charge me $1,800.00 to fix. i will never purchase anything from landrover or whoever the parent company is. *tr

No warning occurred. my front differential went out on my 2004 range rover. this occurred on a residential street after stopping at a red light and trying to move forward. fortunately i wasn't on a major hwy traveling at high speeds. *tr
