Vehicle drive shaft in 'drive' but it's not engaged when pressing on the gas pedal. vehicle acted like it was in neutral. vehicle was driving in motion, but then would not accelerate.

While driving on the freeway, the transmission dropped out of gear and engine revved past 7k rpm and the car decelerated. "transmission fault" was displayed and service engine light came on. had to coast the car across four busy lanes of traffic with non responsive gas petal to the shoulder. after the car was shut down and restarted, all error/fault massages went away and the car drove fine. this could have resulted in a serious incident.
